The last photo with the wounded warrior gives me inspiration. There are always those who have more battles to fight than yourself. I am currently fighting to get back to walking after a total knee replacement. Made some steps without a walker or cane yesterday. Those brave young individuals are role models for all of us.

Hi Obama Grandmama. So good to see that you are up and moving about after your surgery. You are still in my prayer time. I had a similar emotional reaction to that last photo as well. I stopped and cried(yes, I cry a lot) because I thought of all of the days that gentleman gave his all for all of us and still had the courage, strength and love to move through his personal inguries with so much to bear in the process.

What a thought for all of us to keep in our hearts as we travel through out pains and inguries daily. He gave me courage to see him walk through those doors of the WH with so much hope within his body for the world to see. I take courage from that photo today just as you are taking steps of courage to be able to walk again with ease and comfort.((((((((((( Healing Power be Granted to you, Obama Grandmama))))))))HZ

Good wishes for your knee rehab! My neighbor just had one nee done about 2 months ago and she’s doing good now. She walked with 2 poles at first, and walks without anything now. Try to do your exercises to help your knee. I’ll hit 60 this year and both knees feel shot!
After I posted about being sad, it was one of those posts I wanted to take back because It wasn’t in keeping with a positive attitude, which these brave people need in order to keep themselves & others going.

Currently working in watercolors and pen and ink I call myself an artist as I do sell my work. I am more a hobbiest though as I went this direction after retiring from teaching. I am more like a beginner as compared to this artist. I painted a portrait of Obama for his 2008 election and used it to make postcards while participating in the Postcards for America campaign. At that time I had a problem getting permission to use a photo to paint from. AP photos and others I tried would not give permission. I had to watch a recorded debate and sketch from what I saw. I also could not sell my work. I did donate the original to the Chicago Hdqtrs and sent a postcard to Sasha and Malia through Michelle. Farley was sued by AP for using a four year old photo to make his famous HOPE design. I hoped he would win his case as it is hard for those without influence to take a photo on their own to use, but he lost. I noticed Corbis photos were used so I will see what their permission looks like.

Chips, I’m so glad you posted the comparison charts of Obama’s individual donations relative to Romneys – thanks so much!!. I posted a comment on the last thread and I’m re-posting it here because it’s VERY relevant to this issue of fundraising:

// I saw that the NYTimes has another false headline today “Obama Sees Steep Dropoff in Cash From Major Donors.” I didn’t even bother reading the article because I know it’s garbage. And I won’t link it here either. I know the article is BS. Just last year, the same NYTimes put out a hit piece on the President’s fundraising – that time claiming that Obama was in trouble with small individual donors. Now we know that was a ton of hogwash because a few weeks (or days) after article, the Obama camp released their numbers for that quarter, showing not just a a record-breaking haul for that quarter, but a huge increase in NEW small individual donors over and above their already impressive showing from the 2008 campaign.

The NYTimes to date has not posted ANYTHING negative about Romney’s fundraising -how weak he is in small donors relative to Obama; how the majority of his fundraising (more than 85%) comes from big corporations, rich individual donors. How he is mostly relying on SuperPacs to fuel his campaign based on lies, hate, bigotry, xenophobia, misogyny and duplicity. At a time when the country is still suffering the effects of the greed and abuses of the Bush administration, Republicans in congress, and large corporations and Wall Street, you would think that a presidential candidate relying primarily on those entities to fund his/her campaign would be a huge liability – something to be criticized and condemned, not something to be ignored or praised. Wasn’t that what OWS supposedly about in the first place? So why the utter and noticeable silence coming from the media on Romney’s failure to attract ordinary small donors? And conversely why does the media consider it a “problem” for Obama because much of his fundraising is now coming from small donors – when just a year ago, they were busy braying that his inability to attract small donors would be his “problem?” //

    • April 21, 2012 at 8:36 am

What they don’t get is the difference between Obama and Romney. Romney desperately needs major donors because few of the “little people” will give anything to him, and he’s not rich enough to self-fund. Obama likes major donors, but he can get nearly a billion from just us regular folks,

      • 39 hopefruit2
        April 21, 2012 at 8:59 am

That’s exactly my point in this comment. The NYTimes is essentially spinning something that is wholesome and positive as a negative, just to take a disgustingly cheap shot at the President.

        • 40 utaustinliberal
          April 21, 2012 at 9:09 am

Last year the NYTimes was whining about President Obama having a problem with small donors, then they whined that he had a problem with large donors, then he had a problem with bundlers. The numbers came out and proved them woefully wrong. So I see they are back to playing groundhog day.

HF, I saw that NYT headline on an RSS feed and was annoyed, but didn’t click on it. As I thought about it, it seemed a good thing that the grassroots was delivering for the president. Who wants someone who’s beholden to a few rich guys. Our president is supported by real people like us–people who think and act, have feelings and, VOTE. And we are the people he cares about. So.. within five minutes, I donated twice to the Obama campaign. Way to go, NYT. Wonder how much of a haul the article brings in, especially among New Yorkers.

If they get caught on one lie or a b.s charge, they just move on the next attack line. They’re also skilled at making Obama pay for what others in his party say (Ms. Rosen). The press needs to ask Romney directly whether he intends, as president, to chain himself to a desk, never get fresh air and cut out all exercise from his regime.. Really, will he commit to a non-exercise presidency so that he becomes weak and flacid (no puns intended). Every healthy person in the world needs fresh air and exercise and especially so if you have a grinding, demanding job. Or, is that supposed be only white people who deserve exercise. Each day Romney gives me one more compelling reason to despise him.

Jovie – clearly the RNC and the Romney camp have never played the dozens. You can’t be coming at President Obama with the weak sauce comments like that.

Their understanding of “mind games and mocking” is not up to the standards of a Kindergarten not raised with a spoon in their mouth. PO is not paying them or their silly statements any attention. CFTC NABS OIL SPECULATOR

High-frequency trader Optiver pays $14 million in oil manipulation case

    —————————–

NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. regulators claimed their first victory in a four-year old effort to crack down on oil market manipulation on Thursday, announcing a $14 million settlement with high-frequency trading firm Optiver.

In a ruling that came just two days after U.S. President Barack Obama proposed a renewed campaign against illegal oil trading schemes, the Amsterdam-based company agreed to disgorge $1 million in profits and pay a $13 million civil penalty over allegations it used a rapid-fire tool nicknamed “The Hammer” to influence U.S. oil prices in 2007.

It was the first case brought by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) in its 2008 effort to curb market malfeasance, launched as prices soared toward a record near $150 a barrel in the middle of that year.

The case alleged that traders in Optiver’s Chicago office reaped a $1 million profit by engaging in a practice called “banging the close”, in which the firm attempted to move U.S. oil prices by executing a large volume of deals during the final moments of trading.

rachel is dedicated to her preferred lying rant on LGBT issues and NO AMOUNT OF TRUTH is going to change that!!!!!

we all know rachel can do research and find facts on other subjects and present them.

but there is no satisfying her until President Obama deals with EVERYTHING that ails the LGBT community and individual members (up to and including any mis-understandings that occur between any two people in a relationship).

rachel has the blinders on on LGBT issues and there is no stopping her lies and feeling of slight – so I have given up on her EVER giving President Obama ANY CREDIT on the huge progress made since PBO was sworn in.

      • April 21, 2012 at 11:00 am

        April 21, 2012 at 11:43 am

Rachel has a blind spot in this area for sure. I didn’t watch her show last night after seeing people upset on twitter – not sure if she had anything to say about this Liberty University commencement speech, considering what they think and do to gay people. If she doesn’t want to be grateful for what President Obama has done to reverse the damage done to the LGBT community by President Clinton, and what he’s done to advance their cause and raise awareness, then she should at least acknowledge that the alternative to President Obama on gay issues will make all the things she accuses President Obama of doing/not doing a reality (and much worse) under a Romney presidency (heaven forbid).

        • 78 Betsy
          April 22, 2012 at 2:02 pm

Rachel has been great this past week, until Friday. Friday her show was a pissing match about everything she’s been mad about, from the lack of a parade in NYC for the Iraq Vets, to PBO for LGBT rights, etc. Haven’t yet read that she married Susan, now that she can in MA…so don’t know why she’s so mad?

          • 79 theo67
            April 22, 2012 at 2:15 pm

I just don’t like the inconsistency, the partial truth. They have a President who has worked diligently, in very difficult circumstances, to make things better for LGBT. The President has done more than a lot of the ones who appear on TV. And the actual community seems to appreciate those efforts. It’s the ones who make their money on TV who seem upset. That could be said about every “special interest group” – blacks have Cornel, Tavis, the wig lady; Hispanics have Gutierrez; LGBT have Rachel, Dan Choi; Women have the PUMAs who’re still bitter over Hillary. The actual people who have spent years fighting for their causes, putting in the blood, sweat and tears – they appreciate progress. They know that their causes have moved forward by leaps and bounds under this President, after so many years of stagnation. The ones who appear on TV for money are the “Professional Left” that Gibbs talked about, who earn their livings through perpetual disappointment, and will lose money if things are getting solved, because they think they won’t have things to complain about anymore.

      • 80 57andFemale
        April 21, 2012 at 1:06 pm

That’s when I lost respect for Rachel. We all have issues that are no. 1 for us but I won’t let my one issue cloud how I view the success of my President unless I think it might impact his chances of reelection. Rachel has done the opposite: she has let her issue become a club to be used against PBO because she has not gotten everything she wanted and gotten it instantly. Using it to hurt PBO instead of acknowledging his immense success. If PBO had gotten himself enbroiled in NYs marriage equality vote it actually would have hurt the bill’s chances of passage. There is no excuse for someone of Rachel’s intelligence to act this recklessly.

When I hear Obama has far more offices open in Florida, I’m happy but I’m also thinking that is not a solid advantage. The other side, with their unlimited funds, can stand an army quickly, too. Let’s hope there is more to it.

      • April 21, 2012 at 10:38 am

It’s not possible, because rove will only use his funds on ads, the RNC has 32 million COH and are 10 million in debt.
That is how they are starting to build their so called ground game!

Secretary Chu and Lisa Jackson has been doing great work, under the radar!
AARPA-E is also doing great work… One such accomplishment, cheap carbon capture coal plant in San Antonio! First ever carbon capture plant being built with a grant from the DOE!
You think, if Chris really cared, he would mention this, that we are now able to store wind and solar energy, because of Stephen Chu.
And Lisa Jackson fines big Companies, every day, for clean air act and clean water act violations, and makes them clean it up.

Exactly. He had on Christine Todd Whitman EPA Admin. under GWB and former horrible GOP Gov. of NJ who was praising Reagan – the ultimate climate change denier – as an environmental savior and bashing Al Gore. Then you had a republican meteorologist who believes climate change is real but still votes GOP climate change deniers into office. The level of cognitive dissonance was hilarious.

Goooooood Morning..Chipsss and the TOD fam….

In the early days of the President’s administration we were on the brink of another great depression…how close we were…we will never truly understand…just thinking about that…scares me to no end….

the President was up against the Party of NO and their allies….who used racism….and fear to keep us all divided….

if not for the tenacity of the President and his democratic allies….the ship would have been lost…

now we sit back and see what was accomplished….those on the left are upset because the President could not be a miracle worker and get all that they wanted…yet they overlook what he has been able to accomplish…i often wonder who side they are on…

then there is the other side…the folks who want to bleed our country dry for their own purposes and do not care who suffers because of it…

one thing that i have learned that when you have a disfunctional gov as we have now…that it takes creativity on the part of the President to get anything done and in addition his call on use to contact our elected representatives…

i ask my neighbors and friend…to think about where we woould be if the Repubs had not obstructed the President…

heading out today to my Weight Watchers class…then the Obama 2012 election headquarters to do phone banking….

i agree with the Vice-President that it will take a phenominal ground game to defeat all the money from the other side…

i send out emails …tweet….do the fb thing….talk to my neighbors…direct them to this blog…whitehouse.gov….c-span …etc….to give them alternatives to the MSM….

this is my small contribution…but if i become like that pebble thrown in the lake….my small efforts will have a bigger effect….

    Pressssssssssssssss ON!…

Priorities USA: Romney has something to hide on taxes

// The fact that Mitt Romney has declined to release more than one year of tax returns amounts to proof that he’s hiding something politically damaging, the pro-Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action argues in a memo set for release this weekend.

Authored by former White House spokesman and Priorities USA strategist Bill Burton, the document aims to keep the pressure on Romney over his decision to make public only his 2010 and as-yet-uncompleted 2011 returns to the public. Burton outlines why the tax issue is a lose-lose for Romney, arguing that the Republican “could decide to face months of bipartisan criticism for a failure to release his tax returns or he could confirm damaging information including further tax avoidance, new offshore accounts, and an even lower tax rate in previous years.”

“If there were nothing damaging in his tax returns, Romney would have already released them,” Burton writes in the memo shared with POLITICO. “Instead, Romney appears to have decided that the information in his returns is so problematic that he will endure criticism from the right and left for his refusal to follow a well-established standard of transparency for Presidential candidates.” //

The president’s reelection campaign spent $15.6 million last month, and his joint committee spent $22 million.

Unless they can find ways to begin convincing the nation’s fastest growing population — Hispanics accounted for half of all the growth of the U.S. population over the last decade — that the GOP is a potential political home for them, they won’t remain a credible national party in 2016, 2020 and beyond.

The Senate Appropriations Committee allocated nearly the same amount for the 2013 Pentagon budget that President Obama has requested, but there’s one caveat: the panel put nearly $5 billion more in the war budget.

The committee said Thursday its Defense Department spending will include $93.3 billion in overseas contingency operations (OCO), which funds the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, an increase of $4.9 billion from the Pentagon’s $88.4 billion request.

With the shift, the committee’s overall $604 billion allocation for the base Pentagon budget and OCO is essentially in line with the Pentagon’s budget request.

TEMPE, Ariz. — A former president of the University of Arizona pleaded with Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Friday to support some version of the Dream Act to give “a glimmer of hope” to college students who are not in the United States legally.

“They’re bright, they can help carry this country forward,” Manuel Pacheco told Romney during a roundtable discussion with Latino business leaders in Tempe. “I think it would be a shame to lose that particular talent that they bring.”

Romney listened politely, nodding, as Pacheco pushed him to effectively change his strong opposition to the Dream Act, which would provide a path to citizenship for undocumented college students.

When Pacheco was done speaking, Romney said: “Thank you! Appreciate that! Thank you.” He then turned to the next participant and did not discuss the matter further.

    http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2012/04/20/468659/states-in-northeast-cap-and-trade-program-reduce-co2-faster-grow-gdp-other-states/

The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) is a nine-state cap-and-trade market designed to reduce emissions in the utility sector 10% by 2018. A recent independent analysis showed that the program has already created $1.6 billion in economic value and set the stage for $1.1 billion in ratepayer savings through investments in efficiency and renewable energy.
This latest report shows that states under the RGGI program saw a 20% greater reduction in per-capita carbon emissions than non-RGGI states — all while growing per-capita GDP at double the rate of the rest of the country.

    snip/

The Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity actually claimed that RGGI would drive rates up in New Jersey by 90%. And New Jersey Governor Chris Christie pulled his state out of the program, calling it a “gimmicky tax.” According to program administrators, proceeds from carbon credit auctions brought $29 million to New Jersey in 2010, leveraging $3 to $4 in benefits for every dollar invested.
Opponents who claim cap and trade is bad for the economy simply don’t have a leg to stand on.

The Huffington Post’s Peter Goodman notes that the study “brings home the fact that many people now behind on their mortgages got there not because of stupidity or gluttony, but because of the high cost of satisfying a societal imperative: They wanted to put their children in good schools.”

Are there any Catholics from Chicago here? Cardinal Francis George has been turning the Catholic Church into an arm of the GOP and his racism is apparent in this effort. Why should Obama supporters keep giving their money every Sunday to this creep, and to the institution that is opposing everything our President is trying to do, and accusing him of being anti-religion and anti-God?? The Roman Catholic Church simply uses the money they get to fight our President and the cause of social justice in this country. At least in Seattle the parishes there are now refusing to participate in the anti-gay marriage campaign the Catholic Church is spending millions of their money to perpetrate on citizens of the state of Washington. Excuse me, Catholics of Chicago, do you have a conscience? St. Thomas Aquinas said that individual conscience is primary and should be followed over any institutional imperative. There are many AA parishes in Chicago. How do they feel about a racist Archbishop denigrating and promoting hate of President Obama??

I’m still trying to understand how Africans of any stripe could belong to catholicism. The Catholic church was a big proponent of the slave trade, and as it stands today, is still pretty much racist. No black pope yet? Just my 2 cents. Not meant to offend, just awaken.

Well, the fact is they do. And the previous Cardinal of Chicago was very strong on social justice and considered a liberal in the Church. All those bishops and cardinals have died or been purged. There are very progressive AA parishes in Chicago, but they have to stand up now and call out Cardinal George on his racism and alignment with the teabagger GOP against our President and against the cause of social justice.

I am an active and devout daily mass rosary praying Catholic…

And yes Left-indie, Cardinal George is virulently racist as are so many in the hierarchy of the Catholic church…

You Left-Indie seem terribly dismissive of racism and it would appear that you would have us believe that the varying degrees to which those in different denominations are racist somehow absolves them and even trivializes the concerns of those who call attention to its existence in places of worship and those who run them…

Actually, you Left-Indie seem terribly invested in neutralizing any focus on glaring issues that highlight the general and specific instances of historic mistreatment and disrespect of and racist attacks on President Obama no matter how subtly packaged…

Actually, you seem very heavily invested in dampening spirits and enthusiasm generally around here…

Not buying the devils advocate contention…

So begs the quesion…What’s your game really…?

I take racism charge seriously, Chi. I ran diversity training in earlier life. I take that charge seriously. Politacal disagreements and racism ain’t the same. Every attack on the president ain’t about racism. To paint all that way is a big mistake for a supporter of the president. As for dampening spirits, up and down polls dampen spirits more than anything and you will never catch me talking about one. And you will never catch me talk down an Obama policy. Not a one. You may catch me, however, react to frivolous charges of racism. Throwing it around so much robs it of it’s weight.

Taking a break from gardening. As I said, not to offend, but the whole Christian church is guilty. And even as I stand a Christian myself, there are the facts of the powers that be. Just as in the established churches of every denomination, Sunday remains the most segregated day of the week. I personally do not see any origins of African culture in the Catholic church. Only lately has it begun to embrace a more diverse culture, wherein your old-time Baptist and Episcopal churches were embraced by AA’s since slavery, and this was out of shear necessity. Hey we are all free to worship however, but I gave my OPINION. No offense meant.

I wonder how Mitt and Ann dancing horse is doing in the contest overseas. Do you guys think the Romneys have a elevator for their horses? Mitt Romney is a arrogant punk ass, he talks of how he is not going to apologize for his success, but a humble man, a man who truly care about people, would say I won’t apologize for being successful, but I will thank God for all his blessings. But not that arrogant punk ass.

So I don’t watch Alex the Twit, but just happened to come across it, changing channels, and her little AA commenter and she were a bit too giddy about the fact that Romney (I haven’t found a name for the creature yet) will have eventually out-raised PBO in funds. That our super pacs were not being funded as well. I am so hoping that this election will be able to prove that it is not money but positive messaging and boots on the ground that wins in the end.

I didn’t even see it when he discussed the “orange juice scandal” with Shuster. So Tweety actually talked about it twice because I saw him discuss it with Fineman. Looks like they were going to try to make it a meme and it flopped.

And this is exactly why you will never ever read of me giving kudos of any kind to that jackass. I cannot stand Matthews. He is a piece of pure d shit. From then to now. I drink orange juice any time of day. I guess he adheres to his “breakfast of champions” idea with the bowl of cereal, a glass of milk and a little glass of orange juice. You know, real Amerikan-like ? As a matter of fact, I just had some OJ and after my gardening efforts, I could use some more. Mickey fickey the whole lot of ‘em !

I drink OJ all day as well. It’s refreshing and very filling. It also has no fat grams (calories can quickly add up though). Still, I love drinking it and had no idea it was a no-no

          April 21, 2012 at 1:08 pm

Howard Fineman and Chris Matthews said that Sen. Obama would surely lose the Iowa primary because at a diner, he was offered coffee and asked for orange juice instead. Apparently, this was supposed to doom him because real Iowans never ever drink orange juice in the morning. According to Fineman and Matthews, drinking orange juice in the morning is some weird thing only Chicago college professors do and the people in that Iowa diner simply could never imagine drinking orange juice with their breakfast instead of coffee.

Good afternoon all. Today and tomorrow the White House is hosting the Spring Garden tours. It’s a really nice event. I was volunteering this morning passing out tickets on the National Mall. People are so graceful to have the opportunity to get on the White House grounds. These folks recognize that PBO and the First Family have been extremely adamant in making sure the PEOPLE take advantage of the People’s house.

If you’re in or around DC make sure to check it out. Tickets are free.

Also, I noticed whenever I get out amongst the people (and away from my computer and twitter), it kind of takes my mind off the election. It’s a stress reliever lol.
So please don’t get down about the ups and downs of the campaign. Take a deep breath…

sidenote: Last night I had a dream that PBO was my professor (????) and the only class I was taking was taught by him. Weird as hell.

Like everything else, the donations received by political candidates are open to many different interpretations. However, one small detail is never mentioned: a corporation that gives a donation is often just engaging in the game of influence peddling; a working mom or a cash-strapped senior citizen or struggling small business owner who makes a pledge to donate $ 10.00 a month or chip in $ 25.00 as a one-time donation will in all probability vote for the President. And every one of these small donors has a family and/or circle of friends who are also likely to favor the President’s agenda and vote for him. A majority of those $ 3.00 donors are most likely volunteers who not only contribute whatever they can afford but also constitute the heart of a rapidly growing grassroots organization. All in all, I simply don’t see anything negative for the President in this fundraising report.

I see that some here are quite incredulous about President Obama’s “Orange juice Scandal” in 2008!

But to me the MSM promoting the “scandal” on orange juice was just as surprising to me as when they went after PBO for asking for either mustard or ketchup to add to his burger/hotdog!!

I could not believe the time that was spent on this and how reporters breathlessly predicted that it is going to cause him to loose votes in the Midwest.

Food for thought. Why isn’t KKKarl Rove sharing a jail cell with Cheney again?

    http://truth-out.org/news/item/8646-on-the-news-with-thom-hartmann-karl-roves-superpac-under-scrutiny

You need to know this. A secret cadre of rich people, corporations, and possibly even foreign powers are buying our elections – and we don’t even know who they are. Karl Rove’s Crossroads SuperPACs have raised $123 million since 2010 to use against President Obama and Democrats nationwide. That’s more money than the John McCain campaign spent in the entire 2008 presidential election. But, as the Center for Public Integrity points put – 62% of that money – or $76 million – comes from fewer than 100 completely secret donors. That means a handful of very wealthy and powerful forces are spending big bucks to run ads to build up or destroy American politicians and we’ll never know what sort of string are attached. That money could be coming from oil barons at BP – banksters at Goldman Sachs – or war profiteers at Lockheed Martin. Or – it could be coming from foreign dictators like Mahmoud Ahmadenijad. After all – Republicans have always been good to the Iranians. Reagan sold them weapons in the 1980’s – Dick Cheney sold them material that could be used to build nuclear weapons in the 1990’s – and George W. Bush took out Iran’s biggest enemy – Saddam Hussein – in 2006. So the question – is Karl Rove using Ahmadenijad’s money to destroy Democratic politicians? Or is it just money from American oil and Wall Street oligarchs?

I am not a typical advocate for the hackers but this is one area where revealing WHO these secret donors are could help the nation.

BILL MOYERS: ” CAMPAIGN AD WATCH”

    Let’s clear the air.

    ———————————————–

The Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision opened floodgates to unlimited corporate spending on elections, much of which is spent on often misleading and manipulative attack ads. But identifying false claims, unveiling who funds and approves them, and preventing such media manipulation from moving beyond commercial media into public television is imperative to preserving our democracy. The FCC, some local TV stations, and organizations like The Sunlight Foundation, ProPublica, Free Press, FactCheck.org, and the New America Foundation are leading the way. And we’re jumping in, too. This page aims to help by providing you with information, empowerment tools and links to help you make a difference in the cause of campaign integrity and transparency. We’ll keep adding materials and suggesting helpful sites and sources as we come across them. You can help by suggesting your own ideas and possible partners. Let’s clear the air.

    PAC Track

What and Where are the Super PACs Spending?

By Al Shaw and Kim Barker, ProPublica. Updated April 21, 2012, 12:00 a.m. EST

Two federal court rulings in 2010 paved the way for the ascent of “super PACs,” political action committees that can raise and spend unlimited amounts of money on political races, as long as they don’t coordinate with a specific candidate. And so far, they’re spending heavily on the Republican race. This app, part of our long-term investigation into “dark money,” keeps track of where super PACs are spending and raising their cash to influence the presidential race.

It Takes Dark Money to Make Dark Money

Karl Rove’s dark-money group doles out $2.75 million to an outfit fighting to keep dark money in the dark.

    ——————————

When Crossroads GPS, the conservative nonprofit started by GOP political gurus Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie, isn’t dropping millions of dollars on anti-Obama ads, it’s doling out tens of millions more to like-minded groups. “The ATM of the Right,” Politico recently called Crossroads. Between May 2010 and December 2011, new tax records show, Crossroads gave $4 million to Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform and $500,000 to former Sen. Norm Coleman’s American Action Network, among others.

But there was another recipient of Crossroads cash that stood out: the Center for Individual Freedom, which snagged $2.75 million. Among political money experts, CFIF is known for its aggressive legal strategy aimed at toppling disclosure laws at the state level. In other words, Crossroads GPS, which doesn’t name its donors, gave millions to another dark-money group whose goals include fighting to keep dark money in the dark.
