Rev Al and Chris Hayes made excellent points about the midterms and why the Teabags won. The healthcare fight took a lot of energy out of the left. and of course you had the emoleft whining about it not being public option or single payer, and calling PBO a failure, capitulator, caver, etc.

Now the emoleft whiners have been exposed and mostly neutered, us Obamabots have the tide. That’s why the anti union issue failed in Ohio and the personhood anti abortion bill failed in Mississippi.

The media largely underestimates our power. They were wrong in 2008, and they’ll be wrong next year. Whatever Republican they nominate, whether it’s Romney, Gingrich, Perry, the Republican won’t win, and we have to ensure that they don’t win.

Al’s is very right about the energy that was required to win in 2008 and to get Health Care passed. I do think people were worn out in 2010, but time and tide have passed and people are fully awake and ready now to fight.

      Yep.

And, Americans – the true majority of them – just weren’t ready to believe that the #KOCHMAFIAGOP (aka Republicans) would unrelentingly obstruct, even if it meant destroying our economy, the President.

      Now. They. Know.

If the #KOCHMAFIAGOP thought Tuesday 8 Nov 2011 didn’t work out nicely for them, wait until the polls close on 6 Nov 2012!

    Huntsman Hits Sununu-Romney Tie

After former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu recently announced his endorsement of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, rival Jon Huntsman gave him a piece of his mind in an open letter.

“Over the course of this campaign you have made it abundantly clear that you would endorse a conservative governor. However, I am surprised that you believe Mitt Romney meets that threshold,” wrote Huntsman, providing a bulleted list of Romney’s allegedly non-conservative positions on issues like tax cuts, healthcare, and abortion.

Asked about the reason for the candidate’s personalized response, Huntsman’s spokesman Tim Miller said: “Governor Sununu’s justification for endorsing Mitt Romney was disingenuous. He had been an attack dog for the campaign for months. The fact is Governor Huntsman has a strong track record of conservative governance while Mitt Romney raised taxes, signed big government healthcare, and ran away from the Republican Party.”

“Big government healthcare” … “ran away from the Republican party”…

Is it just me or Huntsman is starting to pander to the Tea Party ? “Big government healthcare”… jeezzz .. this is Frank Luntz vocabulary.

Not sure Huntsman is in the race just to position himself for 2016… He wants it folks.

    • November 12, 2011 at 1:51 am

How can they stand their lying selves? Huntsman expects a gopropaganda to worry about whether the mittmopper has enough con creditials? Brawawawawa..romney’s the biggest con man around. I’m sure Sununu’s in his league..or wishes he were.

PBO and FL look so cute in their casual gear. Love Michelle’s outfit and PBO looks ready for the aircraft carrier with his bomber jacket. Obama grabbed a wee baby first thing in the crowd. Crowd was loving as always. I always notice how much they love the Obamas. When anyone gets a chance to hug one of them, it looks so heartfelt and strong. Watched a blond lady hug Michelle and just hold on with all her might. I got a little nervous when someone yelled, “Mr. President!!!” as the president was getting into the limo. I’m always on alert when he’s in crowds. I think it was just an exuberant supporter trying to get his attention for a photo. To the game!

    This is sweet.

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. — Jacob Anthony Saydeh (say-DAH’) won’t have any trouble remembering precisely when he was born.

Virtua Memorial hospital in Mount Holly, N.J., says Jacob entered the world at 11:11 a.m. on Friday – 11-11-11.

And to make the Veterans Day birth even more remarkable, the boy’s mother is an Air Force veteran and his father currently services in the Air Force.

It’s the second child for Staff Sgt. Christopher Saydeh and his wife, Danielle. They live at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, where he is a member of Air Force security forces. They are a third-generation military family.

Jacob weighed 8 pounds, 13 ounces.

Took a summer vacation there with the kids a few summers ago….we drove in from Phoenix….I am an ocean/beach person. All my life I have lived at the shore…except for now, and just smelling that salt air, and hearing the waves was a true moment of Zen for me….I can’t explain it, but it truly is a part of who I am….I feel not quite right living in the desert.
Great vacation with the kids…they never wanted to come home, and my son PROMISED me that when he’s a lawyer, that he will buy me a house at the beach:) (He loves me!) Now, he tells me that he wants to be a Dr….that’ll work too!

A week at the Del? WOW!!! I wanted to stay there for my honeymoon (in 1981) and cringed at the cost for a night! We drove to LA….and had a great time!

Yes, it was WOW Desertflower. It was a promised gift by my then husband and it was expensive , but I deserved every cents , believe me. Oh, we do have that same taste, Desertflower. I love the ocean/beach and all things lovely. Your Zen moments also sound like my moments when I put my entire being into those Zen moments.

You know, Desertflower, we have such a beautiful group of wonderful people on our site here with so many of us with like mindness. It is great. I do believe that because of this, our spirits being so much in tune with each other,it makes this beautiful haven that Chipsticks has created here so special.

I hope that you son will make good on that promise. Either professional will be great. Listening to you, I am sure that he will keep his promise. Lawyer, he promised a house, now wanting to become a Dr., then he should have 2 houses waiting in the wings for you. Either one will work, I am sure.

I was great for that week. I can hear the harpist now in my head playing such lovely music. Food was great and the tennis was also great. Oh, we are going to get a little homesick. Great memories, though. Thanks for sharing.HZ

HZ…we are kindred spirits here, aren’t we? The ocean is my bliss and I feel complete when I am near it. Part of me seems missing now…I hope my son makes good on that promise :) Hell, at this point I’d take a double wide at the beach!
I’m certain that you deserved a week at the Del …no doubt in my mind. Maybe one day I’ll finally get there and be able to stay…on the bucket list.

                Great memories to be sure!

Seems like eons ago…still married after all these many years.
He finally retired…but by then he was a submariner. Takes a certain kind of person to go on something that sinks on purpose!

    ABC NEWS. . .
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Rejected Staff Request to Skip Meeting Where She Was Shot
    By COLLEEN CURRY

The night before Gabrielle Giffords was shot, she sent an email to her husband and a friend, bemoaning the state of politics in Arizona.

“My poor state!” she wrote. “The nut jobs have stolen it away from the good people of Arizona.”

The nut jobs, who in the past months had shot out the glass doors and windows of Giffords office, were beginning to worry the congresswoman, according to the new book Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope, written by Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly. But Giffords forged ahead, meeting with constituents to hear their concerns.

So I’ve been thinking about the “inevitability of Romney” and all these debates, and one thing I will say about the long Dem primary of 2008, it may have been long, but IMHO, it made Obama a better candidate for the general, because all the oppo research thrown at him by Clinton campaign was the exact things that McCain campaign tried to throw at him and thx to the long primary and all those debates he performed way better than expected in those debates.
The Dem primary debates included a number of great debaters, I’d contend that allt he candidate were great debaters when they had the chance to be. Chris Dodd, Biden, Clinton, Edwards and Obama were all as I recall fine in the debate format. No real major gaffes, Biden being the best in my mind.

On the flip side, the GOP debaters are mostly all horrible debaters. Romney’s winning by default in these debates. He just has to sit back and let the other contenders fall on their swords. He has not really been challenged by either the other candidates or the moderators in the debates so far.

Romney’s been allowed to coast along, and I suspect that once he wins the nomination and he actualy has to debate President Obama, he will find out what McCain did. POTUS ain’t no slouch in the debate department, and unlike Romney’s current opposition, POTUS has a knack for remembering figures, statements and information without cue cards and contrary to the teleprompter meme that Romney and his ilk like to traffic on, Obama is really quick on his feet.

These debates have not allowed Romney to hone any defense to the many things that oppo researchers on both sides have on him and with his history of bending which ever way the winds blows there are many attacks to be made against Romney. IMHO, none of these debates so far have prepared Romney for the fight that the Obama campaign will bring to him in the general.

So I think Romney should enjoy this cakewalk to the nomination because once it’s over, he better be ready.

    • 43 ribletsonthepan
      November 11, 2011 at 8:17 pm

Great analysis…spot on! May I add one more deficit. Romney’s hubris. Romney actually believes he is Obama’s equal. Mark my words, Romney thinks he can outplay PBO—He’ll soon find out as so many others what a miscalculation it is to make that play. What none fathom, PBO is his own man and doesn’t “play at anything”.

    • 44 Judith Fardig
      November 11, 2011 at 10:58 pm

I also think Romney’s strategy of avoiding all the Sunday talk shows will come back to bite him. There is plenty of video evidence of his flip floppery, so this strategy won’t save him from a major gaffe.

Clearly, the media is now pushing their new Rom-NO hero, and it just so happens to be Mankini. The problem is that shortly, folks will find out that Mankini’s flaws are even bigger than Perry, Bachmann and Cain’s put together. And then they’ll be left with a boring Rom-No and the disillusioned, bored, dissatisfied and unenthusiastic GOP voting contingent to be matched with a fired up, PRO- Obama voting contingent.

No tell tweety to go (F) himself and PBO does not need to learn anything from our beloved JFK.

        • November 12, 2011 at 12:24 am

One thing that I came away from Tweety’s crazy behind book promoting is this: Tweety do not realize that he is turning a lot of us who would read another book about JFK, myself included because I liked JFK in many ways, but Tweety is using the inappropriate technique of trying to promote the book.

He does not need to try to tear down one POTUS from this era to lift up another one. JFK and POB are two entirely different Presidents in our history. Leave their accomplisements on their own. But Tweety will not listen to us. Many of the young people do not remember JFK like many of the older ones, like myself ,who was at the age of many of the current young people who are so motivated by POB. So it is very disturbing to tell our beautiful present day young people how their present day president, POB should be.. My knowledge of JFK is completely different from what is happening during POB’s time for the young people today. Mistake Tweety. POB does not need to learn from JFK to be a wonderful President, POB is already a great President.

Second, there will only be one POB and one JFK. True, there can be personality traits that are alike in both, but the core of POB and JFK are two very distinctly different aspects of each ones Presidency. But Tweety is so bent on spitting his ideas about what POB should be that, he will miss out on a lot of books being sold and read for the sheer joy of learning about a good President in many ways.

But for some reason, so many of the’ old white men’s club’ want POB to be like all those old white hair bearded men who are displayed on thd walls of the WH walls. Ain’t going to happen, Tweety. Plus Tweety is missing out of some great history that he could be writing about now for what the young people are experiencing and seeing for themselves with in the flesh now, President Barack H. Obama, our 44th President. Tweety shut up. These beautiful minds are way ahead of you, and you are pissing them off plus this senior, HZ.

Stop trying to tell POB what lessons he needs to learn from JFK, WJC, and the rest. Let him make his own history. POB knows how to gather for himself the books to glean knowldege from without you, Tweety. Trust us. Now STHU, and let us enjoy our President, Barack Obama.HZ

        • November 12, 2011 at 1:39 am

Yes, JoJothecat that is true. That is why I call it our ‘haven’ of goodness. We do not have to argue, we discuss in a respectful conversation, share factual news, spread the word of truth, contact media when they report lies, keep in touch with each other on many levels that will keep us focus and true supporters of POB.

It is a very wonderful setting to be in. I remember how beautiful and uplifting it was for me, when I went to do phonebanking at a lovely place and met so many wonderful like action people who are supporting POB. It is so refreshing to come together, discuss, share great conversation about how we all got involved and then mostly how and why we are still doing whatever we can to continue to support this wonderful man and his Administration. It is very thrilling to be about of history in such a positive manner.

I can’t even visionalize POB sitting down and acting out all of the ugly drama that we see the opposition doing in their debates etc. It is disgusting to watch. POB embodies the calm, refreshing spirit of intellect, grace, compassion, hard work, and looking ahead in a very positive workable manner for our country. I like that about our leader. That is what I want to be a part of during this important time. We are so blessed to be taking part in his history making presidency. What a team to be on.HZ

On Day Before Veterans Day, Mitt Romney Said He Wants To Prepare America For War Against Iran

    =================================

As we honor our military veterans throughout the day today, Mitt Romney is preparing for war against Iran. In a Thursday commentary in the Wall Street Journal, Romney accused President Obama of being too weak against Iran and said he would prepare America to go to war with the Islamic nation.

Romney said he would increase military aid to Israel and send carrier battle groups to the Persian Gulf in order to back up diplomacy “with a very real and very credible military option. These actions will send an unequivocal signal to Iran that the United States, acting in concert with allies, will never permit Iran to obtain nuclear weapons. ‘Si vis pacem, para bellum.’ That is a Latin phrase, but the ayatollahs will have no trouble understanding its meaning from a Romney administration: If you want peace, prepare for war.”
    .
    .
If Romney were to become President, it would only be a matter of time before the Republican Party and their corporate masters take this country into yet another war. And that is something that America just cannot afford to do. It is outrageous that Romney calls for war, especially the day before we honor the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for peace.

I can’t believe Mitt “Who Am I This Time” Romeny even broached the subject of vouchers for veterans on Veterans Day. I guess we will just have to wait for the inevitable convoluted walk back. The mind reels.

        Romney eyes vouchers for veterans

Mitt Romney spent part of his Veterans’ Day in Maudlin, South Carolina, visiting with a dozen vets, and wandering into some dangerous policy waters.

Talking with the veterans about the challenge of navigating the Veterans Affairs bureaucracy to get their health care benefits after they leave active duty, Romney suggested a way to improve the system would be to privatize it.

“Sometimes you wonder, would there be some way to introduce some private sector competition, somebody else that could come in and say, you know each soldier gets X thousand dollars attributed to them and then they can choose whether they want to go on the government system or the private system and then it follows them, like what happens with schools in Florida where they have a voucher that follows them, who knows.”

Even the most conservative Republicans rarely venture into privatizing veterans’ health care benefits. Last year, the Republican U.S. Senate candidate in Colorado went there, but it was problematic enough that his campaign quickly walked it back.

And I wouldn’t be too surprised if Romney’s team does the same today.

This makes me sick. To advertize you would undertake a preemptive war is the stupidest move a would-be leader can make. He’s just said I will carelessly risk the US military, jeopardize the fragile world economy, risk massive instability in the ME, plunge the US deeply into debt and risk countless Iranian lives without even thinking of the consequences just to “show” that I’m an alpha male. And we’re supposed to cheer at this because we all want more wars, more lives lost, and more hatred of the US. Go home, Willard, you have disqualified yourself for anything but a rest home.

      • November 12, 2011 at 12:14 am

Since Iran controls Straits of Hormuz which is a vital shipping route war with Iran would cause oil prices to skyrocket and destroy economic recovery here and in Europe not to mention causing trillions of dollars in debt and lives lost. Hope people after learned the lesson of costs of GOP war-mongering. I talk with many Iranians here. the younger Iranians are very pro-American, are the majority, and with time will succeed just as the people of Tunisa and other countries of the Arab Sprin.

Thanks for these links! Looks exciting. Can’t wait to see the story of former salve,Nat Love aka Deadwood Dick, brought to the big screen and played by an African American man instead of Jack Okie. These buried histories must be told! Can you imagine the stories of Ida B. Wells, Edmonia Lewis, Sojourner Truth as exemplars for our young women? There were always these strong African American male and female role models for our children, profiles in courage and character bringing our people forward as the Obamas are doing for this generation, but their stories have been obscured, denied, underplayed—now, in this age of Obama, is a good time to reinvigorate our communities—all communitie—with the true stories of diverse Americans. In 3 years I’ll be 70 years old. I’d love to see this before I die.

Yet another nail on rehugs’ vote rigging plans.

A Colorado judge has ruled in favor of implementing a Democratic-crafted redistricting map, dealing a blow to Republicans and imperiling the party’s hold on a House seat.

In the ruling, which came down Thursday evening, District Court Judge Robert Hyatt argued that the Democratic-drafted map more closely reflected the state’s population than the GOP-drawn plan. The competing maps wound up in court after the two parties were unable to pass a plan in the state Legislature earlier this year, leaving Hyatt to choose between the proposals.

Biden stopped at the north reflecting pool of the memorial Friday, accompanied by NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly. He walked to two sides of the pool and sought out the name of a Delaware victim. He said the memorial was impressive.

The ESPN guys loooooove PBO. They talked about how PBO was smiling and looking relaxed and was apparently really enjoying the game because he loves basket ball. The ESPN guy also said that FLOTUS is enjoying the game also and this is a family that takes their b-ball seriously because FLOTUS’s brother Craig Robinson is the coach of Oregon State (Beavers). One of the guys said he tweeted this question “Who is the best college basket ball coach?” And most of the tweets came back with Coach K and lo and behold he got a response from PBO and PBO said “well I might be a little biased…but Craig Robsinson is the best coach out there. Go Beavers!” and the ESPN guy said he chuckled. His colleague asked him if he tweeted his disagreement and he said nope. You don’t argue with the President of the United States. Alright time for Fringe guys, so I”m out, but I know if I miss anything ya’ll will post it.

Before I go, I just had to link to TNC’s last post on Penn State if for nothing else just so people can see the videos TNC posted in relation to the post. These videos are probably the best I’ve seen so far on sports radio and sports tv when discussing this mess since everything blew up.

I hope ya’ll check it out.

More On Penn State and Jerry Sandusky

I think Jon Ritchie really helps, again, with the question of “Why?” Most interesting is toward end, where Ritchie–contra all the “If I hadda had my gun” braggadocio–explains why he might not have been able to intervene. It’s interesting seeing this, as I was just telling Kenyatta, this morning, that I can’t even say what I would have done, in that moment.

None of the alleviates responsibility. The attempt to understand why is not the same as the attempt to excuse. McQueary had a moral responsibility to protect that kid. He did not. Taking that as given, I am still interested in the “Why?”

It’s also interesting to see Skip Bayless actually play journalist, if only for a second, instead of the character he’s become…

Little more from Ritchie who says the game shouldn’t even been played tomorrow–”I don’t think football matters anymore when you have victims of rape….We don’t even know what happened to that ten-year old victim. Where is he??”

            • November 11, 2011 at 9:23 pm

Moral Clarity. Internal Moral Compass. The answer came so easily because the internal infrastructure is there. No need to hem and haw — it’s clear what the right thing to do is. It’s a shame that you couldn’t find any of that moral clarity in the statements coming out of Penn State.

          • November 11, 2011 at 9:28 pm

CORONADO, California (Reuters) – With Europe mired in crisis, President Barack Obama is launching a charm offensive this week to hitch the U.S. economy to opportunities in Asia he hopes can help power the recovery he needs for re-election.

Obama, who was born in Hawaii and spent part of his childhood in Indonesia, will host leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, including Chinese President Hu Jintao and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, in Honolulu this weekend to seek to improve trade ties across the region.

the first lines of this Reuters report are misleading because they appear to imply that PBO is having this meeting with Asian leaders mainly because of the European cirsis and distancing this nation from Europe.

What anyone knows is that these events are scheduled many months in advance and this particular one could have been even more than one year ago (if I recall correctly). In fact I seem to remember some members of the MSM sneekering and complaining months (or maybe a year ) ago when the current location was chosen. then many seem to say that HI was only chosen because it was PBO’s place of birth

I won’t even link Ben Feller’s AP article about the trip. It is so nasty and negative. What’s Obama doing 10,000 miles away from home when he has policial and economic issues in crisis here at home, blah, blah, blah, blah. Typical for Ben Feller. He can’t get over the fact that W. is gone. He loved W. He said W. grabbed a bullhorn and united a country. I am just sick of this never-ending negative reporting re. Did Obama just mend the slow-motion U.S.-New Zealand Break-up?

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hongis with Maori elder Lewis Moeau during the Maori welcome (Powhiri) on her arrival at Parliament in Wellington, New Zealand / Reuters

Next week, President Barack Obama and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard are set to announce a new U.S. military presence at Robertson Barracks, an Australian base in Darwin. This will require a major expansion of the facility, and according to Mike Green, a former adviser to President George W. Bush, allow U.S. Marines “to be able to fly helicopters, drop out of planes and shoot at things.” Max Fisher has listed several reasons why this is a smart move for everyone involved, and the Obama administration deserves credit for anticipating distant threats in the region both obvious and abstruse. Australia is a stalwart ally of the United States, and has fought alongside U.S. troops in every major military campaign of modern times. Because of the UK-USA Agreement, the ANZUS Treaty, and fundamentally aligned goals in defense and foreign policy, setting up shop in Australia must have been as easy, diplomatically, as building a Walmart in Arkansas. The real question might be why it didn’t happen sooner, but that question is offset by the relief that it didn’t happen too late.

It’s a smart move for reasons beyond some hypothetical conflict with Beijing. An economically beneficial base and an American regional presence friendlier than the quiet and ongoing U.S. commando operations in the Philippines might well mend edges frayed by an exhausting decade of war. It might also bring neighboring New Zealand back into the full comity of ANZUS. Like a well-played game of Risk, this would solidify Western military interests in the Pacific.

    O. Snowe. . . I haven’t changed, my Party has. . .
“I’ve always been a Republican for the traditional principles that have been associated with the Republican party since I became a Republican, when I registered to vote. And that is limited government, individual opportunities, fiscal responsibility, and a strong national defense. So I think those principles have always been a part of the Republican party heritage. And I believe that I reflect those views and I haven’t changed as a Republican. I think more that my party has changed.

So is Snowe about to pull an Arlen Specter? That would be wildly speculative. But is it a sign that she feels out of step with her colleagues as they try to kill health care reform? I think so. And when you compare that to the fulsome praise she offered President Obama, and her statement commending the Baucus bill, it seems pretty clear that–at least in public–she’s leaning toward working with the Democrats on health care reform, specifically Baucuscare.

And she wants the GOP to know that she has an ace up her sleeve if they try to retaliate against her.

I USED TO admire the two female Senators from Maine but I am no longer in that camp because since just before the 2010 midterms, they have been largely silent and sticking with VOTE NO crap from their party thereby undermining ANY chance to move foward.

These two Senators are among those who owe their positions to a large number of Democratic voters yet now when the country is in crisis they are silent and voting with mcconell.

Can you imagine what level of presitige they would have had and how much progress the country could have made if just these two Main senators had broken with their party and voted for the job’s bill and debt ceiling before the markets were thrown in turmoil?

This disappointment I feel about Senator Olympia Snowe is just overwhelming. I didn’t always agree with her, but I did appreciate the fact that she worked with Senator Spector and Senator Collins on the Recovery Act. And she seemed to think it was important to address health care reform. Today, I hardly recognize her. As Steve Benen says, she has become a shell of her former self. It’s just embarrassing and a disservice to her constituents.

      SNOWE KEEPS FALLING

      ==================================================

There is some prime real estate in the political landscape for genuine GOP moderates who could have a significant impact. Instead, Congress has Olympia Snowe, who now bears no resemblance to the centrist she used to be.

If I had to guess, I’d say most mainstream voters in Maine have no idea of the extent to which Snowe has moved to the right, which is a shame. I wonder how those who supported her in the past would even recognize her anymore.

She had a lot of nerve appearing on an ad asking us to support small business. Does she not realize we know that she has voted repeatedly against helping small businesses hire more workers?

If you have picked up on the idea that Olympia Snowe might switch parties, then I’m guessing that Vice President Biden has already been chatting with her offline, lots of times (as they did with Arlen Specter). Haven’t been here much today so I don’t know your reference, but if she actually said her party has changed, that seems to be the first time she’s admitted it. I’m going to stay cautiously optimistic and look for more info.

I am so glad that our weather held back the rain and we presented the game in spectacular color! If POTUS keeps coming here to Southern California, we’re gonna have to build him a “West” Wing for sure!

The Carrier Classic was a thing to behold and I’m so proud of our Military, our Administration for allowing this to happen and for the Athletic Director at Michigan State who thought up this idea a couple of years ago and followed through to it’s successful completion!

CNN Report – gunshots fired NEAR White House

Shots were reported fired Friday night between the White House and the Washington Monument, setting off a flurry of law enforcement activity, a U.S. Park Police spokesman said.
The incident was reported shortly after 9 p.m., according to Sgt. David Schlosser, spokesman for the Park Police. Responding officers found an abandoned vehicle in the vicinity of the reported incident and were searching it “trying to figure out what happened.”
Schlosser noted that “no evidence” has been recovered to indicate shots were actually fired.
“I think, obviously, the thing that makes it of interest is simply the location, you know, a bit like real estate,” Schlosser told reporters. “The fact that this occurred outside the White House area. At this point, we don’t think that there’s any link to the White House.”
A Secret Service official who asked not to be identified reported that gunshots rang out as two cars sped on the National Mall. Agents stationed on 16th Street heard the shots, then saw the cars heading west on Constitution Avenue, the official said.
At least one witness saw that someone had “jumped out of the vehicle and ran,” but no one was captured, the official said.
An AK-47-style rifle was recovered in or near the abandoned vehicle, the official said.
In a brief appearance before reporters, Schlosser said he was not aware of any gun having been found.

NBA great Magic Johnson answered a few pool questions before tip-off at the Michigan State-North Carolina game aboard the USS Carl Vinson attended by President Obama and the first lady Friday night.

Johnson – an Obama backer — said he’s been watching the GOP debates and isn’t too worried about the president’s reelection chances against the Republican field.

“None of the candidates from the other side are looking good right now,’’ Johnson said.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s already legendary “oops” moment in Wednesday’s debate knocked the candidate down in Johnson’s estimation.

“I couldn’t believe that,’’ Johnson said. “I thought Rick would do a much better job … but every debate he keeps stumbling and stumbling and stumbling.’’

He added that he thinks businessman Herman Cain’s campaign won’t recover from the allegations of sexual harassment that have plagued him in recent weeks, and said that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney “just never seems to take charge.”

“Right now you’ve got to take charge of America,” Johnson said. “We need somebody tough and strong. So President Obama is the man right now. And I think that he can lead us.’’

President Obama – While it’s still 11-11-11 here in the Midwest, please accept my deepest gratitude on Veterans Day for caring enough about our military and their families to end the war in Iraq and make sure they are home for the holidays. That is a great gift not only to them, but to the rest of us.

Hopefully, soon, we can say that the “long national nightmare” of the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan is over.

CAMP TAJI, Iraq – The 40th Combat Aviation Brigade, called Task Force Condor, officially completed its mission in Iraq Nov. 9 when it cased its colors during a transfer of authority ceremony.

The 40th CAB transferred the mission to the 29th CAB, which will provide full-spectrum aviation operations during the final weeks of the drawdown of American forces in Iraq. Meanwhile, the more than 3,000 soldiers that fell under the 40th CAB’s command are headed home.

The 40th CAB began conducting full-spectrum aviation operations in theater support of Operation New Dawn March 6. Since then, it has performed over 19,000 aviation missions — everything from medical evacuations to VIP flights to movement of cargo and personnel to reconnaissance missions to convoy security. Its 275 fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft logged more than 121,000 flight hours in Iraq.

The TOA ceremony was held in an aircraft hangar on the airfield at Camp Taji. In attendance were Lt. Gen. Frank Helmick, deputy commanding general for Operations, United States, Forces-Iraq; Maj. Gen. Bernard Champoux, commanding general, United States Division-Center; Brig. Gen. Paul LaCamera, deputy commanding general for Operations, United States Division-Center; three Iraqi generals from Taji Air Base; and soldiers from the 29th CAB and the 40th CAB.

“It is worth noting that the 40th CAB commanded the largest aviation brigade ever mobilized,” Champoux told the crowd. “From March to May 2011, the 40th CAB was the only aviation brigade in all of Iraq.”

The 40th CAB’s helicopters, unmanned aerial systems and airplanes have been familiar sights in the skies of Iraq in 2011. Its aircraft played a critical role during the drawdown phase of the Iraq conflict by providing force protection and freedom of maneuver as American forces closed bases and moved out.

Col. Mitch Medigovich, 40th CAB commander and CH-47 Chinook pilot, thanked American and Iraqi guests for attending the ceremony. He then said he felt mixed emotions about casing his unit’s colors.

A statewide effort to recall Gov. Scott Walker gets under way Tuesday, and at least one organization plans to start the effort off with a bang: By holding a recall rally in front of the governor’s Wauwatosa home.

Planning for the rally has been under the radar. No press releases have been sent to the media and there isn’t much information about it online.

But organizers said Thursday that the rally is a go, with local, regional and national groups behind it.

We Are Milwaukee, an “alliance of community-based organizations, unions, faith communities and local leaders,” is planning to meet at 4:30 p.m. at the Juneau High School, 6415 W. Mount Vernon Ave. in Milwaukee, and march four blocks north to Walker’s residence at 520 N. 68th St.

There, the group says on its Facebook page, the marchers will collect signatures “in the front yard of Walker’s own neighbors who have volunteered their space to help us start off the recall right.”

Nobody knows how large the rally will be, but a group affiliated with the state teachers union is offering bus rides to the rally from Oshkosh and Beaver Dam.

Wauwatosa police aren’t sure what to expect, but they’re ready nonetheless, said Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry Weber.

Weber said Thursday he was aware that some kind of event would be taking place at Walker’s home and that police were beginning  to lay plans for it. No one had provided any estimate of how large a crowd might be expected.

Debbie Brent, president of the Wauwatosa Education Association, the union representing Wauwatosa public schools teachers, said Thursday that her group was part of the We Are Milwaukee effort. “The date has been set, and I’ll be informing members,” she said. “I’ll be calling people tonight.

“We are joining forces. It’s pretty grassroots.”

A canvasser for the AFL-CIO working a Wauwatosa neighborhood said that organization also was promoting the rally.

Tuesday is the kickoff day for signature-gathering in an effort to recall the governor that has been talked about since he announced his budget-repair bill in February, which repealed most collective bargaining rights for unionized public employees.

The principal organization promoting the statewide recall, Wisconsin United, also posted We Are Milwaukee’s notice but has not further publicized it. Wisconsin United and other groups have been promoting their main own kickoff rally in Madison on Nov. 19.

Attempts to reach organizers at We Are Milwaukee for comment were not immediately successful. Wauwatosa Patch was told through an intermediary that the organizers were still biding their time to alert the media to their plans.

The executive officer of the Southeast Region headquarters of the Wisconsin State Patrol, Lt. James M. Kicmol, said Thursday he was not aware of any planned rally at Walker’s house. The State Patrol has been providing security surveillance of Walker’s home since protests exploded in Madison and around the state, including what were perceived as threats to Walker.

Meanwhile, Winnebagoland UniServ, a group affiliated with the Wisconsin Education Association Council and the National Education Association, was offered two free bus rides to Wauwatosa on Tuesday.

A registration calendar advertised the “Recall Walker Bus” from Beaver Dam to Wauwatosa with pickup at 4 p.m. in the Shopko parking lot, 822 Park Ave., for travel to Wauwatosa for the rally and petition signing, and a bus picking up in Oshkosh at 3:45 p.m. at Oshkosh Aviation Plaza, 2175 S. Koeller St.

The rally will take place nine months to the day that about 1,000 people gathered at Walker’s home to protest his efforts to eliminate collective bargaining rights from public employees.
