Irish Times: ….Some observers wondered whether Michelle Obama, who as vice-president of Chicago University Medical Center earned more money than her then senator husband, could adapt to life in the White House. But the president’s aides needn’t have worried about her reputation for frankness. Obama’s first 13 months as first lady have been virtually flawless.
Laura Bush tended to fade into the wallpaper, while Hillary Clinton gave the impression of chafing at the subaltern post of first lady. Obama has embraced the function with a joy and enthusiam not shown by her predecessors.
…When Barack Obama entered politics in 1995, standing for the Illinois state senate, Michelle told him: “I married you because you’re cute and you’re smart. But this is the dumbest thing you could have ever asked me to do.” She nonetheless became his most ardent supporter.
….“That’s the beauty of living above the office: Barack is home every day. The four of us sit down to eat as a family. We haven’t had that kind of normalcy for years. And now I can just pop over to his office, which sometimes I’ll do if I know he’s having a particularly frustrating day.”
At a luncheon for journalists last month, Obama divulged one source of their happiness: “We don’t take ourselves too seriously, and laughter is the best form of unity I think in a marriage.” It’s not unusual to see the first couple kiss or hold hands. While they waited for heads of state and government to arrive at a reception at the G20 Summit in Pittsburgh, the President playfully called called her “Flotus”. They exchanged whispers and flirted like teenagers.
“I’m so proud of him,” Obama told Winfrey. “He has never disappointed me. First and foremost he’s my husband, my friend, and the father of my children.
“That didn’t change with his hand on the Lincoln Bible. But it doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the gravity of what he’s doing. The way I can honour that is by working by his side and adding value to what he’s doing in any way that I can. That’s my part in this. I am supporting the president of the United States.”

This article was so refreshing and well written. You can tell that the Obamas relationship is just about perfect. They complement each other well. The President is a savvy leader, but I gotta say FLOTUS is a wonderful combination of Mom-in-Chief and savvy politician
IMO an excellent summary of the give and take that cements marriage!
“He has never disappointed me. First and foremost he’s my husband, my friend, and the father of my children.
“.. I [..] appreciate the gravity of what he’s doing. … by working by his side and adding value to what he’s doing in any way that I can. That’s my part in this. ….”
In addition to all that the First Couple is accomplishing politically, I feel sure they are making a difference in (young)marriages across the country, and possibly across the world.
I’m just so glad they have each other- they are perfect for one another because they obviously know how to compromise and work together.. the same way they lead our country, they lead their family.. and yep laughter is one of the keys to harmony imo. I’ve loved Michelle from the first time I heard her speak, my first thought: wow she’d be nice to have over for coffee and a chat, down to earth, squared away – my kind of female friend. She deserves total respect from all of America.. when she’s disrespected- when they go after her, its the most furious I’ve gotten over the bigotry thats been directed at our President and First Lady- she should always be protected by us, imo.
I think they are equals in every respect…and why they make it look easy. I both admire and commend them, because it always takes effort, and am just a wee bit envious. Love them both, they are formidable as individuals and a phenomenal force as a couple. Live long and strong Obama’s, the World both loves and needs you.
Supporting the president of the United States. What a novel and patriotic idea. N/t
I soo love, admire and respect Flotus deeply.
Damn Michelle, if you were gravy, I’d sop you up with a biscuit. Nom nom nom. I always tell people that Barack Obama interested me, but I fell for Michelle.
That was a very good article; especially when they touch on her strength and sensuality when she bares her arms and legs (as in shorts, and sleeveless sheaths).
Thanks so much for what you do here, Chipsticks.
lol+:
oops that’s wrong
“Laura Bush tended to fade into the wallpaper, while Hillary Clinton gave the impression of chafing at the subaltern post of first lady. Obama has embraced the function with a joy and enthusiam not shown by her predecessors.”
This is why she’s so effective. We needed her as much as we needed her husband. Fantastic combo!
I agree with the prez, thank god she’s never decided to run for any of the offices that he’s campaigned for. That would seriously be a tough sell. Love them both so much, wouldn’t, couldn’t decide.
;+
She is one of the most graceful First Ladies(besides Jackie Kennedy) in my lifetime. I have loved others for many reasons, but First Lady Michelle brings something that is so special to the Whitehouse. Thank you, our Lovely First Lady, Michelle Robinson Obama!!!!
