the united auto workers: “four more years”

Text of speech here

A person holds up four fingers for four more years as President Barack Obama speaks at the United Auto Workers conference in Washington, Feb. 28

… with UAW President Bob King

“I keep on hearing these same folks talk about values all the time. You want to talk about values? Hard work: That’s a value. Looking out for one another: That’s a value. The idea that we’re all in it together and I’m my brother’s and sister’s keeper: That’s a value.”

Good morning from the very sunny Island of Jamaica!

Chips did you by chance see Phylicia Rashad on CNN this morning? She was amazing. She had me screaming that’s right, tell it like it is. Solidad didn’t know what hit her so she just giggled her way through the segment.

I wish to MSM would answer the rightwing nut jobs instead of allowing them to run off at the mouth.
The correct answer to the low employment rate is: Tell congress pass the president’s jobs bill…buttheads.

He got digs in on ALL OF THEM. He’s to the point where he doesn’t give a shit anymore — accuse him of ‘campaigning’. Who the hell cares? What have they done? Governed? Hardly.

Whether the TOD family needs it or not, this kind of fire-y passion inspires the American people. For good or ill, they see that as strength and PBO has found just the right chord.

        God, I love this President.

Hello!!! Behold the master! Go ahead Yardam! Tell it like it is!

I loved Mr. King’s introduction of the president, and especially that quote of Dr. King about when you really get to know the real measure of a person. You get to know what a person is truly made of not in times of comfort but in times of adversity and crisis. President Obama has faced so many adversities and crises but he has never lost his nerve. He is, as the saying goes, “steady as a rock.”

  20. February 28, 2012 at 11:55 am

Saw a Santorum campaign rep on MSNBC when I first turned my tv on trying to reinterpret what Santorum said about Education yesterday. Talk about reinterpret! That is definitely what he was doing about what PBO said and even was thinking. No thanks! It won’t work!
PBO just ended his UAW speech and I wonder if he will lose his voice. He was so strong!

    • February 28, 2012 at 12:39 pm

      This is what Santorum does:

      1. Tell a lie or say something completely over the top and ridiculous
      2. MSM/blogs go wild with, “WTF?”
      3. Santorum does interview where he “clarifies” what he said.
      4. Santorum then gets mad that he’s being questioned about things he said. Characterizes it as a “liberal media attack”
      5. Rinse and repeat.

What a difference a decade makes on income inequality
By Steve Benen – Tue Feb 28, 2012 10:05 AM EST.

For much of the Obama era, issues such as income inequality have been deemed largely off limits by the right. The problem, according to many conservatives, isn’t the growing gap between rich and poor, or the emergence of a new Gilded Age, but rather, talking about these issues in public. Maybe, the argument goes, if we ignore the societal dilemma, it’ll just go away.

But it wasn’t too terribly long ago that Republicans felt this was at least a problem worth considering. Our pal James Carter flagged a fascinating item from 2002, written by one of the Republican presidential candidates for an academic journal.

Attorney General Holder Names Tony West Third In Command At DOJ

Tony West, who has led the Justice Department’s Civil Division since April 2009, was named today acting associate attorney general.

West, as the third in command at Justice, will replace Thomas Perrelli, Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. announced. Perrelli, who managed the Washington office of Jenner & Block, recently announced his plans to leave DOJ.

Holder today also named Stuart Delery the acting assistant attorney general for the Civil Division. West and Delery were not immediately reached for comment this afternoon.

“Tony and Stuart have served the department with professionalism, integrity and dedication, and both bring a wealth of experience to their new positions,” Holder said in a prepared statement. “I’m confident they will provide invaluable leadership and will play a critical role in furthering the department’s key priorities and fulfilling its traditional missions.”

so true–unions are the microcosm of the nation, working hard together, watching out for each other, helping out, and staying strong against all foes. when you look back to the years when workers fought and died for the right to collective bargaining, and think how the multinational companies are trying to weaken unions by outsourcing jobs, it’s clear why pbo has stood with the unions and organized labor. not just a democratic value–it’s an american value.

Yeah, but folks in Michigan do this all the time – both Democrats and Republicans. I think it happens in many states that have open primaries. I don’t know how many Dems will show up to vote for Santorum. But regardless, Romney shouldn’t be in a position where it would even matter. Just goes to show how poorly he’s doing even in his home state.

Hey, effing Mitt didn’t have a problem doing it, and now he’s all huffy. He said he took ‘any opportunity to vote against Clinton or Ted Kennedy and I did it”. And it actually WAS a little dishonest in MA because he had to register as an independent. In MI there are no registered party affiliations and they just ask for the ballot they want (at least that’s what I heard from one of the reporters this morning. If Michiganders say I’m wrong, I’ll accept that).

Chevrolet at the Geneva Motor Show

New models, exciting concepts and the latest in infotainment technology are the hallmarks of Chevrolet’s presence at the 82nd International Geneva Motor Show, which opens to the public on March 8, 2012.

The major attraction on the Chevrolet stand in Hall 1 is the Cruze station wagon, which will make its world debut. Two youth concept cars – the Code 130R and Tru 140S – make it to European shores for the first time while the future of on-board infotainment will be displayed in the form of Chevrolet MyLink.

    Tonight Doesn’t Really Matter
    by BooMan
Tue Feb 28th, 2012 at 01:05:45 PM EST

It seems like everyone is trying to create drama. Here’s Matt Dowd, responding to a query from George Stephanopoulos: “What happens if Rick Santorum wins Michigan tonight?”

“If Rick Santorum wins tonight it’s the equivalent of a 9.0 on a Richter scale. I mean it is going to shake Washington, it’s going to shake Republican establishment it’s just going to shake things to their very core,” Dowd told me. “And I think what you’re going to see are the conversations that have been going on behind quiet doors saying we need another candidate in this race.”

I think this is a bit of hyperbole. At the same time, I don’t think it’s wrong exactly. Let me explain. As things look right now, Romney is going to win in Arizona tonight, probably quite comfortably. And he’s either going to win narrowly or lose narrowly in Michigan, which will mean very little either way in terms of delegates awarded. Whether Romney nets a dozen delegates or loses a dozen, it can’t possibly matter much in determining the outcome of the overall race. Except, perhaps, if the outcome of tonight’s elections significantly changes people’s perceptions. But, is that likely to happen?

I heard if Romney loses he will just call it unfair and voter tampering with Dems crossing over and all will go on. What I have thought about is Ron Paul’s voters merging with Romney as they have become such good friends and giving MR more power in the GE. Seems like a weird team up but the attacks have not gone against Romney from the Paul camp. I also heard that Rand may be offered a spot and that could persuade a father to do things he may not usually consider. I think if Ron Paul endorsed Romney my RP supporting brother could be influenced to vote for Mitt. I don’t know though as Mitt keeps talking like a Neocon which is the total opposite of Paul’s war views. Anyone have thoughts on the Ron Paul Mitt Romney connection?

Resurgence Of GM’s Design, Led By Ed Welburn, Has Not Gone Unnoticed

Secret service agents flanked both sides of the vehicle. A crowd of reporters snaked behind a rope about 20 feet away. Camera flashes documented every possible angle of the meeting taking place.

It was a strange setting for a private conversation.

But sitting alone inside a 2013 Chevy Malibu, President Obama and Ed Welburn had just that last month during the Washington Auto Show.

The conversation came at the end of a short tour, in which Welburn, the vice president of global design at General Motors, introduced the president to seven of the company’s latest vehicles, a lineup made possible by Obama’s fiscal bailout of the nation’s reeling auto industry only three years ago.

Inside the Malibu, Obama offered Welburn a candid assessment of all that had transpired in the meantime.

“He let me know how proud he was with the work that I do, and I was just like, ‘Wow,'” Welburn said. “At the very last vehicle, he did ask me, he just remarked that the design of GM cars has gotten so much better in the past few years.”

Their meeting was notable for obvious reasons, namely it was a very public connection between the president and a high-ranking auto industry executive at a time the federal auto bailout is under considerable scrutiny.

But it was notable for another reason, one unmentioned by the horde of reporters standing only 20 feet away, and perhaps one unnoticed by Obama and Welburn themselves. On the Jan. 31, the eve of Black History Month, the first African American president was meeting with the first African American to lead design at a car company; Welburn leads the biggest in the world.

    A bit of sociological research:

The rich really are different from the rest of us, scientists have found — they are more apt to commit unethical acts because they are more motivated by greed.

People driving expensive cars were more likely than other motorists to cut off drivers and pedestrians at a four-way-stop intersection in the San Francisco Bay Area, UC Berkeley researchers observed. Those findings led to a series of experiments that revealed that people of higher socioeconomic status were also more likely to cheat to win a prize, take candy from children and say they would pocket extra change handed to them in error rather than give it back.

Because rich people have more financial resources, they’re less dependent on social bonds for survival, the Berkeley researchers reported Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. As a result, their self-interest reigns and they have fewer qualms about breaking the rules.

    • February 28, 2012 at 2:45 pm

I don’t know, I just have a difficult time believing that just because someone is rich they are also ethically challenged. This looks more like someone gathering evidence to promote a theory. It may be that there are a number of people who are rich who also have bad manners and are more motivated by greed. It might be that the greed itself is what motivated them to become wealthy, even using cheating and stealing to become wealthy. Wealth does not equal greed.

      • February 28, 2012 at 2:56 pm

The article itself indicates that the correlation isn’t absolute. Here are the final two grafs:

But rather than vilify the wealthy, Piff said, he hopes his work leads to policies that help bridge the gap between the haves and have-nots.

Acts as simple as watching a movie about childhood poverty seem to encourage people of all classes to help others in need, he said.

As with all things human, things are a bit more complicated than at first glance.

Pollack on Santorum and the Disabled
    By Ed Kilgore

One of the nastiest of Rick Santorum’s recent attacks on his fellow-citizens who do not share his particular religio-cultural affinities is his claim that liberals support prenatal testing in order to make it easier to dispose of people with disabilities. My friend Harold Pollack, a professor of social service administration at the University of Chicago who is extraordinarily knowlegeable about the practical implications of health care policies, responded with a sort of quiet heat in a New York Times op-ed:

“One of the things that you don’t know about ObamaCare,” Mr. Santorum said, is that it requires “free prenatal testing … Why? Because free prenatal testing ends up in more abortions and, therefore, less care that has to be done, because we cull the ranks of the disabled in our society.” Mr. Santorum’s comment echoed Sarah Palin’s famous charge during the health care reform debate: “My parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s ‘death panel’ so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their ‘level of productivity in society,’ whether they are worthy of health care.”

Oh boo hoo. Ann Romney thinks the media loves President Obama and is mean to her husband. So much so that she might think about kicking some of the press bus.

” At that luncheon, Ann Romney also complains about the media treatment of her husband. “All of us in this room know the media loves Barack Obama. They don’t want anyone who has a chance of defeating him,” she says.

Speaking openly about how it was “getting harder and harder to be cheerful,” she laughingly says, “I am so mad at the press [that] I could just strangle them! And, you know, I think I’ve decided there are going to be some people invited on the bus and some people just aren’t going to be invited on the bus.”

    Consultants Feast on Mitt
    By Ed Kilgore

As Walter Shapiro explained in the last issue of the Washington Monthly, one of the sources of the corrupting power of money in politics is from within the campaigns themselves, as consultants rip off candidates and then force them to hire other consultants to raise the money to pay them. Some campaigns are more vulnerable to this kind of vampire effect than others. But all the signs are that Mitt Romney’s campaign is a veritable blood bank. Here’s a report today from WaPo’s Dan Eggan:

Although many candidates hire firms created by former staff members, the extent of the Romney campaign’s reliance on such companies is unusual for a major presidential bid, experts say. Many of the firms Romney uses are run by former aides from his 2008 campaign.
The arrangement not only benefits several of those close to the former Massachusetts governor but also makes it harder to determine how he is spending his donors’ money, because salaries and other details about outside operations are kept under wraps. A big chunk of Romney’s outside operation is housed 20 miles north of Boston in an office building in Beverly, Mass., which is listed as the address for four firms doing work for the Romney campaign, disclosure records show.

Alum Tells Smith College to Quit Admitting Poors

In recent years, Smith College has been making efforts to improve its diversity. But one alum isn’t happy about this. She would like less diversity, please — and she’s written a letter warning Smith about the dire consequences of admitting fewer rich white ladies.

Anne Spurzem, class of ’84, wrote to the Smith College Sophian on Wednesday. Let’s just read the whole letter, shall we?

    To the Editor,

I am the president of the Smith Club of Westchester County. I enjoy reading the Sophian online because it helps me stay abreast of developments at the school.

I read your article about [President] Carol [Christ]‘s resignation and it had some interesting statistics. It mentioned the percentage increase in the population of women of color and foreign students. The gist of the article was that one of Carol’s objectives coming into the position was to increase diversity and the article gave statistics that showed that she did.

As someone who has followed admissions for many years, I can tell you how the school is viewed by students in Westchester and Fairfield Counties. First, these counties are some of the wealthiest in the country. The children have parents who are highly educated and accomplished and have high household incomes. The children are programmed from day one to get into Ivy League schools.
    ………………………………………………….
The people who are attending Smith these days are A) lesbians or B) international students who get financial aid or C) low-income women of color who are the first generation in their family to go to college and will go to any school that gives them enough money. Carol emphasizes that this is one of her goals, and so that’s why the school needs more money for scholarships or D) white heterosexual girls who can’t get into Ivy League schools.

    ……………………………………….
    -Anne Spurzem ’84

This is one of those cases where the letter-writer might not actually be aware she’s being awful. I can’t even completely tell what her point is — asides like “you have accomplished a noble social objective” make me think she sort of gets that maybe admitting people who are not white could be a good idea. But then she closes things out with comment about “great art” that implies Smith is consigning itself to a cultural wasteland by letting in Poors. Also, her breakdown of Smith undergrads these days is frankly insulting: many low-income students would probably be surprised to learn that they don’t give a shit where they go to school.

Texas Medicaid Director: 91 Percent Of Texans Will Have Insurance If State Implements Obamacare |

Texas Republicans are taking a hardline against implementing the exchanges in the Affordable Care Act and currently have “no plans to implement an exchange” in the state.

But during a House Public Health and Insurance Committees hearing yesterday, Billy Millwee, the State Medicad Director told lawmakers that “the percentage of Texans with health insurance will increase to 91 percent – up from 74 percent today – after the national health care law takes effect in 2014.” Texas — which has the highest rate of uninsured Americans — has the most to gain from implementing the law.
