‘how much more lost can these people get?’

Steve Benen: For eight years, just about every time George W. Bush was in the same room as someone with a post-graduate degree, the failed former president would tell the same joke: “I remind people that, like when I’m with Condi I say, she’s the Ph.D. and I’m the C-student, and just look at who’s the president and who’s the advisor.”

Republican crowds always cheered the line, reinforcing the anti-intellectual attitudes that too often dominate conservative thought … Rick Perry is cut from the same cloth.

… Perry made the joke during a speech yesterday at Liberty University, a school founded by crazed televangelist Jerry Falwell. The Texas governor didn’t say much about politics, but he spent a fair amount of time talking about what a lousy student he was.

Perry noted, for example, that at his small high school, “I graduated in the top 10 of my graduating class - of 13.” The crowd laughed and applauded.

…. Perry isn’t just celebrating anti-intellectualism; he’s living it. He doesn’t care what biologists, climate scientists, economists, historians, or dictionaries have to offer; Perry already has all the information he needs….

Oh Vc, I love it. Just love it. Thanks so much. I was so glad that you put your thank you up to Chips. You saved me from buying a new computer. Well I did and cancelled my order. I didn’t know what was going on. I’m cruising now, lol. Thanks to you and Chips. This browser is wayyyy better than IE, hands down. Thanks a bunch.

Tally, I did do the research after I saw your post. And, I was impressed. I only used a Mac in a work situation once and may take your advice. I always stick with a Dell, laptop, I’m on my second one. This one is only two years old, so…… But a Mac may be the one. Thanks for the suggestion. I saw that Chips gave you a hard time last night, lol, but I took note. Thanks.

You’ve planted a seed here, Tally. I’ve never considered the MAC before, having never used one but who knows? My old desk top is starting to ‘creak’, and I can’t update its browser because my current browser is sooooo old it’s not acknowledged. :(

DF, I just posted this in the post where I entered this evening. Isn’t it terrific and greatly encouraging to see that despite the noise, the obstructions, the disloyalty of team members, the do nothingness of the opposition, America’s first outstanding, and caring, president is fulfilling his oath to the American people? He keeps building and building while they look on, or try to tear down his vision for the country. I am so impressed by THIS. PRESIDENT!!! If they frustrati really understood leadership they’d be shining his shoes with their hair and begging him to stay on til 2016.

Totally agree with you:) Love him. Just love him.He does the right thing by the people of this country. We need to work our collective behinds off…not an option. Glad you found that too…great minds:)

I agree with you 100%…they don’t know a real leader is, they have never seen anyone like PBO. But, you would think that they know right from wrong, and PBO is doing what is right (at least he is trying).

I’ve never understood this mentality.. downplaying an education as if it’s something to be ashamed of.. pride in ignorance. I grew up in the 60s & 70s- my mother was born in the 30s when women had so few choices and opportunities, she really pushed us to learn, to be open to information- she bought, with very hard earned $$ in the late 50s a set of new encyclopedias- specifically so that we did not go without the latest and most thorough info in our time. I’m just so ashamed of Americans who find this behavior from Perry and other GOP politicians to be acceptable. I can see how President Obama is frightening to some of them, he is so obviously smart and speaks always of the importance of education and of becoming the best we can be.

Shame on Perry - the GOP, for rewarding ignorance, for setting the bar so low for Americans. Gawd I’m tired of the Bush clowns. I will fight so hard to make certain this creep never becomes President.

      September 15, 2025 at 9:56 pm

Exactly. I had the same discussion with my brother who like Palin. I told him I’d rather have an intelligent president who got great grades. worled hard, was not from privilege, whose mother and grandmother instilled in him the value of education. These are the same virtues he and his wife are instilling into their daughter. The GOP has celebrated ignorance as a virtue in a president. I don’t thing GWB was “dumb” as he pretended but he was not a thinker nor had an analytical mind. Perry is a dumb ass and it shows.

      • 25 vcprezofan2
        September 15, 2025 at 10:07 pm

JoJo I do not think GWB was pretending. I think he was simply out of his depth (i.e he had no depth). Granted I never followed his presidency, but I cannot think of ONE area of strength I would ascribe to him!

        • 26 JoJothecat
          September 15, 2025 at 10:55 pm

I don’t know if I followed him much I just watched a few of his press conferences and I would cringe. This man came from privilegde but he pretended to be this southern texan and he did not fool me. This guy grew up on the east coast went to the best schools but he was a slacker. He was not dumb. I think GWB has a learning deficiency maybe dyslexia. People with dyslexia can have a high IQ but without help can do poorly in school which maybe the reason GWB was a “C” student. I think the presidency was beyond his capabilities and you could tell he was uncomfortable speaking in public that it made me uncomfortable listening to him. Rick Perry is Bush II only worst. Rick Perry admitted his college counselors told him he was not cut out to be veterinarian. He blamed it on being in ROTC? The man just does not have half the smarts Bush has which is not saying much.

You know who I’m convinced has an LD? The chick from Alaska. Those word salads she produces suggests someone who needed language help in school but got overlooked. She probably got by on her looks and athletic ability. GWD, on the other hand, may very well have an LD but he looks so vacuous to me at times that I think of him as somewhat of a simpleton (in the old-fashioned interpretation). IMO he only got to the best schools because of his family name /resources.

    • 28 vcprezofan2
      September 15, 2025 at 10:03 pm

You know I think they only try to set the bar so low in order to normalize their own less than stellar academic performance. ‘We couldn’t meet high standards, so let’s lower the expectations. Let’s make whatever WE accomplished more acceptable.’ I also think Perry is doing this now to take control of this aspect of his lack of accomplishments - ‘I said it first, I’m not ashamed of it, so there!’ IMO it’s pathetic he felt the need to do so at an institution of higher learning, and I would like to think that despite the laughter there were many young people present who were not impressed. Imagine paying much to be educated at a ‘prestigious university’ then having one of the university’s heroes share such disdain for education.

…lack of education was the reason to deny Black folks jobs (during Reconstruction). Education became paramount…we taught ourselves and others. Mama always told me, “get your education, that’s the one thing that can never ever be taken away from you”. We got our education and we still were not hired, so we created our own jobs. We because doctors, lawyers, judges…we founded colleges, hospitals, nursing schools, medical schools, banks, etc. We worked hard to be somebody, we worked hard to prove that we were just as good as “White” folks and now to be educated is a bad thing!?!?!. What in the world is going on?

Who the hell in this day and age celebrates anti-intellectualism? A nation that doesn’t provide education for its citizens is a nation that will forever remain backward. The GOP likes to tout “job creators” and how they can magically fix the economy. Well those “job creators” had to acquire various levels of education to be where they are. The GOP likes to go to the hospital and be taken care of by a more than competent doctor. Well that doctor had to acquire various levels of education to be halfway decent. The GOP have to pay taxes. Well that accountant/tax preparer had to acquire various levels of education in order to competently prepare their taxes. The GOP may scream and cheer for anti-intellectualism but when they use services; they sure do like to use services run by competent people. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds.

The whole premise for the GOP, or the power hungry to tout anti-intellectualism is to keep th emasses dumb, sick, poor, and fearful. This is how they maintain power. Even the mediocre white folks like Christine O’donnell, Sarah Palin, DEADBEAT dad, Joe Walsh, et.al. are given more respect by the media and powers, only to be used as tools. Yet they will profit from their grifting and will never be questioned on their competence, or their citizenship like PBO. And why is that? White Privilege.

And the the REALITY of Barack Hussein Obama being black, attending HARVARD, and ascending to the presidency of these United States of America, has given them evern more incentive to downplay EDUCATION/INTELLEGENCE. We can’t have any more of them nigras thinking they can get into the White House like Barack Obama, now can we?

Yep. And it feels rather like the previous occupant’s comment was a wee bit misogynist and racist too: this black woman had to work her way to the top of her academic profession only to then serve at the behest of this generations-of-family-wealthy man, father and son. What’s wrong with this picture?
