Thank you so much. I was hoping for a running thread for today’s events as I’m at work and won’t have much access to video or other live reporting. I will be refreshing this page like crazy.

This is what matters: our President meeting with the families and those who want to move forward with resolve and healing doing so.

The talking heads don’t matter. The petulant bratty rethuglicans don’t matter. They never matter, but they especially don’t matter TODAY.

May today be a day of healing and reflection.

    Viva Obama.

I am so proud of Our President and I send all my best wishes and prayers to New York with him. New York was always the place that I worked and loved. I lived in Maryland and made that trip every monday and back on friday. I stayed at the hotel at the world trade center and to this day I hate that total destruction of a beautiful corner of NYC.

I think he’s looking forward to meeting the families and fire fighters, too. I heard one of the family members saying that the President is human, too, and he needs to look the families in the eyes and have them say “thank you”, so he can know it was the right thing to do. That was a really nice statement. The family member also said that the President has a very hard job, and that what he did with OBL was gutsy and took a lot of courage.

I love that the President is meeting privately with the families of the victims of 9/11. This is not about him. He wants to listen more than speak, I imagine, and a private affair is the only way to do that.

I am always pleased to know that the President is in my beloved city. I went to my first OFA training meeting last night. I am fired up!

This President is wise, compassionate, and strong. I deeply love this man. For all his detractors and (unbelievably) undecideds, this man is profoundly loved by many people in this country and all over the world, and we are vindicated again and again.

God protect our President as he meets with the families of the victims of 9/11. Protect our city, our mayor and all those ensuring the safety of our city every single day. And God bless all those whose hearts have yet to heal even in the wake of OBL’s demise. Thank you, God, for our loving leader and wise protector. We are grateful. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Please make sure to see a video of the firefighters comments. They appreciated PBO’s visit saying the White House picked their location to show his respects (here’s an article that might explain the symbolic significance). PBO quickly broke the ice, Mayor Giuliani’s presence helped. Afterward, PBO took off his jacket and ate eggplant parmesan.

The firefighters also said, several times, how much they appreciate the military.

This came across my twitter stream: @Mark Knoller:
At Pres Obama’s request, a 14year old girl, Payton Hall, was invited to the ceremony. She wrote him about the loss of her dad on 9/11.

    • 61 northanger
      May 5, 2011 at 2:16 pm

From the pool report on the wreath-laying ceremony (which also has some more great photos):

One of the youngest in attendance was 14-year-old Payton Hall. As is his habit, Obama read some of the letter sent to the president on Monday, including one from Hall. Payton lost her father, Glen James Wall, in the World Trade Center attack and wrote about how she has handled the loss. So Obama asked that she be invited to the ceremony. When White House staff called Payton’s mother, she had no idea that Payton had written the president. Payton, her mother, her sister and her friend (who also lost her father on 9/11) all were in attendance.

      • May 5, 2011 at 2:45 pm

Hi Northanger, I just found a caption that included the woman’s name – she’s Diane Wall:

“….New Jersey mother and 9/11 widow from Rumson, Diane Wall, along with her two young daughters Payton and Avery, waited and watched….Obama walked over to the Rumson mother and her daughters, embracing one of the young girls fully, and seconds later hugging and kissing the mother on the cheek … Diane Wall’s late husband, Glen, had perished on 9/11 while working high in the World Trade Center, at Cantor Fitzgerald. They also stood with one other teenage girl who was said to also have lost her father on 9/11.”

btw, Emily at Angry Black Lady strongly recommends a book by Anatol Lieven called “Pakistan: A Hard Country”.

If you’re pressed for time — or if foreign relations isn’t enough your bag that you want to commit to 480 pages — you would be very well served by reading just the book’s 38-page introduction, where Lieven carefully lays out the parameters of his subject and the outlines of his conclusions — but if you do have the time, I highly recommend diving i
      – – –
Lieven grapples successfully with a truly gobsmacking amount of information, transforming it into a lucid — and not incidentally, fascinating — whole, parsing the social and cultural tapestry woven from Islam, kinship ties, the military, and global expectations and pressures (indeed, a sort of patchwork tapestry, as each small section of the tapestry is overlaid with, and butts up against, unexpected intricacies), pointing to issues that few on this side of the ocean appear to have even begun to consider (such as population growth and the climate: “In the long run,” Lieven writes, “the greatest threat to Pakistan’s existence is not insurgency but ecological change”).

On the tour bus the day before, the driver mentioned that many people hope the Trump tower will be the last one he does, and a woman next to me said that it just figures that Trump would take the best view in Chicago. This is interesting. PPP poll about how many people believe PBO was born in America since he released his long-form birth certificate. A nugget:

“The biggest change came among Republicans, as 14% now say Obama was born outside America, down 17 points from last April when 31% of GOPers said the same thing.”

The ones who watch FOX News and nothing else? And their Trump couldn’t provide any reports from his “investigators” in Hawaii, so I guess they grudgingly accepted the truth.

Please let it be untrue that he had a gun –

Witnesses say man may have pulled gun as Obama motorcade passed near Ground Zero

Authorities apprehended a man who witnesses say may have pulled a gun out of a backpack as President Barack Obama’s motorcade passed today in New York.

The man, who wore a blue hat, had dark curly hair and appeared to be in his 20s, was wearing a backpack. New York Police Department officers and Secret Service agents shouted, “Get down, get down,” and tackled the man at the corner of Church and Vessey Streets in lower Manhattan.

Obama had just left the World Trade Center site and his motorcade was turning from Vessey Street to Church Street when the incident occurred in front of the Church Street Station Post Office.

The man was taken into the post office as dozens of officers from various organizations arrived to assist.

Two photographers, from the New York Daily News and the Associated Press, snapped photos of the man as he was taken down. They went into the post office with police to show them the photos.

What a dignified and beautiful ceremony and set of meetings. My heart goes out to NYC, those who have fought in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and our President.

    oh my gosh…super scary.

It has worried me today thinking of PBO in NYC with so many people and buildings. I’ve been wondering how the secret service can screen everyone/everywhere in an outdoor city event.

I prayed last night knowing he would be in NYC with all those people and huge buildings. Everyone isn’t a fan of his and there are some nasty, filthy, ignorant people in this world. I am so glad that SS could obtain and arrest this man. Why would anyone want to wish death upon anyone? Especially MY PRESIDENT?? Something is mentally wrong in his mind or he needs JESUS. Probably BOTH. I’m so glad Mr. President is safe. God was truly watching over him. His is work is not done.

Isn’t the Beast something? The last time the Prez was in London for G20, it couldn’t park on a street by St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Sq. as they were scared it would go thru into the Crypt below – it’s that heavy!

The poster of the fallen firemen in the picture above has the Chaplain of the Fire Department at the top as if in clouds. He was the first recorded fatality. His name was Father Mychal F. Judge OFM. I remember them carrying him out. It devastated the fire fighters and it was the beginning of the end for so many. Remember the Frenchman who just happened to be at that Fire Station when the call came in of the 1st airplane. He road along with them and was inside with the chief and his camera scanned over to Fr. Mychal and he was pacing in the lobby praying and within a few seconds he was dead.

IF you saw that video you could hear the large thuds as people hit the pavement after jumping out the windows. The chief was startled and said “What’s that?” and then he look out the window and recognized what wss happening and calmly said “I think we need to go another way to see if we can get up there. All the time this was being recorded. I’ll never forget that.

I know those first responders were so happy to see our President and the young letter writer with her mom and friend. The young boy on the other side is looking down poor little guy. It was such a moving experience to see all these pictures Chips. Thank you. You are our first responder with all the pictures.

I just watched the fire fighter interview. Near the end that reporter asking questions was real scum as he tried to get the Chief to say something bad about Bush. But the Fire Chief is smart and would not let himself be pulled into a blame game. Good job on him.
