call to action!

From Donna Dem:

This evening the Senate will vote on S. 1549: American Jobs Act of 2011.
This bill will provide tax relief for American workers and businesses, to put workers back on the job while rebuilding and modernizing America, and to provide pathways back to work for Americans looking for jobs.
PLEASE TAKE 5 MINUTES AND TWEET OR CALL OR EMAIL OR FAX YOUR US SENATOR TODAY & DEMAND THEIR SUPPORT FOR THIS BILL.
FIND YOUR SENATOR HERE

Need to send a fax but have no access to a fax machine: Send your fax to donnadem4obama@gmail.com and I will fax it on your behalf.
We need all hands on deck today TOD Family so let’s get busy – we need this bill to pass tonight!
****
Greg Sargent: Out of touch Senate to vote down Obama’s jobs bill today: We already know that the Senate will not muster anything close to the 60 votes that are necessary to overcome a GOP filibuster when it votes on Obama’s jobs bill tonight. That’s a no-brainer. What’s more to the point is that we don’t even know if a simple majority of the Senate will vote for it — even though the plan and its provisions have solid public support.
That’s because of uniform GOP opposition, yes, but it’s also because some Senate Dems are still wavering in their support for the jobs bill because of the tax hikes on the rich and other provisions. If Dem Senate leaders can’t prevent defections, and can’t muster a majority for the bill, Republicans will be able to argue that there’s meaningful bipartisan opposition to the it, perhaps blunting Obama’s message that the GOP is the only obstacle to the majority’s desire for progress on jobs — a message he intends to continue taking on the road through the end of the year.

The key provisions in the jobs bill have strong public support. They are backed by majorities of moderates and independents. Unemployment is basically a national emergency. Yet we’re now at the point where we don’t even know if a simple majority of the Senate will support a sensible, balanced measure to deal with that emergency — Dems can only afford to lose two defectors — that contains ideas that both parties have supported in the past.

    Thanks Chips!

    Have a productive day everyone.

“President Obama’s top campaign adviser said in a memo Monday — the eve of the Senate vote on Obama’s jobs bill — that Congress will continue to suffer politically if the bill is defeated.

David Axelrod said in a campaign memo that a majority of Americans believe another recession is coming or already here, and voters will punish Congress for failing to stop it.

“So as members of Congress take up the American Jobs Act this week they need to understand that their failure to focus on what matters most to Americans is why disapproval for Congress is at a historic high – 80 percent,” Axelrod wrote, citing a CBS/New York Times poll.

Using a slew of similar poll numbers favoring Obama, Axelrod wrote that the $447 billion jobs act is attracting more support as Obama has traveled around the country selling it.

“The more people know about the American Jobs Act; the more they hear the president talking about it; the more they want Congress to pass the plan,” Axelrod wrote.”

Called and was told that she supports the bill, and would make every effort to be there to cast her vote. The person I spoke to asked me where I was calling from. I informed her, but I also reminded her (as I always do now when I’m calling from outside of my state) that Senator Shaheen is there representing all of the people of the US and not just NH. The young lady I spoke with was very pleasant to talk to and I commended her for it .

Anyone have that full list of all Democrats who are undermining President Obama and America’s unemployed by voting no? we need to send these obstinate Dems and goper’s a message that we are watching what they are up to

    • October 11, 2011 at 9:30 am

Democrats who will vote no or are leaning no include Sens. Joe Manchin (W.Va.), Jon Tester (Mont.) and Ben Nelson (Neb.). They are up for reelection next year. These blue dogs infuriate me.

“Records show senior White House officials met with Romney advisers on health care law – @NBCNews

…Records, gleaned from White House visitor logs reviewed by NBC News, show that senior White House officials had a dozen meetings in 2009 with three health-care advisers and experts who helped shape the health care reform law signed by Romney in 2006, when the Republican presidential candidate was governor of Massachusetts. One of those meetings, on July 20, 2009, was in the Oval Office and presided over by President Barack Obama, the records show.

“The White House wanted to lean a lot on what we’d done in Massachusetts,” said Jon Gruber, an MIT economist who advised the Romney administration on health care and who attended five meetings at the Obama White House in 2009, including the meeting with the president. “They really wanted to know how we can take that same approach we used in Massachusetts and turn that into a national model.”

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44854320/ns/politics-

Two things: 1) It would have been cool for NBC to mention that since entering office, this White House makes their visitor logs readily available for all to see unlike other administrations and 2) how’s Romney going to flip this one? Will he say they weren’t his advisers?

      1) It would have been cool for NBC to mention that since entering office, this White House makes their visitor logs readily available for all to see unlike other administrations    You expect real journalism.

Of course, it would have been cool AND the right thing to do. Precisely why it didn’t happen. Have we ever gotten Bush’s visitor logs? Cheney’s (the real president under Bush the son) visitor logs? What a joke. They BOTH should be in jail.

    • 46 57andFemale
      October 11, 2011 at 9:59 am

Mittens’ excuse is that it should be a state plan, not a federal plan. That being said, it’s pretty ‘socialist’.

My sister-in-law would not have affordable coverage in MA without this plan and she’s extremely pleased with her coverage and her options.

        October 11, 2011 at 12:30 pm

And may I say, my brother-in-law and sister-in-law are dyed in the wool Republicans. It’s Obama’s fault that my 75 year-old brother-in-law is being priced out house painting jobs by “Mexicans”. the sister-in-law is an evangelical nut. So they will hate Obamacare, all the while praising Mittens-care.

I’m from N.C., I have been emailing Sen. Hagan all week-end, I call yesterday and left a message for her. I will be emailing and calling again. If anyone want to know why this President has had such a tough time, we know the Republicans will not support the bill, that’s a given. We know why, it’s all about 2012. But you have Democrats who know that people are suffering, they know that this would help the economy, and you see that most Americans support the bill. But still you have Democrats worry about big oil and millionaires. Don’t they get why people are protesting all over this country? It is time to give the middle class a bailout. But these sorry ass Democrats. I’m getting ready to call Sen. Hagan office right now.

      October 11, 2011 at 9:59 am

If Greg Sargent is right that the Dems might not even have a majority voting for the jobs bill, it just makes you want to cry. These Dems are despicable, conclusively dooming the AJA and any hope for that needed boost to the economy, and undermining Obama’s presidential campaign. Beyond disgusting.

      • 64 Debz
        October 11, 2011 at 10:41 am

Why are these Dems so sure they will be re-elected if they vote against jobs for their constituents? We are always hearing about “polls” yet they ignore the polls that say people are angry with Congress. I also say if the President isn’t re-elected most of these Dems won’t be re-elected either.

        • October 11, 2011 at 12:08 pm

I sent a tweet to Manchin, Tester, Ben Nelson, and Lieberman questioning them as to whether they have any unemployed people in their states and informing them that all polls show strong public support for the AJA. I think Manchin, Tester, and Nelson think they have to vote against the AJA because they think the majority in their states are anti-Obama. What they fail to understand is that by voting FOR the AJA, when the economy begins to improve, people’s attitudes can change. As the guy in Greg Sargent’s article said, their fates are tied to PBO’s, and not supporting the AJA provides ammo to the republicans to paint PBO as a weak and ineffective leader when that’s not really the problem. The problem is scare bluedogs who place more emphasis on being re-elected and pleasing the rich than they do on doing the right thing for the people.

TrumpDog, I could be wrong, but I don’t think the blame will go to the President , not this time. Once the vote is taken and we know who voted against it, then we all should contact them and ask them to explain why they voted against it.

Okay I called Jim Webb’s office and spoke to an aide. According to the aide, Webb still hasn’t put out any public statements one way or another. I asked the aide whether he’ll be putting out a statement at some point today and the aide said that he didn’t know. Of course I re-iterated my desire that Webb voted “yes” on behalf of the unemployed Americans . He said he would pass my message and then asked me for my city/zipcode, and I gave him my zip. I then asked him whether Webb was planning to vote “no?” he responded that he didn’t know.

What is the point of these aides?!?

sorry but I have always had this impression from his actions, facial expressions and speeches (e.g against Affarmative Action) that Senator Jim Webb has a personal grudge against President Obama and that it extends back from the time when they were both members of the senate

      • 88 a4alice
        October 11, 2011 at 12:00 pm

        I sent him this email:

To the HON. Senator Jim Webb:

        Dear Sir:

Here in Minnesota we are looking forward with great anticipation to the passage of the AJA. Why here are just four great points on how the AJA will directly affect the good folks of Minnesota:

        1. The AJA will help small businesses hire and grow: cutting the payroll tax in half for 120,000 of Minnesota’s small employers for the first $5 million in wages;

        2. At least $608 million for Minnesota highways, transit, rail and aviation, supporting at least 7,900 local jobs;

        3. $274.5 million for Minnesota public school construction and renovation, supporting as many as 3,600 jobs;

        4. Finally the AJA prevents layoffs of our teachers, police officers and firefighters
helping the state and city governments avoid and reverse as many as 3,600 layoffs with $504 million.

When I received a response from our wonderful Congresswoman Betty McCollum she helped point out these things which are important to Minnesotans. I am sure the people of your state are also looking forward to the prosperity that will come with passing the Jobs Act. I hope you will now urge your fellow Republican colleagues to whole heartedly support the American Jobs Act.

        Sincerely

        Alice Mapes

I just realized that when I was at the 2008 Denver Convention I visited Lincoln High School to recruit a student who’d been ID’d as a great potential for college and our pilot retention program. She came from a really poor background and did not have lots of support from her circle of friends. She went on to become a B+ student at a very good school, taking science and math courses. Amazingly strong woman. PBO picked the perfect place for that speech!!

THIS from Sen. Pat Toomey’s office:

Thank you for contacting me about the American Jobs Act. I appreciate hearing from you.

Like many Pennsylvanians, I believe that our nation is facing serious challenges, including high unemployment and disappointing economic growth. Clearly, policies coming out of Washington in recent years are not working and are failing to live up to the promises made by those who believe that more spending beyond our means and more regulation are the answers. Regrettably, the failure of these policies is a setback to many Americans who are facing bleak job prospects and are struggling to make ends meet. We therefore need to pursue a different path that will sustainably boost economic growth and encourage more investment, hiring, and prosperity without Washington unnecessarily standing in the way.

As you know, on September 8, 2011, President Obama gave an address to Congress that included some proposals that will help spur hiring like cutting federal red tape on job creators and expanding trade opportunities. I look forward to working with the President and my Senate colleagues on these efforts. That said, none of these items are in his “American Jobs Act.” Instead, the President’s bill calls for hundreds of billions of dollars in increased spending, even though he tried massive stimulus spending before and it failed to lower unemployment. His legislation unfortunately appears to be more of the same and, even worse, it includes tax hikes that will hurt job creation and have rightfully raised objections with lawmakers from both parties. And while the President has called on Congress to pass his jobs bill immediately, even members of his own party have expressed concerns about it and Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has decided not to call up the bill for debate until other matters are addressed. In the meantime, I look forward to reviewing the American Jobs Act further and working on policies that will positively address our nation’s serious economic challenges.

Thank you again for your correspondence. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future if I can be of assistance.

    Sincerely,

    Pat Toomey

Just ask Toomey why are the American people protesting all over this country? Because they are tired of B.S. like this.

yowza. Sent him exactly the same letter that I sent webb above. Got some good facts in there from my congresswoman Betty McCollum so I just use it as a way to point out how the AJA will help Minnesota.

‘I look forward to reviewing the American Jobs Act further and working on policies that will positively address our nation’s serious economic challenges.’

While he is still ‘looking forward’ to a start in doing his job, Americans are suffering. HE HASN’T READ THE BILL YET?? He should have to answer why it is taking so long for him to familiarize himself with the AJA – a document that has been available for weeks! .Does he care that millions of Americans are suffering? He needs to be reminded that Congress has had MONTHS to work on policies and the AJA will ‘positively address our nation’s serious economic challenges.’

    Tweet this is wavering Democrats.

Lawrence O’Donnell does a nice job of explaining Senator Reid’s tax proposal to pay for the AJA. Majority Leader Reid tries to rewrite the tax code and make it fairer. I just don’t see how any Democrat could be against the American Jobs Act. Harry Reid has gone out of his way to make the tax responsibility fair focusing on incomes OVER one million dollars. This is a no brainer.

    Sam Stein tweet:

THIS INFURIATES ME. The AJA reduces deficit by $3B over next 10 years!! Cannot WAIT to see this man leave the Senate.

I think he plans to vote “yes” today to bring the bill to the floor for debate. And then he will vote “no.” The important thing for now is getting the bill on the floor for the debate – which is what the procedural vote at 2PM today will accomplish.

The media is trying to confuse the issue as well. They will not give you correct information.

Ms, Chipsticks, can we do a formal Senate rollcall tally on this site above this entry (like the thermometer one you did on the fundraising)?

I do not know how easy it is but you could possibly include a countdown clock besides the roll call indicatitng hw long before time of vote.

Using this we demand a specific answer from each individual Dem’s office asking them HOW they intend to vote and the reason WHY those voting no are giving.

Based on the answer from each Dem Senate office we can then focus our collective push and ask them WHOSE side they are on if not on the side of the unemployed given the turmoil already happening on the street?? Can we tell their office that we are going to flash their answer for the world to see so be pricise as WHY you are voting against more jobs

Losing Senator Byrd and his seat being taken up by that Manchin character is a contrast that serves to undermine the Democratic agenda.

I get the feeling that senator Manchin thinks he is going somewhere higher in public office so I hope those who call him remind his office that we are watching him and that the Democratic Party’s most loyal base (specifically AA) will remember how he worked hard to undermine President Obama’s agenda

Manchin has a big grudge against PBO for some reason – I spotted it at Sen. Byrd’s memorial service. I cannot stand Manchin.

So the “no” votes seem to come down to people’s personal grudges with the President – not their desire to help the American People. WOW…

Add my Senator Claire McCaskill to the waving Dems! I called and her rep said she is still reading the bill. I told her that I called three weeks ago and got the same response. It was very disappointing. I actually appreciated my Republican Senator Roy Blunt response so much better. Of course he is a no vote but his rep said he is working to get bi-partisan support for some Trade Bills that are coming up to vote this week. I don’t know how truthful she was but it was better than the crap McCaskill is spilling. I explained how Dems are on tricky groud especially with many of the AA that I speak with. It is clear to me and many others they no longer represent our interest and what is affecting our lives today and not 50 years ago.

RE: Senate action to support AJa
I firmly believe we should target only the 3-4 dem senators who are resisting and ALL repugs regardless of what state they serve. I would like us to focus on the repug/traitors every day/all the time. Just my thoughts.

I emailed my Senator’s Boxer and Feinstein. They are both “yes” votes, so I thanked them for their support and asked that they help get the other Senators on board too. That we who voted them into office is watching very closely.

Good morning todville.Have not read through the thread yet but will give my update.
Re Donna’s call to action at the top I contacted the following:

Boehner-left message telling him Amreicans are hurting and need him to support the AJA.

Cantor- left same message. Clerk says she will def pass it on..thanks for my concern(surprising)

Landrieu-Clerk says she is a definite yes vote on the procedural motion tonight.

Casey-He is a yes although he would prefer to have the bill broken up.Had to reply we don’t always get
what we prefer hence the wrd compromise.
    Shuler-Don’t yet know.

    Hagen-Plans to support,Yes
    Manchin-left message

  38. October 11, 2011 at 12:17 pm

I called Senators Isakson and Chambliss. Both aides were very nice. I also sent an email to Senator Isakson, but when I tried to send an one to Senator Chambliss, I received a configuration error message. I reported it to his aide when I called the office and she thanked me for letting her know about it. There may be many more in GA who are trying unsuccessfully to email Senator Chambliss. I hope the aide gets the configuration issue resolved because Chambliss needs to be pressured A LOT.

    Good Morning,

I’m pretty “old skool” so I have been faxing and emailing my senators and reps in California and have done so again this morning. BUT I did just set up a Twitter account this morning and think I have figured out how to send a “Tweet”. So here’s my first “Tweet” EVER to those vacillating or planning to vote no that have a twitter account :

“NO” is NOT legislation but The American Jobs Act IS – Pass the Jobs Bill!

Keeep up the good work everyone.

Well I just got off the phone with both my Senators and I am so upset I am in tears. Baucus is unsure and Tester is probably a no. I was in tears by the end of both calls. This is why it is hard for me to call. I get so emotional I can’t say what I really want to say. Now I am very depressed. I don’t understand the Dems.

    • October 11, 2011 at 1:16 pm

Please don’t let them send you into a state of depression, Marilyn. I was also very emotional about the AJA when I called my two republican senators’ offices. We’ll get through this. I read a Reuters article a few minutes ago that states that PBO is not giving up. We must be as determined as he is, and this means that we must continue to PRESS ON.

The important thing is that you made the call. Your emotions are genuine and it is good for them to be made aware of how people are really feeling. Please don’t let it weigh you down, upset or not you made your voice heard.

I am curious as to what precludes them from supporting this measure……..for the life of me I can’t imagine voting against the American people.

    HERE WE GO!!!!!

I just posted this on an article at latimes.com – in between everything else –

“President Obama’s poll numbers are still higher than everyone in Congress. They are low for Obama, but they’re also higher than any Democratic President since Harry Truman at this time of his presidency. Yes, even higher than President Clinton.
Congressional Dems might want to take that into consideration. Their poll numbers would probably go UP if they manage to finally grow a spine, and stand with the POTUS.”

I just emailed my 2 Senators, Casey and Toomey of Pennsylvania. I cannot say I was very nice, at least not sweet. I told them I don’t feel like sugarcoating the issue. We pay your salary. Now they can take it as it was meant and just do the job and support us. Here’s my letter:

Support S. 1549: American Jobs Act of 2011

Dear Sen. Robert Casey and Sen. Patrick Toomey:
    I support S. 1549: American Jobs Act of 2011 because…

“Simply because there are and have been millions out of work for a very long time, losing hope. Casey, you know better than Toomey, and Toomey, you need to stop being a hateful republican…..lots of folk in your constituency would vote against their own interests to further your obstructionist agenda. I read your beliefs during the 2010 midterms, and I don’t agree with them, but a job is a job, and this is the most important thing facing the majority of Americans to date. I’m just being totally honest, and do not feel like sugarcoating the issue to spare anyone’s ego. You both are grown men…..you need to get a clue about what we out here need, while we pay your salary. Do your job.”
