oh mitt, you’re making it too easy

The context: “I want individuals to have their own insurance. That means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy. It also means that if you don’t like what they do, you could fire them. I like being able to fire people who provide services to me. You know, if someone isn’t giving the good service, I want to say, I’m going to go get someone else to provide this service to.”

Even if the context lessens the stupidity of the remark, I’d guess Romney’s people are now on their 15th bottle of brandy. How many ads do you think will quote Mr Bain saying “I like being able to fire people”?!

The average person would have said “I like having a choice and being able to take my business elsewhere if I don’t get good service” but NOOOOOOOOO Mitt Romney says, “I like to fire people….”

Says a lot about who he really is.

I hope that these writers/journalist and pundits like kantor would quit trying to interpret the Obamas to us, they speak English, so we understand them. We see them and can read their body language for ourselves. We see their honesty and humanity in the way they interact with people. So stop trying to convince us to not believe our own eyes and ears

The Rapid Economic Recovery Republicans Are Praying Against
    Brian Beutler| January 9, 2012, 5:20 AM

Everything that’s supposed to happen in politics this year, and everything that has happened for the last several months, has been premised on the tacit, but seemingly safe assumption: The economy will remain weak for years. This has underlined Congressional jobs bill theatrics, campaign rhetoric about Obama’s record, debates about who’s to blame for high unemployment, and which party best represents the interests of the middle class. But what if that assumption is wrong?

A contrarian school of thought holds that it is wrong — and its proponents have a growing cache of evidence to back them up.

On the week that the BAIN BOMB is about to explode courtesy of the Gingrich Super Pac, Romney says the stupidest thing he could say which is “I like to Fire people”. I fully expect that line to be in Republican ads ASAP and will be fully used liberally in Democratic ads in the Fall if Romney is the nominee.

Romney’s Bain Capital Made Billions While Bankrupting Nearly One-Quarter Of The Companies It Invested In
By Pat Garofalo on Jan 9, 2012 at 9:25 am

Bain’s modus operandi was to invest in companies, leverage them up with debt, and then sell them off for scrap, allowing Bain’s investors to walk away with huge profits while the companies in which Bain invested wound up in bankruptcy, laying off workers and reneging on benefits.
And according to an analysis by the Wall Street Journal, this was far from an isolated incident. Adding insult to injury, Bain would hide its profits in tax havens, not even paying the rate it was supposed to on the profits it made laying off workers.

The Wall Street Journal, aiming for a comprehensive assessment, examined 77 businesses Bain invested in while Mr. Romney led the firm from its 1984 start until early 1999, to see how they fared during Bain’s involvement and shortly afterward. Among the findings: 22% either filed for bankruptcy reorganization or closed their doors by the end of the eighth year after Bain first invested, sometimes with substantial job losses. An additional 8% ran into so much trouble that all of the money Bain invested was lost. […]

China planning military base in Pakistan, Indian report says
    Freya Petersen| January 9, 2012 05:10

China is planning a military base in Pakistan, India Today reported, citing “a secret report prepared by the government’s joint intelligence committee.” According to the report: China is keen to build military bases in FATA, or the Northern areas, while Pakistan wants to counterbalance Indian naval forces by having a naval base in Gwadar. But it does not spell out the exact location of these bases.

    Gossip in Wonderland

A recent book titled “The Obamas” is the author’s take, reflecting her own opinions, on a remarkably strong relationship between the President and First Lady – both of whom share an unwavering commitment to each other, and to improving the lives of Americans. The book is about a relationship between two people whom the author has not spoken to in years. In fact, the author did not interview the Obamas for the book so the emotions and private moments described in the book, though often seemingly ascribed to the President and First Lady, reflect little more than the author’s own thoughts. These second-hand accounts are staples of every Administration in modern political history and are often exaggerated. And as those who have worked in this Administration will tell you, the scenes depicted in the book do not accurately portray how well the East and West Wings work together.

    Apologies if already posted!

One of the anecdotes that has received wide attention has been a supposedly secret Alice in Wonderland themed Halloween party in 2009. This was an event for local school children from the Washington DC area and for hundreds of military families, and certainly nothing that the White House was ashamed of.

While acknowledging that the press was allowed to attend, which in itself would seem to cast doubt on any alleged secrecy, the author contends that there was “no media coverage beyond the standard, limited pool report noting the president’s presence.” We would invite all readers to read that extremely detailed and colorful pool report, or the stories that emerged from the party, and decide for themselves. In addition, the event was previewed in the official White House Daily Guidance and discussed by then-Press Secretary Robert Gibbs on camera from the podium — before he dressed up as Darth Vader at the party of course. The White House released videos and photos of the event on whitehouse.gov and our Flickr account, hardly the actions of a conspiratorial cover-up. The author attempts to paint the fact that some involved in the film attended and were not singled out in previews of the event as an attempt to hide their involvement — this was a large event, word of their involvement was certain to be reported, and indeed it was.

This mischaracterization of a celebration in support of military families is unfortunate but also instructive. When book authors attempt to stretch isolated incidents into grandiose insights, they end up going down the rabbit hole.

Someone should have introduced this writer to Jerome Corsi, who produced the smear masquerading as a book entitled “Obama Nation”:

“This book is nothing but a series of lies that were long ago discredited, written by an individual who was discredited after he wrote a similar book to help George Bush and Dick Cheney get re-elected four years ago… The reality is that there are many lie-filled books like this in the works cobbled together from the Internet to make money off of a presidential campaign… We will respond to these smears forcefully.”

      The last sentence is key.

The Obamas will not be swiftboated. This petty writer is not going to smear one of the most grounded couples in the country and get away with it. Not this time. Not ever.

    Swiss central bank chairman resigns
    Luke Browne| January 9, 2012 09:44

Philipp Hildebrand, chairman of the Swiss National Bank (SNB), has resigned with immediate effect, the BBC has reported. Hildebrand has been accused of speculating on currency transactions only weeks before his central bank capped the Swiss Franc, shifting prices in his favor. It has been confirmed that Hildebrand’s wife Kashya purchased $504,000 in August, three weeks before the SNB’s intervention. According to Sky News, she made a 15 percent profit on the transaction. Hildebrand says he has since donated the profits to charity, according to the Associated Press.

      • January 9, 2012 at 12:53 pm

I second the ‘forget about the election and PBO carries on’ part. Both parties would save money that could be donated to education, maybe, or kept for the next presidential campaign by which time more mature/competent or saner GOPers may have materialized. Since PBO is going to win this one, why waste the time and money which goes to the already rich ad companies/networks anyways?

This is a little bit OT

Did anyone watch Oprah on OWN last night? I can’t believe she is going to interview Chris Christie next Sunday in his own house! They showed a preview of Christie and his wife and Oprah asking them if they see themselves in the Whitehouse in the future. Oprah is going to ask them why they think Romney is the right man for the job. Anyway, I was not happy with Oprah giving Christie the platform to spew his nonsense against PBO. All I can say is that Christie looks horrible sitting in a chair in his home, not an inspiring sight! Forgive me for being shallow.

Oprah does what she needs to stay relevant. Good with charities, but she is for the glory of Oprah. Just my take, over the years. As for Chrisitie sitting in a chair, I could make a joke but I remember someone last year mentioned here that he/she is rather portly also, so I must refrain. However, I will say, there is clearly no comparison to seeing PBO set himself down. Ever notice how suave he looks entering and exiting an automobile? Uhm, so fine !!

      • 51 Chi
        January 9, 2012 at 11:37 pm

Most of Oprah’s staff are right-wing Bush loving and GOP voting types…

That Sherry Shalata woman who’s now the executive person at the OWN network must be blackmailing Oprah or something because there is simply no reason why that woman remains in charge or even marginally influential over Oprah and her network…

The behind the scenes shows were very illuminating and if anything, seriously diminished Oprah in my view…

She surrounds herself with these Sherry Salata types who don’t seem to like or respect Oprah and yet she tries too hard to appease them and to appeal to the right wing types – so no real surprise here re: Christie…

I discontinued all my subscriptions to O magazine which I only started subscribing to after the republican women boycotted her for not having the Palin woman on her show during the elections…

A the time, I immediately ordered and paid for tons of subscriptions for every woman I knew and started a campaign to have everyone counter the GOP women boycott by subscribing to O magazine…

It was powerful and meant that O magazine actually benefited from that GOP boycott…

I finally ended all my subscriptions because I don’t see Oprah doing anything in support of this presidency or putting her considerable weight resources behind and towards helping America live up to its obligations and potential at this very defining moment…

And I especially did not want my money even indirectly supporting or enriching those horrid staff of hers I spied during her behind the scenes shows…

Oprah has such mind-bending resources that mean that she has no reason to be beholding to anyone and can freely speak truth to power – and the fact that she does not but chooses instead to play footsie from the sidelines is not only sad and disappointing but shameful…

History will also judge her actions during this presidency…

It was not enough to simply support a candidacy…

These times called for continued focus and commitment and tangible support of the President in the face of unprecedented obstruction and hostility…

And if Oprah with her big voice and considerable wealth demurred for fear of incurring the wrath of her right wing staff and the audience they cultivated for her…then shame on her…

Giving airtime to the very people who have created the terribly hostile and divisive environment we now find ourselves in as a nation and only to draw viewers to her ailing network, is another low point for this billionaire…

There comes a time when ones integrity, honor, decency and the desire to do the right thing must trump the bottom line…

Besides, this woman has enough money for a hundred lifetimes so what else is there to crave…

I cannot express enough, my deepest disgust and disappointment at Oprah who has essentially retrogressed to MIA status while churning out reality crap and mealy-mouthed support at a most imperative and incredibly defining point in our history…

Hi all. You might find this interesting and may be aware of the article already. Considering the argument about the Affordable Care Act and whether the constitution allows for the federal government the mandate its citizens to guy health insurance under the commerce clause the following link provides an interesting bit of history. Especially this paragraph “Others argue that the Constitution’s framers could not possibly have envisioned a congressional power to force purchases. However, in 1790, the first Congress, which was packed with framers, required all ship owners to provide medical insurance for seamen; in 1798, Congress also required seamen to buy hospital insurance for themselves. In 1792, Congress enacted a law mandating that all able-bodied citizens obtain a firearm. This history negates any claim that forcing the purchase of insurance or other products is unprecedented or contrary to any possible intention of the framers.” http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp1113618

Life, Liberty and Lies in New Hampshire

    =================

The Republicans talk about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but what they really mean is life as defined by them, liberty as defined by them, and the pursuit of happiness that they want you to have access to, as well as the happiness that they don’t want you to have access to. What Santorum needs to understand and accept is the fact that his definition of a family cannot and will not be everyone else’s definition of a family, and he has no democratic business trying use big government to try to ensure that it does.
    .
    .
So if you’re looking for a good reason to vote Republican, you might want to begin your search underneath a rock, because there are probably just as many, if not more, opportunities under there as you could ever hope to find within the filtered freedom promised by the GOP. Because regardless of all of the freedom laced rhetoric of these debates, one point still remains. Being promised freedom by the GOP is like being promised fair and balanced reporting by Fox News.

    gopolitico

And today, with attacks on Romney’s Bain record intensifying, the Private Equity Growth Capital Council has released a statement from interim president and CEO Steve Judge defending the industry in broad terms:

“There is a lot of misinformation being spread, purely for political purposes and on both sides of the aisle, as it pertains to private equity. What’s been lost is an understanding of the critical role that private equity investment plays in growing the U.S. economy and delivering more than a trillion dollars in investment returns to pension funds, endowments and charitable foundations. While the business model has evolved over time, the fact of the matter is private equity provides capital and operational expertise to companies that are often underperforming or on the brink of failure. In 2010 alone, private equity invested nearly $150 billion in U.S. companies. As a result, many businesses grow and are strengthened and often jobs are created over the long term.

It’s exactly Obama has been saying steve, you moron. Your types killed the jobs ‘over the long term’ and this admin is the one trying to bring them back.

Did anyone catch the View today. I just listen to that segment Hot Topic, and they talk about that book for a second or two. Barbara played a part of the interview she had with the First Couple before Christmas. Where the First Lady answer the question about her feeling confine and don’t like being in the White House. Then Barbara said that she was giving her opinion, and she went on to say she think the First Lady has been a wonderful First Lady, and even Elisabeth agreed, the audience seem to agree also. And you guys know darn well I agreed.

  20. January 9, 2012 at 12:41 pm

This rant is OT….apologies ahead of time. I WAS listening to thom hartmann and hit my foot on a chair rushing to turn him off because he had a guest on pushing the hillary/VP Biden switch because she would bring MORE power to the office since President Obama is so concilliatory. WHY WON’T THEY LET THIS GO! He brought up a speech the president gave a few weeks ago and stated “on paper it read progressive but in hearing it, he (PBO) used his weakest voice to deliver it”. WTF! thom let this stand and agreed in a “round about way”. WTF is wrong with all of these so-called progressives taking potshots and demeaning this president. I have NEVER heard one man so second guessed, polled, misrepresented, demeaned, disrespected and unsupported by OUR side in my adult life and it’s not because he’s a Dem, it’s because he’s BLACK. EVERY f’ing body has something to say about what he says, does, speaks and acts. Not once could thom have said “well, even though he’s weak and concilliatory, he is OUR candidate and we need to gather folks around him and make sure they vote for him”, not once. He went on about how it could help if hillary/VP Biden changed places, how she could help the president, etc. I am just sooooo sick of “our” side doing quite a masterful job of knocking the president all in the name of progressive value purity. thom is NOT the smartest man in the room, President Obama is and for him to keep second guessing every single thing the president does is infuriating. Oh, he will speak RELUCTANTLY on the accomplishments but he has to be pushed to do it and then he has a “remark” afterwards. When he has the lady reporter from the WH come on, he always makes snide remarks, ALWAYS, which is why I quit listening to him. I went to his message board once to ask why, when the POTUS makes a decision/action/statement, does he always turn the conversation to what/how/why/shouldn’t have/should have President Obama done/said/acted. Man, I was called deluded, bot, excuser, the range of names. I was even told to go to a liberal site. Now, my question, WHEN did progressives become a separate entity from the Democratic Party? they seem to see them outside the party and working for the “good” of the party by tearing down most things democratic, are they the new “tea party” on the left?. thom is just an example, he is knowledgeable agreed, but this thing he has of always snidely mentioning the president and his accomplishments is wearing thin. I don’t watch tv news, I either get it from the internet, TOD or the radio. In L.A., it’s Stephanie Miller, thom, Randi Rhodes in a row that I can stomach, and I skip thom. How the “f” are we Dems being represented with 6 hours a day of true PBO support? I will hold thom, rachel, ed, tweety, gigi, joan, carville, billygoat clinton, andrea, corp media and PL talking heads responsible if we lose this year. I am tired of their “damn by faint praise” speak….”stepping off soap box and adjusting blouse”…ENOUGH!

Thanks nospin, believe me I am and have been working on that. My problem is, we have 1 radio station that I know of in L.A. and 6 hours of support is all WE get. These so called progressives are using the Democratic umbrella to spew. I send emails, post on FB and tweet on twitter positive info I see and to have some folks reply back “thom thinks this or thom thinks that” which is in total opposition to what WE are trying to accomplish for 2012 is frustrating, to me. I guess some days, you just get “filled up” and can’t take another nano-second of the noise….today was again that day. I will never let any one deter me from working towards re-election in 2012 and the future, ever. It just pisses me off though….done  :)

“He brought up a speech the president gave a few weeks ago and stated “on paper it read progressive but in hearing it, he (PBO) used his weakest voice to deliver it”

This sentence sums up the mindset of the permanently professionally disgruntled Left. You’ll notice he dismisses the substance of the speech. He want an emotional release from it and the substance was secondary.

We’ve seen this before with the BP spill. Never mind that this is the President who negotiated $20 billion on behalf of those harmed, Maddow and Carville wanted to see and feel a rabble-rousing speech.

The sentence also illustrates that these people will Never. Be. Satisfied.

Problem is, after this President leaves these people are going to come looking for enthusiastic support from the people who watched the President they elected slandered and disrespected as much on the Left as he was on the Right.

I am going to always vote Democratic because in my view the survival of the country depends on it. But my passion and patience for the party I must voter is frequently tested to the breaking point by PUMAs and unpragmatic, strategically obtuse, emotionally immature progressives.

      • January 9, 2012 at 1:34 pm

THIS! And they will be looking for our support, believe me. As my aunt used to tell me when coming home from church….”today, my soul was filled”. Welp, today my tolerance level was filled with the noise. I will always vote for Democratic too but my enthusiasm level for groups in my party is dwindling….guess I’ll have to do like the thugs and hold my nose to vote in 2016, unless there’s a great candidate…..

          Take care of yourself Sankofa…

I too only listen to Randi Rhodes and Stephanie Miller…

It’s funny but just recently the “progressive” radio station here flipped and threw out Thom Hartmann replacing him with Glenn Beck…

          Yes, Glenn Beck…

It made no difference really since I haven’t listened to Thom “Michelle Bachmann is a formidable force” Hartmann in forever…

But think about it, there really isn’t any difference between the goals of Thom Hartmann and Glen Bleck who both work hard at demeaning the President and trying to strip him of support…

I find actually that shutting down these hostile voices on the left works for me…

They have in my opinion done so much more harm than the right wing who we already recognize for who they are…

As I’ve said before, with each passing day I sadly thank God that these destructive voices were never bankrolled as they’d complained and hoped for, by some wealthy liberal with money to start a network or radio stations…

Breathe, girl. breathe!!!!  (I assume from your screen name that you are female. Sorry if that’s incorrect…) These so-called progressives are really just haters. They want what THEY want, not what’s good for the country. Unfortunately, more than a few of them have some undercover racism thrown in. We’ve got to work even harder this year. Just like PBO, we have to work against the right and the left.

Sankofa, Please take a break and nurse your foot. Then contact your local OFA office to see how you can be of some help to them. If you can spare it, make a donation to Obama for America. I bet you will feel much, much better!!!

Aaaawwww isonprize, thanks and yep, I’m a she. I have gingerly put my foot into my sneakers to go take a walk while taking deep smog filled breaths. Trust me, I belong to an OFA gruop that does phone banking here in L.A. where I call and enter data in the computer, I donate when I can and talk UP the president and his accomplishments EVERY chance I get. “Some” people don’t like to see me coming….wonder why? This was just a rant for today, doesn’t change my support, without qualifiers, for President and Mrs. Obama. I’m a “happy clappy” dem (as Stephanie would say), I don’t get bogged down with the noise often. Today was just one of those days that hit my last nerve, that’s all..I’m good. Despite those that work against PBO’s goals, we true supporters are going to help win in 2012, I have absolutely no doubt about it. So again, thanks for caring isonprize and nospin, I was just ranting…….((((((hugz to you both))))).

This is a safe place to vent, Sankofa, so please know you are appreciated and supported here. You ARE doing valuable work with OFA. We all need to pitch in, even if we hesitate about phone banking. It works to sift out the real Obama voters and make sure they get involved and to the polls.

          “I was just ranting”

no worries. We all do that. It is hard to imagine the world we live in today. Up is down, down is up and sanity is very rare to find.

These people could make you scream and raise your blood pressure with the level of ignorance. When it gets to that level it helps to cut through the noise and hold on to what we know and work harder to get this President Obama and VP Biden re-elected. If only to see the looks on their faces and to watch the msm and all these faux liberals implode.

I am sure it will be a thing of beauty and is certainly worth fighting for. You are in the right spot Sankofa. Thanks for sharing.

How come the MSM Never picks up any of this crap that Romney says.
Instead, we have to listen to Christie, every segment!

Excellent summary of Romneybot’s bogus job creator claims and the absurdity of the premise upon which his campaign is built:

“Whatever you want to say about Romney’s time at Bain, the number he is providing to reporters, the number Stephanopoulos was asking about, the number Romney is using publicly, is not net-net. It takes three successful companies of the hundreds Romney was involved with and uses their employment totals now — long after Romney finished working with them. Even Pethokoukis, a Romney-friendly conservative, concludes, “That’s not going to cut it.”

It would be the equivalent of explaining President Ronald Reagan’s record by choosing the two best-performing states and then attributing their growth from 1980-2011 to Reagan’s presidency. That’s not, as Romney said at another point in the debate, “net-net.” That’s not even net.

But imagine you could get a perfect count of the jobs created and destroyed during Romney’s tenure at Bain, and you could get perfect clarity on Romney’s level of responsibility for each and every one of those jobs. You still wouldn’t have learned much of value. Romney’s record at Bain Capital is not comparable to Barack Obama’s record as President of the United States.

Romney was running a private-equity firm that specialized in leveraged buy-outs. Obama is president of the largest economy on earth during the worst economic crisis in 80 years. However Romney performed, however Obama is performing, the two jobs simply aren’t comparable. Romney is not being elected to issue debt, purchase private companies and try to return a profit for the taxpayer. He might be very good at doing all of that, but as president, that won’t be his job. It won’t even be close to his job.”

NASHUA, NH–First Lady Michelle Obama, continuing her two-day-a-week public schedule, hits Democratic strongholds in battleground Virginia this week to fund-raise for President Obama’s re-election and to handle some official duties. Mixing political and government business on trips always earns criticism because it means taxpayers shoulder some of the costs. Meanwhile, the Obama Team waits word if and when Mrs. Obama is going to pick up the pace.
On Wednesday, Mrs. Obama will be in Richmond to headline a Democratic National Committee lunch.
After that, according to the White House, Mrs. Obama will appear at Virginia Commonwealth University to deliver a speech where she will announce “a major commitment by the country’s top medical colleges and universities to create a new generation of doctors, medical schools, and research facilities to ensure that veterans, service men and women receive the medical care that they deserve.

The Supreme Court will hear arguments over the Texas GOP’s redistricting map
    By: seeta| January 09, 2012 at 11:00 am

From Bloomberg.com: As the election year dawns, the U.S. Supreme Court (1000L) is right in the thick of it. The justices return today from their holiday break to hear arguments on an expedited basis over minority voting rights in Texas’s congressional and state legislative districts. Together with disputes over immigration and health care, the redistricting case is part of a Supreme Court term with repercussions for November’s presidential and congressional elections.

The Hour Of The Jackals Is Upon Us

As we wait for the press briefing this afternoon, my thoughts go out to our amazing Press Secretary Jay “Clark Kent” Carney. He is brilliant and he has the patience of Job dealing with the jackals. I am preparing myself for the onslaught of deep and probing questions from these so called journalists about the catnip du jour which is the Jodi Kantor book. With all that is going on here and around the world, the very idea that any one finds this book news says volumes about the current state of the media in this country. I wonder if AP will ask about the book first or if it will be left to Norah O’Donnell to do the honors. We shall see.

I think it is a safe bet that front row jackals will spend their time on gossip about Michelle Obama, the Obama’s marriage and whatever catty crap Christie, Romney, Gingrich or Perry said on the trail.

It’s high school with better suits.

NASHUA, NH–Vice President Joe Biden will teleconference with New Hampshire Obama supporters on Tuesday night, similar to the teleconference President Barack Obama had for the Iowa caucus last week. In New Hampshire, the Obama team has seven offices–more than the six GOP presidential contenders. The campaign here has held over 500 events since April. The point here as in Iowa: the GOP rivals will move on–but the Obama forces will stay.

The Obama Manchester campaign office was humming on Sunday, full of volunteers. Just as in Iowa, the Obama team is using the vote to organize for November. Though Obama has no major challenger on the ballot, his 2012 drive even printed “doorhangers” to remind people to vote.

If Hillary was all that, then when didn’t she or her husband get a health care bill passed? If she is all that, then why didn’t she or her husband end DADT? Both Hillary and Bill did not do a fucking thing for the gay community, and if I hear Ronald Reagan Jr. bitch and moan one more time about what President Obama didn’t do for the gay community I’m going to blow a gasket. Come to think of Hillary has already been the Vice President, she did it for eight years in the 90’S.

Let’s dig into Romney’s outrageous comment: just fire your insurance company and get a new one. Which we could not do under the past system and for which the ACA is meant to solve.

First of all the incentive for the insurance companies is not to keep people well — they just deny care when you need it and refuse to cover on the off-chance you might need to actually collect on the services you have paid for. It’s the dumbest system known to man anyway, the for-profit insurance industry.

The cavalier notion that you just fire your insurance and go get another policy — what planet does this dumbass live on?

Only in the screwed up United States of 2012 would such an imbecile be remotely considered for president.
