King of Bain – the 60 second version
And the 30 second version:
Greg Sargent: There seems to be widespread agreement that the half-hour documentary attacking Mitt Romney’s Bain years that was released yesterday by the pro-Gingrich Super PAC was a very effective piece of political communication. Ed Kilgore, for instance, described it as a “heat seaking missle aimed directly at the white working class id”.
But what will South Carolina voters themselves see? Will this attack translate well in the 30-second and 60-second ads based on this documentary that the Newt Super PAC ad will run in the state?
…. Rick Tyler, the GOP operative who works for Winning The Future, says the ads are part of a $3.4 million buy that includes other media. We should obviously treat that figure with serious skepticism until the money is actually spent, but if that’s true, that’s a significant buy for South Carolina.

Robert Shrum: … what he spoke on election night in New Hampshire puts the presumptive Republican nominee at odds with the essential character of America. In a well-coiffed gentrification of the racist-tinged attack on Barack Obama as “the other” – a somehow alien and illegitimate president – Flip Romney, in full pander mode to the paranoia of the far right, arraigned the president for “tak[ing] his inspiration from the capitals of Europe” — and seeking “to turn America into a European-style entitlement society.”
…. In reality, Obama has been defending and extending the nation’s long march toward fulfilling its founding ideals. It’s Romney who, on critical economic issues, takes his inspiration from the capitals of Europe….
…. I doubt Romney will give up the xenophobia anytime soon. It plays well among primary voters who are suspicious that he’s not reliably reactionary; it’s a code-coated formula to depict Barack Obama as someone from another country, another continent, another tradition. In that sense, it’s a modulated form of “birtherism.”
Romney’s right when he says this election is about “the soul of America”. With his hostility to economic justice and the social safety net, his record in business, his desertion of the American quest for equal rights, and his embrace of floundering European economics, he would, if he ever got there, be the president of a very different and lesser United States…..

TPM: If a speech Thursday morning by one of his top economists is any indication, President Barack Obama is going all in with the 2012 re-election message of stemming the rise in income inequality and reforming a system that’s increasingly perceived to be rigged in favor of the rich.
White House Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Alan Krueger rattled off a flurry of statistics illustrating the rise of inequality and its connection to the shrinking middle class. He blamed it on economic policies tilted to favor top earners – including income tax reforms (presumably during the Bush era) and the “drastic cut in the estate tax.”
He also argued that implementation of the Affordable Care Act, which Republicans are eager to repeal, will help reduce the disparities.
It’s a message that bore an uncanny resemblance to the “Teddy Roosevelt” speech President Obama delivered in early December, which was interpreted by many as laying out the grounds for his re-election campaign …. Romney has taken to decrying this message as the “politics of envy” and “class warfare” …. Krueger’s speech Thursday makes clear that that’s a fight the White House is happy to have.

Our old GOPolitico friend Byron Tau got very excited today about the date on that DoJ memo on recess appointments. Read and learn Byron:
Mother Jones: ….. The opinion itself is dated January 6, two days after the appointments were announced – but that doesn’t mean the opinion was sought retroactively. “It is common, especially where time is of the essence, to give legal advice prior to a formal written opinion,” says Marty Lederman, a former attorney with the Office of Legal Counsel. “It takes time to produce an opinion with this level of detail.”
Young Byron then updated his post with this: White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters in the briefing that the DoJ memo was based on advice given by the president’s Office of Legal Counsel. “The opinion was rendered verbally prior to the date of the opinion itself,” Carney said, explaining the discrepancy. “The opinion was based on the advice provided by OLC”
Discrepancy?
Byron? Quit while you’re that far behind behind.

1st?
Holy smoley, I’d hardly clicked ‘publish’!
WOW…I feel so special
Thanks Chips!
Parents-in-chief:
Sasha and Malia are both in middle school. So crazy. She was in 2nd when the Prez came in.
So nice, good parents.
Such wonderful life partners too!!!
Every woman should have a lover who looks at her the way he does her and has no qualms picking up and carrying her shoes after he’s probably had an even more grueling day!!!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS COUPLE!!!!
ROCK ON PRESIDENT & MRS OBAMA, ROCK ON!!!
Yes, that shoe thing got me.
100% concur.
first?
I’m happy to share my prize rocket with you Dee!
woww! Never even tried for first, thanks, Hopefruit 2, but you deserve it! It just amazes me, that people could be for Mitt, if they really looked closely. he just doesn’t have that easiness to be my president. I have a friend that is just like him, and he is steadily opening his mouth and getting himself in hot water.
Here’s a little rocket for you Dee:
gracias (as she chuckles) !
Well isn’t Mr. Kreuger easy on the eyes?
I read the article earlier so I can gawk at the photo now.
Avaunt! To the Naughty Mat ™ with thee!
Pffffft…..I can still see him from the naughty mat.
I’m sure Chips has her most recently ordered supply of naughty mats on hand….
Oh, a wife doesn’t laugh like that at something her husband says unless… well, ok, I think we need a male version of the Naughty Mat ™ for me.
Liberal Librarian, talk to Chipsticks, maybe she will give you a naughty mat.
I am with you LL!
Yes, indeed! Great appointment!
Hey Mr. Kreuger!
I see Mr. Roger’s ghost on Bain Street (in the Romney’s America Cartoon above) singing, “It’s an ugly day in the neighborhood…”
Ok, that last video of Barack whispering to Michelle: Why do I always get naughty thoughts at seeing it?
He loves doing that. He’s a good man. I’ll leave it that. No naughty thoughts for me.
Did you hear FLOTUS when she said that after a Christmas party , after a line of about shaking hands with 300 people, she kick her shoes off and POTUS was picking them up to take them up stairs. Now isn’t that one special man.
I just love that picture of POTUS whispering in FLOTUS ear and she is laughing her head off.
Yes, anniebella our FLOTUS said in the Barb Wa interview that POB is very romantic. It was so cute the way FLOTUS said it. I love seeing them showing their respect and love for each other. I have not seen this in the WH for many, many years. It is fun and so sweet.
I am not saying that other Presidents did not, but we just see this beautiful First Couple in such lovely moments that makes us so happy for them and about them. Love them.HZ
I hear it and I thought it was so cute. And how Gayle King is wishing for the PBO&FLMO to have another little Obama. Loved the interview.
Obama/Biden2012
He sure is.
SWOON
That 30 second ad is too chopped up and the message is lost. Actually I don’t like either of them, but I’d just pull any money paying for the 30 second ad and buy extra 60 second ads. I don’t like either because they don’t focus on Romney making tens of millions while the jobs were lost and small investors were screwed, or point out how Romney raided the pension funds – which the tax payers then had to cover in part.
“Home Depot says it plans to hire 70,000 temporary workers at US stores for spring selling season – @CNNMoney”
But I thought the Home Depot CEO said that hiring wouldn’t start until PBO was out of the White House?
And he donates huge sums to Repub candidates.
And Lowe`s owner is the exact same.
i have always believe that these companies were not hiring because they want to help the Republicans. They want the unemployment numbers to be high, so it could hurt Obama. Some of these companies are sitting on 2 trillion dollars, but yet refuse to hire. it’s a tactic to try to help the Republicans.
That was his hate talking. Clearly he knows you hire people because they are needed when greater demand for products and services is anticipated. Someone has to help the customers and the fact they are hiring proves, much to his chagrin, that the economy is getting better.
And Robney poll in SC is dropping, he is already in a statistical tie with Gingrich.
Lol!
Santorum should drop out. Gingrich would win both SCarolina and Florida if he did. S.Carolina and Florida are both winner-take-all.
Have the Christian leaders had their meeting yet, where they were going to try to decide on a consensus candidate and not split their votes? I would think they might have landed on Santorum.
The meeting is this weekend.
Me and Mr ByronTau went at for a bit until. I told him to let me introduce him to a real journalist. I then linked him one eclectablog writings. tomorrow i will link him to rootless of the peoples view. everyday showing him the difference between gossip and true jouranlistic reporting. He went silent quick. LOL!
A+ Tulips. That’s how it’s done. Brava!
Excellent.
This is what we need more of! Hit them hard and hit them often right up to election day. Good job, Tulips~
Excellent. May I suggest Deaniac83 at The Peoples View, also.
Excellent.
EXCELLENT!
My Mama always said, “you can show them better than you can tell them”. Tulips you did good, real good.
Well done Tulips! I think the TPV, which features both eclectablog and rootless, as well as the brilliant Deaniac, and our own equally brilliant Tien Le, could teach the so called MSM journalists how to do fact based journalism. There is nothing wrong with having a point of view so long as you back it up with factual information. This trend in the MSM that relies on gossip and right wing political talking points makes a mockery of what journalism should be about.
Gingrich has a few good web ads, but they’re useless unless he puts them on television.
Here’s his latest -
Actually a moderate has a better chance against Pres.Obama than a full on wingnut like Santorum. In fact national polls have shown that Newt loses by a way bigger margin than Romney.
The thing is that Mittens isn’t a moderate. Oh, I don’t think he believes half the crap he’s been spewing, but that just makes it worse. He’s playing a rabid conservative to get the nomination, and there’s no way the Obama campaign will let him swing back to the middle if he’s the nominee. Really, only GOP primary voters are paying attention right now. Once the general starts, Obama’s team will hang the GOP primary around whoever the nominee is.
Yeah, I know he’s not a moderate so that’s why I said “A” moderate.
Yea but is Mitt a moderate? Mitt has sold his soul to the conservative party and if he make it to the general election, he can’t then try to pretend to be a moderate. Those conservatives wouldn’t like that at all.
So Mitty boy has back himself into a corner and he will have to stay there.
I’m not sure what Mitt is.
I don’t think he does, either.
I was speaking generically. Mitt is whatever is most profitable to his portfolio.
The reality is that the media pushes the meme that Willard “Mitt” Romney and Jon Huntsman are moderates. Sadly many Americans tend to buy the memes pushed by the media. Having said that, I don’t think Willard “Mitt” Romney can afford to tack to the middle given his cynical pandering to the conservatives during the primaries. If he decides to campaign as a moderate during the general elections, he risks the possibility of further alienating teabaggers.
Crikey, it’s all guns blazing from the Gingrich crew. Poor Mitt.
And it’s working. Mittens is dropping like a stone in SC.
Saw something on twitter today that the big boys had asked Newtie to back off Bain, and he had agreed.
I saw that he pretty much told them to F*** off. He went on “Fox and Friends” and defended his attacks against Bain, saying that there’s a difference between capitalism and what Bain under Mittens did, and that it was a valid discussion to have. And as the ads above show, he’s going all in for SC. And why shouldn’t he? He’s in a dead heat with Mittens as of the latest polling.
But it’s still out there, and might have given folks enough pause on Romney to get Newt back in the game. I think Gingrich is dumb as hell if he stops with the Bain attacks though, it’s not like the GOP power brokers stepped in to get Romney to stop carpetbombing Newt in Iowa. Newt should tell them to screw off and keep running his campaign.
See above; he pretty much did.
Really LL?? Wow … I’m lovin’ this!
Insider Advantage: Mitt 23%, Newt 21%.
Excellent! Crikey, I’m cheering Newt
Wow, Newt is going for broke. Ha!
…what gift Newton Leroy is, who would have thought he was going to make such a difference (in our favor) in the 2012 election?!?! The Fat Lady is getting ready to sing…Rob-you-and-me, can say “au-revoir”
Just blocked someone on twitter. Nothing really offensive but they post way too much and seem all over place. Just annoyed the hell out of me.
In any case, I’m asking around but do any of you visit blogs/sites that have nothing to do with politics? Nothing whatsoever.
I would appreciate some recs even if you think I might not be interested.
Youtube – when I crave a visit down memory lane, for old songs, TV commercial jingles, etc…(LOL!)
Oh yes I do that already. Some time last year I had a yearning to hear Eartha Kitt and now have a playlist of some of her music. I noticed that with some singers, youtube automatically creates a play list of their songs instead of you having to look them up yourself.
If you like figure skating: http://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/
Oh I love watching figure skating.
http://www.Nationalgeographic.com
I go there occasionally for wallpapers for my desktops and the photography contests they have.
My favorite literature website: http://www.themillions.com/
this site is not coming up. Not sure if its my search engine or the site. Will try later.
If you like trivia, quizzes, useless facts, try Mental Floss: http://www.mentalfloss.com/
Just ran across this cute post (okay, it’s fictional politics, but I couldn’t help myself):
11 Outrageously Obscure ‘West Wing’ Characters Who Resurfaced on Twitter
http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/113221
That’s a cool site. I’m going to share this with my younger sister. She and I would get a kick out of the info on here.
Did you post the other West Wing link on twitter? I could have sworn I saw a tweet about it today.
Glad you like the recommendation.
I’m not on Twitter, so that must have been some other cool person who posted that link.
How about reading about Google Doodles — the background stories behind some of them are really interesting.
http://www.google.com/doodles/finder/2012/All%20doodles
That’s a good one too. I love background stories or behind the scenes look. My favorite Google Doodle was the guitar (?) where you play it using your mouse/
The Les Paul birthday one. I LOVED that one too.
One of mine is:
http://www.gardenguy.com/
He focuses on gardening in the desert for us “extreme gardening” folks. He’s local so his site is not a big deal but I like it and I have his book.
Somehow I knew that he would be your guy
I have his Extreme Juice…for fertilizer…he’s very knowledgeable. I can’t garden here to save my life.
Sadly I have no space to garden. Its funny, I love love the city but would also love a place where I could grow flowers and veggies. Not sure which I want more.
Thanks for the recs guys. Very interesting sites and great to see I have similar interests to some of you here.
I go to some cooking sites like Saveur, Epicurious, Americas Test Kitchen. I also go to travel sites, like Concierge.
FLOTUS is now at 185K+ followers on Twitter!
YES!! And I am one of them even though I don’t tweet.
For those who haven’t read this yet…
Chips, I’m going to be a real pain the neck, and re-post this from the previous thread. But no pressure is intended…really…
We’ve shared various strategies here on TOD about how to get accurate information out about President Obama, and his administration’s, achievements. But we’ve haven’t–to the best of my knowledge– created a plan on how we would use social platforms and media outlets to accomplish this. Donna Dem and WhatISWorking had great ideas and have posted suggestions that we could also implement. I’d like to throw an idea into the mix, if I may.
I’d like to know if we could have a News Dump Day where we agree on a theme (such as health care reform, the benefits of the American Jobs Act, payroll tax extension, raising the tax on the wealthy, alternative energy, green jobs, etc.), and we each commit to sending a set number of articles (1-3) to at least five, or more, individuals that we know. We could use Twitter, FaceBook, and websites that aren’t on our blogroll. I think Fridays or Saturdays might be the best days to attempt this. There’s so much good information that’s posted here that would go a long way towards informing the public and helping to lay the foundation for President Obama’s re-election.
What do you think?
Regarding the Affordable Care Act, I came across this website. It speaks in plain language; has a simple, non-wonky interface; and even includes a fun little game (you get to pretend to be a person going through life, and decide whether or not to avail yourself of the ACA benefits when illness/accidents strike. When you reach the end, you see how better off you would be if you had chosen the ACA benefits as they were made available to you). I think it would be helpful in explaining the benefits of the ACA to people who aren’t aware, or are against it.
http://thanksobamacare.org/
Thanks, Arnie. That’s helpfull.
You’re very welcome!
creole- Keep being a pain in the neck. it is so important to follow through on this!
Ok, I did it. I have a twitter account and I am following 11 people all ready. TOD of course, Michelle, the Obama 2012 campaign. I have a stupid question. If I am following 11 folks does that mean they are following me as well? My name is AnotherSignUp1
No, they have to specifically click on the “follow” button to follow you. Off to do that right now!
Nope. They have to follow you, just like you followed them.
Nope people have to follow you at their will.
Or their peril!
Welcome to Twitterland, I’m following you!!
YEAH!!! I have 4 folks following me. I guess what my mom said was true….I am special. tehehe.
Thanks,
“I guess what my mom said was true….I am special”
It’s kind of weird at first, but unless you’re famous, you have to tweet a lot to get more followers. The more you tweet, the chances of those that follow you retweeting you are greater. And then that gets you exposed to others who might want to follow you. It’s like being in a big room full of gossipers and people sort of congregate around interesting conversations and then tell others who then want to join in. It’s weird!!
Pepsi to Pay $3.13 Million for Hiring Discrimination Against Black Workers

Romney’s Tax Cut For Millionaires Would Be Nearly Twice The Size Of George Bush’s
By Pat Garofalo on Jan 12, 2012 at 3:00 pm
As we’ve been noting, Mitt Romney’s economic plan calls for a massive tax cut for the rich, even while the plan would likely result in a tax increase on millions of middle class families. And as it turns out, Romney’s tax cuts for the rich would dwarf even those put in place by George W. Bush in 2001 and 2003, as Center for American Progress Director of Tax and Budget Policy Michael Linden noted:

Saw this link on twitter—-interesting as it breaks Rush Limbaugh’s $28 million annual salary down by the day etc.——$116,000/day—–for spreading the worst hate and fear and lies and saying the most vile things ever said on the airwaves. Unbelievable. Something is wrong with this picture.
http://www.salary-money.com/rush-limbaugh-salary-28000000.php
And who owns Clear Channel Communications? Why Bain Capital of course.
Creepy—-it looks like the corporate takeover is almost complete. I keep seeing evidence all over the place. President Obama is the only thing standing in the way. Literally.
Sold his Soul. Guess what, you fool limbag, it ain’t worth the price you will pay. ’nuff said.
17 Of The Top 20 Biggest Political Donors This Election Cycle Are Conservative |
By Ian Millhiser on Jan 12, 2012 at 11:00 am
Egged on in no small part by the Supreme Court’s decision to turn campaign finance into the wild west, a small group of donors have gotten increasing aggressive in their efforts to us their enormous wealth to influence elections. As Mother Jones lays out, this has given a decided advantage to Republicans and conservative candidates. Seventeen of the top 20 spenders seeking to buy election results are conservative: [Click on link to see graph]
Read more: http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/01/12/403112/17-of-the-top-20-biggest-political-donors-this-election-cycle-are-conservative/
Only recourse Dems might have is making the fact that they’re trying to buy the election an issue. Pres. Obama can start framing it my making it an issue during the SOTU when he should have 25M+ viewers. He needs to mention Citizens United and the up coming election season where there will be hundreds of millions of dollars spent on third party attack ads – paid for by secret donors with no limits.
Still, they are spending lots of money in the primary.
I remember Rove did a 20 million dollar ad buy this summer. That is a waste!
To me, Romney always has a confused expression on his face. Maybe he’s thinking of his next flip-flop or trying to sort out his lies.
Stereotyping Black Women. I Love Me Some Michelle Obama Pics!
Posted by TiMT on January 12, 2012
Michelle Obama is A Symbol of Transcendence. The importance of Michelle Obama is not only to Black Women but also to all women of all colors who have struggled for civil rights, the right to vote, equal pay, equality, the right to own her body, the right to education, etc. Michelle Obama mirrors it all because she is the by-product of years of women’s’ struggle. But, her transcendence is intentionally being suppressed by the main stream media, the good ol boys club, and the man’s world. The man’s world still wants to keep it all locked up since changing a 400 years old stereotype is considered disadvantageous and a treat to their supremacy.

Everybody should read this. All I had to comment was…..Thank you !!. And I thank you as well, creolechild. When they demean Mrs. Obama, they demean me, my mother, my grandmother, etc. etc.
YES!
I would love to ask the folks in the video if they’re gonna vote for Obama. Indiana folks are a bit to the right except for Lake county.
Obama won Indy by a 2 to 1 margin, won Bloomington, Lafayette, even Evansville—–almost everywhere there was a university—surprise/surprise.
McCain won all the rural areas, surprise/surprise, and people like those featured in the film likely voted against their self-interest.
191,939! She rocks my world! And I don’t even tweet!
Well i don’t tweet, if I did I would be right there too.
anniebella, you can bookmark someone on their twitter page, then you can read what they tweet, and also their replies to other, without having a twitter account of your own. @DalaiLama is one I check daily, also PBO, and my daughter, and a few others who interest me. Not many but you don’t have to use twitter to follow them.
Thank you Pamela.
Hey, Chipsticks? What means dote?
Hi Pamela, ‘you’re a dote’ means ‘you’re a sweetheart/lovely/kind’, etc. I think I’ve only heard people of Irish or British (especially Scottish) extraction use it in that sense, or am I completely wrong?!
I did a double take when first you called someone a dote—–I’ve always heard it used as a synonym for “fool” or “imbecile” or something similar. Of course I knew that’s not what you meant, so I assumed it had a diff meaning in your neck o’ the woods.
I believe the word you’re thinking of it “dolt”.
Right, I knew this was different, also because it was used by our Chips! Lol, Chips you called me that last week when I was helping CanuckJoyce, funny how I needed to know more when you used it to describe kitty cat!
Naw….
Ohhhhhhhh——-I think you are right about that. ooops, said Perry.
I’m good, thanks, but have a slight case of the stupid tonight. I’ll be better tomorrow after I finish reading the dictionary tonight.
“I’ll be better tomorrow after I finish reading the dictionary tonight.”
You’re a dote!!!
As in, we dote on YOU, Chips! You are the best of the best!
LOL
That’s what Hormer Simpson says, “Duh”.
Aww, well, then, thank you, that describes my Maine Coon perfecty!
Also, I have a Scottish lady I care for, I will ask her tomorrow.
The United Farm Workers of America have endorsed President Obama for reelection.
UFW president Arturo Rodriguez: “We are proud to endorse President Obama in this historic year during which the UFW celebrates its 50th anniversary. We are proud to stand with President Obama because he has stood with farm workers and immigrants over the last three years,”
Nice!
Nice!!
YESSSSSS!!!!
Bravo UFW!
Giuliani to Newt- what the hell are you doing?
Lol!
Noot to jooliani, duh, I don’t know.
Newt should channel Charlie Sheen and reply “Winning!”
Hoot!
Ofa is having a big voter registration weekend! Please signup?
Maybe chips can put it on the post?
195,520. Show ‘em how it’s done, FLOTUS! I can’t wait for the moment MythRobney eats her dust! My daughter in the Solomon’s followed her from sun rise there, so it’s moving all around the world! Like a love wave!
Go Leroy!!!!!
Right on Sir. Mankini!
Andrew Sullivan mentioned in a piece on “When Mitt Romney came to town” that the backers have bought time in S.Carolina to air the whole 28 minute ad/film.
Newt could win the primary if he goes populist and keeps attacking Romney for being representative of what is wrong with America and Capitalism. Folks know the game is rigged against them, if he could tap into that he could really strike a nerve and win the nomination.
I’d love to think lots of people would watch the 28 minute film, but I have my doubts. The 30 and 60 second versions might do the trick.
I think the film is powerful but it could have used better editing. Some of it is redundant in the way it tells the story. It could have an even greater punch if it was tightened up more.
Yeah, hopefully Obama Campaign has it’s own ads that are much better on messaging.
I knew it. This will be very exciting.
I really want to see that movie and so does my son.
Me too, DrDemocrat! A very good friend of mine who was a member of Tuskegee Airmen passed away three years ago. He used to tell me the stories of what Black folks had to go through to enlist in the Army Air Corps and the Marines. He also gave me a copy of a VHS documentary aired by PBS in the 1970′s or 1980′s about the history of Black soldiers going as far back as the American revolutionary war through the Vietnam war. It has a fascinating segment dealing with the Tuskegee Airmen and their role in World War II that is pretty much omitted from history books.
Just in- Steven colbert announces an exploratory committee for President!
Hands over his super PAC to Jon Stewart.
—
That just ate into Ron Pauls base. Seriously!
why’d he give his PAC to that loser?! Thought he’d give it to a charity or something. Can’t stand Stewart
I would call Colbert Must See TV tonight. He says, “I am proud to announce that I am forming an exploratory committee to lay the groundwork for my possible candidacy for President of the United States of South Carolina.”
Colbert is an absolute gem.
Beyonce and mom made shirt for Pres. Campaign!

I love itm Martz! Very classy..thank you!~
That Jody Kantor totally miscalculated on that book. FLOTUS is LOVED! Not just by us on this blog, but by numberless others. Kantor has cooked her goose, I think.
Another word about dote…..our family used it as a verb…to dote on something, meaning to really like, adore, think the world of…..So to me it has always been a favorable term. I think it may be Southern in usage. My mother was born in Texas and used that word.
Words are fun and funny. We kind of collect them and love to hear new ones…..so using dote as a noun is a new way, and is fun.
Thank you, carolyn, that is the customary usage, and one I am familiar with. It is a loving and secure expression, implying trust and honesty!
