M4Obama thanks for the remainder we will watch it and by the way The Sullivan Interview was just
fantastic I always thought Andrew will support PBO from the get go yes sometimes he critisises PBO
but it’s O.K and I notice people get very upset, we just have to learn to calm down. PBO is going to
get a lot of garbage from the right and the left , we just need to push back. We must concentrate our
work on the graund just like 2008.

He was right on. Something he said disturbed me. He can’t get Obama’s Chicago office to mount enthusiastic defense or even brag as he did. What the hell’s up with that? Some here might have access to top Chicago people, could somebody point that out loud and clear? Missed oportunities like that really piss me off. The election will be close and we can’t afford leave money on the table. I said this and I will say it again, brag, man, brag!

AN INDICTMENT OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AND THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA

Andrew Sullivan’s Newsweek article and his appearance on Hardball are an indictment of the GOP and the msm media. Just listen to what Mitt Romney said at the beginning of the video. Then listen to what Andrew Sullivan said. Nothing that Romney said is true. It just makes Mitt Romney sound completely out of touch with reality and dishonest. And it shines a light on the MSM who have abdicated their responsibility TO TELL THE TRUTH AND LET THE CHIPS FALL WHERE THEY MAY. Andrew’s article should be the norm not the exception.

From Pew Research Center’s Project For Excellence in Journalism:

    1. Journalism’s first obligation is to the truth

Democracy depends on citizens having reliable, accurate facts put in a meaningful context. Journalism does not pursue truth in an absolute or philosophical sense, but it can–and must–pursue it in a practical sense. This “journalistic truth” is a process that begins with the professional discipline of assembling and verifying facts. Then journalists try to convey a fair and reliable account of their meaning, valid for now, subject to further investigation. Journalists should be as transparent as possible about sources and methods so audiences can make their own assessment of the information. Even in a world of expanding voices, accuracy is the foundation upon which everything else is built–context, interpretation, comment, criticism, analysis and debate. The truth, over time, emerges from this forum. As citizens encounter an ever greater flow of data, they have more need–not less–for identifiable sources dedicated to verifying that information and putting it in context.

    Checkout more principles here……

Big issue! I hope their is something there!

    • January 16, 2012 at 8:48 pm

I’ll be gobsmacked if it’s isn’t completely clean. I’m just glad GOP primary challengers will be the ones to fall into his big “gotcha” trap.

        January 16, 2012 at 8:54 pm

I think it’s the lower tax rate that’s the issue.

        • January 16, 2012 at 9:02 pm

Maybe I give him too much credit, but he ran for Mass Gov with his eyes on the Presidency – he’s been running for President for 15 years at least, I have to imagine he knew the taxes would have to be publicized and would have paid higher tax rate as a result.

How far back does the taxes released usually go?

      • January 16, 2012 at 8:56 pm

He is probably paying less than his secretary. Good fodder!

      • January 16, 2012 at 9:04 pm

what’s important is how much her earned and what he’s given to and tax rate.

      • January 16, 2012 at 9:17 pm

Unlike you, I think ittens tax records have many stink bombs like taking advantage of all the loopholes, tax haven etc. Whether that will upset LIV’s aka indies is another thing..

        January 16, 2012 at 10:05 pm

I’m pretty sure he has closed all his foreign accounts this year because he seeked the presidency. I would love to see his tax returns of the past few years, not just this one…

I’ll bet that this year he’s asked his accountants to limit the use of deductions so it won’t look so bad. But tricks won’t work. Too many knowledgeable people will scrutinize everything if he releases the documents.

No way to escape, Mr. Romney…

Santorum may indeed have won the Iowa caucus. If that is true then Romney will not be the first ever to win both Iowa and New Hampshire.

    http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/updates/4125

  17. January 16, 2012 at 9:00 pm

Well, it seems like Mittens may not have won Iowa. From TPM:

Rick Santorum may have won Iowa and in ongoing counting holds an 80 vote lead over Mitt Romney, Byron York reports:

The final numbers will be different from those released on caucus night. One campaign source says the vote count as of midday Monday showed Santorum ahead by 80-something votes. If that number holds through certification of the last precincts, Santorum will win. Of course, there is always the possibility that some of the final precincts will contain discrepancies that put Romney back on top. It’s just not clear.

Attention TOD’ers — Rhoda is down with PBO!

On hand to say happy birthday during the taping of the Betty White 90th Birthday Special, Ms. White’s Mary Tyler Moore Show co-star, Valerie Harper was asked by an interviewer if she had a new years resolution for 2012 (starts at 1:27 in this video):

    http://www.examiner.com/sitcom-in-los-angeles/valerie-harper-video

“Yes! I wanna do all I can to support our President. I’m so sick of the criticism of him. And then I turn to people and say “What did you do in terms of the 2010… , did you even vote?… to have a congress that he could work with instead of people with this idealogy that is so… I’m sorry I feel that a lot of it is race-based…and he is brilliant… And people say well, he’s made a lot of mistakes… He’s a human being, he’s gonna make mistakes. I just want us to be the wind in his sails. He’s not a king, he has to deal with those judges, and he has to deal with congress. So my resolution is to move the ball down the field for all Americans to have a better shot. And I do think that’s in our President’s heart and he needs more support behind him to get that done. That’s a resolution.”

Bush tax cuts helped the rich get richer
By Editorial Board, Monday, January 16, 7:35 PM

WHILE FEW QUESTION the fact that income inequality has risen in the United States over the past three decades, there is plenty of dispute about why. Some argue that the upward shift in after-tax income reflects a high-tech society’s increasing rewards to highly skilled workers, or the rise of super-paid “superstars” in everything from finance to sports, or the decline of labor unions and the minimum wage.

Another concern is that the lighter federal taxation of capital gains and other investment income relative to ordinary income has skewed income distribution upward. This is related to the so-called “Buffett Rule,” whereby the Omaha billionaire (and former Washington Post Co. board member) Warren Buffett pays income tax at a lower effective rate than his secretary does, largely because so much of his income comes from investments.

evening TOD – I need some help if you please. So, I was entering data tonight at the OFA office and one of the young guys gets a person on the phone who is sort of ambivalent about PBO because she sites “monsanto”. We got to talking about it and I looked it up a little bit but I’m kind of like – what’s a good counter or talking point that I could steer the conversation away from that? Anybody? thanks

    • January 16, 2012 at 11:35 pm

Monsanto seems to me to be one of PBO’s blind spots. He could not have won the Iowa caucuses in 2008 w/o Tom Vilsack. Tom Vilsack is all about Monsanto. He is the one person on the Cabinet that I dislike intensely. That’s one of those things that is just pure politics. Hate to say it, a4alice, but there’s no way to speak well about this. Take the hit for the team. Ask the person what they would like to see done about it and encourage them to write to the President and get their friends to write to the President. Get people to put up a petition on whitehouse.gov and try to get enough signatures to bring attention to the problem.

I don’t know, alice…I saw your question earlier, and thought someone more knowledgeable about this would respond. She was talking about genetically engineered corn or something? What was her issue with Monsanto? And if you think about that….its nuts on its face.Does she actually think that voting for ANYONE ELSE is going to address her issues, care WHAT she says, or won’t double down on whatever it is that is bothering her now? CORPORATIONS ARE PEOPLE, MY FRIEND!!! Ask her if Romney makes her feel better! And ten ask her to write into the WH with her concerns.

I don’t mean to be flip, but these things make me nuts. One issue, and ignore EVERYTHING ELSE???? WTH?!

thanks guys for answering my question – I was kind of at a loss. DF we drew the same conclusion. But of course. I can’t really say that there. But Tien I think that is probably the best course. Put it back to them “what would they like to see done” encourage them to act and get them re-involved.

Listen…I know we had our issues with the Hilary folks in 08…but no doubt about it, Senator Obama grew into President Obama as a result of Hillary and the Clinton machine (I think the prez would even agree on this point). I say this to say that Romney is by far the most unprepared candidate to EVER get (let’s be honest—it’s over) the nomination. Ron Paul had to correct him on the difference between Al Qaeda and the Taliban, he is unbelievable thin skinned…and his knowledge is about a mile wide and an inch deep. Newt may be a BS artist extraordinaire but he knows history (whether that history is factual or not is beside the point :) ).

Hell, even Halperin gave Newt an A and Romney a B.

    • January 16, 2012 at 11:19 pm

I don’t think it’s accurate to say “senator Obama grew into president Obama as a result of…….the Clinton machine.” —- I think you meant to say his debating skills got better after spending time during the campaign fending off the nasty shit the Clinton’s were throwing at him. What makes president Obama president Obama, has nothing to do with the Clinton’s. The seeds of great men are sown long before the storm and turbulence. The Clinton’s showed a nastiness no one expected, but that he surpassed and overcame. I give Hillary and her horrible husband no credit for making President Obama who he is.

While I get where you are coming from, my point is that people saw Senator Obama take on Senator Clinton and the Clinton machine…mano e mano. No backing down, whether it was the debates or fighting clean or dirty if needed- they did it. For some people, like my father, he said that by Senator Obama not backing down from the Clintons he knew he could wither the Republican onslaught during the General Election. I am in no way taking anything away from Senator and/or President Obama. All I am saying that the entire process made Barack Obama better and allowed some people to gain confidence that he was ready. Again, I get where you are coming from…I just have a different opinion.

    ====================================================

11.05 pm. Frank Luntz just gave us the quote of the night, as explosions – fireworks? – boom around the convention center. “It sounds like Fort Sumter out there.”

    It sure did. All night.

10.58 pm. I’m not sure what to say about this evening, except I want to take a shower. I’ve rarely been repulsed by the atmosphere of a debate as I was tonight. But this is the Republican core of South Carolina. One of the biggest applause lines was about waging war on the federal government. I suspect that if any Latinos or African-Americans were watching this, Obama’s support just jumped.

From my perspective, Romney was cringe-inducing, shudder-worthy, and plastic beyond measure. I suspect he’s going to try and rig this year’s tax returns to hide his far lower rate of taxation and far, far, far higher income than 99.999 percent of the population. It was a weak answer.

Elizabeth Warren Money Bomb Pulls In Over $100,000 In First Weekend
    First Posted: 1/16/12 09:33 AM ET| Updated: 1/16/12 08:29 PM ET

WASHINGTON — Elizabeth Warren’s money bomb has pulled in pledges of more than $100,000 in the course of a weekend, according to the campaign, with four days left until the Senate candidate’s first attempt to raise an explosive amount of money with a one-day haul from small donors. “We already have pledges for more than $100,000 for our first ever money bomb this Thursday,” campaign manager Mindy Myers told HuffPost, “but we have a long way to go to narrow the gap with Brown’s $12.8 million war chest.”

The total is a combination of pledges made at ElizabethWarrenMoneyBomb.com and others that have yet to be reflected on her site.

That’s actually a pretty crummy number. Embarrassing actually. Hopefully folks are waiting until the actual day – the 19th – to donate. Anything less than $1M would be bad news for her.

      • January 16, 2012 at 11:50 pm

$100,000 in ONE weekend is embarrassing?? I know you like to put a negative spin on most Dem-related news, saintroscoe, but this is getting ridiculous. Truly.

        • January 17, 2012 at 12:15 am

It is. We’re talking about a major candidate here who raised 5.7M last quarter – moneybombs for high profile candidates bring in millions. But hey, I’m just being negative again. I always put negative spin on Dem related news. You want to treat 100,000 as some glowing, shiny happy people holding hands success, hey – it’s your place.

I guess this is goodbye. So be it. Ridiculousness is in the eye of the beholder.

          • January 17, 2012 at 12:30 am

The goodbye is entirely up to you, saintroscoe. If that’s your choice, I wish you well.

Last week you raised GOP talking points to downplay PBO’s fundraising total – but, but, but ‘he’ll never reach a billion’.

Who in the Obama campaign ever claimed he would raise a billion?

            No one.

So, you allowed yourself to be sucked in by MSM bull to downplay what was decidedly good news.

To dismiss Elizabeth Warren’s $100,000 ‘money bomb’ on a single weekend as “embarrassing” …. well, that’s something I’d expect to hear from the Scott Brown campaign. You know what she’s up against here, surely?

Is it enough to keep up with Brown’s $$ backing? Of course not. But if you want to sneer at it as “glowing, shiny people holding hands”, then go right ahead. It simply shows you have no clue what Elizabeth Warren is up against.

Maybe you should support her a little more, rather than ridiculing her efforts as “embarrassing’?

Just a “shiny people holding hands” thought.

And when you have the time, watch and listen to this shiny person holding hands with the rest of us:

I second this Chips. This blog is for PRO Obama and PRO Democratic news. I recall last summer when the negativity got so bad, I felt this blog had become a mirror image of HuffyFluffy. And saintroscoe’s continued concern trolling over Jon Huntsman as being “the most dangerous” has struck my last nerve. I told saintroscoe that Huntsman was a snake not to be concerned over, and I was vindicated when Huntsman dropped out and endorsed Willard. We don’t need the concern trolling here, and this post from saintroscoe saying it was “embarrasing” for Warren for raising $100,000 reeks of emoprog/concern trolling and I have had enough of it.

              • January 17, 2012 at 12:52 am

I have no clue whether saintroscoe will be back, that’s up to him/her.

Unlike some here before, I have absolutely no doubt that s/he is a genuine supporter of PBO.

And I always enjoy, hugely, reading saintroscoe’s take on what’s happening politically, s/he is smart and evidently highly informed.

I’ll be disappointed if s/he leaves, but that’s entirely up to him/her.

Yes, I could do without the constant negative spin on evidently encouraging news, but not all of us have a hopeful outlook on things.

                Such is life.

Riiight. I mentioned last week that if it wasn’t released on the Thursday, it would mean it would be bad news. And it was released on the Thursday. I wasn’t sucked in by anything – the fact of the matter is that $1B is out there, and was concern enough to Jim Messina to rebut it. It doesn’t matter if the campaign said it or not if it’s a prevailing thought that is passed around every time Pres. Obama’s fundraising numbers are brought up – it’s something they’re facing.

Funny that you mention I should support Elizabeth Warren more, as I’m one of the few that even bother to bring her up here – I understand though, because it’s an Obama blog. But I have no clue about what she is facing – or maybe I have a clue to understand $100,000 over a weekend isn’t something to brag about as a campaign in Massachusetts when Scott Brown has a $12M war chest.

I’m glad this is finally all out in the open. I had a feeling your “house rules” posts the last week or so was – in part – in my direction. I just wish you would have just banned me and saved us both the hassle.

So it’s not entirely up to me – you’ve made your feelings perfectly clear. I’m sure you just made the day of a lot of folks here anyways

“Funny that you mention I should support Elizabeth Warren more, as I’m one of the few that even bother to bring her up here – I understand though, because it’s an Obama blog.”

Well, that says it all really, doesn’t it?

Yep, saintroscoe, there’s really no deceit or mystery: it’s called The Obama Diary, after all.

PS Way more people than you have brought up Warren, maybe you just never got around to reading their comments?

    The Triggers of Economic Inequality
By Troy Oxford and Lauren Feeney| January 15, 2012

In recent years, the rich have seen their wealth grow dramatically while the poor and middle class have basically flatlined. It’s no accident, argue Jacob Hacker and Paul Pierson in their book Winner-Take-All Politics. The infographic below, which draws from Hacker and Pierson’s book, explains how our politicians — on both sides of the isle — fell under the spell of corporate dollars and re-engineered our economic system to favor the wealthy. The dark green line shows the income trajectory for the top 1 percent since 1970, while the light green line shows the bottom 90 percent. Click the orange triangles to learn about critical turning points that helped create the skewed system we have today.

OFA group report from the arctic west (could someone please turn up the heat?) We participated in local MLK activities today, collected a nice handful of “I’m In” cards and tried to lend a hand during a service activity, we were turned away because so MANY people showed up they didn’t need any more volunteers. Tonight we had a phone bank, which resulted in just under ninety positive conversations with voters. We played and replayed the Lift Every Voice and Sing video for inspiration, it inspired and caused quite a few teary eyes. Happy MLK day everyone.

Obama Elevates Small Business Administration To Cabinet-Level Position |
By Alex Seitz-Wald on Jan 13, 2012 at 2:20 pm

President Obama announced today that he will elevate the U.S. Small Business Administration to a cabinet-level position in an effort to boost small businesses and streamline the government. The move is part of Obama’s effort to combine combine six government offices into a single, streamlined agency. The SBA promotion is effective immediately, as Obama used his executive authority to make the change, while the larger effort will need approval from Congress.

GOP Debate Audience Applauds Perry’s Call For Romney To Release Tax Returns
By Alex Seitz-Wald on Jan 16, 2012 at 9:38 pm

GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney has so far refused to release his income tax returns, as is customary for presidential candidates of both parties. Rommey said that he has no plans to do so, even if he wins the nomination.

During tonight’s Fox News debate in South Carolina, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) reiterated his call for Romney to release his tax returns, eliciting a boisterous applause from the audience. “Mitt, we need for you to release your income tax so the people of this country can see how you made your money,” Perry said. “We cannot fire out nominee in September, we need to know now.”

American Automakers Plan To Hire Thousands Of Workers In 2012 |
By Travis Waldron on Jan 13, 2012 at 1:05 pm

American automakers plan to hire thousands of workers in 2012 as sales continue to rebound, yet another sign that President Obama’s rescue of the auto industry has been successful. Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler announced that they would add a total of 6,000 factory workers in Michigan, Kentucky, and Illinois, and total payrolls at American auto plants could reach 650,000 this year. Two years after the auto industry rescue, American car companies gained market share for the first time in two decades, and analysts expect the third consecutive year of gains in the industry. With economic uncertainty plaguing Europe and parts of Asia, meanwhile, the U.S. has become a safe haven for foreign car companies as well — German and Japanese companies are both planning to hire more American workers.

On MLK Day, Santorum Criticizes Romney For Undermining Voting Rights
By Faiz Shakir on Jan 16, 2012 at 10:10 pm

A Romney-affiliated Super PAC is currently airing an attack ad in South Carolina which falsely suggests that Rick Santorum supports allowing felons in prison to vote. Tonight, Santorum confronted Romney about the ad, stating that his record and his view that felons who have served their time and completed their probation and parole should have their right to vote restored. Santorum then pressed Romney whether he also believes people who have served their time should be allowed to vote, explaining the importance of the issue:

Romney tried to dodge the issue, finally stating, “I don’t think people who have committed violent crimes should be allowed to vote again.” Santorum pushed back, correctly noting that while Romney was governor of Massachusetts, the state employed a policy of allowing violent felons to vote not only after they completed their sentence but also while they were on probation.

Again—-Colbert—genius. His new ad, which ran during the debate tonight, asks his supporters to vote for Herman Cain. See, Colbert can’t get on the ballot because of a technicality—-he’s 2 1/2 months late for filing :)—–and S.C. doesn’t allow write-ins. BUT Cain’s name is on the ballot, and any and all can vote in the Repub primary—-Dems, independents, college students—–and so Colbert is asking those who are interested in his candidacy——-and all the truths he’s bringing to light——to vote for Cain/Colbert.

I think so…i believe it came on before tonight’s debate. I don’t know the context (got it off a website)…but I found it utterly fascinating. Who knew Bill O knew his rappers? And bernie was so adamant it was Ice T…

okay, ( Not that that makes Bill O “down with the brothers” ) Was there any point to it? In what context was it shown. I’m so tired of the “rappers, food stamps and welfare” description of black people. sigh….

            January 17, 2012 at 12:51 am

Is there ever a point to Bill O’s blatherings? LOL…No, earlier I posted a comment a black reporter on FOX made. She said that back in her hood…they would have characterized the debate as “being on like Donkey Kong”. Let’s put aside the fact that no one has used that kind of language in 2 decades…but the only hood this lady ever saw was Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood. To me, FOX is just so far removed from the reality of black people its not even funny. As with this clip….it seems their only knowledge of black people comes from BET,
