I have to agree with you Halo that dude is a douche every President in history has taken a family vacation. I have been a democrat all of my life. I’m still in my early twenties so, that is not saying a lot. However when Former President Bush and his family went on vacation that did not bother me. The First Lady and President are spending quality time with their family. Everyone should be entitled to spend time with their family I mean seriously he needs to get a life. The President is from Hawaii, he goes home for Christmas every year. Is it his fault that Secrete Service will not allow him to fly commercial or stay just any where. No it is not. This makes my skin boil while he is running this BS story about how much the President’s family vacation cost does he ever discuss that we as tax payers a required by law to pay for a certain portion of the vacation. Like security and press ( everything that the president non classified must be recorded in some manner for Presidential record.) Everything else he pays for. Need I mind you the Obamas do not have a vacation home not in Hawaii or in Martha’s Vineyard. Now how many properties does Bush, Mittens, and Newt have? Irritated going to make yet another donation.

Its called RACISM. Not a mystery. The MSM encourages it and the low information voters SUCK it in. Byron Tau is just a microcosm of the journalism in America that has deteriorated. I really started to notice this phenomina back in 2003 with the MSM coverage of our illfated invasion of Iraq. It is what it is. We just have to work hard for PBO’s re-election. When PBO says this is going to be a FIGHT he is not kidding. There is a massive power structure that has been around for decades (centuries even) that feel very threatened by PBO. We aren’t playing cards here folks. KEEP HOPE ALIVE!!! Obama/Biden 2012

Justice Department says Seattle police used excessive force
    Saturday, December 17, 2011

In Seattle, the Justice Department said there were deficiencies in oversight, policies and training for police officers on how and when to use force and make use of weapons like batons and flashlights. It found the unnecessary use of force appeared to be confined to a disproportionately small number of officers. It did not find evidence that the police engaged in a “pattern or practice” of discriminatory policing against minorities, but noted “serious concerns” on the issue.

After Seattle’s police department has had time to digest the report, Perez and Durkan said the next step would be sit down with police to craft a framework to make the necessary changes, which would be enforced by a court order and independent monitoring.

Twenty police departments across the United States are under review by the Justice Department, including Miami; Puerto Rico; Newark, New Jersey; New Orleans; and Maricopa county, Arizona. The Justice Department’s investigation into Seattle’s police practices started after complaints from community groups following a rash of highly publicized altercations, chiefly with minorities.

Barack Obama Quote O’ The Day

The final lesson is that in an interconnected world, the defeat of international terrorism, and most importantly, the prevention of these terrorist organizations from obtaining weapons of mass destruction — will require the cooperation of many nations. We must always reserve the right to strike unilaterally at terrorists wherever they may exist. But we should know that our success in doing so is enhanced by engaging our allies so that we receive the crucial diplomatic, military, intelligence, and financial support that can lighten our load and add legitimacy to our actions. This means talking to our friends and, at times, even our enemies.

Judge mulls overturning federal marriage law
    Saturday, December 17, 2011

A U.S. judge appeared sympathetic to a lesbian federal employee’s bid to strike down a law denying health-insurance benefits to her spouse, in the first hearing since the Obama administration decided to quit defending the statute. “The court is faced with enforcing the equal protection clause in the context of a fundamental right – that is marriage,” White said.

Earlier this year, however, Attorney General Eric Holder and President Barack Obama called DOMA unconstitutional and said that while they would continue to enforce it, they would quit defending it in court. In response, the U.S. House of Representatives – which is controlled by Republicans – stepped in to defend the law.

“Congress gets to draw the lines of which benefits it wants to give and has done so,” said attorney Conor Dugan, who defended DOMA. But Golinski’s attorneys and the federal government argued that DOMA violates the U.S. constitution. “Congress gets to draw the lines, but it can’t draw them when they’re discriminatory and arbitrary,” said Assistant Attorney General Tony West.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio: DOJ ‘Sneak Attack’ Is Just Part Of Obama’s Reelection Bid (VIDEO)

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Friday that the Justice Department’s extensive three-and-a-half-year probe of his Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office was all just part of a bid for President Obama to win the Hispanic vote in 2012, even though the investigation began five months before Obama was even elected.

Responding to the Civil Rights Division’s findings that Arpaio “promoted a culture of bias” within the MCSO where detention officers called Latino inmates “wetbacks” and “Mexican bitches,” Arpaio took to Fox News on Friday afternoon to criticize Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez for opening up DOJ’s Thursday press conference with the words “buenos dias.”

Inspector’s Probe Of Fast And Furious Likely Encompasses Bush-Era ‘Gun Walking’
    Ryan J. Reilly December 16, 2011, 1:58 PM

The Justice Department Inspector General’s review of the flawed ATF program in which guns were allowed to “walk” across the Mexican border will include other investigations that used similar methods, according to the IG’s semi-annual report to Congress.

Documents the Justice Department has sent to investigators on Capitol Hill have shown that a separate investigation that used the flawed tactic called Operation Wide Receiver was run out of ATF’s Phoenix division back in 2006 and 2007. A memo to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, dated two days after he took office, said that ATF agents had unsuccessfully attempted a “controlled delivery” of weapons to Mexico that allowed the weapons to go into the country untraced.

Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer has said he regretted not making the connection between the gun walking tactics used during the Bush administration when the allegations about Fast and Furious first came to his attention in early 2011.

I’ve seriously had it with this “Obama caved” nonsense. If the fucking emoprogs hadn’t sat on their asses last year and spread the truth about the Republicans, Orange Boner, McTurtle McConell, and their cronies wouldn’t have the leverage they do now. Even after Reid and the Senate Dems conceded the millionaire surtax McTurtle and his cronies still refused to cooperate, that is what you get when you spend a midterm whining about Obama and the Democrats “not being far left enough” as opposed to attacking the Republicans who want to make President Obama a one term President. The emoprogs need to quit their sniveling and start attacking the actual jerks, the Republicans.

GOP ‘family values’ mayor admits he’s gay
    By David Edwards
    Friday, December 16, 2011

A Republican mayor in Mississippi admitted this week that he was gay after an audit revealed that he spent taxpayer money at a gay adult store in Canada. Greg Davis was elected as the mayor of Southaven in 1997 on a platform of conservative “family values,” but he says he recently realized that he was gay. “At this point in my life and in my career, while I have tried to maintain separation between my personal and public life, it is obvious that this can no longer remain the case,” the mayor, now in his third term, told The Commercial Appeal.

Folks this is the Ugly truth at the heart of the Keystone pipeline debacle.

The Koch brothers are bankrolling the push for approval. They alone stand to benefit immensely from the new pipeline. Why? The tar sands oil is ALREADY being pumped into the US through an existing pipeline network. The XL part is the issue at hand and it is not simply about environmental concerns. It is about huge windfall profits to Koch. Here’s the Reuters article explaining the matter.

    _____________

“The Koch brothers are architects of the dirty energy strategy, both in Washington and through their commercial interests,” Jeremy Symons of the Reston, Va.-based National Wildlife Federation said. “It wouldn’t make any sense at all for the president to give this pipeline project the thumbs up and undermine his own clean energy efforts.”

Dearborn’s ‘All-American Muslim’ stars say uproar did them a favor

By pulling its ads from TLC’s “All-American Muslim,’’ a Dearborn-based reality TV show, the home improvement chain Lowe’s may have done the show a great favor, the stars of the show say. I’m kind of glad it happened,” said Nader Aoude, 32, a member of one of the featured families, along with his wife, Nawal, 25, who gave birth to the couple’s first child on the show four months ago.

“It’s created a lot of dialogue and that’s a positive,” Nader Aoude said Thursday. “A lot more people are becoming more informed. It has unified Americans to come together to recognize an injustice toward a certain group. . .that’s a beautiful thing.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, ground was broken for a new accelerator research facility being built at the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, Illinois.

Supported jointly by the state of Illinois and DOE, the construction of the Illinois Accelerator Research Center (IARC) will provide a state-of-the-art facility for research, development and industrialization of particle accelerator technology, and create about 200 high-tech jobs. DOE’s Office of Science Director William Brinkman participated in the groundbreaking ceremony.

“The Illinois Accelerator Research Center will help fuel innovation by developing advanced technologies, strengthening ties with industry and training the scientists of tomorrow,” said Dr. Brinkman. “The Department of Energy welcomes the opportunity to partner with the State of Illinois and looks forward to seeing IARC come to fruition.”

9 states win Race to the Top money for pre-K

Nine states will share $500 million in grant money designed to improve and expand pre-Kindergarten education, the White House announced today. The winners of the latest competition for “Race to the Top” funding are California, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington, Bloomberg Businessweek reported.

Thirty-five states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico competed for about $50 million to $100 million each to help build statewide systems that improve child care, Head Start centers and preschools, The Associated Press reported. Last year, Race to the Top awarded $4 billion in similar grants to states for initiatives in K-12 education….

A council representing the majority of New Mexico’s Native American tribes on Thursday endorsed President Barack Obama’s re-election bid, saying the president has kept his promises to tribal communities.

The endorsement by the All Indian Pueblo Council was presented to Obama campaign manager Jim Messina at a special ceremony on the Sandia Pueblo. It came a few weeks after the White House hosted its third summit with tribal leaders, where Obama told them: “You have a president that’s got your back.”

While the endorsement of a Democrat is not surprising, the vote of support came nearly a year before the 2012 presidential elections. Campaign officials attributed the early vote of confidence to its early and aggressive grass-roots outreach to different ethnic groups.

Awesome news. The Obama administration really has done a lot on behalf of Native American tribal communities. Making sure they received stimulus funds, HUD funds, making sure they are part of education reform and funds. He really does keep his promises.

    Must read from Smartypants:

In other words, you can’t score points until you get in the game. All the yelling from the sidelines won’t cut it. But when you get in the game, not every play is going to work and sometimes the most important contributions go unnoticed. So we have to be prepared to do the grunt work and risk failure.

Another good read, and a “lightbulb moment”

http://www.hopeandchange.net/2011/12/light-bulbs.html I’d say that this will give us ALL a “lightbulb moment” of our own!

Burying Your Victories: What if Obama Taxed the Rich but Never Told Anyone?

Did you know Obama’s health care bill contained a $20 billion a year tax on the richest Americans? I didn’t until I stumbled onto a mention of this the other day, although writing about politics is my life and I knew enough to be angry at the gutting of a national public option. I asked a dozen other friends, half of whom work in health care or health care policy and most of whom are fellow political junkies. None of them knew either. If those who follow these issues intensely don’t know about something that all of us would cheer as a step toward getting the wealthiest to pay their fair share, most American voters sure aren’t going to know either.

    SHHHHHHHHH don’t tell anyone……..

Awesome news. This is why I don’t go around doing what the PL, Emoprogs and unfortunately some of the supposedly reasonable people on this blog have been doing by screaming “PBO caved! PBO caved!” There is always a method to his madness (paraphrasing the famous adage) and in the end it is ALWAYS for the good of the American people. PBO is always 20 steps ahead of the GOP and the public. His mind is like a steel trap. He is a master at political chess and always manages to twist his opponents; rightwing and leftwing alike into pretzels by backing them into a no win corner.

    • December 17, 2011 at 4:40 pm

If they’re not cheering the mere fact of a health care bill that was 100 years in the making, then hearing about a hidden tax increase on the rich probably wouldn’t satisfy them, either.

You are absolutely right, theo! Even the author of this article couldn’t resist putting in a few digs against the President about this “cave” nonsense, and how OWS should be credited for the Osawatomi speech. These PLs and emoprogs are hopeless.

I think President Obama just put the republicans in a box once again. By having the republicans sign on to a two month payroll tax cut extension, how in the world can they come back two months later and say no to making the tax cut permanent. Come March of 2012 they will be knee deep in campaigning, I really don’t think they want as one of their slogans “ Vote republican! We don’t believe in no stinking tax cut unless you’re a pretend job creator.”

I love watching the debates, I love how they say the most outrageous things about President Obama. I love it because sooner or later one of those clowns will have to stand on stage and repeat ever stupid thing they’ve said about President Obama to his face, which they won’t by the way. I really don’t think the republicans want another face to face meeting with President Obama, judging from the last time they met, President Obama handed them their asses on a silver platter.

      THIS! THIS! THIS! THIS!!

I am cooking like a crazy woman today, but checking in every few minutes. LOVE this TOD family. Thanks to each of you for what you bring to my life. Let’s all remember to pray for Fred and his mother …… and anyone else here that is struggling or suffering.

  39. December 17, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Thanks for reminding us, tnmtngirl. I was thinking of Fred while trying to calm my physical cry outs this morning, and I had to rush downstairs to get something to help, and got sidetracked. So here is what I needed.

Fred just hit my thoughts this morning, so I know that we need to continue to send out great energy to Fred and family.

Fred, if you peek in today, please know that you are on our hearts and your mother as well. I really do hope and pray that you will be comforted in your spirit and get some rest for your physical body. Keep good thoughts as much as your life will allow. This can’t be an easy situation for you now, but we love you and please know that I will focus on your situation. I am spending Christmas alone(my choice), so I will have much time to lift on my TOD family. Love to you Fred.(((((((((((Hugs coming your way)))))))))))))HZ

Coincidentally, I also had Fred and her mother on my mind earlier this morning and whispered a prayer for both, as well as for her brother.

also remembered a couple other TODvillians (ex. Obama Grandmother) who I know are having a rough time physically. Sure hope that we all will enjoy good and/or improved health as we enter 2012 when so much is at stake.

After 20 Years Of Poisoned Babies, EPA Will Finally Cut Coal Industry’s Toxic Mercury Pollution
By Brad Johnson on Dec 16, 2011 at 11:58 am

The Environmental Protection Agency is expected to approve a tough new rule on Friday to limit emissions of mercury, arsenic and other toxins from the country’s power plants, according to people with knowledge of the new standard. Though mercury is a known neurotoxin profoundly harmful to children and pregnant women, the air toxins rule has been more than 20 years in the making, repeatedly stymied because of objections from coal-burning utilities about the cost of installing pollution control equipment.

Myth That Keystone XL Creates Jobs Perpetuated By Oil Lobby, Parroted By Congress’s Oil Recipients
By Rebecca Leber on Dec 16, 2011 at 5:24 pm

Project advocates, who include Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, misrepresent its economic benefits to favor the oil industry, throwing out claims that Keystone XL creates “tens of thousands of jobs.” An oil contractor hired by the State Department reported it would create between 5,000 and 6,000 temporary jobs, while an independent study by Cornell University found it would create only 500 to 1,400 temporary jobs. Once the costs of the increased pollution and risk of oil spills is factored in, Cornell found, the jobs impact is likely to be negative. The “118,000 spin-off jobs” number used by TransCanada received two Pinocchios from the Washington Post Fact Checker:

    ~snip~

How did a grossly exaggerated number become the prevailing argument to build the pipeline? The reason is the oil lobby is in overdrive. At least 42 companies have lobbied on Keystone XL since 2009, and 33 actively campaigned in the most recent quarter.

Congress’s best salesmen for the pipeline are conveniently the top beneficiaries of Big Oil donations. McConnell, who said he will oppose any payroll bill that doesn’t include the pipeline, is Senate’s biggest recipient of oil and gas money, receiving $199,000 this year. Boehner is one of the top 10 recipients in the House this year, and has taken in $434,050 from the industry over his career.
