evening all

If it wasn’t for vcprez on Saturday most of us would never have known about our friend Kasai’s amazing talent ….. she was way too shy to tell us!

Treat yourself, have a look at KasaiCreations and RedBubble (where you can buy cards, prints and posters of Kasai’s work), they’re simply stunning.

• 194 State of the Union Watch Parties ranging from Key West all the way to Pensacola.

In November, Romney was rated somewhat or very negatively by 22 percent of independents.

In December, Romney was rated somewhat or very negatively by 29 percent of independents.

And in the new poll, Romney was rated somewhat or very negatively by 42 percent of independents — 20 points higher than two months ago.

Also: In November, Romney was beating Obama 47-34 among those voters. Now the numbers are upside down: Obama is beating Romney 44-36.

The Week

The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was the first act President Obama signed, fulfilling a campaign pledge.

The Act amended the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

It gave legal support to Lilly Ledbetter’s 1998 equal-pay lawsuit – a lawsuit that the Supreme Court ruled against in 2007, by a 5-4 majority.

Lilly Ledbetter’s case had been largely ignored until then, but the decision made it “a rallying issue for the left … in their attempt to persuade the public that the Supreme Court was moving too far to the right”. (See more here)

The bill was re-introduced in Congress in January 2009. It passed in the House of Representatives with 247 votes in support and 171 against. The vote was nearly perfectly split along party lines…. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act passed the Senate, 61-36, on January 22, 2009.

President Obama had long championed this bill and Lilly Ledbetter’s cause and by signing it into law ensured that women like Lilly Ledbetter and other victims of pay discrimination could effectively challenge unequal pay.

****

By the way, here’s how professional left darling Cenk “Obama is a moron” Uygur (the pure ‘progressive’ who’s only 41, but ….. is a ‘former’ Republican whose hero was Reagan, who voted for George HW Bush and Bob Dole, who opposed affirmative action, was anti-choice on the abortion issue, supported Clarence Thomas, had a serious problem with feminism, attended Federalist Society meetings (an organization of conservatives and libertarians co-founded by the charming Robert Bork) and, to this day, is an Armenian Genocide denier – and opposed PBO from almost his first day in office and called on Democrats to vote against him in this year’s Iowa primary …. PBO got 98.5% of the vote, so that worked well) described The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act:

“Eventually the Democrats had a 60 seat majority in the Senate, they were unstoppable. And what did we get? Lilly Ledbetter. If you don’t know, that’s a minor bill that passed in the beginning of the administration … it’s a good bill, that’s why I bring it up … about women being entitled to equal pay. God bless. Incredibly easy victory.”

A “minor” bill?

Ooops, Uygur’s inner Republican slipped out. He should try telling Lilly Ledbetter it’s a “minor” bill.

Read Hoos Left on this fraud, fantastic: “A failed corporate lawyer and neocon with an enhanced opinion of himself and an ego as fat as his broad ass.”

PS Uygur is so progressive, he followed Jane Hamsher and Glenn Greenwald’s lead by setting up a PAC pleading for donations for causes he, um, passionately believes in. And as Hamsher and Greenwald could tell you, these PACs can be very profitable ;-)

Spare a thought for GOP Rasmussen, something has gone horribly wrong with their polls:

51% with Rasmussen?! That means PBO must be about 76%! Thanks Loriah.

Our President, in connecting directly with ‘We the People …’ by totally leveraging every aspect of modern communications and networking technology has the answer to the the corporatist, plutocrat-serving broadcast media. He can connect to millions, in real time, and interact substantively.

Awww, ladies please come back!! I love it and I have made some really great friends and I mean REAL friends from that site. I was not happy about that thread either and please know that I let it be known. I think where she went wrong is by titling it “Must Read”. Mrs. T is super busy, so I think she only read the excerpts and as we all read, many people didn’t see issues with them. I don’t think she was promoting the book, though. I think she saw an article dealing with Mrs. O, read it, and thought it ok and put it on her blog. I don’t think she took a critical eye to it and read between the lines. I don’t know, but I think you should charge it to her mind and not her heart. I know she truly admires Mrs. O. Didn’t mean to go on and on about it, but I just wanted to share my take on it. I love the blog and it can get rowdy sometimes, although it’s been pretty tame lately, hahahaha!

            January 30, 2012 at 11:15 pm

Allen West will probably not be re-elected due to Republicans:

“On Friday, a House committee in Florida passed a redistricting map that, as Aaron Blake noted in the Washington Post, makes his already Democratic-leaning district more Democratic. The map could change before passage, and opponents are trying to get it thrown out entirely – but if it stands, it dims the reelection prospects for West, who won by nine points in 2010.”

Conservative and tea party blogs are having a hissy fit over this and are convinced that West is victim of Republican establishment and that’s why he’s being redistricted out of existence.

That may all be true. But my take away is that man has been running his mouth based on a 9-point mandate. I thought that he must have won by a significant amount for him to be so hardcore tea party. Nope. He’s their party’s Alan Grayson.

Kasai…what impresses me the most is the range of your talent…different styles and topics…no easy task there. You are so very talented!

    • January 30, 2012 at 11:07 pm

      Kasai,

I was blessed to be able to visit Africa for the first – and so far only – time about 12/15 years ago, I was lucky enough to spend two weeks in Zimbabwe, just before things got really horrible there.

It was my dream since I was a kid to visit Africa – anywhere in Africa! – so when the plane came in to land in Harare that day and I laid eyes on that red soil I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I’ll treasure that visit forever.

They were the most blissful two weeks of my entire life, and I still treasure the mementos I brought home – like the prints and wall-hangings I bought in a Harare market.

When I saw your work, it was like you had transported me back there, I felt that rush of joy again.

You have such a special talent. I seriously know nothing about art, but I do know that when you look at a work and it ignites all your senses and takes you back to a special place …. well, it’s amazing.

      And you’re amazing.

It’s a privilege to know you.

      • January 30, 2012 at 11:21 pm

Thank you for the honor Chips:-)

It really means a great deal to me..if just by chance I am able to lift someone’s spirit or make them smile, my job is done> You’ve honored me more than I could possibly dream of. Your kind spirit is felt miles away dear one….and so happy to be in your circle.

I thank you with all my heart :-)

Dear Kasai, after reading your bio and viewing your artwork I am reminded of a time in my youth when i heard of a living King who was black. Ebony magazine had an article with pictures of Haile Selassie. They called him the “Lion of Judah” because he was a descendent of Solomon. That was a BFD to a kid on The Southside of Chicago. All of a sudden being African was cool. Then later visiting the country that was mentioned specifically in the Bible was humbling. Your people were doing great things while most of the known world was living in caves and mud huts. Walk tall your Highness, walk tall.

          • January 31, 2012 at 12:48 am

Yardarm..Yes my bloodline is of King Solomon through Menelik. We have a rich history in religion and civilization. We were the first to fight Mussolini and won, defeated his army from colonization of my country, in the “Great Battle of Adwa”. I came to the US in the 70′ even back then I recall, some folks looked down on me…simply because I was from “Africa” I was terrified…but survived because of my faith and the will to change minds…sometimes it was hard for me to comprehend, but as I went along it made me stronger to share my culture with people that were open minded enough to learn. Art has giving me the outlet to merge our human spirit.
            Thank you Yardarm756

I’m reposting a comment from The YouTube thread, that replies to why the MSM is important:

The problem with biased main stream media is that …”48 percent of voters ranked the Internet as the second most impactful advertising medium, second only to television (66 percent).” [excerpt from http://blog.topix.com/2011/11/research-shows-big-link-between-commenting-online-voting.html%5D Many people cannot afford internet access and some people do not know how to use it. I do not think it is fair to imply these people do not matter.

I know the TOD community have our President’s back, and take every opportunity to email, comment, tweet, phone, canvas, et al; and I thought today’s event was just FANTASTIC; and I couldn’t be more grateful to Chipsticks for the difference she makes in my life.

BUT … I think the MSM is still the MAIN STREAM.

Wow Mr. Manley nails it. This is an exact case where a study/poll was done and based on just the blind stats it shows that the President is polarized but one has to ask why. Not just leave it an open statement that his Presidency has been polarized because it gives the appearance that its the Presidents doing. No one bothered to explain that its because of the Republican Party’s agenda to “hope he fails” and to make his being a one-term President their top priority even in the face of an economic crisis.

I’m glad he pushed back on this.

      {Snip}
I guess the larger point that I am trying to make is that President Obama should not be blamed for the sharply polarized tone of the current political process because Republicans have made such an aggressive shift to the right. Or, put slightly differently, the President CAN be blamed for his unwillingness to go further to right than the American people are comfortable with — and for that he has been demonized and vilified by the right.

Anyway, I can kinda see how the MSM is gonna work to make Romney’s transformation from RW candidate to the center is gonna work, but that just means that we gotta be vigilant and fired up.

I think the Obama campaign is ready for Romney though.

***** This is a Call to Act for California TOD****

There was a vote for the California Single Payer bill SB810 and it failed because these five Democratic representatives abstained. Another vote will take place again tomorrow. If any of these representatives are in your area, call them to change their vote. If the legislature can pass the bill tomorrow, Jerry Brown will sign it and we will be on our way to be another Single Payer state.

    http://themonkeycage.org/blog/2012/01/30/politics-is-a-matter-of-life-and-death-times-23000/

In Why Some Politicians Are More Dangerous than Others, Gilligan documents a striking statistical connection between changing rates of violent death in the United States over the past century and the party of the president. He concludes that Republican administrations are “risk factors for lethal violence,” and that the only reason they have not produced “disastrously high epidemic levels” of suicides and homicides is that Democrats have repeatedly undone their damage

We need to do this for our brothers and sisters.

    • 136 desertflower
      January 30, 2012 at 11:00 pm

Bob…you may want to Tweet this article above: MORE

Gilligan attributes these very different trends in violent death rates to consistent differences in the parties’ policies and performance with respect to unemployment, economic inequality, and recessions, which in turn have substantial effects on “individual emotional and psychological health and welfare.” (The first of these links draws, in part, upon my work.) He argues that intense shame or humiliation is usually “the immediate psychological motive, or cause, of violent behavior,” and that “these feelings can be stimulated and exacerbated by many stressors in the social environment, one of the most powerful and common of which is the experience of being fired from one’s job, or for any other reason suffering a severe loss of socio-economic status; this experience has been more frequent and prolonged under Republican than under Democratic administrations throughout the twentieth century, and compensatory measures to reduce the intensity of the humiliation (e.g. the WPA under Roosevelt) have been more extensive and effective under Democratic than under Republican presidents.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. —Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, the National Park Service and the Trust for the National Mall today hosted a lighting ceremony to celebrate the installation of energy-efficient LED lights on the Mall.  The LED lights, donated by OSRAM SYLVANIA and installed pro bono by Pepco, the electric utility that serves Washington, D.C., will reduce lighting energy use for the streetlamps by up to 65 percent.

“Achieving an economy built on American energy will require an all-of-the-above approach, one that includes safely and responsibly developing our domestic energy resources – and making the most of what we have available through efficiencies,” said Secretary Salazar. “There is no more fitting place to build a model of energy efficiency than right here in America’s front yard, the National Mall, with the installation of these LED lights.”

Wonderful work, Kasai. I love your use of contrasting/complimentary colors in the paintings. I had actually seen these a while ago when I checked the website out via twitter. Reminds me that I really need to gt back to my own creative passion. I’m starting again slowly, but it’s tough when your mind’s been preoccupied for so long, which was the case for me. Virginia state Sen. Janet Howell (D) thinks that if the government is going to force women to undergo medically unnecessary tests, then it is only fair to apply the same standards to men.

Republican lawmakers are pushing for legislation that would require pregnant women to have an ultrasound before terminating their pregnancy. In response, Howell introduced an amendment that would require men to have a rectal exam and a cardiac stress test before obtaining erectile dysfunction medication like Viagra.

“Well, believe it. It’s happening, courtesy of the Romney Team and spokesperson [Will] Weatherford. This is the establishment fighting back against tea party stalwarts. Attacking Allen West in Florida??? What more do you need in order to see what Mitt Romney is?” added BigFurHat at the iOwnTheWorld blog.

Others were less conspiratorial, and instead focused on the fact that West has made enemies among some powerful players in Washington, D.C.

“Now I’m not saying Romney himself is behind this. That seems a bit absurd. It’s more likely that he’s made enemies in DC whose tentacles are reaching into the state legislatures to do their bidding. It seems pretty clear that there are some who definitely don’t like West’s level of Tea Party influence and that the long knives are out for him,” wrote a blogger at The Right Scoop.

The ownership of the fabled Kennedy home at the family’s Hyannis Port compound is being transferred to the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, a move that brings to an end the family’s 84-year ownership of the 21-room house.
The Institute announced this afternoon it had taken over the waterfront homestead and will use it as a study center. It said the transfer ‘’fulfills a promise made by Senator Kennedy to his mother Rose that the home be preserved for charitable use.’’

The $5.5 million property is the centerpiece of the compound, where some of the nation’s most dramatic modern political history took place. The compound also includes other Kennedy homes, including former President John F. Kennedy’s house, which will remain in the family.

Apparently propping up Mitt Romney is a bad career move:

“Matt Strawn is expected to step down as Chairman of the Republican Party of Iowa soon, sources tell NBC News.

The exact timing and reason for the anticipated resignation is unknown.

Questions were raised about Strawn’s continuation as Chairman of the GOP after the final Iowa Caucus votes came in earlier this month.
Mitt Romney was declared the winner of the caucus by 8 votes during the wee hours of the morning on caucus night. After the certified results came in nearly two weeks later, Rick Santorum pulled ahead of Romney by 34 votes.

The switch of winners was not the full extent of the discrepancy — there were also 8 final precinct numbers missing.”

I wondered at the time how the results of the 8 missing precincts could have affected the race. Might they have been embarrassing to Romney and not produced the inertia he needed at the beginning of the race? I had also heard that since they were missing they had to call it a tie to both Santorum and Romney before Santorum started taking credit for the win. Seems like the fix was in from the bery beginning. When the results were not as liked the results were not found.

OT, but can anyone tell me when’s Inauguration Day? Reason I’m asking is that Jan 20th is a Sunday and that’s the official Inauguration, so that’s supposed to be private swearing in by noon; the next day, Jan 21, is MLK,, Fed Holiday. Fed Rules say if 20th falls on a Sunday, then inauguration falls on the “next succeeding day” and that’s MLK Day next year. (How cool is that?) So is Inauguration Day then Tues 22?

    • 233 hopefruit2

      Good question!

// The 2013 Presidential Inauguration Day, January 20, 2013, falls on a Sunday. By law, the President must take his Oath of Office on January 20th before noon. In past years when January 20th fell on a Sunday, there was a private ceremony on that date, but the public ceremony was held the following day. Most likely, the President will be sworn in twice. Monday, January 21, 2013 is Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday which is also a federal holiday. So, what day will the public event be held? Sunday, Monday or Tuesday? The date has not yet been announced. (Note, details will be announced here as soon as available). A week of festivities will include the Presidential Swearing in Ceremony, Inaugural Address, Inaugural Parade and a night of Inaugural Balls and galas honoring the new President of the United States.//

When will Willard ever learn? You don’t try copy President Obama – EVER! He is one of a kind.

What a damn fool. His “America the beautiful” cringe-inducing performance is NOT going to trend on Twitter…it’s not going to send truckloads of folks to Youtube…it’s not going to get young people to suddenly find “America The Beautiful” cool again…it’s not going to spike sales of the song by 5% much less 490%…it’s not going to have the media playing ATB on loop all day…it might end up as a SNL Skit or providing fodder for the late night comedy shows…but that’s about it.

Keep trying Willard…and keep failing…because you’re so damn arrogant, you never learn.

    SO TRUE!

Diaz-Balart has a brother in Congress and another brother retired from Congress. Both have endorsed Willard.

He has a chip on his shoulder bc PBO didn’t do immigration reform his 1st year. Because as we know, PBO had nothing better to do his 1st year and was twiddling his thumbs. Sick of these people!

“Obama was ‘stumped’ by engineering jobs query, questioner Jennifer Wedel says”

WHAT AN IDIOT! PBO IS TRYING TO HELP YOU AND ALL YOU DO IS BADMOUTH HIM IN THE MEDIA? YOU WILL ONLY VOTE FOR HIM IF HE PERSONALLY FINDS YOUR HUSBAND A JOB? WHAT A HORSE’S A**

And that is the only headlines from yesterday, if you missed it, you would have thought it was an epic fail, because of this girls interviews.
The MSM does it all the time.

I am not at all surprised by this quote. Did anyone here not SEE Jennifer’s attitude during her questioning? I definitely saw traces of the underlying ‘foreigners are taking our jobs’ mentality. Sure not having income is reason for a family to be frustrated, but someone should tell her that HER attitude certainly isn’t helping. For one thing, after the President said send hubby’s resume and I’ll look into it, how does she figure publicizing her criticism aids her cause? Some people are so……(dumb) blind to anything other than ‘the moment’. Wonder if her husband’s attitude is anything like hers, and part of the reason he’s still unemployed while supposedly having good qualifications. Sometimes qualifications aren’t everything, a major chip on your shoulder that seeps through in an interview, or in your previous jobs, can hold you back too. Idiot Jennifer queering her own pitch …in the media! Then again, she may have pleased some embittered, GOP-leaning ‘job creator’ enough for him/her to offer her husband a job while the news is still ‘hot’. I wish her luck in any case.

Planning for the May NATO and G-8 meetings in Chicago is ramping up: On Tuesday, two White House advisors–Ben Rhodes, Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications, and Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, Senior Director for European Affairs–hit Chicago for a series of briefings on the substantive foreign policy issues the global leaders will be discussing. They will be meeting with the Host Committee, the large consular corps and local journalists.
Meanwhile, teams from Washington–the “planning task force” –have been working on the physical planning–venues for events, etc. The summits’ main meetings will take place in the McCormick Place complex but there will be a variety of related events–including probably head of state spouse programs–at other sites.

In respone to Xtine’s Inauguration question:

The biggest quirk is that most federal employees in the Washington area are given the day off every four years on Inauguration Day to make way for the revelers in town for the inaugural parade and balls.

Though the 20th Amendment states that a president’s term ends at “noon on the 20th day of January,” Jan. 20, 2013 is a Sunday. Whenever federal holidays fall on a Sunday, the government moves them to Monday, meaning that whoever is inaugurated next year is likely to be sworn in twice — once privately on the 20th and again in public on the 21st.

Whoever wins the presidency this year is likely to follow swearing-in precedent set by Ronald Reagan and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Reagan took the oath of office for the second time privately on Sunday Jan. 20, 1985, and during a public (indoor) ceremony the next day. Eisenhower took the oath again during a private White House ceremony on Sunday Jan. 20, 1957, and repeated it publicly on the East Portico of the Capitol on Monday Jan. 21. (For those of you keeping score, this Monday-to-Sunday fluke occurs every 28 years, so it will happen again in 2041, 2069 and 2097.)

So will federal workers in the Washington area still get Inauguration Day off next year? Yes and no.

Mon. Jan. 21 is also Martin Luther King Jr. Day — a federal holiday enjoyed by all federal employees — meaning that D.C. area workers will be out of the office, but not because of the inauguration, according to OPM.

Alycee, thanks so much for your response. Wow, I didn’t know it occurs every 28 years! This is definitely a great sign! Hopefruit2 also has a response upthread. Seems that the actual day is TBD. Well, better get back my 4 More Years business! :)

Kasai — for the last 15 years all of my Christmas shopping is done at either art and craft fairs or made by me personally. I support artists, real people.

I’ll be ordering from your site this year — your work is inspiring.
