President Barack Obama shakes hands with John Bryson, his nominee to be Commerce Secretary, May 31
Steve Benen: ….Up until a few hours ago, I’d never heard of Bryson, so I can’t speak with any confidence to the quality of the nomination. That said, the Center for American Progress seems pleased, as do a variety of folks I’ve talked to this morning involved with climate activism, who consider Bryson one of the good guys.
What I found most interesting, though, wasn’t the White House’s announcement, but rather, the reaction from the Senate Republican leader.
“Shortly before Obama announced Bryson’s nomination, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s office reiterated Republicans’ threat to block all administration nominations until the president acts on pending trade deals with Panama, Colombia and South Korea.”
Our entire political process has been reduced to a series of hostage stand-offs. McConnell …. wanted to remind everyone that unless the GOP gets what it wants on some trade measures, Republicans won’t allow a vote on Bryson’s nomination anyway. It doesn’t matter if he’s qualified or not. American governance has never worked this way; it wasn’t designed to work this way; and it can’t work this way.

Thanks so much for all the contact info. I zipped a cranky email off to the Today Show this a.m. for letting Romney have 15 minutes of free air time to campaign and tell the most dastardly lies about President Obama with no resistance from the “interviewer”, no attempt to set the record straight. And every day they feature some Republican, no Democrats in sight unless it’s someone they believe to be controversial and will stir up resentments. I believe in letting them know we notice their dirty deeds, but to be effective we need all to agree to fire back. We need big numbers in order to have a chance at the scheduling producers caring. A chance.

Isn’t part of the job of the Commerce Secretary to help with trade negotiations? I might be off, but I seem to recall Gary Locke sitting in on several of these discussions around trade and international treaties.

I think the time is coming for all democrats, even President Obama, to do something about the republican blackmail. This constant obstructionism has to come to the forefront of the national discourse. Democrat activists have to force the media to talk about it. Sue I sympathize with you as well. I have a brother who has been unemployed since October 2010. I know the look of desperation and it eats on a man when he can’t pay his way. We have to fo do what we can to help them. And it makes no sense when the ilks like McConnell tries to hold this country hostage with their ultimatums. Weapons form but they won’t prosper. You’d think their hearts would be soften with all the devastation our country is facing. The storms have destroyed lives property businesses etc. And they playing fake games.

Good choice. While the Republicans in Congress do nothing but block progress our president keeps on working for the greater good.
It’s the Administrations own fault for letting the GOP get away with it for the last two and a half years. I mean why would the GOP stop when they’re getting what they want? And the worst part is that you know the GOP will change the Senate rules once they have the Senate and White House only to need 50+1 OR will cry bloody murder and have Fox Propaganda and then soon after the rest of the MSM screaming along with them about the dastardly obstructionist Democrats.
Everything is a hostage situation. Anything the Dems or Obama Administration wants in order for the Government to even function properly needs to be horse-traded. It’s also on gutless worm Harry Reid for agreeing not to change Senate rules so the GOP can keep getting away with this nonsense time and time again.
I don’t agree with you blaming the Administration, StR. I think that you’ll find that the Administration has used every form of communication tool to try and get the message out using media that people actually broadly use. The problem is that the loudest voices are those owned by right wing media machines or angry, idealist left voices or those trying to make money. And there’s no shortage of Democrats willing to present themselves to be used as tools by the right wing machinery.
The other problems are the level of apathy in this country, the distrust of government, the obsession with reality and immediate gratification, willfull ignorance and racism.
Just look at who is on the Sunday shows. Look at what gets covered on national news. Look at the rise of palin and Bachmann. Look at the right wing vile public statements that are never challenged by the media, but the few times that the Administration publicly pushes back in the national media, the heavens open up and public outrage pours out as though they have proposed some evil plot to “kill grandma”. Explain why other countries greeted the President the way they did last week.
I believe the President has been consistently trying to raise the level of discource and get people to act like responsible adults. How can you explain that over 40% of the population is planning to vote for Republicans even after seeing what they are doing to 9/11 responders, military personnel, the country’s credit worthiness, the economy, minorities, education? The Administration doesn’t need to speak to those issues – we can all see them with our own eyes. And yet, there are still those who would vote for Republicans and hand their future to them. We’ve seen what they said about the auto industry, and what they’re saying now. We don’t need the Administration to spell out that hypocrisy.
It’s not the Administration. It’s us.
