rise and shine

Washington Post: President Obama raised $53 million last month for his reelection, a substantial increase from the month before.

In February, Obama raised $45 million from 348,000 donors. This month he upped his total by $8 million, and increased his donor pool to 567,000.

…. Ninety-seven percent of donations to Obama’s re-election effort were for $250 or less, the Obama campaign said. The average contribution was $50.78.

As of mid-March the president’s campaign had close to $85 million in cash on hand, according to FEC filings.

Buzzfeed: Former Governor Mitt Romney is already offering top donors access to a special “Presidential Inaugural retreat,” planned on the assumption that he will be elected president this November.

The offer, in a fundraising email circulated by a top Georgia supporter to fellow Republicans and obtained by BuzzFeed, is one of several goodies offered to those who contribute more than $50,000 to the joint fundraising committee known as “Romney Victory”….

Those donors will be named “Founding Members” of Romney Victory and invited to a California retreat with Romney and offered “yet to be determined access at the Republican National Convention in Tampa in August.”

They will also “have preferred status at the first Presidential Inaugural retreat,” the email says.

(VIDEO) MITT’S MUDDLED MESSAGE ON MOMS

    By Steve Benen

    ———————————————————

So, if you’re Ann Romney, being a stay-at-home mom counts as “work.” If you’re a low-income mother struggling to get by, being a stay-at-home mom is undignified and doesn’t count as “work.”
    .
    .
Here are a few questions for the political world to ponder: why should Hilary Rosen’s observation generate a national controversy, while Romney’s policy positions go overlooked? Or put another way, which of the two statements is more insulting to moms? Which of the two is more condescending?

Why does Romney believe moms with private-equity riches are dignified and should have a choice about working outside the home, while moms who need public assistance lack dignity and should have no choice?

Or more to the point, why will Romney and Republicans continue to say “all moms are working moms” without the fear that voters will laugh in their face?

Good point, I didn’t see the entire interview. I agree Senator Gillibrand should not have allowed Michele Bachmann to highjack the interview. But unfortunately, David Gregory is totally useless as a host. It was really troubling to see Michele Bachman listed as a guest. Could it be that Senators Snowe, Murkowski and Bailey-Hutchison were not available? Oh, silly me, they have criticized the GOP about their problems with women voters recently. Never mind.

Dem’s should be better prepared, especially with a known shill like David Gregory as host. We get precious little time on the Sunday morning shows and there is no excuse to blow an opportunity like this. Republicans down to precinct captains are better prepared for their turn at the mic than Democratic Senators unless they are just personally better at it. The DNC is not doing its job preparing our spokes people to do proper battle.

I understand how primaries work but the biggest mistake this man made was his hard right turn to pander to the R-base that never bought his pander in the first place. I have to confess that last fall I was a little afraid of Romney as a candidate because the moderates and independents I was talking to back then really liked him. They thought he was not as polarizing as the others and saw him as a successful businessman who might have been able to turn things around economically.

The path this core-less nutjob decided to take backfired so hard on him. Instead of showing some independent creds he was worse than Santorum and Gingrich put together. Now that the economy is improving he’s got nothing to stand on because he has alienated the moderates and indies. They can’t stand him.

Whoever was advising this guy gets a gold star from me. I couldn’t be happier. Those folks who were considering him last Fall now won’t give him a second thought.

The Republican Hill can line up behind him all they want but it won’t be enough!

        April 16, 2012 at 12:17 pm

The other thing to note is that Mitt’s business acumen should be questioned. He didn’t actually found Bain Capital – it was handed to him by Bain because Bain admired his father. He had to be convinced by Bain to take the job, because Mitt was afraid of failure – or rather, of everyone knowing that he failed. He had to have assurances from Bain that no-one would ever know he had failed, and that his old job would be there waiting for him, with a ready lie that Bain needed him back at Bain Consulting – not that he had failed out of the position. That kind of fear of risk is not a trait you find in a founder of a company, or of a knowledgeable business person.

In addition, take a look at his time with Staples, which is always being touted as one of his successes”. He initially rejected Staples as a business venture. It took the Staples entrepreneur running additional analyses and garnering other investors, before Mitt signed on. Plus, Mitt wasn’t involved in the operation of the company. He was a non-operating Director. He left before any of the real Staples successes took place. So, he really can’t be credited with any of that.

The fact is, his reticence to take risks, his anal and endless analysis, and his cowardice at not wanting to be seen as a failure – that points to someone who really should never have succeeded in the natural world of big business. He was coddled and pushed along, but these accounts. And he doesn’t know the first thing about foreign policy – which is even scarier in this dangerous times.

I got a lot of this from the Vanity Fair article (plus others) that was posted a while back. http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/2012/02/mitt-romney-201202

Good Morning TODers! I don’t mean to be Debbie Downer, But…

Anybody know anything about this group? Other than the fact that they want to organize a national rally in — what — a month? Really? It takes much longer to put an effective national rally together. Oh by the way, what is the political objective of such a national demonstration? The About Us page provides a some reasoning, but does not tell me who is organizing this. There are two names on the press releases; that’s it. Until I know who the organizers are and the source of their funding, I am not on board. This could be the Koch brothers or the grifters who organized the Tea Party rallies for all I know. These folk want to collect your story, but can’t tell their own? However, they seem to have a full product line — $25 T-shirts and even dog accessories — ready to go.

For a national rally I want to see local and national individuals/organizations with a track record on women’s rights leading the charge. Gotta go to work now!

  20. April 16, 2012 at 9:00 am

    Good Morning, Everyone.

As we begin this week, I think we already know what will be happening.

The MSM, as usual, will be trying to find anything to attach negatively to this President.

    Follow the clues, folks.

We had, last week, a variety of polls, all of which had the President leading Willard by far outside the margin of error.

Last month, we had the FOX NEWS poll telling us that the President’s lead with Latinos was 70 – 14%.

The latest Rasmussen poll had POTUS at 50%. Always with Ras, if the best they could do with the President was 50%, that means to me that the President is actually at 55-57%.

Then, the latest poll of the Purple Swing States, where not only is the President leading Willard outside of the Margin of Error, but that the internals show the President with an 18% lead among women, while he is even with men.

That gap with women has been confirmed by other polls.

Then, WAPO tried some bullshyt about The President winning SINGLE women, but trailing badly among married, while PEW threw shade on that bullshyt showing POTUS trailing married women by 2 points. IN WHAT WORLD is 2 points ‘ trailing badly’. 2 points is the MARGIN OF ERROR, which means he’s even with Willard.

    This is all about MONEY.

    CITIZENS UNITED MONEY.

IF the President is within the margin of error with men

    AND leading women by 18%.

I don’t give a rat’s ass how many voter suppression laws they pass..

    there IS no horserace.

and, IF therei s no horserace,

then they can’t get their hands on that Citizens United money.

Just wanted to remind folks of that this morning.

Pennsylvania’s Voter ID Law Adds The Amish To The Long List Of Voters Harmed By Voter ID

      ———————————–

While many Amish and Mennonite people do not vote, those who do vote tend to vote for Republicans. But Republicans have led the charge across the U.S. to enact voter ID laws in an effort to disenfranchise groups of voters like groups, such as college students, low-income voters, and minorities. PennDOT reports that it has issued about 4,000 nonphoto IDs to Amish people, but there are about 61,000 Amish who live in the state. And it is doubtful more Amish will want to go through the arduous process to get a nonphoto ID simply to vote.

Ironically, this new hurdle to Amish voters was erected while many Republicans also insist that the Obama Administration is attacking religious freedom through new federal regulations that require employer-provided health insurance plans to cover contraception. It’s difficult to square the GOP’s claims about religious liberty with the impact of voter ID on specific faiths. Pennsylvania’s voter ID law requires certain people of faith to take additional steps simply to exercise their constitutional right to vote.

    Yay, GOBAMA.

President Obama raised $53 million last month for his reelection, a substantial increase from the month before.

I am always amazed at how some writers twist themselves into pretzels to come up with something—anything!—-in order to throw some cold water on Obama’s recent optimistic re-election poll numbers and prospects. Earlier on Tampa Bay Times website—gone now—-there was a top story on Obama’s problem with white working-class voters—-that again! Usually this is a semi-friendly news site—-but maybe they were forced to come up with some negative something because of the Repub convention there. But I have never seen a group so heavily mused about as working class whites—–even mentioned Tweety’s favorites—–those in western Pa., as if the whole election teetered on this geographic area and these people. And the article used a couple of ridiculous quotes—-from a salesman at Sears and a nurse’s aid—-saying they voted for hope and change and they’re still not rich. Laughable. And the nurse’s aid said she was really annoyed about the “Obama’s splashy Hawaiian vacations” and “Michelle’s coutoure dresses” ——-ridiculous—-and so she’s going to vote for Romney??? And then—–most unbelievable—–after we get 2/3 down into this “big problem” for the Obama campaign, the writer happens to mention that Romney’s favorable polls have dropped from 49% to 29% with this same demographic. So——what was the point again? Sheer desperation on media’s part again to find something negative to say about President Obama, no matter how pointless and stupid.

    • 93 hopefruit2
      April 16, 2012 at 9:37 am

      ROTFLMAO!!!

The sheer ludicrous nature of these “examples” clearly suggest they are PLANTS. These media editorials are making up stories. Period.

And like you dotster I’m just as amused by how the said “nurse” can be annoyed at “obama’s splashy Hawaiian vacations” and “Michelle’s courtoure dresses” yet be oh-so golly just fine n dandy with Willard’s car elevators, several mansions and offshore accounts! HAHA!

If you notice the number of online comments on YouTube and everywhere that appear to be in favor of Ron Paul just don’t translate into actual votes? That tells me that it’s the media outlets themselves creating these fake GOP supporters. Or they’ve hired a few people just to go all over the internet impersonating actual supporters. These are not real people.

    • April 16, 2012 at 9:42 am

The more I see of her, the more she reveals herself to be as nasty and fake as her lying, heartless husband. That appearance at the NRA might have finished her off for me—-in her sheer dress which was so tight across the boobs that it looked like it hurt—–pandering to the gun nuts whose lobbying efforts are responsible for a huge increase in shooting deaths, causing heartbreak and destroying families across the U.S.

Nope. And it cracks me up when she presents herself as a “mom.” Her kids are grown. She’s a grandmother. Accept it and age with grace. There’s nothing more pathetic than an older woman trying to act young and sexy. Mature and attractive, yes. But mutton dressed as lamb is just sad.

Your comment made me LOL…I haven’t heard that phrase…”mutton dressed as lamb” in ages. I was at a local community center yesterday & some of us elder grannies were discussing the… if we had the money, would we get work done on our faces or bodies? issue. The consensus was a resounding “NO” We all liked ourselves just the way we are & we enjoy being elders & grannies. The only thing we all wished we had was the energy of a younger person!

    In my sweet dreams!

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheats/2012/04/16/obama-tentatively-woos-arizona.html

Could Arizona, with its staunchly conservative governor and senators, go blue in the presidential election? President Obama’s campaign thinks it might and is sending workers to campuses and Latino neighborhoods this spring. Analysts show that Arizona is becoming less conservative in national elections, though it might not be ready to vote Democratic. It would be a big change: Arizona has voted for only one Democratic president since Truman.

I’m gonna work on it! I wish that I could speak Spanish :)

    • April 16, 2012 at 9:47 am

      df, I’m in California and so far (because this is such a blue state) we are assigned to Nevada but sometimes I wish we could be helping out in AZ. I would love nothing more than to see you and your citizens given some relief. {{{{hugs}}}}

      • April 16, 2012 at 9:54 am

They have increased the OFA people here to target the Hispanic Communities and the Reservations. I think if the President wasn’t black we would get all those who hate Romney, but the Republicans I know, though they do not admit it, will not vote for him for that reason. The Democratic Party has greatly improved since last election so I am hopeful.

        • April 16, 2012 at 9:59 am

OFA has definitely improved on their structure since 2008. HQ really has a phenomenal team. Our state directors are great and some of our strongest regional people are being pulled to other states at this point. The data gathering/analysis is precise and relentless. The outcomes are impressive. I wonder which state has been assigned to you? Glad to hear that there are more boots on the ground. This will gradually accelerate and you will see a HUGE effort unfold.

ALSO, judging from the events I’ve seen, I think PBO has pretty much sewn up the Native American vote. He’s met all his promises to them so far and made history bringing them into the process.

            April 16, 2012 at 2:09 pm

The problem here is the way polling places have been set up on the Rez. Some people had to make over 100 mile round trip to vote in 2010. This meant using scarce resources for gas & taking kiddos out of school for the day. Also, when church groups set up water & food for the families outside the polling places, Dems got accused by the GOP of “buying votes” Another problem is that many there can’t do mail in balloting because they don’t have a “proper address” which is more voter suppression. The GOP don’t want native peoples voting because they know the voters will go for PBO & Dems.

In 2008, I remember there was some talk about trying to make a game of it in AZ, but because of McCain’s status there decided not to. It wouldn’t surprise me to see them make a pitch. McCain himself has been pretty outspoken in his disgust of the Republican primaries and his concern about the results of Citizens United and the impact of the Super PACs. Wonder if they may not use McCain in some of PBOs ads out there.

I spoke with someone at OFA in Chicago some months back, and she told me that the internals for AZ actually look better than NV did, at that time. It was that whole “favorite son” thing for McCain in 2008. Even some Dems here had respect for McCain until he screwed the pooch by turning severe Right & selecting the dizzy biscuit Palin for VP. McCain has lost a lot of support & credibility here even among the Repubs. We have a big Mormon population & most will go Robme but some will never vote for him like a Mormon neighbor of mine who is uncertain if he will “sit this one out or vote for Obama.” I’m working on him, gently.

There was a paper referenced in the orange place and this is fascinating. Abstract – Seven studies using experimental and naturalistic methods reveal that upper-class individuals behave more unethically than lower-class individuals. In studies 1 and 2, upper-class individuals were more likely to break the law while driving, relative to lower-class individuals. In follow-up laboratory studies, upper-class individuals were more likely to exhibit unethical decision-making tendencies (study 3), take valued goods from others (study 4), lie in a negotiation (study 5), cheat to increase their chances of winning a prize (study 6), and endorse unethical behavior at work (study 7) than were lower-class individuals. Mediator and moderator data demonstrated that upper-class individuals’ unethical tendencies are accounted for, in part, by their more favorable attitudes toward greed.

It’s probably Word Press which has been acting like a cranky baby for weeks. Try going directly to his blog rather than through email notice. I have him book marked & check frequently to see if he has a new post up so I have had no problems. He has two great humor diaries up since Saturday. He has told us that he won’t be able to blog or comment when his job gets busy this summer so I want to get as much of his goodness as possible before he takes his hiatus. Good luck!

Hi Aquagranny, I am also sure it is WordPress as I am getting his messages OK. I tried going through the link here and that doesn’t work. Can you please e-mail him on his contact link or put on a comment and tell him I can’t get through and see if he can fix something. I hate to have to drop him as I enjoy his writing so much. Thanks!

Already done Kiddo. I dropped him a comment as soon as I read your post here. If you are having problems others probably are too. Did you try just going directly to your browser & typing in his blog address? Remember that WP rules TOD blog just like they do his & maybe they have blocked the access here for some reason. I’ll come right back with the link I use to his blog. Hang on a sec, okay?

You are so good to try, but, no, still doesn’t work. He can send to me but I am somehow blocked from getting to him any which way. I will wait for Norbrook to solve it. Thank you!

Norbrook thinks it is some problem on your end because no one else seems to have this problem. I tested both my link above and the one here at TOD & got there both times. You could try logging out & rebooting then see if your links will work. Sorry, I can’t be more help but I am glad to be the relay here.

Thanks, Aquagranny. The only thing that I have changed is using Adobe Flash instead of Google Chrome Flash, and that change has made using TOD OK now. I can’t imagine anything being that much different between TOD and another WordPress account. Can you ask him to e-mail me at reojan at gmail.com please. It is driving me crazy. I haven’t been able to access the last two.

An article of some interest concerning rising healthcare costs. The rate on increase ahs been slowing down greatly. Just another side effect of ACA, I am suere, and one that won’t be noticed by the public.

I see Hillary Clinton’s pics are circulating. I’m glad everybody had so much fun in Colombia clubbing and partying (except for Barack).

Why was she out partying? Becoming of a SOS? I think all this attention being paid to Hillary is just part of her folks’ campaign to push her for 2016. Makes my blood boil because we have an election to win in 2012 and they are showing disrespect for the President. This is not helpful. And I think Hillary should have the decency to ask her supporters to just stop already and at least wait until after we win in November. Sorry for the rant, but I do not like it at all.

      • April 16, 2012 at 1:25 pm

She probably was out partying because her boss gave her the night off. Big deal someone took a picture of her getting her groove on. Has nothing to do with 2012.

Comedian Aziz Ansari (Parks and Rec) was on The View and showed a clip of President Obama giving him a shout out at a fundraiser and teasing him about having more twitter followers. Aziz is cute and funny and is getting a lot of mileage out of that Obama appearance, telling hilarious stories about it on Jimmy Fallon also.

Philippe Villers was a little boy in 1940, when his family escaped from Paris only hours before the Nazi invasion and immigrated to the United States. From the harrowing flight of a wartime refugee, Villers went on to earn degrees from Harvard and MIT and to cofound Computervision, a former Fortune 500 company that made him rich.

“This country has been good to me,’’ Villers, 76, said. “I’d like to do my part to give back.’’

As part of his effort to give back, Villers has made an unusual request to the federal government: Raise my taxes, please.

Villers is one of a handful of Massachusetts members of a national organization called Patriotic Millionaires for Fiscal Strength, which supports a 30 percent effective tax rate on million-dollar annual earners under the “Buffett Rule.’’ The Senate will hold a procedural vote on the proposal Monday.

The US tax code’s top income tax rate is 35 percent but imposes only a 15 percent levy on capital gains on investments, where many affluent Americans earn much of their money. Billionaire Warren Buffett, for whom the rule is named, has complained publicly that he pays an effective tax rate of just 17.4 percent, while his secretary pays 35.8 percent.

TIME’S UP: The EPA is proposing a federal plan to cut air pollution that reduces visibility in national parks (“haze”) in Montana, after the state declined to submit its own regional haze plan in 2006. At the same time the agency is approving a change to the state’s visibility plan, saying the two plans combined will meet the requirements of the Clean Air Act. The approval: http://bit.ly/JnXXtL.

Have you all read this article? By Reuters.. it is imo a total trashing of POTUS’ efforts at the Summit of the Americas. Is this just BS or is it true? I want to send it to the ofa fact check link, but can’t remember what its called.
    Heres the article: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/16/us-americas-summit-obama-idUSBRE83F0UD20120416

Its basically saying that the majority of LA leaders trashed POTUS over Cuba.

I found it- Attack Watch, have emailed them a link to this crappy story.

    • April 16, 2012 at 1:12 pm

Well, it is true that virtually all of the leaders at the summit disagree with the US and Canada about the relationship with Cuba. I don’t know if they trashed PBO, but they were vocal with their disagreement. I will add that I disagree with the US polict toward Cuba, as well, and am hoping that in his second term, PBO will work to get it changed.

thanks for your reply japa. The entire tone of the article suggests imo that the trip/summit was basically a failure.. when in fact I don’t believe the entire summit was about Cuba.

    Hi TOD’rs,
Dotster wrote something upthread that had me thinking.
She spoke about a Tampa newspaper spewing about POTUSs difficulty with white, middle class voters. That article even mentioned Tweety and his pre-occupation with “western Pennsylvania” voters.
You should all know that the Pittsburgh is one the most NON DIVERSE areas of the country.
It is more “white” than Lancaster County (think Amish country) or even Salt Lake City (think Mormon country).
Pittsburgh is a great town (born and raised), with that unfortunate distinction.
    Just thought you should know.

WASHINGTON — Jim Yong Kim, an American who is president of Dartmouth College, has been chosen to be the next president of the World Bank. His selection Monday extends the U.S. hold on the top job at the 187-nation development agency.

Kim, a surprise nominee of President Barack Obama, was selected in a vote by the World Bank’s 25-member executive board. He’ll succeed Robert Zoellick, who’s stepping down after a five year term.
