Time: ….. Trayvon Martin’s parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton were on the long stretch of a turnpike between Orlando and Miami on March 23 when they heard President Obama’s poignant remark about their boy — that if he had a son, “he’d look like Trayvon.”

They say that was when they realized how far-reaching the impact of his controversial death, and their effort to get to the bottom of it, is. “It felt real warm to know our son’s name had been mentioned by the President of the United States and all over the nation and the world,” Martin says.

“His name is ringing all over the country, all over the nation, all over the world.” Fulton agrees, saying, “It showed us that even President Obama understands we need justice, that he understands our situation.” Adds Martin: “The nation is saying, What if — what if this was my son, what would I do?”

Charles Pierce: This picture, which ran on the front page of The New York Times this morning, and which accompanied the story about the opening of the arguments in the Supreme Court regarding the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, makes me as sad and despairing about the state of the country as I have been in an awfully long time. There are better places on the Intertoobz than this one to look either for a general overview of what may happen in the Court over the next three days – Ezra Klein’s joint did a masterful job this morning – …. but this picture makes the whole affair ring a little hollow already.

What exactly are these people praying for?

I see that the NYTimes headline today was about a poll showing how unpopular the Afghanistan war is. Well, DUH…why is this headlines? Obviously, they couldn’t really talk about the ACA – because many people, from ordinary citizens to doctors, showed up at the Supreme Ct yesterday to show their support for ObamaCares, outnumbering the ignorant Teabagger set that the media loves to highlight . I’m guessing the media wasn’t expecting that massive show of support – particularly when they have been pushing those stupid polls claiming that the ACA is unpopular. I truly believe that those polls are designed to elicit a negative response based on the way they’re asked in the first place.

      March 27, 2012 at 9:07 am

HF, that’s exactly what their polls are designed for. You can get any answer you want if you word the question the right way. The individual elements of ACA have always been popular, but you can twist a question about the whole bill in such a way that people people say no. It’s a scam. Besides as I said in the last thread, what difference does it make? SCOTUS is deciding on the constitutionality of the issue, not it’s popularity. If decisions went by popularity alone, we wouldn’t have the Citizen’s United ruling and Lily Ledbetter would have gotten justice the first time. The media is out of control on this issue and Trayvon’s murder. They are playing us for fools, as usual.

      • 56 hopefruit2
        March 27, 2012 at 9:19 am

Very well said Jackie. It’s so disgusting that media tries to get ahead of just about every issue to make our duly elected President look bad. Even the Trayvon Martin case – I now believe is being used in the media as a proxy for President Obama. Notice that since PBO spoke out, the media has changed it’s portrayal of Martin from an innocent kid to a menacing thug. The media has now decided that Trayvon is the enemy because Barack Obama is on his side. It’s so predictable, yet so sad how the media’s compulsive anti-Obama positions feature in just about every thing that is reported.

        • 57 jackiegrumbacher
          March 27, 2012 at 9:38 am

Yes, HF, but once you get what they’re doing, it doesn’t have the power to hurt you anymore. It’s like deciphering a code. They are so predictable, that they daily destroy their credibility, drip by drip. Our job is to make sure that more people understand the pattern. Once they’re hip to it, they can start laughing at it. I think we should try telling the media that we are on to them and we’re not only laughing at their antics, we’re making sure our friends and neighbors laugh too.

Hell, they had to do SOMETHING to get some coverage. If it hadn’t been for the “open mic” wink – wink, there would have been no coverage at all. The cynic is me says that the media got played on this one. As thoughtful and as smart as PBO is, I think that he assumes that mics are ALWAYS on.

Why would he say anything in private that he wouldn’t say in public. He’s just that kind of man. These excuses for journalists want to act like “oon, oooh, we caught him doing something wrong.” or ” we caught him unprepared” PBO is always prepared.

‘Why would he say anything in private that he wouldn’t say in public. He’s just that kind of man.’

THERE you go! I don’t believe these ‘journalists’ have ever met a president before who SAYS WHAT HE MEANS, before your face, behind your back, before/behind the mike, and sideways, so it’s understandable (though reprehensible) that they get all aflutter when they think they have a scoop. What IMO is a sad reflection on their lack of ability to ‘grow’ is the fact that after following his presidency for three full years they haven’t yet internalized that fact of his character. President Obama if a man of principles AND a man of his word. A smart journalist – an insightful one at any rate, would have used that mike quote to point out the fact that the President is serious in his intent to lower nuclear stock that he asked Russia to wait until after both country’s elections to refocus more fully on the process.

      • March 27, 2012 at 9:43 am

ROMNEY’S KNEE JERK ATTACK ON PBO “HOT MIC” COMMENT BITES HIM IN THE ARSE

It has been fascinating to watch the hysteria by the media and the GOP over the “hot mic” manufactured controversy. For me, it’s much ado about nothing. But what is even more fascinating is how badly it seems to be backfiring on Mitt Romney. Boy does he look like a lightweight. I bet before this blows over, Romney will wish he had kept his mouth shut. Because by opening his mouth he has given the DNC an opportunity to educate him on Russia.

Mitt Romney thinks he is qualified to be the leader of the free world. But his foreign policy chops are “severely” lacking. Try to imagine how Mitt Romney would have handled the trip to the Nuclear Summit in South Korea. How would he have interacted for foreign leaders from around the world? How would he have answered questions from U.S. and international journalists? Would he have engaged and inspired the university students?

Romney doesn’t know how to fake foreign policy acumen

    By Steve Benen

    ============================================

The key quote in the clip was Romney arguing, in reference to Russia, “[T]his is without question our number one geopolitical foe, they fight every cause for the world’s worst actors, the idea that [President Obama] has more flexibility in mind for Russia is very, very troubling indeed.”

For one thing, Obama didn’t talk about more flexibility for Russia; he talked about more flexibility for himself, urging Russian leaders to be patient until after the election season. There’s a big difference between the two.

For another, calling Russia the nation’s “number one geopolitical foe” has renewed a debate over whether Romney understands these issues as well as he thinks he does.

    ============================================

    • March 27, 2012 at 9:18 am

Next thing you know, he will be talking about seeing Putin’s head floating above the horizon. Apparently he doesn’t recognize that PBO has gotten Russia to cooperate on many levels, from nuclear weapons and material safeguards to sanctions against Iran.

And to call Russia our greatest geopolitical foe displays a massive ignorance. Apparently Romney still thinks the Cold War is raging.

    • 72 jackiegrumbacher
      March 27, 2012 at 9:19 am

The idea of world leaders trying to interact with Romney makes me laugh. Most of them would wonder at the US’s defective robot technology. Here would be someone who looked human, but couldn’t quite communicate human speech or reactions. While some of them would be stunned at the depths to which this country had sunk, bothers would be laughing behind his back. They would all also feel the danger of having a dumb Bush-like person in charge of the US once again and shudder for the future.

I sent a email to Wolf Blitzer and I ask him what was it that President Obama said that was so controversy when he was talking to Medvedev? Why is it that the media like you people at CNN like to try to make something out of nothing? What happen to the days when the media reported the news, but they didn’t have to make up the news, stir up controversy. The media has nothing more than second hand tabloid media. Thanks CNN.

They are participating in House hearings today. Here is what I’m not happy with—-at all. Protesters are then going to march to the White House. Who is trying to lay this at President Obama’s feet? This is not right and not helpful. This is a legal matter. The pressure should be on the Sanford, Fl. law enforcement authorities, the newly appointed AA police chief and the special prosecutor, to make a decision on this case. An increasing amount of damage is being done to all concerns the longer this drags on.

      • 121 hopefruit2
        March 27, 2012 at 9:28 am

The Sanford FL law enforcement has already determined that Zimmerman is innocent and they have bungled all the evidence enough at the local and state level to ensure that he is not prosecuted at the local level. Therefore, the case has to go to the DOJ/FBI for further investigation.

I don’t think they’re protesting President Obama – they are trying to ensure that the DOJ and FBI stay on top of this case. If it’s prosecuted as a hate crime, then it’s no longer a Sanford PD issue.

But I agree that the Sanford and FL authorities need to be put in jail.

        • March 27, 2012 at 10:01 am

Well—-they have new people in place in reaction to the inaction of those who were in charge originally. The only thing the fed. authorities can do is bring a hate crime, if that is what is determined, which authorities say is a difficult case to prove. I saw the former Miami police chief interviewed on CNN this a.m. who said that all police orgs. fought against this Stand Your Ground law (license to kill) when it was being proposed because they knew the legal problems it would present. He said that this case has grabbed the headlines but there have been dozens and dozens of killings that have fallen into this Stand Your Ground protection law—–all kinds of road rage incidents etc.—–snap decisions that had tragic fatal results because someone had a gun. And I am still curious and suspicious how this weeks’ old case got pulled into the spotlight. Anti-Obama forces couldn’t have designed a better scenario. They’ve been trying to force this kind of racial unrest since his ’08 campaign.

          • 123 hopefruit2
            March 27, 2012 at 10:18 am

The Miami Herald police chief is using a red herring. The Stand Your Ground law does not even apply in this case. Even Jeb Bush acknowledged that. Zimmerman’s words about being attacked by Trayvon simply aren’t credible.

JACKALS & GOP HELP PROVE PRESIDENT OBAMA’S POINT

I just love that video of President Obama explaining his comments about the overblown “hot mic” incident. He really makes the GOP and the jackals look petty and small. The jackals in their glee to carry water for the Republican Party have helped to prove one of the major points PBO was trying to make. There is no seriousness of purpose coming from the Republican Party.

    —————————————————

“The only way I get this stuff done is If I’m consulting with the Pentagon, with Congress, if I’ve got bipartisan support and frankly, THE CURRENT ENVIRONMENT IS NOT CONDUCIVE TO THOSE KINDS OF THOUGHTFUL CONSULTATIONS,” Obama told reporters following a meeting with the presidents of Russia and Kazakhstan. “I THINK THE STORIES YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN WRITING OVER THE LAST 24 HOURS IS PRETTY GOOD EVIDENCE OF THAT.”

Hope this is in the government’s argument this morning:

Act for the Relief of Sick & Disabled Seamen, July 1798

… It was a payroll tax that all sailors on private merchant ships had to pay, and in return, they were basically given access to a small public health-care system. But it was, in essence, a regulation against a form of inactivity: You were not allowed to not do something, in this case, pay for sailor’s health insurance.

Yet if it keeps up and the media loses interest, the Supreme Court members will still see that there are citizens who care enough to come out daily and that might influence one or two of the more recalcitrant republican judges. At least, I hope so.

      • March 27, 2012 at 12:28 pm

Apparently, the Supreme Court (Thomas, in particular) said that the demonstrations outside mean nothing to him/them – it’s just “noise”. I think they’ve forgotten that they are there to protect the laws and the Constitution – FOR THE PEOPLE whom they serve.

        • 146 vcprezofan2

You know Theo, Thomas might say it means nothing to HIM, but it might remind some of the others WHOM they are serving, particularly if those who can, stay the course. In the case of Thomas he has repeatedly made it clear that he is in the business of serving himself and his ‘lovely’ (meant as snark) wife, so I don’t expect much of anything from him.

Romney got his butt handed to him over his fake outrage at President Obama’s hot mic :-)

Medvedev took this shot at Romney: “I would recommend all U.S. presidential candidates … to do two things. First, when phrasing their position, one needs to use one’s head, one’s good reason, which would not do harm to a presidential candidate. Also, (one needs to) look at his watch: we are in 2012 and not the mid-1970s.”

    http://maddowblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/03/27/10885191-the-importance-of-romneys-accidental-candor

    Mr. Romney:
“One of the things I found in a short campaign against Ted Kennedy was that when I said, for instance, that I wanted to eliminate the Department of Education, that was used to suggest I don’t care about education,” Romney recalled. “So I think it’s important for me to point out that I anticipate that there will be departments and agencies that will either be eliminated or combined with other agencies….So will there be some that get eliminated or combined? The answer is yes, but I’m not going to give you a list right now.”

Romney’s answer goes a long way to explain why some conservatives have been reluctant to embrace his candidacy. They want a list. They want it to be long, they want it to be detailed, and they want a candidate who is not only willing to provide one but eager to campaign on it…. That’s not Mitt Romney. It never will be.

This is the same guy who implied that the President’s comment about needing space from Russia regarding negotiations on nuclear defense during this crazy election season meant he was hiding some sinister objectives until after the election, right?

SEOUL — White House press secretary Jay Carney responded here Tuesday to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s suggestion that Russia is the United States’s “number one geopolitical foe.”

“It seems a little inaccurate to make that statement about Russia,” Carney told reporters following a briefing on progress made by the Obama administration during the Nuclear Security Summit. “Russia is a country that we have been able to cooperate with on very important issues, even as we disagree with them on others, and that includes missile defense and Syria.”

Romney made his comments about Russia in response to the hot mic exchange President Barack Obama had with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in which Obama asked for “space” and “flexibility” on issues including missile defense until after the November election. Romney has since assailed those comments as “an alarming and troubling development,” one from which “I don’t think he can recover.”

Carney suggested that any assessments that put Russia atop a U.S. enemies list don’t reflect recent history as the two countries have come to cooperate on a wide range of issues and al-Qaida has risen as “so clearly the preeminent threat to the United States.”

At Mitt Romney’s proposed California beach house, the cars will have their own separate elevator.

There’s also a planned outdoor shower and a 3,600-square foot basement — a room with more floor space than the existing home’s entire living quarters.

Those are just some of the amenities planned for the massive renovation of the Romneys’ home in the tony La Jolla neighborhood of San Diego, according to plans on file with the city.

A project this ambitious comes with another feature you don’t always find with the typical fixer-upper: its own lobbyist, hired by Romney to push the plan through the approval process.

Work on the project has not yet begun.

But it may not help Romney — whose wealth has caused him trouble connecting with average folks — to be seen building a split-level, four-vehicle garage that comes with a “car lift” to transport automobiles between floors, according to 2008 schematic plans for the renovation obtained by POLITICO that are on file with the city of San Diego.

Doesn’t EVERYONE have an elevator for their cars???

SEOUL: The meeting between Prime Minister Yousuf raza Gilani and US President Barack Obama has concluded. During the meeting both sides agreed to cooperate against terrorism and regional peace.
Obama said the United States would continue to cooperate with Pakistan in all sectors and respected the country’s sovereignty.

The US president further said that neither the US nor Pakistan wanted to see terrorists get their hands on nuclear materials.

Goooooood Morning….everyone…GM and welcome back Chips ..you were missed….

someone suggested to watch Bill Press in the morning on current TV.(i think it was 57Female)….i did not have a whole lot of time to watch this morning….it is a radio format that is broadcasted over TV…like mike and mike on ESPN….

    i will give another listen/watch tomorrow….

are there other opinions about the program….

today the SC takes up the issue of the individual mandate…Rachel Maddow did an excellent piece on her program last nite pointing out how the mandate was once a republican point that was introduced as an alternative to the single payer option…

There have been folks here who have spoken often about the messaging around the ACA…and how there was not enough of a concerted effort to explain the tenets of the bill, esp given the deliberate misinformation and distortion of the bill by the President’s opponents….in addition to the Dems who ran away from the bill…

Santorum’s attacks on Romney over “RomneyCare” has also help to distort and sour the message…

i wonder how the mandate would have gone over if it was called “personal responsibility”..

it is good to see the campaign’s effort to step up their message about the ACA…

i must say that i do not know how this will all play out…but i do feel that altho it is not stated…that the President has a Plan B…

    Presssssssssssss ON!!!

I caught the end of Bill’s show this morning and I was pleased. As I’m doing half-my-work-at-home morning, Stephanie Miller is on my tee vee as well.

We need to support progressive media. We have to become a presence to counteract the lies and it all can’t be done on twitter. We need a media presence so even if it’s Keith (!), the very good Jennifer Granholm, we have to support them. Cenk is where I draw the line, but I’d rather have a progressive presence in the media than not.

In 2010, Republicans sold voters a bill of goods. Their message was simple: “Send us to Washington and we will focus on creating jobs.” But as soon as the election ended, they have set out to end Medicare as we know it while preserving tax loopholes for oil companies and the richest American. Even worse, they want seniors, college students, and middle class families to pay for their extreme agenda. That is not a jobs plan–that is a recipe for disaster.

    They lied. I’m SHOCKED!

Romney Backer Kevin McCarthy Warned Romney’s Mansion Would Be Trouble

Mitt Romney’s $12 million La Jolla teardown has long been a subject of mockery from his opponents this election cycle, but a Politico story revealing the extent of its luxury — a car elevator, its own lobbyist — is again thrusting the story into the news. Romney could have saved himself a lot of trouble if he had just checked in with recent endorser Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) first.

Back in August when the news of the house first broke, McCarthy warned that it would be trouble, telling a forum audience that quadrupling the size of Romney’s already swanky beach estate was a disastrous political move.

“He needs to stop staying in hotels and start staying with volunteers at every campaign stop,” McCarthy said at the time. “His job should be to take out the trash every day, and if that bag breaks, he needs to clean it up.”

THE GOP BREATHTAKING HYPOCRISY & THE INDIVIDUAL MANDATE

Last night Rachel Maddow did an excellent segment on the hypocrisy of the Republican Party objection to the healthcare mandate. With all of the breathless reporting from network and cable tv, it is shocking how much attention IS NOT being paid to the fact that the healthcare mandate was a Republican Party idea until President Obama embraced it. I don’t know, that seems like a very important piece of information that the American people should be made aware of.
