NYT Editorial: President Obama’s fruitless three-year search for compromise with the Republicans ended in a thunderclap of a speech on Tuesday, as he denounced the party and its presidential candidates for cruelty and extremism. He accused his opponents of imposing on the country a “radical vision” that “is antithetical to our entire history as a land of opportunity.”

….The speech was the first time that Mr. Obama linked Mr. Romney, by name, to his party’s dishonest budget and discredited trickle-down policies. As Mr. Obama pointed out, Mr. Romney described as “marvelous” a budget that would drastically cut student financial aid, medical research, Head Start classrooms and environmental protections. Mr. Obama further ridiculed the budget’s deficit-cutting goal as “laughable” because it refuses to acknowledge the need for new revenues.

…. Mr. Obama provided a powerful signal on Tuesday that he intends to make this election about the Republican Party’s failure to confront, what he called, “the defining issue of our time”: restoring a sense of economic security while giving everyone a fair shot, rather than enabling only a shrinking number of people to do exceedingly well. His remarks promise a tough-minded campaign that will call extremism and dishonesty by name.

Hadley Freeman (The Guardian): And so, as widely dreaded, the Republican primaries have dragged on into April. Well played, everyone! In a country so ruthless that TV shows can get cancelled after just one episode, maintaining such a long-running entertainment programme is an achievement. Admittedly, this is largely due to the fact that all of its featured stars are so uninspiringly bad….

…. one must not underestimate the impulse of Romney’s own party towards the ABR tactic – Anyone But Romney – one that has led to a sex-obsessed homophobe in a sweater vest and the Pillsbury Doughboy, AKA Newt Gingrich, being touted as sorta serious contenders for a presidential election …. Rick Santorum is predictably digging his heels in, like a toddler refusing to go to bed even though it’s at least two hours after his bed time, showing the deluded tenacity one would expect of a grown man who believes that restricting access to contraception reduces unwanted pregnancies….

Nevertheless, it does increasingly look as if, after all the bloodletting and financial expenditure of the past months, the Republicans will end up with the nominee who was always going to be the nominee. Hasn’t this been an excellent use of everyone’s time and energy?

But if you think this signifies the end of the bursts of crazy fun Santorum and Gingrich provided, don’t worry! Despite the vice-presidency being the most high-profile and pointless job outside the royal family, the Republicans have a knack for picking some doozies as running mates. There was Ken doll Dan Quayle, who thought he was JFK and couldn’t spell potato; Dick Cheney, the human Heart of Darkness; and of course, Sarah Palin, who needs no elaboration…..

APD, CNBC, & WSJ are reporting that March Jobs numbers are as follows: Construction added 13000 jobs, Manufacturing added 23,000 jobs. These are all up from February’s job numbers. So that’s good. They also say that the private sector added 209,000 jobs in March. So anyway anyhow, looks like the jobs numbers on Friday will be good.

Howard Kurtz is a liar, President Obama cares about the poor and middle class, Romney doesn’t give a darn about either one. His whole life has shown that. While Romney was hanging around with his Bain Capitol buddies firing the middle class, while making money for him and his buddies, Barack Obama was being a community organizer, trying to help the poor. When Barack Obama got out of college he could have done the same thing Romney did, but he choose to help poor people. You know the people Mitt the lying Mormon Romney said he doesn’t care about.

      PBO drank GOP’s milkshake (again)

It is especially fun to watch various Republicans complain about the “tone” of the speech. That’s really laughable. For over three years the Republican Party has been obstructing progress and sabotaging the economic recovery. They have questioned and criticized every move that PBO has made. They have been relentless in their opposition to common sense ideas that they supported in the past. They have questioned his legitimacy to even be president. Every one of the clown car presidential candidates has made disgusting accusations about PBO. Not to mention the dishonest ads, right wing radio hate and 24X7 disinformation from Fox. So as soon as PBO gives them and the water carrying feckless media “a bit of truth” they howl like stuck pigs. They are incensed. They are outraged. So basically, they can dish it but they can’t take it. The moral depravity of the Republican Party never ceases to amaze me.

Well stated, LH, and they’d better get used to it because yesterday’s speech was just the opening shot across the bow that the president means business. PBO has been waiting through the primaries pulling together his resources and forming his battle plants and now they know they will not be able to get away with their lies anymore without fierce pushback. They’re scared because, as usual, they underestimated PBO thinking he was going to be too nice and conciliatory to fight back and because they’ve been getting away with their crap-spewing for so many months. Well, they ain’t seen nothing yet. He’s smarter, tougher, more resilient and more determined than all of them put together. And he’s going to eat all them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If Romney is stupid enough to tap Ryan for VP, Jo Biden will pour him over his ice cream for dessert.

Good morning folks. We knew all along that the President was saving this speech for this moment. He named names, he let them know he was finished trying to meet them half-way.
He was dead serious in his tone and they know he is not playing with them and they are scared. That is why the memo went out to say he is harsh. They haven’t seen anything yet. Buckle up for the ride.
Ryan as VP sounds like a good plan. Buckle up for that ride too. Biden will just stand there and let him talk then pour him over his ice cream. Good anology from you.

It just illustrates that the GOP bullies and blowhards can dish it out but cannot take it. That NYT editorial is great, the GOP and Supreme Court are on notice that President Obama will call out their dishonesty and extremism without hesitation. The truth can defend itself, but still needs to be spoken and President Obama is the ideal spokesman.

hopefruit2, that is exactly what is the media problem with the President speech. I found no fault with the speech, I am ready to see POTUS take on that lying flip flopper. I want to see what I can fine out about Mitt’s religion. Watching Lawrence O’Donnell the other night made me want to find out about this curse of darkness on black people, and if a white have sex with a black he or she will die. If the right wing haters can question POTUS faith, question if he is a Muslim, then I want to know what Mitt true beliefs are.

At one of the Ryan/Romney events yesterday during question time a young fellow was trying to question him about one aspect of the Mormon religion. Romney curtly brushed him off and said he wasn’t going to talk about religion. I saw it because I had expected to see Michelle Obama. Otherwise I don’t listen to him (too many lies that upset me). That kind of treatment is likely to draw more attention to it rather than quell inquiries.

I have a suspicion that Nikki Haley might be among one of those being considered by the GOP to be Romney’s running mate. ABC’s Nightline yesterday featured a “We the GOPMedia LOVES US SOME NIKKI” segment, so they may be testing her out. Romney needs someone who can help him with women and Latinos. Paul Ryan is not that person, neither is Santorum, Huckabee, or Christie.

    • April 4, 2012 at 8:57 am

How does Nikki Haley help with Latinos? She signed an Arizona-style law last spring cracking down on illegal immigration.

    • 47 itgurl_29

She’s not Latino. She’s East Indian but claims that she’s white. It’s pretty sad. She’s even more of a sellout than Bobby Jindal. He changed his name but at least he not ashamed of being Indian.

Oil Falls a Second Day on Supply as Fed May Halt Stimulus

    ———————————–

Oil dropped for a second day amid rising crude stockpiles and speculation the Federal Reserve may refrain from more monetary stimulus to boost the U.S. economy.

Futures slipped as much as 1.2 percent in New York, extending yesterday’s drop. An American Petroleum Institute inventory report after the market closed showed an increase in crude supplies three times larger than analysts expect a separate report from the Energy Department to show later today. Federal Reserve minutes from a March policy meeting showed it plans to hold off from increasing monetary accommodation unless economic expansion falters.

“I don’t think we really have a problem with supply right now,” said Sintje Boie, an analyst at HSH Nordbank in Hamburg who predicts Brent crude will stay at about $120 a barrel until the middle of the year. “We’ll only see oil prices between $130 and $150 if there’s an escalation in the conflict with Iran. But I think we’ll get some kind of diplomatic solution.”

Democrats added 2,544 registered voters in March, or nearly three times the 954 for Republicans, according to the Nevada secretary of state’s office. The bump boosted the Democrats’ advantage over Republicans to 48,654 registered voters statewide out of a total of more than 1 million. “Every time we open an office, the energy is high, and we get great volunteers,” said Aoife McCarthy, the Nevada press secretary for Obama’s campaign. “We’re just getting more aggressive.” //

    This from First Read:

*** Scott Brown embraces Obama: It’s not every day you see this kind of press release from a Republican senator: “Two major pieces of legislation introduced by U.S. Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) will be signed into law by President Obama at White House ceremonies this week. As the first to introduce both the STOCK Act and crowdfunding legislation in the Senate, Senator Brown was invited and will attend both signing ceremonies. ‘I’m honored to receive these invitations from President Obama and I look forward to standing next to him as he signs these bills into law.’” So we’ve seen likely Democratic opponent Elizabeth Warren star in Obama’s campaign documentary. And now Brown is shouting from the mountain top that he’ll be standing next to Obama at signing ceremonies this week. Brown has two major hurdles to overcome if he’s going to win a full term: One, he’s trying to win as a Republican in a blue state during a presidential year. And two, how does he avoid getting defined by Romney? Well, we see what Brown is TRYING to do, have photo-ops with Romney’s opponent. Here’s betting we see Brown use his appearances at these signing ceremonies in TV ads while trying like mad to avoid appearances with Romney.

Good morning TOD family. And I use the word “family” intentionally. The longer this site goes on, the more feel of family I sense. We has shared sad moments (recent deaths ), glad moments (collegekay’s winning the fundraising), and everything in between. There is a true sense of belonging at this site, more than just about any other I regularly visit (BWD’s site was another and I hope she restarts it at some point in the future).

We do get into our little intrafamily squabbles at times, but that is to be expected. And even when that happens, even when soemone might become discouraged and ready to leave, we rally around that person, as recently evidenced.

There will be a lot of tense moments over the coming months. Some of us may feel discouraged at times, fearful at times, disgusted at times. But that is when we, as a family, need to rally around and support those people. It is sometimes easy to criticize and more difficult to accept differences. Yet it is crucial that we all stay together.

If we blindly demand total agreement from each other, than we are no better than the lock step Republicans. We are family, but like all families, we are not clones of each other. The most important thing is not that we agree on everything, but that, at the end, when it becomes crunch time, we are there for each other and for the President.

So your words are especially good to hear and I give thanks for everyone here who is pitching in to help re-elect PBO in whatever way they can, be it dollars, registering voters, phonebanking, canvassing, tabling, tweeting, emailing or providing rides to vote or refreshments for OFA HQs around the country.

Thank you japa21 for your words this morning. :)

    • April 4, 2012 at 10:10 am

Perfect Japa, just perfect. We can be certain there are tense days ahead, and days when some of us will feel like throwing in the towel, but they’re the days when we just have to dig a little deeper and help encourage each other. And we do, like you say, have to resist being sharp with others just because they express differing views. As I always say, the only people I don’t want on the blog are those who oppose PBO and those whose only intention is to try to demoralize his supporters – and we’ve had a few of those here over time. But all genuine supporters of PBO are welcome here, and we should – hard as it is sometimes – try to remember we’re all on the same side. Thanks Japa.

Thank you japa21 for your encouraging words to start our day. We are part of the TOD family that supports this president and will do everything we can to get him re-elected. We are here to learn from one another, challenge, and support each other.

Love this ^^japa21. You are so right. I am one of those with a recent death, and I have been overwhelmed with all the expressions of support from this TOD family, so I totally agree with your post. This is a great place to go, and reading everyone’s comments everyday has made me feel close to so many people. Also seeing those same people on twitter is like greeting old friends. It’s all good. I am so proud of us, of President Obama and Michelle O, and their kids. I loved PBO’s speech yesterday, he expressed the mockery I have been feeling so well, the unleashed anger, the sense of incredulity over what the GOP is trying to do. It made me feel satisfied. PBO has this, and I have his back!

I saw Rev. Al too. I also saw that pastor and his wife who introduce FLOTUS when she was in Florida the last time. Did you hear POTUS speaking? He sounded like he wanted to do alittle preaching there.

I thought that was hilarious! That was a really great read….and I appreciate the dry humor….or should I say, HUMOUR:)

      • 129 vcprezofan2
        April 4, 2012 at 10:12 am

Yep. Dry HUMOUR gets me every time, part of the reason stand-up comedy mostly doesn’t appeal to me. ;) Don’t you just love her descriptions of the pros and cons for some of the prospective veep wannabes? (Having been schooled under the British system myself, I find I use their spelling unconsciously more often than not. )

        • April 4, 2012 at 10:15 am

The Pros and Cons had me weeping! eg

          Bob McDonnell

Cons: He’s the muppet who supported the clause that stated all women in Virginia who wanted an abortion would have to be raped by a probe first. He eventually insisted that the bill be changed, thus annoying both anti-abortion and pro-choice groups. Yeah! That guy!

Random fact: Now known as Bob Vaginal Probe McDonnell. With a name like that, I bet he always has a date on a Friday night. Amirite ladeez or amirite?

          Rob Portman

          Cons: Could cure insomnia.

Random fact: So boring there are no random facts.

            April 4, 2012 at 10:26 am

She did get giggles out of me, though I confess I didn’t get the ‘amirite’ bit. Is it ‘Am I right, ladies’?

I particularly liked how she cut to the heart of the matter with truth. There really is no need to make stuff up with these guys as they provide such a wealth of material, all unprovoked!

        • 134 desertflower
          April 4, 2012 at 10:21 am

Yes…that was so perfect:) Wish that our own “journalists” would get the big stick out of their collective asses and do this:) Even in jest, she was more spot on than our own “so called” reporters. Pretty damn sad.

          • 135 vcprezofan2
            April 4, 2012 at 10:34 am

‘she was more spot on than our own “so called” reporters. Pretty damn sad.’

I agree. Sadder still IMO that our reporters DO NOT GROW! I can’t think of one Press Corps type who has matured in his questioning. It’s ‘criminal’ to me that they would be at the heart of the message day after day, in a position where they could get answers to clarify their thoughts and educate their viewers AND THEY HAVEN’T. SUCH A WASTE, IMO!

            • April 4, 2012 at 11:24 am

Here’s the thing- our expectation of these journalists/reporters/hosts etc, is the key factor for our continual disappointment and anguished response, as we expect a high standard and some semblance of truthtelling, but the reality is we are flooded with low or even no standards, propaganda, lies and sensationalism.
Right about now I have no expectation whatsoever, therefore I am never shocked or surprised at how low they can go..and will go.

              • 137 vcprezofan2
                April 4, 2012 at 11:55 am

Don’t worry, LZ, I am more ‘hopeful’ than anguished. Not ‘hopeful’ as in placing great expectations on them. but more in the sense that I’ll be pleasantly surprised if one or two of them show growth. Part of my ‘problem’ is that I have long held a strong belief that, though we all have different learning curves, everyone can learn AND THESE GUYS AND GALS ARE MESSING WITH IT!!!! Added to that is a certain reluctance to concede that so many American reporters got their jobs on some other basis other than merit. If they didn’t, then I find myself questioning American educational standards. I mean, seriously, the reporters, like the politicians cannot regularly effect a nuanced debate, argument, or report! [TODville, in spite of your American exceptionalism, please forgive me my criticisms this one time. I know ALL Americans do not fall into this category; these guys just happen to be on constant display.]

(CBS News) — President Obama last year launched a line of attack against Republicans in Congress called “we can’t wait.” He used the line repeatedly to blast Republicans for blocking his ideas to revive the still sputtering U.S. economy, setting up a narrative reminiscent of President Harry Truman’s famous 1948 campaign against the so-called “Do Nothing Congress.”
It now appears he can’t wait for the Republicans to finish up their nominating process either. While front-runner Mitt Romney is increasingly likely to become the party’s nominee, he is still fighting former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum for the Republican nomination.
    But the…

HIdee all yous O’s!!!! A great getting up day again TODSters!!! Just saw FLOTUS from her Biggest Loser appearance. It looked like it was a good segment. She said ‘Can a 1st lady get a towel?’ Funny. Also just got a chance to see PBO speak at the AP function, good stuff right thar. Time for my morning nature run. My #2 visiting home for awhile. Gotta show her how to do a 5K, she thinks she can take me (she can, that’s why I plan to fake an injury). See ya later!!1

Yeah. I have tried to watch the show several times (he was on last week before the big ‘announcement’) and in every stinkin’ show there has been something whiny-left that has pissed me off. His remark last night about all the young voters he’s talked to(!) who are not enthused and this will be a ‘passionless’ election. read an effing poll about voter enthusiasm. Look at an effing picture of the crowds who greet PBO and actually listen to an actual speech and the crowd reaction, instead of getting your one soundbite from CNN.

I’m very pleased with Bill Press and Stephanie Miller in the morning, but I have to tell Current that people like Spitzer who choose to depress voter turnout, call it ‘independence’, and relegate us to minority status, are not worth my time. It is 8 months before the most important election of our lifetime and I refuse to watch anyone who doesn’t understand the stakes.

Have been on Skype for an hour and a half with my lovely daughter in Australia, so only a quick check in, Hello and byeBye, I’ll pop back in over the day. I think I’ll have a bit of space today. Oh my goodness Chips! Thank you so much for posting the photo our The President with one of my sheroes, Nichelle Nichols!

She is the reason I grew up wanting to become an astronaut! Okay, so the dream is unfulfilled, but it’s what gave me a deep appreciation for science and pretty much anything related to space exploration. Something I hope to pass on to my young family members.
