CALL TO ACTION #3
Enter to win the “Press On” contest.
Let’s start spreading that wonderful “Press On” photo Chips created. I am going to kinkos to get refrigerator magnets, bumper stickers, and pins printed up. I need to hear from you about what you have done this week to support the President!!!
Did you make phone calls, tweet, fill out email forms, talk about the AJA in the lunch room or on the street with your neighbors? Every act counts,
Remember when Tally offered to drive folks to the polls on election day and Jackie tore up the flyer of Tavis Smiley?
All these actions matter — I want to help you celebrate your accomplishments.
Send me an email describing what you did this weekend and I will announce the winners (yes there will be more than one) on Saturday.
If for some reason you have trouble sending an email just post to the blog.
Done. I had a light week, but this will encourage me to do more.
I just called all the people on the list you posted. First of all its completely accurate. Manchin was the only one who confirmed the “refusal”, the others said they were still in consideration which is good. I remember calling our ex representative who was a conservative Democrat. He eventually voted in favor of what we called about so it always felt like it mattered to take the time to make those calls. However, he was usually one of the last ones to make up his mind so that was hard. Thank you for this information.
WIW, thanks for the link to get in the hides of those wishy washy dems in congress. My senator was Casey, to whom I just expressed my disapproval for his reticence in supporting the AJA. I told him also that he can be replaced for not providing for his constituents that which we sent him to do. I also told him that his duties to us are immensely more urgent than the next election. Sick of these clowns.
Ok, here is what my week was like:
-I made 2 donations: One to Donna and one directly to the President
-I attended two phone banks
-Ran a team meeting
-Made post cards for the AJA and passed them out to 25 people and gave them the address of their congress persons to mail them to
-I responded 4 times to my crongressman who sent me these stupid form letters EXPLAINING the AJA instead of committing to SUPPORTING it.
-I sent a response back to my Senator who sent me a stupid form letter DESCRIBING her position on the economy instead of commiting to the SUPPORTING it.
-I participated in a State wide call for volunteers.
I would love a car poster or window magnet!
Frenchie, here’s a virtual bumper sticker for you:
You’re a treasure, your commitment is just wonderful! Love ya
Woohoo! Thank you Chips! This reward is great, but I just have to say I just looooooove my President! I would do just about anything to make sure he is re-elected. I think I want his re-election even more than I want him to be elected in the first place if that is possible!
“I think I want his re-election even more than I want him to be elected in the first place if that is possible!”
I know what you mean Frenchie, the stakes are so much higher this time.
Keep up the magnificent work, it’s people like you who will get him re-elected.
I couldn’t use Heath Shuler and Pete Defazio’s email, but I emailed and twittered everyone else, and twittered defazio. Thanks for the contacts and for all you do.
Chips I’m off to spread this on twitter and ask people to join me in strongly urging Democrats to straighten up, support President Obama, and pass the American Jobs Act. It’s a freaking excellent bill. There’s nothing; NOTHING radical about this bill.
Thank you UT!!!!!
Yay!!!! Victory Chips. The tweet with the link is being re-tweeted fast and furiously. So thank you for that.
Admiral Mike Mullen is so sweet, kind, and has a wicked sense of humor! The poetic words he said about his wife just melted my heart. He’s so head over heels in love with her. The humor he’s letting out is a joy to see and the respect and admiration he has for President Obama just gladdens my heart. I wish him so much success because he’s served his country with pride.
That’s right. I notice that good people tend to like and respect our President. Bad people, not so much….
That’s what I have surmised. I only try to temper that with some optimism that people can have a change of heart.
Can anyone in these states supply the unemployment rate? It’d be nice to remind the senator in my tweet asking him/her to pass the Jobs Act.
Here you go.
Unemployment rate as of August 2011 (from BLS: http://www.bls.gov/web/laus/laumstrk.htm):
Landrieu LA 7.2%
Hagan NC 10.4%
Casey PA 8.2%
Manchin WVA 8.1%
Schuler NC 10.4%
De Fazio OR 9.6%
Other people don’t surprise me but Casey PA? What is wrong with him? De Fazio OR? I thought he was a progressive darling, u never know with these People. Off to tweet them.
Casey is playing chickens$$t because he is up for re-election; unfortunately, he’s buying the meme that folks in the “T” are trending to the republicans so he’s trying to remain attractive to the most conservative members of the state. I called the Senator’s office this am; spoke with a staffer named Jack. Jack says “the Sen supports the bill, however, since he believes it will not pass, he’d prefer to break it up into smaller pieces and vote on those things that have bi-partisan support. I gave Jack an earful (must say, he remained polite and pleasant) and told him that I’d follow up my call with an e-mail.
You know what? I’m furious with Bob Casey and his wishy washy behavior. In 2006, I worked like a dog for his election and led the volunteer recruitment for his campaign in our county. The T has always been red, so he has absolutely no excuse for catering to them now. On the other hand, he has a real opportunity to win the support of the growing numbers of new Dems and Independents in the T if he shows he has the courage to stand up for something. Pennsylvanians have a lot to swallow with psychopathic Pat Toomey as senator and the corrupt Tom Corbett as governor. We don’t need a limp noodle Dem like Casey as well. I’ve written to him several times and got mealy-mouthed answers. Today I called his office and gave them a piece of my mind, telling them I wanted the message delivered that this was a deal breaker for me as far as support for him. The staffer had the decency to say he understood where I was coming from. The Casey campaign actually had the nerve to send me a fundraising appeal this morning. I said, “Send this to me when you stand with the president and support the American Jobs Act. If you vote against it and don’t back the president, take me permanently off your list of supporter.” At least, every time I get mad at these jerks I send another contribution to the President’s re-election campaign. Even if it’s 5 or 10 dollars, it makes me feel better.
I just contributed yesterday ,anad then found out about this today. I live in the so-called “T” and we worked out butts off for Obama 08 and the Dems. The reason Pres. Obama won by 12 points is because we in the “T” OUTPERFORMED expectations! I will work again for the President, but will be mum about Casey unless he grows some balls. I called his DC office this morning and ranted. I guess the objection is something about capital gains taxes and conservadems are whining. Anybody know about this part of the AJA?
Yeahhhh, that’s how I feel, what’s wrong with Casey In PA??? I thought he was soooo for PBO, ummmm I’m dissappointed In him
Thanks, Meta. I see you often on Twitter
VC, I can’t follow you, your tweets are protected! Just sent you a follow request
Okay, Knowledgeable Ones, what did I do wrong? Why are my tweets protected when I’m not personally protected? And what are they protected for/from?
I emailed an inquiry to my NC Senator Hagan, was she a “yes” or a “no”; and I got an evasive reply that she will work with anybody who blahblahblah and that she was pleased to noticed that some of the AJA included something she had authored re jobs for veterans. I emailed her back and said, “Just tell me are you a ~yes~ or a ~no~”. If you are a ~no~ I will not be supporting you in the future, and I will encourage my friends to follow suit.
i emailed or twittered everyone else but couldn’t email defazio or shuler.
Love the idea about the magnets. Going to get some too.
Will also be targeting these cowardly, bought and paid for senators.
TOD family, I know we’ve been talking about how to stop the media from their attacks on the President., This morning Joe Scarborough and Mika really make me sick to my stomach with their lies and attacks. I have vowed to do everything I can to get that scumbag off the air.
He attacked the President while black children were in his audience. This was just the last straw for me. He and Harold Ford and Steele. It was just vomit inducing.
I know we have a lot to do with working to get the jobs act passed.
But I wonder if we can designate a day next week or the week after for an all-out assault on MSNBC, Phil Griffin and all his staff and Starbucks and its CEO. I’m going to contact some media advocacy groups to see what they suggest. But bottom line is, I will not spend the next 14 months listening to Joe Scumbag and his airhead sidekick belittle our President. I will not.
Open for suggestions and thoughts.
I agree with you 100% proudofobama. Just as President Obama is disrupt dismantling and defeating Al Qaeda, we here need to wage an all out movement against the terrorism that exists in the GOPMEDIA. We need to alert folks that even search engines such as “Google” are interfering with the honest dissemination of information by pushing negative search results for President Obama while covering up negatives for the GOP. We need to EXPOSE what they are doing…..
I’m sick and tired of this Media…they along with their friends in the Republican party are 85% to blame for the stalled recovery in the economy.
I say they are 100% to blame. It’s so sickening to see them trying the “help” that bully Christie and foist him on the American people. He’s not qualified and we don’t want him. And in addition to the media, the pollsters like Gallup are lying and twisting numbers as well. They all need to be exposed. Twitter can help us because we go around them.
You’re right,..I’m being overly generous with my 85%. The pollsters work in tandem with the media. They use their manipulated hourly polls as their chief weapon against this President. The news is not based on event-reporting, but narrative-manufacturing.
GREAT idea. Tell me when.
pigs will fly
Perry: Death of Awlaki An ‘Important Victory In The War On Terror’
Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) released a statement on Friday congratulating the US military, intelligence community and EVEN President Obama on the killing of al Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki.
“The death of American-raised al Qaida leader Anwar al-Awlaki is an important victory in the war on terror,” Perry wrote.
“We must remain vigilant, and make sure we bring every resource and tool to bear in the fight to keep Americans safe,” he concludes.
I still can’t stand him no matter what he says.
Ooops. That’s not going to sit well with those debate audiences.
Wow, I don’t think this move by Ponzi Perry is going to go over well with the GOP leader Rush Limbaugh. I bet Rush will be apoplectic over this. Let’s wait and see if Ponzi Perry has to walk this back.
Well, Perry Is good at walking things back
DNC puts out a new ad for Latinos about the AJA:
Share with your Spanish-speaking circle.
Thanks Meta. Off to spread the video on twtter and let our Latino brothers and sisters know that the passage of the American Jobs Act will impact their lives in positive ways.
Thank you, ut!!
#BoehnerFail is trending!! Keep it up, folks!!
Morning everyone:) Goodness sakes. I woke up late today, because I have a day off of work, and SO much happened while I was asleep! Chips…you are amazing. Simply amazing. As is this community, and as always…this steely eyed Killer of Al Queda, PBO. AGAIN?? WOW.I’d be nervous if I were them…this man will kick your ass before you know what happened!
Will be on the phone making my calls today…someone suggested that we find out what the unemployment rates are in the states of the Dems that are against AJA…great idea! Include that in the call, email, tweet….I would also ask them what exactly are their reservations about the bill….MAKE THEM ANSWER TO THAT….and counter their argument. We know what to do!!
Thanks Chipsticks – this is extremely useful information. And thanks meta for the unemployment numbers in these respective districts. I’m off to contact and request support for the AJA from these critters!
http://www.bls.gov/lau/ Here’s what I found from Labor and Stats….
All of these are as of August 2011
I don’t care what the rate is…LA seems low, guess it’s from the oil (no wonder Mary is being a jerk about it, but I’m guessing the infrastructure in LA could use some fixing…:) As I remember, they DID have a “little” hurricane there a few years back that kicked their butts and made life miserable.
What if this AJA got these #’s WAY down in their states?! That alone would help with there “re election bids” they all seem so worried about if they appear to piss on their BIG MONEY MASTERS! GET THE MONEY OUT OF POLITICS!IT IS KILLING OUR DEMOCRACY!
These are STATE unemployment numbers….you can also find the district numbers on this site, I do believe:)
Twitter addys for the above:
Landrieu doesn’t have a twitter account
@shuler4congress is an old one he doesn’t use
May I ask some of you here to retweet my tweets (when they are ‘good enough’) so that I can grow and figure out what I’m doing right/wrong?
Oh, I’m ‘sonamie’
I am not sure you are following me or that I am following you. I am jbnarizona. I will look you up.
I sent you a follow request (JBNARIZONA)
Thanks. And thanks to Chips and MT.
Hey vc – just sent you a follow request
C-SPAN Alert: Oh snap! Florida has changed its primary and pushed it up to January 31st, 2012; prompting other states to change also. Hahaha… Iowa must be mad as heck.
Republicans probably don’t want the evangelical/conservative Iowans to have the first say. They’re gonna try to tamper down the wacky and crazy and hope the public buys it.
Excellent. Thanks Meta and DF I had emailed these cats earlier this week but I’m going to take a moment to tweet the tweetable.
it’s rather fun and predictable to see a Neocon like Bolton act that way
John Bolton Does His Best To Downplay Obama’s Killing Of Awlaki
Moments ago, speaking at the retirement ceremony for Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen, President Obama said American-born radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki took the lead in “planning efforts to murder innocent Americans” as head of external operations for al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Obama said it was a “major blow” to al Qaeda.
Former Bush U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, however, tried his hardest to downplay the significance of the Obama administration’s killing of Al-Awlaki in Yemen today, telling Fox News that we shouldn’t “read more into it than there is”:
BOLTON: At the same time, I think it’s important as individual Al Qaeda figures and other terrorists are killed that we not read more into it than there is. Consider this analogy if you were around in the 1920s and somebody said, my God, Vladimir Lenin is dead. The Bolsheviks will never recover from this. [...]
So while Al-Awlaki death is significant, I would not read cosmic consequences into it.
Bolton’s analogy is rather flawed, as Lenin died of natural causes ( http://www.biography.com/people/vladimir-lenin-9379007 ) after a period of of semi-retirement from politics, while Al-Awlaki was at the height of his power. Al-Awlaki had a hand in almost all of the high-profile terror attempts in recent years — he helped recruit Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the “underwear bomber,” exchanged emails with Fort Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Hasan, communicated with failed Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad, and directed the attempted bombing of cargo planes last year.
But as NBC News’ First Read noted this morning, “no president” in over 20 years “has had more foreign-policy successes happen under his watch than President Obama.” Yet, he’s “getting almost no credit from the American public.” Despite the killing of Osama Bin Laden and nearly two dozen other top terrorist, the dismantling of Al Qaeda, and the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi polls show the public still gives Republicans the edge on combating terrorism. That after President Bush failed to capture Bin Laden or even pursue him with much alacrity.
This is likely because conservative media personalities and Republican lawmakers consistently mislead the public on Obama’s foreign policy, suggesting he is weak on terror and maligning his stance as “leading from behind.” There has never been any basis in reality to their attacks, and even less so after the killing of Al-Awlaki. But Bolton’s performance on Fox this morning suggests that even this latest incident won’t make conservatives acknowledge reality.
Why do they pull all of these old Bush cronies from storage when PBO scores a victory on terrioism?
I hear ya cos. I guess Fran Townsend will be on every other segment on CNN for the next couple of days. Nauseating…..
like nails on a chalk board – to torture us.

VIDEO: Newt Gingrich Deceives On Stem Cell Research, Mocks Evolution
In a Q&A after his event yesterday to announce a “New Contract With America,” Newt Gingrich was asked if he would work to make “Christian social issues the law of the land,” by a questioner who cited stem cell research in particular.
Here was his response:
I am very much for adult stem cell research, and I am very much for stem cell research that comes from, for example, any device other than killing an embryo. But I am opposed to getting involved in a process of killing children in order to have research materials. And I think you’re finding, you look at what’s happening with stem cell research, we have less and less demand that you have anything except regular stem cells, because we’re learning how to use them. So I think that’s an ideological fight, rather than a scientific fight.
The bit about “killing children” is absurd ( http://stemcells.nih.gov/info/basics/basics3.asp)
According to the NIH, most embryos used are leftover from in vitro fertilization clinics, and have been designated for research with the “informed consent of the donors.” They never have any chance of becoming children because they’re never implanted in a womb.
And not only are there no dead children here. Gingrich’s claim about adult stem cells — the “regular” stem cells, he claims — is also way off. He’s engaging in classic hype that the religious right uses whenever this issue comes up — claiming that we don’t really need embryonic stem cells because adult stem cells are so wonderful that they can take care of everything. That would surprise the International Society for Stem Cell Research, which offers this statement on adult stem cell hype by Dr. David Scadden:
Adult stem cell therapies are powerful, but they are not as wide-ranging as claimed. They have a narrow record of disease types for which the therapy is extremely valuable, a success story that is enormously encouraging evidence for stem cell research leading to methods of positively affecting people’s lives. It took approximately 25 years between discovery and routine clinical application of adult stem cell therapy. It is not known how long it will take for embryonic stem cells to become a useful therapy or whether they will ever directly do so. However, it would be unwise to ignore the potential for either adult or embryonic stem cells to result in a meaningful new approach. Adult and embryonic stem cells are complementary subjects of research and studying them side by side offers the greatest potential to rapidly generate new therapies.
Sorry, Newt. And this is a guy who likes science, at least when it suits him.
Gingrich ends the latest clip with a lampooning of evolution — we’re talking Bishop Wilberforce-type stuff.
I always tell my friends who don’t believe in this stuff, fine, how do you think — we’re randomly gathered protoplasm? We could have been rhinoceroses, but we got lucky this week?
Evolution by natural selection is not a random process–though this is a standard creationist talking point. So Gingrich almost hit an anti-science trifecta here — all he had to do was snub global warming too. So close!
Got to read:) http://pmcarpenter.blogs.com/p_m_carpenters_commentary/2011/09/to-the-left-stop-helping-the-right.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+pmcarpenterscommentary+%28p+m+carpenter%27s+commentary%29
Shall we email this to the “King Bros” Steve and Peter???
http://www.facebook.com/groups/occupyasheville/ got a great thing starting here
http://jtrfranklin.wordpress.com/2011/09/30/the-unreality-of-the-1/ my blog.
Hey just askin’ any of you twitter folks hear back from any of the senators/reps? I have not. Never have. But it’d be kind of exciting if someone did.
No. Never hear back from any of them. But Roseanne Barr followed me today. LOLz. Weird.
Neither have I. Not even one, so I thought it was because I was doing something wrong. Reassuring to know that even when they don’t answer, we can still get the message through.
It’s like the push back I did to the ‘Obama joke’ on forwarded email. I wasn’t sure if it was received as NOBODY said a word, then 2 days ago the person who sent it to me admitted that she got my response. She was amazed that I said ‘so much’ and wondering how her friends would take it. She admitted that she had been too busy to read it, so I suggested she at least check out the CBC Awards video, and I reiterated that it wasn’t fair for people who do not know the President and what he is accomplishing to malign him in this way.
oh yes! I remember when you had written about doing that and I thought it was a really great thing to do. It’s the kind of immediate action one can take when you get some heinous email – glad you got a response!
Cowardly Democratic Senators Refuse To Raise Taxes On The Rich
Obama is doing exactly what many on the left asked for. He is telling the Senate to do something, and they are not listening. The problem isn’t one of presidential leadership. It is a lack of political courage on the part of some Democrats in the legislative branch. This exact scenario has been played out repeatedly in recent history. George W. Bush’s comprehensive immigration reform bill was killed by senators in his own party who feared that supporting the bill would hurt their reelection chances. The public option was killed by Senate Democrats who feared for their own political futures.
The fact that there are some Democrats who refuse to support increasing taxes on the wealthiest Americans despite the fact that the idea is overwhelmingly popular illuminates where the problem resides in our political system. Senators no longer depend on the president for their reelection. They raise their own money, and run their own campaigns. They don’t need the blessing of the president or the Democratic Party anymore. Corporate campaign cash and wealthy political donors have undercut a president’s power to persuade the Congress.
The next time somebody on the left grumbles about Obama’s leadership remind them that it was Senate Democrats who refused to tax the wealthy in an election year. The American people overwhelmingly support it, Obama has been traveling the country touting it, but a few Senate Democrats are going to defy the will of the people and this president and not vote to make the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share.
The activist left needs to redirect its ire away from Obama and towards those Democrats in the Senate who don’t realize that taxing the rich will help their reelection campaigns, and that beyond reelection, it’s the right thing to do.
It’s not Obama. It’s not the American people. The problem is the out of touch cowards in the Democratic caucus, who are betraying the will of the people and intentionally sacrificing the jobless by refusing to stand up and make the rich pay their fair share.
