In the afternoon, President Obama will host President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil for meetings at the White House.
Tuesday
The President will travel to Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton for an official event on the economy. While in Florida, the President will also attend campaign events. He will return to Washington, DC, in the evening.
Wednesday and Thursday
The President will attend meetings at the White House.
Friday
The President will travel to Cartagena, Colombia, to attend the Summit of the Americas. He will return to Washington, DC, on Sunday.

In an interview with Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Bob Schieffer, host of Face the Nation on CBS, falsely claimed that the Affordable Care Act required religiously-affiliated institutions — including churches — to “buy birth control pills for their employees.” In fact, churches are exempted from the mandate, and contraceptive services will be provided by health insurance plans, not religiously-affiliated employers.
Schieffer is misinforming his viewers when he says that the mandate for contraceptive coverage applies to churches. The rule regarding contraceptive coverage specifically exempts actual houses of worship

As Sibelius made clear in her statement, Catholic universities and hospitals aren’t going to be buying birth control for their employees any more than they will be buying blood pressure tests and dialysis. Institutions that provide health insurance as an employment benefit are offering just that – health insurance. When a person with employer-provided coverage goes to the doctor or pharmacist, we normally think of their bills as being paid for not by their employer but by their health insurance plan.

There is no excuse for such inaccuracies. A simple search at whitehouse.gov would have provided all the details he needed.

I agree. There should be no religious test to hold public office and that includes in the decision making of the voters. Still, it’s hard for me to muster much sympathy for Mittens. As a mormon, fully aware of the history of his people chased and murdered as they fled west, Willard should have known better than to throw in with the party of intolerance. The religious right’s insistence on taking a bottle of white out to the 1st amendment should have been a deal breaker for him. When the evangelicals in his own base stab him in the back for not being exactly like them in every way, it will be him something he should have seen coming.
DF–Maybe it’s becuase I live in the bible belt and I have had religious laws forced down my throat for years–I think the religion a person practices should be vetted just as any other area of someone’s identity when they run for office. If people could believe and not try to force their beliefs on others then religion shouldn’t factor into politics. Unfortunately, we live in an imperfect world and the “Leaders” of this country in the oval office (in the past) and in congress many times do not seperate church and state. I want to know who I am voting for. Am I voting for someone who will be unable to seperate their personal beliefs when making decisions affecting me? Religion is the great divider and the more I know about a candidates religion the better prepared I am to make voting decisions.

Thank you, Theo. I was telling LunarSea that while am immeasurably thankful for all the help and everyone’s kindness, I also feel a deep sense of guilt for being in this situation and accepting the money.
Please know that I did not ask Miss Pat to put me in a hotel. I would never dream of doing that. She insisted. She actually packed me up and moved me out of her apartment! LOL! I told her, you must really want to get rid of me! Of course she didn’t. I was just teasing her. She lives in a one bedroom subsidized apt and not even her daughter can live there. She was hoping that LDS might have had a spare room so that I could stay with her, but when we met LDS for lunch on Friday, she said she had no room because her family was staying with her.
The hotel I’m in is the cheapest we could find on a holiday weekend, and it’s one Miss Pat knows because she and her daughter had stayed here once.
I told Miss Pat that I would give her the money from what has been donated to me, but she told me no. She said that she’d spoken to Chip and Chip was planning to raise separate funds to pay Miss Pat.
However, whatever the TOD family thinks is best is what I will do.

Your choice would be to do without or pay through the nose for subpar benefits, and sure uncertainty that it would be there if heaven forbid you should need it.

It’s a sure testimony to his drive and determination, smartness about staff choices and creativity and critical thinking that so much has been acommplished. I was just wondering today how much more could have been done on our domestic and foreign fronts if we’d shown some UNITY and patriotism in what is one of our most trying times. Foreign front we face questions about many countries in the middle east including Iran and Isreal. We’ve been dealing with that and N Korea for years now! It’s unreal how republicans try to lay this out as though it just showed up on President Obama’s door!
I watched for the second time Amb. Rice’s testimony for the UN budget. She is a dynamo, and so knowledgeable. She’s able to stand her ground with a grace and dignity unmatched by many. It was a thing of beauty to see her not allowing the administration to be defined by some of the bufoonze(sp) in congress. She gave example of the ways in witch the Obama admin has benefited Isreal with admittance to various organizations, as well as contribut more to it’s security while pressing for a peace with the palestinians.
The republicans want us to cut funding for Unesco despite the good it does around the world because of it’s support of a home for the palestinians. She pointed out that Isreal has not cut it’s ties, because as she explained most eloquently many times- you do not cut off your nose to spite your face (my words
) Bless her all who work for diplomatic solutions first for our many issues! She would make a fine Secretary of State!

Back during the Clinton years I had a chance to take my daughter to the White House Easter Egg Roll celebration – it is one of my best memories. We got up super early and drove downtown, got in line, were told by the Park Service ranger there was almost no chance of getting in, but we persisted and we got our timed ticket for a few hours later. We had a fancy breakfast at a hotel downtown, went to one of the art museums, then back to the White House. For anyone who lives in the DC area, even if you don’t get into the event, you can watch from the sidewalk in the front of the WH – on the plus side, you wouldn’t have waited for eons in line for the security check (hard to do with little kids; back in my day it wasn’t that brutal).
I just read how Emmanual Cleaver said that it’s “wrong” for the Democrats to use the term “war on women.” If this were not such a critical election season, I’d say primary his ass, because he has put his foot in his mouth almost as much as the Republicans have!

If Melissa Harris-Perry continues the way she started her shows, she may not be on long. I have heard so many complaints about her show and the pre-dominant comment is that loads of people are turning her off because she seems to bring on lots of Republican hacks and will not confront their lies and push back.

It’s just me personally, but I’m glad that MHP allows these Republican stooges and allows them to spew their insanity. Look at what has happened to Keith Olberloon, who invited NO ONE who disagreed with his ideology and thought only his opinion mattered. We need the stupidity of Republicans exposed and not pushed under the rug, and the last thing we need is an emoprog echo chamber like it is with Keith Olberloon, Cenk Uygar, Jane Hamsher, Glenn Greenwald and others.
It’s one thing to expose the Republican lies and stupidity by politely presenting them with the credible but easily understood facts to counter their spew – it’s a completely different thing, however, to just allow them to make all kinds of wild claims knowing that low info voters might actually believe what they say and base their voting decisions on lies and RW propaganda. I believe that’s where people have issues with MHP. Her stance is way too intellectual as if she’s in the classroom and needs to stand back and hear “both sides” of an argument. She needs to stop being professor and start being the host of a nationally televised political talk show.

If you think that MHP is too much of a softball with the right, then you haven’t seen Fox News, or David Gregory when they are practically slobbering over the Republicans.
And personally, I believe we have to delve away from the culture of “bruising the other side,” that’s the culture that Olberloon promoted and it’s destroyed his career and his credibility. I’m glad that MHP is a teacher and allows both sides to talk and present their ideals, that’s the kind of culture that our President wants us to have, and frankly, we should be embracing it.
David Gregory and Fox News explicitly promote the Republican agenda. I am not comparing MHP to FOX NEWS and Gregory, I’m comparing her to what I believe an objective political show host should be. I never said or implied that MHP should be a female Keith Olbermann. Presenting facts to counter lies doesn’t mean you’re “bruising” the other side.
I don’t have a problem with hearing both sides, but I do have a problem is letting Republicans spit lie after lie and she just sit there, saying nothing. This is not an honest debate and hasn’t been in years. She should know that by now. I like her very much, I enjoy some of the discussions, but she’s being very naive and we can’t have that now. Like it or not, many political shows are going to have their share of Republicans… all of them have at one point or another, except for the emoprog echo chamber like Olberloon who allowed NO ONE who countered his point of view. Even Rachel Maddow has had Republicans on: from Rand Paul to even the racist Pat Buchanan.
I don’t have a problem with a show having a Republican guest. I do have a problem with a host allowing their show to be used as a platform for GOP manufactured propaganda at the expense of our democracy.
Yup. It’s one thing to invite the thugs for getting their point of view (which I frankly hate since they have monopolized all the other fucking channels and shows). It’s another thing being stupidly dumb by not pushing back against their lies, slurs and insults.
Obviously, MHP is losing viewers for a reason. A very good one at that. In an election year, people want information – not lies or one-sided propaganda. We already have enough of those kinds of shows – damn near all of the Sunday morning political shows, all the shows on FOX NEWS, Morning JOKE, and some MSNBC afternoon and evening shows. With all of those GOP oriented shows, MHP show is seen as redundant and viewers are tuning out.
But look what happened to Rand Paul. Rachel Maddow did question Rand Paul and push back and he he got trashed by all and sundry thereafter. He then avoided any media but Fox and friendly local media.
Same with Pat Buchanan and after a while he stopped coming on at all.
That is my problem with her show as well. Do we really need to provide Republicans with ANOTHER platform from which to spout their lies and misinformation?
Even when Chris Hayes has Republican guests on, he always prefaces the discussion with a statement of the facts, and then he takes the conversation from there. Melissa fails to do this and it’s frustrating!

I haven’t seen the ratings. I stopped watching her show for the reasons you wrote. When I watched, she would just sit there and let outright lies get spewed without saying anything. The show IMO is dull.
I have the exact same complaints—-dull and is either not prepared or unwilling to push back on all the lies of her rt.wing/libertarian guests. We have no time for that now, this indulgence or whatever it is.

What I don’t want is a show that allows Republican lies to go unchecked. That’s all. These guests aren’t simply expressing opinions – they are actually spreading outright falsehoods. Why should that be acceptable? It’s hypocritical to call Mitt Romney a liar on one hand, while so many Republicans are all over the TV screen spreading similar lies and not called out on it.

This is great. Our history must be told. They need to know how hard it was to earn our freedom. It will be even harder to protect it.
I believe that Bobby Kennedy would have been elected president in 1968 and the whole trajectory of this country would have altered for the better. Instead we got Richard Nixon. After the assassinations of King and Kennedy, I actually felt as if I had been gutted and the good things had been erased from the world and replaced with the dark and ugly. Can’t look back on that era without shuddering.
I’m with you, Jackie. Although I always paid attention to presidential politics after that, it never really meant as much again until the Bill Clinton election (and even he later disappointed – SC – 2008 – still can’t get over that). President Obama helped to bring back many of the pieces of our hearts that we lost back in the ’60s, but it’s not something you can forget and I would never want to go through that again or have any of my grandchildren go through it.
I remember it all like it were yesterday.
JackieG and JO’B, it seems that the same kind of hatred and mean-spiritedness that was present back then in the 50′s and 60′s is coming back up to the surface now. I don’t want to be a “Debbie Downer” but I sincerely hope that we can learn from our mistakes of the past.
As I’ve been reading up on Robert Kennedy and the subsequent election of Richard Nixon after Bobby was killed, it is plain to see how Nixon’s hateful “Southern Strategy” led to the hatred we are seeing now. That hatred and meanness just went “underground” for the next 25- 30 years. That hatred was ‘mainstreamed’ into policies and procedures – unspoken, but hateful, nonetheless. Recently, the “Tea Party” allowed it to bubble back up to the surface, like a nasty boil.
I hope that we can finally lance it and drain all the nastiness out and allow our nation to heal. I hope and pray that we can make it thru this summer. I hope and pray that cooler heads will prevail. There is some really nasty stuff going on right now.
The ‘media’ isn’t really covering the simmering unrest, the desperation of people being cut-off from medicaid, running out of unemployment, dropped from cash assistance rolls with no jobs in sight. The media only wants to perpetuate hate and lies for Rethuglicans spouting non-sense.
I want us to learn from our mistakes. Make this a more perfect union. WE HAVE SO MUCH MORE WORK TO DO!!!

I did not mean to bring sad news on such a glorious day, but it just keeps me aware and focused of the fact that so many people are still struggling and pressing on despite their temporary circumstances. We must not get weary or discourage during this election because there are so many people who need this presidency a lot more than we realize. And most of all, a lot more than they realize.

The campaign to take down Bob Kerrey isn’t letting up.
The national conservative group Americans for Prosperity, which has spent several hundred thousand dollars pummeling the former senator on the air over the last few weeks, is up with a new spot this weekend. The commercial, produced by the GOP admakers at the Strategy Group for Media, is a twist on Kerrey’s own advertising — which features ordinary Nebraskans welcoming the Democrat back to his home state.
Except the Nebraskans in AFP’s ad have a different message: “Not in our home”; “not here”; “not in my house.” The narrator reminds viewers: “After living in New York City over a decade, Kerrey supports government-run health care, refusing to repeal Obama’s mandate. And he endorses the job-killing cap-and-trade plan.”
Kerrey is almost certainly the best recruit Democrats could have fielded for Nebraska’s open Senate seat. But his viability over the long term may hinge on how he’s defined at the start of the race: as a centrist, 1990s-vintage Democrat and Vietnam war hero, or as a carpetbagger with a worldview right out of Greenwich Village. AFP has been at the forefront of pushing the second narrative.
