President Obama shakes hands with a supporter after speaking about energy and energy independence at Nashua Community College in New Hampshire

****

Charles Pierce: NASHUA, N.H. …. After several months of watching the Republican primary process, I can’t tell you what a cool breeze it was to watch a politician who looks at a crowd and doesn’t see a group of potential marks (Romney), a collection of your fellow Elect marching with you through the dystopic Sinai that is America (Santorum), a gaggle of goldbugs (Paul), or the class of half-bright sophomores that N. Leroy Gingrich sees every time he looks anywhere but into the mirror.

Barack Obama is not stiff. He is not bristling with unbridled id. He grins. He kids people, even the people who faint at the beginning of his speeches …. He is relaxed about the job of politics. He is the only president of the United States – real or prospective – that I’ve seen in months.

…. He talks about the challenges Americans face, but he doesn’t do it in the gloom-ridden, stalactite-festooned, minor-key funeral mass context that the Republicans talk about them. He talks in terms of “boundless ingenuity” and “unbridled optimism.”….

Woot, even the ever-grumpy and ever-brilliant Charles Pierce sounds happy today!

Bloomberg: The number of Americans filing first-time claims for jobless benefits fell to a level matching a four-year low, more evidence the labor market is healing.

Applications for unemployment insurance decreased 2,000 in the week ended Feb. 25 to 351,000, Labor Department figures showed today…..

Firing is on a downward trend as employers gain confidence in the outlook for economic growth. A smaller number of job reductions also puts those companies in place to hire additional employees as demand picks up.

PPP: There might not be any state that better represents Barack Obama’s improved fortunes in the opening months of 2012 than Wisconsin. When we polled there in late October Obama’s approval was a 44/51 spread and he led Mitt Romney by only 3 points at 46-43, representing a much closer race than the state had in 2008. Now those numbers have shifted significantly, with Obama’s approval basically flipping to 52/44. And he now leads Romney 53-39, a 14 point margin that matches what he won against John McCain there.

Obama’s 14 point lead in Wisconsin matches a trend we’re seeing in both our national and state polling across the country right now: Obama/Romney is starting to look more and more like Obama/McCain, or even something more friendly to the President.

Ruy Teixeira (TNR): Judging from recent headlines, things are looking up for President Obama. The Republican presidential nominees have been serially embarrassing themselves; the White House communications department has successfully focused its messaging on jobs and economic fairness; and consumers are feeling ever more confident about the economy.

But it’s not just anecdotal evidence that suggests Obama’s re-election chances have improved – most of the polling data suggests the same. Obama has been running consistently ahead of his most likely challenger, Mitt Romney, in national polls – by an average of 4 points according to the Pollster.com website. Indeed, the closer you look at the numbers, the more reassuring the news: Obama, it seems, is well on his way to reconstructing the very coalition that elected him in 2008.

National Memo: In this Citizens United era of unregulated campaign cash, gay activists and donors are finding innovative ways to reward Barack Obama, who despite his equivocation on marriage equality is often lauded as the greatest friend to the LGBT community of any president in American history.

The reemergence of social issues on the presidential campaign trail, coupled with the reversal of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy that prevented gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military, has helped Obama improve his standing with this key segment of the liberal base, a vital source of campaign funds for any Democrat running a presidential campaign.

“This kind of Republican campaign has mobilized the community like I haven’t seen since 1992,” said David Mixner, a veteran progressive strategist Newsweek once called the most powerful gay man in America. “There’s a lot at stake. I have no doubt people will be involved in some way in Super PACs. You can count on the major donors of this community doing whatever they have to do to assist in the re-election of this president.”

How’s That Birth Control War Working Out For Ya?

    =========================================

And now, behold what the overreach has wrought. First, it helped lead to the likely loss of a GOP Senate seat. Olympia Snowe told the New York Times that a final straw leading to her decision to retire was the Blunt-Rubio amendment—which would do exactly what the Church demands, prohibiting pretty much any health coverage mandates for any employer who registered an objection on conscience grounds. Snowe was under huge pressure to support it, partly to give New England-moderate cover to Scott Brown, who has come out for the amendment and is already under withering attack for that from Elizabeth Warren.

    From NYT about tonight’s events:

Four separate events are planned for Mr. Obama’s New York jaunt, which together are expected to raise over $5 million for the president’s re-election campaign or for the Democratic National Committee.

His first stop will be a reception at the Manhattan home of Victor and Sarah Kovner, mainstays of the New York Democratic fund-raising world since the Clinton administration.

Sometime after 5 p.m., Mr. Obama is expected at a pair of events in the Flatiron neighborhood: A small dinner for 80 guests at ABC Kitchen, where tickets top out at $35,800 a person, and an elaborate gala for more than 900 supporters at ABC Carpet & Home, the furnishings store abutting the restaurant. Tickets for the larger event, which are no longer available, cost $1,000 each.

A little after 8 p.m., Mr. Obama will make his way to the home of Michael Smith, an interior designer who redid the Oval Office in 2010, and James Costos, an HBO executive, for a dessert reception. The event’s co-hosts have each contributed $38,500, while tickets for other guests were $10,000 apiece.

As of the end of January, Mr. Obama had raised over $150 million for his campaign.

So my wife’s family is coming to visit around Memorial Day—her dad and sister, and maaaaaaaaaaaaybe her brother and his wife. The father unit was posted at Edwards AFB in the 60s—and wifey was actually born a Californian. So we’re planning a daytrip to take the Edwards tour on June 1. Should be quite a trip down memory lane.

No surprise regarding the majority of Israeli Jews:

They need to get the fanatics out of their government and the whole world would be a much friendlier place for them and others.

And, regret the repeat, but we really need to understand that on 6 Nov 2012 we must definitively reject racisim, misogyny & xenophobia and put 1865 firmly behind us. We must begin building that America.

      Part of what he said:

Schaeffer argued that the current state-level legislative push, combined with faux outrage over contraception in Washington, DC leaves Mitt Romney high and dry in the general. He said “I think the Republicans have bought themselves a problem. They’ve painted themselves into a corner, and as I say again, the intellectual figures like Robert George, who have been so clever in getting the Roman Catholic bishops to have this trumped-up issue about civil liberties and religious civil liberties of the Roman Catholic church over contraception, these same guys who are putting bills in statehouses to force women to have ultrasounds before they can have an abortion, it’s all going to come to haunt them because they’ve made religion the center of the campaign, and of course that means religion is going to be an issue for Mitt Romney. So if they had all just been quiet about this, they would have had a chance with him. Now they’ve made it an issue and it will come back to bite them.”

  14. March 1, 2012 at 5:49 pm

Could the Chicago Tribune do a parody of their “Dewey defeats Truman” headline and print a paper “Romney defeats Obama” just for the President to use at his victory speech ?

Pelosi mocks GOP for launching Women’s History Month with Blunt amendment

    ——————————

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) hammered Republicans on Thursday for kicking off March — Women’s History Month — with a vote on legislation she claims would curtail women’s access to contraception.
    .
“Instead of talking about jobs … we’ve moved on to the Blunt amendment — a blunt, sweeping overreach into women’s health,” Pelosi said during her weekly press briefing in the Capitol.
    .
“This is a women’s health issue,” Pelosi said. “It’s a matter of conscience for each woman, her doctor, her husband, her family and her God to make her own decisions. And as a Catholic I support the right of a women to make that decision.”

    ============================

    WASHINGTON, DC

    Thursday, March 1, 2012

At her weekly legislative briefing, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said that Congress must work to lower oil and gas prices, blaming Wall street speculators for higher gas and oil prices.

The Minority Leader said the since President Obama has been in office, domestic oil drilling has quadrupled and the notion that inadequate U.S. production is “simply is not true.”

Yes they can. They accept tax payers dollars, they damn well can remove that ad. But we need to make the calls. When I called WMATA earlier today one of the reps told me that they are tracking the amount of communications from the Public they receive on this issue. They weren’t happy about it either but it takes folks calling in to make the difference. This has nothing to do with Freedom of Speech especially given the fact that the ad is in a public space that is supplemented due to tax payers dollars.

Two House Democrats on Thursday morning criticized radio host Rush Limbaugh for calling a law student who testified to Congress that contraceptives should be provided free a “slut” and a “prostitute.” The two members alternatively suggested that women boycott Limbaugh’s show, or call in and argue the point with him.

Limbaugh was widely quoted as saying Wednesday that Sandra Fluke, who testified before Congress in February, was a “slut” or a “prostitute” for calling for free contraception.

“She wants to be paid to have sex. She’s having so much sex she can’t afford the contraception,” Limbaugh was quoted as saying.

Rush L and his hateful …sexist words…calling women who use birth control..sluts and whores….

is this how many women and men view women who use birth control….are they upset that women can have sex when they choose to….

do they think that married women should not be able to control when they have children….

is that why Republican Women would vote for this bill instead of speaking out against the Blunt amendment….

is that why Catholic women are not speaking out in favor of contraception….esp when the majority of Catholic women use contraception…..

polls say that 61% of women support the President’s position on contraception…how could that be…when 98% of American women either use or have used birth control….

Hiya Donna, I’m SO relieved this has happened someone else – yikes, that sounds bad! Hopefully it’s an isolated glitch that they’ll sort out soon. Thanks Donna.

      • March 1, 2012 at 7:32 pm

It’s actually very scary and a terrible security breach. Hope OFA is taking this seriously.

I get my own info when I click.

    • March 1, 2012 at 7:10 pm

I see your page with MY contribution info. It is your fundraiser….my info is saved so anytime I donate on the computer that I am on now…all I have to is click an amount and hit submit.

      • March 1, 2012 at 7:14 pm

Thanks pm, I think anyone who is signed in automatically at OFA never saw those names when they clicked the link, they were only showing up for people not signed in. Thanks again, OFA occasionally get back to me with techy questions, so all of this might (I hope!) help.

I hate when Tweety gives those GOP ads free airtime under the guise of “demonstrating” for his show.

  33. March 1, 2012 at 7:12 pm

If ya didn’t already know, Patricia Heaton is a flaming wingnut. It’s one of the reasons I refuse to watch that show “The Middle” and I refuse to watch “Everybody Loves Raymond” and anything else Patricia Heaton is a star of. It’s my small way to stick it to the wingnuts and I find that I just can’t watch wingnuts celebrities without seeing their wingnuttery…same goes for singers, athletes, directors…whatever.

Anyhoo, if ya didn’t know, please check out ABL’s post about how Patricia Heaton totally went on a wingnut twitter spree about the Georgetown female student based on Rush-bo’s hate-speak.
Ya gotta check out the link ABL provides to Heaton’s twitter feed history.

after seeing it, you’ll feel like I do and never give Heaton’s films, tv, etc your time.

      Is she drunk ?

    • March 1, 2012 at 7:34 pm

once i read that she proudly supported GW, I said “hell, *uck no!!!” stopped watching reruns of Ray a long, long time ago. shame too cause I really loved it. :(

        March 1, 2012 at 7:40 pm

I never watched that show much when it was on. But the few times that I’ve caught a rerun, I couldn’t stand her character. Now I know why.

      • March 1, 2012 at 7:40 pm

yep, you and me both. wonder how the rest of the cast like her. I thought Romano and Brad (Ray and Robert) were both Dems, but I’m probably wrong.

    • 173 EDP4BHO
      March 1, 2012 at 7:44 pm

I knew that about her, and stopped watching “Raymond” for a short time, until I realized Ray Romano supports PBO, so now I watch it, and block her out altogether. Little skanky bitch. Who knew Hollywood could attract so many nutjobs- now we know since the rise of one Barack Hussein Obama.

Well I don’t watch the middle and won’t watch anything Patricia Heaton is on anymore.

  34. March 1, 2012 at 7:17 pm

any resident law buffs know if the Georgetown student has any course of action that involves ramming Rushbo’s word down his throat and maybe hurting his pocket a hell of a lot?

BTW, Miss Fluke put out a statement on Rushbo

We are going to need a crate of popcorn before the clown show concludes this summer.

The Republican Michigan Party apparently took a delegate away from Santorum. HeHeHeHeHe and he haz a sad:

    {Snippet}

Saul Anuzis, a member of the credentials committee, said the party’s rules were passed in early February to award the two at-large delegates to the statewide winner, but that a memo sent, in error, to the candidates’ campaigns said the delegates would be distributed proportionately.

“While we regret the error in the memo, it does not change what was voted on by the committee,” Anuzis said. “This is much to do about nothing.”

Santorum spokesman Hogan Gidley called the delegate situation “The kind of backroom dealing, political thuggery that just cannot happen in America.”

“We never thought the Romney campaign would rig the outcome of the election by changing the rules after the vote,” he added. “It’s very clear the rules were not followed by the establishment so they could prop up their hand-picked candidate.”

Suspicious package found at Limbaugh’s house. His brain?

So funny! (He’s pathetic, but what you wrote is hysterical. Surely this will be the turning point for Limbaugh – maybe they’ll finally stop using him as their brain!)

      • March 1, 2012 at 7:37 pm

I just don’t know Jacqueline, it seems like the viler he gets the more the right love him. If they were even semi-sane they’d be embarrassed by him.

How are you doing? And how is your son doing – such an amazing time for him.

Chips (er … Peggy … according to what I read upthread) – I am doing great. And tonight, even better, since for the first time in days I’m able to get on TOD without my computer’s acting all nuttified. Think I told you it wouldn’t settle in, kept scrolling. Whatever. I’m unstoppable now.

My son is doing superbly. This could be one of the best years (in his life) yet. Thanks for asking about him, sugar, and congrats on the 8M!

          • March 1, 2012 at 7:48 pm

Oh, don’t talk to me about nuttified computers, Jacqueline – I am an authority on the subject! (Without actually being able to fix them, of course).

Relieved to hear the site’s okay for you now, what a weird problem (although I mentioned to you something similar happened me before, but on every site I visited – bizarre).

Great to hear about your son, sounds like it’s a magical time for him, may the joy never end!

So Romney is in Ohio with Chris Christie. Does anyone care what the Governor of Jersey Shore thinks, or is this a way to see if Christie is golden to the GOP base enough to make him a viable VP candidate

Just a reminder everyone, C-Span have live coverage of PBO’s speech at 8:20 ET – will post heads up nearer the time.

I looked up his name and there was nothing. then looked up his name pulse “dead’ and stumbled upon a long list on “he’s dead” articles dating all the way back to 2003. Looks like every year they post something like this.

Why does Tweety keep playing Limbaugh’s disgusting rant? Once at the top of the hour was enough. He’s pretty much devoted the entire hour to it. Isn’t he essential promoting it?

Hello family, I’ve been here, but no time to post. My brother and I met today with Hospice and he signed the papers for our mother to begin receiving that care. Seems we are looking at 3-6 months. Of course, that’s a guesstimate……none of us have the promise of tomorrow. It is so sad, remembering how vibrant she once was.

As I needed to unwind and get my mind off my day, I ventured over to the orange site and found this: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/02/29/1069618/-What-Happened-Before-the-Rescue-of-the-Domestic-Auto-Industry?via=siderec. I scanned through some of the comments. All I saw were positive. Must confess I had never heard about this loan and frankly, never thought about that part of the industry needing to be in place.

tnmtngirl, blessings to your Mother, and to your family. Hospice care was a good and wise decision. We all have only so many years, then our time is done. If we have lived them well, if we have done all the good within our power, and leave the world a better place, we can rest in peace. Your Mother was part of the Greatest Generation. They all worked so selflessly together during the war years, they gave new meaning to collective energy, brought into being the group consciousness we were privileged to live in the 60′s. I pray your Mother’s last months and weeks are a sacred time for you all. God bless you.
