Posting this again here. Please pass.

    http://www.balloon-juice.com/2012/04/15/the-real-war-on-moms-has-a-mortality-rate/

The U.S. Maternal Mortality Ratio (the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births) is shockingly high, well above the average for the developed world, and higher than virtually all of Western Europe as well as some countries in Asia and the Middle East. Even more troubling, U.S. maternal mortality has increased in the last two decades, and is now more than twice as high as it was in the late 1980s. The Affordable Care Act included provisions designed to help stop this scary trend—not just by expanding health care access (many maternal deaths could be prevented with proper care)—but also through the Maternal, Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting program, created as part of ACA, which provides nurses and social workers to work with high-risk moms, starting before they give birth, to help them have healthy pregnancies and deliveries and support their babies’ health and development after birth. The program is modeled after programs, such as the Nurse Family Partnership that have a strong track record of improving maternal and child outcomes, preventing abuse and neglect, increasing fathers’ involvement in their kids’ lives, improving kids’ school performance, reducing crime, and saving the taxpayers a boatload of money over the long term. But all that could go the way of the dodo, if ACA is struck down or repealed (and some of the right wing fear-mongering about this program must be seen to be believed).

Happy yo be the one t report that to you, jojo, look at me, I am HOME three hours early today, am outside with kitty, making a video f the garden and the trees in bloom! Lovely! So lovely… Kitty is eating grass and enjoying her outing ( she can only be out on a leash with me holding the other end) no worries here! ;)

It’s a lovely sunny day here in SoCal and my kittie was outside today too. I live in a townhouse style condo so I leave the door a jar so she can come in and out and if she doesn’t check in, I’ll go out to ’round her up to come back home. She’s good about not going too far but I do need to check on her so she won’t get stuck in someone’s garage or wonder too far. I know how the PNW folks love being outside especially on a beautiful day.

US trade deficit fell in February to $46 billion

The U.S. trade deficit fell in February to its lowest point in four months. American exports rose to an all-time high while imports dropped.

The narrower deficit could lead economists to upward revise their growth estimates for the January-March quarter…..

THIS GIVES ME AN IDEA FOR A CALL TO ACTION

Tweet and email the “Things I Want To Bitch About” post (or your own version of the post) along with the principles of journalism to cable/network stations, newspapers, reporters, bloggers in your area (and beyond). Bottom line, all we are asking is that the basic principles of journalism be followed when educating and informing the public. The first principle of journalism is TO TELL THE TRUTH. We need for the media to stop worrying about facts having a liberal bias. Stop carrying water for the GOP. Stop being led around by the nose by the GOP with phony manufactured controversies. Stop with the false equivalence between the parties. Stop trying to set the narrative. Stop being obsessed with only reporting the negative angle of every story. JUST DO YOUR JOB. Tell the truth and let the chips fall where they may.

I agree Ladyhawke. Griping about it in our comments doesn’t feel good and doesn’t help find a solution. I make comments after articles on onlne media sites. I “like” good comments. I retweet good tweets. Sometimes I try to email commentators, but that can be frustrating and I don’t feel my voice is heard. I’m making the effort to learn Twitter (slooowly :) and it seems like Twitter is very effective. I just have to learn how to iniate tweets myself and how to make effective tweets. I appreciate your comment very much!

        April 15, 2012 at 4:39 pm

I keep wondering how much better informed the American people would be if this simple principle was followed.

        1. Journalism’s first obligation is to the truth

Democracy depends on citizens having reliable, accurate facts put in a meaningful context. Journalism does not pursue truth in an absolute or philosophical sense, but it can–and must–pursue it in a practical sense. This “journalistic truth” is a process that begins with the professional discipline of assembling and verifying facts. Then journalists try to convey a fair and reliable account of their meaning, valid for now, subject to further investigation. Journalists should be as transparent as possible about sources and methods so audiences can make their own assessment of the information. Even in a world of expanding voices, accuracy is the foundation upon which everything else is built–context, interpretation, comment, criticism, analysis and debate. The truth, over time, emerges from this forum. As citizens encounter an ever greater flow of data, they have more need–not less–for identifiable sources dedicated to verifying that information and putting it in context.

yes! the politcal carnival that DF was talking about in the last post: “Things I want to Bitch About” Anyways she’s including the hash tag: #BitchorBurst . so you are saying a tweet like:

          @MSM news agency : hey guys way to let {insert name here} get away with espousing gop talking points and not pushing back against them #BitchorBurst {and any other thing provided you have space}

          kind of the gist, right?

          • 30 Ladyhawke
            April 15, 2012 at 5:26 pm

Exactly, that’s the idea. All we are asking is that the basic tenants of good journalism be adhered to. We can not allow the media to abdicate their responsibility to educate and inform the public with the facts. So every tweet and/or email calling out lazy reporting (whether it’s cable, network, or reporter) should embarrass them and let them know we are on to them.

I keep thinking about the post from Paul Krugman earlier this week about Mitt Romney entitled “The Mendacity Is The Message”. In the last paragraph, he made the point that Mitt Romney HAS CONTEMPT FOR THE NEWS MEDIA (AND THE VOTERS). How pathetic is that?

            The Mendacity Is The Message

            —————————————–

The core of Romney’s campaign strategy seems to be contempt for the news media (and the voters), the belief that he can say anything and pay no price — which was the way things worked for Bush. But maybe, just maybe, his calculation was wrong, and serial dishonesty will become, justifiably, part of the narrative.

            ——————————————-

Shout out to hopefruit–great statment, and important, “no reason for false equivalency when you have the truth on your side”. Thanks for that. Saw that idiot Bauchman this am. Gregory just let her yap, lie, and be rude. She was talking about $2 gas that the Repubs would provide if elected, no truth to that, and was on the lie about President Obama hurting women because it’s his fault that so many women lost their jobs. When is Bauchman up for reelection? God, she has to be removed from office. I don’t know anything about her state, but hope someone strong will run against her.

And don’t get me started on the MTP segment with Gregory, Bachmann and Gillibrand. I’m not sure why Gillibrand was there because she basically allowed Gregory and Bachmann to dominate the segment with Republican lies while she gave half-assed and scattered responses. She sounded more like a member of a high school debate team than a US senator. What a waste of time!

I just tweeted and asked Ann Romney what makes a candidate ‘pro-family’ that would repeal ACA and approve of women dying needlessly of cancer because they can’t afford insurance, leaving their children without a mother.

This would break their hearts if they had hearts. The American Family Wrecking Crew is more like it.

CNN sent a request for a response, but the response they received didn’t answer the question about what Romney meant about “dignity” . Also, Lemon noted that Romney said the mothers needed to go out and work, not that they were already working and needed to go out and get MORE work! The Rep was having a hard time spinning that!

But although they will not know, they will benefit because what was accomplished there and with all the advance work, will definitely impact the economy in a positive way. Why President Obama has a hard time making his case with the public–they just don’t know. But if the economy advances, he will get credit by the majority.

  44. 137 Linda
    April 15, 2012 at 6:25 pm

At first, it appeared that GOP candidates keep talking radical smack to appease the 5-percenters on the outer right edge, who dominate the GOP primaries. However, looking at their legislative action over the past 4 years, one fact becomes evident: The Republican war on women is a concerted effort to re-engineer this country, and keep people in general, and women in particular, in permanent serfdom.

There is the redefinition of rape, the effort to make contraception unaffordable, the redefinition of life itself (according to right wingers beginning before contraception now!), and there is the relentless axing of aid for pregnant women and single mothers at the same time. On top, they drain funds for education on state and federal level.

Romney and the GOP essentially say: withhold contraception to increase pregnancies. Then force the women to have the children under all conditions, by making abortions only legal to those who can afford a trip to Canada or Europe. Then withhold financial aid and basic health care from women with children, and force them to work, while their kids grow up on the streets or in front of a X-Box, with now education, no hope, and no dignity. Why would Republocans do such a thing? It is an almost devilish plot.

It is what Obama says: social Darwinism. People who are so desperate that they can not readily provide for their children any more are easy prey for exploitation. The plot is to compete with China in their own domain, which is cheap labor (and to make a lot of money on the side for the Romney’s offshore bank accounts and trust funds). Looking at all the facts, it cannot be denied any more, that the GOP wants to turn the middle class into permanent serfs for their new neo-feudalist society, where not the fittest but the richest survive.

    • 140 theo67
      April 15, 2012 at 6:40 pm

I kept watching the CBS feed after the press conference, and one of the WHPC reporters was priming her live feed, talking about the Secret Service and “continuing fallout”, and then as a side note, mentioned that there happened to be some policy news which was worth at least one line, and then quickly went back to “the President had hoped to focus on his domestic policy when he got back to the States, but will have to focus on the Secret Service investigation instead”. I wanted to put my hand through my laptop and slap her. Does she really think the President is not going to do his actual job because the media and Darrell Issa are fascinated with a scandal that happened two weeks ago? If that’s the case, then maybe that would explain the GOP not having done a stitch of work to recover the economy, since they’ve been plagued with sex scandals like Vitter, et al.

It’s quite embarrassing. The President had some significant achievements to report that will actually benefit the American people. And they lead with a scandal that means nothing to anybody except those protected by the Secret Service, give 5 seconds cover to the actual accomplishments, and then ignore the facts of this visit – namely that the President is a rock star.

The White House has the video of yesterday’s press conference with Carney and Rhodes. Approximately twenty-five questions. One each on China, North Korea, monetary policy, defense policies and the Columbia fee trade agreement. Two on Argentina. Four on Iraq including one as it relates to Israel. Four on drugs. Nine on the SS affair, and one more Carney said should be for the State Department. And Jay made it clear that only the fact that the President has been informed would be given by him and for anything further, they should contact SS.

Yes, whenever I think of eating roadkill, I always think of Willard. And then I abstain. :)

Willard is giving us as many memorable phrases as the half term governor.

It can’t happen quickly enough that he goes the way she did – outta here! And it’ll be even better when he’s not on the scene, because the only person who’d be worse as a commentator on FOX than Sarah is Willard, and surely even those creeps know it.

Ut- Girl, you are too funny…but ‘straight in your face can’t run from truth’ stuff. I really look forward to your comments every day.
And, additionally, the fact of the matter is that the shameless press will never satisfy, therefore people, it’s time to take over that portfolio and relieve them of their trite, inane, banter, which no-one seems to care about. Yes, You, the twitteratis, take over the narrative, and keep calling them out each and every single day!! Keep on keeping on.
