Ed Kilgore: Every day there’s at least one headline coming across the transom that doesn’t make you laugh, cry, cheer, or think, but simply scratch your head in puzzlement. Today’s winner is from Politico’s Lois Romano: “Ann Romney is the Romney Democrats Fear Most.”

…. Huh! Everybody thinks Ann Romney is a “rock star?” I did not know that. The “political arena” is all abuzz about her? Missed that, too; the buzzing must be confined to weekends, when I kinda check out from politics as much as possible.

…. If you read this long piece, however, it begins to appear that most of the buzzing Romano is hearing is coming from busy bees inside the Romney campaign itself….

….. Perhaps the most revealing thing about the Romneys as a team that Romano’s account mentions is that their handlers can’t decide whether Ann is more valuable on the road as a speaker, or behind the scenes as a steadying influence on the candidate. It sounds like Mitt needs a road manager and a psychologist as much as he needs a dazzling opening act. Indeed, he seems to be a very needy dude….

    Lawrence O’Donnell just interviewed Trayvon Martin’s parents and their lawyer. At the end of the interview Lawrence told Trayvon’s parents (paraphrasing) that he was awed by their dignity and grace. I could not agree more. As I watched the interview I was thinking the same thing.

      Yes, and I think the most bittersweet photo I’ve seen yet is the one where I think Trayvon’s dad is standing next to him, possibly kissing him on the check or at the very least hugging him. Makes me want to sob, thinking of his dad’s loss.

          the Supreme Court have made some decisions in the past…on two ends of the spectrum…

          The Dred Scot Decison was a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that people of African descent brought into the United States and held as slaves (or their descendants,whether or not they were slaves) were not protected by the Constitution and were not U.S. citizens…(the 14 amendment to the constitution overturned that by making all persons born within the United States and subject to its jurisdiction citizens of the United States.

          and then there was the Brown Vs the Board of Eduacation of 1954 (a year after i was born)…which was a landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court that declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students unconstitutional. The decision overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson decision of 1896 which allowed state-sponsored segregation.

          …this was a battle led by the NAACP…lead attorney…Thurgood Marshall….

          Mercy….the struggle continues….

      Yes the SC said that no matter what you are arrested for, no matter how minor you can be stripped searched legally! Now think about OWS, or going to a march or saying anything back to police, not paying a parking ticket….YOU CAN BE STRIP SEARCHED! Legally! I am sick to my stomach. Now we are really seeing how big our risk is for these radicals (Thomas, Alito, Roberts & Scalia) + Kennedy! We are looking at a sorry future for this country and we have not see the worst of it yet!

        This law is existing -so everything you mentioned has already been effect for decades. Someone recently challenged it and the court upheld it. That’s why we’re now hearing about it, but it has always been around.

          “The procedures endorsed by the majority [justices] are forbidden by statute in at least 10 states and are at odds with the policies of federal authorities. According to a supporting brief filed by the American Bar Association, international human rights treaties also ban the procedures.

          The federal appeals courts had been split on the question, though most of them prohibited strip-searches unless they were based on a reasonable suspicion that contraband was present. The Supreme Court did not say that strip-searches of every new arrestee were required; it ruled, rather, that the Fourth Amendment’s prohibition of unreasonable searches did not forbid them. ”

          If appears that the SC took it further. The ruling says that the police departments have the absolute right to strip search someone one or more times. If someone is transferred from one station to another that person can be strip searched again.

            Rachel dealt with the SC ruling on her show tonight. If you can watch a rerun of her show a video, I think it’s worth it. She clearly stated that this is a big deal and so far is under the radar.

Last week, when he was hawking Rachel’s book, he was using his very own brand of hyperbole to imply her book was probably the best thing he’d read since The Bible. Made me wonder how he reacts every time his wife puts a new cereal box in front of his wet, spitty lips in the morning, and it has new words on it, talk about the big O, eh?

    Soooo….has PBO’s statement about ACA been discussed already? There’s been a lot of speculation, but here’s what the man himself had to say today:

    With respect to health care, I’m actually — continue to be confident that the Supreme Court will uphold the law. And the reason is because, in accordance with precedent out there, it’s constitutional. That’s not just my opinion, by the way; that’s the opinion of legal experts across the ideological spectrum, including two very conservative appellate court justices that said this wasn’t even a close case.

    I think it’s important — because I watched some of the commentary last week — to remind people that this is not an abstract argument. People’s lives are affected by the lack of availability of health care, the inaffordability of health care, their inability to get health care because of preexisting conditions.

    The law that’s already in place has already given 2.5 million young people health care that wouldn’t otherwise have it. There are tens of thousands of adults with preexisting conditions who have health care right now because of this law. Parents don’t have to worry about their children not being able to get health care because they can’t be prevented from getting health care as a consequence of a preexisting condition. That’s part of this law.

    Millions of seniors are paying less for prescription drugs because of this law. Americans all across the country have greater rights and protections with respect to their insurance companies and are getting preventive care because of this law.

    So that’s just the part that’s already been implemented. That doesn’t even speak to the 30 million people who stand to gain coverage once it’s fully implemented in 2014.

    And I think it’s important, and I think the American people understand, and the I think the justices should understand, that in the absence of an individual mandate, you cannot have a mechanism to ensure that people with preexisting conditions can actually get health care. So there’s not only a economic element to this, and a legal element to this, but there’s a human element to this. And I hope that’s not forgotten in this political debate.

    Ultimately, I’m confident that the Supreme Court will not take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress. And I’d just remind conservative commentators that for years what we’ve heard is, the biggest problem on the bench was judicial activism or a lack of judicial restraint — that an unelected group of people would somehow overturn a duly constituted and passed law. Well, this is a good example. And I’m pretty confident that this Court will recognize that and not take that step.

    Q You say it’s not an abstract conversation. Do you have contingency plans?

    PRESIDENT OBAMA: I’m sorry. As I said, we are confident that this will be over — that this will be upheld. I’m confident that this will be upheld because it should be upheld. And, again, that’s not just my opinion; that’s the opinion of a whole lot of constitutional law professors and academics and judges and lawyers who have examined this law, even if they’re not particularly sympathetic to this particular piece of legislation or my presidency.

    I agree, Mr. President.

        PBO — a constitutional scholar — wrapped up the issue in one, concise paragraph. This is one of, if not the absolute, worst Supreme Courts in history, so it remains to be seen if they are going to cement their dismal legacy by taking this unconstitutional step, or if they will play their correct role in American governance, and thereby somewhat redeem themselves..

        I don’t know why everyone thinks that is such a powerful statement. There are some laws that need to be overturned and the Supreme Court is our last recourse for overturning laws even ones that were passed by majorities.

          The argument the plaintiffs are making is that the law is unconstitutional — not that it is wrong, per se. PBO is answering the unconstitutionality argument — plus (in the many paragraphs which make up today’s statement) he is saying that the law is right and that it has had positive, real world impact.

          I think it was an extremely powerful statement.

      This statement is a thing of beauty that should have people standing in awe of the president’s brilliance. This is an answer to a question, not a prepared speech, and it is flawless. The subliminal message: don’t mess with this and don’t mess with me because you will find yourself in a world of hurt. We take PBO’s intelligence for granted because it appears to effortless with him. But imagine GWB speaking like this or consider how Romney or any of the R candidates could answer a question this sensitive and complex without clutching, twisting their tongues and uttering idiotic word salads. We are truly blessed.

    i’m looking at my local ABC news and there seems to be some controversy surrounding the Maryland winner of the Megamillions jackpot. A woman (mom of 7 who works at a local McDonalds) has said she has the winning ticket, but seems unsure when they interviewed her on camera. Some of her coworkers are complaining that she is pretending to be unsure because she is trying to stiff them their winnings since they all pitched in as part of a pool to buy the tickets. LOL!

      I hope she gets a lawyer and stay away from the press. As far as the co-workers, why wouldn’t they a copy of the tickets that were purchased for the group BEFORE the drawing even took place? That’s how we handled it in our office pool. One person purchased and gave everyone in the pool of copy of the tickets on the day before the drawing. She also purchased for other family members and herself. We always knew what group’s tickets were.

      My office pooled our money together. The office manager collected our money, took down our names, bought the tickets, scanned them onto a file and e-mailed a copy to everyone in the office. Now if someone came forward claiming they won and with their own tickets, we can just check the file and verify their story. There is also the time and date on the ticket to help verify this story. What happened at the McDonald’s? No one kept track of this stuff? Who was in charge of pooling this money together and buying the ticket?

    Lawrence O’Donnell had a stellar rewrite tonight. He called out the national media and press corps who cover Romney and don’t ask him pertinent questions about his religion and don’t demand honesty from him like they do all the time with PBO. They raked PBO over the coals for the words his pastor uttered, they raked PBO over the coals for supposedly not attending church while in the WH (which is a lie by the way) and for supposedly waging a war with religion (another lie) yet they don’t turn their laser focus on Romney.

    Lawrence also called out Romney for practicing the tenets of Mormonism which included the teachings of Brigham Young who said that if they slept with black women they would die. What kind of messed up BS teaching is that? All it does is breed hate. Romney basically avoided that question during a town hall event and cut off the questioner. Lawrence pointed out that Romney excoriates President Obama over religion all the time yet he runs away from a question about his own religion. Hypocrisy, thy name is Willard Mitt Romney.

      Lawrence also said that the Mormon church only reversed its racist stance on blacks when Romney was 31 years old. Before that time, he fully believed the teachings of Brigham Young, and lived by them. Lawrence said any other politician not being coddled by the media would have been run out of town with that kind of history – believing and being an active member of a church (for 31 years) that practiced racist teachings, and now trying to run for President as an upstanding citizen? Unbelievable.

      The sad thing is that the religion isn’t the problem – religion really isn’t a requirement to be President. He’s got a right to believe what he wants to believe. But – he shouldn’t be hiding those beliefs. It’s not a credible act from someone who wants to lead the entire free world. It speaks to his character. It’s not the religion, per se. It’s the fact that he is pretending that he is hiding who he really is, all the while acting like President Obama is somehow “the other”. Romney has never once defended President Obama’s right to religious freedom and the need to separate religion and politics. In fact, Romney’s been lying all over the country, claiming that President Obama is declaring a war on religious freedom.

      Lawrence O’Donnell also said that the Mormon teachings now say that racism is a sin, and anyone espousing racism is basically damned. Well, what about when Romney’s son was telling birther jokes? Or when Romney himself has implied that the President is un-American, appealing to the racists in the GOP base (and elsewhere)? They are hypocrites.

      So that was the Palin assessment of President Obama that the Today Show was urgently promoting. I’m just shocked! Stunned! I thought for sure she was going to endorse Obama and call him a great and gifted president who deserves to be re-elected. Guess I was wrong.     As a loyal viewer of the Today Show, I refuse to watch today. The only reason Sarah Palin is on, is because Katie Couric on on GMA this week. I refuse to help them in the ratings. I cannot forget the nastiness she brought to the campaign trail.

      I have never been a loyal viewer, but I would tune in every now and then, specially when someone I wanted to see was going to be on the show, but like you I did not watch that hateful witch this morning, and you are so right she was, is responsible for alot of nastiness on and off the campaign trail. She started with this disrespect of POTUS. Shame on the Today Show, but what we see and know is how low all media folks will go for ratings.

    Whatever Palin says against the President will be the best endorsement he can get for 2/3 of the American people. She opens her mouth and garbage spills out, and people don’t like her, and certainly don’t admire her. People like Katie Couric, she just wasn’t the right person on the CBS evening news. She’s going to have a talk show in the fall I understand, but I wonder how long before one of the morning shows picks her up again? She just makes mornings seem brighter.
