      CSPAN-3 NEXT:

President Obama: Town hall meeting on debt & deficit LIVE 11a.m. EST

I expect President Obama to polish off the Republican Party today with the USA editorial and the town hall. I am loving his relentless use of the bully pulpit to engage the American people. i especially think those local interviews have made a big difference in getting out his message. Information is power and the more the American people learn the more isolated the GOP becomes.

The Republican Party allegiance is to Grover Norqist and his no taxes under any circumstances pledge, not the Constitution. The curtain has been pulled back and I can’t wait for the scathing editorials that will inevitably be written once this crisis is resolved. The postmortems are going to be brutal. The GOP is going to have a hard time explaining why their manufactured crisis was not tantamount to sabotage. They have lost all credibility. I hope they are delegitimized for decades. They are the most dangerous threat to the well being of this country.

Lets hope so Ladyhawke. For some reason the Rethugs always seem to get another REPRIEVE by the American public. We have no further place to look than the Nov. 2010 midterms. Hopefully the American people are finally waking up and will kick these TREASONIST clowns to the curb in 2012!!

Could have used your passion in an argument I was having over at Raw Story regarding these loons…you can still get over there and join in the fun:) You should see some of the ignorant bastards falling all over themselves over there to paint PBO has some corporatist freak that is doing the same thing as Bush…OMFG these people are willfullly ignorant and LOVE the faux outrage. Got one over there that would love for Bachmann to win. What do you say, Keith?

          • July 22, 2011 at 6:14 pm

I also tried over at Raw Story, tried to bring some sense there, but….it’s like talking to a brick wall. I now know how Sysyphus felt.

I’m done with that site. The constant wailing and gnashing of teeth, the bilious comments, the Ron Paul elevation….I’ve had it. No sanity left over there.

She is a sweetheart. I love how she told him that in her opinion his Presidency has been successful and that’s all that matters. Ain’t that the truth.

Also the guy who asked about the 14th amendment clause and reassurring the President that the American people would kick out the hooligans in the house of reps come 2012. Hahahaha.

        Hooligans out come 2012.

      • July 22, 2011 at 12:20 pm

I loved those two people: the girl who was like: “Obviously, you’ve had a very successful presidency…” —-Loved, loved, lurved that! and I loved his response to her like: “we’ll I’m glad that it’s been obvious to you,” Chuckle, chuckle.
Also loved they guy who was like: “this isn’t even going to take effect till the out years, so why not wait till after 2012 when all the hooligans are gone.” — I bet my last 2 cents PBO wanted to laugh at that!
Also, when the same guy asked about the 14th Amendment, PBO’s response: “i’ve had my lawyer look at it…. they weren’t convinced”—meaning, I could use it and spend the entire time up to the election fighting off impeachment which is exactly what the GOP would want to happen.
ps- PBO was dynamite baby!!! hehe. When he was talking about the heat and shorts, someone said something to him about his legs and he said thank you, I’m going to tell Michelle that. What did the person say?

So far I love this audience. They are really paying attention to what’s going on and not what the talking heads are dishing up. Thank goodness he’s using the Abraham Lincoln Emancipation Proclamation adage. People have to wake up and think for themselves. Compromise is not a dirty word.

Yes, yes, yes, I loved the questions that were presented to the President today. They couldn’t have been better if they were scripted! These were real American’s asking real questions and making sensible comments! It was GREAT! I bet the President left there feeling that the American people support what he’s trying to accomplish! Great job University of Maryland!!!!! I also have to watch the end and see how people scramble over one another just to have the opportunity to get a hand shake from President Obama!!! The smile on my face stays there for many moments afterwards and I can imagine how long the smile and the effects last for them.

Good question followed by a beautiful answer.

Ironically, I was rewatching the first part of Ken Burns’ doc on the Civil War, and Shelby Foote talked about Americans’ greatest strength being a “genius for compromise.” In light of the actions of House Republicans, it gave me a chill. This townhall helps to restore hope.

Oh, but I am SO GLAD HE GOT HIS QUESTION IN!!! WOOOO HOOOO. He just made my day. See, I work with children with special health care needs. And he was so right. The Disability Community is very, very, VERY concerned about any proposed changes.

The changes that a lot of people think are small, can be HUGE for folks with special needs. The ‘devil’ is in the details” when it comes to how policy changes affect people who have very specific needs to make it thru the day. Especially since Rethugs are trying to act like Medicaid only helps out poor, lazy, no good, deadbeat, shiftless, excuses-for-human-beings.

He represented very well!! I am so proud of him. He spoke for the concerns of thousands and thousands of people with his question and comments.

        July 22, 2011 at 12:27 pm

That young man also left me choked up. I love how he asked the President in a polite voice to please not forget those suffering from disabilities and otherwise who don’t have lobbyists to speak for them during the debt ceiling talks. He also reiterated how messed up it was that instead of doing the peoples work, Sen. McConnell’s first order of the day is to make President Obama a one-term President. The audience was fantastic. A diverse collection of questions and not talking points others have been brainwashed into asking by the msm, GOP and PL. It gives me hope that there are millions out there like this audience who are really paying attention to who is on their side on the federal level.

      • July 22, 2011 at 12:27 pm

so true. I was thinking that too. But then I was like: if I had the chance to talk to PBO, what would I ask him about? Answer: NOT the debt ceiling especially in light of the fact that I know it’s important to raise, and the where, wherefores and the whys. Instead I’d ask him about something important to me. Also, I think his friend Frank brought home the issue of debt and the economy very well with the question about FDR. PBO gave us a history lesson, a lesson on economics, let us into his private conversations, and gave us inspiration that our best days are ahead all in that answer to the last question. PBO was banging baby!

    • July 22, 2011 at 12:30 pm

That’s exactly what I was thinking as he ended his answer to Frank and made his way down to the audience to shake hands. The Only In America song came on and I was like: if it isn’t already, please make this his theme song for the campaign!! —it’s perfect, it gives people hope and joy and a true sense that we can do BIG things, and that our best days are ahead of us!

I also think the young man’s comment about Mr. Robinson (Pres. Obama’s father-in-law) was perfectly phrased. He made it personal but not in a maudlin way. And Pres. Obama, as he always does, took the time to acknowledge the difficulties of his father-in-law and then expanded his answer!

Now, we have to make the ClownCarCrazies TM (Thank you Tally/Bardgal!) 8) realize that people with disabilities, are just as American, just as patriotic, and can be just as much a part of the fabric of America as the rest of us!! All they need is a little help from their friends! That help must include concrete, supportive and creative policies that take their very real, different needs into consideration.

Hey guys heads up on BREAKING but not so BREAKING NEWS: Majority Leader Harry Reid called up a vote for the Cut, Cap and Balance Act (CCB) which was proposed by the tea party wing of the GOP in the house of reps (It’s basically a Paul Ryan Kill Medicare Bill on STEROIDS) and the bill failed in the senate by a vote of 51-46. Reid called up the vote to shut the house GOP up and reiterate what a catastrophically disastrous bill it was. Now we can hopefully move on to the deal that the Gang of six is drafting.

And according to The Guardian, Reid called off the weekend session of the Senate, and Boehner is getting isolated.

“Leaving Obama’s town hall, is there any chance of a deal on the table today? Not according to Republican leader and Speaker of the House John Boehner, who has held a press conference just now:

There was no agreement, publicly, privately, never an agreement, and frankly not close to an agreement. So I suggest that it’s going to be a hot weekend here in Washington DC.

The money they are using to go on this self-serving tour could be used to help a poor family, since they are so concerned about poverty. What are their solutions aside from complaining and whining? I am sure Tom Journer who has the bully pulpit will address this.

    • July 22, 2011 at 1:39 pm

do you have a link for that? If AARP is paying for -putting out $$$ in support against this President then WE need to make that widely known. I KNOW a lot of people who would give up their AARP affiliation. I’m not a fan of AARP anyway but I want to know if this is accurate.

AARP was bought by Aetna – and now they are nothing more than a front for the Health Insurance giant.

Of COURSE they’re spending billions to defeat Obama, because they, like all the rest of these hideous cartels, want the ACA repealed.

Thanks to the ACA, Health Insurance companies now have to actually PAY 85% of the money they receive in premiums on CLAIMS, and actual HEALTH CARE, instead of legally embezzling from their subscribers.

        FUCK. THEM.

        July 22, 2011 at 3:18 pm

Corny and Travis says that AARP and others are their sponsors when they were on Piers Morgan. I cannot forget their behavior when ask, if they were going to vote for President Obama again in 2012, they laughed in Piers face, as if he asked them to eat sheit!

        • July 22, 2011 at 4:50 pm

thank you Blue- I’ll be writing and tweeting AARP- this is BS on their part- they are supposed to be enlightening and looking out for seniors- not taking parts in attacks on the guy defending SS and Medicare.

Another thing I’ve noticed of late is that I get lotsa emails from left leaning groups that now place their attacks on Congress- they never single out Republicans.. it’s always lumped into “congress”. I’ve began writing to these entities and telling them that is unacceptable and then I unsubscribe to them. I see what they’re doing- by stating “congress” rather than placing the blame of things squarely onto republicans- these ‘groups’ can then solicit donations from both dems and repubs. And anyone that places their attacks on the President- the only person seriously working like a grown up- those folks hear from me straight away. I’m really really tired of lies and fiction all in the name of $$$$$$$$$$.

Here is my suggestion. If you know the poverty tour is coming to your town, organize a protest outside of where they are going to be parking their bus. I don’t care if it is a one man protest.

Also, write letters to your local newspaper and contact your local TV stations registering your disgust. That is what I plan to do.

If I hear of them coming to my town, I am going to make up a cardboard and hang it around my neck explaining front and back what these people are about.

If we do it in every city, at least the people they are coming to town to make a fool of with their disingenuous acts will get a deeper look at them.

Couple all of this with contacting the AARP. Also, we can contact Radio hosts like Tom Joyner, Steve Harvey, Michael Baisen, and a whole host of others to alert them about this disgusting bunch.

These are the guys that are taking their programs into the black communities holding programs to benefit the needy.

Tavis and Cornel are not concerned with the idea of for example, “taking a loved one to the doctor.” Each year Joyner and his crew, fan out in our communities and actually help people to get screened for various diseases, etc. Next two weeks, he and his crew will be out in the various states with their back to school program giving out school suppiies to students.

We should not let these self-aggrandizing frauds into our communities to get people to vote against their own interest for the solely to line their pockets.

Africa, it isn’t worth the effort. Black folk will vote for PO in 2012. Period.

What the heck would we look like voting for Bachman, TPAWlenty, etc?

Tavis and Cornel has never done anything of consequence to elevate the black community. NEVER. There is no need to contact anyone because we all know what this is about.

Haters gonna hate. Watch and see who shows up at these bus tour events. It won’t even be 10 people. Don’t waste the effort or resources on promoting these fools. Let them pay the gas money to go where ever they want to go and not have nothing to show for it. Thing is, black folk will tell you what they think. So they will get what they get and should not get upset.

        • July 22, 2011 at 4:51 pm

I am sorry. I am not taking anything for granted. I won’t give these people not a single chance to pollute people’s mind with their dirty money.

While I know African Americans are going to vote for the president, I just can’t accept these guys going around spreading lies. If they come to my town, they will definitely hear from me.

      Blue.

AAs will stand by the President regardless of any bus tour sponsored by whatever group. We will vote for President Obama in 2012 no matter what and that is what folks find frustrating. The more shade that is thrown at PO, the closer AAs will pull toward him. The louder the vitriol, the more AAs will support him.

      Period. End of story.

Treat yourself to a terrific interview with National Security Advisor Tom Donilon, brilliant and close advisor to the President:

He addresses the emergence of Asia, the problems with Pakistan, Netanyahu and the capture of OBL among other things. Incredibly reassuring to know that people like Donilon are in such critical positions and right hand to PBO.

Pawlenty Creates Phony Faith Website To Encourage Iowans To Volunteer For His Campaign

      July 22, 2011 at 2:57 pm

Pawlenty just reeks of desperation. The stench of Eau de Desperacion (I know I’m mixing foreign languages) precedes him before he enters a room. I saw a clip of him on Morning Joe this morning where he was talking to a group of Iowan voters about his executive experience as Governor of Minnesota that automatically qualified him to be President without need of an election. I couldn’t believe my eyes and ears when he said the reason President Obama is a catastrophic failure of a President, is that he never held executive position before. He never was a CEO, or ran a business. He mocked President Obama for being a community organizer and a Constitutional Law Professor and for only being in the senate long enough to as he put it “enjoy the perks of the office and decorate the office.” First of all, when the heck did anyone think it’s ok to mock teachers and educators. Without these so called elite professors, where would the masses be? We’d have more of an uneducated society than we do now. Without community organizers, poor segments of society would never have the ears of leadership and demand the rights owed to them and equal treatment. Who the heck keeps peddling this false meme that being a business owner qualifies one to run a country? The Government should never ever be run as a business simply because it is not in it for profit and loss. When Government is run as a business, we end up with the mess that was 8 years of the GWB Administration. After calming down, I realized that Pawlenty is trying to deflect attention from his atrocious run as Gov. of Minnesota where he left the state $6.5 billion in debt. And it ain’t working because he keeps sinking and sinking in the polls.

      • July 22, 2011 at 4:15 pm

Where are my fellow Minnesotans. Yes, Tim Pawlenty left MN with a $6.5 billion deficit.

This should be his campaign slogan: Elect Tim Paw, if you want me to drive your states into a DITCH!

  38. July 22, 2011 at 3:08 pm

Okay, this is gonna sound weird, but here goes. I love how PBO NEVER sweats. I mean that figuratively as well as literally. I mean, he could be in the hottest places where everyone is sweating bullets but he always remains cool and dry. I ‘ll never forget the day he went to talk to the troops after the bin Laden thing. He’d gone to meet with members of Seal Team 6 and then went to talk to the troops. I remember watching on teevee as reporters talked about the heat and then PBO came out in a white dress shirt, waving to the group with no sweat stains under his pits. I remember when he went to The City of God, outside in the heat, playing soccer with kids, etc. and still no sweating. Then today, when everybody is feeling the heat from New York, Maryland to Florida, PBO comes out looking fresh, crisp and yummy! Seriously, I’m beginning to believe that the man doesn’t have any sweat glands. How do you explain this anomaly? It’s like he’s getting to be more and more and more perfect in every way! This is crazy! Now how am I gonna find a man when he’ll have to compete with all these Obamalistic expectations? Mr. President, I blame you for my becoming an old maid, sir. If only you weren’t so damned hot. :?

“The Arrogance” of Serving While Black…A Rant
    snip
    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
I don’t think anyone was under some illusion that the election of Barack Obama actually meant the end of racism in America. I’m pretty sure that the President knew it better than anyone. After all, he saw it every day, from the moment he announced his candidacy. To some degree, he saw it within his own party during the primaries. And he saw it in all ugliness during the general election. For half of this country, he was “That One”. No matter how big and clear his victory was. No matter how smart he is. No matter how decent he is. No matter what a true patriot he is. No matter how optimistic and positive his vision for America is. All that didn’t matter. Because at the end of the day, he was still Black.

I’m getting pretty old. I remember where I was on November 22, 1963. I’ve seen many presidents… some were feared, some were hated, some were adored, some popular and some not. But all of them, without exception, were treated with the respect deserved by the office of the president of the United States.

I just sent this to Senator Sanders via http://sanders.senate.gov/contact/contact.cfm

    Senator Sanders,

Why aren’t you calling for anyone who signed the King Norquist pledge to RESIGN or be forced from office for sedition??? A pledge they hold higher than their oath of office and the US Constitution! If YOU, or any Dem senator had EVER signed such a pledge, the GOP would scream bloody murder and that person would be out of office within 24 hours of doing so. And yet… you are silent.

Why aren’t you calling out GOP members in Congress that the 14th Amendment clearly states “CONGRESS SHALL ENFORCE” [America to pay her bills]??? THERE IS NO CHOICE ON RAISING THE DEBT CEILING! Why aren’t you calling for removal from office those in the House who refuse to raise it for DERELICTION OF DUTY???? And yet… you are silent.

No, instead, you attack the POTUS, even when YOU KNOW VERY WELL – he has been up against RECORD filibustering, RECORD opposition, and a bunch of WELL FUNDED traitors who have held this country hostage and hate their own government and fellow countrymen so much they are WILLFULLY trying to crash the US ECONOMY.

HOW DARE YOU? YOU OF ALL PEOPLE!!!

I would never have believed it of you, but I heard it with my own ears. You are suggesting someone primary Obama.

Obama has NEVER been the problem. It’s the DEMS, who have NEVER, COLLECTIVELY, had his BACK. It’s the DEMS who have no spine, and should have been calling out the weak Congressional Members who have been bought by lobbyists, but remain silent.

If all of you HAD stood with THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WHO VOTED FOR HIM, we would have gotten so much more done, and he never would have had to so much as entertain giving up the Public Option in HCR, but he KNEW he didn’t have the votes, and because of that, he was forced into negotiating with these damn terrorists in the GOP.

I get that we never had 60 votes in the Senate. But when you had the opportunity THIS SESSION to change the filibuster rules, it was OUR SIDE that was weak, and failed to do so.

It was OUR SIDE that never game Obama the Progressive Army he needed.

TO DATE – he has NEVER stated he would put cuts to SS/Medicare/Medicade BENEFITS on the table. NOT ONCE. If I can listen and understand the words that come out of President Obama’s mouth, WHY CAN’T YOU??? He has talked about cutting other parts, like to providers (which worked before.)

Why aren’t YOU calling for the removal of the Contribution Cap on earnings so that EVERYONE pays the same percentage, including those who make over $106k a year?? WHY DON’T YOU DO THAT, INSTEAD OF ATTACKING YOUR PRESIDENT.

Let me be honest Senator, it doesn’t make Obama look weak when you say things like that. It makes YOU and the REST of the Dems look weak. And you want to know the saddest thing of all? Many of us are not surprised in the least.

My disappointment in you Senator, has shaken me to my core. I never thought YOU, of ALL PEOPLE would do anything remotely like this, ESPECIALLY at a time, IF THERE EVER WAS ONE, to have your PRESIDENT’S BACK.
