But, but, but: he said Congress is in session!

Looks like President Obama’s recess appointments were ……… legal.

No, I don’t want it to be said that Don is not a reasonable person. Jacquelineoboomer, you are indeed first.

The chair recognizes the gentleman with three letters in his first name. But gives an unqualified honorable mention to the lady with er a lot of letters in her sign on name.

Ah! I missed it all, having headed off to Twitter earlier.

I will “compromise”: You’re all right.

And, Don, you are first in my book! And, Donna, apparently you can tell time, which is better than … er … never mind. :)

Look Jacqueline, for a person like me, who most assuredly is always the last to post on this wonderful blog, I think you had a legitimate claim on being tied for first; especially if the fiercely ethical donna dem 4 obama vouched for you! In any any case, there is absolutely no shame in coming in second in a photo finish, which in my judgement might look –for us untrained mortals — as a tie. I must also confess for my ulterior motive in supporting your claim for a tie. You see, the real reason I always comment here last when people have moved on to other posts is not entirely because I am in San Diego, which is practically on the Mexican boarder. The real reason is that I am technologically challenged. What takes a computer savvy person to type in a second takes me more than 10 minutes to type and send. That is why I’ve pretty much resigned myself to the reality that there is no way I will ever come first on TOD even if I were to wake up at 3AM in San Diego to compete with people on EST. I also truly believe that a one minute separation should be regarded as a tie. Bottom line: Congrats to Don and Jacquelineoboomer for the photo finish, with the win to Don by a nose!

  2. January 12, 2012 at 3:49 pm

Chips, I’m going to be a real pain the neck, and re-post this from the previous thread. But no pressure is intended…really… :)

We’ve shared various strategies here on TOD about how to get accurate information out about President Obama, and his administration’s, achievements. But we’ve haven’t–to the best of my knowledge– created a plan on how we would use social platforms and media outlets to accomplish this. Donna Dem and WhatISWorking had great ideas and have posted suggestions that we could also implement. I’d like to throw an idea into the mix, if I may.

I’d like to know if we could have a News Dump Day where we agree on a theme (such as health care reform, the benefits of the American Jobs Act, payroll tax extension, raising the tax on the wealthy, alternative energy, green jobs, etc.), and we each commit to sending a set number of articles (1-3) to at least five, or more, individuals that we know. We could use Twitter, FaceBook, and websites that aren’t on our blogroll. I think Fridays or Saturdays might be the best days to attempt this. There’s so much good information that’s posted here that would go a long way towards informing the public and helping to lay the foundation for President Obama’s re-election.

    What do you think?

We need at least a dozen volunteers to start. I hope others state that they are willing to participate.

      • January 12, 2012 at 4:35 pm

Aqua said they’ve talked about a similar strategy over at Deaniac’s spot. She may be able to get a feel on who wants to participate. So far, we have AnitaW, Aquagranny, donna dem, and me…is anyone else interested?

        • January 12, 2012 at 5:13 pm

I haven’t seen DesertFlower here today but I bet she will be IN. We have talked about this before and also our great Bobfr is fab at messaging and Tweeting. What about Tienle? She’s a stellar strategist. What about Dorothy Rissman and Trumpdog also if they have the time? I know we talked about this at TPV. That’s just a few I can think off the top of my head.

This need not take a lot of our individual time. It would just be more coordinated. I know some of us our sending out links all the time to the people we know..

          • January 12, 2012 at 5:24 pm

Thanks aqua! Would you mind spreading the word at TPV to get Deaniac’s take?

            • January 12, 2012 at 5:46 pm

Will do! And I don’t know about everyone else but Saturdays would work best for me but I will go with what everyone else decides.

            • January 12, 2012 at 5:47 pm

Aqua, Bobfr also discussed a strategy similar to the Dem Rapid Response. That could also be a component for those who have additional time to be involved in that end. Maybe when Bobfr shows up he could explain it in greater detail.

              • January 12, 2012 at 6:08 pm

I’ve already cut and pasted your post about this over at TPV. I will let you know about feed back. While I have every confidence in our team and committed Democrats this election will not be a Sunday stroll in the park. Repugnants will use every dirty tactic, smear campaign and misinformation to spin their candidates and MSM will help them. We must all be prepared to use every resource at our command to get the truth and positive messages out far and wide. Please you all, Remember that for each person you reach personally with valid information, you have probably touched 5 or more in that person’s sphere. Ripples in a pond folks, you never know how far they will go.

Thanks, creolechild :) I was at work…then I had to call my sister and find out how our VP Biden did today in Ohio ….my sister said he was AWESOME!!! He made her cry, talking from his heart about his personal experiences…she said he really connected with everyone there. Arne Duncan was there, Sherrod Brown, the Mayor of Columbus, lots of pols from Ohio….she said that she was so glad that she got to go. She also told me that she saw my picture on the wall, honoring graduates from the school…..her son’s picture was there as well…honoring him as a graduate, and as serving his country in the US Army. She had no idea that was there, so she was very moved by that.

                • January 12, 2012 at 8:22 pm

Thank you for sharing this here. I got teary myself just reading of your Sis’s experience and I knew you were special “She saw my picture on the wall honoring graduates…”

Don’t know if you saw my wishes for your Hubby on his job interview but I hold you and your family in my heart and send positive wishes for your success and prosperity.

Last: I LOVE ME SOME JOE BIDEN! Our Prez showed some of his best judgment selecting Joe for VP. Joe Biden is a decent, loyal and very good man just like our Prez.

Nah! You don’t have to Tweet. I don’t but my family does so I make them do it, lol. Remember when we all talked at TPV about getting info and positive messages out there strong? Lots of ways we can do that through our email, FB or Twitter with family and friends. You are a fierce supporter of our Prez so I have “drafted you” to be “One A” (Sorry, for the little joke here) ♥ Sweetie, please read creolechild’s original post. • January 12, 2012 at 4:43 pm

Hey Chips, that’s the beauty of the plan. It’s very simple. TODers can decide what we’ll send out and then we just go ahead and do it! Everyone has to keep the balls up in the air juggling work, home, and other responsibilities but this will be easy to do. Thank you for supporting this idea. I think it’s important that we start now to combat the craziness that’s sure to follow after the GOP selects its candidate.

    • January 12, 2012 at 4:35 pm

I will repeat my post from the old thread

I am in, I am preparing web pages with articles about the issues, so it fits right in with thsi idea. We can either chose old articles from my page or the new ones we find the day we do the action. I just love this blog.

As soon as I catch up I am going to make a “payroll tax extension” page, that issue will be brought up again once congress gets back from recess.

    • January 12, 2012 at 4:39 pm

creole- I think you need to repost this daily so that a plan can actualise. Remember, we do get caught up commenting on life’s wonders, but the reality of productive outlay for 4 more for 44, is one that we here at TOD need to come to grips with immediately, if not before!

      • January 12, 2012 at 4:45 pm

Good idea, ladyjazz! Maybe we can post it on the sidebar so that’s it’s visible and we can see how much progress we’re making. We also have to see if anyone here is willing to reach out to other prag sites to see if they’re willing to join us.

    • January 12, 2012 at 5:12 pm

I also print information to share with people that I do not have e-mail addresses for.

Mormons feel misunderstood by Americans and the mainstream: poll
    Lillian Rizzo| January 12, 2012 13:23

Mormons in the United States are getting more attention as Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman, both members of the Mormon church, are in the race for the Republican seat in the 2012 presidential election. In the latest poll taken by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, 1,000 Mormons answered questions about their faith and on the overall said they felt uneasy in the spotlight and misunderstood by Americans in the mainstream, The New York Times reported. Still, a majority of the people surveyed, self-proclaimed members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said they were confident about their religion and did believe that American people were ready to elect a Mormon as president, the Washington Post reported.

I would be interested to know what they think of lying and liars.

      • January 12, 2012 at 5:19 pm

This is what gets me about Romney. He was a leader in his church and must have thousands of people whom he guided and counseled. And for him to lie so effortlessly is disgusting. And then to announce yesterday that his campaign in S. Carolina won’t resort to ugliness and will “maintain truth” – my mouth actually fell open. He either doesn’t care or he doesn’t realize he’s lying.

Off topic – I wanted to send a tweet (but the conversation has moved on) asking Romney if it was racism or stupidity that allowed his son to make a birther “joke” about the American-born President of the United States, the very office Romney’s seeking, knowing full well that Romney’s father ran for President after being born in Mexico. Hypocrites.

Theo, I think you should have! I remember George Romney’s run for the Presidency. Nobody ever raised a question about his birth certificate. What sank him was his claim that he had been brainwashed in supporting the Vietnam war. IMO birtherism is all about racism. PERIOD!

I wonder if they feel a little bit like the Muslims in this country, under attack from the party that their Presidential candidates belong to. Maybe they’ll put themselves in others’ shoes and help to share some compassion for people’s religion.

As a mormon, or correctly, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, we believe” that all men can worship as they please” We believe that Jesus is the Christ and we should live our lives to be worthy of His presence. Most of us strive to show compassion, spend our time and talents, money by sharing ourselves (ie, Katrina clean-up). . Our underwear is not magic, but a reminder of the covenants we have made with our Father in Heaven. I am a big supporter of pres Obama, and put my money where my mouth is. We have freedom to live our lives as we wish and as in Romney’s case, screw up. We are also held accountable by the Lord when we do so, and have to answer to HIM. Been an African-American mormon for 30 years, and it has been one the best choices I have ever made!

When we discuss our religious affiliation, there are so many misconceptions, that it takes time to clear out the trash. It can’t be explained in a sound bite. It is our pleasure to share it with you. But, if you knew our history in depth, the crap Joseph Smith ( and also our people) went through when he received the “gold plates” from 14 till he was martyred at 34, you would understand. It is a step-by-step process, nothing to play with casually. Yes, we do things differently in some ways, but we won’t push it on you. ( Yeah, the missionaries can be over-zealous at times, but they just want to share what we have.) All have agency, you can take it or leave it. It’s not always easy, but it so worth it! Not trying to make this a religious class, just trying to answer questions, (as she backs out the door, closing it quietly).

They won’t have any more compassion because they think that they are elite therefore they are governed by a different standard. This is why his son could make such a callous statement knowing that his grand father was born in Mexico and he wouldn’t want anyone to make disparaging remarks about him.

      • January 12, 2012 at 5:21 pm

Plus, we can’t be sure that President Obama hasn’t ever had his shoes shined either – his shoes are always so shiny. This is a non-issue. Better to use the picture of the guy holding Mitt’s chair on the ground while Mitt spewed his lies – that’s more applicable.

Taliban ready to start peace talks with Afghanistan
    Lillian Rizzo| January 12, 2012 11:27

The Taliban says it is ready to enter peace talks to end the war in Afghanistan, even though their insurgents still plan to carry on fighting, the Associated Press reported. The militant organization announced the peace talks on Thursday in an emailed statement, suggesting they are ready for peace talks, but still pointing out obstacles on the way to any sort of settlement, especially their insistence that President Hamid Karzai’s government is a “stooge” of the West, the AP reported.

Iran agrees to discuss nuclear bomb allegations with the IAEA
    News Desk| January 12, 2012 15:30

Diplomats in Vienna are reporting today that Iranian officiuals have agreed to meet a UN nuclear agency team in Tehran to discuss allegations that the Islamic Republic has for years engaged in a secret program to build a bomb, according to The Associated Press.

Such a move would represent a reversal of Iran’s position of more than three years during which it refused to cooperate with UN attempts to verify US allegations. The news comes amid rising tensions between Iran and Western countries seeking to impose punitive sanctions targeting the nation’s crucial oil industry in reaction to its alleged attempts to build nuclear weapons.

I don’t agree that he had a horrible week. He won the first primary after tying the first caucus. Most people don’t hear about these web ads that we share here. The average person gets their news from network tv not cable. Therefore all they know is that he was a winner. So it would make sense to me that he would be getting a bump nationally against the not-romney’s

My favorite part about the GOP congressional clusterf**kers trying to sue over this recess appointment: They seemingly have no idea what they are up against. President Obama is a brilliant man who KNOWS what the Constitution will allow in the way of recess appointments– he taught Constitutional Law, and you know, unlike our do-nothing GOP congress–actually thinks before acting, and knew exactly what he was doing.

I LOVE having a good AND smart president. <3

I really haven't read through all of the posts on this blog, having just discovered this recently. As a result, I am hesitant to share any found links of interest as they are likely something that has been mentioned around here already. However, if this doesn't sound familiar, I would be happy to dig up the link I recently happened upon. It is for an amazing Daily Kos Diary that argues the case that so many are afraid to argue: that Obama is quite possibly the best President of all time. Have any of you read this piece? It excites me to see that many of us non-disappointed supporters are still out there :)

No real need to apologize. Others here mentioned that diary also. It’s just that dkos is on the bad list for too much anti-Obama. But in rare instances there is an exception and someone will note a brave soul posting something positive there.

    • January 12, 2012 at 5:35 pm

Benchwarmer – someone did refer people to that diary a few days ago, and they may have also provided a link (not exactly following the rules, but it was such a positive diary, that I think it warranted the exception). It really was a heartwarming diary, and the comments were generally positive, too. It’s been a cesspool over at d-kos, but a few people seem to be coming back to their senses and there have been one or two good diaries referenced these past few weeks.

    Wednesday, January 11, 2012 | Posted by Deaniac83 at 1:43 PM

With a director now in place, America’s first ever agency to solely have as its purpose the protection of consumers sprung into action. Their first non-bank target: the mortgage industry. Today, they released an examination procedure to subject non-bank entities associated with a mortgage process – brokers, non-bank lenders (ahem Countrywide before being bought by BofA ahem) and servicers – to the same level of scrutiny the agency has already been providing for bank lenders, ending the area of the mortgage market where the sun don’t shine.

Republicans Argue That Corporations Should Be Allowed To Sponsor Candidates

The popularity of NASCAR has exposed most Americans to photographs of drivers in silly jumpsuits festooned with myriad patches of their sponsors’ logos. The drivers’ uniforms rival their race cars for corporate advertisements and in combination, the drivers and their machines are eerily similar to a clown and his little pretend car people attending a circus recognize. If Republicans have their way, it will not be long before candidates appear in debates and on the campaign trail wearing jumpsuits with their corporate sponsors’ logos, and unlike NASCAR drivers and their cars, the GOP clowns will not engender derisive laughter, but fear and desperation as America’s elections, democracy, and government are sold to the highest spending corporation. Willard Romney and the Supreme Court claim corporations are people, but if the RNC prevails, corporations will have more influence on elections than millions of people.

The Citizens United decision the conservative Supreme Court handed down gives corporations the right of free speech to spend unlimited funds to run political ads or use other media modalities to influence elections in their favor. Corporations are still forbidden from contributing directly to a candidate or a committee (such as the Republican National Committee {RNC}), and it is the last line of defense to prevent corporate ownership of a candidate. In a brief filed on Monday in the 4TH Circuit, the RNC argued it is unconstitutional to deny direct corporate sponsorship of a candidate or committee because they claim the ban applies “across the board to all corporations,” regardless of size.

The RNC argues that most corporations are not giant entities that seek to influence elections and that most corporations are little more than mom and pop operations typical of small shops in any American neighborhood. However, the brief points out that the prohibition on corporate giants such as Halliburton unfairly targets little family shops and therefore is unconstitutional. If the court agrees with the RNC’s argument, there will be no distinction between Uncle Paul and Aunt Irene’s craft store and Koch Industries or General Electric. The Republicans are not challenging the prohibition on direct corporate financing for family-owned markets, but for giant corporations with unlimited amounts of cash

I hope the general public remembers that they had agreed to this backwards process where they’ll vote against increasing debt ceiling, but the President will override them, or something like that. It’s a way to claim they voted against increasing the debt, even though they know it has to happen. They just want to have time to complain and grandstand on the House floor.

Obama Mobilizes Supporters To Battle GOP’s Voter Suppression Campaign

President Obama continues to raise huge sums of money, but he is also mobilizing supporters to do battle against the GOP’s 2012 voter suppression campaign…

Obama’s fundraising numbers are going to continue to be mind boggling, but 2012 won’t be about money. The big story is going to be how the Obama campaign spends the money that they raise to overcome Republican efforts to keep his supporters from voting in 2012. The Obama campaign is planning on spending huge sums of their money on grassroots efforts to overcome the GOP campaign to suppress the vote.

The 2012 election will be less about Barack Obama versus the Republican nominee and more about Democrats versus the voter suppression tactics of the Republican Party. The outcome of the battle to make sure that Obama supporters can still vote for their candidate may determine the outcome of the 2012 election.

Vice President Joe Biden largely steered clear of politics as he talked college affordability at Gahanna Lincoln High School, telling an overflow crowd that the Obama administration wanted to “ restore the bargain that’s been broken” on keeping costs down.

Accompanied by U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan in a town hall-style meeting attended by about 775 high school juniors, seniors, parents and dignitaries inside the school’s gymnasium , and another few hundred in the school’s auditorium watching on a projection screen, Biden decried the strain rising college costs puts on parents, arguing that the added expenses are robbing them “of the American Dream” of putting their children in a position to do better than they did

i was in a clinic waiting room this morning, stuck in front of a tv spewing fox ‘news’–horrid and i couldn’t get the channel to change. but, as a result, i heard the announcement that on hand-drying machines in public restrooms around america, the romney campaign has plastered stickers that say, ‘push button for a message from the president’. the ‘news’ announcer (smug blonde helmet) said, ‘get it?’.

i don’t know if any of you have seen these, but i think we should remove them whenever possible. i was in two airports last week, and none were there, but this is hawaii. it’s this kind of insidious, inside joke messaging that undermines the public’s respect for the president’s word, and his work.

“The Obama filing was unquestionably impressive,” said Jonathan Mantz, who led the fundraising efforts of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s 2008 presidential bid. “The fourth quarter is never an easy fundraising quarter, especially during these past few months when the political spotlight has been on the Republican presidential candidates.”

What that fundraising disparity means is that Obama will be able to set the terms — or at least take a first crack at setting the terms — of the general election.

But when will it make sense for Obama to start spending all that money?

Conversations with a variety of Democrats, media gurus and party strategists produced a widespread consensus that Obama should not begin spending freely on paid television advertising until the Republican attacks on Romney slow.

“I think he waits until the GOP guns against Mitt stop firing,” Democratic pollster Paul Maslin said. “And even then he can wait a while longer.”
