welcome ‘home’ willard

United Auto Workers union member Pat Peralta holds a sign during a protest rally against Mitt Romney, who is making a campaign stop at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, February 24

mlive.com

****

You can watch Willard’s speech in the PACKED stadium here (12:0 ET)

****

Watch how those 65,000 people can barely control their excitement in anticipation of Willard’s arrival:

And watch how they erupt when he appears – Mitt Mania!

****

Freep.com: It won’t be hard to fit 1,200 members of the Detroit Economic Club into 65,000-seat Ford Field for today’s speech by GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

What will be hard is making it look like Romney isn’t speaking to a nearly empty stadium.

The Romney campaign and the Economic Club think they’ve solved the problem. The guests will be seated at one end of the playing surface, roughly between the end zone and the 30-yard line, while Romney will speak from a stage in front of them.

More here

Thanks for the Mitt pic Lamh!

This is thrilling to watch our supporters stand up and be counted, thanking PBO for his hard work. He took so much grief for this bold decision and he is ONCE AGAIN VINDICATED.

For Willard to be holding his event in a 65,000 capacity stadium goes under the heading: what WERE they thinking? Bet you’ll hear very little about the lack of crowd, enthusiasm from the MSM.

P.S. Thanks for the pic,, Chipsticks,: it boosted my spirits considerably.

    • February 24, 2012 at 12:38 pm

Yes, this will be blown up by the media as an enthusiastic crowd coming to hear their hero, Mittens Romney, the Resolute! The media is completely complicit in this farce of a campaign.

    • February 24, 2012 at 1:27 pm

By the very nature of who he was going to be talking to, it was going to be a small crowd. It wasn’t an open to the public type of thing. Doing this in a venue like this is really, really dumb, and whoever thought it up should be fired. No, let me take that back, keep that person and have him/her do more of this. Plus, how much it must be costing the campaign to even rent this place.

      • 58 utaustinliberal
        February 24, 2012 at 2:07 pm

Actually, it was Romney himself who suggested this venue. He was supposed to have the event at another venue but changed his mind and made his team switch to a bigger avenue because he wanted to prove he could attract big crowds. So, in that estimation, Romney should fire himself. It was an EPIC fail.

Gooooooo UAW! How could you hate on workers?!?!?!? I just don’t get it. I truly don’t. Maybe my mindset is just too different to understand it. But how could you hate on your fellow American human beings working for a living?!?!?

    • February 24, 2012 at 12:22 pm

I don’t get the war on workers (unions) either, PolitcalJunkessa…any more than I get the war on women which has now started to incorporate the war on girls (the Girl Scouts).

      • 61 Dakota
        February 24, 2012 at 12:39 pm

That’s what they’re all about…war on everything. Attack, Attack, Attack, the only thing they know how to do! They are souless bullies with no capacity for working together or compromise. They think it makes them look weak. What it makes them look like however, is exactly what they are…a bunch of out of touch, raving lunatics.

      • February 24, 2012 at 12:40 pm

The only silver lining is that once you make everyone your enemy, you have no friends left. The GOP is busy alienating just about every constituency but the certifiably insane and the super rich. These groups are certainly noisy and powerful, but they don’t add up to a lot of votes.

      • February 24, 2012 at 1:32 pm

You don’t have to even clarify with (unions). The war on unions is a war against all workers. If they can get rid of unions they will be able to pay all workers less, give all workers less in benefits, and make sure no workers have long term security. The only thing preventing makng all workers slaves is the existence of unions.

  25. February 24, 2012 at 1:04 pm

Andrea Mitchell just did the Willard cover-up. Showed the close shot of Romney in front of his “crowd”, mentioned that he was in a 65,000 seat field, never mentioned that 99% of the stadium was empty. Ryan Lizza said something about it being difficult to fill a 65,000 seat stadium for an economic speech but still no widely available photos of the exciting event or any truth about the dismal number there.

  26. February 24, 2012 at 1:10 pm

it looks like theres more folks outside the speech- the union marchers- than inside the speech.

  27. February 24, 2012 at 1:21 pm

Mitt Romney: “Detroit shouldn’t just be the motor city of America, it’s got to be the motor city of the entire world.”

Oh please Mittens. Pres.Obama already put out that vision of American cars being sold all over the world. Stop copying him! Too late Mitt, you said you would have sold out Detroit, let it go bankrupt. Don’t try to sugar coat that turd.

      • February 24, 2012 at 1:38 pm

You know, the more I think about it, the more I realize they couldn’t possibly have thought they would significantly fill the stadium. Perhaps they were going for an iconic image of Mitt – son of one of Detroit’s own – standing in a stadium named for one of Detroit’s iconic automakers< (Have I used iconic enough yet?) But if so, it's backfiring big time.

        • 131 theo67
          February 24, 2012 at 2:01 pm

That probably was their intention, but they were short-sighted in not thinking about the optics. They love negative campaigning, but they never think that others will use their same dirty tactics. And they also didn’t think about the comparisons with President Obama and his ability to fill a stadium – easily.

          • 132 JoJothecat
            February 24, 2012 at 3:05 pm

Whoever thought that using this stadium was a good idea will be fired. I read in one the comments that the campaign wanted a venue to hold the 1200 they invited and the other place could hold only 500. So instead of finding a place that held, say 2000, they found a stadium that held 70K…what a duffus. Also, someone said there was “no other place to hold 1200 people”…really?

            • 133 L3
              February 24, 2012 at 3:57 pm

That isn’t true. There are plenty of places in downtown Detroit or even the suburbs that could hold 1200 people. Cobo Hall is huge but has smaller rooms with removeable partitions to accomdate any sized group. One of the more popular locations is the Renaissance Center which unfortunately for Willard is now owned by GM.

        • February 24, 2012 at 4:10 pm

I can’t buy him a son of Detroit. The man can’t even tell us why he loves the place. ‘The trees are the right height”? Who says that about a place they knew well in their childhood?

          • February 24, 2012 at 4:39 pm

I agree. He hasn’t lived here since he graduated from high school, I think. He doesn’t spend time, own a vacation home, etc. Detroit obviously doesn’t mean much to him. I was thinking that’s perhaps what the campaign was thinking since the pundits are all saying ‘Romney has to win his home state’. However his father was truly a Detroit guy.

          • February 24, 2012 at 4:39 pm

            …but he’s right about the trees ;)

Ok seriously, I know I know Mark “Da Dick” Halperin is a hack, but is there anyway to find out if he is actually being paid by the Romney campaign to jerk Romney off the way he does.

“Da Dick” is trying to claim that Romney “econ 101″ speech in Detroit, the one where the Romney campaign optics of not being able to fill stadium is terrible, that the local TV will all be about how “the local-boy-made-good who fancies cars speaking on the field of their beloved football stadium about his ideas for jobs and replacing Barack Obama…”

As Jovie predicted, the cable news media is doing a serious burial of CrowdFailGate Romney. They are now focusing on Syria and hardly mention Robney’s speech, which was a total fail. When they did mention the speech, CNN for example made sure to only show a close-up still photo (as close as possible without pushing Romney’s face out of the camera area). Thankfully, we have Twitter and Youtube at our disposal, so we can circumvent the dishonest Media and let people know the FACTS.

I’m no fan of the media, but rather than being motivated to protect Romney, they are probably more focused on Syria rather than Romney’s speech right now because, you know, people are being massacred in Syria, which seems to me would be more newsworthy than some lame speech Romney made in a half-empty stadium in Detroit.

Ann Romney Drives ‘a Couple of Cadillacs,’ Says Mitt

…Reporters have immediately jumped on the latter half of the comment as another example of Romney appearing “tone deaf” when making oblique references to his wealth among voters. (Think “I like being able to fire people” or “corporations are people, my friend.”) “Politically, I don’t there’s anything wrong with mentioning your wife drives a Cadillac. But it’s a little riskier if you mention she drives ‘a couple,'” writes The Hill’s Christian Heinze. “For the love of Pete,” tweets Politico’s Ben White. “… It would be better for that campaign if he didn’t speak.” “PROBLEM” adds Politico’s Dylan Byers. But let’s all take a step back. It could have been worse! Something like, “Ann used to drive two Cadillacs but that was years before we hired her a private driver.” Still, expect to hear the political hay over this little flap for at least a news cycle or ten…

Besides this being obviously good for democrats, you know what makes me happy? Journalists will probably stop associating Joe Biden with “gaffes” now that Romney is becoming the poster boy for political malpractice.

I’ve always cringed when journalists are condescending when talking about Joe Biden. Joe’s supposed “gaffes” are more often than not simply a case of being too frank and plain spoken. Joe Biden is a brilliant man and a man of integrity. And he is completely in touch with the reality of ordinary americans. Joe Biden would have been a good president.
