Steve Benen: …. As for why Michigan trees “are the right height” — unlike those other rascally states, where the trees are either too tall or too short — I’m yet to see someone explain what on earth Romney was talking about.

The Week

****

Mediaite: Here’s a moment in recent history that you’ll be hearing a lot about this week: In a 2008 speech given at Ave Maria University (a Catholic institution), current presidential hopeful Rick Santorum warned those gathered that “Satan has his sights on the United States of America.”

Michael Tomasky: …. Romney is just a coward. If he were half the man his father was, he would do something like what his father did in 1964, when he warned the party nominating Barry Goldwater that it was headed off the rails. (Today Goldwater, considered a fanatic in his day, would be maybe about the 15th-most-conservative Republican senator.) But all Romney cares about, all any of them care about, is getting and keeping political power. They can’t see the obvious paradox — that their lust for the White House is making them submit to all the wishes of a fanatical base, which is exactly what will keep them from winning the White House.

Remember that satirical Brecht line about it being perhaps easier for the government to dissolve the people and elect a new one? It’s not a new candidate the right needs. It’s a new electorate.

New GM plant will bring jobs from Mexico to Baltimore County

By the end of the year, motors for cutting-edge electric vehicles will be built from scratch in a sprawling $244 million plant under construction next to GM’s factory, now called General Motors Baltimore Operations.

About 189 workers will be hired to build the motors for a new generation of plug-in electric and hybrid vehicles, joining the 220 employees at the existing plant. The new plant’s first order of business will be building motors for the Chevrolet Spark, a five-door mini-car with a hatch that GM plans to roll out in 2013, according to a company spokeswoman.

He loves cars. He loves little lakes. But most of all he loves Lucy.

Oh Mitt. Nervous energy is not a good quality when running for President.

Hey now, Flip Flopney simply won’t stand for that kind of talk!

How dare you characterize his, er, short-comings to some diseased vulgarity. I warn you, we’ll have to make the butler reduce your monthly stipend, peasant!

Frank Schaeffer was one of the guest on Rev Al’s show. IMO, often times a person who has been in the belly of the beast (figure of speech) and actually helped to create the beast can give the best analysis of the actual agenda. Schaeffer knows exactly the mindset of many far right evangelicals, of which Rick Santorum is one. Schaeffer made it clear that Santorum is NOT playing politics. The stuff he spews is exactly what he believes. He and those such as Franklin Graham who are questioning the President’s religion know exactly what they are doing.

If you have a chance to watch that segment and you don’t have a weak stomach, I suggest you watch it.

The very evil picture that these two “christian” people are trying to paint President Obama as will rebound against them. They should both be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. I am disgusted with them. Never have thought much of Frankie Graham and I think NOTHING of Santorum.

    Happy ‘palindrome day’ TODers – 21022012 :)

Worth repeating …. several times ….

We need to see the largest turnout of women, ever, in the history of the Republic on 6 Nov 2012. It is definitely time to reject, once and for all, any attempt by any institution – religious, governmental, whatever – to control women. Period.

Pelosi announced that Democrats will hold a hearing Thursday featuring the woman, Sandra Fluke, a law student, who was not allowed to be part of that panel.
Some Republicans–including the presidential candidates– are trying to frame getting contraception for women covered through the new Obama health care law as an issue of religious liberty.
But the reality is–as women who use birth control know–there is a lot more to the story.

WASHINGTON–Back from a long Presidents Day weekend in Aspen, First Lady Michelle Obama is headlining a major donor fund-raiser lunch here Tuesday before hosting a Blues evening at the White House.
Mrs. Obama is heading to Cincinnati and Louisville on Thursday for more fund-raising in critical battleground turf. On Wednesday, Mrs. Obama will be on a conference call for “Women for Obama,” where she will speak to some 1,000 house parties across the nation.
The Tuesday high dollar fund-raiser–which was not on Mrs. Obama’s original schedule– is for an Obama “Women and Technology” event, an Obama 2012 spokesman said. The lunch is at the Mayflower Hotel with the tab ranging from $5,000 to $20,300 for those who want seating or picture perks. The base price is $1,000. Mrs. Obama’s last fund-raising swing–which was put on her schedule–was at the end of January in California.

Market up 63% since PBO took office, first time since May ’08 and up 98% since March 2009 bottom. Through 401K, retirement income, etc, 54% of Americans own stocks. Market enthusiasm is the next indicator to watch and conditions in Greece and the Euro directly impacts that issue.

Horses in the Chicago Police Department’s Mounted Unit assigned to crowd control during the NATO and G-8 summits will be outfitted with “riot gear,” just like the officers riding them and those on the ground facing off against protesters.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration is soliciting bids for “police horse riot gear and training aids” in preparation for the May 19-21 summits at McCormick Place expected to shine an international spotlight on Chicago.

The solicitation specifically requests: leather nose guards — 22 inches long and five inches wide — with “impact-absorbing foam”; clear, wrap-around visors to protect the horse’s eyes; 17-inch-long rear leg shields and 11-inch-long front leg shields, both made of “high-impact plastic” and soft foam; and “training aids” for horses, including a “crowd control training ball set.”

The mounted unit has 30 horses, 30 officers and an annual budget of nearly $2.7 million.
