Paul Ryan Endorses ‘Unemployment Reform’ That Asks The Jobless To Work More For Less:VIDEO
Paul Ryan Supports Plan to Let Unemployed Work for Free
Georgia Works: Little Data To Recommend Jobs Program Eyed By White House
Fred, beware: this is a firebagger meme and is meant to blast Obama’s AJA — the ‘work for free’ meme has been picked up all over the firebagger universe.
Obama’s plan does is modeled after the Georgia Works plan. Don’t quote me on specifics but my understanding is that in exchange for a portion of unemployment benefits, you will either do volunteer work or other jobs. There is also a provision that puts together a partnership with employers: instead of being laid off, the employer keeps the employee but pays, say, 30 hours/week and unemployment picks up the other 10 hours. Deaniac did an analysis of this at TPV after AJA was announced.
So although Crooks and Liars is pointing a finger at Paul Ryan, it is meant to say that Obama is proposing that the unemployed ‘work for free’.
57&female, if this is indeed the case with AJA, that the employer would pay 30 hours/week, do you know if it also means that the employer also pick up a portion of the health insurance?
Here is a bit from one of the links from Fred’s 2nd link –
Georgians receiving unemployment benefits are matched with employers who are seeking employees and who agree to provide up to eight weeks of training. The employers do not pay the workers, who work no more than 24 hours a week; instead workers continue to receive their unemployment checks and a $240 stipend to help cover transportation, child care and other expenses.
That’s actually not a bad gig. You’re paid $10 to train. That’s better than some new jobs where are at $8 per hour, only pennies more than minimum wage. Hardly asking the unemployed to work for free.

A man who is prepared to stand behind his word, even when obstacles are thrown in the way!! Thank you to Mr. President and his team! I totally respect the President for the way he goes after the more meaningful (=permanent) solutions despite the clamoring of the masses for the quick fix. IMO this is a good sign that he’s not politicking; he’s going for ‘change we can believe in’ – change that makes a difference in real lives What a positive note on which to start the day!
Enjoy your day Chips, and TOD-ville, and for today be totally happy that we are standing with President Obama on the right side of history! ‘Ain’t no stopping us now. We’re on the move!’ is playing in my head.
I turned in “The Last Word” with Law-D and heard Savage one of the gay rights activist say how the gay community pushed and threatened the president to end DADT. He accused the president of stone-walling on the issue and deferring it until 2011. In turn, the gay community so upset with this president stayed home and withdrew money in the 2010 elections. Has half of America gone batass crazy? The president wasn’t running in 2010! Look what we got from this crazy assumption, a crazy congress that has one mission and that is to see the president fail.
Lady Gagme will soon be taking credit also, despite the fact that she, Savage, Choi and these other stooges didn’t do shit to push for DADT repeal, aka lobby Congress. That’s what narcissism gets you.
The so-called gay “activists”are in reality showboaters. The whole nauseating dan choi ring drama with harry reid and then his later cavorting with the rethugs was just uugghh. These nutters actually hurt the LGBT causes.
But The Human Rights Campaign endorsed the President for reelection in May of this year:
“President Obama has improved the lives of LGBT Americans more than any President in history,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. The endorsement is worth reading : http://www.hrc.org/15646.htm

I’ll pop in when I can. Anybody got a link to the super committee where all their names and addies are?
gah! why did i ask this? WIW has it of course on the bottom of her “Contact Congress” page – Thanks WIW :-)

Suspend is painting the president as a sexist!
Unreal! Like he really needs this?
Suskind! This guy is making his rounds! Of course, if thus hurts the women vote, I will be really pissed!
Why did this President give access to Woodward and suskind?
These two write hit pieces and took advantage of openness!
Never let anybody into that WH to write a book! Ever!
Did you mean Suskinf Jovie? I just happen to turn my tv on and the channel was on MSNBC, and they were discussing the book. Not sure of what was said earlier but it appeared that Mika took issue with his report about women in the administration. She asked very good questions in defense of PBO and women. Also iy appeared that Suskind was slightly walking back on some things.
He better! I still dont know why he let people into the WH to write a book!
I am a little baffled at that also. Suskind said that he talked to a lot of people who had left the administration. Some of those folks may have been disgruntled employees, and I would somewhat question their credibility.
By now I have enough experience with folks who set out to take down the President and see how it eventually turns out for them, and it’s not “luck” as Tweety would have us believe. Our President is on the right side of history – and no weapon formed against him will prosper. How many people know or care who Suskind is?
Suskind’s book is not going to have any real impact in voter’s minds. He will get some traction for a few days – mostly from the GOP loving media and those on the left who have axes to grind with PBO, Geithner, Rahm, Summers, etc. But at the end of the day, the American people aren’t interested in some book peddled by an insanely rich former Wall Street journalist. They support their president who they see working tirelessly on their behalf everyday while the GOP does absolutely nothing but rely on the media to push their lying talking points and distort narratives.
Because he supports the idea of openness? Because he has nothing to hide? Because he has the confidence of knowing he runs a ship manned by people of integrity? Because he initially likes to give people (i.e writers/journalists) the benefit of the doubt? In other words, he doesn’t prejudge each individual, so you get a fair trial and a clean page with him until you mess up. Because when/if they do a hatchet job it reflects more badly on them in the long run? Who was it that said whatever is done in the dark will eventually come to light?
Well said vcprezofan2! Already Suskind’s credibility is being questioned because Anita Dunn openly stated that she never told Suskind that the WH was hostile towards women and she doesn’t believe that it is. So somebody is lying…and I have a feeling it’s not Anita.
What’s done in the dark ALWAYS comes to the light. It’s a universal principle. President Obama has nothing to hide.
And women, at least women with any sense, will know that Pres. Obama is the best choice for our issues, our causes, our lives. And if they, for whatever silly reason, don’t like Pres. Obama, they had better have the sense to vote for him because of who he’s married to. Michelle L. Robinson Obama is the best example of an American woman that we have today.
OOps I just noticed that I mispelled “Suskind”. :)
To accuse President Obama of not respecting women is so ridiculous on its face it won’t stick. For example, the most visible faces of his foreign policy team are women: Hillary Clinton and Susan Rice.
I can accept that there were tensions within the economic team, which I attribute to Sumners’ poor people skills. But Suskind has blown everything totally out of proportion.
I have a suspicion: Suskind is relying heavily on the testimony of the two biggest egos and poorest listeners of the economic team: Sumners and Orzak. for example, they could be the ones saying the president was “indecisive” just because he wasn’t relying SOLELY on their advice, didn’t say “yes” automatically, took the time to listen to opposing views, and was always asking questions that people themselves hadn’t thought about. I wasn’t surprised to hear Gene Sperling saying something to that effect yesterday, in his interview with Piers Morgan.
Good morning everyone! What a wonderful day it is! My husband’s birthday AND the repeal of DADT! Appropriate, as he spent over 20 years in the Navy:) Now, I’ll always remember when his birthday is! (That’s a joke, I always remember) The video was very moving…I found myself getting a bit teary eyed. Congratulations to this President for doing what’s just and right, congratulations to the military personnel that served under this unimaginable law, but will now serve openly, and with pride in themselves and their country.
Happy birthday to your husband Desertflower. I also congratulate PBO on doing what was right.
Thank you! I will pass that along to him!
Happy birthday to Mr Desertflower!!
Thanks, Chips! “Mr. Desertflower”…oh god, he would cringe:) I’ll do it anyway:)
It IS a wonderful day! ;Lol: Many happy returns to Hubby! [So when shall I drop in for my slice of cake? Hubby isn’t fond of chocolate, is he, ‘cos I like plain? ;)]
Happy Birthday to your hubby Desert :D
Make NO mistake. WE WILL WIN THIS THING!!!!
Good read Desertflower. PBO is brilliant!!!!
Yes, he is:)
There’s one fairly long comment that is brilliant and accurate – and gets PBO:
“ShadeTail on September 20, 2011 12:16 PM:
It annoys me how one-sided this point tends to be. Why have so few people noticed that Obama *needed* to be conciliatory before now? Does the word “Congress” not mean anything anymore?
For Obama’s entire administration, Congress has been viciously obstructed by the entire GOP and a fair number of democrats. And in just the past year alone, the Congressional GOP have, **more than once**, literally held the country hostage with the very serious threat of dire consequences if they weren’t appeased.
Why are so many people naive enough to believe that Obama could afford to take a hard line against that? If he had, then absolutely nothing would have gotten done. We wouldn’t have even this foundation of health care reform, nor student loan reform, nor the repeal of DADT, nor any extension of unemployment benefits, nor escaped from the August debt default, and so on and so on and so on.
And the partisanship we see now, while an enjoyable spectacle even to me, is not going to pass either the jobs bill or the deficit bill. Nothing will get done. Obama has clearly decided to gamble that he no longer needs to get anything done, what with the election slowly approaching, and I really hope it works.
But during the past 2.5 years, he clearly felt (correctly I believe) that he did have to actually do stuff, since that is the President’s job. And anyway, with the GOP’s politcal hostage crisis strategy, he couldn’t afford to be partisan without the risk of severely damaging the country. There’s no hostage crisis now, so he has the leeway to be more partisan.”
PLEASE!!!!! Raise the crap out of them…they’ve been freeloading for FAR too long!
Oh dear God,
Please, please, PLEASE, let Pres. Obama raise taxes on Bill O’Lielly. Please? PLEASE???
As high as the taxes need to be for Bill O’Lielly to leave my beloved country, that’s how much Pres. Obama needs to raise his taxes. PRETTY PLEASE??
As long as he doesn’t head to Canada. Based on his ideology, he should either join Greenwald in Brazil – or wherever he is, or move to Somalia where there’s effectively no government.
CHIPS……You may want to post this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DesertFlower, that video puts it right out there. Republicans really don’t care about anyone but themselves. Wow. I forgot that Ron Paul is a physician. I can’t imagine him treating anyone with kindness. Wow, just wow…
I just turn on cspan and that snake Issa is on. What a lying sack of shait.
Is it me or does there seem to be a cloud over the ending of DADT? It’s like the Obama naysayers of the world are bummed out that the fight is over and President Obama has kept his promise. As usual the usual suspects huffpost/crooksandliars/dailykos are strangely silent on this historic day. This whole fight wasn’t about President Obama’s perceived lack of fight, it was about President Obama not doing things the way the Professional Lefters wanted things done. As a community organizer President Obama has figured out long ago how to get things done with or without the help of those who claim to be on his side.
BINGO!! They thrive on mess. PBO kept his focus and for not so, they would have scuttled this whole thing.
Noise in the market is what I hear when I read about them!!
I noticed it, too. Shouldn’t they be all over the tv and radio touting this success? I only heard one brief mention on NPR this morning, way into the news broadcast. I thought there would be billboards, doves flying overhead, and fireworks at midnight. Instead – crickets.
This just goes to show you how ungrateful and meaningless the PL are. The good thing is that real military people are happy that this dark cloud has lifted. That’s what matters.
