Yep, the White House covered up the visit of Johnny Depp (and Tim Burton)

What does he do with all those jersey?
i have wondered the same thing…
I think they go into the Presidential Library later.
The Hour Of The Jackals Is Upon Us
As we wait for the press briefing this afternoon, my thoughts go out to our amazing Press Secretary Jay “Clark Kent” Carney. He is brilliant and he has the patience of Job dealing with the jackals. I am preparing myself for the onslaught of deep and probing questions from these so called journalists about the catnip du jour which is the Jodi Kantor book. With all that is going on here and around the world, the very idea that any one finds this book news says volumes about the current state of the media in this country. I wonder if AP will ask about the book first or if it will be left to Norah O’Donnell to do the honors. We shall see.
I think jay carney will flick them off and move on.
AMEN TO THAT…JAY IS A GREAT FLICKER!…:) I TRIED TO WATCH PBO ON WHITEHOUSE.GOV…NEVER GET THE SOUND! DARN!!!! HE LOOKS GOOD AND HE’S GOING TO NEED A BIG ROOM FOR ALL THOSE JERSEYS!…A B-BALL ROOM. HE SHOULD TRY PUTTING ‘BO’ IN ONE OF THOSE. MY DOG LOVE SHIRTS!
In seeing photos of our PBO you usually see him appearing quite tall until he is seen with professional basketball players.:) lol
Some woman broached the subject – was it Norah? I don’t know them per se and have no great desire to be able to differentiate them one from the other. All the vocal ones repeatedly showcase their really pathetic questioning ability. None stand out to me. Ugh!
Good! They’re done for today. Another chance for them to go research and prepare good questions.
Actually, Norah O’Donnell wasn’t there today. But I can just imagine her sitting in the front row with her legs crossed snarling a question about that book to Jay. But all was not lost because of her absence, I think the person asking the first question about the book was Brianna Keilar of CNN.
I hope they don’t wait too long to invite my HOT MEN RUNNING – LA GALAXY to the WH – MLS CUP BITCHES!!!!
But they need to wait until Landon gets back from his loan to Everton.

The Supreme Court will hear arguments over the Texas GOP’s redistricting map
By: seeta| January 09, 2012 at 11:00 am
From Bloomberg.com: As the election year dawns, the U.S. Supreme Court (1000L) is right in the thick of it. The justices return today from their holiday break to hear arguments on an expedited basis over minority voting rights in Texas’s congressional and state legislative districts. Together with disputes over immigration and health care, the redistricting case is part of a Supreme Court term with repercussions for November’s presidential and congressional elections.

What goes around ….
America – Remember, @MittRomney operatives boasted that context doesn’t matter http://t.co/0cUtXSIX http://t.co/zwkmUWnd Caught
$10 says Romney will give a Bain Capital address where he will defend what he did and defend capitalism and the MSM and GOP will swoon over it and compare it to Pres. Obama’s race speech in the height of the Rev. Wright stuff.
The press and the GOP will swoon. The 99%? Not so much.
Yup. The pathetic press hasn’t been able to sway the rethug voters on any of the candidates. Whoever flamed out, did it their own and on fucking live teevee..
And it will go over like lead balloon.
It will be a complete failure.
Conservatives Prefer Reagan Fantasies to Reality (And So Did Reagan)
January 09, 2012 at 9:00 am by: seeta
From Center for American Progress: President Reagan . . . actually increased taxes “in seven of his eight years in office, including one stretch of four tax increases in just two years.” Nobel laureate economist Paul Krugman [noted] that “no peacetime president has raised taxes so much on so many people.” The Washington Monthly’s Steve Benen pitched in with his observation that the Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982, which was Reagan’s biggest tax hike, is today “generally considered the largest tax increase—as a percentage of the economy—in modern American history.”
Moreover, says Benen, “between 1982 and 1984, Reagan raised taxes four times, and as Bruce Bartlett has explained more than once, Reagan raised taxes 12 times during his eight years in office.” Benen believes that President Reagan’s legacy makes contemporary conservatives “look ridiculous.”

“Conservatives Prefer Reagan Fantasies to Reality….” The same is true of the holier than thou progressives, who prefer the exaggerated myths about FDR, JFK and LBJ over reality. Of course this is nothing new. Most human history is based on exaggerated fantasies of people in power.
Why hasn’t he closed GITMO???
BECAUSE ONLY SIX DEMS HAVE EVER VOTED TO FUND IT!!!! And now the NDAA is a GIANT PILE OF SHIT TRYING TO STOP HIM FROM CLOSING IT EVER.
How does Carny maintain his composure in the face of all this FUCKING STUPIDITY!!!
Sorry – but this pisses me off.
Princess Potty Mouth
Because, the far left media likes stirring shit up. The Jackals only ask provocative questions from both sides of the extreme.
It is a sick way to represent the people as the fourth estate. Instead, more likely, it’s gotcha politics. That is not journalism, but it is biased!
I have a lot of respect for PS Jay C for the way he calmly repeats the same info day after day. The press corps has got to be the most shameless bunch of uninformed reporters on constant display. I get the sense they sit down, blurt out their asinine questions, then close their **notes** until the next presser. It seems clear to me THEY DO NO RESEARCH in between one presser and the next! They can`t even cross off questions that have already been answered so that they are not repeated! It burns that these tools are paid well for doing nothing instructive to the nation while under the WH Press Corp banner!
The trouble with the Media and the PL is that they both do not understand that President Obama is not a dictator. Sometimes I wonder if these morons really understand the limits of presidential power under our system of separation of powers. Unlike areas where the President can exercise his executive power, the President cannot unilaterally defy laws passed by Congress. I am absolutely convinced that if President Obama could have found a way to close GITMO, without defying the laws passed by Congress, he would have done that three years ago. It’s true that the President could have vetoed bills tying his hands about GITMO. But to do so meant that he had to put closing GITMO above the needs of defense, and especially the needs of the men and women in our military. Besides, President Obama is not a fool! Given the fact that Congress voted overwhelmingly against his plan to close GITMO a veto would have been meaningless because it would have been overwhelmingly overridden!
Mitt will win tomorrow. The question is, by how much? NH has a history of throwing monkey wrenches into front running campaigns (e.g., Obama in 2008). But whereas Obama recovered from his loss in NH and became an even stronger candidate, if Mittens doesn’t put it away by 15 points his glass jaw will shatter. I could easily see him not breaking 35%, which for a MA governor would be catastrophic. He may have to do what he enjoys and fire someone.
It will be interesting to see what kind of election/voting shenanigans the various nefarious branches of the GOP cabal try tomorrow.
The most recent public opinion survey, conducted through Sunday evening by University of New Hampshire and WMUR, shows that only 44 percent voters have made up their minds. Romney has a commanding lead with 41 percent, following by Ron Paul at 17 percent, and Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum tied at 11 percent.
Note that: only 44% of voters have made up their minds. This is definitely wide open. His “commanding lead” is built on quicksand.
Article here: http://news.yahoo.com/mitt-nightmare-scenario-145900354.html
I’m still hoping it’s Vermin Supreme fir the upset! Then NH can hold it’s head and it’s chin up high again!
Well, Vermin Supreme is running as a Dem, so we can’t hope for an upset there. But really, with that name he should be running as a Republican.
Depends on Huntsman. I figure Romney/Huntsman will split 50-55% in NH, Paul will get his 20%, leaving 25-30% to be split between Newt, Santorum and Perry. If Romney is getting 35% than Huntsman is looking at between 15-20% which could be enough for third place. If Romney is up in the low to mid-forties, than Huntsman could be looking at single digits.
I think this Bain attack might help Romney in NH as it’s his home state for all intents and purposes and they’ll circle the wagons a bit.
I’m not sure about the Bain attack helping Romney. If the polling is accurate, the fact that 56% of GOP voters still haven’t fully committed to one candidate is pretty telling about the lack of enthusiasm that Romney engenders. Now, I’m not going to hold my breath that he will get only 35%, but it’s definitely within the realm of possibility.
All I hope is that tomorrow night isn’t quite as long as last Tuesday. I finally gave up and went to bed.
Gregory just called this President a Technocrat, almost like Romney!
Weak description Gregory!
If he is a technocrat, why does wall street hate him?
Weak! Is that all David Gregory has?
Me thinks, David Gregory and Bain are co owners of the Weather channel! He is so damn biased!
Todd Palin endorses Newt? I actually think that could be important. To Sarah Palin supporters it will be seen as Sarah herself endorsing Newt, but it won’t be as big news on all the networks so Newt wouldn’t get the negative that would come along with a Sarah endorsement.
Can any Tom, Dick and Harry “endorse” now? I thought it had to be somebody that mattered politically. I thought us layfolk just “supported” politicians.
Interesting, I think Newt did float Sarah Palin as a possible VP pick.
And Sarah is a Ron Paul fan, I wonder how that will work out.
Newt breaks news of Todd Palin endorsement to NH. Voter: "I don't know why it would matter to anybody." slate.me/ABI2wN— (@daveweigel) January 09, 2012
Okay…pack it in boys and girls. The nomination contest is OVA..
Todd “The First Dude” Palin just endorsed Gingrich.
NOW THERE’S A CURSE THAT LANDED ON THE RIGHT STREET CORNER! LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!
So did the head of the tea party just now on msnbc. Newtie really knows how to attract the best of us.
LOL thank you.
Finally, I can blow out the candles I lit in a private vigil I was holding until I heard from Todd Palin, the most important political analyst to emerge in the last 50 years.
Next I will need to clear my schedule and start the whole process again as I await the universe-shattering endorsement from America’s Sweetheart, Herman Cain.
:X Dead:X LOL….That was ridiculously funny.
LOL. Can my Aunt Nita “endorse” President Obama?
Wouldn’t that be something!!!! Newt Gingrich for Pres with Sarah Palin for VP. No way! ha ha ha
Newt did not suggest her for VP (he is too smart for a rerun). He suggested her for head of the energy departmentor some other dept.
Remember when she had a so called job appointed by then Gov Murkowsky (the Dad of Lisa) with the energy department in AK? She ended up quitting using the example of her deciding to downsize a department there that was unnecessary. She gained hero status for doing it but there was a political opponent that said she actually hated the job and didn’t understand it so just wanted to quit. Can you see her in a federal job that she quits too? It is a habit for her and fits with an ADHD.
That second question from the reporter just blew the stupidity meter. Jay’s response was great.
Hi! Am here, sort of. Isn’t there a song to help Monday get in line like that Friday’s Good?
I really hope that either the Bulls or Da Bears win a championship while President Obama is in office. He would be super excited they have until 2016 to get it done. Hopefully it will not take them that long.
Elizabeth Warren Stands Outside Fenway, in the Cold, Shaking Hands
—By Tim Murphy| Mon Jan. 9, 2012 7:13 AM PST
A little more than two years ago to the day, while locked in a tight race with Republican Scott Brown for the vacant Massachusetts Senate seat, Martha Coakley, the state attorney general, offered up the quote that no number of foreclosure fraud lawsuits will be able to wipe from her obituary. Asked about her hands-off campaign style, she pushed back: “As opposed to standing outside Fenway Park? In the cold? Shaking hands?” On Saturday, Elizabeth Warren, the Democrat who’s challenging Brown in November, tweeted this photo:

I’m saying it now – she’s our first Femme POTUS.
I hope so! And we’ll have her back against the PUMAs, because you know they’ll hate her. Just like back in 08, when there was speculation that Kathleen Sebelius was on the list as a possible VP, the PUMAs went after her fiercely. They claim they’re feminists, but they aren’t. They’re just Hillary obsessed cultists.
Romney is having a press conference today, because of this gaffe.
Spot on chips!
Is it because of the “I like firing people” remark or the larger Bain attacks on him?
Ann Compton who asked about the bedroom slippers comment is now asking about why it was not publicized that Johnny Depp attended a party at the White House.
Now Ed Henry is getting into the act about Johnny Depp. Unbelievable……….
Ann Compton has been around for along time and you would think she had more sense than to ask question about a Halloween party, in which that Kantor woman tried to imply that it was some big secret. What has happen to our journalists.
RUMOR FROM REICH ON MSNBC…ROMNEY WILL GO FOR RUBIO FOR VP…MAKES SENSE IF HE’S TRYING TO PULL IN EVANGELICALS. THIS IS GOING TO BE MIGHTY INTERESTING…HOWEVER…………………………………..THEY WON’T HOLD A CANDLE TO PBO!
DWS called that an extreme ticket! She will annihilate them!
That only to split the Latino vote
What does he add to the ticket really? Sure he locks down Florida for GOP in all liklihood, but he doesn’t have any national security credentials, and neither does Romney. Remember the big deal in 2008 was national security/FP credentials on the Obama ticket and a very large part of the reason why VP Biden was chosen. The Rubio “Big Lie” will be the first thing that is talked about once he is selected, and he would have been in the Senate for 18 months tops. I think Rubio is all smoke and mirrors and really a lightweight when you hear him speak.
The hell he doesn’t. As a native Floridian, Rubio is alot more right wing than people know. First, he’s Cuban and that does not make the Latino population a lock- I’m sure others can do a better job of explaining why. He inexplicably held up I think a Puerto Rican judge’s nomination for non related reason and he was excoriated in the Miami Press for this. This pick will do the same for the Latino community as the Palin pick did for women- nothing. All the Obama team have to do is keep showing clips of Romney endorsing and campaigning for that asshat governor of ours (Rick Scott) and his numbers will drop where Scott’s is….somewhere north of 25% and south of 35%.
I had a Latina on twitter tell me Rubio is hated. He reminds me of a inexperienced, pouty, spoiled brat. Guess this is why he sent the President that nasty letter last week. A debate between this liar and Joe Biden with all of his experience will be hilarious.
Rubio does not have good numbers in the latino community
Rubio is to the Latino Community what Herman Cain is to the Black community.
Pretty Much hopefruit. The GOP is grasping for straws.
Stop listening to Robert Reich on any topic.
Thank you! reich is one of those people who I turn away from/mute.
Now, the press is talking about pictures of jinny depp and covering these photos up!
I had to tweet to the @whpresscorp. I asked if they had become the National Inquirer and said I couldn’t believe they were actually discussing Johnny Depp.
But here’s the thing, IMO. Why ascribe some nefarious motive for not having Depp and Burton’s names all over the promo. Just maybe they wanted the event to get the intention rather than the Hollywood stars.
These fools have nothing else to talk about. The gop primary is boring, PBO & Co are working their MOJO, everything is going PBO’s way…so they are making sh*t up…where is it written that every person who is invited to the WH has to be announced.? The first BLACK PRESIDENT has to get permission and approval from msm, to have guest at the WH. These fools are full of…
ABC mocking the 1%.
Wall Street banks will announce their annual compensation and bonuses starting this month, and forecasts are generally expecting cutbacks across the board though the rewards will still be rich at least by non-1 percenter standards.
Awww, Malia was the Morton salt girl!! And look at little Sasha! Sooo adorable.
I know, they had a secret party in the basement for MILITARY kids, the media is really crazy with their fake drama. The WH is making sure, the “author’s” book doesn’t sell, and I love it.
Where did you find this, Chips?! Must be somewhere the rabid press corps doesn’t know about…like THE INTERWEBS!
How crazy is Johnny Depp!? What a character.
If I was a journalists I would be ashame to be sitting up there asking the questions Crompton and Mr. Ed were asking. With all the things going on in this world. They know that party was not a secret, it’s just there way of trying stick it to the Obamas . Most of the press will support that piece of junk by Kantor, not because they believe everything in the book, but because they want to stick it to the Obamas.
Tim Burton, YES, but that does not look like Johnny Depp to me. Wonder if they subbed someone else for the photo?
These **snark** reporters, do not let answers stand in their way as they dig for god-knows-what!
I am embarrassed for them as they regularly display they do not make a distinction between political news and gossip or personal opinions.
Nikki Haley Opponents Begin Process For Potential Recall
Several bills have been filed in the General Assembly to amend the SC Constitution to allow for the recall of elected officials as a new Recall ‘Trikki Nikki’ website seeks to generate public support for the move.
ooooh, how I hope this succeeds!! Trikki Nikki. Aside from the horrible job she has done as governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, born Nimrata Nikki Randhawa has embraced the tea party wing of the Republican party and decided that she is white. Nothing like denying the very essence of who you are to make a girl care about her fellow humans! NOT!!!
Both of her parents are Sikh, identify as south Asian and were born in Punjab, India. Her sister, from the same marriage, identifies as south Asian. Nikki, on the other hand, has decided to be white. Wheeeewwwww, that’s some denial there…
Rock Center (Brian Williams) will do a story tonight at 10:00 ET on NBC about the Romney clan who is living in Mexico—-40 of them, I think. His ancestors fled the country to Mexico 125 years ago to escape persecution re. religion—–wanting to practice polygamy.
Clearly, Romney lacks critical thinking skills and the ability to be honest about anything! “Look, my efforts are a stunningly dismal and cynical bid to occupy the highest office in the land.” There! Fixed it for him. ~
Mitt Romney Is Confused About Iran Sanctions
—By Asawin Suebsaeng
| Sat Jan. 7, 2012 7:55 PM PSTDuring Saturday’s Republican debate at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire, GOP front-runner Mitt Romney took his standard swipe at the Obama administration’s foreign policy. Romney went after the president for, among other things, pursuing a murky strategy in Libya (really?) and for making “one error after another” on key foreign policy issues, particularly the Iranian regime’s nuclear capabilities.
“We have a nation, which is intent on becoming nuclear,” Romney said. “Iran has pursued their ambition without having crippling sanctions against them… And he’s failed to put together a plan to show Iran that we have the capacity to remove them militarily from their plans to have nuclear weaponry. Look, this is a failed presidency.”

Ooops….computer is clowning again. Sorry about that!
Thankfully for Jay, he has a hard break today. He has to be out of there by 1:45 p.m.
Good Morning TOD Family
What a great way to start the day.
Diane, about 3 threads back I thanked you for your brilliant idea.
I was hoping we could build on it.
I just downloaded the OFA interactive calendar to my local computer (everyone should do this, it is wonderful, let us know if you have techie problems.)
Well Jan 17th is listed as Michelle’s B-Day – we could revisit this $24 donation idea on her B-Day.
Also – smartypants is putting the idea in her blog, who else can we encourage to highlight this idea. Rachel, Woopi, maybe even Oprah (as penance for interviewing Christie)
This is such a great idea. Diane, we really want to hear from you more often. Virtual Pat on the back ((((((

Wow, I just caught the tail end of an interview by Andrea Mitchell of Jen Psaki (Deputy Communications Dir White House) on the Jodi Kantor book. The little bit I saw of Psaki was terrific. I hope the full interview will be available at some point.
ObamaCare Is Winning the Fight on Fraud and Abuse
Finally we have a scandal that will unravel this administration. What did Johnny Depp know and when did he know it?
FiredUpInCA, I saw a headline earlier today phrased exactly like that, “What did Johnny Depp know and when did he know it?” I just shook my head and kept it moving. They really are scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to come up with something that will generate more clicks…NEXT!~
I liked the way WH spokesperson, Jen Psaki, described the reported kerfuffles in the book. She said in the grand scheme of things—–”No Big Deal”. Same kind of stuff that happens in every WH, a conflict here and there. She was dismissive. No Big Deal.
I loved it when she said I’m sure you’ve had disagreements here at MSNBC.
Which is the exact tone to take. The more attention the book is given, the more the “press” thinks there’s something there.
I agree LL, it’s been thoroughly debunked. That and the accusations about the “secret” 2009 Halloween Party. The more attention that we pay to it, the more attention it will receive and it’ll become an unnecessary distraction that dilutes our energies from what we should be focusing on–namely President Obama’s re-election. People will think and believe what they want to regardless of the facts–which have been presented. Let them! We have bigger fish to fry! KEEP PRESSING ON!…
Romney’s education agenda based on standardized tests, school choice
By Marcos Restrepo| Thursday, January 05, 2012 at 1:08 pm
Education Week writes: Romney has a long record and a lot of ideas on education redesign. He’s a fan of standardized testing, and has credited the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 with providing a much-needed boost to accountability. In fact, he was one of the NCLB law’s biggest champions when he ran for president back in 2008. But this year, he has also emphasized the need to step up the state role when it comes to K-12.
Education Week adds that Romney has “called for getting rid of teacher salary schedules, but said he’d like to pay beginning teachers more. He also waded into the culture wars, saying he thinks students should be taught about the advantages of marriage.” Education News reported last September that Romney also supports charters schools, school vouchers and “currently supports the federal government’s involvement in education and would keep in place the No Child Left Behind act created under President Bush in 2001.”

I always enjoy seeing pictures of PBO with the championship teams of whatever sport….he just looks so COMFORTABLE with them. In great contrast to GWB who always looked awkward and totally ill at ease with the teams. Maybe he knew that being a cheerleader did not lend him any athletic cred. PBO, though, as we all know, truly understands and enjoys sports…..Also, the team players always look at ease with him, not stiff and awkward. LOVE our Prez.
Yep, he’s in his element around the sports champs. Of course, he’s in his element in most environments. The man is awesome !
Bill Daley to step down—-gave his letter of resignation to PBO last week.
COS Daley to step down
Just give the gig to Pete Rouse.
He doesn’t want it, but I agree heading into the election campaign that he should take one for the team and take it on.
Chief of Staff Daley is leaving at the end of the month, will be replaced by budget director Jack Lew – http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-pn-william-daley-to-step-down-as-obamas-chief-of-staff-20120109,0,1505407.story
Daley was never a good fit, he was supposed to come in with business connections and work in that outreach. However this brings unnecessary drama to the Administration when they should be gearing up for re-election campaign. I don’t know what Jack Lew brings to the table in this roll, other than he’s probably seen as the best for the role of all the current insiders as I doubt the President wanted to bring in an outsider as campaign season kicks off.
What drama did Daley bring? I haven’t heard his name in months.
The drama will come because the jackals will jump all over on reading between the lines why Daley left – how he was brought in because of his business connections and is leaving because re-election campaign is gearing up and he doesn’t like the partisan stuff. So this all will mean that Pres. Obama is giving up being pro-Business and going into complete campaign mode 10 months out.
I guess this helps at taking that silly book off the front pages…
SR you can be a little dramatic. CHILL. The Obama machine will keep rollin. You give PBO’s enemies a little too much credit.
DNC launches campaign against GOP-led voter-restriction laws
By Ashley Lopez| Monday, December 05, 2011 at 12:25 pm
The Democratic National Committee launched an online campaign last week to educate voters about what the group calls efforts that aim “to restrict voting purely for partisan gain.” Late last week, national Democrats announced they would be launching a campaign responding to laws across the country that may decrease access to the polls for many for the 2012 election.
The website, protectingthevote.com, states that “in 2011, a new movement to change the way we vote is under way. Unlike past reforms that sought to expand access to voting, this effort aims to restrict voting purely for partisan gain.” The website runs through some of the most restrictive new laws in states across the country. The DNC points to laws that “target voter registration drives, cut early voting, repeal election day registration, and create citizen challenges” as the biggest culprits of voter suppression. The website also has a link to a 73-page report written by the Voting Rights Institute, with help from the DNC.

‘I like being able to fire people’
By Steve Benen
Mitt Romney’s detractors in both parties are eager to point out one of the more glaring problems with the former governor’s background: he’s put thousands of Americans out of work.
And with that push in mind, Romney’s critics could hardly believe their good fortune this morning when he spoke to the Nashua Chamber of Commerce in New Hampshire. Here’s the clip from the DNC:
It’s a line I guarantee voters will be hearing again: “I like being able to fire people.”
Indeed, just last month, a top Romney campaign official said all campaign messages “propaganda” and “agitprop,” so there’s no point in worrying about niceties such as context.
It leaves Romney in an awkward position: he thinks it’s acceptable to take others’ words out of context, but doesn’t want to be treated the same way.
Okay, a really important policy question here: who is that gorgeous man on the left in the pic with Mark Cuban?
Heads up everyone:
Why Obama hasn’t closed Guantánamo camps
By CAROL ROSENBERG| For ForeignAffairs.com Posted on Saturday, 01.07.12
The responsibility lies not so much with the White House but with Congress, which has thwarted President Barack Obama’s plans to close the detention center, which the Bush administration opened on Jan. 11, 2002, with 20 captives. Congress has used its spending oversight authority both to forbid the White House from financing trials of Guantánamo captives on U.S. soil and to block the acquisition of a state prison in Illinois to hold captives currently held in Cuba who would not be put on trial — a sort of Guantánamo North.
The latest defense bill adopted by Congress moved to mandate military detention for most future al Qaida cases. The White House withdrew a veto threat on the eve of passage, and then Obama signed it into law with a “signing statement” that suggested he could lawfully ignore it. But Congress has made it nearly impossible to transfer captives anywhere. Legislation passed since Obama took office has created a series of roadblocks that mean that only a federal court order or a national security waiver issued by Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta could trump Congress and permit the release of a detainee to another country.
Neither is likely: U.S. District Court judges are not ruling in favor of captives in the dozens of unlawful detention suits winding their way from Cuba to the federal court in Washington. And on the occasions when those judges have ruled for detainees, the U.S. Court of Appeals has consistently overruled them in an ever-widening definition of who can be held as an affiliate of al Qaida or the Taliban.

Fear of pink slips
By Steve Benen
Mitt Romney tends to run into trouble when he tries to relate to Americans who are struggling. There was that time over the summer, for example, that he joked about being “unemployed.”
The multi-millionaire stumbled into a similar situation in New Hampshire yesterday, reflecting on the times he feared losing his job. “I know what it’s like to worry whether you’re gonna get fired,” Romney said. “There were a couple of times I wondered whether I was going to get a pink slip.”
By all appearances, this is plainly false. Looking back over his career choices, there was simply never a moment at which Romney was likely to get fired from anything. Arguably the only people who wanted to give him a pink slip were his constituents in Massachusetts, who grew to dislike him quite a bit. But Romney didn’t give them a chance — rather than lose a re-election bid, the governor quit after one term.

Look who is replacing Pat Buchanan
it’s Robert Traynham, a black, gay former aide to Sen. Santorum. Uh-huh.
Traynham is well-known in LGBT insider politics, and received an on-air tryout just last week on Chris Matthews’ Hardball, when the black, gay, former Rick Santorum Director of Communications and senior staffer appeared in a segment to support his former boss.
Traynham was outed years ago while working for the then-Pennsylvania Senator, by journalist Mike Rogers. Santorum painted Traynham as a victim.
Sounds balanced to me. That’s so long as “balanced” means “batshit insane.”
