The White House released a statement saying, “The three men enjoyed a personal visit in the Oval Office – as they have done on previous occasions when President Bush is Washington.”

The Bushes are in town to attend the exclusive Alfalfa Club dinner Saturday, an annual get-together for Washington power brokers that Obama also is scheduled to attend.

7:15 PM: PBO delivers remarks at the 99th annual Alfalfa Club Dinner in Washington. Michelle Obama attends.

USA Today: Republicans were quick to rebuke the Obama administration after a third clean-energy company to receive taxpayer dollars, Ener1, filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this week.

But absent from their critique of Ener1 — which was awarded a $118.5 million grant from the Department of Energy in 2009 to expand an Indianapolis manufacturing plant — has been any mention that the electric battery manufacturer was also championed by one of the GOP’s rising stars, Gov. Mitch Daniels.

Ta-Nehisi Coates (The Atlantic): All parties agree that Ron Paul is not, personally, racist and that he didn’t write the (newsletters) passages …. As I’ve said before, we all must make our calculus in supporting a candidate or even claiming he is “good” for the debate. But it must be an honest calculus.

If you believe that a character who would conspire to profit off of white supremacy, anti-gay bigotry, and anti-Semitism is the best vehicle for convincing the country to end the drug war, to end our romance with interventionism, to encourage serious scrutiny of state violence, at every level, then you should be honest enough to defend that proposition.

What you should not do is claim that Ron Paul “legislated” for Martin Luther King Day, or claim to have intricate knowledge of Ron Paul’s heart, and thus by the harsh accumulation of evidence, be made to look ridiculous.

I probably should have put this is the #1 reason :-)

Very generous and empathetic of our President to spend time with the obviously ailing former President Bush.

ARRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Chips what are you trying to do to me? The thing that freaks me out about Romney is that no matter what expression is on his visage, his eyes are empty. It’s as though he has no soul. When he smiles, when he grins, when’s he’s angry, when he stares, his eyes are bloody empty. That’s not human. The eyes as they say are the window to one’s soul and they are the essence of non-verbal language. Romney doesn’t communicate anything but emptiness with his eyes. It’s too darned unnerving. If I ever saw that same character deficiency in a Democrat, I’d be very very very leery of said Democrat.

I agree Bobfr is a terrific twitterer (new word – I’m feeling creative  ) but Chips Chica, I do believe your memory is slipping! I`m pretty sure Bob is married. Wasn’t it you and UTALib (or was it Lisa?) who had a …a..ahm.. confrontation sometime ago for which Bob was a focus, and which had ‘the poor man’ -ing? If MY memory serves, at the time Bob declared his undying love for his wife while  -ing furiously at the ruckus you gals were making. Don’t you remember? ;)

            • January 27, 2012 at 11:25 pm

But I kinda hoped his 42-year marriage was just a temporary thing, a fleeting moment in time.

Oh crikey VC, my mother is waaaaaaaaaaaay worse than me.

And she remains incensed with PBO – for running down Air Force One’s steps without holding on to the rails.

I can’t begin to describe how nervous it makes her, if he declared war on Iran – or even Ireland – tomorrow she wouldn’t be any more upset.

I showed her one of my videos – can’t remember which one (Australia? Ireland?) – and she loved it ….. until: the running down the steps moment:

                  “Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesus!!!!!! He’ll fall,” she howled.

So I never, ever, EVER show her pics like this:

vcprezofan2, I think Chips might have thought Bob was like Newt. You know the guy who don’t know what being faithful is, the guy who divorce wife one as she lay on hospital bed suffering from cancer, then the second wife he left number one for, he cheated on her for number three, and if Newt wasn’t to darn old number three better be looking out. Yet when I read everything BEFORE participating, I find I’m still way out in left field. Oh well, remembering the ‘fight’ that ensued between Chips and UTALib while I was writing about it brought smiles to my heart, so I don’t mind (only a little bit) finding out that my comment was totally irrelevant.

Caught some of Piers Morgan tonight and as usual he asked the inevitable “What do you think of President Obama?” question. His guest was Seal; the musician. Seal said he was very proud that PBO was elected as POTUS, that this is the only country in the world where such a huge paradigm event can occur. That he was proud that we could go from such a hard right GWB administration (the way he said GWB administration with such disdain in his voice was hilarious) to an administration spear headed by a man called Barack Obama. He also said that another reason he is proud of having PBO as President is because after GWB, this nation wasn’t in need of another “great” President, we were in need of a GREAT leader and PBO has NEVER wavered. Shut Piers up lightning fast.

    January 27, 2012 at 10:02 pm

Question!! Do any of you think we should be giving input to PBO and the WH about who we would like to see sit as SOS, TS, VP? Seems our Rev Al agrees with a caller on his radio program today, that we should plug our concerns of who fills those seats come a 2nd Obama administration. I’m sorry, but I think they’d better leave well enough alone when it comes to VP Biden. Also, since when do we tell the President who he should hire? Who of us would allow someone to tell us who to hire on our jobs, in our companies, our house sitters, baby sitters, dog sitters…..well, you all get my drift. I have been really ticked with too many folk this week, and I add Rev Al to that bunch right now. Balls too fuckin big, IMO.

      January 27, 2012 at 10:22 pm

I agree EDP4BHO. My VP Biden is just fine where he is. No changes needed there.

SOS – Whoever the President deems fit.
TS – Whoever the President deems fit.

    • January 27, 2012 at 10:39 pm

Rev. Al should tell these callers that if they want input into who the President appoints then they better give him the majorities in Congress to be able to do so OR the majorities needed so that their dream team can actually accomplish their goals.
They can express their opinions but the decision is Pres.Obama’s.

I don’t know why there’s so much talk about wanting to replace Joe Biden. Clinton and Geithner have both said outright that they don’t plan or expect to return.

Maybe now that Hillary has said she wants out of politics, the talk about replacing Biden with her at VP will shut down for a minute.

Well, I’m not forgetting what Bill Maher has been doing. I haven’t watched his show in over a year, and – finally – I got rid of HBO and told my cable company to take down the reason why (since they keep those records). Now, of course, there’s all kinds of other stuff coming up on HBO that I’d like to see, so I’ll have to subscribe to it again, soon. But at least I made my tiny point.

      • January 27, 2012 at 11:08 pm

I did the same thing jb. :) That damn Maher was pissing me off with his criticism of POTUS while POTUS was working every waking minute trying to get the country out of every disaster known to man; financial meltdown, massive unemployment, massive stupid wars, al Qaeda military dead end; Middle East revolutions affecting the rest of the world, bad view of America based on our meddling in their countries and torture program, oil spill, democrats screwing up Mass election and 2010 election and on and on. I’m still pissed at him.

I’m glad to see the Bushes respectfully visiting with Pres. Obama but will never forget it was those two who helped rig the 2000 Florida results that night with Jeb as Gov and Bush Sr calling his buddies at Fox that brought it to the Supreme Court. Absolutely right Bobfr. And it’s not that hard to do but they choose to be horses asses. POTUS spoke about the military working as a team and having each other’s back. And for most of us, we do that every day at work; Democrats working with Republicans side by side to get the job done with mutual respect. He nailed it on the one sentence he was allowed to say. Dana Rohrbacher disgustingly hogged the whole thing with his loony tunes, and some girl whom I’ve never seen or heard of kept smugly chirping away with utter nonsense. Bashir couldn’t get a word in edgewise, and Maher lost control of his show—should have made sure Bashir got to say 2 sentences at least. The only worthy segment of the show was Maher’s wrap-up—–where he made clear the utter absurdity of all the freaky fakey identities the Repubs try to hang on President Obama—-all the Alinsky nonsense, the European socialist, the guy who’s coming to get your guns, the Kenyan, the muslim etc. etc.—–a completely made up identity—–they’re fighting against a fictional person who does not exist.

We really went after him on Twitter and he said “Tomorrow you’ll read the newspaper and I’ll accept your apology”. Well, it’s been three days since and I still wait for him to admit how wrong he was. Such a shame. He wasn’t like that.

    • 146 hopefruit2
      January 27, 2012 at 10:40 pm

Yes I remembered very well, especially the nasty “apology” comment. He was downright arrogant and condescending. And it’s not surprising that he has slinked into silence and not admitted to being wrong and presumptuous. Right now it appears that deal is not all that “sweet” in fact it appears rather SOUR – for the banks, that is.

    • January 27, 2012 at 10:41 pm

Saw that BWD, and the Twitter push-back, having had endless admiration for Van Jones the guy has proved to be a major disappointment. I know it’s the ultimate insult, but sometimes he seems almost Dan-****ing-Choi-ish to me, desperate for Firebagger admiration and embarrassingly comical with his “I heard a rumor that PBO is going to……” crap. I honestly reckon his sole ambition now is to be part of the Greenwald/Hamsher club. I have no time for the guy any more. None.

      • January 27, 2012 at 10:50 pm

It’s a real shame, because unlike that lunatic Choi, he is very intelligent and his heart totally in the right place. He’s charismatic and can be someone really important and meaningful. Really haz me is real sad.

        • January 27, 2012 at 10:54 pm

Exactly, he’s a smart man – or used to be – I have no clue why he’s taken this direction. Ego? Maybe. That article just looked like the usual Firebagger crap to me. A major disappointment.

    • January 27, 2012 at 10:45 pm

I don’t go to HuffPO but I did see some of you telling him off on twitter. I don’t pay Van Jones any mind anymore. I don’t even think about him until someone in time line mentions him. He clearly isn’t the leader I thought he was as I see he can be easily led by the emo crowd.

Hopefully he’ll learn not to brag until the deal is on paper for all to see.

    • January 27, 2012 at 10:47 pm

The 20 billion dollar deal will not go through anyways, because al AG has to be on board, and they are not!

    • January 27, 2012 at 10:47 pm

I noticed his profile on Twitter makes no mention of Obama or winning 2012 election. He’s a snake imho.

    • 158 anniebella
      January 27, 2012 at 11:18 pm

What has happen to Van Jones? Has his success gone to his big head?

    • 159 Sandy1110
      January 28, 2012 at 3:36 am

The Firebagger nutters on one blog went into their usual hysterics over it: Blah blah blah about how POTUS is going to cut a deal with the banks, they wouldn’t support him any longer if he did that (as if they ever did), and so on and so on.

  19. January 27, 2012 at 10:38 pm

Attorney General Eric Holder officially unveiled a task force, led by New York’s crusading state attorney general Eric Schneiderman, to determine whether banks and financial institutions committed fraud when they bundled home mortgages and sold them on the international securities market – transactions that triggered the collapse of the housing market and led to the economic meltdown three years ago.

Flanked by Housing Secretary Shaun Donovan and Schneiderman, Holder told reportes Friday at a Justice Department press conference that the task force, called the Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities Working Group, will hold lenders and securities brokers accountable for an era of shortcuts, rule-bending and irresponsibility that left millions of homeowners in financial distress. The group will also coordinate ongoing probes into residential mortgage-backed securities fraud, moves that can accelerate help to homeowners, restore public confidence in Wall Street and hold the banking industry accountable, Holder said.

The modern day Republican rabble needs to take a good look at the picture at the top of this thread and see how adults act…notice the civility, the smiles, even the posture of these three people…..no antagonism here, just good will. I’m talking to you Jan Brewer, Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Eric Cantor, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney, and so many more. GROW UP!!!! You all act like two year olds throwing a tantrum…….we, the country are tired of it, and you are not going to be rewarded in November.

Would be sorta fun, and a big cash flow opportunity to lower our deficit, if President Obama announced on the night of his re-election that he’d happily sign legislation making weed legal and the US Government the provider of the best stuff, evah :)

Totally agree. HUGE, HUGE respect for Cory Booker. He’s also down in the trenches with a relentless “can do” attitude trying to do all that he can for the citizens of his city.

It’s just a tiny thing, but once I saw a tweet to Mayor Booker from a constituent asking him how to get in touch about some situation – like trash pickup or something. He tweeted back the contact phone number, I think within minutes.

What Mayor does that? (I’m sure there are many Mayors who are just as empathetic and compassionate, but maybe they’re just not as in “full view” as Cory Booker!)

Hey TOD twitterers. Question: On the old twitter, when you clicked on the human icon and blocked/reported a troll for spam, their tweet would disappear fom your timeline and @ mentions. But on this new twitter, when I do the same thing, the troll is blocked, but the tweet still remains. Is that the same for everyone else or is there some new fangled method?

    • January 27, 2012 at 10:50 pm

No idea on blocking spammers. The only person I’ve blocked is the snide sick dumb Mark Halperin.

I just found Charlie Rose on PBS and he had Dick Halperin on. How can anybody have him on their show when he made that disrespectful comment about the President?

    • January 28, 2012 at 12:05 am

UTALib, I think the tweet will disappear after you sign off. In other words this person’s tweets won’t show the next time you sign on. At least, that’s what happened to mine last time I blocked someone. I was upset at first that the blocking didn’t seem to be working even though when I rechecked the box it said the person WAS blocked, but he/she disappeared after I signed off.

First, the Democrats went after Mitt Romney over Ampad, the Indiana firm where Bain Capital was involved in mass layoffs. Then, they targeted Dade Behring, a medical supply company that failed under Bain’s management.

Now, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is lashing Romney for having served on the board of Damon Corp., a medical testing company involved in Medicare fraud.

She opens a new front in the Democratic messaging offensive in a memo shared with POLITICO:

    Received on FB:

A stranger was seated next to a little black girl on the airplane when the stranger turned to her and said, “Let’s talk. I’ve heard that flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.” The little girl, who had just opened her coloring book, closed it slowly and said to the stranger, “What would you like to talk about?” “Oh, I don’t know,” said the s…tranger. “Since you are an Afro American, do you think that So-called President Barack Obama is qualified for the job?” and he smiles. “OK”, she said. ‘That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff -grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?” The stranger, visibly surprised by the little girl’s intelligence, thinks about it and says, “Hmmm, I have no idea.” To which the little girl replies, “Do you really feel qualified to discuss President Barack Obama…when you don’t know shit?”

Questions: Why can’t the Canadians build their own refinery and take that toxic sludge and turn it into fuel and then export it their own damn selves? Why do they have to transport it to the Gulf first?

    • 200 jacquelineoboomer
      January 28, 2012 at 1:52 am

Don’t have the answer and it’s an interesting question to raise, but aren’t these ideas coming from corporations, rather than all of the people of Canada? They’re probably not into group-think any more than we Americans are. Maybe somebody from Canada can enlighten us on how this is trending there as a plan.

    • January 28, 2012 at 2:12 am

Hey – I’m Canadian! Probably for the same reason that a lot of American companies complete parts of their manufacturing processes in low tax areas – makes business sense and much cheaper labour – like pharmaceutical companies or Apple products produced in China, at the expense of the health and well-being of the citizens there?

‘Grandmother test’ is a good guideline

I am certain some of you have been following the campaigns of those seeking the presidential nomination for the Grand Old Party (GOP). I have paid close attention to the speeches, advertisements and in particular, the debates. The candidates’ misinformation and their downright lies have been bothersome. I have even considered moving to the Dominican Republic if one of these characters becomes president. Though we have been told that politics is downright dirty, men of honor and integrity always look for honesty and sincerity.

This is not a political column. However, the impetus for today’s column is this election period. Providing misinformation is not exclusive to the world of politics. Unfortunately, not telling the truth or providing an unsubstantiated slant on issues exists in all facets of life. In listening to what spills out of the mouths of so-called learned men who hold and have held responsible state, federal and private sector positions, I have asked myself, “Do these people have no shame?” This is a question that you expect one would ask, particularly if they recall when one was guided by the impact of our behavior on ourselves and our families. A guiding principle in the development of responsible men and women back in the day was not embarrassing ourselves and those who mattered to us.

My generation was instilled with the fundamental belief that what we said, how we behaved and how we presented ourselves had to be in keeping with standards of sound family values. This was non-negotiable! Our ancestors demanded that we not only look the part, but that we also act the part. So, what did this really mean? One of my colleagues placed this in perspective when he told me that the determinant as to whether or not one is unashamed is defined by “the grandmother test.” This test requires that you not say or do anything that would be unacceptable to your grandmother. How important is this to young people today? Clearly, in far too many quarters, being embarrassed is of little or no importance in comparison to expected standards of back in the day.

theo67 I don’t know if you will spot this little note or not, but I thought your remarks back on the last topic were so good–talking about the President dealing with the issue of race. I read somewhere a report from a women who was visiting President Obama’s mother when PBO was a kid. They were walking together and some kids came by and were yelling racial slurs at PBO. He ignored them and his Mom commented that “it’s just part of his life”. She didn’t react. If that is the way he was taught to deal with it–maybe that works the best for him. He certainly isn’t going to change the hearts of racist folks by talking to them about it–possibly just being the great president he is will point out to people how ignorant and nonproductive racism really is. I sure know that far right people hate it when I say that racism is to blame for a lot of the hatred we hear directed at President Obama. President Carter said the same thing–and that Southern guy sure should know. Thanks again for your thoughtful post.

    Smart move! http://www.azcentral.com/community/phoenix/articles/2012/01/27/20120127white-house-latino-summit-phoenix-tucson.html

White House officials on Saturday are leading a daylong summit on Hispanic community issues at Arizona State University’s downtown Phoenix campus as one of a series of meetings nationwide that are part of President Barack Obama’s Hispanic-initiatives agenda.

It’s a sign that the exponential growth in the Hispanic population could play a critical role in the November presidential election, as Obama and his Republican competitors try to capture their votes.

Jose Rico, director of White House Hispanic Initiatives, said the forums in at least 22 cities, including one next week in Tucson, are the result of brainstorming with Latino leaders who last summer attended the White House’s first Hispanic Policy Conference.

    Happy Saturday TOD

I’m heading out to our local OFA office to recruit volunteers for the campaign and do some data entry.

Our President worked his heart out for us this week. He is a phenomenal leader that personally inspires me to work hard for his re-election.

The grassroots fundraising team has been challenged by the campaign’s National Finance Director to step-up our fundraising since we are now on a monthly reporting cycle. We have our first monthly deadline coming to a fast close this Tuesday.

As you know I’m raising money on my grassroots fundraising page to help the President win this November. He is counting on people like you and me giving what we can afford to fuel this campaign. If possible, will you donate $5.00 to the campaign to help ensure that we can fund OFA offices and supply this campaign with everything it will need to be successful this November.

    My fundraising page:
