And it’s not because she didn’t know the answer. She just didn’t want to say it. Rachel has already invested herself in the narrative that President Obama is a mediocre and will get only re-elected only because the Repblican alternative is so poor, not because he has accomplished anything of substance or has any good policy ideas, etc..
She may try to run that narrative except that she’s on video lauding the merits of his successes, on more than one occasion, even when no one else was. Rachel knows she’s caught between a rock and a hard place regarding her support for PBO. She brought it all on herself, and PBO didn’t have to lift a finger to bury any of these fickle minds.
Seems to me she answered just the question that Dave asked……”where would we be if Grumpy and Dippy were in charge? “. I don’t think that at this time we can expect wishy washy people to defend President Obama, so atleast she didn’t bash him. It’s the best we can hope for from msm, and I don’t forget Dave’s joke last year about PBO being a one-termer. They can all eat dust !
I wasn’t stunned by Rachel at all. She rubs me the wrong way, I’ll admit that.. but her inability to say anything in regards to a President McCain other than to bring in Palin was rather pathetic for someone who everyone pumps up as being “brilliant”. I guess she thinks McCain would have ended DADT… even though he wouldn’t have, or provided Healthcare, or fought to prevent Soc Sec and Medicare from being cut by his fellow insane republicans. She had an opportunity to show her vast array of knowledge and came up with… Palin.
There is no answer to that question. We are not bad off now, except for the hole Bush put us in economically and with employment. I think bringing up Palin was a stroke of smarts. THINK about that!!!! If we stick with Obama and push Congress, our situation will be much better a year from now. Think about what the international scene would be if McCain had been elected!!!! OUCH!
David Letterman asks the most obvious question that everyone avoids. That was a thing a beauty. Rachel Maddow practically speechless. Nicely done Dave.
It will be interesting to see what Jon says about Libya when he gets back from vacation. Big things always seem to happen when he and Bill Maher are on hiatus.
I understood Rachel’s response as; we already know how McCain would have been; terrible. But at least we would have Sarah P to whip us all in line with her one liners and folksy stuff (hopey and changy, lip stick on a pig, don’t run reloady- all those great stuff)
So in Rachel’s defense I thing her response was a thing of beauty
Really, I didn’t see anything wrong with her answer either, Her answer was rewarding really. Just the thought of Palin not being VP, made me smile showing all thirty-two
A blast from the past. Senator Barack Obama being interviewed by David Letterman. His consistency is just remarkable. More evidence that some folks just didn’t pay attention to what he was saying.
David Letterman: “That’s an electable suit. I would vote for that suit. It’s a good looking suit.”
Senator Barack Obama on David Letterman Show (April 2007)
Rachael Maddow’s first response to this should have been something like -the people complaining and saying those things are Republicans who can’t give Pres Obama credit for all the things he has accomplished and list a good few of them.
I’m sorry but I don’t think she did well here. The Sarah Palin comment was like he’s bad but she would be worse.
Not impressed with Rachael lately.
A second comment about my upthread comment….when Letterman asked her that question, Rachel’s expression was total shock, as in “OH my what would it be like? I haven’t thought of that before.” With one sentence she summed up McCain’s horrible judgment and the danger of his being elected. I think the question rocked her back on her heels. I hope she thinks about that today, in fact I hope all the raging left start thinking about that question. And, we all know if he had been elected, we would be in a ground war in Libya right now. His poor judgment was totally exemplified in his selection of Sarah Palin.
Rachel’s non-answer was very telling and even Dave noticed it. She is art of the PL crowd always yelling that President Obama never does enough. I guess she had forgottent that under John McCain we’d be more a third world country
The second video just reinforced how appreciative I am that President Obama is the Commander-In-Chief at this time. He is 100% consistent any day any time. In the video he talked about America not going it alone or blindly but building a coalition and using smart diplomacy and that’s exactly what we’ve been doing.
“I guess she had forgotten that under John McCain we’d be more a third world country ”
I think that was Maddow’s point. She can be a pain but on more than a few occasions she has praised the President. I may disagree on some of her criticisms but that’s part of her job.
I think all those who are complaining about President Obama better wake up and ask themselves these kind of questions. Do you think you would be better off if there was a President John McCain and Vice President Sarah Palin? Democrats, Progressives, you might not have gotten everything you wanted, things might not be were you want them to be, but President Obama is a hell of alot better than any of those Tea Republicans. And put folks in Congress and the Senate who will work with him, I believe things will get alot better for the middle class and poor.
This country, the poor and middle class can not survive a President Romney, Bachmann, Perry, or any of those right wingnuts, who bow down to Rush Limbaugh.
Anniebella, don’t forget that folks like Rachel Maddow and the rest of the PL would not personally fare all that worse under a Republican presidency. The PL are for the most part affluent, even those who are racial minorities like Cornel West. So it’s easy for them to sit in their Ivory towers and talk about this and that, but the rest of us middle- and lower class folks know which presidency is working for us, and we will vote accordingly in 2012.
Rachel could have mentioned Palin, got her laughs and then said seriously and ticked off all the amazing things the President has achieved. She didn’t because she’s a smug PL who thinks she knows it all. I have stopped watching all of them except for Rev Al. And, you, know, I don’t miss any of them. If I need to catch a clip, I pick it up here or elsewhere. But I refuse to give her ratings.
She has been terribly unfair to President Obama and I will not forgive that.
Now proudofobama, that is what I said when I heard her answer. Rachel is very smart. She knows a joke show from joke/let me put it in reality as well since we are here. Plain and simple for me. I do not give her my ratings because of the same type(IMO) of situation that caused me to let her go for now in my iife. She knew what the vote in NY meant, and as well she knew what POB had done on those issues and will continue to do. But she lied on him at that very moment when she could have said what is truth. That is the shamefulness for RM for me.
I was focused more on the question than her answer. I think the question was a thing of beauty. Haven’t heard anyone else phrase a question anywhere close to the way Letterman phrased that one.
Thank you for your comments Claire. Yes, he makes me proud of him everyday that I am alive. And nothing RM says will ever diminish who President Barack H. Obama is or will be. That is the question and the answer. Amen.HZ
I was stunned when Rachel did not have a valid answer for the question.
And it’s not because she didn’t know the answer. She just didn’t want to say it. Rachel has already invested herself in the narrative that President Obama is a mediocre and will get only re-elected only because the Repblican alternative is so poor, not because he has accomplished anything of substance or has any good policy ideas, etc..

let’s see…..
Somali pirates.
Osama Bin Laden
Egypt.
Libya.
I’ll take that kind of mediocrity EVERY FUCKING DAY, kthx bai.
Health Care!!! 8) A BIG FUCKING DEAL!! 8)

I agree with that. Letterman fed her a straight line and she hammered it. The audience seemed to get the point.
David Letterman asks the most obvious question that everyone avoids. That was a thing a beauty. Rachel Maddow practically speechless. Nicely done Dave.
Not gonna click. Maddow is on my sheit list now like most of the other talking bobble heads.
It’s a joke show. Her answer was funny IMO.
You would be surprised how much influence these joke shows have on the electorate; John Stewart is a prime example.
It will be interesting to see what Jon says about Libya when he gets back from vacation. Big things always seem to happen when he and Bill Maher are on hiatus.
I know that. And yet, this was a good answer to the question she was asked.
Is that you BWD? Want to make sure someone hasn’t nicked your name!
Think it was a joke also. The question was how would we be better off with McCain. Thought her answer was funny and thta the audience did also.
That was an excellent question by Dave and I have no problem with Rachel’s response. It’s a comedy show after all.
I understood Rachel’s response as; we already know how McCain would have been; terrible. But at least we would have Sarah P to whip us all in line with her one liners and folksy stuff (hopey and changy, lip stick on a pig, don’t run reloady- all those great stuff)

I agree, I don’t see anything wrong in Rachel’s response.
Really, I didn’t see anything wrong with her answer either, Her answer was rewarding really. Just the thought of Palin not being VP, made me smile showing all thirty-two

I don’t watch Letterman that much, but today I want to say ” THANK YOU MR. LETTERMAN”.
Can you just imagine Vice President Palin? OMG! The song wouldn’t be God Bless America, but God Help America.
As I posted on a previous thread:
Rachael Maddow’s first response to this should have been something like -the people complaining and saying those things are Republicans who can’t give Pres Obama credit for all the things he has accomplished and list a good few of them.

Rachel is one of those people complaining.

The awesomeness of Rachael’s answer is too stinkin’ much!

If Mittens goes on Dave’s show, I hope he asks him and lets see what answer we get.
I was focused more on the question than her answer. I think the question was a thing of beauty. Haven’t heard anyone else phrase a question anywhere close to the way Letterman phrased that one.
Thanks for the Letterman/POTUS clip. It reminds us that the President is doing exactly what he promised. I am so proud of him everyday.
Thank you for your comments Claire. Yes, he makes me proud of him everyday that I am alive. And nothing RM says will ever diminish who President Barack H. Obama is or will be. That is the question and the answer. Amen.HZ
