She looks sad. And she also isn’t overly glammed up befitting the solemn occasion.

I noticed throughout the whole event that she did not seem herself. Perhaps she’s feeling a lot of sadness or maybe there are other things burdening her. But I agree, her seemed very deep in thought.

I didn’t recognize her. She looks younger and sad, and fittingly, not glam.

Maria Shriver, not surprisingly, looks depleted. GB is a mess.

RIP Mrs Ford. My very Democratic family respected you greatly. Thank you for all you did for women with this epidemic of a disease and for people with addictions. You were a role model to my mother.

Luci1119, It’s a somber moment; so that’s why she probably looks serious. I saw a little clip of the funeral and GWB kept looking at MO hoping she would glance his way. Secretary Clinton purposely sat between GWB and MO. Mo just kept looking at her program and GWB kept looking at her, trying to decide if he should anything. Frankly it looked really awkward and finally H.Clinton engaged him in conversation.

I sincerely wish that Betty Ford rest in eternal peace. She may have been a republican, but not a messed up one by today’s republican standards. She supported Roe v. Wade when it became law in the 70’s and that certainly wasn’t a popular position; especially for a republican first lady. She supported marriage equality for all regardless of sexual orientation. She opened the Betty Ford Center; a rehabililtation clinic and changed the conversation on addiction (prescription drugs, alcohol, illegal substances and otherwise) so that addicts would not be made to feel like outcasts. After she got breast cancer, she became a champion for womens health. Today’s republican would do well to take a leaf out of her book.

The seating was pre-arranged with the designated secret service directly behind each dignitary. At the end of the service, Mrs. Obama leaned over Hilary and shook GW’s hand and he gave her a kiss on the cheek, then SS held Mrs. Obama back and she then went over to Mrs. Reagan and shook her hand and gave her a kiss, then the SS escorted Mrs. Obama out the back way while everyone else went out the front with GW escorted Mrs. Reagan who had to slow GW down so she could walk with her cane. He’s such a airhead.

I noticed GW doing that. She finally acknowledged him at the end with a handshake and a kiss on the cheek. I liked when Mrs. Roberts was talking about old school washington where people differed politically but they hung out together after they fought for what they believed in. They socialized with each other and their kids did the same. I love that Mrs. Carter went to Mrs. Ford’s house and didn’t tell her that President Carter would be running for president to unseat her hubby. I love that they were friends till the end. What the fuck happened to this country in the last 20 years? No wonder Mrs. Ford wanted her funeral to be about politics. She shed a lot of light on how low we’ve sunk. Rest in peace Mrs. Ford. God love you, you were a good woman, and probably a good role model for women all over this country and especially to all the political wives who served with you and after you.
ps- Didn’t like Mrs. Roberts’ dig at Hilary when she was talking about how Mrs. Ford wasn’t “strident” and didn’t try to –extreme paraphrasing, Cokie said it nicer–take over her husband’s presidency like others had been accused of. Even Mrs. Fords daughter looked across the aisles and chuckled.

She reminds me of Sasha in the first photo.

      • July 12, 2011 at 8:45 pm

Guess what? I was thinking the same thing, about FLOTUS looking like Sasha in that picture. And we are so use to seeing FLOTUS smile. We’re not use to the serious look. But this is no smiling moment. And maybe she didn’t want to really be there.

        • July 12, 2011 at 8:55 pm

But you know, like us all you go through those periods when you want to change your hair style. You want something new, something different. Maybe that is what FLOTUS is going through. I’m sure she will be doing some more changing.

        • July 12, 2011 at 9:01 pm

Or maybe FLOTUS didn’t feel good, anyway all I’m doing is alot of guessing. I’m glad she was able to attend the funeral and show respect to the Ford family.

I watched it also and Mrs O looked sorrowful (and rightly so) but also tired or worried or stressed! I don’t know, maybe I am over reacting…but throughout the service whenever they showed Mrs O I kept saying to myself “Why Michelle looking like that?”. She also looked uncomfortable and this is NOT the Michelle we know. She is one to blend in so well but I feel GWB had something to do with it lol. He kept looking at Michelle and she probably saw him at the corner of her eyes. Hey GWB can make a lot of people uncomfortable! I am feeling like this round and round with the debt ceiling crisis is taking a toll on PBO. I noticed he looks a bit tired also and Michelle is the one who has to listen to him every night about all the nutjobs he had to face throughout the day and she is the one who sees him up late in the night trying to figure out all these problems and then wake up in the morning to hear Repubs and media personalities bash him and blame him for everything that goes wrong, when clearly he does not and cannot make all the decisions! I can just imagine how much pressure it puts on a spouse to see their most loved one go through the ish PBO goes through! Anyways most of you all prob asleep and I need to do the same…goodnight to all! Thanks Chips

I like First Lady Obama with her hair down more than these recent up-do’s. I think that’s what you’re seeing too luci1119. As for the service for former First Lady Betty Ford, I thought it was beautiful. I so admire former First Lady Mrs. Carter, bless her heart. I pray to God to give the Ford family strength in their time of mourning.

Yet…….sigh…..it’s been a long day! Can’t imagine what President is feeling if I’m this tired just being from being a pain at Huffies!!

  4. July 12, 2011 at 6:51 pm

Anybody see PBO’s interview with Scott Pelley on CBS Evening news? I thought Pelley wanted the country to know that the Repubs were up to no good. I liked how he stressed McConnell’s words that as long as PBO was president, nothing would get done.

He asked the president about this twice giving PBO the chance to respond to McConnell that he was going to have to deal with him because he was president for at least the next year and half.

I didn’t care much for the reporter who came on afterwards. She had more Republican spin, to my mind. But I thought Pelley was good

Scott Pelley has been impressing me from day one. He reports fact no bullshit allowed. The interview was great. He reported on how childish the repubs were being and he was respectful to PBO and let him get his thoughts through loud and clear. So called journalists would be wise to sit at Scott Pelley’s feet and glean what it is to be a real journalist.

I’m looking forward to seeing it. I’ve always liked Scott Pelley on 60 Minutes. He’s smart and professional and asks very thoughtful questions. I hope he continues to stick to his principles and ethics.

Since I am one of those who watches out for these things, I am glad to see that the principal Secret Service Agent for First Lady Michelle Obama is back to his duties of putting it all on the line for her safety.

I had not seen him at his postion behind Mrs Obama during the last few weeks. Suspect he was either taking a much-needed vacation or he was getting additional training at headquarters.

wherever he has been we are grateful for his service, his family’s sacrifice, and the service of so many in the US Secret Service

May Betty Ford rest in peace. This is my favorite story about Betty Ford.
Betty Ford, Dancing On The Table

I’m not convinced, in her heart, that she was a Republican, at least not the kind that exist these days…

I watched the service for Betty Ford. She was also someone I admired greatly. I also appreciated Cokie Roberts talk. She talked about how all the wives and congresspeople socialized no matter what party. They were gracious to each other. Not like they are today. You could tell these older Repubs are appalled by these new young ones who care only about themselves and not the whole country.

I watched also MTmarilyn. I always liked and appreciated Betty Ford. I have collected books on all of our First Ladies from my memory of growing up with them. I hope that I will live to see and read a great one about First Lady Michelle Obama as well. Nice service for her today. It is hot out here in Ca.

I had always heard that Nancy Reagan couldn’t stand Betty Ford. I thought Betty Ford was a wonderful women.

President Johnson’s daughter is in the center, wearing white, as is Mrs. Reagan for some weird reason.

I started watching CBS Evening News the first night Scott Pelley took over. It has been a relief…hard news from around the world, not tabloid domestic stuff. I like international news, we are part of the world and what happens all around the world does affect us. Also, the set was a remake of Walter Cronkite’s backdrop…the world, and I’m of an age that remembers him and his broadcasts. I just hope Pelley keeps up the quality. The interview tonight was clear and fair. He did not talk through the President’s answers….what a change. Nor did he twist the President’s answers.
