And, this is funny and true ….
Shorter Nate Silver: I love numbers. Numbers are everything. But Don't pay attention to any numbers that look good for POTUS.— Steve Weinstein (@steveweinstein) March 22, 2012
I’m really sorry Nate Silver sold out. He is/was very good…
Me too isonprize. He was so on target during 08 campaign, and it makes me sad to see someone take the wrong path. As Brinker with Komen is learning and so must Nate–once you lose your reputation–once you can’t be trusted…it’s over.
Some good news:
BREAKING: @edshow reporting that Sanford city commission has passed a "no confidence" motion in Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee. Yes! #Trayvon— Jinoden (@marabout40) March 22, 2012
Can’t they just can his ass? Jesus, anyone with a scintilla of shame would have resigned already.
Fire his sorry ass. This shows you what they think of that young black boy, any black boy. This entire situation really have made me mad, I mean mad. Fire that racists police chief.
Good evening everyone!
Will make sure this sticks to Mitt ….

I’ve gotten lots of good responses on FB since I posted this. Committing an act of love is such a powerful statement and it’s so seldom made. What a brave man he is.
want company? Congrats on first
You guys are super quick. When I started writing that there was only 1 post. Quick Draw McGraws! LOL

Did I detect a podium slap at the end of that speech?
Wondering when someone is gonna ask @JebBush what he thinks of the Trayvon Martin case & the Stand Your Ground Laws he championed!
What was that car/van doing driving real slow behind PBO??? Geeeez. No likey.
Did it look official? Probably had a SWAT team.
It doesnt need to look official. If it’s close it’s a ‘friendly’.
Exactly. Roman emperors would be jealous of our Presidents’ security.
I had the same thought! Question to TOD – what is the verdict on the new Obama book, “The Showdown”?
I downloaded it because David Corn has been sane of late and I read an excerpt that was good but I won’t get to it until the weekend.
Great! Let us know what you think about the book. I don’t what to waste time and money on negative O books!
WELL…I GOT TO SEE THE END OF THAT SPEECH…I HOPE PBO IS EATING HEALTHY ON THIS TREK OR I’M CALLING MICHELLE AND TURNING HIM IN!!!!!!!!
Aw, let the poor guy have a few French fries.
Here’s the full WH video of the St. Patrick’s Day festivities yesterday:
World’s first rock & roll concert and how it ended in a chaos. A great read.
Is this a joke? Mitt reportedly said that etch a sketch doesn’t refer to him, but to the organizational chart of the campaign (according to tom)
“tpm. I hate these keyboards that decide what I mean.
He is trying to do damage control and it isn’t going to work. It won’t stop him from the nomination, but it will hurt him in several of the upcoming states. That is one of the reasons they are trying to just the othr nominees cede him the nomination, because the longer this goes on, the more r3ecord there is of his pandering to the extreme right. The problem is, after this the extreme right is more likely to rebel against him. And if they did push Santorum, Gingrich and Paul out their supporters would really rebel. That is one of the reasons PBO never called for Clinton to drop out. Part of it was his basic decency, the rest of it was he knew that if he was seen as pushing her off to the side, her supporters, or a big chunk of them (larger than the PUMA crowd, would have potentially been lost.
Romney is playing with fire right now and has no idea how hot it is going to get. He can’t even afford to fie the guy who brought this up today, because that would be an even bigger admission of guilt.
You should have seen that Maddow segment just now. Romney might be fooling some folks in the MSM – like Chuck Todd and/or Scarborough, but he won’t fool the majority of voters. Even the crazy Repub base is not trusting him – despite their racism and hatred of PBO.
yeah, he realized how absurd that was, since the etch a sketch line was in response to a question on how Romney could pivot to the center after the primaries. It was not about the organizational chart of the campaign.
Not to worry — Romney, with all the force of all his conviction(!) said that he means everything he’s been saying and that is the way he will govern.
Enlighten me please. I was calling volunteers tonight and one said he would be at the meeting and he would be bringing his etch a sketch. What is up. I missed it.
Just turn on the TV or read any news coverage this morning: A prominent Romney spokesman, answering a question as to how Romney would be able to pivot to the center after the primaries, said (I paraphrase but the clip is EVERYWHERE), “He’ll just reset. Like an etch a sketch”.
That man is getting fired, you watch.
Funny Etch a sketch page. Just click and mitt will change positions. ( or shake)
Awesome and so stolen. Thanks
DEBUNKING THE GOP CLAIM THAT PBO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HIGH GAS PRICES
Since the Republican Party started blaming President Obama for high gas prices there has been a plethora of blog posts, fact sheets, info-graphics, newspaper articles and interviews with experts discussing the issue. And there was a terrific presentation that Senator Jeff Bingaman did on the floor of the senate that could have been entitled “High Gas Prices 101″.
President Obama has been talking to the American people for a long time now about our need for energy independence. And he has a record of accomplishments on energy that is impressive. Most importantly, President Obama wants to end subsidies to oil companies who don’t need the money. He wants to use that money for energy independence. The Republican Party is against this. Senator Bernie Sanders has legislation that goes after speculators to stop manipulation oil futures market. But guess what, the Republicans are against it.
The best part of the Republican Party ridiculous claims is that the American people are finally getting the facts about the causes of high gas prices. And the more they learn the more they realize that the Republican Party is just full of liars and hypocrites.
Romney has assured us that he will be the same in the general because he was a ‘conservative’ governor. He certainly wasn’t a conservative campaigner in that race. Effing liar.
Well strange thing happened while waiting to hear PBO’s speech. Whitehouse kept saying it was loading….while I waited….then it ended the stream.
LOL And I actually thought I would see a live speech instead of a taped rerun. LOL Oh well, will wait patiently for the vid.
Might as well mention there’s another book out — this time from David Corn “Showdown”
Obama’s Cool Killing of Osama
[this link has video interview of the author by Robert Wright from The Atlantic]
David Corn’s book Showdown, a behind-the-scenes look at the Obama White House, has just hit the shelves. The book includes fresh reporting on the killing of Osama bin Laden, and the details Corn shares in the exchange below left me more convinced than ever that Obama is truly a cool customer—like, eerily cool, maybe even too cool. Don’t miss the part at the end about the ironic exchange Corn had with Obama as the Navy Seals mission, unbeknownst to Corn, was underway.
I really hate it when people talk about PBO as being too cool. ANd this was not Corn making that statement. Apparently, Wright feels that PBO should have been all jittery and sweating, etc as they were leading up to the raid. To me, one of the greatest qualities a President can have is total coolness in tense situations. Not coolness in terms of aloofness, but coolness in the sense of trusting in his decisions, not doing second guessing of himself, and the willingness to accept the consequences of his decisions, no matter what they may be. PBO is that person. Romney is the total antithesis of that person.
And listening to the interview that was linked to, I expect this to be a very positive book about the President. .
I’m with you… I don’t get the people who think it’s a bad thing for a President to be composed and confident.
Too much of the soap opera/reality show mentality, I guess.
I’m you on that japatwoone. I’d rather have a PBO at a negotiation table with some of the worlds bad asses than a flippy-floppy Bible thumper.
Rachel Maddow’s opening segment is eviscerating Mitt Romney. She is calling him out for LYING from his very first campaign speech. This is really good.
Yes, Ladyhawke, she busted his chops with something called the TRUTH!!
I was sooooo happy for that segment. Lawrence always calls Robney a lie. Rachel did a really great job. The etch a sketch gaffe was the best thing of the day for Robney’s opponents.
all she had to do is read her own blogger, Steve Benen..
his weekly CHRONICLES OF MITT ROMNEY’S MENDACITY is a must every Friday.
Rachel calling out Mr. Willard “etch a sketch” Romney’s lies.
I really think there is something seriously wrong with Mitt Romney. He just lies about everything all the time. This is not normal. He has no ability to process facts. The man is dangerous.
Isn’t Romney a member of a church, and isn’t lying a sin? Unless it’s okay to lie in Mitt’s church.
Even beyond the “normal politician” lying, Mr. Romney is a PATHOLOGICAL LIAR .
Exactly. Thank you Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell for calling Mitt Romney’s LIES LIES. How refreshing. The feckless media tiptoes around and uses every other word but LIE to describe Romney’s mendacity. It’s infuriating.
Thank you Steve Benen for documenting Mitt Romney’s lies in your weekly Friday column. Just think about that. Mitt Romney is such a prolific liar that there is enough material each week for Steve Benen to document and debunk. This level of dishonesty is just shocking.
Lie, cheat or steal. Anything to get ahead. After all it is his turn to put on the royal robe and crown and take his rightful place on the throne. Then he can start signing Grover Norquist’s laws.
Dear Chips, can you post this must-see Maddow segment on Romney’s dishonesty whenever you are able to? Thanks so much!!!
This segment should be sent to everyone. If his supporters are suppose to be so educated, they have to know that he is a liar. He sure is dangerous.
Rachel just eviscerated Romney on his lying. Sight to see!
I sat there and listen to Rachel Maddow tell the truth about Mitt Romney. Did you guys hear her? She came right out and said that Romney lies and he has no problem lying. Thank you Rachel for having the guts to do what the other media doesn’t have the guts to do, which is tell the truth about Mitt Romney. And the truth is he is a bold face liar.
Today Jeb Bush endorsed a bold face liar, but hay no big deal, he is use to it. His brother was one too, George W. Bush.
What is funny is this type of lying Romney does, would not help America if he was to be elected…in-terms of building relationships with the International community. How could the international community trust someone that would lie to his own people just to obtain power.
If he would lie like this…its about character not politics…Just look at how International Leaders describe
President Obama…look at how he has been able to get other countries on board regarding sanctions against
Iran. Lol, now think Romney…sorry for the image in advance.
Good, This is the kinda stuff she ought to be bring everyday instead of her hair-on-fire, talk-me-down crap.
Mr Etch-A-Sketch was ‘severely’ ‘shaken-up’ by Rachel just now. FANTASTIC!!!!
Please post when you can Chips.
I need some answers that google didnt’ seem to help with.
So I applied for a 2 different position with the CDC over a month ago. I believe that they were the same category, just different Class levels, i.e. 7/9 and 11/12. Yesterday I got a “Notice of Results” for the lower rating and it said my rating was 89.0 for level 9 and I have no idea what that means. I tried calling CDC and they give you to a secretary, but the secretary just tells you basic stuff.
So am I eligible for the job or what? Before Katrina, I worked for the HHS Office of Public Health in NOLA that’s federal right? I don’t remember it being to complicated back in 2004
Call your congressman on Thursday, they will find our for you!
anything here? http://www.opm.gov/fedclass/
Analyzing 36 years of gasoline prices and U.S. oil production, the Associated Press finds no statistical correlation between how much is pumped out of the ground and how much is paid at the pump.
AP says four independent statisticians came to the same conclusion.
As it was four years ago, the price of gasoline is an issue in the presidential campaign. This year, it’s Republican candidates — notably Newt Gingrich — claiming that more domestic oil production would lower pump prices. AP writes, “If more domestic oil drilling worked as politicians say, you’d now be paying about $2 a gallon for gasoline. Instead, you’re paying the highest prices ever for March.”
Newt Gingrich is just a Mitt Romney, a liar.
Newt Gingrich is a liar AND a cheater.

Uh oh, Romney-bot malfunction…
Etch A Sketch Shakes Campaign, Rattles Romney
A Rick Santorum spokeswoman was handing out Etch A Sketches before a Mitt Romney town hall Wednesday in Arbutus, Md., furthering the goading of the GOP front runner after a gaffe by his campaign earlier in the day.
And it apparently worked. After the event, Romney shot back at reporters who quizzed him about it.
“I’m not doing a press conference right now, OK?” a testy Romney said, grabbing a reporter’s tape recorder. He then hastily called a media avail and took one question…
Rachel just destroyed Romney! It was something else.

STOP EXCESSIVE OIL SPECULATION
By Senator Bernie Sanders
March 21, 2012
A group of senators Wednesday introduced a bill to make federal regulators invoke emergency powers to rein in speculators responsible for rapidly-rising gasoline prices. The legislation would set a 14-day deadline for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to implement rules to stop excessive speculation by Wall Street traders in oil futures markets. The bill by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is cosponsored by Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Al Franken (D-Minn.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Bill Nelson (D-Fla.).
The measure was prompted by gasoline prices that are nearing $4 a gallon and the commission’s refusal to obey a Wall Street reform law that required trading limits to be in place by Jan. 17, 2011.
“Millions of American consumers are hurting as a result of excessive speculation on the oil futures market and the future of our economy hangs in the balance. The time to act is now,” Sanders said at a news conference in the Capitol.
“Oil supply is up and demand is down so there is no logical reason why gas prices continue to soar,” added Cardin. “We need to take decisive action now to stop the speculators who are driving up prices for all of us at a time we can least afford it.”
“The CFTC has the power to stop this excessive speculation, but has been dragging its feet. This legislation would direct the CFTC to take immediate action to reduce unnecessary speculation and give families some relief at the pump,” Klobuchar said.
“To combat excessive gas prices we need a crackdown on out-of-control speculation and gambling in oil markets,” Blumenthal said. “This agency– inactive for too long– must be compelled to act, stopping manipulation and abuses that cost consumers and endanger our fragile economic recovery. ”
There is broad consensus that speculators are to blame. Exxon Mobil, the American Trucking Association, Delta Airlines, the Petroleum Marketers Association of America and the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis all say excessive oil speculation significantly increases oil and gasoline prices. Citing a recent report from the investment bank Goldman Sachs, a Feb. 27, 2012, article in Forbes said excessive oil speculation adds $.56 to the price of a gallon of gas.
The legislation calling for emergency action is identical to bipartisan legislation that overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 402-19 during a similar crisis in 2008.
He was on Ed talking about this tonight. The fact that the CFTC has REFUSED to obey Wall St Reform is very telling! We have to make sure that this argument HAS LEGS!
Wonder what happened to all the talkers that said “Just let the free market do its job!” Doesn’t seem so NOW, does it?
U.S. COMMODITY FUTURES TRADING COMMISSION (Commissioner Bart Chilton)
Speculators and Commodity Prices—Redux
Commissioner Bart Chilton
February 24, 2012
On March 16, 2011, I spoke to an industry group concerning the impact of speculative activity on commodity prices. Eleven months later, I’m still talking about it, and saying almost precisely the same thing. Speculators are necessary liquidity providers to our markets, and while they perhaps are not driving prices to uneconomic levels, they certainly have an effect on prices—above and beyond where they might otherwise go—and American consumers and taxpayers are shouldering that burden.
President Obama spoke about rising gas prices yesterday. You can’t turn on the television or the radio without hearing about record high gas prices, and yet the CFTC has not yet been able to implement Congressionally-mandated position limits to put the brakes on excessive speculation in oil and other commodity markets. Meanwhile, trade associations representing Wall Street interests have sued us in federal court in order to impede our imposition of position limits.
So, I find myself repeating—and repeating—the same message: it’s high time to kick it in gear and use the one tool we have to appropriately address high oil and gas prices.
In my remarks last year, I listed numerous academic studies, reports, and citations supporting the contention that speculators have some effect on commodity prices. I did so because some had expressed—with unwarranted confidence—that no evidence even existed. For example:
Wonder where the “teeth” are to enforce the Wall St reform law that would curb this abuse?
The mandate is by far the most unpopular feature of a law on which Americans are otherwise evenly divided. A Kaiser Family Foundation poll this month found that two-thirds of those surveyed disliked the mandate. Even among Democrats, a majority (53 percent) opposed the requirement; independents (66 percent) and Republicans (77 percent) were even more hostile.
Yet this is a provision that the overwhelming majority — those with insurance — should support, for the simple reason that these people currently end up footing the bill for much of that $116 billion.
As the government’s brief notes, “Congress found that this cost-shifting increases the average premium for insured families by more than $1,000 per year.”
In other words, those worried about having to pay ever-higher premiums should be clamoring for the individual mandate, not agitating for repeal.
UP With Chris Hayes Interview
Bart Chilton (Commissioner U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission)
Roadblocks to Financial Reform Regulations
Sat Mar 10, 2012 7:27 PM EST
Following the economic collapse of the “too big to fail” banks, the Democratically controlled Congress passed the “Dodd-Frank Act” to reform financial regulations. However conservative lawmakers, like Republican Scott O’Malia, are doing what they can to put procedural roadblocks in front of implementing Dodd-Frank regulations. Bart Chilton, a Democratic member of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, joins “UP w/ Chris Hayes” to explain the uphill battle his agency is facing as conservative lawmakers and financial lobbyists try to stall regulation.
Question for anyone who watch Morning Joe, what did JoeScar have to say about the SYG laws in Florida.
Saw only a few minutes ofit this morning but what I saw, Joe and all the others were livid. Did not hear one hint of defense of anything that happened. However ,the small part I saw don’t remember them talking about the SGL so can’t help with that specific.
I think this is a must read. Opponents of the Stand Your Ground legislation, as it was being proposed, predicted exactly what has happened—–that this law would provoke racially motivated killings. And get a load of one of the chief advocates——he’s real big on the confederacy—-belongs to Sons of Confederate Veterans—–loves that flag—-has lots of “issues”. This is getting uglier by the minute——a license to kill, indeed:
This whole business has really bothered me because a certain aspect of Zimmerman’s doesn’t ring true. To wit,it has been my experience that neighborhood watch personnel KNOW their neighborhood and the people in it. They KNOW the kids and who they belong to. They KNOW the cars that come and go and are familiar with visitors. My question is, if you are a righteous watch person, why didn’t you KNOW that Trayvon had a right to be were he was.
When I was a kid(looooong time ago), the neighborhood watch was a wino named Mr. Reed. He was a WWII vet who was always around with a wine bottle in his back pocket. He knew everyone and he helped women with their groceries and men with heavy chores. Anyone that got out of line, in any way, was chastized. We never saw police and this was Chicago. Mr Reed didn’t have a gun either.
My point is that this Zimmerman person was looking for an excuse to use his self appointed authority. I wonder how many people in this neighborhood even knew this so called guardian. I also wonder if he even lived in that community. I wonder?
The head of some national neighborhood watch organization said he could not find any connection between Zimmerman and a neighborhood watch group. He said all neighborhood watch people are trained to be strictly ‘eyes and ears’ and then call police, NEVER follow up and NEVER carry weapons.
