Andrew Sabl: I’ve been reading a lot about Occupy Wall Street. Last Saturday, I visited Zuccotti Park and took a look for myself. I think it’s time we recognized a clear but complex set of truths.

The demands of Occupy Wall Street are both valid and popular; Democrats and Progressives of all tendencies should endorse them. The people actually occupying Wall Street are total flakes….

…. There is no other way to put it. They are ….. fanatics: sincere (in fact, prone to worship, cloyingly and off-puttingly, a cult of sincerity) and often eloquent, but opposed in principle to anything that might give them any power: alliances, membership lists, the authority to endorse….

Here the contrast with the civil rights movement could not be starker. SCLC, CORE, and SNCC marches, freedom rides, and sit-ins always had a clear target: the Jim Crow laws and practices that the protestors were decrying …. With a view to actually getting what they wanted, they gathered as many allies as humanly possible …. In contrast, OWS proudly calls itself a “post-political movement representing something far greater than failed party politics”.

…. Well, they might not need politicians, but the people whose interests they claim to represent sure do. I’m all for construing politics broadly, to include union campaigns and grassroots organizing as well as the corridors of power. But OWS doesn’t like union or grassroots politics any more than the legislative kind. There’s a fine line between participatory democracy and collective narcissism. OWS has not only crossed it but made it a rampart, and they’re standing on the wrong side.

Robert Parry: A curious feature of the American Left is its resistance to recognize its own successes. So, even as President Barack Obama is bringing the eight-year U.S. occupation of Iraq to an end, some on the Left refuse to celebrate.

…. It appears that some don’t want to accept that the anti-war movement has won a hard-fought victory and that Obama’s election was a factor. It’s almost as if the fact that something has been achieved through the deeply flawed U.S. political system threatens a preferred political analysis, which holds that nothing good can happen.

… one only has to think about what the U.S. approach toward Iraq would have been under a President John McCain or even a President Hillary Clinton.

…. Obama’s election marked a significant turning point in the difficult struggle to bring this ill-begotten war to a close. It shows how anti-war dissent and electoral politics can combine – however imperfectly – to get results. Achieving an outcome may take time and surely is frustrating, but victories can be won.

… By refusing to recognize the value of Obama’s election as, in part, an expression of the nation’s anti-war sentiments, the Left could veer off into a rejection of electoral politics altogether – arguing there’s not a dime’s worth of difference between Obama and, say, Mitt Romney or Rick Perry, either of whom would restore the neocons to their place of preeminence in U.S. foreign policy.

…. some on the American Left operate under what might be called “the vanity of perfectionism,” the notion that what’s most important is to have the “perfect” analysis even if its consequences are destructive to mankind.

… what might reverse the course of history would be Obama’s electoral defeat in 2012. Republican front-runners, including Mitt Romney and Rick Perry, have made clear that they would again pursue a muscular neocon agenda with higher military spending and insistence on U.S. global dominance.

… So, the question now is whether the American Left will learn from these past experiences and recognize that – as difficult and as imperfect as it was – the movement to get the United States out of Iraq succeeded.

Woot! Love how Matthews mashes the GOPolitico guy:

TampaBay.com: On May 18, 1956, Mario and Oriales Rubio walked into the American Consulate in Havana and applied for immigrant visas. The form asked how long they intended to stay in the United States.

“Permanently,” Mr. Rubio answered.

Nine days later, the couple boarded a National Airlines flight to Miami, where a relative awaited.

So began a journey that seems as ordinary as any immigrant story, but decades later served as the foundation of an extraordinary and moving narrative told repeatedly by their third child as he became one of the most powerful politicians in Florida and then a national figure.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio has come under fire for incorrectly linking his parents to the Cubans who fled Fidel Castro beginning in 1959. He insists they are exiles nonetheless and angrily denounced the suggestion he misled for political gain.

…. But the visa documents cast clearer divisions between his parents, who came for economic reasons, and the Cubans who scrambled to leave their homeland but thought they could soon return. And the documents come to light amid new discrepancies since Rubio’s time line came under scrutiny last week.

CBS: …. President Obama on Wednesday announced a series of new measures aimed at easing the burden of debt on students struggling to repay their federal college loans.

….Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., lauded Mr. Obama for his plan and said the president was “right to give these students a way to pay these loans off quicker”. “These loans can be phenomenally expensive,” he said, and argued that borrowers who get buried in debt “never get their foot out of the bucket. That’s not a fair way to get started”.

Robert Shireman, former Deputy Undersecretary at the Department of Education and a chief consultant at the education-oriented California Competes program, said the administration’s plan would increase confidence among students about their post-graduate prospects.

“It means people can go to college and use federal loans and have confidence that it’s not going to drive them to bad personal situations,” he said.

The Obama administration has said that 1.6 million Americans will benefit from the lower monthly payments, and upwards of 6 million can take advantage of the loan consolidations, which will lower interest rates by up to 0.5 percent. Most of those affected will be current students or recent borrowers whose income is sufficiently low upon entering the workforce that monthly payments are a significant financial burden.

Our DNC Maryland Chairwoman was the MC for this “Rally for Obama 2012”
We had Rep. Donna Edwards, Senator Ben Cardin, Rep. Elijah Cummings, the mighty fine Governor Martin O’Malley and Debbie Wasserman-Shultz (she is a tiny little cutie). The announcement was made that this is the largest crowd that DWS had headlined since becoming the DNC Chair. Everyone was given the AJA pamphlet and the “Promises Kept” flyer.
The crowd was fired up and gave many standing ovations to the speakers. We were told about the role that Maryland will play in the upcoming 2012 election. They signed up hundreds of volunteers tonight that will be critical to helping to register voters and GOTV next year in VA, NC, PA and OH.
Our MD Chairwoman was interviewed today for the evening news and was asked how she was going to deal with the “lack of enthusiasm that democrats have for the 2012 election”. She told them well she was on her way to rally with a few thousand of those so-called unenthusiastic supporters and would let them know after the event.
Honestly I was quite surprised at the turnout of young people who were in attendance tonight. My hope is restored at least here in Maryland that we will have the same level of participation for the 2012 election that we had in 2008.
Now I have a quiz for you all. Of all of President Obama’s accomplishments over the last almost 3 years what do you think got the biggest applause. The answer came as a surprise to me….

The biggest applause line was “Ending the War in Iraq”. I think the media is missing how important this really is to Democrats. It may not be the issue that rates high on the Publics list but they are awfully happy that he kept this promise. Its going under the radar IMO as a big motivator for loyalist in the Democratic Party.

That’s very interesting. My counsin gave me a high five when the news was announced and she is not politically engaged by any stretch of the imagination. I think you are right. Ending the War in Iraq was a BFD and very important to a lot of the country. I hope there is a lot of coverage of these military men and women coming home at the end of the year.

    • October 26, 2011 at 11:14 pm

That’s great. I think it serves to remind people of the outrageous blunders of Bush and does signify the end of the something very, very significant. Deep sigh of relief for most. And I think that the killing of OBL adds to the positive momentum of all that. Win-win-win.

      October 26, 2011 at 11:23 pm

Now that I think about it, that mention has been getting big applause since the announcement—–last night on Leno too. Before that announcement the repeal of DADT seemed to be the most popular with Dem audiences. Everyone hated that Iraq war as all the deceit became known, all the heavy costs in lives and tax dollars. Everyone is so relieved it’s finally over, so ready to get that gigantic catastrophe behind us.

    • October 26, 2011 at 11:59 pm

I can believe that Donna. I along with two other co-workers listened to the announcement at work and cheered when the president said the war was ending..

I guess we all didn’t think the Iraq war would ever be over until the Prez said it was actually coming to an end..

    • October 27, 2011 at 7:12 am

      Hi Donna and congrats again.

I hitched a ride two days ago to one of my training sessions with a co-worker — a retired military guy. I asked what he thought about the troops coming home. His answer: “They shouldn’t have been there in the first place.” Further, he said to me, “Bush is going to answer to someone for what he did.” I said what do you mean by that? He said, “this war should never have happened.” He’s a quiet fellow, but he got really animated and mad when talking about it.

Lots of people are happy about the war coming to an end. My unofficial polling by just asking random people, whether in the grocery line or co-workers has been 100 percent. No one has hedged. Whenever I am out and about and get the chance to engage someone, I always try to work in talking about something PBO is doing or has done. The answers always vary, but on this Iraq thing, no one argues against this decision.

  6. October 26, 2011 at 11:09 pm

All this sanctimonious shrillness from the msm about the birther issue ? Weren’t these same mofos who enabled that meme in the first place ? Just like they did the teabaggers ?

    • October 26, 2011 at 11:12 pm

An of course, they are still keeping that issue center and alive by all this stupid panels of the same guys “discussing” the same issue show after show.

    • October 27, 2011 at 7:18 am

Amk, you are so correct. For not the media, the teaparty would not have been elevated as it did. They coddled that group, breathlessly covering them, and they discussed the birther issue as if it was part of a normal political discourse. Not a single, so-called elder journalist (i.e. Brian Williams, Bob Schaeffer), took to the airwaves and said enough. This has no place here. Bob Schaeffer only got on TV and called it racists AFTER Donald Trump got rolled by PBO.

I have no respect for many in the media. I give credence to very few of these people, hence my favorite tweet almost daily: Journalism dies a thousand deaths everyday.

Isn’t Ed Schultz the one who gave air time to Joe the plumber instead of letting those same Dems have some airtime on his show to bash Republican obstruction? Yes, but he also offered his show as a place they could come and support the President, and he cut off the Plumber. I don’t usually agree with him, for sure, but I did appreciate his comments about Democratic Congress being virtually silent on the AJA. I don’t think that’s good.

To celebrate a holiday is a preference. For someone to poke fun because of a personal preference is just ludicrous.

Most people still have a Christian alternative to celebrate Halloween. They do so by allowing the children to dress in biblical costumes or less goury ones no witches etc. The kids are still allowed to do so in a planned activity at church.

My latest letter to our President:

    Good morning Mr President,

Yes, we cannot and must not wait for the #KOCHMAFIAGOP Congress.

They have been exceptionally consistent since Jan 2009.

Their sole agenda has been to defeat you even if it means destroying the America.

They’ve given it their best shot.

    You’ve prevailed.

Here’s my simple formula for how you and the American People prevail – it’s my 99-99-99 Plan.

Specifically, 99% of us 99%ers elect 99% of OUR Candidates in 2012.

I urge you to find as many ways as possible to converge OFA with OWS and I think the 99-99-99 Plan is a simple, powerful framework for achieving that goal.

We must ensure that the American dream is the fulfillment of the aspirations of at least 99% of Americans.

We’re happy to include the other 1% as long as they join us rather than persist in trying to enslave us.

Thank you for your extraordinary, empathetic leadership,

    Bob

p.s. If you could catch Speaker Boehner before he runs out of your office I suspect you could burp him and he’d stop crying and feel much better :)

    Chips – site feedback.

Whenever I open TOD in Firefox, a new process called ‘plug-in container.exe’ is initiated and hogs the memory up to 500 MB. This makes the site very slow to load.

    • October 27, 2011 at 6:53 am

Just to add a little more info, I run Firefox 7.0.1 and I don’t have any problem with memory nor slow loading. *shrugs*

    • October 27, 2011 at 7:47 am

Hi amk, thanks for letting me know about that. I wasn’t aware of the ‘plug-in container.exe’ thingie, but the site has been really slow for me too the past few days, having been fine before that. I’m mystified, though, because I have the same version of Firefox as Sequana, so I don’t know what’s happening.

I just checked the Firefox support section and there are a bunch of people with the same problem –

      http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/713600

One has even given up on Firefox as a result of these problems and has gone back to IE.

An Alice in that thread suggests disabling the plug-in (1) type about:config in the address bar 2) type in “dom.ipc” 3) disable the 4 values that say true) – I’m always nervous trying these things when I’m so clueless, but I’ve given it a go and will see how it works out.

Thanks again for letting me know amk, sorry about all this, hopefully Firefox will come up with a proper fix.

      • October 27, 2011 at 8:16 am

        A great tip, Chips.

I disabled that damn dom.ipc.plugin and wham, 500 MB of RAM straight away released. And TOD is faster too now.

I put in a note of appreciation for AliceWyman there. :)

Now I realize that it’s not your site site but more of a firefox issue. Sp sorry to trouble you. :(

And oh, I play around a lot with that firefox config page. That’s the only way I could get the damned updated versions of FF to work. FF dropped the ball big time on their updated versions.

        • October 27, 2011 at 8:32 am

Ah, thrilled that helped amk! Crikey, I’m impressed that you can play around with that config page  I half expected to see smoke coming out of my computer when I went in there.

I think this student loan reform is really a very good thing. It´s about time that it´s made easier for US students to go to college and coming from a country where colleges as such are free of charge (with the exception of elite universities but that´s not too many) and where student protests led to cancelling a 500 Euros per semester fee, I am glad to see there is something moving on the other side of the big pond when it comes to education. College should be affordable for everyone.

I agree with you. Having Joe the plumber on was design to show him as woefully ignorant and unprepared for the job. Can’t remember the last question Ed asked him but he didn’t have a clue of what Ed was speaking about.
Some of theses candidates are dumbing down the position. You would never in recent decades have such caliber of people who think that they are capable of being in congress. For the exception of a few, I am embarrass for a lot of them. They are so illiterate. I guess Joe the plumber feels he is qualified because all he really needs to know is how to say “no.”. A US drone strike in north-west Pakistan has killed two top commanders of one of Pakistan’s most influential Taliban groups, officials say.

They say that among the four people killed is the brother of top Taliban leader Maulvi Nazir.

Maulvi Nazir’s Taliban faction is based in Pakistan’s South Waziristan tribal region where the drone attack on Thursday took place.

His forces are blamed for attacks on Nato troops in nearby Afghanistan.

The militants were killed when four missiles were fired at a pick-up truck they were driving in Azam Warsak, 20km (13 miles) west of Wana, the main town in South Waziristan.

Correspondents say that the strike is a sign that US intelligence has penetrated the close family circle of Maulvi Nazir.

Just saw that tonight Jovie and once again validated my strongly held sentiments about about Hillary and Bill…

        Did you read the Q&A…?

I, I, I everywhere…and the only question regarding the President on Libya was suddenly ‘we’…

It was clearly another PR set-up and audition by the Clinton crowd…

By the way, not a single question about the ‘supremely important’ Pipeline XL project that has her raucous PUMA pals lashing out and wielding as yet another reason to hate Obama…

If it weren’t all so sad, it would be terribly funny…
