Quick question: has anyone here at TOD attended any of the Occupy Wall street marches, or is planning to? I wonder if anyone saw voter registration tables at any of these events. I thought these present perfect opportunities to get attention focused on something very important and translating all this fervor into tangible movement forward. Cuz all fury and not effect on the ballot box renders all the quest for change moot.
Excellent Idea zizi,
I am in Los Angeles and was thinking about going on the weekend. This protest has to move to the ballot box because the people that they are protesting are not elected but their money controls the people we do elect.
Zizi, the ONLY person I’ve heard pushing for voter registration has been ‘Angry Black Lady’ on Twitter.. I know she was trying to coordinate folks to take voter reg cards w/ them if they went to the protests. The worst thing I read yesterday on twitter was a quote retweeted from someone that Naomi Klein gave a speech or a statement that voting didn’t change anything, protesting does. I was pissed & tweeted back that if that is their message they are fools. So I am very concerned that no one is concretely pushing voter regs out there at these protests.
Here is her quote, just found it at ‘Democracy Now”- they are who was tweeting her BS: Naomi Klein: Protesters Are Seeking Change in the Streets Because It Won’t Come From the Ballot Box
Heres the link to Democracy Now, who apparently is supporting this dumb crap: http://www.democracynow.org/2011/10/6/naomi_klein_protesters_are_seeking_change
Telling people that voting doesn’t work, or not to vote is about as ignorant as it gets.. and plays straight into the hands of the rightwing’s wishes.
And here is some wiki info on Ms. Klein, who I have to admit I’m surprised to find out- and somewhat dumbfounded is Canadian: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naomi_Klein
How can she tell folks in America to not vote? How do folks on the left take this bs seriously? This is right there with finding out yesterday (I didn’t know) that Glenn Greenwald doesn’t even live in America, but he sure does spend all his time criticizing the President.
But Sheri – that’s exactly what they want. They want people to burn off their anger in the streets, but to get demoralized while doing it. So, they won’t vote for President Obama, but they also won’t cast a vote against the Republicans, either. And in effect, they’ll repeat their “disappointed” actions in 2010, thereby solidifying the Republican mandate to do harm. Because the Republicans will just take their apathy and say they were angry at the President and that’s why they were in the streets, as evidenced by low voter turnout. These kids don’t realize how easy it will be for them to get used if they don’t own their movement quickly and vocally.
I don’t see why they can’t see this, when they are already being called “mobs” and “pinkos” by the right wing media, and the so-called “liberal media” is challenging the President to solve all their, as yet, unclear issues.
What these kids don’t understand is that there already is a movement out to push for the people – and that’s Organizing for America (OFA). They’ve been consistently pushing legislation, calling Congress people, raising money, registering voters – for the past three years. And the energy of these youth who are spending their days sleeping in the streets, could have been harnessed for actual results by them joining forces with OFA. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, and being hijacked by the likes of Ed Schultz and Dylan Ratigan, they could be pressuring Congress to pass the AJA or confirm the head of the Consumer Protection Agency. They could be registering voters. They could be educating themselves on what has already been done under President Obama, and pushing for more. They could be expressing outrage for the GOP obstruction to economic recovery, or pushing for the passage of DOMA or petitioning Congress using “We the People” to overturn Citizens United.
I’m not saying their isn’t a time for boots on the ground protests. But, there is real work to do, and they could have been doing that these past three weeks, in addition to having boots on the ground, and being used by the professional left celebrity-whores.
Thanks Theo for all that you said. I am with you, I feel this ‘protest’ could be one of great gains for ALL of us, if they were using their moments to DO something. I see they’re angry.. like the tea party, apparently.. but what do they want to accomplish other than have some folks on Wall Street jailed? And even then… why aren’t they pushing for some positive results, some real concret goals… such as getting Cordray confirmed for the Consumer Protection Agency – that the republicans are trying to block.. and are in fact trying to break up the agency so that it has almost no power whatsoever.
But what really blows my gasket is for anyone to be out there telling folks not to vote… and Ms. Klein from Canada- who has no effing vote in America anyway- ought to be ashamed, and why isn’t anyone calling her on this bs? folks are promoting her on twitter like she makes sense. I’m still waiting to see what Van Jones is doing/ what his efforts/ intentions are with this protest. A whole lotta people seem to be making themselves a little richer and a little more famouse off this thing.. but how the hell does that transfer into votes & legislation getting passed that benefit American people??
thank you so much for your comments, I’ve been really disturbed by this ‘distraction’ – I’m still of the mind as to why now? Why right when POTUS gets on the trail w/ his very concrete, very solid Jobs Bill- the streets suddenly fill w/ angry folks from the .. ‘left’? why not two summers ago when the tea baggers were running amok? Why not this whole entire summer- before the jobs bill… why NOW?
Off topic. Lawrence O’Donnell has pointed out that Herman “Herb” Cain who graduated from college in 1967 did not serve in the armed services or participate in the civil rights movement. I would say he was hardly a man of his times.
Did you see how he tried to claim he was in high school during the civil rights movement? I believe his father told him while he was in college to stay away from that movement and not get into trouble because he was 18yrs old and going to jail would hurt his future. People like Herb Cain who benefited from the movement now things he could have achieved what he has without it because he did all the right things. Herb would never have made it to CEO without those that marched, went to jail, got bitten by dogs, hosed, etc., for him.
Bill, Herman Cain didn’t just graduate from college, not just any ol’ college, but MOREHOUSE COLLEGE, the alma mater of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I find it hard to believe that at Morehouse, Cain was unaware of civil rights issues.
PELOSI: BOEHNER’S CONGRESS WORKS LESS
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday slammed John Boehner (Ohio), her Republican successor to the Speaker position, for not working Congress hard enough.
“We maybe worked people too hard, I don’t know,” Pelosi said, criticizing Boehner for only keeping Congress in session for “about 210 days since [Republicans] took the majority.”
Boehner’s House schedule “doesn’t look like the schedule that we had,” Pelosi told Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC.
Pelosi, who held the Speaker position from 2007 until 2011, when the GOP took the majority in the House, noted that setting the schedule was up to the current Speaker.
“I don’t control the schedule, I’m not the Speaker,” she said. “But this schedule this year is a schedule that we’ve never seen before, two weeks in, one week out, like that.”
It fits that people who want to dismantle government and have less government would decide they didn’t need to work that hard or much. It seems there must be someway to use their schedule relaxation against them.
They don’t care about you. They care about getting more vacation time. They increased their days off by ______ number of days since taking control of Congress.
I would think that would upset the people out of work they are against.
Speaker Boehner’s & Majority Leader Cantor’s “work” schedule……
Two weeks on, one week off in shorter 2011 House schedule
Repugs are lazy spendthrifts. How they got the reputation of being hardworking conservatives who are fiscally responsible is beyond me. I think their rep is the biggest hoax in America political history. Hope the America people runs ’em outta town.
This is why the United States is doomed (6/30/11)
The GOP response to the jobs report: The Earth is flat and two plus two equals five
The Hill reports the House Republican response to Friday morning’s distressing jobs report.
House Republicans pinned the blame for Friday’s disappointing jobs report squarely on the White House, saying the Obama administration’s “over-taxing, over-regulating and over-spending” has stifled economic growth.
“One look at the jobs report should be enough to show the White House it’s time to get serious about cutting spending and dealing with our ailing economy,” Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said.
How many blatant untruths can a Republican speaker of the House stuff into one sentence? Quite a few!
O/T. …….but not: Have to say this–White House in pink. WHY wasn’t it GOLD in September???? September is childhood cancer month. The Obamas love children SO much. Talk about raising awareness???!!!!!
This is a wonderful video From the Office of Democratic Minority Whip Steny Hoyer

When we Make It In America, America’s families will make it too.
THIS IS THE CLEAREST SIGN THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA’S ROLL OUT OF THE AMERICAN JOBS ACT IS WORKING
John Boehner said that? Really?
Greg Sargent (Washington Post): John Boehner has a new line he’s trying out to justify the Republican House’s rejection of Barack Obama’s jobs bill: “We’re legislating. He’s campaigning. It’s very disappointing.”
I love 4:45. PBO does a little kimbo. So cute.
Hahaha, just remember having a picture like that on your wall and going all “oh, yeah, that´s when I met POTUS” :D
…saw too late to change. Imagine. I meant imagine, not remember of course. Bad Friday afternoon English, bad.
I had to replay that little snippet over and over – it’s so cute, and exactly what a father of two little girls would do. He’s simply marvelous.
I think i backed it up and played it about 4 -5 times. He is so funny.

SPEAKER BOEHNER AND THE “DO NOTHING” CONGRESS
By the Numbers: 273 Days of the Republican Do-Nothing Jobs Agenda
Today marks the 273rd day of Republican control of the House of Representatives. In 273 days, they have not passed a single bill to create jobs. Instead, House Republicans have repeatedly voted to end Medicare (while providing tax breaks to Big Oil and companies that ship jobs overseas), passed legislation that destroys nearly 2 million jobs (that’s 10,000 jobs lost every day), and pointlessly manufactured crisis after crisis–creating economic uncertainty and hurting small businesses and the middle class.
