Foreign Policy: Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie’s recent article in Foreign Policy urges the Republican presidential aspirants to attack President Barack Obama more vigorously on his national security record. It’s a debate that the president and Democrats should welcome.

At the outset, leave aside the source of the counsel — listening to top aides to President George W. Bush proffer advice on foreign policy is a bit like hearing Mrs. O’Leary and her cow lecture about urban planning, after they’ve burned down Chicago.

The real problem with their advice is that it badly misreads both the president’s record and how the public assesses it. Americans may be sharply polarized on many issues, but they are relatively aligned on their confidence in Obama as commander in chief.

Bill Simmons: Welcome to the White House. Very proud to have the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, on the B.S. Report. This is your first podcast?

President Barack Obama: This is — well, I used to have my own podcast.

BS: What?

Obama: When I was U.S. Senator I was way ahead of the curve on the podcast thing.

BS: Really?

Obama: So, yes. I mean, I don’t think it had as many listeners as you.

BS: What was this podcast called?

Obama: I really don’t remember. [Laughter.] “A Podcast with Barack Obama.” Something like that. It was a catchy name.

NYT Editorial: Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum fought each other to nearly a draw in the Michigan primary and may actually have to split its delegates, but together they may have lost Michigan for their party by running campaigns that were completely disconnected from the lives of middle-class voters and pushed ever farther to the right margins of American politics.

…. If they listened to Mr. Obama’s fiery speech to the United Auto Workers on Tuesday, however, they heard a very different set of priorities: using government action to bring an entire industry back to life, raising taxes on the rich to avoid cutting programs for the poor, keeping insurance companies from cutting off the sick.

“Since when are hard-working men and women who are putting in a hard day’s work every day – since when are they special interests?” the president asked, addressing the contempt for labor demonstrated by the candidates and several Republican governors in the Midwest. The answer explains why Mr. Obama was up by 18 points over Mr. Romney in a recent Michigan poll, and why Republican leaders are worried about their presidential field.

USA Today: President Obama has a big advantage over any of his potential Republican rivals when it comes to issues involving health care and Medicare, a new poll shows.

The survey, taken by the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation, shows that 58% of Americans trust Obama to make the right decisions on the 2010 health care law and on Medicare. By contrast, only 43% trust his closest Republican rivals on those issues.

Dana Milbank: TAMPA, Aug. 30, 2012. Fellow Republicans, as I stand here tonight to accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States, I feel like a million bucks. Actually, I feel as if I am worth between 150 and about 200 some-odd million dollars. It is difficult to say with certainty because some of it is in the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Luxembourg and a Swiss bank account.

It is particularly meaningful to accept your nomination in Florida, a state where so many of my friends own so many things. The Miami Dolphins. The Orlando Magic. The Jacksonville Jaguars. The Doral country club. In fact, I have great friends who own some of Florida’s finest hotels, resorts, yachts and most valuable tracts of real estate, from Palm Beach to Naples.

To reach this day, I feel as if I have lived the American Dream. I grew up on the real streets of America, in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. My father, a public servant, scrimped and saved enough of his earnings as CEO of American Motors to send me to the Cranbrook prep school, France and Harvard Business School…..

You know, I wonder how many people care? He’s announcing his “findings” on a News Max site. Tells you ALL you need to know. If the guy would pull his head, out of his ass,and do HIS job rather than spend his time worrying so much about PBO….that would be nice. Crime all over AZ has gone DOWN, ACCEPT in Maricopa Cty…which is Joe’s turf. There are 40,000 felony arrest warrants on his desk, unattended to. He’s cost the taxpayers of this place millions fending off lawsuits against him. He’s left child abuse cases not investigated. I don’t give a good shit WHAT this idiot has to say.

        Exactly.
I seriously wonder about his mental state. He’s fixated on a fucking birth certificate. I don’t know if this is more drama to get attention or something but this is a total waste of time. It embarrasses our state (again)
If he “finds” the bc is not legit, it will cast his party in a negative light and take focus away from the presidential primaries.
If it’s found the bc is legit (as it will), it will look as though he wasted time and money on something that was supposed to be settled months ago.

This is a non winner for him.

My point exactly. However, Joe is trying to, once again, deflect the fact that he HASN’T DONE HIS JOB….to a more flammable conversation that appeals to his fellow batshit crazy followers.I saw a headline on AZ Central this morning that the exit polls taken after the primary the other day showed a softening and less important view of the immigration issues now. Joe is on the wrong side of this. Again. Everyone has moved on, but him.

Wow. the Kaiser foundation survey makes me VERY happy.

I loved everything about the UAW speech, but I was especially heartened to see Obama speak about ACA with the same passion as manufacturing. A recent poll of Latino voters showed that health care is very high on their list of priorities, right after jobs and the economy as I recall.

I’d like to see all of the leftie pundits tie ACA to job creation as well. It’s not just about what the bill can do for the country and all of its citizens, but that jobs will be created in an industry that gives back to the American people. And that lessening the burden on employers and small businesses will be a major factor in start-ups and entrepreneurs’ willingness to hire more people.

        March 1, 2012 at 4:30 pm

it is infuriating to me that this is called ‘poor judgement’. ‘poor judgement’ is when you wear a low cut dress to a funeral. ‘poor judgement’ is when you write a check against money that won’t be in your account till tomorrow. ‘poor judgement’ is taking your 10 year old child to a pg-13 movie he’s begging to see.

this is a federal judge–he is employed by the citizens of the united states to represent us in determining the motive and impact of someone’s acts. he is trained and trusted to take seriously the way our private acts impact the lives of others.

his behavior is vile and outrageous and unacceptable in a public servant. he needs to step down immediately, with an abject apology, or be removed from office.

I thought he had the wind in his back. haha but O/T I pray for our wonderful president and his family also VPOTUS. I pray the Lord be with all of them as they travel and serve our country. May the Lord continue to bless POTUS’ voice and give him the words and energy to make it through that schedule. Also surround him with love and support. I do so want some brilliant cartoonist to create an image of Willard the Resolute (in medieval armor) shaking from side to side, crumbling at the knees and bobbing his head yes and no at the same time.

Also we need to set up some kind of timing contest to see how fast Willard shifts positions on any issue. An hour is pretty fast. Any bets on half hour? 15 minutes. Office cafeterias around the country could set up pools with a nice pot going to the winner.

Ad War Update: Cranking Up The Fear

A paranoid and sinister spot from the Romney campaign:

The clip insinuates that Obama’s reelection campaign put large sums of money behind anti-Romney efforts. (While affiliated groups did, the Obama campaign was not involved.) It also plays up the now infamous line from an anonymous “Democratic strategist aligned with the White House” that they’d have to pursue a “kill Romney” strategy unless the economy improved. … There’s no mention of former Sen. Rick Santorum, Romney’s chief Republican rival, in the spot.

The second [reason the ad is telling] is the overt plea for cash. In both the text below the video on the Romney campaign’s landing page and in ads that pop up while it plays, the campaign solicits donations. Having asked supporters to visit his website and help the campaign in any capacity during his victory speech last night, it’s becoming more and more evident that Romney is strapped for cash.

Obama’s Most Dangerous GOP Opponent: Netanyahu, Ctd

Some new details on the Israeli prime minister’s recruitment of US senators to push back against their own president and chairman of the JCOS

Netanyahu and his advisers briefed a group of senators and senior congressmen during the past two weeks on the Iranian issue, and asked them to pressure Obama on the matter. Last week, Netanyahu met a group of five senior senators over lunch, headed by Sen. John McCain, who ran four years ago against Obama for president. Netanyahu reportedly told the senators he was not interfering in U.S. politics and expected U.S. officials not to interfere in Israeli politics either.

So Netanyahu gets McCain – the president’s last electoral opponent – to make the following public statement:

There should be no daylight between America and Israel in our assessment of the [Iranian] threat. Unfortunately there clearly is some.”

And the “unfortunately” is clearly, in McCain’s view, Obama’s fault.

James Murdoch Resigns, But Phone-Hacking Crisis Shows Little Sign of Abating
by Mike GiglioFeb 29, 2012 4:35 PM EST

The news of the younger Murdoch’s departure from News International has prompted speculation over succession plans within the Murdoch empire.

Ever since the phone-hacking scandal forced Rupert Murdoch to shutter his News of the World tabloid last summer, there had been a general consensus among London’s media observers: James Murdoch, Rupert’s youngest son and heir apparent, wouldn’t last long at the helm of News International, the U.K. arm of the family’s News Corp. media empire. But few expected he would go so soon. It was announced today that James had stepped down as News International’s executive chairman, leaving behind a tempest of succession rumors and speculation over how deeply the phone-hacking crisis has affected the Murdoch family and their prized U.K. newspaper chain.

According to News Corp. the resignation is part of a longstanding plan to move James to the company’s New York headquarters and have him focus on pay-television business and international operations. “We are all grateful for James’s leadership at News International,” Rupert Murdoch said in a statement announcing the move. James was named News Corp.’s deputy chief operating officer last year.

In the hours immediately following Senator Ted Kennedy’s death, Breitbart called Kennedy a “villain”, a “duplicitous bastard”, a “prick” and “a special pile of human excrement. The temptation is very strong to express joy at this man’s passing but then I would be just like that part of Andrew Breitbart that was so angry and lacking in compassion. To his wife, children and all those in his conservative family that loved him, I am sorry for your loss.

    • March 1, 2012 at 9:46 am

I was almost hoping this was another of his pranks, since all the info came from his own website. My condolences to his family and friends, and even his followers. A lost like that is traumatic no matter their political leanings. He had children and a family that loved him.

I agree cookemom. However, Andrew Breitbart wasn’t simply a conservative who happened to have political disagreements with those who didn’t share his views. He was in fact a hateful individual while he was alive and caused a lot of pain and suffering for innocent individuals who also had children and/or families. And he was completely unapologetic and lacking in any kind of empathy. His death won’t erase that fact. The fact that he has children and a family won’t erase that fact either. However, as I stated earlier, I hope he finds peace and I wish his family also finds peace and comfort at this time.

        • March 1, 2012 at 10:05 am

Condolences to his friends and family – the Universe knew when to call him home.

        • March 1, 2012 at 10:15 am

However, awful he may have been toward others, death is the great equalizer and there is no point in considering those things at this point. The game is over for him and a void is left in the hearts of those who loved him. And yes, death may not erase the impact of certain deeds, but it should give us pause in the way we choose to acknowledge his passing.

Jovie, quit concern trolling over polls at this point. They will fluctuate up until the general election. Some polls have Ron Paul defeating the President by two points, but we all see how well Paul is doing in the primaries, not one state won and hardly enough delegates to be competitive.

      • March 1, 2012 at 9:53 am

Can we be a little careful using the ‘troll’ designation? Some of us may get a little more scared than the rest, but that doesn’t mean we’re not on the same side. It’s really hurtful sometimes to be a staunch supporter of the President and be called names.

Hey there Meta! You are right about the 1st quarter fund raising numbers. I’ve been saving my pennies so that I can make a difference in the final push for record breaking numbers this time.

Cool! Did I also read that you’ve been doing a lot of jogging? I’ve been on a super health kick thanks to Mrs. O and am starting to see the results. Cheers!!

        • March 1, 2012 at 10:20 am

yep, I joined an online site called “couch to 5k” running site. It takes you thru a 9 week training course that builds you up to a 5k run, jog. I’ve been pretty good and I’m truly enjoying it. I never thought I’d be doing this at my age. I’m up to running 4 mi a day now and doing some strength training too. Good luck!

Congrats cookemom on your progress! I’ve heard this is a great program developed by the Canadian Royal Air Force. I believe this used be the former XBX and 5BX fitness plan creators. I was planning to use XBX to get shape for this spring/summer. The couch to 5K is updated and contains safer but equally effective exercises. It’s age adjusted and gradually increases difficulty so people don’t get discouraged after the first day. :)

      • March 1, 2012 at 10:09 am

        Hi Hopefruit,

The first and last of PBO’s campaign events today (4.55 and 9.25) are in private residences, so there’ll be no coverage.

The middle two (6.05 and 8.20) are at ABC Kitchen – it says ‘travel pool coverage’ on the schedule, but I’m not sure if that includes live/video coverage.

PBO’s New Hampshire speech is live at 1.30.

Here’s another great chart that needs to be sent to cable/network stations and sprinkled throughout the internet like confetti ……………

(CHART) – OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL IS DECLINING

    ===========================================

America’s dependence on foreign oil has gone down every single year since President Obama took office. In 2010, we imported less than 50 percent of the oil our nation consumed—the first time that’s happened in 13 years—and the trend continued in 2011.

“….If you’re a fan of the Obama administration, you’ll want to see these graphs because they represent the White House’s case for another term — in easy picture form. The case is: The economy is better than you think. The bailouts and stimulus worked better than you think. And government is smaller than you think…..”

Is Breitbart like Rush Limbaugh or something? I never paid attention to him. I do remember him from the Shirely Sherrod incident though.

    • March 1, 2012 at 10:25 am

The right wingnuts give him credit for destroying ACORN. He was their soldier in the battle for all that they consider true conservatism. I visited a right wing blog site and they are in deep mourning. He was more to them than Rush cause he really believed in what he was doing. Mush Limpballs is just schtick.

Breitbart was also a scam artist who purposely and maliciously destroyed people’s lives for the fun of it and to get revenge after President Obama was elected. In the few hours immediately after senator Ted Kennedy’s passing he tweeted a series of vile comments (I won’t post here) and when called out on it, doubled down instead of apologizing. Breitbart has NEVER apologized or expressed any remorse for the destruction and pain he has brought about in the lives of innocent people such as Shirley Sherrod and others.

  36. March 1, 2012 at 10:25 am

Unions to spend 400 million on this election. That will even things out!

  37. March 1, 2012 at 10:32 am

Truly, the wingnuts are even more deranged than I thought they were – from a site I won’t bother linking:

I always wonder why at least ONE of the barbara boxers or barney franks of the world don’t just die early, like happens occasionally to normal people.

Breitbart had a lot of enemies on the left. He passed last night of so called natural causes. One would suggest an in depth investigation.

$100 says this is another interweb hoax

If he is dead this is horribly suspicious and not unexpected from O.

Possible explanation, sites were hacked, time for this hoax was set for April 1, but they erred on the date and input 3/1/2012 instead of 4/1/2012.

These days, nothing is above suspicion, and I would put nothing beyond Obama’s army of acolytes and lunatics.

andrew breitbart was to vet hussein obama this summer! How can they say so quickly “natural causes”????

Given the powerful people that Breitbart routinely angered, one might be forgiven for being suspicious.

Too bad Pelosi can’t croak. We always get screwed. RIP Andrew.

Must have found Obama’s ACTUAL birth certificate.

Are there ways to induce a massive heart attack on someone so that it does not show up in an autopsy? I think hussein and his thugs have their untraceable fingerprints all over this one.

Very suspisious. There are so many untraceable bio toxins which can cause such a heart attack. The timing is just too convenient for the one. I have a hard time ruling out foul play.We do have a fascist in the WH.Believe it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Obama minions offed him somehow, the Chicago way and all……..That was the first thing that came to my mind, they killed him as retribution for the ACORN videos………..

      • March 1, 2012 at 10:58 am

It’s the paranoia especially that’s just staggering, Ladyhawke, the kind of freakery about Govt, etc that led to things like the Oklahoma bombing. And of course the likes of Breitbart fueled that paranoia and profited from it. Crazy, crazy, scary people.

He was in the same category as Rush Limbaugh… horrible people! My condolences to his family and yes, may his soul RIP but I won’t pretend that there was any nice in this man while he was alive.

      March 1, 2012 at 10:51 am

Whitney Houston had a well known and documented drug addiction. That was made clear even by Ms. Houston herself in various interviews. She was in and out of rehab.

Breitbart was not known for having any drug problems (even though he may have). The most important difference between Houston and Breitbart was that Houston was not known to be a malicious individual, intentionally causing destruction of other people’s lives. Whitney Houston did publicize nasty comments about anyone immediately following their death. Breitbart posted a slew of disgusting tweets after Senator Kennedy’s death, and the FOX NEWS website was rife with nasty racist comments after Whitney Houston died. I hope Breitbart’s political followers and loved ones can use his passing as a life lesson and channel their grief accordingly.

I tried to summon up some sympathy for him, as well, and failed. I feel relieved that there’s one less evil-doer out there, and sad that he spent his 43 years of life spreading lies and dark energy. I do feel sad for his family, his children – they’ve lost their father. That’s as far as I can go.

I hope others like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin all take a look and reconsider how they’re spending their days on this planet. It can all disappear in an instant, and the legacy they leave behind should be better than the one that Breitbart will leave for his children to discover.

    Nation’s Electric Grid Gets Smart

Per a provision in the Recovery Act, the Department of Energy has begun the long process of modernizing the nation’s 110-year-old electric grid. Expected to take possibly two decades to complete, the building of the so-called “Smart Grid” is a federal government partnership with utility companies, which are adding approximately $5 billion for the initial phase to DOE’s $4.5 billion.

The effort will essentially computerize the current electric grid and install digital communication systems among grid components so that electricity can be delivered much more efficiently, collectively saving consumers and businesses billions of dollars over the next 20 years, officials say………

    Tomorrow’s Grid

One key feature of the Smart Grid will be in-home/office Smart Meters: digital devices that will communicate directly with a utility’s operations center. Among many other capabilities, Smart Meters will let consumers know how much electricity they’re using at any moment and what the cost is. Other components, like transformers and substations, will similarly communicate with the utility. In addition, the Smart Grid will include more sources of renewable energy, such as solar and wind power.
