“What matters is not wealth, or status, or power, or fame – but rather, how well we have loved, and what small part we have played in bettering the lives of others.”
That’s one criticism I will never understand, that he is “out of touch” and “not empathetic.” Seriously?!?! Because our last President was so amazing in that department and PBO fails to measure up. /sarcasm. More reaching and unnecessary criticism from both sides. Michelle and Barack are two of the warmest individuals in public service.
Ditto! His warmth is one of the reasons that so many were drawn to this mostly unknown man of relative inexperience during the campaign. There was just something about him. I found myself drawn to the TV in the early days of the primary, whenever he was on. If he was not real, those who are looking so hard to find reasons to show us that he is not who we believe him to be, would have found some real evidence by now. He has always been the same; emphathetic, smart, funny, serious and a man who loves people. You will not find him wiping his hands on someone else’s shoulders after shaking hands with people (as Bush did in Haiti).
chipstick who is singing that song i love it.
Hi Tulips, the song is ‘Corner’ by Allie Moss – here’s a video of her singing it:
Amazing how everytime POTUS gives a speech that knocks the socks off the country..(which we know is pretty much EVERY speech) media notice and suddenly he’s become “Presidential”.. or a “leader”… or a “fighter”… or “thats the guy I voted for”… which lasts about 5 minutes in their wee memory banks.
Good Grief MEDIA thou art Fickle. The man never changes, he is rock steady, consistently EMPATHETIC and Gandhi-like in his calm.. a constant in giving respect, and showing humanity for ALL of us. I’m more and more certain that the media just talks.. they never apparently really listen.. or when they bother to listen to something beyond their network’s newest ‘snippet’ used to play ‘gotcha’ – they apparently hear with very jaundiced ears. (that goes for newspaper writers as well). We have got to start holding these folks more accountable for THEIR inconsistency.
again, thank YOU chipsticks for all your wonderful diaries.
Well said, and true.
When I hear all this talk of how *this* speech is the best and the one that *now* makes him the president of “all America”, I’m thinking where the heck have all these people been??!!
This man has been as consistent as humanly possible!!! He ROCKS and *has* from the get go!!!
You are so right. I also find it appalling when people say, well, finally a great speech. Where has Obama been for the last year? Seethe!
I agree.. Everyone who is eloquent in their support, here s b sure to vote, get other to vote in this man we are proud of in 2012.
Beautiful video CS. Thnk u.
Thanks chipsticks for all the priceless photos. Anyone who hasn’t noticed President Obama’s warmth extended to one and all since he came on the scene has not been paying attention. It’s one of those false claims that gets uttered by some envious commenter, and it gets picked up and spread around even though it has absolutely no basis in fact.
That’s exactly what it is. I do believe that most people, might I say white people, and I mean no disrespect, do not see what I, a black woman, can see in this black man. In my community, we are used to seeing, and have an affinity for, a “smooth”, “cool”, brother, to put it simply. I have dated men who have the demeanor of our president. Don’t let the outside fool you. Underneath, there is emotion and sensitivity. This is what white America does not fully appreciate, because they are unaccustomed to a black man so visible in the world. Just thought I’d put my perspective on the matter.
I want you to know , that I, a white woman, do see what you are speaking of.. I have never understood those who say he is aloof and above or speaks down, etc…. but whatever that quality is .. he is a special leader.for this time when some other types of men might not be up to this huge task. You are right, it is unfortunate that much of America is too exposed to the negative events that include black men, and the media never gives enough due to the positives that go on in our communities ..for everyone. Wish that would change along with the hateful rhetoric.
I think they intentionally conflate President Obama the problem solver with President Obama the man. Anyone who fails to recognize the exceptional gifts and abilities of this man, possibly suffers from eye/and or ego deficiencies. It would be such a relief if the information collective would finally put that untrue and tired meme to rest.
I am so proud of the Obama Family I cry as I pray for them daily. I pray that Mother Robinson is realizing that the sacrifices she made over the years to prepare her Daughter Michelle to be the “First Lady of America” was akin to being Mother Mary for generations yet unborn.
May she live a long and happy life — just reaping the fruits of her labor. Who could have known that they were preparing their little girl to deal with the joys, problems, and issues of the free world. She is still sacrificinig her personal life to be the Grand Mother “unforgettable” still laying that foundation for Sadha and Malia to become “normal” young ladies while living in the fishbowl of our Nations’ Capitol.
I am blessed to see the U. S. Capital daily and to live here in this Capitol city — yet I have never witnessed such hatred, disrespect, and meanness toward a President — no matter the circumstances — and I was brought here as a child in 1941 during the next-to-last Administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt (who was not perfect).
Yes, I digress — I love and respect the Obama Family and their devotion to making this a better America for us all — what a challenge — it is my prayer that Congress will get off their highhorses, one by one and realize that together we can restore our Country to its’ rightful position in the World.
Otherwise we become weaker and resume our downward slide to oblivion.

Sorry that I misspelled Sashas’ name — in my haste to complete my comments ; I am in my 75th year and mistakes come easily now. LOL MsYDB
Yvonne what a lovely comment.
I can only cry as I witness the deep goodness of this man. He really does make me want to be better–more loving, more caring, more committed to keeping others. I thought of his mother, Ann Dunham, today who made this world better–way better–by how she raised her son. Blessing be upon her, the President, all their relations, and all ours.
I often think about his mother, and believe it or not, his father. She was the impetus for his caring nature, and he would not be here were it not for Barack Obama Sr., failing though he was. I wish Stanley Ann could be here to see her son, and know that all those 4 a.m. wake-ups paid off handsomely.
The reporters at the press conference with Robert Gibbs after President Obama’s speech need to see your slideshow and video as proof of his great warmth and empathy. I think they need to be called on making these kind of purposefully untrue and negative statements.
The reporters need to make a statement so they are read and their publishers are happy, it is too bad the true art of reporting is lost in so many instances. The PResident has had to fight a very uphill battle in many arenas, PR, being part of a minority race, being a calm and thoughtful person, being younger than many who want the job etc etc.. but he is a great rep for all of us. The US needed him at this time, so lets keep him there.
His empathy, as displayed throughout his entire adult life, is profound and is based in his actions, not merely his eloquent words.
Thank you for your slideshow and I hope it truly goes ‘viral.’
What website is this? I like this. Thanks again BWD, I’ve found another place to love!!!!
The MSM with all their envy and jealousy can go to hell for all I care. All of us that have followed this Prez know who he is as a person.
Chipstick, I could watch this over and over. Tears of joy and a smile. I have always loved the way children and babies react to our lovely President. They seem to feel his steadiness. He apparently has a grace about him that does not frighten them.
I notice that when the Pres. hugs children, he often closes his eyes. I think he is blessing them. Thank you so much for this.
Hi Dorothy, thrilled you like the video – I adore that song and thought it fit perfectly with those gentle images, just so happy you enjoyed it. Thank you for your lovely message, love Chipsticks.
What a great piece! I really love the pictures with the song. They were both very moving. I love his pictures with very little kids; Obama plays with them and you can see the connection they make with him. Everyone reaches out to him as he reaches out to them. Really nice end to a hard week. Thanks.
Nice little blog I just found here. I think I found a new site to visit for my daily Obama goodness.
Nothing to add to all the wonderful comments.
Allow me to say….”Welcome Fred”.
A true Statesman he is. Thank you for the pics and thanks to BWD now I have another quality blog to check periodically.
Chipsticks thanks so much for this. It is so silly for folks to say he was empathetic for the first time. Duh like very week he is empathetic. He also uses language in all his speeches that is productive, considerate, and open minded. I hope someone makes a collection of all his speeches that show language of respect and willingness to cooperate, collaborate, and work with everyone. It would be a very long video
The Center For Building A Culture of Empathy has compiled a just such a collection of excerpts from his speeches. I believe it is still a work in progress. I think I found this on Chipsticks’ blog. Check it out.
I never cease to be amazed by how truly great President Obama is, and by how so many people not only don’t see this greatness, but actually think that he is just average or even a failure.
I’d understand this coming from the ignorant party line Republicans and/or outright racists, but I know many, many pretty well-informed people who just don’t come close to understanding how well this young president is doing, and how remarkable he really is. Even the usually pretty well-informed and aware media types have not caught on yet.
In the end (it’s starting to shift just recently), the large number of those who are yet unconvinced or still skeptical will come around and finally get it. Once the awareness of how smart, wise, hard-working, logical and visionary Obama is begins to gain public acceptance, it will gain momentum, and then, watch out.
The facts are the facts, and just about everything this president has done has worked out remarkably well for the nation.
And the scary thing is, he’s just getting his pace and confidence, and the speech at Tucson was his coming out event for a lot of people who were undecided or
This is what makes me proud that I am an American and that I worked my butt off during the 2008 campaign for President Obama. The highlight of the campaign was at the Pueblo, CO rally when I was able to shake Barrack and Michelle’s hand and look into their eyes, seeing what very special people they are. Thank you President Obama for all you have done for us.
