Boston Globe: ….. Earlier, Morgan Freeman played a round at Vineyard Golf Club, and spoke briefly with President Obama.
“What I wanted to tell him is to get pissed off, get fighting mad,” the actor said. “But I know he won’t because he doesn’t think it’s politically smart.”
Asked about Obama’s prospects for a second term, Freeman paused. “If I could vote for him 1,000 times, I would,” he said. “I think he’s been horribly sandbagged, and it makes me so angry.”
Amen, Morgan (you old freaky-deak, you)!
Morgan, Thank you so much. I have always been a fan of his, now my faith in him is solid.
”If I could vote for him 1,000 times, I would..” Me too Mr. Freeman!
Me two ZeeUK. 1000 times and then more.
Always loved Morgan Freeman. Brilliant actor. Love him even more for this statement.
Concur….thanks for speaking out Mr. Freeman. Your anger is righteous and shared.
Thank you Morgan Freeman, and I am glad that you understand that you need to “Let Obama be Obama”.
Right, COS! And I’m satisfied with that final product!
Everyone has advice for this president.
I don’t remember Bush being told what he should and should not do at every turn.
What is surprising is he didn’t offer a prediction on PBO’s re-election. He did not answer the question.
Maybe he thought the questions was “would you vote for him again?” or “does he deserve reelection?”
He may have but the Boston Globe did not report it. Remember this is as reported by the Globe. And the media tends to slant things to push a certain narrative. I would have loved to see actually (unedited) video footage or full transcript of that interview.
Forgive me if I am wrong, but it sounds like Mr. Freeman was pondering IF he could give him advice, not that he actually did. I know sometimes I sit here thinking, “why don’t you tell those GOP idiots to blankity blank”? All the while, I know the president would never talk that way because it’s just not in him yell at people (he’s said it so many times) and he knows more about the situation than I do. I think Mr. Freeman was feeling so angry (as he ) frustrated like we all do. Just my thoughts.
Agree. I love Morgan Freeman and possibly he is being misreported but I can’t fathom why people seem to think the President should get pissed off. About what? and Why on earth for? How does a leader getting angry help him govern better? Where did this juvenile wisdom come from all of a sudden? I don’t recall GWB getting mad and pissed off. He was just too bloody minded for that kind of losing strategy. He just recklessly did what he wanted to do. Now Obama must get mad because it will help him how exactly? He has done a lot enacting the biggest legislative trove of any administration for 60 years. It is not enough because he didn’t get angry?
These guys are getting me mad now! okay when Denzel Washington got the honorary PhD he had the sense and modesty to state that he didn’t deserve it as he is hardly a man of letters so I understand that my hero Morgan is not in fact an intellectual and so I forgive him for going with the media noise without addressing himself as to why this President is supposed to get angry when this was not demanded of any other President. Clinton got angry because he has a bad short temper and even can beat up a person. but none of us liked that or wanted it in him. He was also involved with an intern and lied. We all forgave him and supported him when the gop tried to impeach him. But we never thought about why a guy like Clinton could get away with all those craven weaknesses. But we black people know that no black dude can get away with those kinds of Clinton weaknesses without getting himself strung up. Well apparently not all we black dudes know that. My Hero Morgan doesn’t apparently. Why do I feel so angry? He probably thought that it was the received wisdom that Obama must get angry and then the GOP will just cower and whine and leave him alone? What croc! Hasn’t it occurred to him that Obama getting angry is exactly what the racists want? But even Morgan knows that there is absolutely no danger of Barack Obama getting mad, he just doesn’t roll that way.
We are the ones who should be and are getting angry. We are the ones who have President Obama’s back.
Hail to the Chief! Hail, he is the Chief!!!
FINALLY! Someone who realizes that he’s NOT on the President’s Advisory Council.
If POTUS got ‘fighting mad’ for the teevee.. that would be the story.. not the issues, not the things he’s trying so hard to accomplish for all of us. I believe he is angry, I believe he fights every step of the way on the path he’s setting for this country.. I believe there is every kind of storm, obstacle and hazard pressing in to knock him off that path… and shooting off his mouth to release a steam of anger to fill our human need for wrath or righteousness- would only further the obstacles placed before him. WE NEED to BE FIGHTING MAD.. We need to clear the path for this leader we elected.. WE need to shoot off our mouths.. We need to be kicking obstacles outta his way.
I too have always been a fan of Mr. Freeman…and thank him for his support of the greatest President I believe this country has ever seen- may well ever see. I’m also glad that Mr. Eastwood’s politics haven’t rubbed off on him
Right On Sheri.
I too have always loved Morgan Freeman. We need more people speaking up for Obama like this.
“…We need more people speaking up for Obama like this.”
Yes WE do!
With the GOP already coming out against any Obama Jobs Plan, I think a fiery prime time address might be warranted. Wall St is going hard for Romney in donations, President Obama should consider going hard populist.
I will give the same advice I offered Spike Lee – Get pissed off; fighting mad yourself and do something. You’re a huge star with millions of dollars in your bank account. Republicans rip-off your voice for campaign ads for a reason – you’re seen as a trustworthy guy. Use that to spread the truth far and wide.
I respectfully disagree. Glenn Beck did the populist shtick, and he got canned from Fox News.
President Obama is doing well enough without being the angry black guy. If you want angry black men, look at Hermain Cain, Cornell West, and Tavis Smiley… all making themselves look foolish.
President Obama needs to be himself, period.
I may be wrong here, but I interpreted StR’s advice to be directed at Morgan Freeman, not President Obama. It was Freeman’s voice that was used by the GOP in robocall ads. Freeman has a very authoritative ring to his voice & style of speech, and he could accomplish a lot on PBO’s behalf he joined the grassroots campaign against the GOP.
Second paragraph was at Freeman, first about President Obama.
You can be populist without being angry.
Ideally the supposed fighters in Congress would get fired up and take on the GOP. Where are the Liberal Lions? – Too busy attacking President Obama. President Obama is one man taking on the whole GOP party, and the MSM by himself it seems all too often – and then he gets stabbed in the back by his own party.
I agree with you. WE are the ones who are supposed to be angry at our local legislators who serve in Congress. Look at what we gave him to work with. So, let’s get angry by being proactive.
“….WE are the ones who are supposed to be angry at our local legislators who serve in Congress. Look at what we gave him to work with. So, let’s get angry by being proactive.”
Amen to that…
WHATISWORKING’S ‘CONTACT ELECTED OFFICIALS’ LIST… http://www.whatisworking.com/2011/05/contact-congress-address-phone-twitter.html
Your state legislators (state Representative/state Senator), your mayor, your governor, et al, anyone?
I have been telling ya’ll from the “jump street” that Romney will be the GOP nominee. They are all un-presidential in the GOP field, but Romney is the most moderate per say and he is so damn flip/floppy with no forced accountability from the MSM or his GOP opponents he will get away with a run away nomination with Wall St millions to boot. Now it is our responibility not to allow him to run away with the General election. Obama/Biden 2012
I’m still worried about Perry. You’re not? Of course I’m always worried when someone new comes into the race.
Something funny I heard earlier today: Jennifer Donohue, a Republican strategist, said on MSNBC that this time Republicans get it, and they are going to nomine the ‘heart and soul of the Republican party, Rick Perry.’
The ‘heart and soul of the Republican party’. Just get your brain around that for a moment.
So do you believe Rick Perry’s extreme Rightwing agenda will attract independents? Do you believe he can win a Gerneral election vs PBO? hmmm…………….
Why do they always want him to be somebody he is not ?
“Why do they always want him to be somebody he is not ?”
Probably because he is the world’s power, ( which they don’t own, and would love to have same) so they project their desires onto him, to carry out. Problem is, they don’t keep in mind his position. I swear, so many people personalize their association and/or support of PBO so much that they forget his supreme position……the President of the United States…..which is more than your dawg, your man, your ace .
Eggzackly edp4bho.. he ain’t our dawg or our ace.. He is The President of The United States.. he ain’t just playing one on tv.
you just do not understand how the black community feels about the President….how connected we feel…
i have tried to explain it…..maybe you just can’t see it…
I think you are wrong. That is who he is. PO is a fighter, he does get pissed off but his anger is focused into action and he keeps his eyes on the long game. The man is shrewd. He thrives in the negative energy and somehow channels it into solutions. He is the type of person you don’t want to cross. He will wait you out, will let you say what you want, will keep his tone and voice neutral and even cordial. . . then he will CRUSH you.
That is what is so scary. He is the type of person who will wait you out and when you least expect it . . it’s over.
Ha! Remember the fly who tried to invade his space during an interview at the White House. Splat!
But I don’t find it scary. I find it … er … (I’ll keep my thoughts about his old-fashioned masculinity to myself, here).
“(I’ll keep my thoughts about his old-fashioned masculinity to myself, here).”
lol Jacquelineoboomer llololol too funny
Thing is, you don’t to cross PO. You just don’t. That is why the “weak”, “cave”, “man up” comments are so ridiculous. The man does not need protection. The man has a spine of steel and if crossed, will look you in the face as you are being destroyed. I don’t see how folks can miss it.
and the fly incident – that was the real PO.
That action was based on raw instinct. PO does not play.
PBO will be fighting in his own way when the campaign starts up. I love Morgan Freeman and I am glad he knows “the angry black man” isn’t politically smart. It’s great to have some one come out and say the treatment of PBO makes him angry.
yup. love Morgan too and I’m glad he made no bones about his support. (it’s me Lisa).
Right on all counts.
Funny how President Obama beat the Chicago political machine, the Clinton machine, the McCain whatever machine, got health care reform passed although nobody else could, 50 million other things in between, took down Osama bin Laden, inspired people in the Middle East and Africa to take down their dictators … but he hasn’t learned how to fight yet.
No, the schoolyard bullies haven’t figured out a way to knock him down yet … that’s the real truth.
I know, right? He did all of these things, and continues to get stuff done….and all we hear is that he’s weak.
Weak? My @$$. The man’s got a titanium spine, as far as I’m concerned. He’s not above honest criticism, but so far, any complaints I have about him are minor.
And also, I could not handle the duties of the Presidency. He can, and he has.
I think it helped that the McCain machine was powered by an old Tin Lizzie engine but your point is taken. His is a quietly determined strength and power. I think Mr. Freeman said what Spike Lee was trying to say but better. And he was asked because not only has he played the president in a movie, he also was G*d!
I would do the same as Freeman, vote for him 1,000 times if I could.
Well, Betsy, then we’d have to form two lines at the polling place, because I’d be right beside you voting for him 1,000 times.
Try three lines. I would be putting my 1,000 votes in.
Morgan Freeman in Glory. I was his forever.
Funny how ThinkProgress only tweeted the first part of Freeman’s quote…that’s why I didn’t click on their link…glad to see the whole quote here.
Yep, more sensationalism. Food of the gotcha gods !
PBO previously stated that he drives Michelle crazy because even whey they have a disagreement he maintains his composure and even temperament. That’s just his personality. Never gets too high or too low. I think Mr. Freeman is just expressing his frustration with watching PBO get slammed at every turn by the MSM, teabaggers, firebaggers and Waters-Smiley-West-baggers. Also think that his comments may have been edited for targeted consumption.
On the even temperament note … it’s called maturity, something I think Barack Obama had even as a very, very young man. Something that others never reach in their whole lives.
Also, it’s much, much harder to maintain the cool. It’s so much easier to flip out, to run around screaming and waving the hands in the air like a lunatic.
Calm and control is hard to do. I’ll give it to the President–he’s definitely got the cool head.
Marc – I agree so much. It’s laudable in him. How come we all understand this (even as we all try to deal with people in our own lives), and the opinionators we’re stuck with can’t quite grasp the concept … I’ll never figure that out.
Marc, he’s just one cool “dude”. CoolDude PBO, !
President Obama is head and shoulders above all the rest!!!
He is grace, dignity and discipline personified!!! But he is no fool and that is the mistake many who tend to underestimate him make!!!
Dignity and a calm head under attack and pressure is a FEAT very few humans could muster and he shows with ACTIONS what it means to LEAD with grace, integrity, laser-focus calm and brilliance!!! Barack Obama RULES!!!
Rock on President Obama. ROCK ON Sir!!!
Thanks Mr. Freeman for speaking up when others have stood silently by and watched the sandbagging of a man who would do GREAT things for our country and who will be remembered as one of the GREATEST presidents EVER!!!
Well stated Eleroy. Morgan Freeman has his back and always has.
I’d say Michelle was mature too. She just expresses herself differently. He reminds me of everyone I know who was raised by older parents/grandparents. It’s a different vibe.
Just received this and was surprised. How appropriate it is.
i hope it comes through for everyone. Enjoy the rest of your day.
Someone needs to send this to Rachel Maddow. This slick guy selling “isms” is definately the Koch brothers/Grover Norquest and the like.
Good idea. I’ll try but don’t know her e-mail or tweet.
MAKE THAT ’1001′ FROM HERE!
May I gloat? I actually met Morgan at the B’day party of a friend a few years ago. I danced with him also…to “Golddigger!” LOL! He seems to really enjoy a party!
It’s WONDERFUL to have him come out so strongly in support of President Obama and something tells me more “public” people will be folllowing his lead!
That’s something to tell your grandiose, Dakota. Sounds like fun.
A little OT. I ventured over to HuffPo trying to find an audio or video of PBO’s speech on Libya, and I saw Savannah Guthrie’s photo and the headline said “Is she the next Tim Russert” ? They were commenting on how she was such a strong fill in for Gregory, and the tough questions she asked Gibbs and Daniels on Meet The Press Sunday. Apparently, they consider asking Gibbs a question about the “weird” comments from these unknown made-up Obama advisers tough. Goes to show, how low the MSM bar is set these days.
How dare they insult the intelligence and memory of Tim Russert. These people have no class at all.
I wrote Norah she needed to ask substantive questions, that her questions were weak and gave womenr eporters a bad name. I thought she was stupid. Notice that the headline writers on Huffpo must be Junior high.
That what I would say my self . Thanks .morgan . Needs to put fot down.
i couldn’t agree with you more mr freeman. barack obama is one of the most intelligent presidents we have ever had running this country. i don’t think it is in his nature to get angry, super angry. i would vote for him 1,000 times as well. after his second term i will vote for his wife michelle!!!!
With each passing day I realize the strength and power of President Obama. I have faith that he will reap the benefits of all the good he is trying to accomplish. He is steady and powerful and he wil keep fighting until he gets to the bottom of most issues. He is treated with such disrespect by so many but he keeps moving on with determination and focus. He is the lion spoken of in the African epic Sundiata and he will continue to work for the people with the same vigor. I would vote for him 2000 times if I could. We must continue to fight for him to ensure another four years.
