Good morning Chips. I received this in my mail a few minutes ago. This is a great example of PBO taking it to the people. I love it.
Good morning Chips, I think you must personally lead our petition since we have a huge network of people linked into this diary.
Good Morning, Chips and the Family! Looking in briefly and early, it feels great to be reminded that our President and his staff work in a timely and purposeful manner! This coming on stream about now is totally opportune, IMO. Let others grandstand and show their true colours, PBO will lead in his own way, adding meaningful building blocks along his, and the country’s, path. Government by the people and for the people, reaching out to the people! Way to facilitate this Mr. President and staff!  Thanks for the heads up, Meta. Have a wonderful and positive day, Everyone! And today let’s look for the pluses and uplift ourselves and each other with the positive!
Exactly vc, “Building Blocks” truer words, that is indeed what this administration has been all about from the start.
Good morning Chips and TOD family. I received this email this morning and signed up to let me know when the site i up. I love how President Obama is alway coming up with new ways for letting people know he wants to hear from us, and really wants to do what he can to make things better for us.
Should read when the site is up.
This is totally OT. Is it true that AOL is trying to sell HuffPuff?
HP is horrible but the story does not seem credible.
All I know is Arianna was everywhere yesterday on her latest Obama bashing tour. She was on msnbc’s Martin Bashir yesterday, and he asked her about Eric Cantor saying no fed help for people affected by disasters unless there are equal number of cuts. So this prompted Arianna to launch into an anti-Obama attack—-unconnected and stupefying. Bashir cut her off and said —before you launch into your Obama grievances, could you please address the question which was about Cantor. Arianna is another big fake, another grifter, just in it for whatever riches she can grab, no core values.
I can’t understand why she booked on these shows. But true to form, she is always selling something when she gets out there. Glad to hear Bashir cut her off.
The media has gone to pots.
Wow – Martin interrupted her?
LOL. Did he really say that? Oh man, that’s hilarious.
Weekly World News is a tabloid. This is the same site that said Michelle Obama was pregnant back in January.
How exciting. Makes you feel a part of the change that has come to America. l just love our president.
Make that two (well, two gazillion) of us who love our president.
Wow. I like that a lot. And I can’t believe that good looking young man (Macon Phillips) was once a young boy in my Sunday School class! Thanks Macon, you are doing a very good job! I go to WhiteHouse.gov frequently and I love it.
How cool is that? Macon has really provided incredible vision and leadership. He’s got a great job and he’s doing it with pride and excellence!! And he seems like a very nice guy.
This is great – I look forward to participating once the site is up. I hope it is properly moderated and doesn’t disintegrate into another OFA troll infested site.
Great job President Obama and the members of the Obama Administration. This is how an effective and proactive government works. In so many ways he shows us that “We The People” do have say in how OUR government can and should work.
This is a lot like the youtube townhalls where the questions could be asked and voted up and the top ones were asked of the President. Sure he always got the legalize pot question, but this is a great idea. Now I’m sure there will be a lot of teabagger and nutroot dominated questions as they can easily organize signatures, and while they deserve to be answered just as much as any others, they can’t be allowed to dominate the system. I’d also look for “flood controls” so a group of folks can’t sign every petition burying others, especially more grassroots non-internet slacktivist ones.
Just love the idea. Very, very nice.
OT From yesterday. Just wanted to point out that with all the hysteria by the media over Boehner sticking a knife in the president’s back, to my mind, it is Boehner that will again look like the small man he is.
While I am sick and tired of being sick and tired of the disrespect directed at this president, I am also glad that he refuses to climb down into the gutter with the media and the GOP.
The GOP is notorious for creating confusion and the media is right there to let them carry on this charade. The PL on the other hand (chiefly Markos last night) who called the president a wimp, to my mind are a bunch of weaklings projecting their own feelings on PBO.
But he never allows them to dictate to him and that makes them royally pissed.
Africa you are so on-point with this. And here is the standard response I have been giving to anyone who dares to regurgitate that intellectually lazy meme about the President “caving in:”
The executive branch and legislative branch are co-equal branches of government, and the President does not dictate to congress when joint sessions are held. There has to be a mutually agreed upon date/time. Obama cannot “stand up” to congress, he has to cooperate WITH THEM.
Rather, John Boehner CAVED IN TO RUSH LIMBAUGH, when the speaker should have stood up to the radio talk show host. Limbaugh is not part of the government and Boehner owes him no deference on issues pertaining to congressional matters. Yet, after agreeing upon a time/day, Boehner reversed his decision at the behest of someone who is not even part of government!! So who really “caved in?” It was John Boehner – and that is where the disappointment and scorn should be deposited, not on President Obama.
Spot on, Hope!!
Markos needs to clean his own filthy house before he flings shit on anyone else.. wimp indeed. He’s such a wus he can’t control the TEA BAGGERS of his own republican site. pfft on Markos, repub at heart and soul, small person who thinks the President needs to start WWIII over everything inconsequential just to feed Markos’ Need for proof of maniless. Markos, makes me laugh with his little punk self.
THIS IS AN AWESOME IDEA..I HAVE REC’D SEVERAL DNC PRESIDENTIAL SURVEYS THAT I HAVE FILLED OUT AND SENT…BUT,THEY HAVE NOT BEEN RECEIVED. THEREFORE, I SINCERELY BELIEVE ‘PBO HATERS’ RUN INTERFERENCE IN THE POST OFFICE. SAD…BUT TRUE AND HARD TO PROVE…BUT IT DOES EXIST! THIS IS A WAY TO GET THRU W/O WORRYING ABOUT THE MAIL SYSTEM BEING TAINTED!
Sue you are so wrong. It is an insult to the United States Postal Service employees everywhere. There are bad apples in most segments of society but, I don’t think most Postal employees would jeopardize their employment to prevent one piece of mail from getting to its destination especially, with the Republican Issa who is hell bent on dismantling the PO as we know it.. Political mail gets preferential treatment.
I do hope there are protections against potential fraud. It has to be line a off-line petition where you have to sign your real name, address etc, and your IP should be crosschecked with the address you are providing. Make an email address mandatory and send a confirmation email that will remove ones name if it bounces back because the email doesn’t exist or it was sent to somebody who claims their email address was used but it wasn’t them.
Yes, I agree that these protections are vital to the integrity of the site.
NPR has become incredibly right-wing. Their story on this stated that all sides look bad: an unpopular president and Congress, interviewed GOP shills who stated the President is always just politicking. Guess they are worried about losing funding. Lack of objective media makes organizing, blogs, Internet sources for news so important. Thanks Chips for this place’
The President is not unpopular. In fact he has a personal likeability rating in the 70+ range, making him very popular. The poll questions about handling of his job in reality assess people’s agreement or disagreement with a particular issue of the day that’s being discussed and distorted in the media news cycle. So even the numbers about approval of his job handling are distorted because the news cycle and information feed about the President’s decisions and positions are distorted. Is there a contact via Twitter or email for NPR?
The “unpopular President” is a GOP/MSM created meme. For all of their obsession with polls, they don’t want to acknowledge that PBO’s personal popularity is high. You are correct about the distorted poll numbers. I’m not even sure who these people are who they poll, I have never been polled other than for local politicians, we also don’t know what questions are asked or how they are phrased.
I was watching the local CBS news last night with my mother and heard PBO’s poll numbers being down to 38% but no name of who took the poll or what exactly it was for. That certainly made me feel depressed. Think I will try to email the local station about why they did not add the other info in? It may have been for handling of the economy because if you dump the entire issue on him to rate it could be a low result.
Has there been an announcement when the Joint Congressional Address will be next Thursday. The more I think about it, I think it should be at 9pm – if people choose to watch football over it – that’s on them. Anything earlier and you’re in west coast drive time. Also there is a huge non-football watching audience anyways – and if the game starts at 8:30, it will be underway by 9pm so the President could get more folks flipping over from the game even if it is just during lulls and commercials. Also a lot of folks have DVR’s and such, and could also watch it on line at a later time.
If folks complain about the 9pm time and clashing with the NFL, claim the President wanted it on Wednesday, but Sp. Boehner offered Thursday instead, and while the President is a big football fan, he is missing the game to make the speech to the people because he believes it’s too important.
Great idea. StR.
I heard 7:30, Chuck Todd the source, so…….
7:30 is perfect. I thought of it last night. The president doesn’t want to intterupt thr big opening of football season. He also wants to catch the game.
Unlike Cheney who told us we would be greeted in the streets of Iraq with flowers, but in fact we were not welcome there, Libyans thank America and President Obama.
From Nick Kristoff of NYT:
Thanks for this africa. I’ve tweeted it!
Please do not read the comment section of the Steve Benen’s article on the blow-up from yesterday. There are full pathetic comments.
“Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa OBAMA CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVED, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!”
I’ve had it with those feckless whining do-nothing emoprogs. They’re doing more to defeat President Obama than even the Teapugs.
Love Benen. Ignore the comments.
I stopped reading the comments on Benen’s site a long time ago. He writes about Cantor or other GOP idiots, the comments attack PBO, it just gets worse. It is sad, really i think the sane people have given up on commenting.
He used to have decent commenters way back when but now they’re just idiots.
Always great reads on that site even if I disagree. The comments are always stank. always.
It’s a major go-to for me throughout the day. I have come to completely ignore the comments. Which is really sad — we should be able to have reasonable discussions but we can’t we the left wing version of the tea party.
I’m sure I’m not known for my good news, but this editorial about Mayor Rahm Emanuel in the Chicago Sun-Times yesterday is priceless. Emanuel took part in a triathlon last weekend and placed quite well. This pragmatic progressivism at its best, and in my opinion the Mayor of Chicago is the job Emanuel was born to do. The editorial is tongue-in-cheek so please accept it as such:
I’m glad Rahm realized his dream as Mayor, but damn, I sure do miss him as Chief of Staff. He got it done! Boehner wouldn’t be pulling all these shenanigans on Rahm. Of course, the PL that is now whining about PBO “caving” couldn’t stand Rahm’s take-no-prisoners attitude and his dismissal of them as crybabies.
We need a Rahm clone, lol.
I think this was going to be the Republican M.O. no matter what. If anything, Rahm could have lost his temper and become part of the story.
He is a natural fit for Mayor. His wife and kids say how happy he is when he comes home from work, he loves this job so much.
You will hear a number of people get on him for not being so nice to unions. No one is a union supporter more than I am; but let’s be clear: what passes for a fair day’s work of the Chicago municipal employee is a travesty and needs to be addressed. I will NEVER accept an end to union representation — and this is NOT what Emanuel is trying to do. He would just like the city worker to put in an honest day’s work. Some do, of course. Many do not. I have a number of friends and family in the system and I know what I’m talking about.
The line Emanuel has walked has so far been masterful. This city is ready for a winding down of the corruption that has robbed this city of its vitality for decades.
Reallly makes me want to move to Chicago!
My youngest daughter will be moving to Chicago in a few weeks for around three years while her fiance is going to law school there. Guess I’ll enjoy visiting!
And p.m. carpenter agrees with you! Really thinks Obama is not getting the greatest political advice these days and could use a little Rahm in the house.
Short memories folks. Rahm wasn’t well liked by the GOP and it was Rahm that had advised Obama to go small on HCR or put it off completely. Whether its Rahm or Daley, lots of people had lots of negative things to say about Obama’s tactics and policies.
Why is the University of North Texas Donating to Republicans?
THIS really has to go to the President’s people

Christine O’Donnell Takes To Twitter After Tea Party Rejection
Notice how every time the president is about to engage in something important, the media and PL (GOP doesn’t even have to bother) look for ways to tear him down, but he ends up winning, leaving them walking away with eggs on their faces.
Chips, I hope you have that egg-splattered picture ready.
Many are so invested in this president losing re-election, they can’t see straight. They overreach, they get nasty and just besides themselves.
All the while, PBO keeps working long term.
Anyone else notice that except for the manufactured scandal (i.e., social secretary Desiree, Beck with his ugly toward Van Jones), this White House is scandal-free. These are some of the things that make these people incensed. Imagine that more than two years into this presidency, zilch. For most around this time, they were mired in kaka.
As well, the president and his family are close-knit. He loves his wife and children. This is not the norm. They want something nasty to jab at and and without it, they manufacture, conjure, create their own controversies.
President Obama drives these people royally batty and it shows via their desperation.
“Notice how every time the president is about to engage in something important, the media and PL (GOP doesn’t even have to bother) look for ways to tear him down, but he ends up winning, leaving them walking away with eggs on their faces.”
After this whole debacle about PBO giving his job speech is over, PBO will come off the winner like he usually does. I personally think the president is setting up the Spealer and the GOP, but the emeprogs and the PL not smart enough to understand.
The emeprogs are too busy with the day to day who’s up and who’s down narrative they create.
The PL is not part of the President’s base. They are in fact another arm of the Republican party. The PL consists mostly of Libertarians and former Republican-now-turned-progressive pundits. They have their own brand of racism and supported John Edwards and are looking for another likeness in the form of John Hunstman. Therefore, their goal is ultimately to undermine this President to go back to a Republican Presidency (which is where their comfort lies).

Well TOD’ers here we are the day after the President announces that he is going to give a major speech on his jobs program to put people back to work and what is the headline of the day…..”Did he cave again”….”Wish he hadn’t given in”….”How disrespectful of the Speaker”….”Both sides are to blame” and on and on.
I’ll say this the person that I have followed as President for the last 2 1/2 years doesn’t play political games when it comes to governing our nation. Sometimes I wish he would and at times I find myself projecting my desires unfairly unto him. I think we might find ourselves guilty of that again in this situation. Nothing that I have witnessed from PBO tells me that he wanted his announcement about this speech to be clouded by some conflict about an insignificant Republican debate. He just doesn’t work like that. Its not in his nature as a leader to do things that way. Our President is narrowly focused on putting people back to work and wanted to hit the ground running on the first day that Congress was back in session. Nothing more nothing less. Someone on his staff IMO didn’t understand the significance of the pushback the media would give regarding the Republican debate and since historically no one ever denies the President’s request to speak before Congress (or should I say before the black man became President of the United States) they didn’t think this would be a big deal. They miscalculated that our lazy, sloppy, irresponsible media would ALL come to the defense of NBC/Politico and beat this dead horse to death. Of course we can always count on the naysayers and whiners to use any opportunity to feel justified for their already negative feelings about President Obama.
I plan to focus on all the great stuff the O’Team is coming out with in the lead up to the speech. I just love the idea of the WH petition. I mentioned in a message I left here on the blog yesterday that this was one of the frustrations that the group of people from the “I Want To Work” event I have going on had with the administration. They could never tell if their ideas were reaching anyone in the WH. Now all they have to do is petition their idea with enough signatures and they will be reviewed. Simply Brilliant!!!
I better get to work. Everyone have a great day!!
Bobfr needs to get on this! As I remember, he had some fabulous ideas that he listed on a post here the other day!
“Someone on his staff IMO didn’t understand the significance of the pushback the media would give regarding the Republican debate and since historically no one ever denies the President’s request to speak before Congress (or should I say before the black man became President of the United States) they didn’t think this would be a big deal.”
I don’t believe this . His staff know how the MSM react. Could this be a set-up to get more viewers? Maybe.
I agree with you Desraye. And I think we would be well advised to focus instead on the spinelessless of John Boehner who was elected to be in a position of leadership in the legislative branch of government, yet ALWAYS needs the permission of a racist, ignorant millionaire radio talk show host before making important decisions that will affect the future of this country. Where is the media on this matter? Where are the headlines about John Boehner caving in to this racist radio talk show host? Where are the demands from the progressives holding John Boehner for his failure to create jobs since he was sworn in? Obama did not hire congress, so he cannot “boss them around” and demand that they conform to his wishes. That job is for the the American people. Congress was elected by the people for the people, and they should be held acountable by the people.
So Desraye you think the WH welcomed this pushback from the media about the upcoming speech to be stepped all over by a dispute about when to give that speech so that they could get more viewers????
Yes I do. Its makes Bohner looks petty. It also makes the president speech seen more important. Obama staff have bee dealing with the MSM for two years. They are used to them overreacted.
If so, that’s frighteningly convoluted. Usually the simplest answer is the answer: they miscalculated. Badly. They were not prepared for Boehner’s move and the pushback from the media. Frankly, I find this unforgivable and a little disturbing.
I’m not advocating for Obama to mimic Malcolm X. But there is a need from a great many Americans right now to see Obama push back and call out Republicans directly. Even the few sane Republicans are saying this in polls that ask a serious question about it.
Obama has established that he’s the only adult in the room. If we got one thing out of the debt ceiling debacle, it’s that. But voters need to feel an emotional connection, and unfortunately that is often about the proper channeling of public outrage. If anything, Obama needs to make sure the electorate continues to understand Republican damage.
Obama can do it in Obama-speak and on Obama-terms. That Friday afternoon press conference when he was un-tethered from some of his political advisors, was pure genius on an emotional, policy and governing basis.
I’m seeing staunch, sensible supporters getting irritated. We saw it here yesterday. p.m. carpenter wants to Fed Ex Rahm back to the WH. This is not something we can ignore. We have to face the fact that if staunch Obama-supporters like all of us here are irritated, then you can imagine the tuning out of the less engaged.
I feel like Plouffe and Daley are adivisng as if it’s 2007, and we have to prepare the country to not be threatened by the black man. Axelrod never got over that, in my opinion. Barack Obama is the duly and overwhelmingly elected President of the United States. His enemies are not Congress, they are the Republicans in the Congress. He is “called out” and “put in his place” daily by every Republican that claws their way to the microphone. It’s time to find the Obama way of honing the message about who is doing damage to this country. Channel the outrage in Obama-speak, on Obama-terms so that we take back the narrative and get through to the electorate.
Bush/Cheney acted from Day One as if they had a huge mandate, and they had lost the popular vote for God’s sake. It was brazen, but effective. We have every right to expect our duly, overwhelmingly elected President of the United States to continue to act on the mandate he was given in 2008.
If you want to call me PL or a Republican shill or a troll, I’m no longer letting those comments make me cry. I know who I am. I know the success I want for this President and this country and the unimaginable danger we face if Republicans get more power. We’re all willing to fight and fight long and hard. I don’t think the President is getting the best political advice these days. They need us to fight with them and for them. Sometimes they need to make our fight a little easier.
Flame away. I needed to say it.
I only caught a small portion of Jay Carney on Morning Joke but he said that they only had two days to choose from next week cause Congress is going on break again Friday! I think the RW and LW blew it out of proportion about PBO choosing Wed initially. It wasn’t a punch in the face as both sides suggested he was just picking best date. That’s probably why Boehner didn’t object at first. But after the blow up and media hissy fit…Boehner was too much of a coward to do the respectable thing. It’s a shame.
I know some were complaining about Daley’s handling of this and wish Rahm were back but I don’t think it would have mattered. Daley is not a newbie…he’s an operator. This guy helped push through NAFTA and was a Clinton cabinet member he understands a tough environment but who can predict crazy.
I actually wanted PBO to give speech on Wed at another location but now I don’t believe it would have worked b/c the controversy would have overshadowed whatever he said. It doesn’t “feel” good but I think it was the right move IMO
Got to get ready for work…Happy September! We’re roasting here in AZ, but at least SAYING September sounds good! Don’t forget to listen to Randi today…I’m sure that she’ll be ripping some new ones today! Everyone have a good day:)
Hot and humid here in Chicago. I certainly won’t miss Randi today.
A Real Republican
I remember during the ’08 election season while he was still in the Senate he was warning about how bad the republican party had gotten and his own party attacked him mercilessly. He tried to warn everyone and the GOP has only gotten worse.
I think Chuck Hagel is a decent guy but I don’t buy into his premise that if only PBO had put forward the Simpson-Bowles proposal, the whole debt ceiling flare-up wound have never happened. I don’t think he get’s how his party has become absolutely addicted to crisis and brinksmanship. They simply do not care about issues, only process and intransigence. And there were parts of S-B that were not viable.
I know meta but you’re looking at it from a Democratic stand point and he sees it from the Republican viewpoint. I guess what I admire in him is that eventhough, being a Republican, he has a very different vision about policy and what role this Democratic President should play in said policty he as a dying breed has the ability to reconginze and call out the craziness that exisit on his side. It’s refreshing to hear him say it :)
I agree about that!!
I have loved former Sen. Chuck Hagel ever since his takedown of somebody in Bush’s administration during a hearing about the war(s). I used to find that video on YouTube and watch it every now and then, during the campaign – he has such perfect pitch on certain matters, it was uplifting! Think I recall his wife came out for Barack Obama in ’08, and I’m just sure he secretly voted for him, too.
A real voice of reason. Wish he and Colin Powell would announce they are changing parties.
If you can’t spare this much time (9+ mins.) to see former Sen. Chuck Hagel in action back in ’07 (talking to Gen. Petraeus and Amb. Crocker), please just watch my favorite part (when he loses it!) during the last three minutes, especially his ending (“For what? … Buy time? For What?”).
Again, here’s Hagel, at his finest – back in ’07. He, Biden, Levin, and others were putting forth a bi-partisan resolution on Iraq. This is one of the most love-of-country-over-party speeches I’ve ever heard. If you have the time (it’s 8+ mins.), you may want to check this out. Reminds us – keeping in mind he’s an “old-school” Republican – what we’re talking about today, when we say we want bi-partisan compromise on legitimate issues.
this is unreal.

I now fully accept the premise that the media loves conflict and does not care about presenting the truth in a clear way. If one goes over to HP and just go down the different stories every single one that pretain to Politics all have a negative spin in regards to Obama. The impression that you get he’s weak or he is not trying hard enough
Its Hufiington Post/ AOL. You shouldn’t expect something good out of this website. I mean its ex-owner goes on tv and bashes the President constantly.
Huffington Post has long been anti-Obama. Arianna’s Republican roots were never far away from her nasty, snarky dishonest headlines.
Arianna Huffington is a Republican, she praised Jon Huntsman.
And to think that I wasted two and a half years posting on that joke of a blog, it’s truly like an elementary school playground there. The moderation is a joke with certain words triggering an autofilter which sends your post to pending, trolls are able to post anti-Obama garbage whereas you get banned for calling them out, the badge system is straight Chuckie Cheese bullshit, they allow posters the ability to moderate the blog, and of course they’re all bash Obama all the time, while defending Huffington, Greenwald, Hamsher, Olbermann, Krugman, and the other opinion talking heads who don’t do a fucking thing but complain about what Obama should/shouldn’t do.
At some point this should get old it is for me, I see it so often its sicken. The country is in a ditch which they (HP and PL) claim they want solve but for the last three yrs its been bash the pres at all the time.

We need to push this everyday until congress starts to move.
“We the People” is now trending on Twitter in the US!
PBO’s approval numbers are somewhere below 40% in most major polls, but I have a feeling we are going to still win in a LANDSLIKE in Nov. 2012. It is only 14mos awasy folks. SO keep your eyes on the PRIZE. KEEP HOPE ALIVE!! Obama/Biden 2012!!
I mean landslide
Up three today on Gallup Keith, and his disapproval rating is down four. I’ve a feeling people liked how he handled Hurricane Irene. ;-)
Keith I like your positive attitude and it serves us well to remember that this is August summer silly season and the media has really been actively trying to take down this President all summer. The polls are problematic for me because the drop started after Gallup expressed frustration that the President’s numbers weren’t sufficiently low enough to his liking. That tells me that there is some manipulation going on where these polls are concerned. Just as the GOP has voter suppression tactics, the pollsters who work on behalf of the GOP and PL are also suppressing this President’s poll numbers. We just don’t know exactly how they’re doing it yet, but they’re doing it, trust me.
Another point: 2 months before the Presidential election in September 2008, John McCain led Senator Obama by 10 points among likely voters. These current polls are 15 months out and mean diddly squat!
