“blessed by God and beautiful by nature” can be said of both the people of Brazil and the Obamas…

One of the most beautiful headlines I’ve ever seen. Viva Brasila.

Hey, did you guys notice the ‘Historic Visit’ headline in the upper right corner of the paper? Yep, THE MAN is making his mark on history in many ways, large and small! “Go ‘Bama! Show them how it’s done right.”

Soo true, beautiful words from our most beloved orator, PBO. Those words refer to you too Mr. President.

My rough attempt at translation: Rio conquered the heart of the American president, Barack Obama. Citing the music of Jorge Ben Jor, in the Municipal Theater Palace, he praised Brazil and President Dilma Rousseff for their struggle for democracy. “The people should know that the future has arrived. The future is here, now,” he [said]. At night, he was at Christ the Redeemer [statue] with his family.

Thank you! I’ve been having a good dose of what it feels like to hear someone speaking and you haven’t a clue what they’re saying, by watching the videos that were posted here in portuguese. Seeing them was good, but being normally nosey I ached to know exactly what was being said. Lucky you, Monala.

On another site, someone criticized Obama for going to Brazil, calling it a terrible country with horrible poverty. I responded by noting that what Brazil was, the U.S. is becoming. Brazil was once an awful country in terms of poverty and crime, despite its beauty, culture and natural resources, because it had no social safety net and the rich hoarded all the wealth for themselves. And that is exactly where we are headed, if the rightwingers get their way.

But Brazil has really changed in the last decade or so, in no small part because of the reforms instituted by the previous leftist President Lula. Their economy is growing by leaps and bounds, and their middle class is increasing. Obama is right–Brazil *is* the future.

Here’s an article about Brazil’s current president Rousseff that really demonstrates the changes in Brazil:

May it be repeated, “blessed by God and beautiful by nature.” Can it be more beautifully stated? I’ve been blubbering all weekend people, I might as well continue through the week!

My husband’s oldest sister was in the Peace Corps in Brazil (Salvador, Bahia) during the early 60′s and has returned often over the years. She can attest to the huge changes that have happened there.

@Monala – You are spot on.
