Bringing this over from the last post, in case you missed it:

    Hi everyone,

One of our Australian friends here asked me to post this:

    https://www.odesk.com/jobs/Telesales-Reps-Appointment-Setters_~~7e702c0c9bf5a5e5

She runs a company that is currently looking for Telesales and Appointment Setters whose job would be to cold call businesses in Australia (working Monday to Friday Sydney local time).

She’s a seriously major PBO supporter, and would love to find someone from the blog – or a family member/friend – who is qualified in this area and who would be interested in one of the jobs.

If you’re interested, just email me at theobamadiary@gmail.com and I’ll hook you up with her.

Our friend would also love to buy some items from the OFA store, but needs the help of someone here to do so – again, if you can assist, email me ;-)

          Chips,
Pardon me — I’m the party pooper — but is this an actual endorsement by Clint Eastwood? If not, it’s just the sort of thing the wingnuts will latch on to. You know: “Obots falsify Eastwood endorsement!” etc. Besides, if Eastwood hasn’t endorsed Obama/Biden, he could make a lot of noise about being misrepresented.

LOVE the new ending, Chips!! Hope the NFL police don’t come after you.

I keep watching this ad. It’s really such an interesting set of visual and audio cues from start to finish. It’s very dramatic in every frame. He says it’s not a game. The image of the WH with protestors really threw me. That’s what makes it political along with the allusion to the partisan rancor on TV. The idea that we all pull together is a very Democratic – and very PBO – theme. It’s certainly NOT a GOP theme in any way, shape or form. Rove and crew are wetting their beds because it so obviously expresses the Democratic point of view of out of many, one, and HOPE.

Yeah, the ReThugs are apoplectic over this ad. I firmly, firmly, FIRMLY believe, to my core, that Clint Eastwood knew exactly what he was doing.

You can not tell me that Clint saw the final cut of that ad and didn’t know the impact that it would have. I’m not buying it. HE KNEW. And that’s what is eating away at the ReThugs. CLINT KNEW!!!

You and I are on the same wave, meta. I just re-watched that video 2x, and the wording is just too Obama-like :-D PBO has continuously used that same wording pre-election and afterward. Has anyone seen any indication from Eastwood himself in light of all the indignation from rethugs, as to whether his message is non-partisan, pro-Obama, or whatever? I’d really love to know what he thinks of the effect his commercial has had on everyone.

Good evening, TOD family. I have kept up with all the threads, but no time to post anything. We are in VA this week with our daughter. However, for the weekend we went on to northern VA to see friends and go to an annual Super Bowl party. Had an experience I want to share…..made me feel good.

I had to go to the grocery store (local Giant) to get ingredients to make my salad for the party. As I was going in, a man (holding a clip board) asked if I would sign a petition for George Allen. I said, “I don’t live here now, but even if I did, I wouldn’t sign your petition for George Allen.” I think he was so shocked he had no reply. Fine by me……..made my day!!! :)

    Wow…President Obama…won Big…without spending a dime on this ad…:-)

  20. February 6, 2012 at 10:22 pm

A little more on the ad.

It’s impossible to plumb Mr. Eastwood’s intent. One can read his statement to Fox several ways, as we all have. But, yes, whether or not he considers himself “affiliated” with PBO is almost irrelevant. The ad was what it was. They could’ve gone in any number of different directions with the ad, but instead made the ad we saw last night. No, it didn’t have “Obama/Biden 2012″ at the end. But it didn’t have to. There was one political party that wanted to save Detroit, and with it millions of jobs and possibly the world economy, and one party that wanted to let the industry go bankrupt and be swept up in a Bain-type “reorganization”. Who was on which side is well known. And if those on the “let it die” side had had their wish, last night’s ad would not have been made. The ad speaks in a way that statements after the fact don’t and can’t.

    • February 6, 2012 at 10:27 pm

Nail (or rethugs), meet the hammer.

And if those on the “let it die” side had had their wish, last night’s ad would not have been made.

    • 75 vero804
      February 6, 2012 at 10:33 pm

I really do appreciate you and everyone else’s outlook on the ad. I liked the ad. And I guess you summed up my main point as well – Eastwood is almost irrelevant to the ad, IMO. I guess I cannot get passed my side-eye view of Eastwood. He is a right-winger in my book, who had some kind of scheduling issue and couldn’t go get an award from the WH given to him by POTUS. So, he landed on my shitlist. And no Super Bowl ad can erase him off my list.

But alas, that should not deflect from the impact of the ad. I hope the people of MI have wised up from their rightward swing from the midterms and will land back on our side. Romney is not his father.

      • February 6, 2012 at 10:37 pm

I too, vero, I too. What were they thinking in 2010 ?

I hope the people of MI have wised up from their rightward swing from the midterms and will land back on our side.

        • 77 vero804
          February 6, 2012 at 10:49 pm

Quite frankly, I think the Democrats had a very incoherent message leading up the midterms and didn’t give a strong and compelling reason to keep them in power. Folks were feeling so frustrated and insecure that the “sky is falling” Republicans played into the insecurities of the American people at that time, very slyly. Then all year the emoprogs were screaming that POTUS has failed us, the Democratic Party is weak, and blah blah blah. It was a bad scene for our side.

    • February 7, 2012 at 3:34 am

I didn’t see the ad; as of yet I did not even rerun it from this site.

However, I did read the transcript.

To me it looked like it was lifted verbatim from a PBO speech.

Perhaps it’s about this – just received via email:

“I wrote something for our blog about our decision to support Priorities USA, the Super PAC that can help neutralize the avalanche of special-interest spending to defeat President Obama. Every supporter should read it; it’s pasted below.

I just want to add something for you specifically about your role in all of this.

We decided to do this because we can’t afford for the work you’re doing in your communities, and the grassroots donations you give to support it, to be destroyed by hundreds of millions of dollars in negative ads.

        It’s a real risk.

In 2011, the Super PAC supporting Mitt Romney raised $30 million from fewer than 200 contributors. Ninety-six percent of what they’ve spent so far, more than $18 million, has been on attack ads. The main engine of Romney’s campaign has an average contribution of roughly $150,000.

That’s why it’s up to us — the grassroots organization — to win this election where we have the real advantage, and that’s on the ground. More than 1.3 million Americans have already donated. Our average donation is $55, and 98 percent are $250 or less.

The stakes are too important to play by two different sets of rules. If we fail to act, we concede this election to a small group of powerful people intent on removing the President at any cost.”

And, my response to Jim Messina:

More than once, and without an ounce of hyperbole, you’ve seen me write that what the Republic faces in 2012 is the gravest threat since 1861. It’s not a joke. It’s real, and it’s being funded by the Koch Brothers and others. We know it. We know SCOTUS enabled it with Citizens United. We are not going to allow them to win. No way. No how. Ever.

I wrote something similar in one of rootless_e’s articles over at TPV. Since the GOP forced Newt to stop running the Bain ads, Romney has been lying like there was no tomorrow. The primaries give him a perfect platform. The Dem Super PACs need to pick up where Newt stopped and hammer him about Bain and his offshore accounts. However the rich guys on the left don’t seem to be contributing that much. We need people like Soros, Buffet, Gates, Spielberg etc. to step up and match Adelson and the Kochs.

  24. February 6, 2012 at 10:38 pm

Vice President Joe Biden went after two Republican presidential candidates during a stop in Tallahassee Monday, casting Mitt Romney as a cold, bean-counting businessman and Newt Gingrich as something a bit worse. From the pool report:

“Mitt Romney says the best way to deal with foreclosures is to let everything hit the bottom.” (The crowd muttered loudly) “No, no, no, no – by the way, from purely a dollars and cents standpoint, he could get ready to argue that, that’s right out of the business school manual. But guess what? We’re not reorganizing and purchasing companies, we’re trying to rebuild a country.”

He said the GOP candidates are showing true colors in debates and that the DNC ought to sponsor 19 more so the voters can see them. …

“Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, I think they’re slightly different, and I mean this sincerely. I think it’s more about obstructionism for them. For them, their actions say what they really believe … These are the same guys who are calling the president a ‘food stamp president’ – a thinly veiled, I don’t know what it is, but it’s inappropriate. It’s inappropriate.”

TALLAHASSEE — Vice President Joe Biden was on his way to prom years ago when he saw his father pacing outside.

Had something happened to Mom? Was something wrong?

His father, it turned out, had just returned from the bank, where he was turned down for a loan to pay for Biden’s education at the University of Delaware. “I’m so ashamed,” Biden recalled him saying.

The anecdote, delivered in a speech Monday to students at Florida State University, was used to promote President Barack Obama’s new college affordability plan — which would reward states for keeping costs low.

    Eastwood’s comments on commercial:

Eastwood, a longtime Republican who now describes himself as a libertarian, told Fox News on Monday he was “certainly not politically affiliated with Mr. Obama.”

The ad was meant as a message “about job growth and the spirit of America. I think all politicians will agree with it,” Eastwood said, according to a transcript on Foxnews.com.

“If Obama or any other politician wants to run with the spirit of that ad, go for it,” the actor added.

      • February 6, 2012 at 11:47 pm

Oh, I think he knows Theo. ;) I would be surprised to hear that this ad wasn’t made with that in mind. Obama Campaign To Step Up Super PAC Fundraising

The Obama campaign announced on Monday night that it will launch a new fundraising campaign for unlimited money Super PACs supporting Democrats, concluding that despite the president’s opposition to the Supreme Court decision that sprang them into existence, they can’t afford to avoid them.

With Republican Super PACs, including Karl Rove’s Crossroads, Mitt Romney’s Restore Our Future, and Newt Gingrichs Winning Our Future, raising tens of millions of dollars — one donor alone, Sheldon Adelson, donated more than $10 million to the pro-Gingrich group — the campaign told supporters in an e-mail that they had to act.

“With so much at stake, we can’t allow for two sets of rules in this election whereby the Republican nominee is the beneficiary of unlimited spending and Democrats unilaterally disarm,” Obama campaign manager Jim Messina wrote.

I’ve been following the FAA bill. Some on the left are saying that the Senate dems “caved” to republican union-busting efforts and Ed Schultz said the same thing. I read about the bill, and heres what I found regarding unions: “Several labor issues over the years have frustrated efforts to pass a bill. Most recently, a Republican-drafted bill that cleared the House last spring included a provision that would have overturned a National Mediation Board ruling allowing airline and railroad employees to form a union by a simple majority of those voting. Under the old rule, workers who didn’t vote were treated as “no” votes.

The labor provision, which was opposed by the Democratic-controlled Senate, became the principal issue holding up the bill. A compromise reached two weeks ago by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, allows the mediation board’s rules to stand, but it also toughens some lesser requirements that must be met in order to hold a union organizing election.”

The National Mediation Board rules are still intact, and the only difference I can see is a toughening of “lesser” requirements related to union elections. Am I wrong in thinking that the changes don’t “bust up” the rights of unions affiliated with the airline industry to bargain collectively? Maybe someone here could explain exactly what is in the bill that is considered “union busting?” I’m hoping this isn’t something that some dems will take and run with to turn other dems against the president. I’ve already seen some tweets calling on PBO to veto the bill.

    • February 6, 2012 at 11:21 pm

It was a compromise- now employees have to have 50% of the vote to form a union.

The House had been holding out for absolutely NO unions.

      Ed schultz is a fool!

        February 6, 2012 at 11:59 pm

Thanks, Jovie. I knew there’d be someone at TOD who could clarify for me why some dems are ginning up the dems “caved” nonsense again.

      • 159 ML
        February 7, 2012 at 12:05 am

I simply do not understand when “compromise” became a dirty word that means “caving in”. My two children think this is how government runs – with people refusing to compromise at all. They don’t remember when probably 80% of the stuff just got done and people argued about the 20%. And by people I mean Republicans and the far left who want us all to behave like Republicans.

  33. February 6, 2012 at 11:23 pm

I think ppl sometimes do not hold unions accountable. I am a union person, but some of their rules have to revised with the changing times. Times are different from when the union beging. they also have to make adjustments.

  34. February 6, 2012 at 11:24 pm

We really need a ROFLMAO emoticon in WordPress.

  35. February 6, 2012 at 11:24 pm

Then you also have to hold unions members accountable for their over whelming support of the gop. this is a lesson learned.
