Charles Pierce: Has The New York Times taken to hiring its “Public Editors” from the people waiting on hold for Mark Levin?

Readers deserve to know: Who is the real Barack Obama?

No kidding, that appeared in an actual column in the actual New York Times.

…. Barack Obama has been on the national scene for eight years. He was a candidate for the better part of two years and has been the president of the United States for the better part of three. We know about things his preacher said. We know about his uncle’s unfortunate driving history and his aunt’s time on the dole. A good portion of the Republican base — the portion that Mr. Brisbane here is begging not to write him anything hurtful anymore — believes that it knows the president is a Kenyan-born Muslim Indonesian socialist who is just waiting until his second term to round them all up, take away their guns, and give them all retroactive late-term abortions, and only Brisbanish “vetting” can stand in the way of all that.

We are so very screwed.

ThinkProgress: Former State Treasurer Sarah Steelman, a Republican now hoping to unseat Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), said recently that she was unfamiliar with the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), the landmark anti-domestic violence legislation whose re-authorization is now stalled in the Senate.

Senate Republicans are objecting to re-upping the 1994 law, which has already been extended several times, because of amendments that would extend protections for Native American women, gay victims, and others.

A video released today by the Missouri Democratic Party shows a man asking Steelman about VAWA at a campaign event. Steelman replies, “I’m not sure what that is because I’m not serving right now.” He asks again, “you haven’t really heard about it?” And she confirms, “no, not really.”

Caitlin Legacki, a spokeswoman for the Missouri Democratic Party, told Inside Missouri Politics that the exchange “underscores how ill-equipped she is to serve in public office.”

One puzzler—–I saw Colbert tweeted that he just loved the UNC campus—–so he’s there too? Wondering if he is going to intersect with PBO too.

Good morning Tod! I love the way the president looks at FLOTUS. He gives her his complete attention. In his eyes are admiration and respect. I don’t think I have ever seen a president and first lady so in tune, and so in love. It comforts my heart to know he has this place of peace and love he can go to get recharged. Because the level of hate and negativity directed toward him by many could wear a person down after time. So, I raise my glass (coffee cup) to my president and his wife and I am thankful they have each other. It is going to be a great day!

I am off to proudly cast my vote for Barack Obama for president in our state primary, but I wanted to share something special with you that shows how much the arc of history bends toward justice, even if the bending gets a little obscure sometimes. Fifty years ago (yes, that long) my best pal in high school was awarded a full scholarship to a prestigious college in PA. When she got there she realized she was admitted as a token AA female and became depressed over the subtle discrimination and condescension. Much to her mother’s dismay and fear, she left the school and the scholarship after one year and joined the civil rights movement in the south working with James Farmer in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), participating in marches and sit-ins, getting arrested and jailed. Scary and wonderful times, according to her. Years later, she became a distinguished lecturer on the civil right movement and its impact, an award-winning film documentarian, and an author. Along the way she’s raised awareness about the civil rights movement and inspired thousands of young people to keep up the fight. Needless to say, I’m very proud of her and awed by her accomplishments. Next month, the college she left so unhappily fifty years ago is awarding her an honorary doctorate for outstanding lifetime achievement in civil rights. Her reaction, “I wish Mama was alive to see this.” I couldn’t be happier for this perfect close to the long ago slights that led to such an outstanding career. And I know in my heart that somewhere in heaven “mama” will be the first one cheering when her little girl gets the reward she so richly earned. That, truly, is the arc bending low and finding justice. Have a great day.

Why the Latino Vote Isn’t Really Up For Grabs

//…But is the Latino vote really up for grabs, in a way that could swing the election? The polling data suggests that’s a stretch.

Polling shows that 2012 is shaping up to look a lot like 2008 among Latino voters: Two thirds nationally say they will vote for President Obama, a quarter say they’re in the GOP camp, with the little remaining undecided, as shown by a Univision poll from January and a Pew survey from a week ago….//

…“When Obama first sued Arizona, it was widely panned as ‘unpopular,’” says Frank Sharry, founder and executive director of America’s Voice, a pro-reform organization. “I’d say with the timing now, it’s great politics. … It’s him standing up for Latinos against laws that essentially legalize harassment and discrimination.”

    This from First Read:

*** So you’re saying there’s a chance: In an interview on FOX last night, House Speaker John Boehner said that Republicans have a one-in-three chance of not holding the House, NBC’s Luke Russert and Frank Thorp report. “I would say that there is a two-in-three chance that we win control of the House again, but there’s a one-in-three chance that we could lose,” Boehner said in the FOX interview. “We’ve got a big challenge, and we’ve got work to do.”

As Trumpdog pointed out in last night’s post, Boehner has no concern about JOBS UNTIL his is potentially on the line, THEN he’s got work to do. This is something we should focus some attention on over and over in the days ahead IMO.

Republican Senator John Cornyn Accuses Democrats Of Playing Political Games With Violence Against Women Act

    ————–

Republicans don’t like the fact that Democrats have them pegged as waging a war against women. So it’s baffling that Republicans haven’t unanimously extended the Violence Against Women Act. But Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn is accusing Democrats of playing political games with the Act.
    .
    .
But Republicans won’t do that. They won’t do it because they’re the ones playing politics with people’s lives. Republicans object to this bill because they think people should be able to use violence against others. Across the country, Republicans have sought to eliminate a woman’s right to choose. They have fought to destroy women’s access to contraception. They have repealed equal pay laws. And they have even tried to repeal domestic violence laws. If Republicans really don’t hate women, how come they continually act like pricks toward them?

On Fox, Christopher Hahn Exposes Republican Senators’ Constant Obstructionism

Appearing on Fox News today, Fox News contributor Christopher Hahn called out conservative talking points by pointing out that Senate Republicans constantly resort to filibusters to block bills that have the support of a majority of senators.

As we’ve pointed out, the conservative media have been hiding Republican obstructionism in order to label Democratic senators as “lazy” and “do-nothing.” But Republicans have repeatedly resorted to filibusters to block legislation — such as bills to ensure that the richest Americans pay their fair share in taxes — that would otherwise have passed the Senate. Republicans are on a pace to filibuster more often than Democrats did when they were in the minority.

His flip-flopping is such low character for someone who wants to make decisions that impact the whole world. Charles Pierce made an excellent point on Stephanie Miller this morning saying that Romney’s flip-flopping and lying shouldn’t just be taken as a given because it’s a successful tactic; it should be thoroughly scrutinized and roundly criticized, because the Office of the President deserves more integrity than that.

  38. April 24, 2012 at 10:57 am

Morning everyone, here’s a short story for you while I bid goodnight from Sydney.

My husband was telling me of a conversation he had yesterday with a former colleague at CISCO. This company is run by many Repubs at Exec level. The conversation was about leadership.

It was a casual discussion where hubby mentioned PBO as an example of a leader, his definition being, a leader has the ability to motivate and lead a great number of people to do things based on a shared cause. The colleague, a Texan visiting Sydney office, was surprised to hear Obama’s name mentioned as a leader, and scoffed using the example that prior to GFC in 2008, DOW was much higher than it is now and the American economy is nowhere near what it was prior to GFC. (How quickly they forget, or want to forget….anyhow)

My husband asked him to look at what happened from the GFC fallout and how far THE largest economy in the world plummeted in that first and subsequent year, focusing on the lowest point… THEN, look at where the country is today. He told him to look at how Obama was able to stop the freefall and steady while building again the largest economy in the world so it was trekking back up again. He told him, he was ridiculous to think PBO was expected in just 3 years to turn around THE largest economy in the world that had virtually collapsed. The Texan didn’t say anything more and I’m not sure if it will make a difference to how he votes. But it was nice to hear my husband share this with me. As PBO said, one voice can make a difference….

Enjoy the rest of your day TODers…cheers until next time…

    • 114 Pamela
      April 24, 2012 at 11:14 am

Thank you, Berny, you and your husband are a great example of how voices from outside the American view can help PBO, maybe giving a broader perspective on how the world sees our President! Enjoy your ANZAC Day. I’ve heard of a very nic little pub over in The Rocks, which makes it’s own designer beers, and is a wonderful place to meet folks! It’s called Hart’s, check it out!

This is excellent! The fact that an American can travel across the world and feel comfortable bad-mouthing his President, and then have to be put straight by people literally on the other side of the planet – what an embarrassment to Americans. While Romney continues to tell the lie that President Obama has apologized for Americans, the Republicans continue to show the world that maybe America actually does need to apologize – not just to the world, but to the President, Leader of the Free World.

I love this. This is the one area where I’ll give the Occupy movement some credit. I think the Occupy movement did actually create an awareness in people that there is power in their numbers; that when people unite behind a common cause, they can move mountains. I think people got complacent, worrying about their own issues and not realizing that we were all in the same boat. I don’t think the Occupy movement has actually accomplished anything in and of itself, but they lit the spark that caused people like that young woman to call for a boycott of big banks and to move their money to community banks and credit unions. They did encourage people to put out a call to get Limbaugh de-sponsored. They raised their voices and forced ALEC sponsors to go running. They’ve inspired people to applaud the President’s recess appointment to the CFBA. And countless other small causes that were inspired by those early actions from the Occupy movement. I give most of the credit to President Obama calling for people to care for each other (even before his inauguration), and to be empowered, but Occupy got people to pay attention again – and to believe that their voices were powerful. The Occupy people are their own worst enemies and they’ve wasted a lot of energy on nonsense, but their very existence has inspired people – and exposed the one percenters to be the heartless, soulless, greedy buggers that they are.

DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.) said Tuesday that it was “entirely reasonable” for Speaker John Boehner to express doubts about the GOP’s ability to hold the House in November’s elections.

Wasserman Schultz said that though she’s “not an oddsmaker,” she agreed with Boehner that Democrats could fare well in the November elections.

“I think it is entirely reasonable for the Speaker to expect they could lose the House, because they very well could,” the DNC chairwoman told CNN.

We’ve got work to do, people. The idea of not having to see or hear Boehner again after November is the biggest incentive in the world to work our hearts out for our candidates. We cannot give our newly re-elected President Obama a Republican House to work with. We..just..can’t. In the immortal words of our first lady, Let’s Move.

Barbara Walters is fawning over Miss Ann on The View. Repeatedly said she is “very effective”. I wonder how she can think that someone who says that she “LOVES that there are women out there who don’t have a choice and have to work” is “very effective”.

Walters makes me sick…….she is such a phoney baloney…..she is very close friends with Roger Ailes.

Barbara Walters is so overdue for retirement, it’s pathetic. She was insufferable when she began her career, has been insufferable throughout her career and has now passed that point into unendurable. I could not care less what she does or says.

I’m with you, Jackie. I hope she never darkens the White House doorstep again, and I’ve vowed not to watch that show of hers ever again. Too much stupid.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) announced on Tuesday morning that every time Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) criticizes President Obama on the Senate floor, she will take to the floor to defend Obama.

Boxer spoke shortly after McConnell again blasted Obama for failing to take steps to help the economy recover, and for focusing on government-based solutions that he said have failed. McConnell, who frequently uses his morning remarks to criticize Obama, said Tuesday morning that Obama has become just another politician who has failed to deliver results for Americans.

Yeah for Barbara Boxer! She’s one of my favorite senators. Let the turtle know we’re not going to take his poison and keep quiet. Maybe be worth watching if she’s going to challenge him.

I love Boxer, almost as much as I love FLOTUS and Jill Biden. And that is a lot of love.

Finally – they should have been doing this from the beginning! It shouldn’t need an announcement. Good grief!

Good morning Yardarm. This place is a different place when you are on leave. Good to see you back on duty. And an early Happy Birthday. I am sure Chips will have some special present all wrapped up for you tomorrow.

I was like a kid in the candy shop when I voted this morning. The usual line of hyper Republicans that shove handouts in your face was there once again, but I just sailed on by with a huge smile on my face. Why? I was voting for Barack Obama today and I felt great. I even did a little happy dance in place when I saw his name at the top of the ballot. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I get to do this again!!! So I’m just clicking away at all the other Democrats with a big sappy smile and afterwards I threw up my hands and said a very quiet, YES. Then I waved to the clerks, the judge and all the helpers and told them to have a good day. Back on the sidewalk I told my husband in a loud voice in front of the Republican lineup that I LOVED voting for my president. What a blast! Oh, and by the way, though this was supposed to be the big Voter ID test, nobody asked either of us to show ours. Very odd.
