You’re right – the so-called leaders have been silent for all these years that the President has experienced hateful racism, and have said nothing to call out the people who perpetrate it. In fact, the right wing leaders themselves have had a heyday claiming they are the real Americans, but exhibit few of the positive qualities that people associate with being American.
And as far as people calling the President a Muslim, the only leader (apart from President Obama, who has said repeatedly that the United States is not at war with Islam, and that there “is no ‘them’ and ‘us’, there’s just us”) who has said anything worthwhile has been Colin Powell, who chastised those who think being a Muslim is somehow inherently evil, and recalled a Muslim woman crying over the grave of her fallen soldier, who died defending this country. There are Muslims who are American citizens, who risk/give their lives fighting in the US military, who live and work in communities, who have every right to practice their faith as much as any other religion. Being a Muslim means nothing more or less than being a Muslim.

I have always maintained that the 2nd amendment regarding the right to bear arms, and having a well-armed militia, meant the military, which at that time were like our modern day police force. It’s an argument reasonable people tried to make a bit ago, but they were drowned out by those who PBO claimed clung to their “guns and their religion”. Damn if he wasn’t right then.
Whether #TrayvonMartin will be the catalyst for a major push to reform gun ownership responsibility in the US is largely dependent on us. I doubt if it will be a central tenant of the Democratic Party position in the 2012 Election but it should be pursued unrelentingly just as soon as President Obama is re-elected and we regain control of Congress.
I have zero problem with a person owning a gun (shotgun, 6 shot revolver – not Glocks, etc) that they keep in their living space for the purpose of personal protection but the stringency of what they need to do to qualify for that ownership should be significant, particularly regarding issues like are children living with them, do the have a record of spouse abuse, and, obviously, do they have a criminal record or are diagnosed with various psychiatric illnesses.
I deplore hunting, but grant that a license to transport a weapon and use it for hunting is something that any effort to deny would severely undermine reforming the real issues, e.g., people carrying handguns into shopping malls, schools, acting as vigilantes, etc., legally, as well as the types of weapons people (non-law enforcement, non-military citizens) should be strictly prohibited from owning or having access – automatic weapons, etc.
It’s a long road before gun ownership responsibility, as opposed to egregious claims of ‘rights’ that the Founders’ never intended, is an American value.
But, I’m more hopeful that the demographics of America are moving away from over 40, white, male-dominated society, and toward a much stronger women-powered, highly diverse and highly motivated under 30 society.
That’s why 6 Nov 2012 is so critical and why women, Hispanics, AAs, LGBTs, Unions need to ensure that 1936 is replaced by 2012 in the record books – #LandslideOBAMA2012 #LandsldieDEMS2012.

Bob, I totally agree with you here except I would argue why people need guns to protect their homes when statistics prove that these guns kill more family members than actual intruders. Also, while I am no fan of hunting, I do know that some people in rural areas really rely on hunting for food. If we made sure all our people were adequately fed maybe they would not have to hunt wild game for food.

In 1791, when the first ten amendments were ratified, individuals did not posses firearms. Rather, guns and gun powder were stored at armories and were dispensed to the militia whenever there was a need to defend against domestic insurrections or foreign aggression.
By the way, Bobfr, here is the entire text of the Second Amendment:

My question to the NRA, and all gun enthusiasts is: Why did the framers find it necessary to state, as a condition, the idea of ” A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of the state.” before proclaiming “the right of people to keep and bear arms”? Surely unregulated individuals going out and shooting un-armed citizens is not exactly what the founders had in mind when they wrote the second amendment which calls for “A well regulated militia….” Sadly, of course, the right wing dominated U.S. Supreme Court totally disregarded the issue of ” A well regulated militia” when they ruled in favor of unregulated rights of individuals to carry guns. I hope that in the future there will be justices who take seriously the entire text of the Second Amendment, as well the context of individual gun ownership in 1791 when the Amendment was ratified.

What I feel when I see hoodie.
As a mother of a thirty-two year old son, for some reason I’ve come to see my son old sweat shirts and hoodies as things I’ve come to treasure. I can remember as he aged and would grow, his old ragged torn sweat shirts and hoodies always made their way to the pile of clothes that were too worn to be donated so they were thrown away.
As time passed and he wasn’t as hard on his clothes, they went to the pile to be donated. It wasn’t until he neared the age of moving out and I sensed the days when he wouldn’t be around the house, I started holding on to these articles of clothing and justified my reasons for keeping them to be, they would be good to keep for working in the yard.
I worked in the yard today, and being the weather is a little cool, I grabbed one of his old hoodies from the drawer and I thought of Trayvon and his dear mother and even though not knowing her, I felt emotionally connected.
It’s amazing how the human mind processes things, where a hoodie in one person’s mind conjures up bad thoughts of the person wearing it, but with another it brings a inner smile every time it’s pulled from the drawer.
What do you feel when you see a hoodie?

Don’t know what to think. There was a link to the news report the day after the killing and it mentioned a broken nose but it’s really strange that no one has mentioned it until now. No photos, hospital reports and now conflicting witnesses. Just weird.
He did go to the hospital—–there are a lot of troubling aspects to this case. I want to know how this all of a sudden—-a month after it happened, or whatever it was—-was brought raging into the public light—–who and why. It’s bothering me.

What people don’t seem to get is Zimmerman had no darn right following Trayvon. Let’s say it is true that Zimmerman had a broken nose, and Trayvon attack a guy who weight over 100 pounds more then him. Please remember that it was Zimmerman who follow Trayvon. It was Zimmerman who was told not to follow Trayvon, but he follow him anyway. It was Zimmerman who had a gun. Now I want people to please remember this, if George Zimmerman had let the police handle the whole thing, mostly Trayvon would still be a live. When the dispatcher told Zimmerman we don’t need you to follow him, if Zimmerman had said I’m going to my car and I will wait for the police to come. To handle this, but he didn’t do that did he? Zimmerman murder the kid. And he need to be arrested.
So right. I’ve been screaming this to myself for days. Even if the young man that Zimmerman chose to follow had no business being in that neighborhood, Zimmerman had no right to follow him and then shoot him. He wasn’t a sheriff. Neighborhood watch organizations don’t advocate weaponry. And when the police told him to back off, he didn’t.

Good day all you O’s!!!! Another great getting up day for us TODdies. I’m just checking in after spending most of the day with my granddaughter. We went to see The Hunger Games. It was a very good movie. I recommend it, but read the book first if you can. It’s not necessary as the movie stayed very much with the book. I must be getting old though, cause I laughed out loud at the coming attraction for the movie, ‘Abraham Lincoln, the Zombie Slayer’. I got so tickled, I couldn’t stop. My granddaughter was horrified at my behavior and I may have burned any future public movie time with her. I’m like, WHAT!!! ZOMBIES?!?! REALLY!!! OMG, now I’m cracking up again.
I saw that trailer too cookemom! I cracked up laughing and so did half the audience. Unbelievable! I intend to very seriously point out to everyone that the movie is riddled with historical inaccuracies.

Interesting about Obamacare — I like it, too, but the author says in response to a comment after her post that she hates the fact that the administration is embracing that, and instead should be, and have been all along, calling it the Patient Protection Act. Doesn’t have to be one or the other, of course. But I like the in-your-face acceptance of Obamacare.

UNC has burst PBO’s bracket!
As a Tarheels fan, when their point guard got hurt, I didn’t expect them to make it to the Final Four. You have to remember when POTUS made his picks, the Tarheels point guard was playing. Marshall was to important for them to lose and expect them to win. Anyone who have seen Marshall play knows he is one of the best point guard in the country. Plus Henson wasn’t healthy, along with his wrist, his ankle got step on. So the President is okay, the team that lost to the Jayhawks this evening were not the team POTUS pick to win it all. If Marshall were playing I think UNC could have won, but injuries are part of the game.This is the second year in a row that UNC have lost in the final eight. Last year it was Kentucky who kept them from making it to the final four. I think Kentucky or Ohio State will win the championship. But who cares, my Tarheels didn’t make it.
Well, anniebella, I too picked the Tarheels to win the championship. I am really sad that that they didn’t make it. I am going to root for Ohio State because I have many friends in Ohio. Kentucky looks very strong, but in sports even the strong could be upset.

In the Trayvon Martin case, the people pushing back against the current established “narrative” (of an unarmed teen being shot and killed while walking to his father’s home- in other words, the facts), and attempting to break up the uniting American front that is calling out for justice, are not doing so for a man named George. Honestly, I get the feeling that Zimmerman doesn’t have many friends or defenders in his life. The people you see crawling into the media spotlight right now are there to serve one purpose; not to defend George Zimmerman, but to discredit and trivialize the situation (including the real victim, Trayvon Martin). Why? Because this situation, as outrageous and tragic as it was, was a spark that a lot of people needed to get up and demand equal respect and equal protection. Why else would anyone stoop to slander a dead teen who was not a public figure, not a delinquent, and did nothing to justify him being stalked and killed? I’ll tell you why: Because the nation is mobilizing, and the ones who have always gained and retained power by keeping us divided and suppressed do not know how to control it.
They. Are. Scared.
And now they are attempting to slow the rising tide by throwing in confusion, innuendo, and accusations of “reverse” bias. It’s so important that we stay focused and not allow negative influences to affect the passion for seeking justice or to turn the purposeful, nonviolent protests into disorganized riots.
Somewhere, in some back room, politicos and media experts are racking their brains trying to figure out how such a movement could start without them. And when POTUS chimed in so eloquently, many people saw his words as an “official” stamp. This will not go away, even if the shooter is finally arrested. What we’re seeing right now is more coherent and heartfelt than anything the Tea Party, the Occupiers, or any other movement could muster, because it’s about something real.

I see where all these Zimmerman folks are coming out trying to defend him. Bottom line is if Zimmerman was not following Trayvon Martin, there would have been no shooting. If he had let the police handle things then he wouldn’t be in the mess he is in and Trayvon would be alive. These Zimmerman folks is saying that Trayvon attack Zimmerman, but Trayvon didn’t know who it was following him, he didn’t know if the person following him meant him harm, so maybe Trayvon was afraid and trying to defend his self. Neighborhood Watch said they recommend that you don’t follow anyone and you don’t carry a weapon. Zimmerman went against both. This is a smear attack against Trayvon, but common sense tells you if Zimmerman had left this in the hands of the police Trayvon mostly would be alive.

I just finished watching a segment on Dateline about hiring vets reported by Tom Browkaw and at no time did he or Lester Holt mentioned the efforts by Joining Forces in getting all of these companies to pledge to hire vets and their splices; neither did they mention the job training and other resources that they have put in place for our military families. The MSM goes out of its way to keep silent about what PBO is doing that will benefit so many people. Here was a perfect chance to get this needed information out and they chose not to. Long ago Inuse to respect Tom Brokaw, but my attitude changed when I saw the barely concealed contempt that he has for our president. What is wrong with these people?

How in the hell can Dateline do a report about hiring vets and not even mention the steps President Obama and FLOTUS have taken to help them find employment? This is just criminal. This is inexcusable. It is a blatant attempt to ensure PBO does not get the credit he deserves.
I remember when every other word out of the mouth of Republicans was how much they loved the troops. You couldn’t say anything negative about President Bush because that was indirectly criticizing the troops. Back then, we were supposed to believe that it was the Republicans who were the real patriots. Let’s face it, President Obama has done more for the troops than any of the previous administrations. He has co-opted the GOP line on the troops. For my money, that’s why the Dateline report purposely left out any mention of the things PBO has done to help veterans get hired. President Obama makes the GOP look like amateurs and phonies.
A simple google search using the keywords ‘Obama administration jobs vets’ would have produced a large number of hits detailing the administrations efforts in helping vets get employment. The Dateline folks should be embarrassed.

I had the same thought.
I watched this segment on Dateline because we heard this couple from our town was going to be featured—-actually live close to us. And it was a nice story about this couple who had watched a former Dateline program on a returning vet who could not find a job—-Dateline had actually been following this guy, Dennis Weaver, through training and off to war and back again. So this couple drives from Illinois up to Wisconsin to meet with the vet and they offer him a job with one of their companies—- and how well it has worked out for both. Vet has gone from being totally distraught and depressed to renewed pride and happiness, liking his job and feeling good about being able to support his family. And this couple said that worked out so well they have since hired 2 more vets, and that has also worked out well, those vets saying how much they like working for this couple etc. And the couple said how important it was to hire these returning vets, that they have had excellent training and are skilled in many areas and employers have tended to shy away but there was no need for that. And they said there should be a national effort. And the only problem is I kept waiting for someone to mention all President Obama’s initiatives in this area, all the efforts and Vow to Hire a Vet bill and encouragement by this administration etc. Both the president and first lady talk about this at every opportunity. And of course, not a peep about any of this. It is so infuriating. Would it kill the media to ever give this president credit where it is due?
pls send the Dateline producers a line about this omission of POTUS, FLOTUS and The Bidens’ contribution to hiring vets. – I know I am going to do so.

Wasn’t Tom Brokaw a guest on Oprah with the First Lady speaking about this very topic? It’s not like he doesn’t know she’s been working on raising awareness. And it’s not just a case of giving credit to the President, First Lady, VP and Dr. Biden – although they deserve the credit. It’s about continuing to raise awareness, and giving people tools to help them get involved in the effort. It does no-one any good if people just go away with a good feeling, but they don’t know how they themselves can get involved in the effort. These people and their racism know no bounds, clearly.
Theo67, yes it was Tom Brokaw on the Oprah Show with the First Lady. In fact,, Tom Brokaw featured his hometown and I believe the couple lived in a house that his parents had built. All we want is to make sure that these people who produce these shows or segments make sure that they are up to date with the progress that POB has done since they last reported. Let people see that we are making good progress under this Administration.

Ron Paul said Rick Santorum is a phony. I don’t agree with Paul on alot, but he told the truth about Santorum. I’m about to get ready to listen to President Obama.

Oh, Dudette, you have just made my day. I woke up with pain, brush it off, prayed for our POB and my brother and others, and was moved as I went downstairs to up open the lower leve. I was filled with a heavy heart about all that we all talked about last evening about POB’s trip, the coverage, and then I put a CD by Whitney, her last one with, “I Look To You.” Moved with emotions for many reason.
Music is a vital part in my life. Made a pot of tea. Came back upstairs and had the urge to pray again for POB. Little did I know until turning to see what was on the news, there was Alex(do not like her, but Dr. Eric Dyson was on the panel, and they showed the clip about POTUS’s open mic with Medvedev, and I just went off. After listening briefly, turn her off. I wonder how many mics were open when GW was in office, and they didi not report. They could not cover anything on Sunday, but they were on this shit today. Leaders do this stuff all the time, but Rhodes just slipped up with leaving POB open. You better believe he will get an ear full from POTUS. Or whoever was responsible. It is not a big deal. At least he was heard telling the truth. I rest with that in my heart.

As for the open mic story, look at it this way — as pivotal as this trip is, a little “controversy” however hyped up it may be, is probably the only way MSM would’ve done any reporting on the President’s trip. He didn’t say anything outrageous. In fact, it was quite true, he WILL have more breathing room to get things done after his re-election. We all know this currentCongress won’t do anything between now and the election to solve any problems or more things forward. And so what if some people are shocked that he has confidence about his chances. If he wasn’t confident, he wouldn’t be our guy and he shouldn’t be standing for re-election in the first place. We’ve gotta do the work to make sure that confidence isn’t for naught – get him re-elected and put some folks in Congress who are really about serving the country.

I went to a Cherry Hill Democratic meeting on Saturday and my Congressman, Rob Andrews, was there and spoke for about 45 minutes.
He said he will be there on Monday to testify on ACA.
The fact that there are protests outside the court, and especially since candidates running for president are there, this is argument that this is a political issue not a constitutional issue. Therefore, I believe that the ACA won’t be overturned.

When our President returns back home, mission accomplished and invite the local reporters for personal interviews who will respect him, the office of the President and most of all, let him finish an answer…..then we can say checkmate.

Dave Bing, Detroit mayor, hospitalized for intestinal inflammation

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing had surgery Saturday to repair a perforation of the intestines. He is expected to remain in hospitalized for the next five to seven days..”The surgery was successful and the Mayor is resting comfortably,” said Dr. Scott Dulchavsky, chairman of the Henry Ford Hospital department of surgery. “The mayor will return to normal activities within three weeks. However, he can resume limited administrative duties as early as tomorrow.”
Bing, 68, a basketball star with the Detroit Pistons during the 1960s and 70s and later a successful business executive, was elected mayor during a runoff election in 2009, his first ever position in public office. Bing inherited a $331 million budget deficit. While having shaved the deficit down to $197 million the city faces the possibility of running out of money by mid-April.
According to the mayor’s office, Bing’s chief of staff Kirk Lewis has been appointed deputy mayor and will act as mayor until Bing can resume his normal activities. The illness comes as a deadline looms over a pending consent agreement or emergency financial manager decree from Gov. Rick Snyder.
Late Friday afternoon, a ruling by the Michigan Court of Appeals reinstated the Monday deadline and allows a deal to be negotiated by a deadline Monday under Public Act 4, Michigan’s emergency manager law.
The court reversed a ruling by a Lansing judge that barred Snyder and the state financial review team from entering into a consent agreement until after a hearing next Thursday on alleged violations of the state’s Open Meetings Act.
Bing spokesman Robert Warfield said that the mayor’s hospitalization would not affect the negotiations. Snyder has been out of the country on a trade mission for the last week, but state treasurer Andy Dillon will continue the negotiations throughout the weekend

And I see that Chuck Todd has finally mentioned PBO’s Korea trip on twitter—–with—guess what?—the open mic quote, what he considers a “gotcha”. Pitiful “news” media. The explanation is perfectly reasonable, of course, but that won’t stop them from trying to make hay out of that one moment. No mention of all the significant, meaningful moments that came before and after. Beyond disgusting.
Chuck Todd and the rest of the jackals (that are ignoring the substance of this trip and focusing on side stories) need to be called out on this crap. I feel dirty just reading about the twisted reporting coming from these so called journalists. They disgust me.
If it’s any consolation, I listened to some NPR this morning, and there was no mention of this incident. They did quite an extensive amount of coverage of the speech, playing many segments and objectively reporting. They could have done more, but it was a focused report on what was said and a little bit about the context. No mention of the open mic. Even when they spoke of Russia, they mentioned that this might be the last time that President Obama and President Medvedev will meet, and they relayed the good stuff they’ve done together (per Pres Medvedev’s closing comments).

Report Proves Health Reform Is Here To Stay: 49 States Have Already Taken Action Supporting Its Implementation

As the Supreme Court prepares to take up the question of the constitutionality of health care reform, a new report finds that almost all the states have begun implementing parts of the Affordable Care Act — suggesting that even the court’s rejection of the measure won’t be able to stop many of the law’s big changes.
According to a new survey from the Commonwealth Fund, “49 states and the District of Columbia have already taken action supporting the law’s implementation, such as passing legislation, issuing regulations or other guidance, or actively reviewing insurer filings.” Between January 1, 2010, and January 1, 2012, “23 states and the District of Columbia had taken new legislative or regulatory action on at least one of these reforms” — which include changes like expanding dependent coverage for young adults up to age 26, prohibiting lifetime limits on health benefits, and phasing out annual dollar limits on health benefits — and an additional 26 states had “taken other action to promote compliance with the reforms, such as issuing bulletins to insurers.” States took the following actions:

thanks for that link ut. I just watched and David Corn was terrific. I definitely plan to buy the book. It is a fascinating look behind the scenes. It just shows how hard actual governing has been for President Obama when all the GOP has to do is say NO, obstruct and take hostages. This is no way to run a democracy in the 21st century. Historians will look back on this period and say the Republican Party was unhinged and deranged. They are saboteurs. Not fit to be holding elected offices in the government.
It’s actually amazing that President Obama signed up for a second term, but I guess he’s got the right motivation. He wants to do good.

Especially with the GOP refusing to invest in infrastructure, and the housing market’s sluggish movement. The markets are up today because they believe this could possibly mean a new stimulus (despite the fact that their Republican cohorts in Congress are demonizing stimulus plans). I think Bernanke was being realistic.

Hello Toders… I saw a woman being interviewed on cspan this am about the HC reform.
She stated that she is the first one on line trying to get one of the few seats alloted to regular folks
inside the court for tomorrow’s mandate discussion. What I found to be amazing is that she has been camping
out on the sidewalk since Friday thru very bad weather as she describes.
She explained that she is there in full support of the ACA because she has an adult son and daughter
who both have very chronic illnesses and therefore are not insurable. She is fighting for and supports
the law fully because of the benefits it would bring to her children. She came all the way from Atlanta
for this because it means so much to her and her family.
There are many more like her out in our country. I think that is why the crowd in front of the SC seems
to be PRO ACA and not against. I saw a few holding the tea party serpent flag but they were greatly
outnumbered. Good will prevail. I certainly believe that.
I agree. I believe I saw the same woman you’re referring too on one of my ABC local reports. The media might even lose interest in this story if it becomes clear that the vast majority of ordinary Americans support the ACA and want it upheld in the courts.

I was just looking at pictures of the protesters at the Supreme Court. I can’t believe some of these people have the right to vote in national elections. One sign says: “A doctor’s office is not found in nature. It’s not a national resource”. These people really are loony.
CSPAN3 to air oral arguments on ObamaCares ACA soon. At approximately 1pm est they will start the coverage. It will be available on-line and on CSPN3 (105 in chgo area).

Don’t tell me you’re all for the civil rights and equality for everyone and then argue against women’s reproductive rights, the rights of homosexuals to marry, or the right of a Muslim church to build a mosque in which to pray.
Oh, and you rocket scientists on the “professional left”… Just because you had some unrealistic fantasy that the President would fix eight years of backward, destructive policies within 90 seconds of taking office doesn’t mean the rest of us had the same stupid expectation. And the most ridiculous thing you do is then decide you’re going to punish the one guy who actually has gotten things moving in the right direction by not voting for him, or trying to weaken him. Result? You allowed the guys who fucked things up for eight years to gain back the House so they could proceed to spend two years doing nothing but get in the way. Awesome plan. What’s next? Tell folks on the left they should vote for Romney ’cause he’s no different? Oh, right, some of you have already done that. Idiots.”

Interesting hearing. I haven’t heard from Kagen yet, and we know Thom won’t say anything. Alito and Thomas are given anti-ACA votes, it’s the others who will determine this, including Roberts who has much to lose historically and politically. He’s Chief Justice and this decision reflects on him as does Citizens United and Bush v Gore. I’m not so sure he wants his legacy written on yet another wrong side of the issue ruling. Then again, he’s such the conservative, he may not see it that way. Or, he may wait to see if Kennedy or Scalia takes the plunge first, then jump in so as not to be the swing vote. Just my 2.
If he is such a conservative then he should see it exactly this way considering the individual mandate came straight out of the Heritage Foundation.
