betting against america….

Think Progress: House Minority Whip Eric Cantor has often expressed concern for how Obama administration policies are supposedly a “grave danger to America’s prosperity.” Now, the Wall Street Journal finds that Cantor actually invests in an exchange-traded fund that “takes a short position in long-dated government bonds” – effectively betting against the U.S. Treasury bonds that the government uses to fund its operations:

[Cantor] bought up to $15,000 in shares of ProShares Trust Ultrashort 20+ Year Treasury ETF last December, according to his 2009 financial disclosure statement. The exchange-traded fund takes a short position in long-dated government bonds. In effect, it is a bet against U.S. government bonds – and perhaps on inflation in the future.

If Cantor truly cares about “America’s prosperity,” one would have to wonder why he is literally betting against its financial future. The Washington Independent’s Annie Lowrey adds that “Cantor is not a very canny investor. The fund is down 31 percent this year.”

Thank you bjw2

Not only is this a conflict of interest where is JOB is concerned, but the bigger question is, HOW IS THIS NOT TREASON???

I was going to suggest the same thing—“some dare call it treason”. With all these Repubs doing everything they can to destroy the economy so they can destroy Obama and then this disturbing news about one of the Repub House leaders….who has influence on policy investing in funds which bets against U.S. treasury bonds and our financial future, shouldn’t there be consequences?

For the WSJ to report this, they must be really pissed off. Eric Cantor has shares in a company that is betting against the US Treasury Bonds. If this isn’t treason, then this is definitely insider trading. This definitely classifies as some form of insider trading because Cantor was involved in the debt ceiling negotiations and was privvy to classified information which he could have shared with the company he’s affiliated with and allowed them to bet in a canny manner. This is pretty much what Goldman Sachs did. Goldman Sachs knew that the bonds they were selling were junk bonds but they went ahead and sold them to individuals and companies so when the bottom fell out of the economy, Goldman Sachs made out like a bandit. Cantor knows that with the nervousness the repubs have created over the debt ceiling debate, and the threat of downgrade from Moody’s, he’s hoping he can run with that and rake in millions. The DOJ and the SEC have got to look into this. The House Ethics Committee have got to look into this. Who does this? Who does this?!!!! No wonder he walked away from the debt ceiling negotiations. Then he has the audacity to accuse President Obama of being unpatriotic and not having Americas’s best interests at heart. According to the article he’s not a very smart investor because the company lost 31% of its stock. Thank goodness. I hope the company’s stock continues to deplete until it goes bust. All of the individuals who have shares in that company are disgusting. How can a person with a conscience knowingly bet against said person’s country’s treasury bonds. I hope all news media outlets lead with this story b/c if there ever was an insider trading scam… then this it.

Indeed – will Chuck Todd be quick to come out and declare that Eric Cantor is personally motivated for the country’s failure, just as he said that President Obama only wanted to restore the economy to personally benefit from his investment in Treasury bonds? I think Cantor’s personal agenda is far more nefarious and destructive.

I hope this gets wide play, especially as it seems to confirm that Republicans are pushing policies that are deliberately designed to tank the economy in order to use that to their political advantage.

Cantor seems especially motivated by self-interest. He seems just as eager to undermine Boehner as he is to bring down the President. Are there no statesmen left in the GOP?

If Eric Cantor has been exposed by the Wall Street Journal (Rupert Murdoch’s mouthpiece) then maybe there is some serious push back by those of great wealth who will lose their shirts along with the rest of us if the economy is put in jeopardy.

    • June 26, 2011 at 7:08 pm

That’s huge. Cantor can’t claim the liberal media is out to get him. This also gives Obama and Boehner more leverage to get the deal done. When he walked out of the negotiations Wall Street dropped this bomb to let them know they ain’t playing.

Breitbart only deals in distractions. So whenever a story is tied to him, I look for the REAL story that he is trying to divert attention from. In Weiner’s case, it was and still is the issue of Unca Clarence Thomas and his wife. They have “ethical” issues surrounding making money from ultra liberal organizations, not to mention her taking money to start a tea bagger organization.

OT: Here’s a nice little story:

Justin Bieber Fulfills Barack Obama Promise

To Prove that the United State’s President Barack Obama is a man of his words, Justin Bieber met one of his young fans whose father was died in 9/11 terrorist attacks.

According to details, last month the President of The United States was at an event at Ground Zero last month where he promised Payton Wall, the 14 year old Bieber fan that he could arrange a meeting of the girl fan with Bieber.

The White House took its President’s promise by heart and contacted Justin Bieber to put the plan in motion.

Justin Bieber met Payton Wall, her sister Avery and their friend Madison Roberson on this Thursday in NYC. The meeting took place just after the Macy’s near riot in Times Square.

Payton Wall told to the NY Post that she was more nervous meeting Justin Bieber than she was meeting The President of the United States of America.

The article ends by asking: What should we say; teen phenomenon or the world has changed now?

WASHINGTON — It was another day of Obama bashing in the Capitol.

“I’m profoundly disappointed,” one lawmaker said at a news conference last week.

“A disappointment to say the least,” said another.

    “Wrong decision,” said a third.

    “His proposal failed.”

    “It is unjustifiable.”

    “Quite simply unconscionable.”

What stood out at this particular gripe session, however, was that the speakers were all Democrats.

As they stood on the podium in a House television studio and spoke into the cameras, these liberal members were complaining about the slow pace of President Obama’s pullout from Afghanistan. But they could just as well have been talking about a score of other White House actions that have infuriated them:

Well, Well, Well!! This is very big news indeed and I hope that we can all jump on this and demand some answers. No wonder these extreme right wingers are trying to push the economy overboard!! They stand to gain in more ways than one from a failed US economy – oh my!!!

At least to me, this WSJ article also further explains why recently, there have been a few rumblings in the news about whether the republicans are purposefully pushing policies which they know will damage the economy. Remember the articles by Steve Benen’s and Michael Tomaskey that Chipssticks, posted a few weeks ago and which she repeated here on TOD just yesterday under : “ah, true patriots”?

I am now re-looking at the comments that Senator Chuck Schumer and Dick Durbin about the GOP policies to damage the economy for their gain. May be between it is my evil mind; but I now clearly have evidence that links these articles about GOP sabotaging the economy and this Eric Cantor financial betrayal.

When these article were first written, the explanation was expected political advantage and gain if the US economy tanks. Now we see that the political gains are also followed by personal financial gain – this is disgusting!!!!

Greed is a dangerous thing and when coupled with political ambition then this is a poisonous and often political self-defeating. Cantor has bitten off more than he can chew and the money people on Wall Street appear to have produced their political card to check his arrogance. I do not think Cantor and his group of supporters and teaparty extremists are going to link this.

    • June 26, 2011 at 8:43 pm

      Exactly.

And now that it’s in the Wall Street Journal, that is the green light for the rest of the media to pick it up. Most of these “journalists” are simply newsreaders — they let someone else do the digging, and then they just republish it — especially if it’s a right-leaning publication like the Journal.

These transcribers are really spineless scaredy cats and investigative journalism is the furthest thing from their mind — somebody might not like them! But the fact that a Daddy Figure publication is exposing this (probably for its own greedy purposes), gives them cover to “report” it.

That abbreviated editorial was in the WashPost today, written by Milbank. Some of the people who were bashing him were named. I was furious & I tweeted 3 of them the editorial with a #RovesHelper #Traitor hashtags . I’m thinking probably not a good idea b/c people think I’m nuts, but the Sun A.M. shows were bashing him & everything I read was bashing him & 16 mos. before the election & Rove is already running ads & this whiny editorial just flipped me out! I had a bad week.. It was Lynn Woolsey, Kucinich & the other name escapes me. Sigh

I have made a decision to fight back against Daily kos, their diaries are nothing but opinion and should not be mistaken as progressive. I will be blasting them on twitter as much as i can

Good for you and thank you Tulips. That place is a toxic mess. They are trying to undermine the President’s support as much as possible and are too coward to be up front about it.

Exactly. Adept2 has a diary up on the wreck list asking if there can be just one Front pager to write about the president’s achievements instead of the daily drumbeat of criticisms.

You would think their daily front page and wreck list would be filled with the issues concerning debt ceiling, Ryan’s Medicare, etc.

Long time ago, I told a friend about Daily Kos being a good place to get infor on Democrats. I had not talked to her for a while. Recently she called me asking if I was sure the place was still a Democratic site. She was upset about the constant negative stories ahout Democrats and the president. I told her to come here, BWD, TPV or Weseeyou.

Lots of folks in my immigrant circles are angry about the way PBO is treated in the media.

I went and read the diary and regret giving that site the click. The entire thread is full of Obama bashing and spin from BBB who has ODS and was promoted to the frontpage because he hates Obama and AdamB claiming that they are the true progressives and they are being fair to Obama. Until the Obama supporters leave the site en masse, that site will continue to use you for site hits while writing hit pieces on Obama. Every time you click there, you give them legitimacy to speak for the base. Why Black Kos hasn’t left is beyond me.

I think she is overrated. People say she is smart and so she lets that go to her head and thinks that she is smarter than our president.

In my note to her (copied to her colleagues, her bosses and others in the media), I sent her a quote from Al Neuharth from the USA today in which he compared her to Rush Limbuagh. She did not like that at all. As well I sent her the feedback she sent to Al asking why he would insult her and her network. I told her that when my husband first read the piece to me, I told him Al was crazy for comparing her to the dough boy, but after hearing what she said about POTUS, I wasn’t so sure. After all given that this presidnet had done more for the gay community than any other president and she could come out and say what she said, it was easy to see why the man would want to compare her with Limbaugh.

I also told her that PBO, as a brown man of color, did not get to where he is by taking instructions from them about what he needed to say in a speech, how to think or behave.

        .

Totally off subject but I did something I rarely do – followed a link to Huff n Puff and saw something about Maddow and her rant against the President. Well wasn’t I pleasantly surprised when I read through the comments that most people seem to feel she went way too far and were very upset with her!!!!! I think she and MSNBC are getting an ear full.

I just wish she had never gone there in the first place. It was unnecessarily dishonest, and sullied her credibility. I’m hoping that she apologizes this week.

Those “went way too far” comments remind me of something one of the Balloon Juicer’s said about a poll indicating 62% recognize POTUS inherited the current economic conditions. The point involved “self-evident truths”: One of the common frustrations a lot of us have with Obama is his reluctance to mention the Bush-era mistakes that led to our current economic situation. But if people already believe that, why waste some of their limited attention span to tell them something they already know? We spend a lot of time here dissecting the latest emanations from the noise machine. It’s good to remember that some truths are so self-evident that the noise machine isn’t making as big a dent as we might think.

If things are more self-evident than we are ever led to believe (and Molly Ivins really respected the power of the American voter &, btw, believed Senator Obama was “the only Democrat with any Elvis to him”) then I think we should operate in this “knowing” and awareness like Molly did. Things are not as ambiguous as they seem.

Hi theo67, in my letter to her, I politely asked her to at least give me that much, and apology to the President and all who heard her. I hope that she will comply, at least.

Warren Buffett also said, “If class warfare is being waged in America, my class is clearly winning.”

        June 27, 2011 at 3:08 am

That’s even better. Another version of that is (it’s the rich class making war), “There’s class warfare, all right,” Mr. Buffett said, “but it’s my class, the rich class, that’s making war, and we’re winning.”

Which I take to mean, in Cantor’s case, that he’s directly participating in maintaining class warfare.

So prior to Sep 2008 there was a systematic dismantling (with GOP collusion) of the middle class. During the financial meltdown the narrative was the economy was on the operating table, held together with duct tape. However, lucky for us, we did manage to isolate the main culprit: ACORN. Problem solved, yai for America!

But, we need to complete the work that was started in 2008 and rehabilitate the economy — which the GOP is doing everything to stop.

All the GOP has managed to do is put the pedal to the metal and varoom class warfare. Which is why I support The Fed continuing quantitative easing and implement QE3, and if necessary, QE4, QE5 and so on.

Remember? Think Progress reported on June 17th –

Paul Ryan’s Budget Plan Gives $45 Billion In Oil Subsidies: Benefits Ryan’s Family Interest

    Now we have this –

    Eric Cantor “betting against America”

Connecting the dots is so easy. All we need to look at are the “cuts” happening across the country by the GOP/TP governors and particularly those with a GOP/TP majority Assembly and Senate, combine these to the “cuts” passed by the United States House of Representatives and add all of these things to the Citizens United ruling of the Robert’s Court and the past and current questionable actions of Justice Clarence Thomas.

I’ll be doing my part not to have a repeat of the 2010 mid-term. Living in a country that looks like current Michigan is NOT my cup of tea! It’s bad enough dealing with and fighting my state’s current GOP/TP governor and his GOP/TP majority Assembly and Senate!

Let us all work hard and pray for God’s help to give President Barack Obama a second term! If ANY GOP/TP gets his or her foot in the door of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the United States of America is doomed!

I did a Google search on “Cantor bet against America” and there were over 100,000 results dating back several months. This isn’t new for Cantor – I don’t know how he’s still a member of the US government when he is actively working against the country.

Ryan is another Koch-roach. If we can’t wake America up to this glaring, ugly reality, I agree with your assessment, the United States of America is doomed!

what is really troublesome to me is that Think Progress wrote this article on June 18th, 2010 before the midterm elections. I am so upset right now thinking how different the midterm elections would have turned out if the people in Virginia? knew that he was betting on the economy to fail. Why would he do anything about jobs if it would mean that he will lose money.

  35. June 27, 2011 at 6:20 am

I’m going to follow the news and see who will have anything to say about our good old boy Eric Cantor and what he did.

    • June 27, 2011 at 6:26 am

I hate to keep talking about that picture of Cantor at the Congressional picnic, but it is ugly, creepy, whatever you want to call it. Something strange. Then those shades doesn’t help.

What is most infuriating is this story is over a year old, but even so….. he still should be investigated. NOW.

EVERYONE in Congress needs to have their finances/investments made public.
