I’m living in the Midwest now (moved from Florida), so I’m pretending that’s a scene of PBO’s motorcade as it comes down my street this cold winter to visit me!

Just want to repeat one paragraph and request that all of you consider the positive message that I’m trying to use to encourage #ows #99%ers (us) to take the lessons learned from the horrid obstruction of the #KOCHMAFIAGOP, since Jan 2009, and channel their energy from the street to the ballot box. Anything you can do to help will certainly help America and President Obama.

“I’m on a little campaign to urge the #ows folk to realize that the maximum power us 99%ers have is to create the logistics for the largest voter turnout in the history of our Republic. After getting gas’d and club’d and jail’d NOTHING CHANGES unless we do a “Tunisia” in America on 6 Nov 2012. The CHANGE began in the streets and town squares but it HAPPENS at the ballot box.”

” The CHANGE began in the streets and town squares but it HAPPENS at the ballot box.”

Thanks Bobfr for this wise call. I totally agree with you. If OWS remains simply a street protest it’s almost guaranteed that none of the things they advocate will ever be accomplished.

That student loan news is really big. I remember them chasing me for years and years and years, always adding interest………This makes it more humane. It’s been really nasty sometimes for people; calls and threats. I never could understand it, really – until I figured out home much the banks had to do with it.

    • October 26, 2011 at 8:38 pm

“I never could understand it, really – until I figured out home much the banks had to do with it.”

THIS is why the GOP opposed the dems move to take the middle men OUT of the student loan business and allow students to borrow directly from the government. Once again, they were protecting the banks. Dems also need to know that, according to TPM, PBO’s EO to decrease student loan interest now is entirely legal. In 2007, Congress passed a bill that would allow student loans to be decreased by 5% in 2014. PBO’s EO only implements it sooner than scheduled.

Mittens just oozes of slime..I will work my arse off for our guy…but one thing I can say about the American people, at least a good number of them, they can smell BS a mile away and their sh*tometer is going all sorts of crazy on Mittens. He has no soul, he has no convictions, principles..I mean less than 20 yrs ago he was saying he would be a better friend to “the gays” than Kennedy..that he wasn’t a Reagan lover- and now the COMPLETE opposite of what he believed just 20 years ago. This guy is near or at 60 so this was not some young hippie speaking. I just don’t see how the media cannot hold him accountable for what HE said 20 yrs ago. I know they want a horse race and if you were to ask them they would say oh the public already knows this—-er, no they don’t. Mittens LOST the republican primary, the general voting public never got a chance to *kick the tires*. Unbelievable.

I may be in the minority but I think democrats should refrain from attacking Romney too much for now. Let him enter the primaries with some strenght. Because if he’s too weakened the GOP establishment could decide to abandon him and push for a stronger candidate.

    • October 26, 2011 at 8:40 pm

I agree. Romney is slime, and republicans should know it, too, especially when the Heritage Foundation says it. The HF is helping dems destroy Romney’s credibility.

Erin is a class ‘A’ idiot. I tried watching her show. It’s all blame PBO; bash PBO; then blame PBO again. Blame him for Wall Street regulations. Blame him for big business not hiring despite sitting on tons of cash. Accuse him of being anti-business. Apparently she’s engaged to a Citibank or some wall street executive so all day everyday she carries water for the GOP and for Wall Street.

She is obviously either not very bright nor informed or a Tepug plant.

Those cuts come one way or other, by the super committee or the trigger.

PBO put those Republicans in a box and they don’t have any box-cutters!!!!

    • October 26, 2011 at 10:03 pm

That downgrade nonsense came from BoA, which is struggling with its own issues and wants to distract attention from itself. If there is no agreement, the deficit is cut automatically, which is was supposed to one of the main concerns voiced about the original downgrade. The president won’t be distracted because he knew this was coming and did not imagine for one moment that an agreement would be reached by that so-called super committee. No matter what happens he will have shown that the U.S. is serious about the deficit and then, effectively, tuck that issue away while he focuses even more intensively on jobs. He will also veto any extension of the Bush tax cuts and that will be the biggest possible boost to the economy.

This video must lead those in charge to realize that it must not go any further than this. I’m almost 65. I’ve seen the 50s, 60s, 70s – much of it, first hand.

The only comment I’ve directed toward President Obama is this one simple tweet:

      Our4thEstate Bobfr
      @BarackObama @whitehouse @pfeiffer44 @davidaxelrod Please view this video youtu.be/OZLyUK0t0vQ I trust you will do what’s best

I know he is concerned. I certainly do not expect him to show up at any #ows demonstration. But, he has the skill to crystallize all the very very dangerous implications of a person down, being helped and having the police intentionally throw an explosive/gas device into them as they try to help. It’s not ‘Kent State,’ not even close – but it’s on that trajectory and it must not accelerate.

        October 26, 2011 at 8:23 pm

I’m almost 64 and respectfully disagree. The protests MUST go on!! The only progress we have made has been made through protests. The wealthy do not and will not CHOOSE to give up any of their gains. And we’re already changing the dialogue. We need to use a multi-method, multi-variable approach. TOD is a part of this, DK is a part of this, OWS is a part of this, the Repeal Walker movement is a part of this. This is too big and too important an endeavor to channel into one narrow little channel. This is the task and the challenge of the moment. We’re at a major turning point, a major crisis. I’ve been protesting in Wisconsin since last winter and will continue to do so. While I love and support my President.

        • 70 Bobfr
          October 26, 2011 at 11:20 pm

I didn’t reject ‘protesting’ and that’s not the point of my comments. Violent confrontation is of no value – that is the point of the comment. And, any further acceleration of what is depicted in the video must be prevented. Burning 14th St in DC again or Watts again or …. is not the path to the consequences that must be effected for the 99% to regain the promise of America. 99% turnout on 6 Nov 2012 is the way that that reclaiming of the promise of America for every citizen can and must happen.

Folk can protest all they like, but if you don’t get to the ballot box in record numbers all the protesting will be for naught.

We need 12 months of the most sophisticated voter turnout logistics planning and implementation ever seen in any democracy in the world.

That is how we take down the #KOCHMAFIA. That is how we shape policy and legislation. Any distraction from a massive victory on 6 Nov 2012 will almost certainly guarantee a fate worse than 2001-2009.

The optics (and representative of one of the choices for voters, methinks):

    – On Leno, President Obama paints a picture of a First Lady who wants to hand out “fruit and raisins” to the Trick or Treaters.

    – Around the same time, Herb Cain has an ad out with a guy who’s teaching children how “cool” it is to smoke.

Good evening everyone. Good to see that news about student loans. I have been out of college for a little over ten years and still have them. I only took out what I needed to supplement grants and scholarships, but dang that interest adds up fast. I have to pay over $200 a month and that barely makes a dent in the interest. I will have my car paid off before I have that paid off. Anyway good to hear the news hopefully I can get a payment that is a lot lower.

      zizi,

you are absolutely correct. and, he’s set up the SuperCommittee. With a firm ending of the Iraq War, he just cut the legs out from under those who wanted to stand for no dollars from defense – EVER.

And, look what is happening, very quietly, on the Voter Suppression 2012 front.

from Texas, to the good news out of Ohio, and the Justice Department going ‘ I’ don’t think so’ in so many other states under the purview.

you’ve got Republicans lying that they have a jobs plan, when they don’t.

the student loan thing is HUGE; especially when you have an assclown like Paul Ryan talking about how we can’t ‘afford’ Pell Grants, but keeping tax breaks for the rich is ok.

the GOP keeps showing their azzes all over the place.

Ryan is what my father, a white Wisconsin farmer and laborer, used to refer to as Whiny White Boys. They are in every small town, the sons of privilege – cocky, superior, condescending know-it-alls. And they are often bullies who run and hide behind their daddies when challenged by the REAL guys.

    • 112 Ladyhawke
      October 26, 2011 at 8:45 pm

Tell it zizi. I have heard comments lately from Mitch McConnell, Speaker In Name Only John Boehner, Eric Cantor and now Paul Ryan where they sound completely tone deaf and out of touch with reality. President Obama has rendered into babbling idiots. They are incoherent. They are out of touch. They have overplayed their hand.

President Obama is drinking their milkshake and making arses out of them. They had their opportunity to act like adults. Congress has a 9% approval rating. I wonder how much lower the approval rating has to go for them to get with the program. President Obama told the GOP during the debt limit debate that he was taking his agenda directly to the American people. President Obama is winning because he is on the right side of the issue. And the Republicans are crying in their beer.

The obstruction of the Republican Party is un-American and un-patriotic. I know this because if the roles were reversed, that’s exactly what the Republican Party would be saying about the Democrats 24X7. You can just imagine the outrage. But of course, Democrats would never do what the GOP is doing.

      • 113 jacquelineoboomer
        October 26, 2011 at 9:01 pm

Sad to say, but I don’t think any of the Republicans are looking like they’re going to be getting with the program any time soon. Makes one wonder why, but if your “bosses” are the corporations and Koch brothers, why care about what’s best for the American people?

Oh, God, I hope we vote these b——s out.

    • October 26, 2011 at 9:00 pm

      ZIZI,

I found these comments over at Washington Monthly in a post about Paul Ryan and thought of you:

      exlibra on October 26, 2011 3:32 PM:

Pore, pore Goopers… For almost 3 yrs they’ve been abusing Obama every which way, and got so used to his always trying to be accommodating and to his yielding when he thought he could, that it came as a nasty surprise when he finally realized that trying to appease the SOBs was a pointless waste of breath.

They’d be well advised to pay attention to how abusive behavior plays out in domestic situations. The abused person will, for years, try to pacify the abuser. And then, something snaps and you’d better learn how to live without sleep, because you may find yourself in a burning bed on shot in your own bathroom while shaving. To the cheering of every jury in the country except, possibly, other abusers.

      …………………

      Kathryn on October 26, 2011 3:25 PM:

Others have said it but I’ve had my doubts; however, beginning to think the GOP is getting worried by Pres. Obama’s push to reach directly to the voters, bypassing the do nothing congress, Ryan is sounding strident. McConnell is probably stocking up on brass knuckles this very minute.

      http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/political-animal/2011_10/what_is_wrong_with_paul_ryan033100.php#comments

      • October 26, 2011 at 10:11 pm

Disagree strongly with the idea in these comments that the president took abuse and “accommodated” the R’s. He spent two years getting just about everything he wanted out of Congress and then he played the GOP like a violin to defuse the debt issue and pivot to jobs. It may seem like the R’s have had control of the House forever, but it’s been less than a year and he already has them on the ropes. They, like many in the media, made the mistake of underestimating Barack Obama.

I didn’t know if this was an attempt at comedy writing or straight reporting, but the facts are real and disturbing and ugly to me. Mediaite posted a story that was on FBN, where anchor Bolling (?) was just drooling over Perry killing a bunch of birds on his hunting trip with Steve “impeach Obama” King in Iowa. King called into the show to say how proud he was of Perry for putting 17 holes in a bunch of pheasants, and Perry kept calling killing stuff his “golf”, his attempt to skewer Obama, I guess. Golf doesn’t kill, and I guess that is part of the problem, according to Perry. The whole thing just made me nauseous—-I like pheasants a lot more than I like Perry. And get Perry out of our sight. I can’t stand these Repub candidates. They’re all just gross and disgusting.

I think OWS has a huge problem. Since there appears to be violence happening now, they have got to get a coherent message and a definitive PLAN of how to get their message implemented. People I know are starting to figure them as homeless and pointless. This is the moment to get very clear about what they want and how they intend to do it.

      • October 26, 2011 at 8:48 pm

Your comment is why I am glad PBO didn’t insert himself more than he has into these protests. Knowing the republicans, if he said any more than what he’s already said, they’d demonize him, use it to raise campaign funds, and start hollering about states’ rights. I trust these Occupy movements to handle their own business when conflicts occur.

    • October 26, 2011 at 9:03 pm

It’s troubling if any attempt to help them organize and focus is viewed as co-optation. Yet some of the very ones warning them against being co-opted are DOING just that, eg., Cenk, Moore, Ratagin. Kenny Mack is so clear-eyed about that, and so, of course, he is being criticized by the usual pseudo-progressives. What’s really maddening about the PL consciousness is that I still consider myself a progressive. I have even in younger years been guilty of purity shortsightedness. So watching this situation unfold is a painful reminder of how easy it is to be so blinded—even by laudable beliefs but a lack of strategic sophistication—that one helps generate electoral outcomes that hurt one’s own interests, and the interests of the country in the aggregate.

I understand their emotion, but they are appearing aimless now. Got to have a vision and a plan on how to get there. I sincerely believe 1/2 of OWS wants to abolish capitalism.

U.S. EMBASSIES BUYING PRESIDENT OBAMA’S BOOKS

Today, State Department Spokeswoman Toria Nuland responded to a question from a reporter about a report stating embassies have purchased books by President Obama for their libraries and to give to contacts.

    ==========================

QUESTION: There’s this report about the State Department buying a total of $70,000 worth of books written by the President and giving them to libraries around the world, giving them as gifts. Do you have any comment about that or explanation as to how that happened?

MS. NULAND: Well, first of all, let me say that for decades we’ve had a program where our embassies overseas have used books to engage key audiences in discussion about U.S. policy, our system, our foreign policy. And in fact, for decades every embassy has had its own budget to buy books on U.S. history, culture, politics, which they can either put in embassy libraries or they can give to host country libraries or they can give to their contacts to try to deepen understanding of the United States. But it’s the embassies themselves that make the decisions what American books to buy, and they make these decisions based on the interest in the country where they are. But these are not decisions that are made in Washington and they’re not decisions that are directed by Washington. And finally, I would say that all of these book purchases are done in strict accordance with government procurement standards. The records are available for anybody to see.

QUESTION: The people who are critical of this would say that it has not been done for previous presidents. Is that correct? And then also, even if the motives were worthy, it doesn’t look good to have taxpayer dollars, they would say, being spent on books written by the President of the United States, who then would earn royalties on those books.

MS. NULAND: Well, first, I think if you went through some of these embassy libraries and some of the lists over these decades, you’re going to find books in these libraries from administration figures from both political parties. And as I said, this is a longstanding practice to allow embassies to buy books, to put them out in libraries, put them out – give them to contacts, which they think will help deepen understanding of the U.S. political system, of U.S. political figures and leaders, of U.S. history, U.S. culture. So this is standard practice, and it’s designed to help the world understand us better. And it is conducted in a bipartisan manner and with full transparency.

Exactly jackie. I was thrilled with that thorough response. She covered all the bases with that response. I have been very impressed with Toria Nuland. The State Department reporters are a very tough bunch. I can’t believe how tenacious some of the questions can be. Sometimes it feels like a courtroom instead of a briefing. I have tremendous admiration for the dedicated civil servants supporting the Obama administration.

I feel sorry for those that get books ghost written by GWB, the duo of Lizzard and Darth Vader Cheney, and a host of the GWB administration folks who have put out books that are total fiction and re-writing history to make themselves look good.

I’ve tried to DVR all MSNBC shows from 5-10. I don’t like any of them, but I don’t want to see Fox and CNN beat MSNBC in ratings too much. They will use that to justify putting on conservatives, by saying there’s no market for liberal or left-leaning commentators. So, I’ve been suffering through all of them. Even Ed, although I flip a lot and don’t usually watch the shows I record.

Just my opinion, but the only show to consistently DVR is Al Sharptons. Ed Shultz, Rachel Maddow, Chris “Tweety” Matthews, and yes, even LO are so so. You can always see the good shows here on TOD.

The Obama administration is mulling ways to promote principal paydowns of mortgage loans to help struggling homeowners prevent foreclosures, according to House Democrats who met with a top housing regulator Wednesday.

Edward DeMarco, the acting director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) – the independent agency that regulates Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac – is weighing a proposal to allow bankrupt homeowners to temporarily pay down their principal balance, interest-free, in an effort to reduce negative equity, the Democrats said.

But I am so used to tuning in to MSNBC at 8:00 p.m. that I thought I would give him another chance. I’m with you zizi. The first show at 8:00 p.m. was ok. But tonight is the last straw. Joe the plumberr, are you kidding me? As Dave Chappelle would say, I’m out. Looks like it will be Criminal Minds reruns until Rachel and Lawrence come on. Of course, I try not to miss Rev Al. Statement by the President on the Observance of Diwali

Today, here in America and around the world, Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists will celebrate the holiday of Diwali – the festival of lights. Many who observe this holiday do so by lighting the Diya, or lamp, which symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. I was proud to be the first President to mark Diwali and light the Diya at the White House, and last year Michelle and I were honored to join in Diwali celebrations during our visit to India.

Diwali is a time for gathering with family and friends and—as we experienced in India—celebrating with good food and dancing. It is also a time for contemplation and prayer that serves as a reminder of our obligations to our fellow human beings, especially the less fortunate. To all who are observing this sacred holiday here and around the world, Happy Diwali and Saal Mubarak.

    Hey Chips,

I’m not sure this has been posted yet but I want to bring to your attention or ‘re-bring’ to your attention the fact that FLOTUS is coming out with a White House kitchen garden cook book:

“Are you ready for Michelle Obama, kitchen goddess? The first lady’s pulling a Gwyneth Paltrow and publishing a cookbook. American Grown, on sale April 10, 2012, combines veggie growing tips with recipes inspired by Michelle’s White House garden.

It’s a garden she’s toiled over since 2009. So have daughters Sasha and Malia, who help with the weeding “like it or not”. Despite being a gardening novice, Obama’s laid the groundwork for over 55 varietals of veggies. Stalks of black kale, bright yellow peppers, and beams of eggplant have grown from the most expansive garden the White House lawn has ever seen.”

Why do these anchors and pundits keep asking the question about what PBO has been doing this week, “Is it enough”? PBO says it isn’t enough but it is what he can do on his own. Nothing is enough for some folks, but this is better than nothing and at least PBO is trying.

    • October 26, 2011 at 10:33 pm

I was listening to an NPR program this evening and the same attitude got my dander up. They were discussing PBO’s Student Loan repayment initiative that he announced today in Denver, and as the media are wont to do re this President, they had to find someone who thought the initiative was insufficient.

So what was this student’s problem? Well his student loans are from PRIVATE BANKS and so he will not benefit from the federal student loan program. Duh!!!! Of course PBO has no jusrisdiction over private banks. After all, are these not the same people who scream FREEDOM. CHOICE. GIT GUBMINT OFF OUR BACKS? So they chose private and this is what private means. Sheesh!!! I barked at my car radio.

President Obama repeated at a rally at the University of Colorado today that he needs students to get on Twitter to sway Congress — though he spent an unusually long time talking about it.

“I need your help,” Obama said in between cheers from the students in Denver. “Some of these folks in Washington still aren’t getting the message.”

“Like I said, Tweet ‘em. Tweet ‘em,” he said. They’re all Tweeting all over the place. Tweet ‘em back.”

Our DNC Maryland Chairwoman was the MC for this “Rally for Obama 2012”
We had Rep. Donna Edwards, Senator Ben Cardin, Rep. Elijah Cummings, the mighty fine Governor Martin O’Malley and Debbie Wasserman-Shultz (she is a tiny little cutie). The announcement was made that this is the largest crowd that DWS had headlined since becoming the DNC Chair. Everyone was given the AJA pamphlet and the “Promises Kept” flyer.
The crowd was fired up and gave many standing ovations to the speakers. We were told about the role that Maryland will play in the upcoming 2012 election. They signed up hundreds of volunteers tonight that will be critical to helping to register voters and GOTV next year in VA, NC, PA and OH.
Our MD Chairwoman was interviewed today for the evening news and was asked how she was going to deal with the “lack of enthusiasm that democrats have for the 2012 election”. She told them well she was on her way to rally with a few thousand of those so-called unenthusiastic supporters and would let them know after the event.
Honestly I was quite surprised at the turnout of young people who were in attendance tonight. My hope is restored at least here in Maryland that we will have the same level of participation for the 2012 election that we had in 2008.
Now I have a quiz for you all. Of all of President Obama’s accomplishments over the last almost 3 years what do you think got the biggest applause. The answer came as a surprise to me….
