****

AP: After a nine-day trip through Asia in which he showed command on the world stage, President Barack Obama is headed back to debt-deadlocked Washington, where he’ll confront fresh reminders of the limits of his power at home.

Obama departed from Bali’s international airport Saturday afternoon for a 21-hour flight that, factoring in time-zone changes, was to return him to the White House before dawn Sunday.

He’ll be arriving days ahead of a deadline for a congressional supercommittee to produce recommendations to attack the country’s deficit. But even though the president spoke to the supercommittee leaders from Air Force One as he headed out of town and urged them to get a deal, the panel is no further along than when Obama left Washington: frozen stuck along partisan lines.

…. Obama set out in his Asia-Pacific tour to deepen U.S. engagement in a fast-growing region that the White House views as increasingly critical to America’s security and economic prosperity. He achieved some successes, including progress on a regional free-trade deal that could pay off with U.S. jobs, and a new military agreement with Australia that will boost the U.S. defense posture in the region by deploying more marines and U.S. aircraft to Australia.

… On China, throughout his trip Obama sent both public and private signals to the rising giant, cementing American power in a manner seen to counter China, and scolding Chinese leaders about the need to play by the rules economically. On the final day of his trip, Saturday in Indonesia, Obama held a surprise meeting with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on the sidelines of an East Asia summit, focusing on the economic matters that have prompted disputes between the two major world powers.

Not forgetting:

….. next to Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda

… with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Australia’s Prime Minister Julia Gillard

Washington Post: President Obama and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held an unscheduled meeting Saturday morning on the sidelines of a summit of Asian leaders on the Indonesian island of Bali, and the two briefly discussed the territorial dispute in the South China Sea that has unnerved some of China’s neighbors.

…. The surprise session came at the end of Obama’s 9-day Asia trip, that began with a stop in Hawaii and took him to Australia’s northern coast and to the capital, Canberra….

…. Throughout the trip, Obama stressed that his mission was to find new markets in Asia for American products and link the U.S. recovery to this region’s dynamic growth.

But a strong subtext of the administration’s announced pivot to Asia has been shoring up longstanding alliances and reassuring traditional allies that the United States would help counter a newly assertive China, which is increasing its military spending and pressing its territorial claims in the region.

Hi Keith, I left a couple of messages for you in earlier threads. I’ve taken you off pending but please no more ‘the President is doomed’ stuff, or Romney-pushing, this just isn’t the place for that.

I’ll be back later with a new post everyone, it’s just as well I can’t post now because what I’d have to say about Chris Matthews would make your eyes water.

I agree with you COS, the best thing is he’s coming home to his family, the worst thing is he’s coming home to the same old crap on Capitol Hill, where all the talk now will be the gang of 12 and will they get some deal done by the deadline? Well I say not if the Democrats have to give in to the Republicans. It should be fair and balance with revenue included. Anyway have a safe trip back to D.C. Mr. President.

Good morning all. My God, this man never stops. It is amazing. He’s coming back to a bunch of babies after dealing with grown ups onthe world stage.

I really hope that PBO gets some good some well-deserved rest over the Thanksgiving holidays. No one deserves it more than he does.

CNN just said that a detailed report of PBO’s security detail was found in the gutter in Au. It detailed every moment and exactly where PBO would be. They showed a copy of the report. This is not good. Thank God he made it through.

COS, I saw that too, and I was not please at all. How could that happen? Is it the Secret Services fault? You can’t have things like that happening, That nutcase shooting at the White House tells us that. What makes me mad also is that story is about all the coverage the President trip have gotten from TeaNN. But thank God he is on his way back home safe and sound.

      November 19, 2011 at 8:54 am

I saw the report on CNN yesterday. It wasn’t his security detail per se that was found it was a report of the logistics of his itinerary (which included some aspects of security) in Australia that was supposedly found AFTER he left Australia. However I am highly skeptical about this CNN report for a number of reasons.

      1. The reporter had a smirk on her face and emphasized how “embarrassing” it would be for the WH if this were true.

      2. The reporter indicated that there were some inconsistencies about the details of what the report contain and didn’t contain.

If this were truly a serious issue, the reporter would not be standing there with a smirk, braying about how embarrassing this must have been for the WH. This sounds like a Murdoch-type manufactured story that the US news media needed.

CNN clearly needed some thing “negative” to report about this trip – and they latched on to this story without necessarily having all the facts or details (Balloon boy?). From the reporter’s tone of voice and facial expression, it appeared to be more entertaining than alarming for them. I have watched CNN morph from a fairly well-respected center-right network into a straight up anti-Obama rag.

Or some idiot staffer from the US or Australian side mishandled sensitive info.

        • 20 hopefruit2
          November 19, 2011 at 9:31 am

From the size of the report (it seemed like a huge book and not a few sheets of paper) this is unlikely to have been just “mishandled.” This is not something that could be simply dropped accidentally in a gutter – it’s too big and heavy. It’s not like it was found lying on a desk or chair inside a building (which could happen if they had forgotten it). Someone would have had to deliberately place it in the gutter. And if it were really very sensitive information, it would not be left in the hands of some random staffer. I still say that this story has elements of balloon boy in it. How come none of the WH press corps reported this issue? It’s still pretty much a CNN story.

And how would it be a poor reflection on the White House? Do these reporters even try to get in the neighborhood of logic? The White House doesn’t provide its own security detail. But why should common sense get in the way of smirking reportage, I guess.

    Good morning Chips ,

Thanks for all of the great coverage. You and the president should take time for a rest and a re-charge. The two of you have gone through many time zones fighting the good fight; he to bring jobs, forge alliances and to renew our profile; you, to combat the lies, misinformation and lack of information about this most unusual leader.

The photo of PBO in profile going up the steps to Air Force One looks like it should be in GQ. My, my, my!

  7. November 19, 2011 at 7:21 am

    Good Morning Chips.

    It’s my birthday!

And I have a tone of things to get done today. So when I’m all done I’ll come celebrate with you guys. :)

By the way, loving that second to last photo. Mr President looks incredibly handsome and fierce.

  8. November 19, 2011 at 7:25 am

With the highly successful trip behind him, I hope he can sleep on the plane and renew his strength for the week ahead. I can’t believe he’s actually traveling again to New Hampshire on Monday. Hopefully, he’ll have some quiet time with his family on Thanksgiving. I will be giving thanks for him on that day and also for the tens of thousands of hardworking loyal supporters that comprise the OFA. It was the genius of PBO to create the ongoing force of OFA, to staff it with some of the best minds in the business and to offer training for the armies of volunteers. The media can dream up all the fantasies they want about the president’s lack of support, but the facts on the ground tell a different story. The volunteer force is growing, which means that people are waking up and beginning to realize the treasure they have in PBO. And that’s something to be truly thankful for.

Good Morning everyone. If not for this blog…I would not even know that the President was not here this past week. It is now just after 7:00am and I am switching around all the news stations…examples of coverage

NBC: Cyber spying of entertainment personalities by stalkers

    ABC: Natalie Wood
    CNN: Health care Reform
    MSNBC: Occupy Wall Street
    Fox: Congress and insider trading

      • 72 nathkatun7
        November 20, 2011 at 12:34 am

Not only is the U.S. media hopeless, but it is also willful in either ignoring President Obama, or insisting on portraying him in negative light. I remember the days when the MSM followed Presidents traveling to foreign countries, reporting, in full, on all the details of their trips and showing how people in other countries greeted them. Take, for example, that picture of School children wanting to touch the President, and the young girl who wanted so much to hug the President. If the President was George W. Bush, or Bill Clinton, that photo would have been on the front page headlines in all the major papers and all the Network Evening News. During the Obama presidency the media’s MO in covering the president is: Headline all the negative news, even the manufactured ones; but ignore or understate all the positive news, even the most significant ones.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard joked druing a state dinner at Parliament House, Canberra that she wanted to make sure Barack Obama was well fed in her country.
“Mr President, I also wanted to say to you we’ve been a little bit nervous about tonight, because my partner Tim really got a talking to from the First Lady when we were in Hawaii. She said to him that you often don’t eat because you are so focused on your work … and she wanted to make sure that we fed you well in Australia. So, the only answer to that was to make sure that you had a hearty meal, and to make sure that there are six to seven hundred witnesses so that Michelle will know that we have been feeding you well while you’re here,” Ms Gillard said.

Leave him alone. He can take his message and sure as hell deliver it. That’s what’s going on. They’re acting like immature brats. They’re not going to cover anything he says or does. They’re mad that he invites local anchors for interviews, ignoring the reason why that is necessary—-because they are not reporting the truth, everything they say has a cynical, negative slant, every question is a ridiculous, vacuous, accusatory gotcha. Chuck Todd was on this trip and devoted zero time to the coverage of the trip. The first time he even mentioned Obama’s name was last night when he said he would be arriving home Sunday. It’s shameful.

The reason the White House went around them is because the media was not reporting. So they are still not reporting therefore they are non effect. The media can’t break the White House. If the White House has to go their jobs and be their own news agency so be it. They are more than capable. This is why we should not allow any corporation to become a dictator to the American people such as what the news media is rapidly becoming, full of their propaganda.

I think one way to stop them is to send them a message that we will no longer watch their crap. I think an organized massive boycott by President Obama’s supporters might send them a powerful message because the advertisers need our money too. We can be strategic about this by allowing a few of us, like our indomitable Utaustinliberal, to keep monitoring them and reporting back to us, something she is already doing so well. For me, I stopped watching the MSM a long time ago. I don’t want any more frustration in my life by listening to people I can’t talk back to. I still watch local news mainly for information about the weather and traffic.

“…..Myanmar’s government vowed on Saturday to address concerns raised by President Barack Obama, outlining far-reaching plans to make peace with ethnic rebels, gradually release more political prisoners and relax controls on freedom of expression.

But its government also expressed caution, stressing that reforms must be gradual to ensure a stable transition to democracy after nearly a half century of isolation and iron-fisted rule that ended when the army handed power in March to a civilian parliament stacked with former generals.”

@upwithchris is reporting that lobbying firm in D.C. with former Boehner aids hatching a plan to target Democratic politicians who side with OWS.

I still think the OWS needs to narrow its scope to a specific plan with specific demands and goals, but this is down right ugly. Boehner appears to be getting scared.

Is anyone running against John Boehner in Ohio? From the Democratic side. Boehner and a few others I could name need to go. His concerns should be about jobs, but it hasn’t. Jobs are the last thing on that cry baby mind.

They seem to be overlooking their most powerful weapon VOTING. I am still convinced that if they started a voter registration campaign while they are protesting and trying to make their voices heard it will scare the crap out of the politicians in Washington. They need to get educated about what the Democrats and the Republicans have been doing on their behalf and support the people that support their causes.

      • 98 dotster3
        November 19, 2011 at 9:15 am

That’s the reason I have lost patience with OWS even though I identify with their anger. I watched as they closed down Michigan Ave. in Chicago during rush hour the other night, which does their cause no good. It’s just making the public mad. It looks pointless. They need a stated purpose which will help effect change, a cause for good which will attract more people sympathetic to their cause. They’re losing more support than they’re gaining, enraging and disgusting nearby residents and businesses and viewers at home who see reports of same.

    • November 19, 2011 at 8:20 am

Not going to work. If they have vocally backed OWS or any of its concerns they are not going to back off. And any Democrat who’s stayed quiet is just going to stay quiet.

There is a diary right now on DKOS still trying to push that original examiner.com story by now suggesting that some private firm (accronym PERF) “with ties” to DHS was involved in the coordinated police attacks.

Another diary with information about the memo from the Chris Hayes segment was posted and made the rec list but that diary seems to have lost steam once more details about John Boehner’s association was posted. The other diary (PERF) is now gaining traction because it puts more emphasis on the government and less emphasis on the Republicans.

Morning Fred, no confirmation yet on whether he’s stopping over in Guam:

Government officials on Guam yesterday shied away from publicly answering whether President Obama might make a refueling stop on Guam — as early as today — on his trip from the Asia-Pacific region back to the White House.

The president was on the resort island of Bali, Indonesia, yesterday for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations meeting and was expected to arrive back in the White House on Sunday, according to wire reports.

Air Force One could refuel somewhere in the Pacific, but Andersen Air Force Base was mum on whether the president’s plane will gas up on the Guam air base.

I am watching @Upwithchris too and he has a really good program and people on today. My brain is a little fuzzy this morning, had a rough night.
Thanks Chips for all the coverage of the Presidents trip. I loved all the articles and pictures and the comments from all the TOD community.
Have a wonderful day everybody and a safe and Happy Thanksgiving. Giving thanks for our President. I made a great choice when I worked for him in 2008 and will do the same for 2012. Yes We can :) :)

Anita Dunn is on up with chris and boy is she fierce. She called out the GOP and Paul Ryan in particular. She said that it’s disingenuous for people like Ryan to give a speech lamenting income inequality. It just goes to show how scared they are of PBO. She also said that OWS should know that PBO passed the strictest wall street financial reform and it’s the republicans who are trying everything possible to weaken the law. She said they should be asking and demanding of the republicans why they are blocking the confirmation of the head of the CFPB Richard Cordray. She pointed out that PBO and the Democrats are the only ones doing anything credible about jobs. That the American Jobs Act is a good bill and will provide jobs. Chris said that it seems as though enthusiasm for PBO amongst his volunteers has waned. Anita said no, that he is categorically wrong. Enthusiasm has NOT waned. That there are thousands of people on the ground. Our grassroots organization is strong and because the media is unwilling to conduct proper research, they just automatically assume that grassroots enthusiasm has waned. She also said that if enthusiasm has waned why is that small donor contributions to PBO is off the roof? He’s beating all GOP opponents in small donor contributions and he’s even beating his own 2008 record. She said that the number of new small donor contributions have skyrocketed and she pointed to the Washington Post article which highlighted this fact.

She was fantastic! Hope they send her out more.

    • November 19, 2011 at 8:22 am

UT, I saw that. I was clapping. She was succinct and to the point. Was so glad to hear her set the record straight about PBO and small donors. And I noticed everyone was mum. No interruptions. She was forceful.

      Yep, she was fantastic!!

    • November 19, 2011 at 8:26 am

She was great. If the Obama campaign lobby the pl, they are receptive.
Chris was very nice in the interview, and allowed Anita to say the truth!

Totally agree ut. I was watching that segment and I thought Anita Dunn was terrific. Her responses to all of the questions were spot on. She just makes sense. I certainly hope we will be seeing more of her.

BTW, what’s the deal with Laura Flanders. She is really annoying. I don’t think I have ever heard her say anything positive about President Obama.

Agree about Laura Flanders—-annoying and can’t muster up one positive thing to say about Obama. When pundits can’t recognize any good re. Obama, not one thing, then they are signalling that their perceived problems lie within them. They have closed minds. They have “issues”.

Trust me folks. When you hear people like Chris Hayes, Maddow or Chris Matthews or anyone in the media talking about Pres. Obama not connecting or losing his base, they are talking about themselves and the people they hang around with. They may be very well read on what goes on in the world but clueless about what people are actually feeling and saying on the ground.

Thanks for the wonderful Report. I admire and respect Anita Dunn. I am glad she stood, as she always does, for truth and in defense of President Obama. I am also grateful for your reports on what goes on in MSM. I am boycotting the electronic wing of the MSM. Your reports, and others, are my only source of information about what they are up to. You do such a wonderful job, UT!

  19. November 19, 2011 at 8:23 am

Btw- the Prez goes out of Town and DC is talking about the debt again.
I swear, they all want to only talk about the debt not jobs!
The timing of the Prez trip overseas was perfect.
Notice, the Republicans are trying to pull the Prez in on all the debt fun?

    • November 19, 2011 at 8:37 am

They can talk all they want, but I don’t think people are paying attention to the debt issue–it’s yesterday’s news. I’ll bet that few people know of or care about the Super Committee. When someone talks about jobs, they listen. But the time when everybody was talking about the debt is gone. For most people, it’s been there, done that. So let the R’s rattle on about a dead issue. And you know what, I’m not worried about whether the press covers the president’s trip. When PBO feels it’s right HE’s going to talk about it and the stupid media can’t stand in his way. I’ll bet it’s a big chunk of the state of the union. And I’ll bet there will be campaign ads about his success abroad. The other day, I was talking to some younger–18 to 20 year old–kids and they don’t watch the mainstream media. They get news, like we do. From sources they like on the net and social networks. The bloviators on tv are a dying breed–like dinosaurs roaring on the earth, but stumbling on the way to extinction.

hey Jovie – I think we should feel more sorry for the American people who are subjected to an increased level of ignorance from these jackals. That is why I appreciate spaces like TOD, POU, TOAITR, TPV and the like.

The crap produced by other outlets that the media wants to pass off as journalism isn’t worth the stuff that falls in the birdcage that they are lined in.

        • November 19, 2011 at 9:30 am

Why feel bad for him if he could care less? Is it so important that these Beltway dweebs mention his name? Check out local coverage which has been exceptionally favorable. As Jackie said these folks are on their way out. Nobody cares if a third rate journalist on a 4th rate cable network talks about the President. People around the globe are getting their news elsewhere. Only we know who any of these people are. The American people may not know the specifics but they know what this man is doing and trying to do.

          BTW Good morning everyone.

He will not suffer as much as the American people. President Obama truly loves us and he is doing everything in his power to make this country better than how he found it. He needs us to be strong and not waver in our confidence in him. He is the best president ever. Believe it with every thing in you. If we continue to strongly believe in our President, and work hard, behind the scenes, these ignorant haters in the media will be taught a lesson once the President is re-elected. They will realize how useless they are. Now that there other sources of information, all we need to do is spend less energy on the MSM while focusing more of our time and energy, spreading the good news about our president, through sites like this one. Every chance I get I make sure that I tell all the misinformed people to check out blogs like TOD, TPV and POU to find out the information that MSM is not giving them.

How do he know that Michelle and the family aren’t happy? I have said it before I think Chris Matthews has some mental issues. It was Michelle idea to our kids and the obesity issue. Just like it was her idea to work with the military and their spouses. Ask Matthews did he see Michelle and Barack at the basketball game on that aircraft carrier? Congress persons have called him a gansta, socialist, etc. Some have talked about impeachment, some expressed unprecedented opposition and criticism to his Libya strategy ,even in the Democratic party. The Black Congressional Caucus ,Barney Frank and a whole host of others have criticised him unjustly. Their favorability is at 9%, why should he want to consort with that group especially when they have shown only disdain?

As for the Press, if they acted like proper journalist they would be so treated.
Go away Chris Mathews, you are delusional and your time in the limelight has long past.

Good morning all. I sit here reading, just absorbing what you guys are posting, but this I had to comment on. How can anyone expect this slobbering idiot to be anything but a bonafide racist when he hangs around the likes of Buchanan. Please, please people, don’t ever take anything he may occasionally say as a positive toward PBO as a good thing. I notice how he is sometimes presented on this site when someone thinks he is “telling the truth”. Really? Once a person shows you who they are, believe them. Bigots have been successful for ages, pretending to be noble when in reality they are laying a foundation for acceptance just to enable them to poison the well with the lies
they know will advance their agenda. For all these lies, CM should be roundly denounced with a fervor and his obvious hatred for black people exposed. How the hell can he sit and lie about FLOTUS? He has sunk to a new low, so yes, he hates black people because their is no other reason for him to make such a hateful accusation. I don’t really think it’s racism. I think it’s furor that President Obama ran out of patience with their unfair and unprofessional behavior and has quietly gone about his business without them, giving opportunity to local news in their stead, proving he doesn’t need them, diminishing their worth. Their over-inflated egos have been hit. I also think Tweety is very easily influenced and swayed, and I suspect some with ulterior motives have been feeding him.

You are much more generous than I. I find it questionable that someone could get so riled about a man, doing his job and so doing for the good of people like him as an American. M..f.. Matthews because he has been around much too long to be “easily influenced” by any adult besides himself. He has a show called Hardball, so what does he do when he is roundly ignored by PBO? He can’t hang hard. He’s a piece of shit and like I said, IMO this is, anyone who hangs around with Buchanan, no matter the supposed balanced views, is as bigoted as he is. Otherwise, he would not have the need to associate with Pat who consistently spews his hatred of black folk. Guilt by association. If he can’t check his ego to not allow himself to go so far as insulting the gracious First Lady, he needs to be called out for, if nothing else, his obvious lack of respect for the office of the President and the First Lady. Fuck him.

I agree with your comment, dotster. Beltway pseudo-liberals talk to other beltway pseudo-liberals who are the ones that really are in the bubble. They aren’t feted by the Obama WH, thus they’re projecting their perceived slights on all of America. There’s zero self-examination.

When the #1 concern of America is jobs, yet they don’t mention- even in passing- about how PBO has concentrated on cementing alliances and TRADE in these emerging markets, is nothing short of malpractice.

I agree with you, EDP4BHO. He swings over to the left from time to time to keep people watching. If he stayed over on the dark side all the time, then the moderates would stop listening to him and he’d lose market share. He is a full on hater and demonstrates that to us on a DAILY basis, yet people continue to watch for those little nuggets he tosses out. It’s like playing a slot machine. If it paid off all the time it would get boring. Humans are wired to seek out periodic rewards. That’s why he can sucker people into being ‘addicted’ to watching him: the periodic rewards. He’s a master at it.

Chris Matthew’s is definitely not racist. I watched him time and again be angered and repulsed by racism displayed and excused by republicans. He is however, an idiot who does not weigh the things that come out of his mouth. He is very shallow, so he likes brashness and chest thumping empty patriotism. He prefers a president who plays a macho and a tough guy by the way he talks and his costumes (Bush and the flight suit), instead of substance. We all know that President Obama will not give him a pretend cowboy, instead he is all substance, intelligence and deliberation. He does not need to rely on gimmicks to satisfy or to impress the bubble heads on teevee, like tweedy.

Finally, racism is a disease in this country and everyone who says stupid shit against the President is not necessarily racist. We need to level it, only when it’s warranted, otherwise it loses its meaning.

Anya – Chris Matthews does have racist views. You hear it when he repeats ignorant shyt about minorities all the time but can’t see it because he believes because he once hailed a cab for a black man in NY exempts him from that category.

So it is beyond our President. PO just happens to be the catalyst for folks who realize just how far we have moved as a nation and now want their country back.

But don’t dare go after the family. Leave Michelle and the kids alone. There was no need of going after Michelle, or bringing the kids into it. No excuse at all.

I surely hope you are not accusing me of playing that dastardly card, Anya. But the sublimety of racism is that it masquerades itself sometimes in liberalese. Who would have believed Pat Buchanan was as racist as he has come to be known when one looks at his participation in the election night highlights of PBO’s victory? Pat had on his shades and swayed right along with Robinson and the rest of the crew that night, to Sign, Sealed, Delivered, and just whooped it up. I even heard him say a couple of positive things about PBO, only to later release that dastardly book of his, espousing the virtues of whiteness. Chris can be angered all he wants, but I believe he takes issues because of his idealism and belief in the so-called American dream (thus his current commercial re PBO), yet he does not display the same patience with this President as he rather calmly discusses the past ones. And he definitely crossed the line in debasing First Lady Michelle, who is not running for office. Why her?

Vero804, I love the way you are going to overcome negative energy by channeling positive energy to make you feel better. This is something I should do often if only I could stop hiding behind my age. I really think that our best response to Chris Matthews’ negativity is to focus on doing positive things and avoid being consumed with anger. Remember Matthews has no core. During the Lewinsky affair Matthews was one of the most vitriol attackers of President Clinton. Now he can’t wait to praise Bill Clinton and call him President of the World. If I were Romney, I would hire Chris Matthews because he understands, like Romney does, the importance of swaying with the wind.

It’s seriously time to stop asking for apologies from these people and just stop watching. Obviously, I didn’t see the Tweety rant, but if he said all the stuff folks here are saying he did, why is that not enough to stop watching?! What in the world is it going to take. He attacked the First Lady and their daughters. How is an apology going to change anything? MSNBC gets worse and worse with every week. Every week there’s a new outrageous thing someone on that channel says and every week we’re outraged.

No, I don’t want an apology. I want us Obots to use this situation as the final straw and to quit breathing life into that channel. We have let then yank the football away from us too many damn times. This is done on purpose. They throw us a bone one day and we cheer. And then the next day, you get Tweety attacking the First Lady.

When are we gonna wake up and stop feeding the beast that is MSNBC?

I agree 100% Apparantly some ppl are addicted to the roller coaster ride of extreme emotions the tv pundits provide. I haven’t watched in years outside of clips here and there on the internet. But I do feel obligated to write and call them out in response to what I hear from others to add to the numbers of ppl calling them out.

Still I don’t understand why ppl keep giving them hits. Negative attention is still attention and we know as long as negative behavior keeps getting attention it is unlikely to stop.

I long for the day when they say BS and absolutely NO ONE repeats it or responds. Sigh

Thank you for expressing this so simply, Itgurl. People here often say they’re frustrated/they’ve had enough, etc. etc. then seem to go back for more. I often feel like I’ve had enough of us having enough yet going back for more on a daily basis. I used to be an avid, avid Rachel M fan who couldn’t miss a show until the night she eviscerated me by insulting the President in an unprovoked situation because his decision hadn’t gone the way she wanted. IMO that night she attacked PBO’s character instead of his decision. This was before her DADT comments, but I found her commentary that night so disrespectful and uncalled for that I could no longer look at her in the same way, and so I cut her off (except for when someone here shares a clip, and even then I’m always ‘on guard’). IMO we poison our spirits far too often with the repetition of the vitriol these folk can’t seem to contain. They only seem able to control their hate for a day or two and if we let them they’ll take us down with them.

I do think that the strategy of going around the Press Corp that the President’s has started using is an effective way to tell the media to do their jobs or they’ll be ignored. I also think that we CAN work around them by …a) using a one-to-one strategy, and sharing our knowledge of the President’s accomplishments whenever opportunity presents itself (as many here have been doing)…and b) engaging with our own local media to make sure the truth we know gets out when it isn’t, or expressing appreciation when it does.

“It’s seriously time to stop asking for apologies from these people and just stop watching.” I completely agree with you, Itgurl 29. That is exactly what I did, since 2009, and I have felt better ever since. Obviously I still have high regard of those who continue to watch these self-important, delusional, idiots. But, I also still think that the only way the MSM will realize that they’ve gone way overboard is for the supporters of President Obama to stop watching them. I don’t think that right wingers and teabaggers, who are so loyal to FOX News, can sustain the media ratings of both MSNBC and CNN. I say lets boycott them and lets see if the right wingers viewers they are courting will be enough to sustain the viewer ratings of all the three cable channels: FOX, CNN and MSNBC. My view is that they can’t. MSNBC tried that during the Iraq invasion. But it quickly realized that it couldn’t compete with the real deal: FOX News. That is why MSNBC turned to Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Ed Shultz and others. It was also why Matthews, who had aligned himself with right wingers during the Clinton impeachment, and the initial years of the Iraq war, tried to all of a sudden sound liberal. My point is that if all of us who support the President boycotted these unprincipled media people who routinely join in bashing and lying about the President, I doubt that they would be able to sustain their viewer ratings by relying on appeasing right wingers. I also don’t think that the holier than thou progressives have the numbers to sustain their viewer ship. I say that based on what happened to that pompous idiot, Cenk, Uygur. I am actually going to start watching Rev. Al Sharpton because he is the only one advancing my interests. I want his viewer ratings to go up. There is one thing I am determined not to repeat: I won’t let the MSM media stress me to appoint when I start doubting that President Obama will be re-elected. My focus right now working to convince new people to support him. Also, any chance I get, I will push back against all those trying to falsify history so as to justify their biased attacks on President Obama.

Thanks utaustin for the heavy pushback. Matthews did cross the line – it’s one thing to express your opinion and give a political analysis. But this went way beyond politics. It was a personal direct attack on the entire family, with nothing based in fact. Matthews has not used that level of vitriol in any of his criticisms of Herman Cain or other Republican candidates. People were rightfully outraged and disgusted and I think Matthews should be taken to task for this.

        • November 19, 2011 at 12:22 pm

This is about POTUS’s successes this past week.. keep in mind this is the usual. Anytime POTUS is successful- the media whacks at him for something entirely unrelated.. it’ll be negative POTUS all weekend now- and nary a word about what he just spent the week doing on behalf of this country. And to attack FLOTUS is their icing on the cake- when they attack FLOTUS they are desperate for a response from President Obama- that is their goal- to rile him up. Instead it is we who need to get fierce and go after Chris Matthews. He is & always has been a blowhard piece of sh*t. He has never been on the left, just as msnbc is not on the left.. they throw bones- such as w/ Rachel- and Lawrence, but lets get honest here and realize that at no point are they consistent in any support of this President. WE are the left, we are liberals and we pay attention to what this POTUS is doing, to what this White House has accomplished… and yet we’re all just flabberghasted for 3 years while the Political Left fails to notice, or see what we see…. and thats because they are NOT the LEFT. They are doing a job: and make no mistake their job is to take down this Democratic President of Color. Pure and simple.. and put another Republican into office.. and that includes Chris Matthews and Rachel and every other dang “pundit”.

We also need to report his attacks on FLOTUS to AttackWatch.. and really possibly we should all call in, as well as email & tweet against Chris Matthews… but lets not make the mistake ever of believing msnbc is anymore liberal in their views than any of the other trash networks.. they do employ Pat Buchannon.

I realize I’m biased because I detest all the media/journalists/pundits.. they are nothing but liars and propagandists, imo… I’ve seen nothing/ read nothing in 3 years that changes my mindset. I learned during the primaries & the election that I could listen to an Obama speech- hear every single word with my own ears, view him with my own eyes… and then proceed to watch the media lie/spin/BS to the American public, knowing that most Americans probably didn’t get to actually hear the speech themselves. I gave up on the media as soon as POTUS was elected.. and in these three years have read what they say- and it has only worsened: the lies, the BS.. and the pundits like Matthews – who carry weight- with the folks coming home from work each night- listening to the news over their dinners… being LIED to.. and for many American this is allllll they know of our President and First Lady. In my opinion the “media” is really the biggest danger to this country.

I thought it was equally disgusting what he said about PBO. He stated his misguided feelings as fact. There was no truth in anything he said. He’s making up stuff about the President of the United States, trying to damage him and his re-election chances. It was all nonsense. I just have a strong feeling it’s Fineman planting these ideas in his head. Tweet has been harshly firing off these questions to everyone who comes on his show, “When’s the last time you talked to President Obama?” etc. When someone says “last week” or “I can get through to President Obama any time I have a concern”, he further challenges them, and then when he gets no satisfaction, he just drops it and moves on. He’s been trying to prove this charge that he dreamed up out of thin air, and it has not borne out, but that hasn’t stopped him, does not let facts get in the way.

          • November 19, 2011 at 2:05 pm

agree dotster, the lies about POTUS are outrageous.. however, I think he dismisses much of that.. when they go after FLOTUS & the children- it I think is more about trying to get a reaction out of POTUS or the Whitehouse.. there is a desperation to these charges.. again, which I think are all about taking any spotlight off of POTUS’s major successess this week- they throw FLOTUS in there purely for filling up the sink before they toss it out. This election will be completely bloody and it will be All Media making the way for a republican election, imo.

Agree that they ramp it up after President Obama’s outstanding successes. It’s pretty sick. And agree there was no reason to throw FLOTUS in there too other than to infuriate and to try to hurt back, to get even for perceived slights. It’s so juvenile. It’s like a kid yelling, “Your mama’s ugly!” or some such nonsense.

Utaustinliberal, you are the best! I am overwhelmed with your wisdom at such a young age. I pray and hope that many in your generation share your passion about this President who, I am convinced, is really focused on building a strong foundation for your future. My support for President Obama has to do with my admiration of his intelligence, steadiness, compassion and his dedication to inclusiveness. But much more importantly, for the sake of my daughter and other young people in my family, I am impressed with the President’s determination to build a more sustainable economy and and an educational system that will benefit your generation and the generations to come. When I was growing up, older people sacrificed so much to make it possible for us to get an education and do better than they had done. But then came Reagan’s 1980 which emphasized selfishness and looking out for “me” #1 approach. Ironically, it is President Obama who, by focusing on the future generations, is trying to take us back to the days when parents sacrificed in order to make the lives of their children better. On the other hand, the teabaggers, and the right wing GOP, who talk about getting their country back, want to go back to the recent “Me, Me,” generation of the Reagan era which pretty much laid the foundation for the economic collapse we have gone through.

I truly enjoy your fearless commentaries. And, I wish you all the best in your College work. I have a feeling that, god willing, I will be around to hear that you are a star on the political stage fighting to carry on and improve on President Obams’s policies.

President Obama knows what Chris Matthews is all about so he will be promptly ignored. In an interview with brian Williams, Pres. Hi gobrooklyn, yes, POB said those words while doing the interview with Brian Williams: At the White House w Brian Williams a couple of years ago. You are so right. I do not remember the exact name by the above name is close.

POB was in the limo with Brian Williams and Williams asked him what he does when the family is gone to bed, and he is surfing the channels? “Do you stop and watch what MSNBC, etc., and the pundits are saying about you etc., POTUS said something like this: NO. I Do Not Watch that stuff … Hey, I know Pat Buchann, Chris, Keith, those guys have something to do, and if I can’t learn from the conversation, I do not watch. My phrasing but pretty close.

In oder words, POB flat out burst Brian Williams’ ego bubble. If you watch the clip, Brian was pretty surprise that POB had the nerves (which Brian should have known by then that POTUS already did have those nerves and much more) to shut Brian up. No, I do not have time for the clowns. (My words.) Point, since those names were spoken out, yes POTUS named names, Tweety has had an attitude that you have when you have to go to the’Out House’ late at night. Trust me, that is it. Tweety holds deep seated attitudes towards this President. I hope someone can find the clip, please.HZ

So agree. I just stated such above. We need to see and call it what it is. They never gave PBO the grace and acknowledgement other presidents have received. Can we name a few:

He’s aloof. He doesn’t connect. He’s timid. He’s weak. He should be more like……(fill in the blank). He has a problem with white people. He’s the anti-Christ. He’s an elitist, a socialist. He ordered Dijon mustard. A Hawaii vacation is too elitist. He’s not black enough. He wasn’t born in America. He’s an apologist for America. He can’t lead.

And this is only about one fifth of the shit we’ve heard over the years. I say, if you join in with the slights, you are no better than Fox. I do not watch MSNBC, CNN or some of my local news when it comes to anything regarding PBO. I turn on Rev Al and mute just to give him the ratings. I do not need to hear the smears.

I assure any one who might have reservation about the boycott that you will still be up to date as long as you are willing to spend time checking out different sources of information on the Web. As I said earlier, UT and others can still be our eyes and ears, monitoring and reporting on what’s up with the MSM. At the same time, once CNN and MSNBC realize that many of us who are strong supporters of the President and Democratic party have lost confidence in them I am sure they will have to change to respond to our interests. After all we are still consumers. Advertisers on their shows can’t completely write us off. Besides, when it comes to attracting right wing viewer ship FOX will still be the winner; no matter how hard CNN and MSNBC tries to outfox them.

To repeat, my point is: if Chris Matthews and others realize that the vast majority of supporters of the President, because they are disgusted with the antics of Matthews and others, are not watching them, they will either change their behavior or apply to work for FOX News. By the way, I also think we should publicly announce an organized boycott and document the reasons why we are boycotting; and clearly state specific changes we want to see implemented. Absent of unified mass boycott, I still I plan to continue my personal boycott of Cable and Network news channels. I am convinced that my boycott is good for both my mental and physical health; But I also realize that my individual boycott will probably not make a dent on their viewer ratings. Only a unified mass boycott could force change in their behavior.

So glad people are pushing back. Those Washington insiders think the world revolves around them. They can’t see past their noses, and think only THEY matter. THEY are the ones who don’t connect with people. I emailed Chris and told him so. I also emailed CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News and asked why they didn’t lead with the President’s trip. I reminded them that every time GWB took a trip the press covered every breath he took. I didn’t mention that he embarrassed us every breath he took. I strongly suggested that they should be journalists and start doing their job, and that millions of people don’t even watch, but get their news from other sources because they are so lame.
Well…it made me feel better, even if it doesn’t change anything. However, I know they COUNT comments from various sides. I believe Right wing people write regularly, so they get a skewed view of reaction. The more we write, email, tweet, etc, the more they will have to pay attention to us. Eventually, their “reporting” will change, I believe.
Good for President Obama going around them. All that stuff about Michele is an out and out lie….look at her eyes, Chris! That tells the story. I dont’ think they ever READ anything but what they write. And as for Fineman’s “sources” they are, I believe. a figment of his imagination.

Oh my—–a couple just rang my doorbell, said they were from the local Catholic Church, had on name tags proclaiming the same, said they were here to talk to me, and give me literature, about the war science was waging on people of faith. What????!!! I began closing the door at that point and said, “You’ve knocked on the wrong door. I side with people who believe in science.” The guy said, “Oh, you do?”, like that was astonishing. I said, “Yes, I like smart people.” Door shut and locked. I have a feeling that was going to lead to something political, but I did not feel like wasting any more of my time to find out. Unbelievable. We’ve got some real doozies in this country.

Hey, dotster3, I would have done exactly the same thing you did. I thought that the Catholic Church, after the vile persecution of Galilei, had by now come to its senses and realized that faith based on false dogma is like a castle built on sand! As much as I appreciate people of faith, I just don’t see why religious dogma should be used to discredit empirical science. For Example: dogma, in Galilei’s time definitively proclaimed that the earth was flat. We now know that that was a flat out lie! While I think that faith in GOD allows us to marvel at this seemingly infinite Universe, claims of faith, which really on religious dogma, should never be allowed to stand in the way of empirical science. In the 21st Century, religious dogma must not be allowed to force the country to go back to the practices of the centuries, before the mid-twentieth century, when women had absolutely no say so about their reproductive rights. For a Church that encourages priest and nun celibacy, it’s truly ironic that this same Church is so bent on promoting forced procreation on women, including unmarried women or women forcibly rapped. This is not faith. This is pure dogma! If procreation was so holly, how come priests and nuns are exempted from partaking in this most holly enterprise? We must insist on distinguishing between faith and dogma. After all, it was the priestly dogma that led to the Protestant Reformation. Sadly, the same people who sought to escape from the dogma of the Catholic Church have ended up creating their own dogmas and passing them off as Religious Faith!

And in other news, that doesn’t involve the spittle-soaked ravings of Chris Matthew, it looks like the politicians that President Obama will be running against, have a trouble connecting with their voters. That is a significant story. Why can’t they close the deal?:

“Herman Cain, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are in a dead heat as the top choices for Iowans likely to attend the Jan. 3 Republican presidential caucuses.

A Bloomberg News poll shows Cain at 20 percent, Paul at 19 percent, Romney at 18 percent and Gingrich at 17 percent among the likely attendees with the caucuses that start the nominating contests seven weeks away….

Polls in Iowa and New Hampshire — site of the nation’s first primary — are better barometers of the candidate field than national surveys because voters in those states are paying more attention and are aware of their early role in shaping the Republican race….

    No Exciting Choices

Poll participant Nate Warwick, 34, a machine operator at a packaging factory who lives in Story City, Iowa, is leaning toward Romney, primarily because he thinks he has the best chance of defeating President Barack Obama in 2012. Still, he’s not excited about his choices.
“There’s nobody out there who is really grabbing my attention, wholly,” he said. “I don’t think the Republican Party has a candidate that can beat Obama right now.”

Oh my, Chips you have been busy, again. Thank you so much for the positive pictures and posts. Looks like TODers are on fire today. It is only 10 a.m. and there are more than 200 comments!

I haven’t read all the comments above yet, but thought I would post the clip from Chris Hayes’ show this morning about the exclusive memo on the plan to take down OWS. We all knew it would happen, because that is what the Republican leaders and their handlers do, but the lobbyist firm happens to be made up of two of John Boehner’s former aides and they tout it on their website.

Most of all, it is a reminder that not voting at all or voting against our own interests is a disasterous mistake.

      From the article:

“The memo indicates that CLGC would research who has contributed financial backing to OWS, noting that, “Media reports have speculated about associations with George Soros and others.”

“It will be vital,” the memo says, “to understand who is funding it and what their backgrounds and motives are. If we can show that they have the same cynical motivation as a political opponent it will undermine their credibility in a profound way.”

I wholeheartedly agree with this aspect of the memo. Let’s get to the bottom of who is financing OWS:

“(NEWSER) – Robert S. Halper is the largest single donor to the Occupy Wall Street movement, having donated $20,000 to the anti-corporate Adbusters magazine, which launched the protests. The weirdest thing about Halper is not that he’s a retired Wall Street trader who used to vice chair the New York Mercantile Exchange, or that he’s a 1-percenter. No, the weirdest thing about Halper is that in addition his Adbusters donation, he also donated the maximum allowed $2500 to the presidential campaign of corporate favorite Mitt Romney.”

The corporate media has an agenda and it’s to take down this President. Instead of writing a letter, turn it off. If liberals would stop watching MSNBC and acting like it’s legit and somehow better than Fox, it would kill the channel. Writing a letter won’t change a thing. It may feel cathartic, but it will not get POTUS fair coverage on that channel.

      Just stop watching.

      • 314 nathkatun7
        November 20, 2011 at 6:12 am

Indeed! What we need right now is to go underground! Ignore the media. Focus on organizing and voter registrations, especially for young people who have turned 18 since the 2008 elections; educating voters on how to fight back against all these Republican laws aimed at denying them the right to vote; and of course sending $5, 10, or 20 dollars to the campaign. I am absolutely convinced that the entirety of the mainstream media is bent on seeing President Obama defeated. At this time, it’s really a waste of time trying to ask Chris matthews and others for apology. It’s not going to happen. Our best pay back is to ignore them for the most part, while allowing some of our most gifted writers to report to us what they are up to so we can figure out how to counter them. We must treat the media the way lawyers treat hostile witnesses. We have to get away from the false illusion, cleverly calculated by our corporate masters, that MSNBC is on our side. To be sure we have Al Sharpton, but even as great as he is still, IMHO, an illusory window dressing that must never be allowed to distract from behind the scene mass organizing and mobilizations that is focused on recruiting and registering new voters. While I will not discourage people from writing letters to people like Chris Matthews, I just think that the best I can do for the re-election of the President is to contribute some dollars whenever I can and to help in recruiting and mobilizing new voters. That way, when the President is re-elected, I can make my contribution in exposing the uselessness of people like Chris Matthews.

I’m waiting to see the clip of Matthew’s rant this morning about President Obama and his family,…it’s not posted on MSNBC yet. I’m livid already, just reading the comments from people who saw it.

I saw on twitter this posted by a very conservative woman, I don’t know her name, I saw her a few times on Real Time when I was watching.

”Chris Matthews: I don’t think the Obamas are happy in the White House. I don’t sense the gratitude. The American people can see that.”

Can someone explain to me what does it mean….”I don’t sense the gratitude”.

    Towards what? towards who?

What the hell does he means by that….it’s crazy.

    • 316 itgurl_29
      November 19, 2011 at 12:51 pm

A lot of people like Chris Matthews think that black people do not deserve nice things. We don’t deserve to live in nice neighborhoods, we don’t deserve to have out kids go to great private schools, we don’t deserve to have happy marriages, we don’t deserve to wear fine clothes, and we certainly don’t deserve to be in the White House. So when we do have or achieve those things, it must be out of sheer LUCK, not hard work. And therefore, being that we’re only their because Jesus chose to smile on us and not because of our own blood sweat and tears, we should be “grateful”, because we really don’t deserve it. We should be “grateful” to be so “lucky”.

Peopel like Chris Matthews would NEVER suggest that a white person be “grateful” for the things they’ve achieved. Because if a white person is successful, it is understood that he/she got there through hard work and perseverance and is thus deserving of the spoils of that hard work and perseverance. People like Chris Matthews believe that people of color only get these things through dumb luck.

    • November 19, 2011 at 12:51 pm

I have been a subscriber for many years, but my husband and I decided to end our subscription when you failed to fire Mark Halperin after his unprofessional behavior in calling President Obama a “dick” on national television. Halperin was projecting. He is neither objective nor any good at his job of supposed political analysis for Time. What he writes is lazy speculation that we can hear for free at the corner bar. It’s obvious that the “gratitude” that Matthews mentioned is want he personally wants from the PBO and his wife. He wants his invites like Cornell West does. As much as the Obamas have opened up the WH to the people and not the DC elite, they are hot pissed and will continue with this from now on into the election. FLOTUS loves being around people (ordinary people, service men and women, children). She cares less about schmoozing with Congress and their spouses that want a tour of their residence. The President lights up when he’s out of DC with the folks that put him in office. He has only a few words and a handshake for the media—he’s not interested in being friends with them. They’re projecting their own disappointment of how “unhappy” the Obamas are with the beltway and saying they feel that way about their positions or serving the American people….total lies. I have never seen a couple so alive and authentic and friendly with us regular people. The fact that people on the Hill and the beltway are mad that the Obamas won’t kiss their ring, makes me love PBO and FLOTUS that much more. I have seen many a snarky article written when she has all these D.C. children in the WH and get to talk with her, eat with her, be mentored by her and have closer access than these MSNBC idiots. She has service members and their children represented at almost all events and parties—they get to be closer to the Obamas than the beltway. They’re eaten up by it I tell you………and this “depression” that PBO is supposed to have, he hates the stupid questions at the press conferences and realizes these faux journalists have nothing to say to stimulate his superior brain cells. I think POTUS really dislikes them, and isn’t afraid to show it of late. He and FLOTUS enjoy what they do, but they are going to protect each other and their family so that they stay sane while he serves.

      • November 19, 2011 at 1:17 pm

Yep you have nailed it I think, Janelle- there is nothing uglier than the jealousy, envy, these pundits have developed for POTUS… funny how we WE, the people Feel a part of this ‘family’/ administration.. because we have been ‘included’.. and the mighty pundits exclude themselves nightly by virtue of their lies/mayhem and BS.

I find it utterly remarkable that the likes of Chris Matthews thinks for a second that he has even an iota of insight or knowledge as to either the President or the First Lady’s ‘happiness’. What absolute Trash. Because surely nothing says ‘unhappiness’ like running for REELECTION, nothing says unhappiness like those flashing brilliant smiles we see plastered everywhere.. nothing says unhappiness like two people- FLOTUS & POTUS travelling our country/world causing others to smile/ laugh/ gleem in their presence.

Seriously: EFF the EFF off Chris Matthews and your mates at MSNBC, you are no more enlightened, intelligent or informing than the knuckleheaded liars at Fox News. Making shit up outta your pea brains.

All anyone needs to do to rebut Matthews’ lies and MSM lies about POTUS inability to connect, unhappiness or FLOTUS unhappiness is to look at all the pictures of them out and about and the enthusiastic response to them. They really have made the WH a people’s house. They will be having a preview showing of the Muppets movie for military families next week; upcoming Country Music night; mentorship program and gardening programs. All the TV shows FLOTUS has been on: she is a fierce advocate for military families and a healthier future for our kids. Chips could put together the videos: the Beyonce dance workout clip (from ABC), the jumping jacks in front of the WH, iCarly etc.

I am in UK with my sis and saw y’day that a telethon raised 26 million pounds in just over 6 hours for children in need. Great to see lotsa of school and college kids were enthusiastically involved in this event. I saw one schoolkids and their headmaster in Wales going for a dip in ocean in freezing conditions. Lovely spirit.

Hi amk. This is an annual event and I usually see lots of internet activity about it around this time of year. I agree. It’s uplifting and everyone seems to join in the community spirit, with musicians and other celebrities volunteering their time and the public sending in donations. It’s quite inspiring. :)

Governor of Maryland Martin O’Malley is frigging fantastic. C-SPAN One is showing his question and answer session at the National Press Club and he is AMAZING!!!!! His defense of PBO is one of the best it has been my pleasure to witness; time and time again. He’s soft spoken but NEVER takes any BS when the media tries to distort PBO’s record or try to con him so that he sounds like a disappointed Democrat and that can be their 30 second sound bite. He makes one proud to be a Democrat. I sincerely hope he is being groomed for 2016.

Those tactics by the corporate media used to work, but now with Twitter, Facebook and other blogs, especially like TOD, and the cororate media incompetence, they are less effective. I hope the Pres cuts them out totally and solely gors to local news outlets.

YES! Couldn’t agree more with this.

Been thinking about this recently. Todd, Chuck and his fellow tools have no special inherent right to ride on Air Force One or be in the WH Press Room. I say cut anyone out who can’t point to the simplest level of Journalism in any of their work, and replace them with rotating local news people from all over the country. President Obama could actually INCREASE his access to “The Press” in general so long as it’s real Journalists, and then Todd, Chuck and Pox Newz propagandists wouldn’t have any ground to claim President Obama isn’t talking to the Press.

It would be especially sweet to kick out Pox Newz network people, and bring in local Fox affilate reporters instead, who more often tend to be actual journalists. President Obama’s answers to issues would appear on Fox air all over the country, just without the Ruturd Murdoch filter altering it to fit the false Fox pre-planned narratives. No reason this couldn’t be done!

    Good Morning TOD family

After reading so many posts today and over the past few weeks – I am wondering if the blog wants to make a unified action to get Chris Matthews attention. You folks have more experience than I do, but his name comes up in negative comments about twice as often as positive. Although we all occasionally get upset with Rachel, Jon Stewart, Lawrence O, etc, the Chris Matthews issues seem to be going on a long time and to be more severe, Many folks seem to rite him off as senile or delusional.

My take on it – there are so few shows that represent the left, we need rock stars in every time slot. Chris Matthews seems to be one of the weaker hosts. What would happen if Martin Bashir or Melissa Harris-Perry were on in his time slot?

It is something to think about. If folks want to push back on Matthews I am happy to post a daily reminder, if not we can just ignore him and hope he fizzles on his own.

Here is contact information I have for his show, I am hopeful that you folks may have more info I can add to the media page.

Great idea about the pushback WiW.

    • November 19, 2011 at 2:23 pm

I don’t think it’s realistic to expect Chris Matthews to be fired from MSNBC. They renewed his contract in March 2009 for four years for about $5 million a year. He’s not going anywhere. Applying pressure to MSNBC needs to be in the context of something that can actually be accomplished, not some fantasy of taking him off the air. He’s too savvy to quit (Olberman) and loves what he does. I think it is more realistic to work to educate those among us to stop watching him.
All the rage expressed here against him for every little thing he does and says hasn’t accomplished one damn thing. He’s worse now than ever. The best way to encourage people to look elsewhere for political commentary is to provide them with something better. Better is out there, but as long as people feel the need to watch him then come here and express outrage, we will never succeed in promoting the quality. We did it with DKos, we can do it with Matthews. Has anyone noticed that people here hardly ever even mention DKos?
This after months of fury on this site, DKos is now a non-factor. We have the power to move Matthews into the dustbin of irrelevancy on this site–relegate him to the same status as Limbaugh who hardly ever gets mentioned here. The question is, Will we?

You are right. I stopped watching MSNB after the election and only watch clips if highlighted elsewhere. We should focus more on working our butts off for relection and a House and Senate with strong democratic majorities. Given negative media slant that means grassroots organizing.

        November 19, 2011 at 3:23 pm

Thank you! I don’t know what it is about MSNBC that makes people think it’s worth watching or worth writing letters to. If you aren’t writing letters to protest the nasty stuff on FOX, then why do it for MSNBC?!! It’s garbage and propaganda just like FOX is, but for some strange reason, too many of us actually think MSNBC has some redeemable qualites or something. They are just as bad as FOX and CNN. Forget all the letter writing and trying to get someone fired, because that won’t change a thing. Turn it off. Better yet, tell your cable provider you no longer want the channel. If you’re somenoe who’s paying extra just to get MSNBC, cancel it.

Nothing will change until we abandon MSNBC. It is able to denigrate this president all day everyday under the guise of liberalism because WE are the ones who give it that power.

        Turn it off!

        • November 19, 2011 at 3:55 pm

So if anything, we could begin a ‘Turn Him Off’ campaign aimed at people here and other blogs and on Twitter who continue to torture themselves and then us with non-stop reportage of every single thing Matthews says. I’m not willing to relegate MSNBC to the dustbin because there is still good or at least acceptable commentary to be had there. Plus realistically, people aren’t going to stop watching MSNBC. But we can offer to help people break their addiction to Chris Matthews. He is the enemy at this point, as far as I’m concerned.

      • November 19, 2011 at 4:04 pm

EXACTLY! If we want to influence media we should concentrate on our local channels, news papers, radio etc. We can have way more influence there. From my experience most people watch their local news channels more than the cable. Local channels rely on local advertising and local viewers for their ratings. Write LTE’s go to the local media web sites and make the facts known.

        • November 19, 2011 at 4:15 pm

        • November 19, 2011 at 4:21 pm

I had to add this. When Chips posted the clips of local newspeople who got to report from the WH, I watched them all. Our guy here was from a Fox affiliated station so I was really interested in how he conducted himself. He did well except when he handed PBO an autographed copy of our dizzy biscuit governor’s idiot book. I wrote him an email, complimenting him on the questions he asked and how unbiased his reporting but I also took him to task for the book business. He actually replied to me, thanking me and telling me what an honor and privilege it was to have an “exclusive” with the Prez. He apologized for the book thing and (not in so many actual words) said it wasn’t his idea and he hoped I would continue to be a viewer of his channel.

This is where the real media action is, folks. I hope PBO will continue to call in local media for one on ones with him and the press core.

          • November 19, 2011 at 5:09 pm

Nice. The coverage from local media has been off the hook. They were going crazy with delight when The President showed up in places like Asheville. Many of these local anchors are giants in their neck of the woods. Most of their viewers would not know Chris Matthews even if he walked down the street with a flashing name tag.

            • November 19, 2011 at 6:23 pm

I’m glad I read all the way down the thread – I’m in! The less attention we pay CM and his type, the more we’ll have to pay to other more worthy persons/topics.

My email to MSNBC about Chris Matthews:

The interview with Chris Matthews this morning was most insulting, not only to the President and his family, but to so many of us who are intelligent, discerning listeners.
Chris Matthews spouted his own narrow insight and preferences. Alex Witt did nothing to call him on his foolishness.
This station can write off the president’s supporters, black and white as stupid or lacking in intelligence, but you are being called out and assessed on a daily basis.
We have watched you re-instate the offensive Mark Halperin. We have waited for coverage of the President’s Asian-Pacific trip to no avail.
We get our faces slapped listening to the likes of Pat Buchanan and Chris Matthews.
We watch the derisive and totally disrespectful way that Chuck Todd questions the president.
We are insulted and outraged by what you pass off as news and fair accounting.

Your coverage is more and more offensive, one-sided, and just as poison and toxic as anything we could ever find on CNN and FOX NEWS.

We can’t beat you. Our cries of disgust will go unheeded. You may succeed in your scarcely veiled attempt to unseat this president, but many of us will never forget your shabby treatment of this administration.
So, we will simply stop watching. With the exception of three shows, you’re simply not worth it.

There’s a reason why I stopped watching Chris Matthews, he’s been bashing the President for I don’t know how long. It was so disgusting that I stopped watching.

Very disrespectful as well…..often calling him :” That guy….he’s weak, not a leader, etc”.

      Yea he’s really a supporter.

I don’t know why she is defending him. What about the face he made when he talked about FLOTUS’ program to fight obesity? Like it’s nothing?…what about all the work she does for the military and their families with Dr. Biden.

I just checked out parts of the written interview, and Ms. Reid can defend all she wants but Matthews clearly told some major lies about PBO. One in particular…..he hasn’t asked us to get involved….there’s no Peace Corps, etc. Clearly he lives in a major bubble because the Peace Corps is running strong; PBO had requested social involvement, thus the number of youth doing community organizing and volunteerism actually increased. That interview, having not watched it, but at looking at what she posted, is so full of lies as to be wholly fictional. She is wrong to defend him as he spewed nothing but vile talking points. The worst offense was in comparing PBO to anybody else. Obviously, she is another TV pundit who craves the media attention more than she supposedly supports the President, who she claims to do so. Liar.

    • November 19, 2011 at 10:13 pm

Incidentally, whatever you think of the Administration’s political stands, the apparent huge shift in levels of obesity in this country in the last three years (an over 10% movement in a *positive* direction, as I understand it) is just staggering. If that change is real and primarily the work of the First Lady, then her obesity work alone would justify not only her time and budget, but an investment equivalent to the entire White House budget, and then some. Remember, that’s a change in just a couple of years in a country of over *300*million*people.*

That work in itself has colossal repercussions, and should be supported, not mocked.

Oldie moldie about Chris Matthews, and what a freakshow he really is (no offense to freaks…):
    http://www.dailyhowler.com/dh013007.shtml

He got the job and keeps the job because he’s willing to be a tool for the Billionaires that own all the MegaMedia. No amount of letter-writing will change this. Why else would Pat Spewcannon still be on the “Liberal” network all these years and amazingly racist and insensitive comments later, resulting in massive letter-writing campaigns?

The owners don’t care that much about ratings. In retail terms, the “news” is a loss-leader for the small handful of Billionaires that own ALL OF IT, since it’s more beneficial to them to keep as many Repub shills in all levels of government so that their taxes are never raised and anti-trust laws are never made and/or enforced.

If they can get some ratings and a little extra money from advertising at the same time, then bonus for them, but it’s not the main motivation, since the amount of money they get to keep with “trickle-downers” running government far surpasses a good revenue year for any “news” operation.

President Obama knows this. He came up with a plan to bypass their roadblocks to the public discourse and won in a landslide. They’re freaking out that the old tricks don’t work on Stanley Ann’s son, and they’re pulling out all the stops to bring him down. Too bad for them, Our Guy is several steps ahead of them, as usual. Fired up!

I understand what Chris is saying and sympathetic to the argument about “Leadership” vs “Technocrat” because I, personally, think it’s a fair criticism. I think it has less to do with Obama’s abilities than the era of instant media. PBO is the first President to be put in the pressure cooker of media where every single move and statement he makes is watched, parsed, and scrutinized. Not even Bush got that until Katrina.

But Chris COMPLETELY LOST ME once he got to the “grateful” BS. That was WAY over the line. Maybe if he sat down and saw what PBO was doing overseas and working hard every fucking day, Chris should be grateful to HIM for putting up with the bullshit media and the treasonous Republicans. That’s when you knew it was less criticism and just more of his white privilege.

    Hi All,

Tweety is upset that the criticism of Pres. Obama in his book did not have the effect he expected, so he is doubliing down. He cannot accept that he was wrong.

I looked at the dedication of Pres Clinton’s library on MSNBC and Tweety who anchored the program did not have one good thing to say about Pres Clinton. It was horrible. I am so surprised to see him suddenly finding all these compliments for Pres Clinton. I think complaints to MSNBC should focus on his criticism of FLOTUS. Also, ask Tweety how Hilary and Laura showed their gratitude- What were their contributions?

Okay, I’ve had it. From now on anyone who continues to watch Chris Matthews is considered by me to be complicit in his shameful behavior. If folks are truly outraged about him dissing the First Lady, crossing the line, then they’d stop watching him. #TurnHimOFF

      Agreed, Tien Le

I have tried to give CM the benefit of the doubt, but this latest explosive crap about Potus and Flotus is too much.

Like somebody said, he is giving the right wing their talking points. As long as he has been in politics, there is no way he does not know what he’s doing.

I am too through with him.

      November 19, 2011 at 4:57 pm

I think people who follow politics closely crave information. Since there’s no rules whatsoever in the States, anything goes. It’s pretty much just lies and propaganda. It’s horrible.

There’s only a few exceptions: Rev. Al, Martin Bashir, Lawrence O’Donnell on a good day……..

When you control information….you control everything.

It took many many years for Republicans to come to that point…it’s not a coincidence that huge corporations owns the networks…with no rules about the content.

A very effective propaganda machine. Even if Chris Matthews would lose some viewers…he’ll gain some eventually.

Since there’s no national boycott of sponsors…..nothing will change…it’s the only way to hurt these corporations.

How come there’s no #Occupymedia #Occupynetworks…why there’s no movement to pressure Congress to change the way corporations have total control of the narrative and messaging…..how about rules and regulations

It is the root of the problem….nothing else is…it’s not banks, it’s not wall street.

If the republicans didn’t have the media to cover for them, carry their water and promote them…and LIE……lets say the outcome of elections would be very different.

It’s the media that help them get elected..

Tien Le, I agree with you up to a point. I don’t watch CM, but once I saw the video and what he said I had to make a comment. As people here are offended by certain comments on the blog—it’s very difficult to hear what CM said on TV and not comment; even if he was talking about a GOP President’s wife and family… Again, I do agree with your point of turning him off.

      November 19, 2011 at 6:18 pm

Tien Le, we can’t simply turn them off and ignore their lies and fabrications. People need to be made aware of the deliberate LIES spread by these “pundits” in the media. We allowed the media to lie to us when George Bush wanted to go to war in Iraq. It was the same Chri Matthews who was waxing poetic about GWB in his flight suit. We allowed the media to lie to us when George Bush wanted re-election in 2004. The media again lied in 2010 when they distorted PBO’s policies and shilled for the Tea Party. All this lying by the media has led to very negative consequences for this country.

There is a lot at stake in the 2012 elections, and because lying has worked for the MSM in the past, they will try to use that same strategy again. We cannot allow the media to get away with lies simply by ignoring them. Because there aren’t enough of us to stop watching to affect their bottom line. People need to be more informed and better informed to be full participants in this democracy.

As usual, brilliantly stated hopefruit. My sentiments exactly.

      • November 19, 2011 at 8:32 pm

HF2 While I agree ‘people need to be more informed and better informed to be full participants’, I hesitate to say that we can be ‘informed’ by one or two reporting back, instead of having CM take up so much space. I haven’t actually counted but I would hazard a guess that there are probably more comments about CM in this thread than there are about the man doing all the work for Congress right now. IMO something is out of whack when we allow so much time and negative energy to a man who we all know is misinformed and delusional. Being aware of his stupidity and spending precious time and energy reiterating it and calling him names are two different things. I don’t see how the latter helps our cause. Not trying to be contrary – just saying how this all strikes me.

      • November 19, 2011 at 10:54 pm

I agree, hopefruit.. it just won’t be me. I stopped watching in 2002..but so appreciative all those who do reconnaissance because how would it be if we all stopped watching and nobody in the reality based community knew what to push back on?

        We need designated watchers!

    Good afternoon, Chips:
HELP!!!! If this is pending please help me out here. I have to go out and will return in the evening.
@Linda: Hi, my name is Linda, also. I use my initials LDS. I have a question: What are LDS people?
If you see my initials please do not mistake me for them or it or whatever.. I truly respect Our President and his family.
Chips, I viewed the first video of Chris Matthews. I cannot stomach the second (if there is one)

I have not watch media and will not…….JUST TURN IT OFF! We have work to do.
    Keep referring people to TOD.
I just have to add that stupid CM is a racist. I grew up down south and I can smell racism. He is the worse kind. He knows exactly what he is doing. He is not sick, bipolar any of the sort. He is a hate-filled racist bastard! Bottom line…….This does not surprise me at all. He throws you a bone and then spews out his hate. He is desparate to sell his book, so he went all out. Ignore him like POB does. He will not go away. He will self destruct……They all do when they unleash their venom. Be encouraged TOD family. Our President did a remarkable job from Hawaii to Bali. Everywhere he went people loved him. Yes, he is smart and handsome. He and Michelle are strong together. Their love will sustain them through this, that and the other. Please understand, this kind of hate can only thrive when you react to it. Do not let it consume you. The powers that be war games are coming to an end and they mad as hell. They cannot play into the the fears of Americans anymore, so they will attack Our President from all angles. He is covered. His family is covered. We have to stand strong and united. The change our President spoke about is here and he needs us to not waiver and doubt. That look of defiance when he boarded AF-1 lets me know that he is ready to take on these nitwits. His confidence level must be high and I believe that revived him to come back even stronger to fight for us in dealing with this do-nothing Congress, delinquent Dems. and lying, low down liberals.

The sad part about that whole segment of CM is that he is asking the President to lead the American people(sarcasttiscally) when he and other racists like him really do not want this Black man to do anything, but be grateful. What a pathetic fool! What does he think he has been doing?

We must not get distracted. POB knows their games and how to play and beat them at their own games. Trust him and “KEEP ON PUSHING”

  81. November 19, 2011 at 4:55 pm

I know I don’t communicate much on Chip’s wonderful TOD site but I am here most of the time to keep up to get the truth and follow our First Family. I’m just going to think out loud for a few seconds to see what it’s worth. I’m not as eloquent as so many of you but here goes.
Matthews can have that million dollar contract to keep him on the air but so did Glenn Beck and see what happened to him? We can turn off our TV but unless we are a Neilson rating family it doesn’t make a difference because we aren’t counted. I have never met a Neilson family, have you? I think they are supposed to keep undercover. We have our work cut out for us. As many of you have already said we have to get the word out every opportunity we have to inform the public. Most people are so busy in their lives just trying to keep up that they don’t have time to think about what is going on. When they finally get a chance to watch TV, they just turn it on and let the info just sink into one ear and out the other. That’s why FOX has been so successful with their propaganda. They reach the people subliminally with their soundbites. I just wish we could come up with a way to have a greater impact. President Obama has given us the directions. He wants us to communicate. We need to follow through. I love Twitter.

    • November 19, 2011 at 5:09 pm

Barb, I hope I don’t creep you out but I understand that if you have cable or satalite, THEY do know exactly what you are watching. No need for the so called “Neilson families” anymore. If i’m wrong about this, someone will correct me.

I always thought ratings were still based off of the Nelson boxes. It’s 2011 and they should be no longer based off those boxes, they really don’t gage anything. Especially with a country that has 308 million people.

      • November 19, 2011 at 8:04 pm

i think you’re right ag911. i received a landline call last night from a survey group that asked a lot of questions about my viewing habits. They were particularly interested in if i was interested in TNN, CNN, FOX, and ESPN. The survey lasted about 30 minutes. i told them that FOX was not allowed in my house. Where upon they asked for my demographics and split……They’re out there. The call came from area code 212 for whatever it’s worth.

    By Greg Sargent
One of the enduring questions about Occupy Wall Street has been this: Can the energy unleashed by the movement be leveraged behind a concrete political agenda and push for change that will constitute a meaningful challenge to the inequality and excessive Wall Street influence highlighted by the protests?

A coalition of labor and progressive groups is about to unveil its answer to that question. Get ready for “Occupy Congress.”

The coalition — which includes unions like SEIU and CWA and groups like the Center for Community Change — is currently working on a plan to bus thousands of protesters from across the country to Washington, where they will congregate around the Capitol from December 5-9, SEIU president Mary Kay Henry tells me in an interview.

“Thousands of people have signed up to come to Capitol Hill during the first week in December,” Henry says, adding that protesters are invited to make their way to Washington on their own, too. “We’re figuring out buses and transportation now.”

Notice this story is from GUAM-

GUAM — As he hopscotched across the Asian Pacific over the past nine days, President Obama cast himself as a leader determined to protect American interests and spread American values, willing to project power and take political risks for the sake of a better future.

It was a message that returned a degree of lift and optimism — and the notion of American exceptionalism — to the president’s political oratory, elements that have been largely absent in recent months as he has focused on the grinding task of creating jobs and curbing unemployment at home.

Obama heads back to Washington early Sunday feeling upbeat about his Asia-Pacific tour, although the good vibes will probably not last long. A bipartisan congressional “supercommittee” appears unlikely to meet a Wednesday deadline to reach agreement on a debt-reduction plan, and the resulting political chaos almost certainly will engulf the president again.

By taking his case abroad, however, Obama temporarily put distance between himself and the political impasse that has nearly paralyzed Washington. The president largely succeeded in putting flesh on his administration’s bare-bones declaration that it was pivoting its attention to a region where U.S. influence had waned.

Good afternoon all. I know how a lot of people feel about cnn here but I just read an article by Roland Martin about how people are taking PBO’s comment about lazziness out of context. Well not out of context just plain old lying. I could not agree more with what Roland was saying. Too many of us expect for stuff to just be handed to us. I remember seeing a story on the world news last year where a company was sending letters home to their worker’s parent’s talking about their achievements. Well they were doing this for the younger ones. I was like WTF are you serious. What the hell is this high school. Then I look at the repug presidential debates and I am like REALLY!? Most of them think they should be voted President because of who they are or the color of their skin or because they rean a business for a hot minute. That is part of the reason I had such an issue with Hillary she thought she should be President because of who she was or used to be. She thought she was entitled to it. If one of these idiots wins they will not last one day. PBO works very hard. It is always easy to say I would do it better when all you are doing is standing on the sidelines complaining and not helping. I also feel that is part of the problem with OWS. Most of them are young and the reason they are mad at PBO is because they thought ok I will do him a favor and get out of bed and go vote and within 2 weeks I will have all the things that I want. They don’t like it that things take time. I hope they learn from what is going on if not the future of America looks very very bleak. I am not saying that I don’t get frustrated but dang I know that I have to work hard and that things that are worth anything will not be handed to you. I will have to say that part of the problem is that the ones who know better still give into the demands of those who think they don’t have to do anything.

Here’s what I left on Joy Reid’s site. re: Chris Matthews nonsense.

    ________________

So Joy and your pal Chris, Do you realize that President Obama is NOT an Irish Catholic, or Bill Clinton? He is uniquely Barack H. Obama. So can we stop the comparison with dead and philandering WHITE presidents?

The comparison is precisely what rubs us all the wrong way. No one judges JFK for NOT being like previous non-Catholic Presidents. No one did Bill Clinton either, so why is this President Obama never treated as sui generis?

Of course Chris demonstrated his unbelievable ignorance of what the President and First Lady actually do everyday with ordinary Americans , and especially military families. Has Chris covered the jobs initiative that the First Lady got 80 companies to pledge commitment to hiring 25,000 veterans for? No. Has he followed Michelle Obama to schools to see her frolicking with schoolkids? No Are these people not Americans?

Did Chris talk about the biggest aircraft order in history that the President just helped secure between Boeing & an Indonesian airline for 230 aircrafts? No. did he mention the much hailed Canberra Declaration just laid out in Australia? No. Sure, the President does not love this country, nor is grateful, nor happy yet he keeps toiling everyday for the interest of this fucking country!!!

I guess you Joy have bought so much into beltway-titis that you miss the forest for the trees. The only people not happy with the First Family are the DC villagers, permagov denizens, and their lackeys who itch so much to socialize in the White House. They feel left out of the corridor of ultimate power.

Well this president was people-powered into office and we like him and his family just fine. Sorry for your and Chris’ discomfort. You will all love Willard Romney who will show ya’ll the proper level of “gratitude” and Irish Catholic greatness, right after dismantling Social Security, Medicare, and hauling us all into war with Iran. T’will be splendid “cheer” in the White House. Good luck!!!
