The Week

ABC: Continuing his executive actions campaign, President Obama will sign a proclamation this afternoon to designate Fort Monroe a national monument.

“Fort Monroe has played a part in some of the darkest and some of the most heroic moments in American history. But today isn’t just about preserving a national landmark – it’s about helping to create jobs and grow the local economy. Steps like these won’t replace the bold action we need from Congress to get our economy moving and strengthen middle-class families, but they will make a difference,” Obama said in a written statement.

According to the White House, the preservation of Fort Monroe will help create nearly 3,000 jobs in Virginia …. Fort Monroe is integral to the history of slavery, the Civil War, and the U.S. military. It was the place where Dutch traders first brought enslaved Africans in 1619 and during the Civil War the fort became a place for escaped slaves to find refuge. In 1861, the fort was the site of Gen. Benjamin Butler’s “Contraband Decision,” which provided a pathway to freedom for thousands of slaves.

Think Progress: Mitt Romney, his son Tagg, and Romney’s chief fundraiser, Spencer Zwick, have extensive financial and political ties to three men who allegedly participated in an $8.5 billion Ponzi scheme. A few months after the Ponzi scheme collapsed, a firm financed by Mitt Romney and run by his son and chief fundraiser partnered with the three men and created a new “wealth management business” as a subsidiary.

Let’s see. A flat tax flattened in a level way can be flat if you have different levels of flatness that allow you to tax the flat part of the, er flatting?

I think I just announced my candidacy for the Republican nomination.

Karma is a B%^&# and thank heavens she is an only child. I am literally tickled to death with all of this Cain nonsense. But I will say this, since POLITICO is now being accused of being a left wing organization (LMAO)….I give it a couple of days before they come out with a story on a Dem or more likely the Prez. You know it’s coming, and no matter how infantile or juvenile the story is…they(politico) will pimp it like it’s the second coming. But I will continue to #PressOn and #KickOfMyBedroomSlippers

Don’t be fooled. Politco is part of the GOPMEDIA Corp and is every bit as right-wing as FOX News. Politico is in Mitt Romney’s pockets and they will attempt to destroy anyone they perceive as being a threat. Right now, Cain just happens to be that individual – although they most likely did not anticipate that 3 months ago.

It’s completely comical that some wingnuts are describing Politico as liberal  They’ve obviously missed their relentless negative coverage of the President. I despise Cain, but he’s just the latest victim of Politico and their GOP establishment buddies.

And guess who is the number one bundler for tge Obama campaign?
          Yup- Corzine.

This politico story about Cain is not anti-GOP, even though it appears that way. It’s a pro-Mitt Romney move. Right now Cain is perceived by the MSM, PL, and GOP establishment as the biggest threat to their golden boy Mitt Romney. The evisceration of his silly 999 tax plan didn’t budge his poll numbers, and he continued to rise. The mocking of his “smoking” and “flower” ads didn’t do him in either. So that caused some alarm bells to go off. That’s why they’re going after him with such aggression. I have long predicted that Cain would not be the GOP nominee because either he would self-implode, or swiftboated by the RomneyCorp (which includes certain factions in the OWS movement and liberal blogs/TV).

Karl Rove knows that Cain nor Perry stands a snowball’s chance in hell to win the general. Mitt is very unlikely, but they are trying to sell him as the “sane” one. But all his flip flops are making that exceedingly hard to accomplish.

      • 24 Obama Grandmama
        November 1, 2011 at 1:02 pm

I thought Mitt needed many real conservative opponents running at the same time to divide up that support to benefit himself. For instance if there were only one conservative running they may overtake Mitts percentage. Thus Cain, Perry, Bachmann all divide the spoils. I do get that Cain has surpassed Mitt in the polls so his campaign may think it is time to take Cain down.

West has admitted he’s a libertarian. So the legalization of drugs is more important that removing the part of the Civil Rights Act which states that private businesses can discriminate against anyone they darn well please. Bill Maher long ago said he was a libertarian. I’d say Michael Moore probably is as well. They favor Ron Paul. I knew there had to be an agenda other than the pettiness of West. Holder’s Critics Are NRA’s Paid Congressional Gunslingers

While the NRA attacks Holder to raise money, the organization is getting a return on investments it’s already made on Capitol Hill. How long House Republicans will continue to carry water for the NRA is anyone’s guess, but in any case, it won’t come cheaply. The gun rights group has already spent nearly $200,000 on federal candidates for the 2012 campaign cycle. Which member of Congress will be the next to put money in their pocket then put a call for Holder’s job on the record?

INFRASTRUCTURE SPENDING: USA (2%) vs CHINA (9%)

Bernie Sanders Straight Talk: The GOP Is Sinking The Economy To Defeat Obama

Host Al Sharpton asked Bernie Sanders if Republicans were trying to sink the ship in order to change captains. Sanders answered, “Yes, I think you’ll note that in the last couple of weeks the Democratic leadership have brought up, rather modest I must tell you, Al, doesn’t go anywhere near far enough. Modest proposals to protect the jobs of teachers, firemen, police officers, I don’t believe we got one Republican vote for that. This week, my understanding is we are going to bring forth legislation to start rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure, that’s roads and bridges and rail systems. Everybody in America knows that we need to do that.”

After Sharpton described the Senate proposal, Sanders continued, “Al, Al, China is now spending nine percent of its GDP on infrastructure. They’re building thousands of miles of high speed rail, Europe, five percent. We are at two point two percent. We’re becoming the laughingstock of the entire world. You wanna put people to work tomorrow? Start rebuilding the infrastructure. It is incomprehensible to me that the Republicans are opposing that.”

Earlier in his comments, Sen. Sanders hit on exactly why they are opposing infrastructure and any other proposal that will create jobs. Republicans are intentionally tanking the economy in order to give themselves the best possible shot at defeating President Obama in 2012. The Obama administration may not say it, but Bernie Sanders did.

Herb Cain just said on HLN that if he had had “a day to think about it,” he would have given a better answer yesterday on the question of the sexual harassment allegations.

Wonder if he realizes that as leader of the free world, he most likely will not get “a day to think about” all of the decisions he would be asked to make.

GET HIM OFF THE NATIONAL STAGE NOW, PLEASE, SOMEBODY. SOMEBODY?

Cain also added during the interview that at the time of the sexual harassment allegations, he told his wife all about it.

Funny, because yesterday he said he barely remembered the incident(s). If you tell your wife about a charge like that at your place of business, methinks it’s not something you – or your wife – would forget, even 12 years later.

Just saw Ken Vogel, one of the Politico writers on the story, sorta hint at that possibility. Also—heard Tweety say that more was coming. Also just read a hint of that possibility in the Chgo Trib. I think this is a Rove operation, and they are going to get Cain out of the way.

I could scream after hearing Coulter’s comments about “Our blacks are better than their blacks.” She’s a white supremacist who just doesn’t wear her hood. It’s time for all people to turn off faux news. No watching just to see what the crazies say. I consider faux to be the media wing of the kkk.

Absolutely! Toure was great. Cain is their minstrel show. He’s not a threat and they can laugh at him. He brought it on himself. He said the Secret Service could call him “Cornbread”. Toure said President Obama (then Senator) was serious, brilliant and they HAD to listen to him. They could not dismiss him as a joke. He went on to say that Cain balances the scales for them.

Maybe it’s just me…but I want Cain to stay around, I want Huntsman and Perry to stay around too. If there is no one left standing by the end of the year all we have is Mittens. At least the others will press him on issues, otherwise all Mittens has to do is stand around and continue to breath and he is the GOP nominee. He needs continued push back from conservatives, he stays quiet because he can. Me too Carla. I don’t want Cain or Perry fizzling anytime soon. The media gives Romney pass after pass. He’s the only repub candidate running for president who hasn’t been on a sunday talk show since March 2010. He keeps dodging questions about his policies and plans. At first in the debates the other candidates left him alone so he had a safe hole to jump into and pretend to look “Presidential.” But as the debates went on, Perry and Cain began prodding him and he began to unravel. I want more of that. I want more and more Americans to know he has NO core. None at all. I want him to start answering questions and stop being a coward. He shouldn’t just have an easy road to becoming the GOP nominee.

However, if Mittens was the last one standing, all attention would be focused on his ugly, ragged, flip floppy record. As it stands now, he’s just standing over there laughing as all the attention is on the other goofballs. He’s getting away with murder right now. He’s being given a pass.

    • November 1, 2011 at 11:01 am

It’s all about money…if the candidate(s) sink the money dries out and is poured into the nominee they believe can beat Obama. They may want to stay around but if they have no money to campaign they drop out. I want the money spread around these jokers, otherwise it will all go to Mittens. Every time I hear the song “WHO ARE YOU” by the Who, I think of Mittens. I find all the repug candidates revolting, but Romney is the one that makes my skin crawl. He is slimy, and yes like a snake he has no core.

The White House has asked the Pentagon for recommendations for U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan in 2014, Reuters reports:

Sources familiar with the discussions said President Barack Obama’s top aides have asked for scenarios for 2014. As part of that process, the Pentagon must look at troop levels for 2013 — suggesting deeper withdrawals beyond the removal, by next September, of the 33,000 surge troops Obama deployed in a bid to turn around the flagging decade-old conflict.

Chrysler said Tuesday its U.S. sales jumped 27 percent in October, while General Motors reported a slimmer 2 percent increase on increased demand for both cars and trucks.

Chrysler Group LLC sold more than 114,000 cars and trucks last month compared with 90,000 a year earlier. The results marked the Auburn Hills, Mich.-based automaker’s best October sales since 2007.

Meanwhile, General Motors Co. sold nearly 187,000 cars and trucks last month. Car sales rose 4 percent and truck sales gained 2 percent. But sales of its crossover sport utility vehicles fell 1 percent.

Greek PM faces party revolt over bailout

Six leading members of Greece’s governing Pasok party have called on Prime Minister George Papandreou to resign, the day after he called a referendum on the proposed EU bailout.

One MP has defected from Pasok, cutting Mr Papandreou’s parliamentary majority to two seats – 152 out of 300 – ahead of a confidence vote on Friday.

The opposition has called for early elections, saying the referendum jeopardises Greece’s EU membership.

    European markets have fallen sharply.

Wow, what a monkey wrench the Greek PM threw into the mix with this move. He totally blindsided everybody. What a mess.

There was a well done news article about this Greek coming referendum election and the conflicts it involves on NPR this morning. It is tied to the stock market plunge today.

This is absolutely PRICELESS! I hope this information is spread far and wide and that the DNC uses it–in the form of a 2012 campaign ad.~

Newsweek has uncovered letters that show Rep. Cantor requesting hundreds of millions of stimulus dollars for his district at the same time; he was publicly claiming that government can’t create jobs.

Just a month after going on ABC and claiming that the government can’t create jobs, Cantor sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to request almost $75 million in federal stimulus funds for the I-95 high speed rail project. Cantor along with Rep. Bobby Scott wrote that, “High speed rail provides a sensible and viable solution to our region’s transportation challenges. It is estimated that creating a high speed railway through Virginia will generate as many as 185,500 jobs, as much as $21.2 billion in economic development, and put nearly 6.5 million cars off the road annually.”

    ~snip~

In October 2009, Cantor and several other Congressmen from both parties sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood for $60 million in federal funds to be added to the Title XI Ship Loan Guarantee program. Cantor and the others wrote, “Once an application for a Title XI loan guarantee is approved, the construction order is immediately placed in a shipyard, instantaneously creating and sustaining thousands of jobs in the shipyard and supplier base for two to three years.”

That doesn’t surprise me at all. Remember, Congressman Joe Wilson pulled in more than $200,000 after his “You Lie” outburst.

    • November 1, 2011 at 12:30 pm

I don’t think so. They love playing the victim. Sarah Palin’s road to becoming a millionaire was based on her victim-hood. Now Cain is the victim of the big bad media and the “libruls” coming after him. The thing is the “tip” probably came from Karl Rove or one of Cain’s rivals.

Mitt “Who Am I This Time?” Romney gets eviscerated in a new Jon Huntsman ad. Huntsman may be at the bottom of the heap, but he sure knows how to produce effective ads against his opponent.
