Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said in a statement Monday that the House will extend the payroll tax cut for the rest of the year without pay-fors.
Because the president and Senate Democratic leaders have not allowed their conferees to support a responsible bipartisan agreement, today House Republicans will introduce a backup plan that would simply extend the payroll tax holiday for the remainder of the year while the conference negotiations continue regarding offsets, unemployment insurance, and the ‘doc fix.’ If Democrats continue to refuse to negotiate in good faith, Republicans may schedule this measure for House consideration later this week pending a conversation with our members. Democrats’ refusal to agree to any spending cuts in the conference committee has made it necessary for us to prepare this fallback option to protect small business job creators and ensure taxes don’t go up on middle class workers.
It’s rich for them to say they will not consider one penny of tax increases or military spending cuts, and will only consider cuts that will most hurt the middle class – and then to accuse the Democrats of not being movable. Aren’t the Democrats the ones who offered $4 trillion in cuts last year, and the GOP refused? The GOP have no remaining credibility when it comes to spending cuts (and very little else).
Actually, I worry about this move mainly because the big money is really in the UI and DOC Fix part of this. By passing the payroll tax cut separately they neutralize the biggest sell and most devastating talking point against them with the public. Once most people in the middle class know that their taxes will not go up, they won’t get mobilized to call Congress if they don’t renew UI and the Doc Fix. Those two provisions only have a narrow constituency. This is actually strategically smart for the GOP. The Dems really want UI and the DOC fix. More importantly, the economy desperately still needs the stimulus from the UI (the most stimulative type of spending even more so than the payroll tax cut). I wouldn’t get too happy about this yet. I also would definitely not accuse the House GOP of caving. They are not at all caving. They are cutting their losses and hoping to still extract their pound of flesh to extend the other important provisions needed.
But they are caving as they are basically violating their core beliefs whether you look at it that way or not. Or do we just use the word ‘cave’ when it involves the democrats?
I have to agree with you, unfortunately. Since republicans put ideology and power before people and country, the only leverage democrats have against them is popular backlash. If it’s not there, it’s back to extorsion.
REMEMBER…HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL AND TRUTH,JUSTICE AND EQUALITY SHALL WIN OUT. WE ARE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY..THE REPUBS. ARE GOING TO SEP OFF A CLIFF…AND THEY WON’T BOUNCE!…SPLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!…:)
UI and the doc fix is the reason why there has not been a compromise. I doubt that they will just pass the payroll tax cut. If a bill pass it will include doc fix, UI, and payroll tax cut. The GOP back itself into a corner.
I say we launch a massive campaign, letter writing, e-mailing, tweeting, facebooking, phone calling, an faxing, to members of Congress demanding the extension of UI. I am writing my members of Congress to urge them to fight hard on this and, if push comes to shove, to introduce bills to demand that members of Congress should not be paid until they pass legislation aimed at helping the unemployed people. People without jobs, including some in my family, are hurting. UI is the only thing keeping them above water. I am sick and tired of Republicans playing with people’s lives in order to advance their sick political agenda.
It’s called right wing damage control. The only problem is that they are in a hot ‘desert’ stand in hot sand up to their scrotums. A bit uncomfortable I’d say.

“Back when we first launched Let’s Move! — a nationwide initiative to end our childhood obesity epidemic — in the back of my mind, I wondered whether it was really possible to make a difference.
I knew how serious this problem is. Nearly one in three of our children are overweight or obese, at risk for illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer that cost our economy billions of dollars each year to treat.
I also knew the conventional wisdom on this issue. There’s the assumption that kids don’t like healthy food, so why try to feed it to them? There’s the belief that healthy food doesn’t sell as well, so companies will never change the products they offer. And there’s the sense that this problem is so big and entrenched that no matter what we do, we’ll never be able to solve it.
But over the past two years, we have seen a new conversation in this country about how we live and eat and how that affects the health and well-being of our kids. Since we launched Let’s Move!, people from every corner of this country who care about our children’s futures have stepped up and proved the conventional wisdom wrong…”

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey lawmakers gave their blessing to legalizing gay marriage for the first time Monday as the state Senate passed a bill that would allow nuptials for same-sex couples, despite Gov. Chris Christie’s insistence that he will veto such legislation.
The Senate’s 24-16 vote sends the bill to the Assembly, which is expected to pass it on Thursday
I don’t think it had been posted here yet – so many thanks for posting. This is great news. Clearly, CPAC and the birth control nontroversy only sent more folks to PBO’s corner!
Encouraging news. I took the time to look at all the crosstabs on the PPP site. What I like is that it indicates a serious divide within the GOP, between Tea Party/evangelicals (pro Santorum) and moderate republicans (pro Romney). So, a Romney nomination may deflate the TeaParty/evangelical vote, at least a little, while a Santorum nomination could motivate “some” moderate republicans to vote for democrats.
A concern: I didn’t see any numbers about the independant vote in a Obama/Santorum match-up. Independants have soured on Romney because of all this talk about taxes, Bain, etc. But how will they respond to Santorum? Remember many of them are low-info voters. Santorum will try to hide his radical religious views and will tap into white resentment. There’s an argument to be made that the more they come to know him and COMPARE him to President Obama, the more they will see that Santorum is NOT presidential material. But you can never be sure of anything. I hope the campaign is working 24/7 on this; I suspect they had not put as much energy in preparing for Santorum as they had in preparing for Romney or Huntsman.
I read this on a right-wing site. I did a little editing of the name-calling and other than that it’s in tact and what we say here all the time. I think a few of these folks on the right are starting to understand our PBO. Let’s hope it’s too few, too little and too late.
“Greetings all; first post, long time viewer. One of the things that conservatives waste time on is trying to understand liberals in general and Obama in particular. People in their right mind simply cannot understand how…(PBO)…thinks and behaves. It is like listening to a serial killer explain life and death.
Obama thinks 6 steps ahead of most other people. He plays us all and eventually gets what he wants. The goal here is to energize his base, position himself as reasonable, and maneuver the country into a single payer system.
The reason they can’t understand him is because his level of cognition is developed so significantly beyond their own. A mytihic-literal thinker does not have the cognitive capacity to understand the integral thinker – or the checkers-player to understand the 11th-dimensional chess player…
I think it has more to do with the fact that they’ve bought into this idea that President Obama only got through school because of Affirmative Action and his teachers handing him undeserved As, that alllll he did was community organizing and he can’t get through a three word sentence without the aid of a teleprompter. This is comforting to them because they can’t fathom that our president is smart and savvy. In short, they underestimate him and are so blinded by their hate and fear that they don’t think and act in a rational manner.

Agreed. I also think that they have tried and are trying to saddle PBO with everything that was true of W. Bush. They know liberals, for good reason, believed he was not very smart but they don’t realize by doing that they are in essence agreeing with the liberal critique of Bush. For example it was Bush who implented TARP and the auto bailout which they blame PBO for. They thought the BP oil spill was PBO’s Katrina. Romney super PAC buying in 4 Southern states, re-upping in Mich. (UPDATED)
By ALEXANDER BURNS | 2/13/12 2:31 PM EST
The pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future is buying television airtime in the Super Tuesday states of Oklahoma, Tennessee and Georgia and pumping new money into Michigan ahead of its Feb. 28 primary, a source tracking the air war tells me.
The group is also reserving time in Mississippi, another conservative Southern state that does not vote until March 13.
The Southern tier of states where ROF is operating are all expected, to varying degrees, to lean toward Romney’s conservative opponents – Georgia especially, since it’s Newt Gingrich’s home state. Michigan is Romney’s native state and an extremely important battleground for his campaign.
ROF has already spent $232,640 in Michigan during the period between Jan. 25 and Feb. 13. But the week-to-week spending there dropped to less than $15,000 last week, the source said, and the new commitment of resources represents a re-escalation of the super PAC’s presence there.
