E.J. Dionne: The right-wing’s shellacking …. Tuesday’s results underscored the power of unions and populist politics, the danger to conservatives of social-issue extremism and the fact that 2010 was no mandate for right-wing policies. They also mean that if Republicans don’t back away from an agenda that makes middle-class, middle-of-the-road Americans deeply uncomfortable — and in some cases angry — they will lose the rather more important fight of 2012.

Ya mean, I’m the only one who is having probs with twitter? Keeps going from “over capacity” to “gotta ask—are you human?” Won’t let me sign in, just keep getting the insulting question asking if I’m human. Geez. I better check —–scales and tails mean I’m human, right?

Rev Al hit the nail on the head when he said that the emoleft that says “the base” has abandoned PBO, they’re talking to themselves.

The actual base have been with him knowing he was going to make tough decisions we wouldn’t particularly enjoy. Those who have been ranting about him being a sellout/capitulator/caver and calling him a Republican DLC right winger were NEVER supportive of him and are NOT and WILL NOT speak for the base of us who DO support him.

I just saw this on twitter: McCain stating that a third party will emerge because both parties are useless. I know many were reassuring us earlier today that they don’t think Bloomberg will run in 2012, but something’s obviously up. Worth watching.

I think like Theo that there is a clandestine move by the No labels group of Bush and Clinton anti-Obama people to run Jon Huntsman as a 3rd party candidate alongside Michael Bloomberg.

Only problem is that the premature descent of OWS folks on New York has sort of messed with the Michael Bloomberg -savior- narrative Ralph Nader has been pushing!!!

Karma caught Bloomberg flatfooted with the girlfriend on the board of the park deal, even though the usual suspects on the PL side tried hard to gloss over it or completely ignore Bloombergs gaping flaws!!!

Hey, we got a concession from McCain, if he’s saying the party he’s in is useless along with the second party that’s useless. (I can’t bear to read the story, but this is my take.)

I could just picture McCain starting to break from the Republicans who weren’t wild enough about him to make him President. Not sure how he feels about Romney, since I never pay attention to him (but I don’t think he likes too many other than Lindsay and Joe L, his hangers on), but I could see McCain working to make sure he isn’t President, either. The guy is totally self-absorbed and hateful, disgusting, oh don’t get me started. Get off my lawn, McCain!

    • November 9, 2011 at 7:29 pm

So we’ll have the GOP for the 1% and the third party for the top 2-5%? Any third party comes forward they will be to the right of the Dem party because the lefties have no money. And once people see who these people are they won’t want to touch them.

You know what else McCain said today? that we should have a tax holiday so that corporations can buy yachts and jets. If he knows something and supports that group, I’m not worried.

Supporters of same sex marriage in Maine have gathered enough signatures to put the issue to a statewide vote in 2012, according to the Associated Press. EqualityMaine, GLAAD and Maine Freedom to Marry launched the signature-gathering drive in late August in hopes placing the legalization of marriage for same sex couples on next November’s ballot. The coalition announced Wednesday that it had collected more than 100,000 signatures, well over the 57,277 signatures required.

    ~snip~

Maine is the only state in New England that does not allow same sex couples to enter into marriage or civil unions. The state passed legislation in 2009 that would have allowed same sex couples to wed, but the law was repealed six months later by a statewide ballot.

It is a terrible story, but I do believe these kids can have a good life. Let’s hope and pray they can, because with prayer all things are possible. I often listen to Joyce Meyer the preacher. Her father would come in her room and have molest with her. She talks about that often. Her life wasn’t easy, but today her life is good. And I pray for these young people to make it. God be with them, and give them love and strength.

          November 9, 2011 at 8:36 pm

I read and heard Joe Paterno reported it to higher ups and they dropped it. I don’t know if he personally helped cover it up, but he witnessed it and did not follow up if someone reported it the authorities or police. Maybe he felt he did what was legally required of him, but as a moral individual, he did not go far enough to protect that child. I don’t care if it were my mother, brother, best friend, enemie, If I actually witnessed a crime against a innocent child, elderly person, any crime period….I would report it to the police. What his best friend did was wrong and for him to be silent all these years is shameful. If he were my husband and we had kids, grandkids, I would divorce him.

What I heard was a person witnessed the rape and told his Dad who told him to tell Paterno. He told Paterno and Paterno told the person above him he was to report it to. The actually witnessed part according to the reports I heard did not happen. He followed protocol. I am glad the protocol has changed today.

U.S. forces have handed Joint Base Balad, which was once one of the world’s busiest airports and housed some 36,000 personnel, over to Iraqi control, a US military spokesman said on Wednesday. “We handed over Joint Base Balad (JBB) yesterday,” the spokesman said, adding that at its peak, the base to the north of Baghdadhoused “28,000 uniformed personnel and 8,000 civilian contractors.” “It was the second-largest base (for US forces in Iraq) in terms of personnel,” the spokesman said.

Eleven US bases remain to be handed over, according to the spokesman.

Today HRC released a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee members from a bipartisan group of governors and mayors in marriage equality states calling for repeal of the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The letter was sent the day before the committee is expected to markup the Respect for Marriage Act (RMA) – the bill to repeal DOMA and end federal marriage discrimination.

Signatories to the letter include: Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York; Gov. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island; Gov. Dannel Malloy of Connecticut; Gov. Martin O’Malley of Maryland; Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts; Gov. Peter Shumlin of Vermont; Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York, NY; Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. of New Haven, CT; Mayor Bill Finch of Bridgeport, CT; Mayor Vincent C. Gray of Washington, DC; Mayor Edwin Lee of San Francisco, CA; Mayor Thomas Menino of Boston, MA; Mayor Jerry Sanders of San Diego, CA; Mayor Pedro E. Segarra of Hartford, CT; and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles, CA. California Gov. Jerry Brown – whose state recognizes a limited amount of same-sex couples married before the passage of Prop 8 – submitted a separate letter to the committee in support of the RMA.

State of play: The Senate is slated to vote Thursday on Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) plan to scuttle a recently finalized EPA air pollution rule, setting up a crucial test of Senate support for a pillar of the White House Clean Air Act agenda.

Lawmakers will vote on Paul’s resolution to nullify EPA’s Cross-State Air Pollution Rule, which seeks to curb smog and particulate-forming pollution from power plants in 27 states in the eastern half of the country.

The House voted to scuttle the rule in September as part of a broader bill taking aim at EPA regulations, but President Obama has threatened to veto the House measure and Paul’s resolution.

Paul is using the Congressional Review Act — a mid-1990s law that was part of then-Speaker Newt Gingrich’s (R-Ga.) “Contract with America” — which allows Congress to overturn agency regulations.

Resolutions under the act have an easy path to the Senate floor and cannot be filibustered.

It’s also, however, a rarely used tool that has been wielded successfully just once.

So, why don’t we use this tool?

Democrats on the House Energy and Commerce Committee blasted Republicans for releasing a highly select set of emails on the Solyndra loan guarantee Wednesday, alleging that the documents paint an inaccurate picture of ties between a major fundraiser for President Obama and the White House.

Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the committee, and Diana DeGette (D-Colo.), the top Democrat on the investigative subcommittee, called the emails “misleading and inaccurate” in a blistering letter to top Republicans on the panel.

“We write to express our extreme concern over your selective release today of three e-mails in conjunction with the Solyndra investigation,” Waxman and DeGette wrote. “The e-mails you have released present a misleading and inaccurate account to the public. In fact, you have documents and communications in your possession that contradict the three e-mails you released today, yet you did not release them.”

Waxman said committee staff interviewed George Kaiser, a “bundler” for Obama’s campaign whose foundation invested in Solyndra, Tuesday for two hours about his involvement with Solyndra. Republican committee staff never revealed the interview to reporters Wednesday.

“Many e-mails were presented to Mr. Kaiser for his comment, including some of the e-mails you released. In key instances, he directly contradicted your interpretations of the documents you released today,” Waxman and DeGette said in the letter. “But you also failed to disclose this. This is wrong and an unfair smear of Mr. Kaiser.”

Women Voters Buoy Obama’s 2012 Hopes

“Lilly Ledbetter, 73, whose pay discrimination case inspired the law, is also likely to be at least an unofficial surrogate for Obama on the trail. ”I’ve never been so proud of anything,” she said, telling of her travels to college campuses nationwide to talk it up.

“It sent a strong message to the women, minorities and working families across this nation,” she said. “I am just working as hard as I can to hope to try to keep Obama in office another term so he can keep what he started, because in my opinion it really takes two terms for a president to succeed in all their goals.”

Perry – pull back regulations. Flat tax.

Get rid of EPA, Federal Banking, Dodd Frank, Obamacare – next President should pull back all regulations since 2008. If it is killing jobs do away with it.

Bachmann – Freddie and Fannie applied for 7 billion dollars because they are failing. Freddie and Fannie gave 10 executives 12 million dollars in bonuses and then they came back to the govt to ask for 13 million dollars to get through the quarter.

Cain – how would you get rid of Fannie and Freddie Mac

First he would utilize his 999 plan and get rid of the regulators. Throw out the tax code and get govt out of the way. Then he would find a way to unravel Freddie and Fannie.

People are tuning in to this program tonight and he wants them to know that he feels their pain. Blah blah blah fluckety boring Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz blahh, Right size Frannie and Freddie. Mitigate risk to it takes risk to tax payers off the table.

On health care – sit down and address cost containment with 50 mayors. Harmonizing medical records – automated process, let the market decide

Santorum – on partisanship Question – how would you put country before party – be specific?

He would create a platform with Democrats so that they would support what he wants to do. He spoke to bipartisan group on his manufacturing jobs plan and had TWO dems say they want to support it and wanted him to come to their states and talk about it.

the President is more interested in his re-election than solving problems.

The Republican response to raising the debt ceiling–to paying bills on debts they created–and to job growth initiatives exposes that as a lie.

Perry on bipartisanship – flat tax

Not a republican or democratic issue

The three agencies he would get rid of is Commerce education and and ahhh ahh ahhh. Commerce education and aaah ahhh ahhh.
Commerce education and he forgot the last one.

(I shit you not. Perry could not remember the third agency he wanted to get rid of)

    Romney – on tax cuts

Huntsman – on increasing the economy

We have a trust crisis. We have to raise that trust. He is the only one that implemented a flat tax. He is a practitioner. phase out corporate welfare, lower the rates, make US more competitive.

Ron Paul on high college tuition rates – Question – how can it be more affordable

Get rid of loan program, get rid of Dept of Education, inflation is the problem. Student should pay for college the way you pay for cell phone and computers.

Audit the Fed and end the Fed

    Romney on China and trade

Romney – China is cheating on trade and he would crack down on China. Unlike this President he would label China as a currency manipulator. They have stolen intellectual property, hacking into our system, they have implemented predatory levels of pricing so he would apply tariffs. Per Romney – China is killing our jobs.

    November 9, 2011 at 9:43 pm

Huntsman – Romeny is starting a trade war if he goes around slapping labels on China. Romney is pandering.

Slap a label on them, they will slap one on the US because it could be perceived US is doing the same thing.

Baachman – She found out that Chinese has nuclear weapons, China gave US stolen merchandise which the US military is now using in their facilities. The US is paying for the Army liberation movement in China because we owe them serious debt.
