Thank you Dorothy ;-)
Love this. . . will make it viral!
Not much of a Bill Maher fan, but I gotta admit I kinda liked that bit ;-)
“…Barack Obama is one efficient steely nerved multitasking black ninja gangsta president… ”
We knew Pres Obama is all that and a bag of chips before he started his Presidency.
Bill Maher needs to catch up
The best line ever! :)
Chipstick and family. I was just talking to my son in New York and that woman at the World Trade Center with the three girls is one of his best friends.
I guess I did not understand that the girl in black is the one who wrote Obama a letter after he was elected and explained to him that she and her family were victims of 911. I guess the white house had to call the mother numerous times, because she has not been to the site since her husband died on the 25th floor of the South Building, but she finally agreed.
This is the great part. She is apparently a moderate conservative, but after being hugged by Obama and speaking with him, she told my daughter in law that she would be voting for Obama in 2112.!!!!!!! She said he was so warm and at ease. She is now smitten. She said his smile just melted her heart. Yahooooooo.!
Great report Dorothy! Thanks. That’s our POTUS, he gets them…one…smile…at…a…time.
‘he gets them…one…smile…at…a…time’
As my old man liked to say ‘Ain’t that the truth!’
Hi Dorothy, nice report. Just one thing. . . we would ALL like him to be here until 2112 and even vote for him then, but I think you mean 2012! :)
Big laugh. I was so revved I was not thinking straight.
Pres Obama would have to go in a time machine in the future. lol
Thanks for sharing that inside scoop – we welcome her into the light. She was working those black stilettos and I did notice she was also hugging a little long… First time loitering hug is free next time she must deal with Michelle( and some others who are protective as well as jealous.) LOL
LOL! Now my daughter-in-law is trying to figure out a way to get him back to NYC so that she can meet with him. She has all kinds of plots in mind.
He will be back in NYC on September 11, 2011 for the 10th anniversary.
We welcome the vote of anyone. The hug was alittle long, but Michelle knows who Barack comes home to each night. And one thing about this President, we know he is a good President, but the love of his family touched our heart also. To see him with his girls, Malia and Sasha, or see loving look that he gives to Michelle, or the gentle touch,or hear him talk of his love for her, these things are part of what makes us love and support this President so much, the love of his family. Now as for Maher, he was funny. Sometimes I can’t stand him, then there are times when he tells the truth and he is so funny.
I think the length of the hug was in direct proportion to his considerable compassion. Knowing the depth of her loss to both her and her 2 daughters, I think he identified with having 2 daughters and calling them at the last minute to say how much he loved them and would watch over them. It’s a very tragic story, really. And I believe that POTUS felt the depth of their sorrow.
I bet that they get to meet their idol …. per the presidents arrangements.
I cannot recall the teen stars name that they like but I read they told the president… I am almost certain something in the background is in motion for a surprise for the girls….
I would bet my life and fortune on it.
That is just the classy type guy that he is.
It was Justin Bieber. He told her he knows Justin Bieber and maybe he could arrange for them to meet, or something to that effect.
That’s the loveliest story Dorothy, what a small world it is!
It is isn’t it.
Dorothy – what a cool update! How awesome is that!!
I keep thinking if only people would open their minds and hearts to him for just 1 minutes, they would see what we see. ** Sigh **
OMG, Dorothy. Thanks so much for sharing that story. It really warms my heart. Honestly, unless you have a heart of stone and haven’t been paying attention to ANYTHING for the last 2 1/2 years, you absolutely cannot meet this man and not truly feel a great depth of sincerity and compassion and generosity of spirit. He is the very real deal and is so incredibly magnetic as a result. BRAVO, Mr. President! We are so, so, so very blessed.
Now that Bill Maher is totally on the bandwagon, he’s on FIRE! I hadn’t heard the first part of that segment, I just saw the second half of the video at BWD’s site. This longer version is toooo funny!
We need to be sure that particularly Maher video is seen by 10s of millions of Americans over the coming months. I’m not a fan of Mr Maher, but he did something worthy of a Pulitzer prize with that piece of FACTUAL commentary on Bush and the Republican Party.
Oh I agree Bobfr, I just emailed it to about 10 family and friends all over the United States!
fraking B.R.I.L.L.I.A.N.T :D
he had me  from start to finish
This is great and very funny – but don’t get too complacent folks – Maher’s not back on the bandwagon. Trust me, next week, he’ll find something else to bitch at Obama about. So don’t get too excited.
I’ve spent the last several hours reflecting on two topics that at first may not seem related:
Topic 1. For those of you who spend time on AlJazeera English then you are likely aware of the ‘live blogs.’ Those ‘live blogs’ apart from the typical annoying troll are a trove of information – real time and, over the months I’ve been tracking them, remarkably accurate. You simply will never read or hear in corporate American press any of the flow of information that you find there. So, yesterday, while scanning the Libya live blog folk were recounting the increasing resistance even within Tripoli including a rather amusing stunt. People are painting balloons and chickens with the Libyan Freedom Fighters colors and icon and releasing the balloons randomly around Tripoli and the chickens in various parts of the city – driving the remaining Daffi soldiers/mercs nuts.
Topic 2. As you have noted, tomorrow’s Sunday am corporate media blabber sessions [stopped watching MTP in the mid-70’s and never watched any of the others] the bulk of the guests are a pack of Bush’s fellow war criminals – Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Yoo, etc.
Why would I link these two topics?
Well, for starters ‘progressive media,’ at least in this Nation, is an oxymoron. We don’t have a progressive media. We don’t have a liberal media. We don’t have anything that comes close to qualifying for the critical role the 4th Estate plays in a vibrant democracy.
Sure we have a few exceptions – comedians whom on occasion actually deliver facts and robust analysis ON CABLE; a handful of professional journalists who on occasion actually deliver facts and robust analysis ON CABLE; a few newspapers that manage to provide facts and analytical insights; some highly credible blogs.
But, mainstream, broadcast TV/radio, cable, print – forget about it.
So, you’re asking – ‘Bob, what does that have to do with chickens and balloons and folk who should be dressed in orange appearing on corporate broadcast TV tomorrow morning?’
All week we’ve had an incessant stream of bullshit – TV/Cable/Radio/Print – about Bush and his gang not getting enough credit for killing OBL when the truth of the story is that that Bush and his gang didn’t pay attention when they were told OBL was going to attack within the USA, quickly forgot about OBL a few months after he did, started an illegal and immoral war and continue to lie about it unto this very minute (and will continue lying about it), didn’t pay for that immoral and illegal war and did more damage to the economy of this country in the process than OBL could have ever accomplished had an adult like President Obama (or Gore) been in the WH during the summer of 2001.
So, I’m pondering all of that and I’m thinking about those chickens and balloons and I’m wondering, is it about time for us to paint a bunch of balloons and chickens with the Stars and Stripes and turn them loose in every TV/Cable/Radio studio in the Nation.
Of course I mean that figuratively (and I wouldn’t want to abuse chickens, for sure).
But, what I’m conveying is that I feel that we have to become much braver, much bolder, much better organized about revolutionizing the 4th Estate in the USA. I assure you those folk in Tripoli pulling those stunts know they are risking their lives because Daffi’s soldiers would shoot them before they shot the chickens and balloons (which they’ve been doing).
We need to convince people with major wealth – the kind of folk who love and support our President and whom have plenty of $$$$ – that we must create a well funded, exceptional quality, broadcast TV/Radio/Cable+INTERNET news and analysis enterprise – a truly democratic (not party, but intent) 4th Estate. That 4th Estate ‘channel’ must necessarily be free of any form of government subsidy or dependency. It must be a viable business because that is the only way to ensure it’s independence. And, BTW, the key to the sustainable economics of such an enterprise would be to encourage all those viewing and interacting to inform vendors and advertisers that if they don’t support it their products and services will be boycotted – market pressure, persistently applied.
Just some thoughts. Hope you find them of interest. I was watching the Maher clip earlier today as I was finishing these comments so it seemed fitting that I post them here :)
I’m now pondering what the icon of our 4th Estate channel should be :)
Bob, you are always so contemplative and you have such great ideas. It seems that it is hard to get all of our pragmati sites to work together toward our common good and that of our president. I loved your idea of trying to create a format in which we could signal each other and create a talking point that we can send to the media when someone in the media is either misinforming or is directly lying about the president or an issue.
If someone is being untruthful or sarcastic, if we had 100s or 500, 1,000 emails or calls going out, they would have to start paying attention to us. The thing that really annoys me is that even msnbc is just as hard on the president as the right leaning sites. I do hope that as we get closer to the election they will start spending their time attacking the republiscum. It has been a good week with msnbc, but like Bill Maher, I know it will not last.
Does anyone have Soro’s phone number? Joke, but not.
1st Level) we start by calling by phone in massive numbers to complain to the MSM about their lack of reporting facts
2nd Level) Boycott their sponsors
3rd Level) At site protest for those who are near the major news center, for those who are far away contact the shareholders and the owners of the media
4th Level) contact government to pass legislation for fair media and ask other people of other nations who you know to call and put pressure on the media and also ask them to boycott our media sponsors.
How is that sound to you?
Agree one hundred percent!
Good ideas professorx. I do wish we could create a system that create a pretty massive response to untrue or misstated information. That way if they are inundated they will pay attention.
Dorothy and others
How many people do you know on twitter and will they respond to you?
professorx, I am embarrassed to say that I do not twitter. I put things on Facebook.
Is there a place where we could get a list of the sponsors and their products to boycott? I can easily do that, as well as email, and I’d love to push to get the fairness doctrine voted back in. Sign me up.
I’ll be a foot soldier in this effort.
Great query, Betsy. Fantastic response, Sue!!!! You bring us the data and I can assure you I will act on it!!!
Yes.We.Can. … DO.More.Together!
Hi Bobfr. . . hopefully Current TV will be the avenue where all this can take place. This is the channel that is owed by Al Gore and where Keith Olberman will be.
Let’s hope that they will fulfill our needs in ensuring that the truth is out there to combat all the lies by the republican and teapartiers!
here are the media contact numbers
Bob, when Oprah announced her plan for “Own” I was convinced that she with her wealth would surely provide a template for this so desperately needed democratic 4th Estate. Am I dreaming to think that she will indeed wade in when the climate is ripe for success?
Oprah. What a great idea.
To Gloria Powell, Dorothy, Marlz, professor – I’m going to summarize my responses to all of you in just one post as, hopefully, to be as coherent as possible.
Prof – all of those steps are necessary, but I’m going to suggest that we need to be much more direct in advocating the acquisition of not merely cable/satellite distribution but licensed spectrum distribution, i.e., we need to advocate for acquisition of one of the three major broadcast systems and integrated it with TCP/IP and social media as to enable highly interactive, participatory fact finding, analysis and education. More in a moment on that.
Gloria – Oprah is just the type of person I’m referring to – below. And, yes she would be an outstanding person to both invest and lead an effort to create a sustainable 4th Estate channel because she’s got the business skills required.
Marlz – Current TV is a good start – more comments on how to leverage, below.
Dorothy – thank you and I was thinking of your comment as I was composing my responses to folk at OFA, including the wonderful WIW.
When one converses with enlightened ‘C level’ folk in this Nation (which I do), you find that many of them are quite aware of the damage our failed education system and our failed news media (4th Estate) is doing to our Nation.
A person at OFA responded to my thoughts with “Current TV” to which I noted that if the backers of Current TV were to acquire broadcast TV/Radio spectrum the ‘channel’ would then exist. The key would be for them to convince billionaire supporters of President Obama [Like Oprah, Gloria] to make the acquisition of whichever of the three major networks has the lowest market cap, and then leverage what Current TV has initiated as well as integrate social media technology to enable highly interactive fact gathering, analysis and education.
We’re not talking idealism or perfection here, but when 30 or more percent of poll after poll reveals that conspiracy theories are more likely to be believed than blatantly obvious facts, the correlation between failed education and failed journalism is no surprise.
When we see those most eager to destroy our public education system be those most willing to promote or enable conspiracies about a President’s citizenship (and countless other conspiracies), we know exactly who must be held responsible.
They will continue to be successful as long as the bulk of what people see and hear, 24/7, are willful exclusion of actual events (like practically no reporting of the carnage to American soldiers and Iraqi citizens during the 8 years we have been occupying the sovereign Nation of Iraq), deliberate distortion of facts and out-right lies.
Current TV has not, yet, come anywhere close to being the counterbalance to that 24/7 corporate media menace to our Republic.
The sad irony is that the wealthiest Americans are actually the most fragile, the most brittle because they have the most to lose.
We just need to get enough of those super-wealthy folk to realize that millions of minimally educated, conspiracy theory motivated, easily riled, exceedingly well armed, economically depressed people are not in their best interest. They need to stop funding ‘Tea Parties’ and start funding enlightened participatory democracy – they’ll keep their wealth, be way less paranoid, and actually advance the American promise for future generations.
So, letters/petitions to Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, etc., might be worth the effort.
They could also turn the ‘Citizens United’ decision into something those voting in favor on the Supreme Court and their unenlightened wealthy friends never anticipated – create a PAC so exceedingly well funded that it could buy massive amounts of ad time on all three major networks and use that ad time to explain to the American people what it would be like to have network journalism be at least as factual, analytic and non-paranoid as the ads and as President Obama has been and will continue being upon his re-election – promote the President’s re-election by educating the public, not scaring and lying to them. The contrast would be stunning. Call it the CalmCoolTruth PAC :)
This is so in line with what I’ve been wishing for for months now, but haven’t been able to conceptualize as clearly. It would be so timely to get something like this off the ground for 2012. Does anyone with HUGE resources visit this site? Please, oh please check this out. The thought of using the Citizens United ruling contrary to its intended purpose would be poetic irony, IMO. I don’t doubt that Omabots the world over would enjoy donating to the CCT PAC, somewhat in the manner of foreign companies donating to the Chamber of C. If only …..
Thank you. It will only be because of us that the change this Republic so desperately needs happens – as President Obama has told us ever since that cold day in Springfield in 2007.
The ideas above do not belong to me – they belong to America. Spread them to whomever you can. No need for attribution by me – just spread them.
I posted these ideas at OFA. That’s a place that perhaps will mean that Jim Messina and others on the President’s team will see them. Here’s the link; feel free to let them know your thoughts, as well:
I sure hope someone will give your suggestions more than a first look. I wonder how open they’ll be to ‘foreigners’? I’ll try tomorrow, as my eyes are closing on me.
Thank YOU! And, please give it your best effort, VCprezOfan! I assure you, in this global endeavor to advance the inalienable rights of every person, none of us are ‘foreigners’ we are ALL brothers and sisters and we will prevail.
What a great post Bob. It’s funny, I had just read this at Politicususa.com:
Conservative Media Bias: Bush Officials Outnumber Obama 6 to 1 On Sunday Shows
The Sunday morning talk shows are fully embracing their conservative media bias by celebrating the one week anniversary of the death of Bin Laden with shows chocked full of Republican guests.
Here is this week’s Sunday talk show guest line up by program:
Meet the Press (NBC): Tom Donilon, Michael Chertoff, Rudy Giuliani, Michael Hayden
Fox News Sunday (Fox): Tom Donilon, Dick Cheney
This Week (ABC): Tom Donilon, Condoleeza Rice, Husain Haqqani. Panel: Liz Cheney, Tom Ricks, Lawrence Wright
Face the Nation (CBS): Sen. Kerry, Donald Rumsfeld
State of the Union (CNN): Tom Donilon, Sen. Lugar, Anita Dunn, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Tom Davis
Do you notice anything odd about that guest list? The Sunday morning talk shows are going to feature, Bush’s former, Sec. of Homeland Security (Chertoff), Bush’s former CIA director (Hayden), Bush’s former vice president (Cheney), Sec. of Defense (Rumsfeld), Bush’s former Sec of State (Rice), and former Deputy Asst. Sec of State (Liz Cheney). Other Republicans on the shows will be Tom Davis, Rudy Giuliani, and Dick Luger.
I know, I shouldn’t be surprised, but SIX Bush officials on the Sunday shows, to one Pres Obama official??? It’s beyond a joke.
So many individuals are making great efforts to fight back – on Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc – but you’re absolutely right, there is a desperate need for a more united and organized effort. My worry is always that the people with $$$$$ are more naturally drawn to the right, and are usually the ones funding the lies, but oh boy, what you’re suggesting was never needed more than it is now.
Thank you Chipsticks!
When I heard, yesterday, from a colleague what the lineup was – just as noted above in your post – it really set my neurons on fire.
Am going to do some prodding where I can. I hope everyone does, as well. We need a 4th Estate channel – SOON!
Yes.We.Can. … DO.More.Together!!
Hi Bob. . . I also noticed but did not realize it was six to one! President Obama has over twenty million on Facebook (although many are not of his party) but this s a great way of letting everyone know the imbalance in the Media! What can Cheney and the others tell me. They were not involved in this recent take down. I guess its the beach for me tomorrow!
I have to say, this is beyond disgusting. The Cheneys??? Seriously? Do they think we’re stupid? Rumsfeld? UGH. BOYCOTT that hot mess. Don’t watch that BS. It’s beyond disgusting. I really can’t believe how desperate the Bush idiots are to try and push their baloney. DONE.
That information about tomorrow’s guests is pretty depressing. I wonder if say Nancy Pelosi was even invited? Where is Donna Brazile? As for reaching out to people with $$$$$ like Oprah, how ’bout owner/publisher of Ebony, the influential people they list in their magazines, the 100 Black Men Association, Bill Cosby, etc? Bob, Chipsticks is there anyway you guys could facilitate something that we could sign-off on?
GGail, excellent suggestions. I do not have a blog, but Chipsticks has a great one and perhaps she can instigate folk here and all those she knows to take the kind of actions you suggest.
Yes. We. Can. And thank you for that thought provoking thread Bobfr.
The only way you are going to get the media back to doing what they are suppose to be doing is to take away their money.
Make a note of this thread and call you cable co, direct tv or whatever we now pay to watch lies and garbage. Terminate your service. Send a check to PBS station in your area just one check that you have been shelling out to cable. Tell them why you are sending them that check. It is to support the news that reports the TRUTH. Stop feeding these people who are legally corporations, just take away their money.
Sonjia, what you recommend is, of course, something we all should do, if we haven’t already. Several years ago we canceled cable; we do not watch broadcast TV; we support PBS and others.
But now we need to convince folk with all the necessary resources to step forward and establish an effective 4th Estate ‘channel’ – broadcast/internet fully integrated source of 24/7 facts, analysis, and robust dialectic, i.e., it’s not about one opinion or another being ‘wrong’ it’s about opinions, informed by facts, being diverse but also a recognition that the diversity is a function of one’s philosophical perspective, not one’s willful distortion of the actual facts.
Dialectic is a critical ingredient of democracy and our Founder’s knew that; that is why we have the 1st Amendment. But, our Founder’s also recognized that you have an inalienable right to your opinion, but the facts remain what they are and demagoguery is a debasement of democracy and everyone’s inalienable rights.
SURE…PARANOIA, GREED & RACISM ARE FUN, BUT…………(2 MUCH!!)
