Well. He was setting the tone for his presidency back in ’05 (and earlier, of course). He has never strayed from the path he jumped on, in life, with Michelle at his side. This was a profound moment, and I wish it could be replayed all around the country at various townhalls or DNC or OFA gatherings – to remind us of what we have, and what some have grown to take for granted in him.
“Politics” may be “show business for ugly people,” as then-Senator Barack Obama said, but he sure isn’t one of the ugly people, is he?
OMG…Jacqueline…..you took the words right from me….i am sooooooo Amazzzzzzzzzed how he was so focused….how he uttered the same words..talked about the same things…..
it brings me to tears….but i do believe that we have something special in this man….
where would this country be…where would we be if McCain and Palin had won…..think about that for a moment….
Also note his great sense of humor back then. Cracks me up. He is as consistent as the sun rising in the east, setting in the west. Greatness personified.
utaustinliberal, a question I’ve wanted to ask you for a long time — are you living in Utah or Texas? (Or neither?) It’s just nice to know of a fellow sufferer in Utah.
Hey JKS, PamfromCalif is right. I attend the University of Texas at Austin – Goooooooooo LONGHORNS!!!!!!!!! – So since I bleed burnt orange ( my school colors) and vote blue; hence the name utaustinliberal.
You’re welcome Meta. When I see videos like this, I pinch myself in delight and astonishment; and I ask myself “How Did We Get Soooo Lucky?!!!!” I’m so grateful President Obama decided to run for office in the first place, won, is a FANTASTIC President, and decided to run for re-election again. God bless his heart.
I watched this video three times. I thought I had just about seen everything President Obama has been in, but I had never seen this before. Thanks Utaustinliberal. We are blessed to have you here.
Hey, fellow Longhorn here. that school is the best on the planet and the cosmopolitan city of Austin is also the best oasis in a rather politically ugly state. Cheers!!
consistent as ever- Mr. President Barack Obama. I think it would behoove many in this nation to read his books and really get a grasp on the solid foundation that is Barack Obama.
And by the way that was a really nice tribute by the NAACP- and the promise to always be there for ‘Mr. Obama’.
WOW – our President looked so young then! Both he and our First Lady looked fabulous And his words are so consistent – he spoke of people not having health care!! Who would have thought that he would be President in 2008!
Wow! I had not seen this before today, find myself moved in so many ways. A beautiful glimpse into how far we have come, and still so far we have to go! Thank you for posting this!
OMG, that just floored me right there. What a wonderful night for PBO and FLOTUS and all who celebrated his achievement at that point in history. What an incredible event for everyone who sees this display of ideas and intelligence and love and honor. THIS is an inspiration. BRAVO.
He stays true to his North Star. His sincere commitment to his values shines through as we travel back in time, year after year – to people from all walks of life, to health care, to education, to families, to honest community. His heart is huge and his determination is pure inspiration. LOVE.
You’re very welcome Chipsticks Since we’re all bathing in President Obama love, I think this tribute by Beyonce at the 2011 Glastonbury Festival was beautiful. It’s Etta James’s song “At Last” which Beyonce sang at the inauguration ball of President Obama. The Glastonbury video is filled with images of the Civil Rights movement (a reminder of the unveiling of MLK Jr’s memorial on August 28) and ends with the inauguration of President Obama and other inauguration moments. I love the part where President Obama’s image appeared and the Brits went nuts!!!!! Gosh they do LOVE him all around the world.
utaustinliberal, what a gift this morning. Both those videos are so beautiful. We are so fortunate to have this man as our President. And all of us here are such lucky to have you here to bring us all this love. What a community we are!!!! Yes We Can!!!!!!
Alright, utaustin. You’ve made my day with those 2 videos. My first thanks is down below. I loved the parts of the crowd roaring at the sight of PBO and at the end, someone held up a cut-out of his face. I quote Billy Crystal when I say…..”Marvelous”
You’re very welcome EDP4BHO. I’m thankful Chipsticks posted the video so everyone could see how consistent President Obama has been. We’re so lucky to have him and I’m glad there are millions of people all over the world who appreciate and love him.
Don’t Americans know how much people outside of the US love your president? It is a universal recognition of somehting inside of him which he projects onto the world and blesses us all.
As you might know almablanca, we have the hateful teabaggers and the despicable PL that hate/despise the President to their core. But thanks for your wonderful words about Potus and for sure he projects the same to us and blesses us all.
This really brings a lump to my throat utaustin. It’s a mixture of being proud of the President, proud of us for voting for him, proud of the Brit crowd for the spontaneous outburst of approval, and admiration of Beyonce for just going out there and letting the whole world know how she feels. So many good feelings.
utaustinliberal ‘gosh they do LOVE him all around the world’ Absolutely, despite what the media like to portray President Obama is ADORED here in the UK and worldwide.
That was a beautiful video, that song will ALWAYS remind me of the inauguration and the images of the civil rights movement and then PBO’s inauguration brought tears to my eyes! What a man! It just goes to show how in touch he is with everyday people when revellers at a music festeval go nuts when his image appears on a screen. Just think how crazy they would go if he were there in person! (OMG if he had been I would have had to have been there!! lol)
Also I see why they gave him the Nobel Peace Prize his first year in office. The Nobel Committee knew the values in our President were true and real. The ideas just follow from our President with ease and deep feeling that the whole world sees. That is why the lug heads try so hard to degrade him and can’t win.
Thank you so much UTAUSTINLIBERAL…you rock!!!…Wow…What a way to wake up:-)
Watching The MAN Blessed by GOD…only fitting that he bears the name BARACK…because in my eyes GOD never makes mistakes!!
What a gift he’s given us…I am filled with emotions….can’t help it…more kleenex (blaming it all on you Uta) love you
Hello utaustinliberal : love Austin! My daughter lives there and is working on a Ph.D. at UT (which has been so good to her … she already has two masters from there)! I had not seen/heard this speech. Thanks for posting it here this morning. daisydem
Hey Peggy, glad you love the video. I absolutely looooooooooooooooove Austin. It’s a wonderful city for young and old and even more wonderful for liberals. It’s full of hippies, freebirds, and the serious minded. It has EVERYTHING!!!!! Plus, UT is so freakin AMAZING!!! I loooooooooooooooove my school and the environment and I’m glad that your daughter found a place of welcome and comfort at Austin and at UT.
UT, sis you are on the roll today, thanks for sharing those two videos that I too hadnt watched before and ofcourse all thanks to Chipsticks for all the beautiful work that keeps us sane and going day in and day out. Havent posted these past weeks though I read all the posts and entire comments by all of you wonderful TODERS. All i can say is wow, you are the best.
Thank you for the kind words Asher. I’m sooo thankful for Chipsticks and the TOD family. It’s a blessing from the madness out there. I’m thankful Chips posted the video. She’s the best! and I’m glad that we have videos like this to remind us of how incredibly LUCKY we are to have Barack Obama as President of the United States of America.
Had to watch it twice (will probably watch it several more times), just to listen to President Obama’s inspirational message. If nothing else inspires people to re-elect our president in the upcoming presidential election, this video should do it. Between his words and the awesome song sung by Fantashia, what more do you need to help drive out the negative messages coming from the other side!
I know!!! This video is just one tool in our arsenal. We have work to do! Not one of the current GOP/TP candidates is worthy of stepping foot in the Oval Office, neither should American citizens be subjected to their leadership, nor should Americans have to hang their heads in shame having anyone of these people representing America across the world.
Meta, I read Dreams from my Father a while back before Barack Obama became President and then bought the audio book. I listen to it a lot, his voice is just so dreamy and relaxing. He so deserved the Grammy he won both for that and the Audacity of Hope.
i recently looked thru the fantastic archives that Chips has provided on her page…i wanted to reveiw once again…The President’t speech on race….it is still as profound now as it was then…..
Ms Chips if you would…could you repost that video…..it truly bears viewing again…..
Charles Blow writes a silly column in the NYT President Obama being “robotic” and then gets upset when FOX News uses his column to further attack the President. I tweeted him and asked him what exactly did he really expect and what did he hope to accomplish by writing this column based on a flawed premise in the first place.
I hate when these columnists try to pretend that campaigning as a candidate in the 2008 election is the same thing as governing the country and then use this flawed assumption to attack the President. This has got to be one of the most intellectually lazy exercises that these wannabe columnists engage in all the time.d
Anyone who is on Twitter I recommend pushing back on Mr. Blow and his vapid op-ed.
Thanks for this hopefruit2. There’s a saying “You Campaign In Poetry And Govern In Prose.” Everytime I hear reporters and pundits try to pretend as though the Obama 2008 campaign was 100% flawless or 100% easy breezy. There were missteps and stumbles. There were difficult and hard times. But through it all there was a sense of perseverance, hope, stick-to-it-ness, grit, and determination. The notion that President Obama is “robotic” is frankly 100% false and disinegnuous. We see how warm, friendly, compassionate, and kind he is everyday. Now Charles Blow wants to whine, complain, and tell Fox News to stop using his column as another example of “the liberal lefts anger with President Obama.” When one puts such nonsense out, one should not complain when it comes back to bite one in the gluteus maximus. I’m off to tweet him.
Yeah I’m about tired of Mr. Charles Blow and considering just unfollowing him and his intellectual nonsense.. these columnists all want to get attention… and they know the magic words are “Barack Obama is/should/can’t/doesn’t.. and then negative madeup crap”. They are so full of themselves and so freaking boring. It takes little skill to join the bandwagon and follow along with the teevee bouncing balls of destruction- Greed thy name is ‘journalist’
Yea, his piece of crap column really upset me. Less because of what he wrote – Sort of getting use to all pundits slashing PBO – But exactly because of what followed. When you call PBO ugly names, what do you think is going to happen? What lines do you think people will quote? And most of all, how can you not expect FOX to do exactly what they’ve done?
All the Blows of the world, they have no idea the damage they’re causing.
Exactly BWD – Blow needs a deflator to blow all that hot air out of him.
And by the way thanks for tweeting the President’s summer reading list. I’m off to Amazon.com to check out these books! (not buying yet, just window shopping )
He’s another one who gets invited on the cable shows, like Morning Joe, because he is always more than willing to criticize Obama. They’re using their criticism of Obama as a career stepping stone. It’s pretty disgusting that Blow and others who do the same have no regard for the damage they do.
Thanks utaustin and thank you chips for adding this beautiful video. I’ve stopped watching award shows years ago (boring) so I had no idea this had even taken place. Looking back on him then is like looking at him now. Same great man. I feel so blessed having seen this and moreso now that he is our President. God bless him, his family, his administration, and us.
The tribiute was wonderful. Eloquent reading by Hill Harper (fine) Fantasia tow that song up ;o) and the then Senator now President looked and spoke true to who he is, Caring (he looked really really good too) Fine tribute, one of the better for the NAACP!
I never saw that video before. Fantasia was fab but Barak Obama has something even more out of this world. He is an amazing man and consistent if nothing else.
What a wonderful ‘find’!!!!! THANKS, UTALib, you are such a jewel in this family in so many ways! Apart from this video being a terrific reaffirmation of our President’s long view, it is IMO the short answer to this past week’s engineered kerfuffle by members of the CBC. For PBO, really caring about the AA community is not something that surfaces at convenient moments (as seems to be the case for some of these starved-for-media-notice types), but something he has LIVED quietly and consistently, and he has done this for YEARS at his own financial expense. Take that, you opportunistic AA presidential critics!!
ps. UTALib, I truly appreciate the way you use your talents to grow this family! You do fine and loving work my young friend, and I believe you will see the ‘reward’ come November 2012 and beyond.
pps. CHIPS, IS IT TIME YET FOR ANOTHER TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE? [I remember getting such a kick out of the trip which happened shortly after I was adopted into the family.] Our TOD family is probably ready for a time of communal laughter and joyous tears, not to mention soul-bursting PRIDE. Is it time yet? IS IT? IS IT? PRETTY PLEASE. With ice cream?
Thanks mille fois Chips, for the community you have created here, and for giving so many a ‘visible’ voice in our unfolding history!! I haven’t met you face to face but I feel almost as strongly about you as I feel about the President whom I also haven’t met. Enjoy your weekend!
Thanks for your kind words vcprezofan2. From your lips to God’s ears that we will indeed see the reward of our collective hardwork come November 2012 and beyond, when President Obama wins re-election, and continues to make this country shine like the beacon of hope, strength, prosperity, diversity, and inclusiveness that it is.
Hmm… Russ Feingold endorses President Obama in 2012
/// “In 2012, he says he’ll work for the reelection of President Barack Obama, but following the actions of Gov. Scott Walker, he says he also understands that “retaking the state governments from these corporate-backed operatives” must be a priority.” ///
Awesome. I have a hard time disliking Feingold. He’s made some votes that don’t match with the liberal hero label that’s given to him but he made a statement very early in Obama’s presidency that I will never forget. He remarked that he could not believe how many forces were coming together to make sure Obama fails. I’m paraphrasing ’cause I’m too lazy to find the quote but it was spot on. I don’t think a lot of people caught on at the time but they are seeing it now. I really appreciated that he acknowledged that – out loud.
Thank you so much utaustin for bringing the NAACP video here. Consistent and true and always working for the good of the people. I love the President. I wonder how many people in the audience envisioned him as the President in just three years. What a great time to be alive.
I’m about to watch that Glastonbury video now. Thank you again for that. I remember enjoying it so much when it was first put up on Youtube. It was wonderful to see the crowd reaction. Beyonce is a great supporter of the President. I will have to go on and watch the inaugural ball video after that.
The Teabaggers’ version of “We Will Rock You”
We Won’t Tax You
I’m a Se-na-tor make a big noise
On the Senate floor gonna make a big speech today
I’m gonna spoil some more brats
Save all the rats
Let the old folks eat food you feed cats
We won’t, we won’t tax you!
We won’t, we won’t tax you!
I’m a governor, took some fed cash
Now I will denounce all my stimulus funds today
I’m gonna say it was wrong
I knew all along
Then I’ll cash the check while changing my song
We won’t, we won’t tax you!
Sing it!
We won’t, we won’t tax you!
I’m a Congressman, know some fat cats
Paid for my campaign, now they want some payback today
Warning, “Don’t rock the boat.”
I got the note.
Better let them know they can count on my vote!
We won’t, we won’t tax you!
We won’t, we won’t tax you!
Sing it!
We won’t, we won’t tax you!
Hey hopefruit2, I read the Charles Blow NYT article and my goodness it is just annoying. He says President Obama has become the “Sustainer-In-Chief with an eerie inhumanity.” What??!!! What kind of insult is that? He tries to be subtle about it, but it screams loudly in black and white for all to see. He then said President Obama is robotic and compared him to the false natures and characters of Bachmann, Romney, and Perry. He said he’s disappointed that President Obama has turned out to be as false as them and he only repeats talking points like Bachmann who acts as though there is a string on her back that once pulled; only allows her to continuously repeat false GOP talking points. HE COMPARES PRESIDENT OBAMA TO BACHMANN, ROMNEY, AND PERRY!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me? The whole article is based on false, false, false, false premises. Frankly, it’s disgusting, filled with PL talking points and just plain annoying. The fact that he’s complaining when Fox News uses his article to attack and bash President Obama on a continuous loop today is so disingenuous and smells of a fake woe is me attitude. What did he expect? His article has just contributed to the MSM false talking point of “OMG President Obama is losing his base. The left is disappointed in him.” I fully expect all political news channels to cite his article all weekend and all monday (Oh crap Morning Joe) to continue peddling that false narrative. I’m going to keep tweeting him and calling him out for his lies and his false whining. His twitter handle is @CharlesMBlow.
That’s why I’m so disgusted with this Blow fellow. He insults the president – not simply criticizes him, and then turns around and pretends that he’s all upset at FOX NEWS when they engage in their usual assault.
What is your twitter handle UT? For some reason I don’t think I’m getting your tweets. Mine is @aspirational12
Hey ut, thank you so much for this video!!! you’re the best.
I just checked that, emoprog puma whatever he is, article…..what a piece of trash! I think he was jealous of Drew Westen’s disgusting article, praised by all the PL and angry left.
I just checked his tweeter feed, this is precious:
CharlesMBlow Charles M. Blow
Oh, here we go with the “Obama is losing the left” responses to my column. Pu-lease…
CharlesMBlow Charles M. Blow
There is a HUGE difference between those who want him to do better and those who want him to be undone…
CharlesMBlow Charles M. Blow
For all the ppl e-mailing me saying that you will sit out the next election bc u don’t want to vote for Obama (as If I agree): That’s STUPID
When your article is picked up by Fox to trash the President, you knew exactly what you were doing.
What a hypocrite!!!
They’re sick, jealous, hypocritical and cowards. Fox and Karl Rove don’t have to do anything!
The job of trashing the President is done daily by the so called ”supporters”…RIGHT!
Charles M. Blow @CharlesMBlow retweeted to 20,986 followers:
ChristiMtl ChristiMtl
@CharlesMBlow Karl Rove can get his inspiration for his next attack ad from your piece of trash. Just join the Tparty you hypocritical loser
That’s typical of these good-for-nothing blowhard columnists. Thin-skinned and bullying. They can dish it but they can’t take it. He has not been able to defend his own column with a single fact – yet he finds it appropriate to release his army of followers to attack you on Twitter.
THE PROFESSIONAL LEFT AND TP/REPUBS….TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN….
however their TREACHORY is greater…..because with the TP/REPUBS….you know what to expect….
with these so called PL folks…they Pretend that they are Progressive…yet the end result of the rant and ravings is to undermine the President….they use lies and distortions to attack the President….they attempt to cause confusion and doubt…..
this man has been on the damn $ for a long time now and has kept his word from healthcare;to foreign policy to Africa
his focus hasn’t shifted at all and neither has his priorities.
I have never seen this before so thank you UT and Chip
Sophie is one of my favorite actresses out there alongside Halle Berry;Kerry Washington;Viola Davis;Thandie Newton and Kimberly Elise from this current generation
While the President may be enjoying what many describe as a working vacation, a White House official says he did take time to buy precisely two books for himself yesterday during a visit to Vineyard favorite Bunch of Grapes bookstore with daughters Sasha and Malia.
Three more books were brought to the island from home.
The five books average 512 pages in length, and are predominantly fiction.
Whether or not Mr. Obama will have a chance to actually read them is another question altogether, but behold, the Presidential Summer Reading List:
1. “The Bayou Trilogy,” by Daniel Woodrell (496 pages) Crime novels featuring detective Rene Shade.
2. “Rodin’s Debutante,” by Ward Just (272 pages) A coming-of-age novel set against “the crude glamour of midcentury Chicago.”
3. “Cutting for Stone,” by Abraham Verghese (560 pages) A first novel telling the story of twin brothers “born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon.”
4. “To the End of the Land,” by David Grossman (592 pages) Fiction involving “a mother’s powerful meditation on war and family.”
5. “The Warmth of Other Suns,” by Isabel Wilkinson (640 pages) The lone non-fiction title tells of the migration of Black Southerners to Northern and Western cities in the mid-20th century.
Yup, and you can get them all on Amazon (or elsewhere) for an avg of $7-$14 each in Kindle or Paperback. Perhaps the prices will be raised slightly over the next few weeks if the demand increases.
“The Warmth of Other Suns” is an awesome book. I bought it after LOD interviewed Isabel Wilkinson, the author and Bill Russell who was part of the migration, earlier this year. Makes me feel just a little bit smarter knowing our President is reading from the same pages
During his recent state visit to Britain, the essence of Barack Obama was so eloquently encapsulated for me during his introduction by the speaker of the British parliament before the President addressed the joint body. I have watched that address a million times already and would encourage anyone who hasn’t or who needs to get inspired again to do so….maybe Chips may want to upload it for us sometime.
The last part of that introduction went like this:
“History is not the burden of any one man or woman alone, but some are called to meet a special share of it’s challenges. It is a duty that you discharge with a dignity, determination and distinction that are widely admired. Abraham Lincoln once observed that, nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character – give him power”.
Barack Obama was elected President at a time in America’s history when this test of character was sorely needed. He has discharged his duties as President and leader of the free world in an examplary manner. I will have no other captain at the helm of this ship of state in these turbulent times than PBO,especially seeing what the alternatives are.
For those of us who are wont to pull out hairs at all seemingly negative news, I say…Peace,be still!. This man swam the waters of Chicago politics, conquered the Clintonian political mountain and traversed the McCanian desert before he got to the WH.
The tea and firebaggers can rant and rave all they want – we know that empty vessels make the most noise. I don’t worry about the noise and the polls…..the ground game is what I focus on, and I love what I see on the ground. The American people have now seen them for what they are…and they will be left dancing naked in the market square come Nov.2012. To Chips and TOD family….keep up the good work you’re doing; every effort counts.
Let me put it bluntly…he’s not even at the half way mark yet in his 8 year tenure!.You can take that to the bank!
i believe as you to that the American People can see the ways and means of the TP/Repubs….but i also know the American people have short memories and are fickled….and often times vote against their best interests….so i do not take anything for granted…and i think neither does the President…
we must continue to debunk the lies….challenge the distortions…use the truth to give clarity….and always have hope…:)
Thanks Prettyfoot58…..I share your sentiments exactly. My piece wasn’t intended to underestimate or gloss over the potential damage the fickle minded can wrought in our elections. That is why I appreciate what Chips and all of you are doing on this blog. The rich and diverse information that one gathers on this site daily is indeed invaluable for the battles that we inevitably must engage in to win the war.
So nicely said,Uche.Thank you, and I agree. UtAustinLiberal…thank you so much for this video…tears came very unexpectedly while watching this.I am always touched by PBO’s humbleness, and intelligence and honesty. I can feel my heart well up with pride when he speaks, and today, for some reason, this brought tears to my eyes.Joyous tears:)
Just found a wonderful video filmed outside of Paul Ryan’s office – folks protesting as part of the American Dream Movement . Good quotes from protestors and then the Dem running against Ryan spoke.
Here is another good video – this protest was outside of Boehners office, great clip where a guy goes “they have been in office 9 months, where are the jobs bill?”
This excellent post from PoliticusUSA proves that “INFORMATION IS POWER” . We have pierced the media firewall. It has been compromised and the results are absolutely exhilarating. Across the country at town halls the American people are pushing back against the anti-government Republican Party and their radical agenda.
The MSM is getting hammered and called to account for their sloppy, negative and dishonest reporting. Chuck Todd, Jake Tapper, Mark Knoller, Tweety, Rachel Maddow, Mike Papantonio, and Ed Schultz can attest to that.
We have become an arm of the White House Communications Department. They need to update their org charts and add and entry for the pro President Obama blogs. The Republican Party, the MSM and the PL might as well get used to being accountable for the lies and distortions. We just won’t stand for it. Information is power.

An Angry and Battered America Demands Tax Increases On The Rich
It is refreshing and hopeful that finally, Americans are waking up and speaking out; it is too bad Republicans are deaf and have contempt for the voters and America. They deserve everything they are going to get and one can only hope that it is extremely painful for them.
Wha-wha-wha??? Holy crap. We’ve been the victim of too many rumors during the Libyan revolution, but I would like to think that Mr. Engle knows of what he speaks.
Nothing on BBC News or Al Jazeera yet. No offense to Mr. Engle, but his credibility is not the best in my estimation. Still, amazing news if true. And it was just a matter of time: the revolutionaries almost have Tripoli encircled, and I doubt that the bulk of the loyalist soldiers want to go down with the ship.
OK, my Libya twitter feeds are on fire. Rebels IN Tripoli, Gaddafi and two sons (but not Saif) fled, rebels in control of the military airbase just outside the capital. Trying not to get too excited, as rumor has been the currency of this revolution.
Isn’t Libyan TV controlled by the rebels? Psyops to get loyalist troops to defect, or at least sow confusion right before the battle for Tripoli seems more likely.
This is the worst case scenario though, because it means there will be no negotiated truce, which means loyalists will wage their own guerrilla warfare campaign when they’re pushed out for years to come.
The comments below from President Barack Obama and President Ronald Reagan show the stark contrast between Democrats and Republicans about the role of government. Democrats believe that government can and should play a positive and constructive role in the lives of the American people. The vehemently anti-government Republican Party believes that government itself is the problem. There is a systematic attempt to cripple and dismantle government and essentially render it useless. So why would anyone want the Republican Party running the government??
================================
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA said this on August 15, 2011 at the Cannon Falls, Minnesota town hall during the Rural America Economic Bus Tour:
You’ll hear a lot of folks, by the way, say that government is broken. Well, government and politics are two different things. Government is our troops who are fighting on our behalf in Afghanistan and Iraq. That’s government. (Applause.) Government are also those FEMA folks when there’s a flood or a drought or some emergency who come out and are helping people out. That’s government. Government is Social Security. Government are teachers in the classroom. (Applause.) Government are our firefighters and our police officers, and the folks who keep our water clean and our air clean to breathe, and our agricultural workers. And when you go to a national park, and those folks in the hats — that’s government.
So don’t be confused — as frustrated as you are about politics, don’t buy into this notion that somehow government is what’s holding us back. Now, too much government — if it’s oppressive and bureaucratic and it’s not listening to people and it’s not responsive to the needs of people and isn’t customer friendly — that’s a problem. And if you stand in line at some government office and nobody seems to be paying any attention to you, well, that needs to be fixed. And if somebody is trying to regulate a small business and they’re not paying attention to the realities of the small business, that’s a problem.
But don’t buy into this whole notion that somehow government doesn’t do us any good; government is what protects us. The government is what built the Interstate Highway System. Government is what sent a man to the Moon. It’s what invested in the research and development that created innovations all across this country. (Applause.)
==================================
PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN said this on January 20, 1981 at his First Inaugural Address:
“Government is not the solution to our problem. Government is the problem.”
PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN said this on July 28, 1988 at Future Farmers of America:
The ten most dangerous words in the English language are “Hi, I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.”
It always amazes me that people can wave the flag and try to destroy their own government at the same time. If the agents of a foreign country were to infiltrate and try to undermine confidence in the US government they could not do it more effectively than the Republicans have.
I’m thinking that some of the media now regularly scan Chipsticks & BWD’s blogs to retrieve material. Now the video with the Thunderpaws doggie reunion with master is on msn.com.
I don’t doubt it. lol and that is good. That would mean they also see the factual information about what this administration, the republicans, the CBC etc. and our disgust with what is passing as journalism these days. We deserve more.
Here’s a 1995 interview on importance of community organizing from our President, who still believes in civility, and the essential goodness of people.
You may know this, but I’ve seen from two sources that the three U.S. “hikers” in Iran have been convicted as spies. Both CNN and AJE have reported it.
Please let’s continue to send up good thoughts and pray for them.
Does anyone recall – wasn’t a pardon and release granted to somebody else convicted in Iran recently, under similar circumstances? Hope that happens in this case.
— WSY isn’t coming up properly, is it a Disqus problem? —
I’m watching last night’s opening Rachel segment, it is TERRIFIC. She has been the strongest supporter of our President in the MSM, I’ve frankly
wondered why some in the pragmatic community — which I’m admittedly new to, but I’ve been pragmatic on my own since, well, since November 2008 —are lumping here with the PL. If it took her some time to come around on LGBT issues, I can understand from her side and her detractors’, but it’s time to bury the hatchet and
SUPPORT HER SO SHE CAN SUPPORT US,
ESPECIALLY when Paul Krugman has come out as full tinfoil Leftbagger, calling 80% of Democratic voters the “crazies”.
I tweeted her some approval yesterday. She went overboard on the LGBT issue which is a very emotional one for her. She went too far and didn’t wait for the President to come through. I’m picking up through the grape vine that she’s back on the President’s team for now. I used to listen to her on the radio and liked her then. I started to follow her on twitter so I can voice my approval when she’s fighting the GOP and tweet my opinion when she turns on the President. With the election just around the corner I am getting tired of hearing people who should know better aiding the GOP. I know they have a right to an opinion but it’s time for “all hands on deck” to get the President re-elected. We can disagree and discuss to our hearts content afterward. Maybe by then some of the more impatient will have learned that if you want something good you sometimes have to wait and that the President is often working behind the scenes on the very things they are screaming for. The last thing we all want is to be trying to figure out how to mitigate the damage that any of the GOP candidates would inflict.
As someone who voted for, and has supported, our President from outside the usual supporter circles, her commentary on his eighteen-month point was a real I-Am-Not-Alone moment for me, and has been a touchstone I go back to, and repost, and have literally cried over, again and again.
I haven’t watched her from the beginning, but whenever I watch her she ALWAYS attacks the GOP and NEVER atacks our President; and she very frequently shows how good he is doing. In MSM terms, her level of support is incredible, and it is real, and it is — and has been — happening now.
I just came out of a literally week-long tussle with a Concern Troll who went on and on above how he “loves” “Barack” and ”Barack“ this and ”Barack” that. Watching the segment from yesterday that I posted above, it struck me that she ALWAYS says “the President” or “President Obama” (and to think that this is even an issue, yes, I know).
The PL never says “President” unless it is followed by “should”.
She is to us what the President is to everyone else: we need to start appreciating.
I am so glad to be reminded of the President’s introduction to Parliament. I got chills all over listening to that, and then listening to the President. Did not anyone on TV, any journalist, any senator, any representative, notice that he reset the entire foreigh policy for the U.S. and the world? Did they NOT listen? That was a world changing day, and we will see the results down the road. I have decided that usually people don’t truly LISTEN to him, they decide what he is GOING to say and comment on that. WE listen. That was a thrilling day. How can I find that speech?
Carolyn…I agree with your comment totally. You can find hte video @ whitehouse.gov…look for it in the video archives. I watched it again today and I felt a ‘tingle up my leg’, like Tweety!…lol. When you watch the reaction of world leaders and regular folk around the world towards our President and then compare that with the treatment he receives at home,…the biblical saying that a prophet is not recognized in his hometown comes to mind. It’s a real shame.
Am I correct in thinking that you are talking about PBO’s address to parliament in london, if so I think you can get the speech on you tube. Type in President Obama addresses Parliament London and comes up as “Obama’s UK parliament speech 2011″. Hope this has been helpful. It was an incredible speech. I had seen him the day before in London and I recorded the speech on DVR as I was in a meeting with my son’s school but watched it after. I was totally in awe of his intelligence and vision.

Assuming Gaddafi falls this weekend, what does this mean for Syria? No, NATO isn’t going to shift its operations east, but Turkey just might do something, with the blessing of its NATO allies. The Arab Spring has been in a holding pattern since Libya and Syria kicked off. Gaddafi’s fall might jumpstart it again.
Libya is key … it’s freedom sets in motion internal actions in Syria, Iran and Palestine … many other places will follow … China will become ever more threatened – from within – …. going to be an interesting decade, for sure …
Guys, I need some inspiration here please. I hope one of my TOD friends will reply.
Since Charles M. Blow retweeted my tweet to his 20,000 followers, I have many after me on twitter, defending him, I want to send a good one that would include good points because I would have a tendency to type ”just F***off”, but I don’t want to do that, I don’t want to let my emotions get the best of me, can someone help me please?
I will defend President Obama always. Sick of them all.
An exemple of one I just received.
Tweet: To Christi: If this is your way of supporting Obama, you’re doing a poor job. CWB: Excellent column, & don’t let the bastards get you down.
My tweet to Charles Blow was, copying it again here:
ChristiMtl ChristiMtl
@CharlesMBlow Karl Rove can get his inspiration for his next attack ad from your piece of trash. Just join the Tparty you hypocritical loser
I need one good tweet please! To reply with it, to all of them.
Christie you are doing a fine job of defending the President. I would ignore these “followers” and keep addressing Mr. Blow, since it was he who wrote the column and basically sent out the intitial tweet that his column was being exploited by FOX News.. I believe there is a way to block people on Twitter but I’m not sure.
Mr. Blow is a coward. He hasn’t addressed any of our objections to his column with substantive facts -instead he has his followers go after you and attack you. He can dish it but he can’t take it.
You should remind Mr. Blow that 1) He was the one who expressed outrage at being “misinterpreted” by FOX NEWS. If the facts are truly on his side, he should be able to independently refute your critique of his column without finding it necessary to draw up his army of followers to go after you.
Hey Christi, I’m with hopefruit2. If you begin replying to one rabid follower, you’ll have to reply to all rabid followers. You can block them. Anytime someone tweets you, on the right side is a box with a an image of a person. When you click on the downward facing arrow, it says for example block @janedoe or block and report @janedoe for spam. So when you block anyone and all of them, they can send you a tweet but it won’t appear in your @ mentions. The block button is pretty cool. Just keep tweeting @CharlesMBlow. He’s the one with the messed up article who keeps whining that Fox News is now using it to attack President Obama. Hypcorisy, thy name is Charles Blow.
Thank you guys, you are all freaking awesome!
I saw your tweet ut! Thank you mon amie!
I thought for a sec that I sent my tweet to Jane Hamsher, they all operate like that, have their followers attack people.
They can trash the President daily, anything goes, no limit but the n word but if people dare calling them out! watch out, cowards!
They want him out, they have no respect for the President, they hate him as much as the teabaggers do but they’re too hypocritical to say it. Or if they don’t hate him, they are so jealous of him, they must lose sleep over it.
Their BS excuse doesn’t hold water, it’s crap. Just holding his feet to the fire so he can be better.
Yes it’s like saying to someone: I want you to swim better but let me hold you under water with my freaking foot on your head first.
They are the left teabaggers for me and I will treat them as such.
Yep, ignore them. They try to over run you with numbers. One cannot take on many no matter how sound your argument might be. Pretend you don’t even know they exist. If you reply back they’ll know you’re reading your @mentions and will encourage them to engage with you more.
Maybe he needs a new prescription…or did he just not observe the President in the Midwest with his constituents.
When these arm chair critics are willing to put aside their expectations and preconceptions of how the job is to be done, they will begin to recognize and appreciate how it is being done and the positive inroads being made. Until then they should perhaps not speak of what they cannot see.
Vast difference between constructively criticizing the President and attacking him. Clearly Fox recognized the attack for what it was, since that fits their mo. Mr. Blow can object all he wants, but Fox would not waste their time on anything less than an attack on their arch nemesis. Mr. Blow’s rationalizing doesn’t change things, just means he is unwilling to admit what is being objected to. Maybe Mr. Blow’s buy’s Fox New’s Fair and Balanced mantra…..which seriously calls his judgement into question.
Mr. Blow fails in the constructive criticism category. And the right wing bomb throwers are happy to exploit his failings.
we have a heavy job to do. We simply cannot allow the haters to destroy and/or defeat President Obama!! Pushing back against the BO-haters on extreme left and and BO-haters on extreme right is a matter of global importance to me and it is definitely will determine the future course of the US. It is a fight we have to win for the sake of the present and especially for the sake of the future.
Just another black hypocrite who appears on Morning Joke and laughs with the bigots Pat Buchanan & Mark Halperin while they attack President Obama. They are so pathetic the way they just sit there when Joe tells them to stop talking the black ones always do. Blow fits him perfectly.
Can’t wait to enjoy this video!
Ha! That’s right, he was thinking of Mankini, Ghouliani, Parri, Palinti, flipflopiti-Romni, all the other ugli politicians of the GOP.
LOL!!! love the names. Hilarious.
Thanks. I never saw this before. What is so comforting is that all this time he has not changed. He is the same person then and now.
YES we CAN…because he always been ….who he is…..
Also note his great sense of humor back then. Cracks me up. He is as consistent as the sun rising in the east, setting in the west. Greatness personified.
Ofc not! If he doesn’t see it I sure do see a very handsome man in a black suit.
Great video, and thank you so much *Utah* thanks, very enjoyable
You’re very welcome luci1119. I’m thankful Chipsticks posted the video.
utaustinliberal, a question I’ve wanted to ask you for a long time — are you living in Utah or Texas? (Or neither?) It’s just nice to know of a fellow sufferer in Utah.
I think his/her id means University of Texas at Austin.
Hey JKS, PamfromCalif is right. I attend the University of Texas at Austin – Goooooooooo LONGHORNS!!!!!!!!! – So since I bleed burnt orange ( my school colors) and vote blue; hence the name utaustinliberal.
Awwww, you’re so precious. So glad we have you here, web buddy. You are truly special dear one.
Thank you so much Doris. That means a lot.
Thanks so much for bringing this video to us, ut. It’s an amazing flashback. All of it is so moving.
EXACTLY!!
Amen.
Ditto!
I watched this video three times. I thought I had just about seen everything President Obama has been in, but I had never seen this before. Thanks Utaustinliberal. We are blessed to have you here.
Thank you very much for your kind words Jackie. Right backatcha!
Yes thanks so much. I really enjoyed that and will watch it a zillion times I am sure. Never seen that one before!
I love Austin, TX…great town!
I’ve been to Austin and I’ve been to Dallas….hands down Austin is d’bomb!
Charming city, must be all the Democratic energy there.
Obama’.
YESSSSSSS
WOW – our President looked so young then! Both he and our First Lady looked fabulous
And his words are so consistent – he spoke of people not having health care!!
BRAVO.
This is just awesome. Too awesome for words.
To all the true themes in this mans life have always been the same to 1 Education, 2 Healthcare for all ,and most of all unity of purpose.
He stays true to his North Star. His sincere commitment to his values shines through as we travel back in time, year after year – to people from all walks of life, to health care, to education, to families, to honest community. His heart is huge and his determination is pure inspiration. LOVE.
Who was trying to determine the ‘Obama Doctrine’ recently? Maybe they need to have this illuminate their search, since what he has done so far hasn’t?
I am moved, beyond words….thanks for sharing this, I have never seen it before. He is genuine, consistent and true.
A godsend.
You’re very welcome Chipsticks
Since we’re all bathing in President Obama love, I think this tribute by Beyonce at the 2011 Glastonbury Festival was beautiful.
Thanks so much MTmarilyn. The TOD community is a GREAT family indeed.
But thanks for your wonderful words about Potus and for sure he projects the same to us and blesses us all.
cosign
(OMG if he had been I would have had to have been there!! lol)
Beautiful, snoopy, and you just may be right, though some would call us looney for saying so
Never saw this one before, and really needed it right now. Thanks so much.
Hi BWD!
We miss you….hope you are taking good care of yourself!
Also I see why they gave him the Nobel Peace Prize his first year in office. The Nobel Committee knew the values in our President were true and real. The ideas just follow from our President with ease and deep feeling that the whole world sees. That is why the lug heads try so hard to degrade him and can’t win.
Haha, I always thought he should have the prize just for putting up with the hate and stupidity directed at him daily. He’s a trooper.
Thank you so much UTAUSTINLIBERAL…you rock!!!…Wow…What a way to wake up:-)
Watching The MAN Blessed by GOD…only fitting that he bears the name BARACK…because in my eyes GOD never makes mistakes!!
What a gift he’s given us…I am filled with emotions….can’t help it…more kleenex (blaming it all on you Uta) love you
Love ya right back Kasai
I do not recall seeing this before. Thank you.
BTW, if any of you haven’t read Dreams from My Father, I highly recommend it. Or better yet, get the audiobook and listen to PBO reading it!
Ms Chips if you would…could you repost that video…..it truly bears viewing again…..
i hope that everyone has a fantastic day….
Thank you UT. I appreciate this!
(not buying yet, just window shopping
)
He’s another one who gets invited on the cable shows, like Morning Joe, because he is always more than willing to criticize Obama. They’re using their criticism of Obama as a career stepping stone. It’s pretty disgusting that Blow and others who do the same have no regard for the damage they do.
BWD – Sorta know what you mean, but I’ll never really get used to all pundits slashing PBO. It’s just too surreal for words.
Hahahah!!!! This is my fav tweet of the day….:-) love it
Tweeted by AngryBlackWoman
#You make a mistake and judge a man by his race; you go through life with egg on your face.#
I love this man more and more everyday. May God bless him and his beautiful family.
DITTOOOOO …kari
Hmm… Russ Feingold endorses President Obama in 2012
/// “In 2012, he says he’ll work for the reelection of President Barack Obama, but following the actions of Gov. Scott Walker, he says he also understands that “retaking the state governments from these corporate-backed operatives” must be a priority.” ///
http://iowaindependent.com/60363/russ-feingold-out-for-2012-elections
And thus another PL hero becomes an O-loving corporatist traitor against true progressive values. Excuse me while I go roll on the floor laughing.
I’m doing the same. ROFLMAO!!!
Feingold is a traitor and and OBOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Somewhere jane hamster is crying.
I’m in (both laughing on the floor and getting this great prez re-elected)
LL – Move over on that floor.
could not get the link….
Not sure why the link is not working but I’ll try again here.
http://iowaindependent.com/60363/russ-feingold-out-for-2012-elections
If it still doesn’t work maybe you should go directly to the site instead of clicking from the link.

What are the Twitterati tweeting?
That is so funny….and SO TRUE OF THE GOteaP
Yes I’m following you already..nevermind about the handle!
Jealousy is the closest thing to the grave.
Hear, Hear.
GOOD. Let him feel the heat. Thanks Christi.
These are two tweets I sent to the illustrious Charles Blow.
@CharlesMBlow Why would Fox need to write negative tag lines, when the left has been willingly writing them for them.
@CharlesMBlow after 2012 the PL are going to have some serious fence mending to do with the True Base of the party bc we won’t forget
Oh, I’m loving your “true base of the party” and “we won’t forget.” Thank you, thank you!
Here’s my question for the whiny PL that are never satisfied with anything President Obama does….
Who would you like to pick the next supreme court justice to join Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan???
President Obama or one of the unhinged and extreme GOP presidential candidates?
I rest my case.
Hey guys, Charles M. Blow just retweeted my tweet

Ok great, now I have his ”fans” after me on twitter lol.
Crazy.
That’s typical of these good-for-nothing blowhard columnists. Thin-skinned and bullying. They can dish it but they can’t take it. He has not been able to defend his own column with a single fact – yet he finds it appropriate to release his army of followers to attack you on Twitter.
I WILL SAY IT AGAIN….
THE PROFESSIONAL LEFT AND TP/REPUBS….TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN….
however their TREACHORY is greater…..because with the TP/REPUBS….you know what to expect….
with these so called PL folks…they Pretend that they are Progressive…yet the end result of the rant and ravings is to undermine the President….they use lies and distortions to attack the President….they attempt to cause confusion and doubt…..
alot like the Trojan Horse…….
this man has been on the damn $ for a long time now and has kept his word from healthcare;to foreign policy to Africa
his focus hasn’t shifted at all and neither has his priorities.
I have never seen this before so thank you UT and Chip

Hey guys, check out President Obama’s summer reading list. #ReadingRules #BooksRock #EducationRocks.
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20094994-503544.html
President Obama’s summer reading list
And for a vacay stalking update—–Barack and Michelle have not left the home today, Malia and Sasha went to an agricultural fair this afternoon.
And Mitt Romney continues his stalking expedition with his khaki pants and spy glasses…
“The Warmth of Other Suns” is an awesome book. I bought it after LOD interviewed Isabel Wilkinson, the author and Bill Russell who was part of the migration, earlier this year. Makes me feel just a little bit smarter knowing our President is reading from the same pages
Thank you utaustin and chipsticks for posting these videos.
Barack Obama quoting Abraham Lincoln.
I’m set for the day! They are my two favorite Presidents.
Thank you for reminding us of this brilliant address.
Oh, and once I got past the Lincoln quote, I went back and re-read what you wrote, which was also BRILLIANT!
Thanks JO….you’re too kind.
Hey, have you ever seen this clip? It is (Senator) Obama quoting Lincoln as part of the musical composition “Lincoln Portrait” by Aaron Copland.:
^^^Too bad this clip is so short.
What a beautiful testimony….UCHE…
i believe as you to that the American People can see the ways and means of the TP/Repubs….but i also know the American people have short memories and are fickled….and often times vote against their best interests….so i do not take anything for granted…and i think neither does the President…
we must continue to debunk the lies….challenge the distortions…use the truth to give clarity….and always have hope…:)
Absolutely spot on Uche; thank you…
So nicely said,Uche.Thank you, and I agree.
I loved that Parliament introduction and Obama’s speech there. It was a very moving day and confirmed the high regard for Obama across the pond.
Just found a wonderful video filmed outside of Paul Ryan’s office – folks protesting as part of the American Dream Movement . Good quotes from protestors and then the Dem running against Ryan spoke.
Protests in Paul Ryan’s district – Save the American Dream

I would encourage you to get involved in the American Dream movement, find an action near you, and show up.
I read somewhere that he had those protesters arrested. Anyone else see that?
yes it’s on ThinkProgress.com
Thanks,Fred…I’m NOT crazy:) I hope all this crazy comes up and bites them ALL in their collective asses come 2012.In a HUGE WAY!

Richard Engle/ MSNBC just tweeted: Libyan TV has reported that Qaddafi has fled his two sons.
Where is bobfr? He would have a better idea than Engle.
AJE’s breaking news is a new NATO bombing run on Tripoli being met with AA fire, according to Reuters. Let me go check my Libya Twitter feeds.
OK, my Libya twitter feeds are on fire. Rebels IN Tripoli, Gaddafi and two sons (but not Saif) fled, rebels in control of the military airbase just outside the capital. Trying not to get too excited, as rumor has been the currency of this revolution.
Yes, let’s try to keep calm while we hope for the best.
I thought Gaddafi said he was staying to fight to the death. I guess not. Hope these stories are true.
================================
(Applause.)
==================================
==================================
It always amazes me that people can wave the flag and try to destroy their own government at the same time. If the agents of a foreign country were to infiltrate and try to undermine confidence in the US government they could not do it more effectively than the Republicans have.
Absolutely spot on WoS…
I’m thinking that some of the media now regularly scan Chipsticks & BWD’s blogs to retrieve material. Now the video with the Thunderpaws doggie reunion with master is on msn.com.
I don’t doubt it. lol and that is good. That would mean they also see the factual information about what this administration, the republicans, the CBC etc. and our disgust with what is passing as journalism these days. We deserve more.
I think they also scanned BWD site, hence the frequently used tag line “The Only Adult In the Room”.
Yes
I do not know if this has been posted, but President Obama has an interview tomorrow on cbs news sunday morning.
Thanks, elaine. Off to set the DVR!
Thanks for the heads up elaine. I will be setting my DVR too.

I saw that too Jacqueline, 8years…
I don’t know how it will all play out, but they will ultimately be released. They are at the moment only being used as pawns by the Iranian govt..
My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to them and their families…
Yes, their female companion was released.
Hello, everyone! CJ from WSY here –
— WSY isn’t coming up properly, is it a Disqus problem?

BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA II
Forty-Fourth President of the United States of America
¡SÍ, DE PUEDE!
¡QUE VIVA LA REVOLUCION!
“ The last time any President did this much in office, booze was illegal. ”
Dr. Rachel Maddow (D. Phil., Oxford)
http://politicalwire.com/archives/2010/6/28/political_wire_on_the_rachel_maddow_show.html#035757a
I haven’t watched her from the beginning, but whenever I watch her she ALWAYS attacks the GOP and NEVER atacks our President; and she very frequently shows how good he is doing.
Maddow does some great work Christopher, I have a lot of time for her, but to claim that she “NEVER atacks our President” is simply untrue.
And sometimes she’s depressingly dishonest:
http://theobamadiary.com/2011/06/25/president-obama-is-against-what-just-happened/

Thanks ut. I’ve been enjoying your tweets. They are on point!
…it’s like saying to someone: I want you to swim better but let me hold you under water with my freaking foot on your head first…
Absolutely spot on Christi…
Hey Christi, I’ve been tweeting Charles Blow. If you want to use any of my tweets you’re free to.
Just check my twitter page.
Just tell them:
Destroying PBO by providing false fodder for Rove gets you what reward in 2012?

THIS. GO zizi.
Their idea of constructive criticism is simply non-stop verbal abuse…
Yeah, PBO is on vacation. *snort*

you made me choke on my steak LL
we have a heavy job to do.
President Obama is attending in Oak Bluffs at home of Professor Charles Ogletree.

Thank you for the video Anonymous. President Obama is such a phenomenal man!
And that NAACP video is so inspiring! My pores just raised throughout the entire video.
Just another black hypocrite who appears on Morning Joke and laughs with the bigots Pat Buchanan & Mark Halperin while they attack President Obama. They are so pathetic the way they just sit there when Joe tells them to stop talking the black ones always do. Blow fits him perfectly.
Awww this brought me to tears. I love it! Thanks utaustinliberal! By the way, go Longhorns!!! whoop whoop!
