First lady Michelle Obama is joined by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa at the future site of a Northgate Market in Inglewood, Calif., Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012. Michelle Obama says the proposed new supermarket in the middle of a blue-collar Hispanic neighborhood in Southern California is an example of how the effort to bring healthy foods to low-income communities is paying off.

AP: First lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday said the campaign to bring healthy food to all Americans is happening neighborhood by neighborhood.

Standing in a vacant Southern California store set to be refurbished and reopened this summer, Obama lauded efforts to bring large grocery retailers to inner-city areas that traditional supermarket chains spurn.

…. Obama, who is on the second day of her two-day visit to the Los Angeles area, made the stop in the blue-collar, largely Hispanic neighborhood as part of her “Let’s Move!” campaign to boost healthy food and fitness.

Part of the campaign includes promoting initiatives such as the $264 million California FreshWorks Fund, which finances grocery businesses willing to open in urban areas.

…. After the Inglewood event, Obama was scheduled to appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and to deliver a luncheon speech at the Democratic National Committee.

Washington Post: U.S. factories grew in January at the fastest pace in seven months, boosted by a rise in new orders. And builders ended a poor year for construction by spending more on homes and projects for the fifth straight month.

The reports bolster other data showing the U.S. economy started the year strong.

The Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers, said Wednesday that its manufacturing index rose last month to 54.1 from 53.1 in December. Readings above 50 indicate expansion.

Consumers are buying more cars and trucks, while businesses ordered more machinery and other equipment. That has driven manufacturing, which expanded for the 30th straight month.

Both new orders and order backlogs rose to nine-month highs. Increasing order backlogs suggest manufacturers are lacking the capacity to meet demand. That could mean more growth in production and employment in the near future, economists said.

Export orders also rose, a sign that U.S. manufacturers haven’t yet been affected by Europe’s slowing economy.

“This is a very encouraging report on manufacturing activity that shows particular strength in leading indicators,” said John Ryding, an economist at RDQ Economics.

Steve Benen: For campaign watchers, Florida’s Republican presidential primary was the big draw yesterday, but there was another noteworthy race on the other side of the country: a U.S. House special election in Oregon’s 1st congressional district.

Just two weeks ago, the National Republican Congressional Committee took an interest in the race, airing attack ads against Democratic candidate Suzanne Bonamici. The GOP candidate, Rob Cornilles, even released an internal poll showing him trailing by only four points.

Yesterday, however, it became clear Republicans were chasing a mirage.

Democrat Suzanne Bonamici swept to victory Tuesday in Oregon’s 1st Congressional District, continuing her party’s nearly four-decade-long hold on the seat covering the northwestern corner of the state. With the bulk of ballots counted, Bonamici was defeating Republican Rob Cornilles by about 15 percentage points…..

Yahoo: If you watched President Obama’s Google+ hangout Monday night, you saw two interesting exchanges between the president and Jennifer Wedel, a 29-year-old Texas mother of two.

It turns out that Wedel’s digital meeting convinced her to vote for Obama in this year’s presidential election – despite her support for the GOP.

…. Afterwards, Wedel, who described herself as a “good Republican,” is now planning to vote for Obama in this year’s presidential election.

“I didn’t vote for him four years ago. But I have been so disappointed with the presidential race. I haven’t seen anybody who would have been a good replacement. I know how Obama is now. I know how he rolls. So I’d probably vote him back in,” said Wedel in an interview with The Atlantic. “I (feel) like I know him a little more,” Wedel said. “There was a connection. He should definitely do this with more people…..”

….. for those who watched the event, a slightly odd moment near the end might have jumped out. During that personal question round, Wedel asked Obama if he would do a little jig. Obama demurred. What was that about? It’s a YouTube meme thing, explained Wedel. An extremely popular video on the site is a minute-and-a-half clip of then-candidate Obama shaking it on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” back in 2007; one version has 12 million hits and counting.

“It’s so funny,” said Wedel. “You’ve got to watch it.”

Liberal Librarian, I just dragged myself off a sickbed to see what was happening here (and get another pillow) and saw your avatar on the side bar! I didn’t get the full impact of that great picture from the tiny pic on your comments. What a cheer-up that was — I laughed out loud I was so startled. I love it!

Whew, I’m still trying to catch up, but now that I see you here, LL, I want to say thank you for that scrumptious essay you wrote earlier. It was mentally very tasty and satisfying. From your keyboard to the ears of the universe, good buddy. Thing o beauty.

LL, just wanted to say a grand “Thank You” for your fab commentary. Read the whole piece twice on my commute home. Totally cracked up every time with the “rhetorical pretzel.” Damn! That. Was. Good. I’ll never look at a pretzel again without cracking up!

I actually took a quick looksie at Ed Show, & Bob Shrum described Willard as having lots of baggage, but his baggage is Louis Vuitton. OK, he was half-way right, I think Willard has a container full of blooming garbage. Calling all container ships … come back, you forgot Willard”s. The LV baggage still made me laugh! Wish I had a talent for drawing toons!

Totally ignored MSM last night. I did watch Pol. Nation this evening. Probably time to switch off my teevee so I don’t wear out Chips’ CERB button! :)

      CIRCUMVENTING THE MEDIA FIREWALL

I understand this Jennifer story is anecdotal but I will take every potential convert we can get. After all there is a group called “Republicans for Obama”. But as anecdotes go, this has got cause some real concern for the GOP. President Obama circumvented the media firewall and got to speak directly to a Republican who had some issues and clearly did not know the measure of the man. Presto chango a Republican gets to see the real President Obama and finds out that he does not have horns. I think David Plouffle and David Axelrod are probably trying to figure out when they can schedule the next Google Hangout. The media firewall continues to be one of the biggest obstacle to getting the facts about President Obama to the American people. That’s why the jackals get so cranky when PBO uses state of the art social networking tools to connect with the people. By not doing their job of reporting the facts, they have become irrelevant.

      • February 1, 2012 at 4:29 pm

I agree with that Ladyhawke, this Jennifer character doesn’t impress me much, but after this she is completely ‘unusable’ for the GOP. I’ll take that.

I can’t stand her, I saw her again calling POTUS, Obama. No respect for President Obama, but she beg for him to help get her husband a job. The witch could at least call him President Obama instead of Obama.

        • February 1, 2012 at 6:02 pm

She impressed me poorly, too, Chipsticks. I’m assuming a wait-and-see attitude. The jig thing, especially. In the clip I saw with Generes, Obama’s dancing was a gentle, cool few steps, not a jig, and I didn’t see it as hilarious. It must have been a different scene on the program!

I’d like to take this opportunity, too, to thank you a thousand times your excellent work with this blog, how you do it all is beyond me, and I so love the photos! The good news, especially. Many of us here would never find the good stuff among the mass of bad stuff. And the opportunity you give to posters to bring us even more good news and things going on that we should write about, petitions to sign — it’s like the Loaves and Fishes in political news.

Joan, lovely to hear from you, I know you’ve been battling to get back to good health, so I always really appreciate it when you drop in. It’s actually getting easier and easier to update the blog because of everyone else’s hard work, usually I just sit back and file my nails while people like Jovie do all the hard news-collecting graft – then I just copy and paste!

How are things with you Joan, I hope you’re getting your strength back?

            • February 1, 2012 at 11:05 pm

Chipsticks, Along with my librarian daughter, I’ve caught a cold — eerily, with the same exact symptoms. I think we picked it up at the Emergency Room because she stayed with me. Some time around midnight, I appeared to be gasping for breath and my husband couldn’t wake me up. Melanie dressed and rushed over and Alan called 9-1-1. What a fooferall! I finally came halfway around after all those people wound up in our bedroom, but had trouble speaking — seven EMTs in the room including the local sheriff’s deputy.

Alan was sitting on the side of the bed holding me, Melanie was pressed up against the closet doors, I was in-and-out conscious. I can’t seem to get a realistic answer on what caused it. Stroke? Heart attack? They settled on a heart attack, but it wasn’t that, either. I went to see my regular doctor after this was all over and I told him I was sure it was a panic attack of some kind after a very stressful day writing up a piece about wild turkeys and then not being able to upload it! File Transfer wouldn’t work.

I was furious at the software, very angry, I should have taken a Xanax and gone to sleep. The doctor didn’t agree with the panic attack, but his diagnosis sounded so off the wall, it didn’t make sense.

Anyway, I was thinking of you the whole time, the way you are constantly uploading, collecting photos and writing analysis and controlling comments and searching out videos and links and keeping track of important meetings and rallies and YOU don’t get rushed to the emergency room with a siren wailing!

I was really embarrassed, such an unholy fuss and I was worried about Alan having a heart attack. But also glad when I could finally talk like I WASN’T drunk so I could tell the nurse that I had to go to the bathroom. Got a catheter instead. Never mind. We all got in the car eventually, we were in there forever, I in my night gown and wrapped in one of the hospital’s blankets, and twenty miles later, we were home.

I crept into my bed and fell asleep with Alan keeping an ear cocked for my breathing. Melanie took two days off. I’ve never had so much attention and was relieved that Alan and she could answer the phone, and that it hadn’t hurt Alan’s heart.

Anyway, thank you for being you. I marvel how you keep it altogether.!

Ladyhawke, I agree with you 100%! President Obama’s biggest problem is the so called mainstream media (MSM). When people get to see and hear the President, without the MSM filters, they quickly realize that what they’ve been told by the media, and the GOP, about the President is totally false.

Ok, you guys are seriously giving me a Newt-sized head. Thank you for all your kind words. I wrote it last night after listening to Willard and Leroy spew their poison. Really, when you think of it, all they’re really doing is motivating the Obama base; their own base, as shown by the anemic participation yesterday, is probably going to skip this election. So keep it up, guys. We’ll just keep reaching out, donating, and communicating with each other and those who are ready for something new for this country.

Meaning she hopes her faux pas about singing and dancing doesn’t cause OFA to cease this method of communicating? Is any one person strong enough to influence OFA?

    • February 1, 2012 at 6:19 pm

Personally, I don’t trust her conversion – especially when her husband still needs a job. However, skepticism aside, I did like the part of her interview where she talked about how the energy was so positive and good. She’s probably starved of positive energy, residing in GOP-land, and once she got a taste of how life is in “Obama-land”, where hope and optimism exist, she was stunned into consciousness. Hopefully, it rubs off on a few of her ilk.

Looks like this oldie but goodie is making the rounds again:

    Taking America Back!!!!!

IF ONLY THOSE WHO SEEM TO BE SO MAD AT OBAMA WOULD READ THIS AND REFLECT A MOMENT, THEY MIGHT SAY:

    Hmmmmmmmmmm… YOU MIGHT BE RIGHT!!………

    SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT!!!!

Now, since Obama’s regime, all of a sudden, folks have gotten mad, and want to take America Back…BACK TO WHAT/WHERE is my question?

After The 8 Years Of The Bush/Cheney Disaster, Now You Get Mad?

You didn’t get mad when the Supreme Court stopped a legal recount and appointed a President.

You didn’t get mad when Cheney allowed Energy company officials to dictate Energy policy and push us to invade Iraq.

You didn’t get mad when we illegally invaded a country that posed no threat to us.

You didn’t get mad when we spent over 800 billion (and counting) on said illegal war.
You didn’t get mad when Bush borrowed more money from foreign sources than the previous 42 Presidents combined.

You didn’t get mad when over 10 billion dollars in cash just disappeared in Iraq.

You didn’t get mad when Bush embraced trade and outsourcing policies that shipped 6 million American jobs out of the country.

You didn’t get mad when they didn’t catch Bin Laden.

You didn’t get mad when Bush rang up 10 trillion dollars in combined budget and current account deficits.

You didn’t get mad when you saw the horrible conditions at Walter Reed.

You didn’t get mad when we let a major US city, New Orleans, drown.

You didn’t get mad when we gave people who had more money than they could spend, the 1%, over a trillion dollars in tax breaks.

You didn’t get mad with the worst 8 years of job creations in several decades.

You didn’t get mad when over 200,000 US Citizens lost their lives because they had no health insurance.

You didn’t get mad when lack of oversight and regulations from the Bush Administration caused US Citizens to lose 12 trillion dollars in investments, retirement, and home values.

You finally got mad when a black man was elected President and decided that people in America deserved the right to see a doctor if they are sick. Yes, illegal wars, lies, corruption, torture, job losses by the millions, stealing your tax dollars to make the rich richer, and the worst economic disaster since 1929 are all okay with you, but helping fellow Americans who are sick… Oh, Hell No!

Is that the woman that asked him to dance a jig?

    • February 1, 2012 at 4:53 pm

Linda, she’s speaking like a Republican and so has an over exaggerated image of herself. HOWEVER, she is reflecting how a Republican would change his or her mind. The statement “I know how he rolls,” is very telling. People know our PBO and they don’t know Romney nor do they have any clue how “he would roll.” I think in the end, there will be a lot of presently “iffy” voters who will go with the one they know, rather than take a risk. I remember getting on the phone to Democrats in 2004 to get them to vote for John Kerry and hearing several say they were reluctant to change horses in mid stream even if the horse was George Bush. I was horrified at the time. But that is the power of incumbency and this time it’s working for us.

      • 41 majii
        February 1, 2012 at 5:54 pm

There is also the possibility that she will discuss her experience with PBO and cause some of them to change their minds about who he is and what he’s done for the nation, too. An extra benefit of her interaction with PBO, imo.

Panetta Sets End to Afghan Combat Role for U.S. in ’13
    By ELISABETH BUMILLER
    Published: February 1, 2012

BRUSSELS — In a major milestone toward ending a decade of war in Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said on Wednesday that American forces would step back from a combat role there as early as mid-2013, more than a year before all American troops are scheduled to come home.

After watching the last few minutes of Google+ with PBO, I was convinced that he’d won Jennifer completely over. Her kids looked pretty shocked when she pulled them into view, so I’m sure that’s a family that’s heard nothing but anti-Obama stuff since he took office. She was grinning so hugely when she said goodbye, I just KNEW she would end up VOTING FOR HIM!!!!

PBO is just all that and so much more. He blows my mind. They throw the kitchen sink at him and he catches it in mid-air, pulls out some tools and hooks it up and runs the water. Whatever they throw at him just makes him STRONGER.

Folks, we are gonna win this thing so big come November! I can’t wait!!!

In light of LL’s wonderful essay, I ask a serious question, how can a man who says “Corporations are people, my friend”, who had a Swiss bank account, and who says he does not care about poor people possibly be elected President of the United States in 2012 under any circumstances?

    • February 1, 2012 at 5:33 pm

He won’t be. We’ll make sure of that.

But when Willard made that “corporations are people” comment, he actually was speaking a legal truth. This, from a wonderful documentary I urge everyone to watch, “The Corporation”:

Corporations were given the rights of immortal persons. But then special kinds of persons, persons who had no moral conscience. These are a special kind of persons, which are designed by law, to be concerned only for their stockholders. And not, say, what are sometimes called their stakeholders, like the community or the work force or whatever.

So, legally speaking, not only are corporations “people”, but they’re better than you and I, as they don’t have to act as circumscribed as we do in our daily lives. This is a battle for down the line, but stripping corporations of “personhood” has to be one of the things for which we aim.

Anyone else inspired as I am to donate more $ to electing PBO after listening to Newt or Mitt? Earlier today I listened to Mitt’s remarks with Soledad about how he is not worried about the poor. All i can hope is that the foolishness going on in the GOP inspires more people to donate to PBO’s reelection! Later this afternoon I read an email from VP Joe asking for $5 towards the convention i quickly sent $5! I just read an email from Messina asking for $15 and I am quite sure i’ll hop on that one too!

I’ve had to stop myself from donating after all these three – I was getting a little crazy! I’ll use up the entire month’s budget in just one day! But the great thing is that they only ask for a few dollars – $5 makes a difference.

Denver Komen Affiliate Will Continue Providing Grants To Planned Parenthood |

While the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation announced its organization will no longer partner with Planned Parenthood, the group’s local affiliate in Denver is breaking from the rest of the Komen organization.

The Denver affiliate announced today that the national organization granted it an exception to continue funding Planned Parenthood. “Now more than ever Komen Denver Metropolitan Affiliate has a responsibility to support the underserved community and we will continue to help ensure that all women have access to quality breast health care,” the local group wrote on its Facebook page.

In 2010, the Denver affiliate’s grant to Planned Parenthood funded breast health and cancer education for 2,264 women, 601 clinical breast exams, and referred and paid for 57 mammograms, officials said.

    Update

The Connecticut affiliate withdrew its support for the national Susan G. Komen organization, and the group wrote on its Facebook page that it enjoys a great partnership with Planned Parenthood of Southern New England. “We understand, and share, in the frustration around this situation,” the group wrote.

TRUTHINESS FROM A SAUDI OIL MINISTER

Oh dear, another GOP talking point bites the dust. How will they explain this?? Europe has already proved that austerity is not the way to go. Now this.

    ===========================

The Saudi oil minister, who probably knows more about oil than anyone on the planet, says oil doesn’t create jobs and that climate change is very real.

The Saudis know they have a very limited commodity with a more or less firm sell-by date. All the Gulf states are trying desperately to diversify their economies for the time when the oil finally runs out, or the rest of the world gets a burr up its bottom and tackles climate change. The only ones who’ll still be chanting “Drill, baby, drill” will be the dead-enders in whatever is left of the GOP.

I don’t actually understand this issue well, Jovie. Was Melissa Hennenberg’s characterization fair? It is true that without the Catholic Church, ACA would have been very hard to have passed. It’s also true many Catholics voted for PBO while being pro-life. I don’t see why they couldn’t have provided an exemption esp. after it seemed like they were heading in that direction.

      • February 1, 2012 at 5:53 pm

The Democrats did not put in any waiver information in order to placate Emilys list.

          February 1, 2012 at 6:13 pm

Why would they give Emily’s List a waiver when they are in favor of contraceptives and that’s what the ruling HHS gave was? The Catholic Church takes issue with contraceptives. Yet they supported PBO’s ACA becaues they believed it was the right thing to do. I don’t see why they couldn’t have handled this in a different mannter and/or given them an exemption. This goes to the heart of their faith. It’s like telling someone of Islamic faith they have to eat pork. Maybe I’m missing an angle here.

      • February 1, 2012 at 6:37 pm

Isn’t providing birth control also being pro-life, since it will limit the number of unwanted pregnancies? I don’t understand the Catholic outrage here. It’s hypocritical for them to have spent the entire Bush presidency without a single whimper about abortion, then to start screeching when someone tries to ensure that there are less unwanted pregnancies and less need for abortion! If you’re going to provide health care to women, then you should provide them with birth control. If they don’t want to take birth control because of religious conviction, then they shouldn’t take it. That simple. President Obama is not forcing Catholic women to take birth control – he’s just making it easier for them if they choose to take it – and some women take birth control for other reasons, other than controlling pregnancy. Crazy.

          February 1, 2012 at 9:21 pm

Sorry, you can’t just dismiss someone’s religious beliefs like that. PBO is smart enough to understand that this wasn’t exactly handled in the smoothest way possible. He needs to iron out a compromise here.

          • February 2, 2012 at 3:33 am

But why does a religious belief have to be enforced by the government? If you believe that birth control is wrong, then you don’t have to take it – simply because it’s made available. I don’t think the President is dismissing any religious beliefs. He’s simply making birth control available. Those who don’t wish to take it, don’t have to. I have a problem with a religious institution forcing their beliefs on their followers, as though that guarantees their salvation.

      • 132 57andFemale
        February 1, 2012 at 6:51 pm

I really don’t get this. Offer the benefit. Who is forcing anyone to get the prescription? They are not entitled to an exemption, assuming they can use their religious beliefs against the rest of us. You don’t choose to use contraception? Your right, and it doesn’t cost you or anyone else a dime.

      • February 1, 2012 at 6:56 pm

If I remember correctly it was Catholic Democratic members of the House, Sestak and others, who added to the difficulty of passing ACA and forced the President to reinforce that federal funding can’t go towards abortion – something to do with making the Hyde amendment tougher. I also recall that the admin got a lot of push back when it was reported that he was meeting with Catholics to discuss whether they should be exempt. And those protesting were ALSO huge supporters.

President Obama got rid of Bush’s conscientious objector rule. Makes no sense to not follow it here.

    • February 1, 2012 at 6:40 pm

i wonder how many Catholic women do NOT use contraceptives and just use the “Rhythm Method”

    • February 1, 2012 at 8:09 pm

Obama needs to fix this. I am Catholic and he needs to reach a compromise with the church on this or it may cost him in the Fall.

Kindly put President before Obama. He doesn’t have to fix a thing. Birth Control is for people who want to use it. If you don’t, go on using the rhythm method or the withdrawal method and good luck with that. Being a Catholic shouldn’t stop people from using commomn sense. So many babies are being born to people who can’t afford them or just don’t care about them. Women should just go ahead and have their unwanted babies and leave them at the doors of their neighborhood Catholic church.

Congressional Democrats are committed to reigniting the American dream by rebuilding the pillars of America that have made our economy strong: small businesses, entrepreneurs, and a thriving middle class.

And while House Republicans—who have been in the Majority for over a year—still don’t have a jobs agenda, Americans support President Obama’s proposals to grow our economy and strengthen the middle class:

Imagine an alternate reality where the first term of President Barack Obama coincided with one of the greatest periods of government austerity in recent memory. Imagine total government spending under his watch had the steepest annual decline in three decades. Imagine total government employees fell by the fastest rate in more than 60 years. Imagine that in his last two years, federal spending and federal employment grew by the slowest annual rate since the 1950s.

Now open your eyes. Welcome to Austerity USA. Total government employment — that’s federal, state, and local — has indeed fallen by the sharpest annual rate since the 1940s. It’s now at 2006 levels and declining.

Ok, I’m more than a little bit peeved. I just finished seeing the Gallup state numbers that everyone was so up in arms about, predicting a huge Obama loss.

    1. These are based on approval numbers, not head to head match ups. In just the past days we’ve had polling that has PBO beating all GOP comers in Ohio, Florida, and Pennsylvania. Yet all 3 states are shown going GOP in the Gallup analysis.

    2. Predicting what’s going to happen in 11 months before candidate Obama has even begun, you know, campaigning is a poisoning the well of the highest order.

    3. All that said, this should be a wakeup call to all the ratfuckers out there who think there’s no difference between the two parties. Wake the fuck up! Shoq is waging a dual front campaign on Twitter today, splitting his attention between the poll and Komen.

    4. The good thing is that as a predictive tool, this poll is next to useless. PBO may not have high approval ratings, but his opponents have even lower ones. It’s just time to put our noses to the grindstone and deliver.

“Although President Obama’s polling numbers have been trending upwards for a few months now, the right wing media is claiming that the president is heading for a huge defeat based on a state by state analysis of an average of his 2011 Gallup approval ratings…Third, President Obama isn’t running for reelection against his own approval rating. He will be running against Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich. The more accurate way to measure Obama’s reelection chances is by looking at how he matches up with Mitt Romney in each state. When Obama and Romney are matched up on a state by state basis, guess what? Obama’s huge defeat becomes a huge victory.”

    More good news:
Yesterday, the New Mexico House of Representatives passed bill, 38-29, calling on Congress to amend the United States Constitution to overturn the infamous Citizens United ruling* and return our democracy to the people.

In a bi-partisan vote, a Republican and an Independent joined Democrats in supporting this bill, working together to make the New Mexico House one of the first full state legislative bodies in the country to officially endorse a Constitutional Amendment to reverse Citizens United.

The action goes next to the New Mexico State Senate, where a committee will consider an identical bill today, and, we hope the full Senate will soon follow.

I think someone posted this here earlier, but I can’t find it. Former WH Aide, Jared Bernstein, did a great analysis on the impact of Romney’s policies on the Safety Net that he’t touting. It’s pretty frightening.

    http://jaredbernsteinblog.com/gov-romney-and-concern-for-the-poor/

What thrills me is that while Romney spends his days throwing vile lies at the President, he’s hiding his policies – and neither the media nor the other GOP candidates question or challenge him. This is what the President will do when Romney finally gets in front of him. He won’t spend time refuting the lies and responding to personal attacks. He’ll bring out the policies that Romney has avoided talking about, and he’ll counter each one with the reasoned policies and their successful effects that have been implemented by the Obama Administration.

Lots of people have been talking about how the GOP are running against a fictional character, and they have forgotten that when the General Election debates start, it’s the REAL President Obama that will be showing up. I can’t wait.

    Re: Jennifer, the Google lady

Personally, I am pleased that she came over to our side and it’s my feeling that we should to be gracious to her, regardless of how she got here. Everyone may never feel as devoted to President Obama as we are and we don’t need them to be. At the very least, she is not going to be playing the “Joe the Plumber” persona for this election cycle and for that I am grateful.

As for her point about now she knows him, that’s extremely valid motivation to vote for President Obam and one reason why all the cray-cray stuff that Romney et al say about Obama won’t stick. The American people know Obama now and next to the Republican candidates, he looks sane and reasonable.

So, welcome, Jennifer, however which way you got here.

I AGREE…TO SAY SHE FELT A CONNECTION WITH THE PRESIDENT HAS MEANING!

My take on this Jennifer issue is that it’s an indictment on our mainstream media. Usually people who care to listen to, read or come face to face with PBO always come out with a positive opinion of him. The media has tacitly encouraged this straw man Obama the GOP has been hatefully promoting for the last 3 years, by not calling them out on their lies. This is why I hope the WH should arrange this Google+Hangout on a regular basis….the more regular folk who’re not as tuned-in like we are get to see and hear the Presidents in that type of setting – while circumventing the msm – the better for the campaign.

I agree. I didn’t like what she said at first, but she sounds like she really did make a connection. Let’s not make the perfect the enemy of the good.

So much good info coming out lately~ thank you so much for compiling it for us Chips.

On a differen, personal note (please bear with me), I have to share this because I’ve been flabberghasted by it all day: I woke up a bit late this morning – and had been dreaming that my 12 yr old son & I were at a hotel with a variety of people.. talking, dancing. There was a very ‘gray’ man.. gray (literally gray) face, clothes.. who chatted with me.. laughed and he danced with my son.. you know, doing dance moves together.. it was a happy atmospheric dream. And another man who was younger and not familiar to me. I asked the ‘gray’ man his name, because he was familiar to me – not in looks but in voice.. he told me, oh I’m Don Cornelius, and then the other guy said: I’m Don Lemon. Then I woke up, and about a half hour later go on the internet and the first headline I read is that Don Cornelius has died.. and had had health problems.

Now just let me say I have never thought about Don Cornelius, other than being like a gazillion other folks growing up watching Soul Train.. and my older kids growing up watching soul train. I’ve never had a dream about a celebrity EVER, except one Barack Obama dream just before or after he won the presidency (wherein he ignored me ;( ) and like other people I’ve had my moments of deja vu.. but I have been sincerely mystified by this today. And let me be clear I did not know of Don Cornelius’ passing until after I woke up.

If you read this, thank you.. because I really just needed to share it :)

Sheri was your tv or radio on while you were sleeping. My husband will awake before me and he turns on the tv in the morning so I have had dreams on occasion where I dream about something that is happening on the tv and I incorporate it into my dream.

      • February 1, 2012 at 7:34 pm

now that makes sense Donna! my radio went off at 9:30 this morning (central time) but I didn’t wake up/ get up until 10:10 this morning.. I think you’re spot on. dang thought I was becoming a ‘seer’ or something ;) seriously this had me going all darn day!

      • February 1, 2012 at 7:37 pm

oh I am sooo laughing at myself right now… I am certain this is exactly what happened to me. I just checked and the story on Don Cornelius hit the internet around 9:30 am ET.. thus it most likely would have been on my radio.

    From the “Really, Sherlock?” Department:

There’s no gentle way to put it: People who give in to racism and prejudice may simply be dumb, according to a new study that is bound to stir public controversy.

The research finds that children with low intelligence are more likely to hold prejudiced attitudes as adults. These findings point to a vicious cycle, according to lead researcher Gordon Hodson, a psychologist at Brock University in Ontario. Low-intelligence adults tend to gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, the study found. Those ideologies, in turn, stress hierarchy and resistance to change, attitudes that can contribute to prejudice, Hodson wrote in an email to LiveScience.

WASHINGTON — Republicans have pushed through the House a bill that would freeze the wages of federal workers for a third year and bar members of Congress from giving themselves a pay raise.

Republican sponsors said their measure, which would freeze federal worker wages through 2013, would save taxpayers $26 billion. It would not apply to military personnel.

Many Democrats objected to the freeze, arguing that federal workers already had done their part in reducing budget deficits. President Barack Obama is expected to propose a 0.5 percent hike in federal employee wages in this 2013 budget proposal.

But some Democrats were also reluctant to cast an election-year vote Wednesday that would suggest they support giving themselves a pay raise. The salaries of rank-and-file members of Congress has remained at $174,000 since 2009.

    —-

PBO should have said he wanted to reduce their wages…then the Republicans would have voted for an increase. They are so petty. !

The part of this bill that bars Congress from giving itself a pay raise is for show only. The 27th Amendment prevents members of Congress from voting themselves a pay increase/decrease until the next term of office begins. This is faux austerity, and whoever included this in the bill knows it or should have known it. I’m going to watch the republicans pretend that they are doing something to show solidarity with suffering Americans and curse every time they do it.

“The Twenty-seventh Amendment (Amendment XXVII) prohibits any law that increases or decreases the salary of members of the Congress from taking effect until the start of the next set of terms of office for Representatives. It is the most recent amendment to the United States Constitution, having been ratified in 1992, 203 years after its initial submission to the states for ratification.”

LL, thanks for that insightful entry in the earlier thread. You are a gifted writer. Your brilliant contrast of the Democratic and Republican parties was just amazing; reading it was a learning moment for me about American politics. It left me wondering at the lack of humanity of those on the right, at what kind of world we would live in if they were allowed to have their way.

I don’t know if Chips plan to keep this blog active after President Obama leaves office in 2017. Everyday, I read some truly informative narratives here and I wonder if they could be compiled (maybe into a book) so that members of this TOD family could have something to revisit ten years from now that would allow them to reminisce about the wonderful interactions they experienced and their loving support of PBO. Imagine sitting with family members and reading an entry made by HZ or What is Working, eight years from now. That certainly would help to perpetuate the admirable principles of American Democracy.

Chips, do you perchance have that video clip when Ted Kennedy did his speech at AU in DC 2008 and said, “I feel a change coming …” Apologies, but I don’t know how to embed a video here, or crop so that we get that that exact moment! It was such a beaut of a moment! Thank you! I so wanted to do that last night.. Somebody probably put it in song by now! :)

CHIPS! [Yelling that out LOUD, you are amazing!] That’s the one! I loved that moment when he said, “I feel change in the air!” I just loved the way he said that! Better than my paraphrasing. :) “He also has an un-common capacity to appeal to the better angels of our nature …” And he is!

        • February 1, 2012 at 10:07 pm

Ah xtine, thank you for reminding us of Ted’s speech, warmed my heart.

Awww, Chips, thank you for finding that and helping a techie-challenged person! :)

What makes this more poignant is that Ted was very physically sick, but his passion wasn’t! So I love that speech even more. The entire speech is fab! One word from it: Courage. We’re now in the fight for our country’s soul. To all of us, keep the passion alive! And fight super-hard for the better angels in us and our country. “I feel change in the air!” Indeed! As with change, air travels where it might.

I thought that was great too. I found it interesting to hear just after part about angels especially since that guest in that MSNBC clip Chis posted earlier today had a person in Newt’s campaign mentioning angels and Rev Al set him straight and said it is more like devils!
